KMCC parking lot reopens Story and photo by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Civil Engineer Squadron prepared the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center’s southwest parking lot for final acceptance Sept. 11. During the final acceptance, 86th CES, 86th Contracting Squadron, and the contractor went over the completed work to ensure the quality before signing the final paperwork and reopening the parking lot. “The final acceptance on Monday went great,” said Werner Fess, 86th CES project manager. “The parking lot was opened to drivers immediately afterward.” Construction started on the structure to repair damages due to years of varying weather conditions that eventually created deformations in the parking lot. While the repairs were being made, the 86th CES decided to take the opportunity to increase the width of the parking spaces in the lot. “In the past we’ve had a few complaints about the width of the parking spaces in this parking lot,” said Fess. “We took this time to increase the width of parking spaces from 2.40

86th MDSS keeps an eye on Ramstein medicine Story and photos by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When an Airman or dependent goes to the doctor, picks up a prescription at the pharmacy, or attends a self-aid buddy care course, they may not think about where the medication, supplies, and equipment come from to make all those things possible. The 86th Medical Support Squadron provides peacetime and wartime support of medical supplies and equipment on Ramstein and in deployed locations such as Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. “Medical supply can be looked at in many ways, like general medical care such as gauze and gloves, to training,” said Staff Sgt. Justin Ward, 86th MDSS noncommissioned officer in charge of medical material service. “For exam-

ple, security forces, SABC monitors, everyone else who need to train on medical items such as tourniquets; they go through us because we are the mandatory source when it comes to approval. We support both the medical group and anyone else across the base that needs medical items.” The 86th MDSS is not limited to providing support for entities with the 86th Medical Group. Any organization that uses any type of medical equipment or supplies is serviced by the squadron. “We have a hundred customer accounts we maintain, whether it be the pharmacy, flight medicine, physical therapy, security forces, the contingency response group, the Federal Bureau of Investigations when they do missions out here, the POW missions,” Ward said. “Anyone you can think of

that has to come through Ramstein for medical support, we support them.” One aspect of the squadron’s mission is to repair and calibrate all medical equipment used by aeromedical evacuation Airmen to support their patients. If anything is broken on the equipment, the Airmen service them, mark it down in their tracking system, and scan it into ready status stating it is good to go to ship out to the next people. “All the stuff that comes in, like one with a broken screen, you can’t really service the patients,” said Senior Airman Dustin Johnson, 86th MDSS biomedical maintenance technician. “The medical technicians are only as good as the equipment they use, and without the equipment, they really can’t help anyone. I believe what we do here has a giant impact on the mission. I love my job.”

Airman 1st Class Ryan Thomas, 86th Medical Support Squadron biomedical equipment technician, holds the hose of an oxygen generator and liquefier to allow air to be pushed out so liquid oxygen is pumped into a next-generation portable therapeutic liquid oxygen system Sept. 17 on Ramstein. The NTPLOX is used by aeromedical evacuation Airmen to deliver gaseous oxygen to their patients at a regulated level.

Airman 1st Class Mary Joe, 86th Medical Support Squadron medical logistician, takes inventory of medication stored in one of three warehouses Sept. 7 on Ramstein. The 86th MDSS war reserve material service over $30 million worth of supplies and equipment that goes to deployed locations.

Staff Sgt. Jason Bishop, 86th Medical Support Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of clinical maintenance, checks the settings for a nitrogen generator Sept. 7 on Ramstein. The 86th MDSS recently purchased the generator to replace using tanks that required refilling and two Airmen to safely operate, saving the Air Force man hours and approximately $7,000 a month.

The squadron also houses all the medical supplies needed to support the medical group and any other organization on Ramstein or a deployed location may require in their war reserve material unit. They are responsible for maintaining and shipping over $30 million worth of equipment and supplies. “We house medical supplies and equipment that save people’s lives,” said Airman 1st Class Breanna Jannarone, 86th MDSS medical logistician. “I’m not operating on you directly with my own two hands, but I’m providing the supplies so it can be put in doctor’s hands. I’m the one making sure if this goes out, it’s a hundred percent correct. I’m accountable for it, that’s my package. I make sure everything you need to survive is in there.” The war reserve material unit not only supports Ramstein and deployed locations; they work with U.S. NATO partners to share best practices. In 2016, three 86th MDSS Airmen went on a temporary duty to Slovakia to work and train with their medical service members. “We had some of our own go on a temporary duty to help set up tents, the computer program we use, and show how to do the logistics side of everything we do here but on a much smaller scale,” Jannarone said. “They trained our NATO partners to show them what we do and how they can also have similar programs and ways to manage their items.” Innovation is the key to the Air Force, and the 86th MDSS also strives to find better ways to complete their mission. To better support their aeromedical evacuation customers, the squadron purchased a nitrogen generator and oxygen generator and liquefier to streamline a process frequently required by the customer and make it all occur in house. The new system cut the time down from three weeks to two to three days and saves the Air Force approximately $7,000 a month. Whether it’s repairing equipment, storing and shipping supplies, or refilling equipment the 86th MDSS Airmen do their best to provide life-saving products to those who need them. “It’s a rewarding job, because I know I’m able to support the big picture,” Ward said. “Some see it as you’re only doing one thing, but I see it as I’m supporting someone in the long run.” Saving a life can be anything from having a tourniquet on hand when a fellow Airman is injured in an austere location to providing a prescription to an Airman or dependent who needs it. Neither of these or anything in between could be done without the aid of the 86th MDSS Airmen.

CHALLENGE, from Page 1

ing in, and you’re creating the teams yourself. It’s a healthy competition and that builds alliances and camaraderie.” Devitt added that events such as the Commander’s Challenge give 86th AW Airmen a chance to relax and take a break from the hectic work schedule many people face in the Air Force’s European theater. “Not only is it good for spending time outside of work, but you might see a different side to your co-worker,” she said. “This is the largest wing in the Air Force. It’s an overseas base, the operations tempo is very high and people are very busy. They’re taking time out of work to get to know one another as people, and that’s important.”

The Commander’s Challenge touches on the physical and social pillars of the Air Force’s Comprehensive Airman Fitness model, and aims to promote morale through physical activity and interactions with fellow Airmen. Brig. Gen. Richard G. Moore Jr., 86th Airlift Wing commander, handed out awards to the winning teams at the end of the event. Moore encouraged Airmen to take care of each other, citing the sacrifices and hardships that come with military life. “I assert that this isn’t something we do enough of,” Moore said. “The purpose of this is to spend time with each other and to realize how much we have in common. We understand the lifestyle we’ve chosen and the sacrifice that goes along with our service.

Airmen assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing play soccer during the annual Commander’s Challenge resilience day, Sept. 6. The event promoted camaraderie and team building through physical activity and social interaction.

“At the end of the day, one can argue that we’re all we’ve got,” he continued. “We have to take care of each other, because if we don’t take care of each other, nobody else will.” Tech. Sgt. Jeffrey Luca, 86th Communications Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of the radio frequency transmission shop, expressed his happiness at being able to participate in the wing’s annual sports day. Luca’s 86th CS won in the 400 meter swim relay and three-legged race. He described resilience events, such as the Commander’s Challenge, as days where all Airmen can feel a common bond despite their duty component or rank. Luca, along with several other communications Airmen, are Air National Guardsmen

who are on an active duty tour at Ramstein. “It feels fantastic to win on the active duty side,” said Luca, who is based out of the 143rd Communications Squadron in Rhode Island. “It shows you how the guard, reserve, and active duty are really just one force. It keeps unity throughout wing because all the squadrons come together for one single purpose.” Devitt said she is grateful to be able to coordinate the Commander’s Challenge, adding that it would be her last event before moving to her next duty station. “This has been a lot of fun,” she said. “I’ve been the community support coordinator for five years at Ramstein. I think this was an excellent event to send me off on my way.”

Suicide prevention month: stopping suicide is everyone’s battle FALLS CHURCH, Va. — September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time for Americans to build awareness and help understand suicide in our culture. More than 40,000 Americans lose their life due to suicide each year and research shows that rates in the military and the general population are very close. The loss of any one person to suicide is a tragedy, and that is why the Air Force is committed to the goal of zero suicides. Making progress towards this goal requires buy in from everyone in the Air Force, from its most senior leaders to junior Airmen. Everyone has a role to play in prevention. The most basic, and often most effective, way to prevent suicide is to make sure that our family members, friends, coworkers and anyone else in our life feel connected and a have sense of belonging in the world. “To combat something as complicated as suicide, we need leaders at every level involved,” said Lt. Col. Alicia Matteson, the Air Force suicide prevention program manager. “We need the front line supervisors, all the way up to squadron, group and wing commanders involved and being connected to their airmen.” Risks for suicide include people with substance abuse problems, those experiencing loss or guilt, feelings

Preventing suicide in the Air Force requires buy in from every level, from senior leadership to junior Airmen. September is Suicide Prevention Month. Strengthening the connections you have in your life, with friends, family, coworkers and wingmen, helps build resiliency and guards against suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

of isolation, and those undergoing stress, both professionally or in their personal life. This is why it is important for commanders at every level to know the Airmen they supervise, and connect to them enough to know if they have experienced an event in their life that might increase their risk for suicide. “If suddenly someone comes in and they’re looking exhausted, or they exhibit signs of depression or mood swings, then ask,” said Dr. Jeffrey Greenberg with the Air Force Suicide Prevention Program. “It may be noth-

ing, and that’s fine, but it is still important to demonstrate to someone that you are concerned about what’s going on with them. We want to increase that, the connection between Airmen.” Building connections helps sustain emotional strength, and creates a sense of belonging that fortifies against suicidal thoughts. This sense of belonging, whether it is to a unit, a family, a friend group, or something else entirely, helps sustain people when times get tough. “You can’t control the world to stop

bad things from happening. Emotional stresses are part of the reality of life,” said Greenberg. “When bad things happen, it causes a strong emotional response – anger, fear, anxiety, sadness or anything. That’s normal. We need to help our Airmen develop the tools to manage those feelings.” This commitment to connection is backed by the Air Force’s adoption of the ACE method, which stands for “Ask, Care, Escort.” These three steps can guide Airmen when confronted with someone contemplating suicide. The Air Force Suicide Prevention website has more information on ACE and other resources to help prevent and respond to suicide. If you, or someone you know, needs immediate help, call the Military Crisis Line and speak to a counselor by dialing 800-273-TALK and pressing 1. Every life lost to a suicide is tragic, but together we can make a real difference. Building bonds with the people around us, even by simple gestures and friendly comments are important, and can sustain people in the face of adversity. “Every Airmen’s job is to look out for each other,” said Matteson. “That’s what it means to be a wingman, and it’s the culture change we need to prevent the tragedy of suicide.”

So why don’t some American drivers stop when an unmarked polizei car pulls ahead with flashing lights? It’s important for drivers to pull over when told to do so by marked or unmarked polizei vehicles, said Lt. Col. Steven Kane, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz director of Emergency Services. “Drivers need to obey polizei instructions for safety reasons,” the DES director explained. “Don’t try to out run unmarked polizei cars or bypass them — you’ll just get in more trouble and incur more fines. Cooperating with the polizei is not only the right thing to do — it’s the law.” A police officer has only seconds to decide how to further handle the situation when a driver doesn’t stop when directed, explained Karin Decker, Polizeipraesidium Westpfalz. “The officer needs to complete the required action — a traffic stop.

When instructing drivers to pull over, unmarked polizei cars will illuminate blue lights in the front and rear windows and a digital screen will display the following messages: STOP, POLIZEI, BITTE FOLGEN >>>>>>>>>>>. (STOP, POLICE, PLEASE FOLLOW). American drivers are required to comply with polizei instructions when given.

Therefore it is important to inform the American community that they must follow orders and signals from a polizei officer — even if the car is unmarked,” she said. So how would drivers know if an unmarked car is a legitimate polizei vehicle? Decker explained that when a polizei officer establishes that a traffic violation has occurred, the unmarked car will illuminate blue lights in the front and rear windows and pull in front of

the affected vehicle. A digital screen will display the following messages: STOP, POLIZEI, BITTE FOLGEN, >>>>>>>>>>>. (STOP, POLICE, PLEASE FOLLOW). At that point, the affected vehicle must immediately comply with directions to pull over, she said. Even with flashing lights and digital displays instructing vehicles to pull over in English and German, some U.S. drivers don’t stop, which leads to a negative situation for the officers, she said.

“The officer then has to reassess the situation and decide which course of action to take,” Decker explained. “Unfortunately, U.S. drivers don’t always believe the unmarked car is a ‘real’ police car and don’t stop. When some U.S. drivers do stop, they distrust the actual offense they are being accused of and the on-the-spot fine.” So how will American drivers know a plain clothes polizei officer driving an unmarked car is legitimate? Decker said polizei officers will present their identification cards to drivers and let them know of the road offense(s) that were committed. Typically, an on-the-spot fine will be issued and a receipt will be provided to the driver, showing the officer’s name and assigned station. When drivers don’t stop, the fine will increase in 70 euro increments and lose one point on his or her driver’s license, she added. Unlike the U.S., Decker said there haven’t been any incidents of criminals posing as polizei officers, but if there is a reasonable suspicion that an unmarked car may not be a polizei vehicle and the stretch of road is desolate, motorists should look for the nearest populated, well-lit area to pull over, such as a rest stop or gas station for safety.

Healthy Aging Awareness Month: Improving the health of older adults by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Health plays a huge part in how we experience life, and determining current health situations can help lead to a longer and happier life. But what about healthy aging? “I think the key to healthy aging is listening to your body,” said Airman 1st Class Randal Marks, 86th Medical Support Squadron medical laboratory technician and frequent gym-goer. “A healthy metabolism, immune system, energy levels and even mental health will promote healthy aging, which aims to extend one’s healthy life expectancy. What makes it so important is, if you don’t listen to your body and

ignore signs and symptoms, it can cost you your life.” As Americans live longer, growth in the number of older adults is unprecedented. In 2014, 14.5 percent (46.3 million) of the U.S. population was aged 65 or older and is projected to reach 23.5 percent (98 million) by 2060, said Sandra Colby and Jennifer Ortman, authors of Projections of the Size and Composition of the U.S. Population: 2014 to 2060. “We tend to think about five years ahead, rather than 30 years from now,” said Staff Sgt. Alexandria HoperLeandry, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron outbound cargo noncommissioned officer in charge. There is an organization called Healthy People, which provides sciPhoto by Staff Sgt. ence-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. Increasing the proportion of older adults who are up-to-date on a core set of clinical preventive services, increasing the proportion of the health care workforce with geriatric certification, and other goals are a part of Healthy People 2020’s initiative. “Feeling, looking, and performing the age that you actually are is aging gracefully,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Maze, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron structural craftsman. “You don’t want to be 30 and physically feel 50.” Improving the health, function, and quality of life of older adults are specifically Healthy People goals, but it’s

one that everyone should be aware of. Physical activity can help prevent disease and injury. However, fewer than 60 percent of older adults engage in physical activity and strength training, according to the Institute of Medicine, Committee on the Future Health Care Workforce for Older Americans, and Board on Health Care Services in Retooling for an aging America. Some common chronic conditions include heart disease, cancer, and diabetes mellitus, the chances for which increase when the aging process isn’t healthy. Emerging issues in the health of older adults are person-centered careplanning, monitoring of health conditions, fair pay and compensation standards for formal and informal caregivers, minimum levels of geriatric training for health professionals and enhanced data on certain subpopulations of older adults. “The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity,” said Capt. Miriam Seville, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron nutrition program coordinator. “But how do we achieve this as we age? It requires reducing stress whenever possible, eating the healthiest foods most of the time, being physically active on a regular basis, and engaging in a variety of positive social activities that add value to our lives, as well as to the lives of those around us.” For more information about Healthy Aging Awareness Month, visit www. airforcemedicine.af.mil to find more information and resources, or call Ramstein’s Health Promotion office at 480-4292 or commercially at 0631-4804249.

BIOGRAPHY Klaus learned from an early age that he had an interest in food and cooking when he started helping in his parent’s restaurant at the age of ten. He enjoyed the environment so much, that he started an apprenticeship at the Augsburger Hotel Riegele at the age of 16. Klaus has been working in hotels and restaurants ever since, including the famous Ecke Stuben in Augsburg and the Post Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Throughout his career he has

been cooking traditional German and international dishes and found his love for crossover cuisine. Many of the recipes Klaus presents are his own crossover creations, which he is happy to share with you. Klaus has been offering private cooking classes for around three years now for groups up to eight people, either in your own home or in Klaus’ kitchen in the KMC, for slow food enjoyment with family and friends.

Ingredients for 4 people 2 red bell peppers 1 yellow bell pepper 2 zucchinis 2 large onions 1 large eggplant 1 pound tomatoes 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced Salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons dried oregano ¼ teaspoon sugar 6 stalks basil ½ pound goat cheese 1 baguette

onions, zucchini and garlic and let simmer for 1.5 minutes. Add egg plant. Season with salt and pepper and let simmer for a further 5 minutes. Add tomatoes and oregano and bring to boil. Let it boil for 1015 minutes on medium heat. Season again with salt and pepper to taste. Add sugar. Note: You can add a half cup of red wine, however omit if you are eating with children. Cut goat cheese in bite size pieces and crumble on top and garnish with basil leaves. Serve with sliced baguette. This recipe comes from the south of France and was a staple for farming people since they always had the ingredients freshly available. Serve with a dry French red wine such as a Vin De Pays or a Beaujolais.

Installation Prevention Team unites key players

Courtesy Photo

A Soldier receives information from Army Community Service at a Summer Safety Event. Army Community Service is one of the many organizations that is a part of the Installation Prevention Team.

by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate The weekly police blotter reports incidents within the Kaiserslautern Military Community such as traffic violations, alcohol-related offenses and domestic abuse. However, there are also situations that aren’t common public knowledge — suicide attempts, financial issues, Soldiers going AWOL. One team spends hours sifting through this data with a sole purpose in mind: to find a way to prevent and mitigate high-risk behavior. The U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Installation Prevention Team is made of several key players representing human services agencies within the community. The team’s mission is to monitor incidents and high-risk behaviors and develop and implement prevention plans. Dr. Camille Owen, Army Substance Abuse Program Risk Reduction

coordinator and IPT co-facilitator, explained that data is collected from each agency monthly and presented at a quarterly meeting comprised of subject matter experts and chaired by USAG RP Commander Col. Keith E. Igyarto. “We look at trends and decide how to mitigate those high-risk areas,” Owen said. “We analyze the data and say, ‘okay — this is what’s going on.’” Data obtained for each Army unit within the garrison footprint includes number of deaths, accidents, self-harm or suicide attempts, drug offenses, alcohol offenses, AWOL, traffic violations, crimes against persons, crimes against property, crimes against society and other relevant statistics. Subject matter experts from Casualty Affairs, Safety, Behavioral Health, ASAP, Army Community Service, Directorate of Emergency Services, Criminal Investigation Command and the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate work together to spot correlations between incidents and

high-risk behavior, along with consideration for situational factors. Though programs and services exist and are available for these high-risk behaviors, Owen and IPT Co-facilitator Leslie Sweeney found they were not being used to their full extent. The IPT has worked to overcome this hurdle by bringing the subject matter experts directly to the battalion, brigade and company commanders to address their unitspecific issues and formulate prevention plans. “If you’re going to affect change, it has to start from the top,” Owen explained. “We’re really driving it in at the brigade or battalion level, so it’s coming from the top down, which is much more effective than a program manager trying to drive into the units from the bottom up,” agreed Sweeney, ASAP manager and Community Readiness and Resiliency Integrator. Sweeney, who took a lead role in standing up the IPT in 2016, has worked hard to fine-tune the process

to make it effective for the community. She explained that the IPT has led to a revitalization of community efforts to address high-risk behaviors. “We go forward as a community instead of as individual programs to get within the units and organizations to complete our training and other mitigations to reduce highrisk behavior,” Sweeney said. “IPT brings all of the players together in one place to discuss support of the readiness and resiliency of our entire community.” The result is that the programs are getting out there and getting into the units like never before with a focus on encouraging Soldiers to make the right choices. When issues arise, Owen stated, “There are programs in place and people who are willing to sit down and listen.” If you are seeking guidance, training or counseling on a behavior mentioned above, ASAP can help point you in the right direction to get help. Culinary hike takes place Saturday, Sunday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The ninth culinary hike in Rodenbach will start 11 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. The biggest culinary hike in the Westpfalz will lead walkers on mostly paved trails to eight stations, where they can taste culinary specialties and wines. “We didn’t hesitate to again organize this unique culinary experience,” said Christoph Molter from the organizing event team. “It’s a perfect family outing since the nearly fourmile loop is paved, making it great for strollers.” Regional butchers and caterers will offer their specialties. Hikers will have the choice of salmon filet made on a Finnish Kota grill with a honey mustard dip, wild game bratwurst, barbecue specialties, flammkuchen and dampfnudeln with wine or vanilla sauce. Vintners from nearby winegrowing regions will serve a variety of wines and prosecco. Hikers have the option to buy a wine pass for €8 at the two information stands. The wine pass is the ticket to the event. “Visitors with a wine pass will be able to taste wines at a reduced price of €2 at each wine station. The wine pass can be filled out to enter a lottery to win a mountain bike,” said Molter. Visitors who do not drink alcohol, do not need to buy the wine pass. Children can jump on a

The world's top protection agent is called upon to guard the life of his mortal enemy,

one of the world's most notorious hitmen. The relentless bodyguard and manipulative assassin have been on the opposite end of the bullet for years and are thrown together for a wildly outrageous 24 hours. During their raucous and hilarious adventure from England to the Hague, they encounter high-speed car chases, outlandish boat escapades and a merciless Eastern European dictator who is out for blood.
