Based in San Juan, Alliance Française of Puerto Rico is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides French-language classes for all age groups, offers testing for internationally recognized certification, and provides study opportunities in France. As the island’s foremost center for French language and culture, AFPR hosts a variety of events that foster crosscultural exchange and education.

Kicking off with Opening Night, the Festival presents 7 days of European and international co-production film screenings, alongside panel discussions, filmmaker Q&As, and cultural events. The week comes to a grand finale with the announcement of the 2025 Cortadito winners during our Closing Night celebration.

This unique educational initiative features a selection of subtitled French films for children and teens curated in collaboration with the Institut Français and the Alliance Française’s National U.S. Coordinator. Over 1,000 students from public and private schools across the island are invited to attend at no charge. Their experience is enhanced by educational guides created in collaboration with the Alliance Française of Paris.

PREFF brings the best of European cinema to Puerto Rico, with exclusive big-screen premieres, guest artists, and a carefully curated lineup developed in collaboration with participating embassies, consulates, and cultural institutions.

On the first Friday of each month at the Alliance Française of Puerto Rico, PREFF hosts free screenings of French and Francophone films with Spanish subtitles. The Festival also collaborates with European and local institutions to organize special events featuring acclaimed European films and Puerto Rican productions.
PREFF’s short film competition continues to grow and forge new creative links between Puerto Rico, Europe, and North America—while supporting the production and visibility of captivating, original work.
• Cortadito Film Lab: From March through October, this incubator provides training and one-on-one mentorship for six selected short film projects.
• 2025 Competition: A jury of local and international talents and experts will award the best short films participating in Cortadito.
• Distribution Support: A new Cortadito Retrospective has launched in 2025, beginning with a special screening at the Miami Film Festival.

PREFF’s professional platform fosters dialogue and collaboration between the audiovisual and creative industries in Europe, Puerto Rico, and the Americas.
• Launched in 2022, the Industry Forum supports co-productions and creative exchange.

PREFF’s Cine Gira takes European and Puerto Rican cinema to local and diaspora communities with limited access to year-round high-quality cultural programming or contemporary Puerto Rican cinema, offering free screenings and in-person conversations with filmmakers.
• This traveling program extends the Festival beyond its main week, reaching audiences across Puerto Rico’s archipelago and even in the continental United States.

For over 12 years, PREFF’s landmark educational program has brought French-language films to thousands of children and students across Puerto Rico.
• A special partnership with Alliance Française’s National U.S. Coordinator and the Institut Français
• Free screenings of French-language films from the Institut Français with subtitles in Spanish, for audiences ages 4 to 18
• Enriched by educational materials prepared by the Alliance Française of Paris and guided discussions, integrating cinema as a learning tool
• A one-of-a-kind cultural and educational experience in Puerto Rico, with morning screenings during school hours
• Special school visits in rural and non-metropolitan areas through the Festinema Cine Gira program
Evening screenings featuring Festinema titles and other European films, curated for children and their families to enjoy together.
PREFF extends far beyond its core Festival week with year-round programming that uses cinema as a tool for learning, critical engagement, and cultural exchange.
• Cine Pasaje: University-oriented European film series that encourage critical thinking, interdisciplinary discussion, and dialogue on topics such as history, ethics, and contemporary society
• ConVerCine: Guided screenings and discussions led by the Festival team, using film as a catalyst to spark deeper conversations
• Film Courses: Specialized workshops exploring cinematic movements, visual styles, and the work of independent filmmakers
• Other Activities: Monthly Cinema Nights, a weekly blog featuring film news and reviews, and other special initiatives
Outside the screening rooms, the Festival offers exclusive events and convivial receptions to be enjoyed by Festival participants.
Each year, PREFF’s film screenings are elevated by a calendar of special events and receptions. These memorable occasions bring together sponsors, collaborators, institutional representatives, audiences, and film professionals—and feature a lineup of special guests.
