Have you ever had the feeling like you’re home when you are actually thousands of miles away? You could be stationed here like I am, whether you’re in the military or a DOD civilian, and you miss things about home.

BEACH FEELING IN GERMANY

Yes, it’s fabulous here in Europe, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be so close to so much history and beauty, but you still think about home Talking about and visiting the lakes and rivers described below almost made me feel like I’m home

For family vacations when I was a child, we visited my grandmother in a small town in Minnesota, right on the lake We would sit at the kitchen table, sip our coffee and just watch the lake It was different every day, every moment Loons would call to each other and an occasional moose would swim by My love of the water started there, in my grandmother’s kitchen

When I arrived in Germany almost a year ago, I was afraid I would never see the water again, unless I drove 6 hours west (the North Sea) or even farther to the north (the Baltic Sea) I have been very pleasantly surprised to find lovely water relaxation possibilities right here in the KMC and outside our area just a little bit

One Beach Saarbrücken

Bostalsee

In Saarbrücken, right in the middle of the downtown area and theater district, you’ll find One Beach Vacation every day! Chill out in a deckchair and play beach volleyball and beach tennis in Saarland’s biggest sandpit Cool drinks, delicious food and more await you at the beach bar! Opening hours 2025 from April 4 - September 30 daily Monday-Friday: 3-11 p m & Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays 12 - 11 p m One Beach is located at An der Bismarckbrücke 1, 66121 Saarbrücken Find all information about this location at https://wwwonebeachde/

Schalkenmehrener Maar

If you had told me there was ever a volcano in Germany, I would have said, from a point of ignorance, that you couldn’t possibly be correct I would be wrong and not for the first time This Maar is only an hour-and-a-half from the KMC area and what a beautiful setting! There are three separate trails around the lakes (craters), one of which may require that you be in reasonably good shape When you’re done, enjoy a drink at one of the cafes in the village of Schalkenmehren You will find this treasure north of Trier, somewhat near Cochem Castle To get there punch PittKreuzbergweg 8, 54552 Schalkenmehren into your GPS

Km 689 Cologne Beach Club

In Cologne (Köln) there are “beach clubs” situated right in the city on the river and in other locations One club, the “km 689 Cologne Beach Club” is rated as “very good” by one of the travel rating groups and there is a restaurant on site Admission is is a minimum consumption fee of 15 Euro Rheinparkweg 2, 50679 Cologne

Strandbad Otto-Maigler-See, Hürth

Near Bonn, northwest of Frankfurt, is an amazing lake with all the amenities you would search for in an organized beach experience Boating, skiing, sunning, beach volleyball, and so much more They even have event space for weddings On Aug 5, there is a Yoga Beach Festival Admission is 6 euro per day for adults, 3 euro for kids and parking is 4 euro per car per day Well worth it for a day of playing in the sun, shade, and water To get there use Schnellermaarstrasse, 50354 Hürth, for your GPS Find all information about this location at http://otto-maigler-see de/

Gelterswoog

Gelterswoog is very close to Kaiserslautern, just south of Hohenecken, where you can enjoy a sandy beach, grass, boat rentals and a playground for the kids Gelterswoog, 67661 Kaiserslautern Find all information about this location at https://gelterswoog-kl de/

When I visited Bostalsee (near Nohfelden) I felt I had found that piece of home I was missing and it was a big, wonderful piece! Surrounding the beautiful lake, there were beaches, a marina, restaurants, and quaint beach houses I grew up in southern California where ocean villages were commonplace I spent the last 20 years in the Puget Sound area of the Pacific Northwest where beaches are abundant I didn’t know how much I would miss the water until I could no longer see it every day Then I drove to Bostalsee, the largest recreational lake in southwest Germany, and I felt it again; the calming air that surrounds a huge lake “See” at the end of a word means “lake” so the Germans just say “the Bostalsee,” not lake Bostalsee Whatever you call it, there were sailboats, paddle boats, and a “boat” that looked like a swan! All kinds of water vessels were at home on this lake It was a beautiful sight

To enjoy the around-the-lake trail or to just sit on a bench and enjoy the view, there is no charge For a real beach experience at Strandbad Bosen, day passes are 2 Euro for kids and 6 Euro for adults Be sure to also bring change for parking meters The Strandbad includes a large grassy area for sunning, a long strip of sand, and an area with a water slide for the kids (or for you)! There are at least three food vendors serving pizza, ice cream and more

You’ve probably enjoyed many lakes or river beaches in your life Swimming, sunbathing, fishing, skiing and other water activities that everyone loves Bostalsee, which will challenge your past ideas of the most beautiful lake you’ve seen, is only 30 to 45 minutes away from the KMC! You can take your partner, spouse, kids, friends, or even just yourself Want to learn to sail? There is a sail school as well as a wind-surfing school Other amenities include not one but two sandy beaches, a place for beach volleyball, mini-golf, and a place to rent pedal boats, electric boats and more There is camping and you can also rent family cabins There are modest guest houses in the area for less than 50 euro with a large selection between 50 and 100 euro per night If you want to splurge, the Hotel Seezeit Lodge has absolutely everything a complete spa offers; swimming, relaxing, massages, taking a sauna in the outdoor sauna village, having a facial, or using their special serene meditation areas There is also a renowned restaurant with the finest cuisine You will be lacking nothing

These are a few of the many opportunities we have here in the KMC — some close, some far, but none more than 2 5 hours away Many of them have web sites where you can glean much more information than I have space to share with you here You really can have your beach vacation right here within your reach You don’t need to get on a plane or take a tour bus for hours and hours You can be here in the Rheinland-Pfalz, in Saarland or North Rhine-Westphalia enjoying your own piece of paradise!

EUROPE’S BIGGEST SANDSTONE CAVE

SCHLOSSBERGHÖHLEN HOMBURG

What makes the tour so fun is not only do you get to explore but everyone gets to wear a helmet, so everyone looks like they are ready to mine! Helmets are, of course, worn for safety reasons and not your friends’ entertainment

The temperature in the caves stays around 10 degrees Celsius all year long so it is best to dress in layers Before you start your tour, you will receive a quick introduction on what will await you once inside as well as the ‘house’ rules I am sure we have heard the saying, “you can look but not touch” and these rules also apply down below Once everyone is below, the tour guide will give you a brief summary on how these man-made tunnels came to be and everyone gets to look for a fossil

Expect to be amazed by these caves and their structures, which are cleverly set-off by lighting in various colors The caves are 5 km in length, although your visit only takes you through about 800 meters during a 40 to 50 minute tour

Here’a a little bit on the history of the caves:

The Schlossberg-caves were made by man So they are, strictly speaking, a mine Originally, in the 17th century, the extracted sand was used for the production of glass and also as moulding sand for the production of cast iron and for polishing for wood surfaces

After the French occupation (1679-1714) the caves were forgotten about until they were rediscovered in the 1930s by playing children

During the Second World War they served as protection against air raids There is an impressive bunker area of the modern age which is directly connected with the Schlossberg caves In the 1950s the bunker was built as a government shelter by Johannes Hoffmann, a local politician at the time

Recently the Schlossberg caves were extensively reconstructed with generous support of the Ministry of Economics The newly constructed safety facilities not only offer protection but also are integral elements worth seeing during this unforgettable experience

The caves are open from April until October from 9

The Schlossberghöhlen in Homburg, Europe’s biggest red sandstone cave, is an awesome place to visit. It is the perfect excursion for the whole family.

a m to 5 p m Entry for adults is €7 and children up to the age of 16, €5 Family and group rates are available It is best to call for reservations and also for an English tour Strollers cannot be brought into the caves, since the terrain is mainly sand with steep staircases

Once you have been through the tour of the caves you can walk up to the Hohenburg castle ruins which lie right above the caves and offer a spectacular view of Homburg

The caves are a circa 30-minute drive from the KMC Visit www homburgerschlossberghoehlen de for more information or call 06841-2064 for reservations

STRASBOURG — MAIS OUI!

It’s perhaps the most unique city within a few hours driving distance from the Kaiserslautern Military Community but most people here have never driven south, crossed the Rhine near Baden-Baden and experienced Strasbourg, France. It’s without a doubt the nearest city to us with the most to offer.

Altogether historic, ancient, modern and stylish, the city has 250,000 people living on the inside perimeter but around 500,000 total if you include the outer edges It’s not a metropolis by any means, but Strasbourg is in many ways comparable to the much larger Paris in that it has a certain sprawl to it that’s easy to navigate If you tell a European native you are from Strasbourg or you’ve been to Strasbourg, they give you instant credibility for being inthe-know about what’s really good in this part of the world

The main attraction of this fantastic city is the cathedral — building started in the 12th century — that looms large over the skyline Strasbourg Muenster (Cathedral) was intended to have two spires but the second one was never finished Made of a granite-like local pink Rose des Vosges sandstone, the church’s ornamental front entrance areas feature intricate sculptures of a variety of ancient biblical and period events This is a fantastic zoom lens photo opportunity as you imagine master sculp-

tors and builders hand crafting the building through the years

Strasbourg is indeed home to the NATO/EU Eurocorps creation and there is the popular astronomical clock that features a pay-towatch chime event each day, but that sort of stuff is for sure worth skipping Instead, take a look at the Strasbourg skyline from the top level of the cathedral or on the terrace at the Musée De L’Art Moderne, where you can sip a refreshment, eat a sandwich or salad, and just enjoy relaxing from the long strolls you are bound to take if you come here

Walking is commonplace in Strasbourg where, like Amsterdam, nearly all the residents appear physically fit and in shape

Tramway is Strasbourg’s wonderful above ground train transport system, along with tons of city busses, and many VELHOP bicycles lined up on sidewalk racks, ready for rental Walking thoroughfares and a city layout that is easy to navigate on foot make Strasbourg alluring for people of all ages A 15-minute train ride will take you

from downtown Strasbourg to the first German town on the route, Kehl, and there is a remarkable fluidity between the two countries that has always been visible in this fun-loving town

“Strasbourg and the Alsace area have been part of both Germany and France alternately through the years,” says Jeanne, a longtime resident and expert on the city “There is a local dialect spoken here and people from both countries understand it There is a marvelous restaurant, Aux Armes de Strasbourg, at Gutenberg Square, that is very Alsacian but also very German There are paintings on the wall and interesting woodwork They serve very good dishes that are representative of both countries and with a good balance between price and quality ”

There are many restaurants scattered around Strasbourg that specialize in the Franco-German delicacy, Flammkuchen, which is pizza-like, with thin crust topped with ham or sausage and crème fraiche It’s just as good as what

you might find in Rothenburg and Munich or at a small festival in Landstuhl

Another brilliantly-run restaurant is La Maison Kammerzell, which operates inside Strasbourg’s oldest dwelling, a hotel dating back to the 15th century La Maison Kammerzell serves fish and pork dishes indigenous to the Alsace area and a variety of interesting desserts are served to top off these hearty meals

A trip to Strasbourg will make you want to return for many more visits, as it is a place that American people love to take relatives who visit here Driving south, down through Zweibruecken is the best way to see the backroads and it’s tempting to stop along the way and sample the culture that in one word could be described as ‘welcoming ’ There are places to buy jellies, jams, yard décor woodworking and birdhouses, or wine

The wine industry is alive and well around Strasbourg One romantic place we walked to for a nightcap was the splendidly run XX Wine bar, which had cheese sam-

plings spread out on small boards and allowed us to unwind after a good meal elsewhere before heading back to tuck into our rental apartment beds

Wineries are situated in and around small towns, overlooked by the Vosges mountain range that covers much of the southern expanse below Strasbourg Many of the wineries are between Colmar and Strasbourg, all within 15-20 minute drives by car or on board the many coaches and busses that shuttle people to these areas daily There are tours of the cellars and facilities, complimentary tastings, items for sale, and lots of time at the end to do things back inside the city limits

Ponts Couverts and city quarter ”Little France”

When shopping for typicallyFrench items, people gravitate to two areas of the city close by one another and containing astounding indoor architecture La Galleries de Lafayette and La Printemps are open daily and not the sorts of department stores you might find in American malls Both can tend to be pricey but each contains authentic merchandise representing the Alsace area and France as a whole

Keeping with the theme that Strasbourg itself is a walking town and flat enough to allow for long treks, the best area to walk and look is the La Petite France district This part of town is Strasbourg as it was centuries ago Most of the dwellings trace to the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries and sit along beautiful canals with shops, restaurants and

a general pedestrian-friendly feel to the area La Petite France is a splendid place to spend time during fall, when leaves are changing but the weather hasn’t gotten too cool Different parts of La Petite France are reminiscent of Venice, Paris, Amsterdam and Bruges, keeping with the city’s seeming desire or quest to try and be all things to all people

The city features one of Europe’s most modern train stations and airports A website description of Strasbourg reads, “Europe is alive here – the Europe of democracy, the Europe which belongs to its citizens, is being constructed here to deal with the major issues currently facing our society, such as education, industrial modernization, solidarity, the change in energy sources and eco-responsibility,” as

quoted on www en strasbourg eu

Those words offer the Strasbourgian mantra or theme, in a city that never ceases to flaunt its cultural diversity, with both strong roots to the past and a continuing push to stay on the cutting edge or what is current and what is still to come See works by Rodin, Monet, or Picasso at the Museum of Modern Art, the many aged items showcased at the Musée Historique, stage performances or music concerts at L’Opera House, La Theatre National and La Maillon performing arts center, ballet and dance at the South Pole (Pole Sud), the annual Musica festival, and the

venerable Museum de L’ouevre Notre Dame which holds artifacts discovered around the city’s famous cathedral

The biggest protestant church in Europe — St Thomas — has a vibrant congregation and something going on all the time St Pierre Le Vieux is a joint catholic and protestant venture that also serves a wide community of theists Pont Couverts (covered bridges) are sights to behold that date back to the construction of a protective wall in this 2000-year-old town What’s not to like about Strasbourg? Take a trip there and see if you can figure it out for yourself

THE VINEYARD NEXT DOOR: GERMANY’S EXCELLENT WINE REGIONS

Most new arrivals to Germany are familiar with the quality of German beer. Rightfully so. Beer is governed as food here. There are bound to be great choices. But many may not know that Germany is also home to an incredible array of high quality wines, most of which are grown within a stone’s throw from the KMC.

If you don’t know much about wine, or even about German wine, prepare to be impressed You should also get ready for some amazing day trips

Thank you, Romans

The history of winemaking in Germany stretches back millennia As Roman soldiers made their way north and conquered new lands, they brought vines with them (which was easier than bringing huge barrels of wine over the Alps) In the river valleys of what is now Germany, they found excellent terrain and began cultivating grapes

In one form or another, that practice hasn’t stopped since Winemaking became more regulated under Charlemagne, was governed (and improved) by medieval monasteries, and was shaken up by Napoleon And though the sheer amount of land used to grow vines has diminished through the centuries, the regions that remain are excellent

Surrounded by vineyards

The KMC is almost literally surrounded by vineyards The Pfalz and Rheinhessen regions flank the eastern side, and the Nahe and Mosel regions block the north If you head south, you’ll cross a border and run smack into the French Alsace (which is a subject for a different article) Either way, you can find amazing vineyards and fascinating stories nearby –usually an hour or less from where you live Here are some of the highlights:

makes for a wonderful complement to barbecued food

• Pfalz. Located just a short drive from the KMC, the Pfalz region is well-known in Europe for the Bad Dürkheim wine festival It also produces an outstanding array of white wines, such as Riesling and Pinot Gris The Pfalz also famously produces the red Dornfelder wine, which often

• Rheinhessen. This is one of Germany’s oldest wine regions: the Romans loved this area Today, huge amounts of grapes are grown on the western bank of the Rhein river For a long time, white wines like the Silvaner dominated here Recently, Rheinhessen vintners have also begun specializing in red wines and sparkling wines Travelers from the KMC can reach this region in about 30 minutes

• Nahe. The Nahe region is small but mighty Named after the river that flows through an intense variety of landscapes, many grape varieties thrive here These include the MüllerThurgau and Riesling (both white wines), and the red varieties Dornfelder and Pinot Noir

Often overlooked in favor of the larger Rheinhessen or the picturesque Mosel, the Nahe is kind of like a secret hidden in plain sight Visit a village like Niederhausen, which is a just over an hour away from Kaiserslautern, and enjoy

• Mosel. Though most of the great Mosel villages (like Bernkastel-Kues or Piesport) are a little over an hour away from the KMC, the region often feels like a whole other country It’s because the terrain is jaw-droppingly beautiful Steep curving roads, hidden valleys, clean water — it’s simply lovely The white Mosel wines are excellent Because many of them are slightly sweeter than usual, Mosel whites are often a good entrée for Americans who are just learning to enjoy wine

Explore a lot, sip a little

Once you start digging in, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll find There are also grand wine growing regions

near Stuttgart and Baden-Baden, and the opportunities to explore these regions are almost endless

A quick note: The culture surrounding alcoholic drinks is often very different in Europe than it is in the United States In Germany, wine is less a functional beverage (ie something you drink for the sake of drinking) and more something to be savored and experienced Drinking wine means appreciating it for the history, culture, and beautiful regions from which it comes It is also, almost always, way better when paired with food

For a complete (and fascinating) history about wines in Germany, be sure to check out one of the wine museums in Oppenheim (an hour away from Kaiserslautern) or BernkastelKues (90 minutes away)

DECLUTTERING YOUR HOME

Everyone wants to live a simpler lifestyle, but it’s not always obvious how to go about doing that. By getting rid of the clutter that clogs up your home, you’ll be able to create a more serene and peaceful place, while also making your spaces more functional and easier to use. If you’ve let things go for a long time, then the challenge of cleaning out the mess may seem daunting. The good news is that there are a number of tricks you can use to divide up the task and even make it fun.

Anywhere box

The simplest way to start cleaning the clutter is to use an “anywhere” box This can be a simple cardboard or plastic bin that is set in a room that is particularly disorganized Whenever you see something that belongs in another space, you can simply dump it in the box rather than running all over the house to put things in order Then every week or so you can carry the box from room to

The store box

The use of a store box is a similar decluttering method Basically you go through a room and place anything that is extraneous to its daily function into the box Then label the box and place it in a closet Over the course of the next few months you can see which items you end up fetching and which ones get forgotten This will inform you as to what can be gotten rid of And when the time comes to get rid of it – you can donate it to your local thrift store, or make a few dollars by selling it

Hanger experiment

Another trick that uses time to determine worth is the closet hanger experiment This involves taking all of the outfits that you have in your closet and hanging them facing in the same direction Then whenever you take an outfit out to wear, it should be replaced facing the opposite direction After about six months this will tell you which clothes you use, and which can be donated

12-12-12 challenge

through the house and find 12 items that can be donated, 12 that can be thrown away and 12 that can be put back in their proper place When played with kids or spouses, this can be a fun challenge contest that also helps to declutter the home

If you want to turn your organizational efforts into a game, then you could try the 12-12-12 challenge That requires you to go

When dealing with personal items, you may get emotional, especially when deciding which things to get rid of You should try to do this process over time, in small partitions so that you don’t get overwhelmed and just end up quitting You can also help ease any sadness

you may feel by giving items away to friends or bundling them up for charities Knowing that your previously treasured possessions are still being actively used may help you to part with them

KEEP YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY SAFE THIS SUMMER

Summer is a great time for the outdoors, grilling, picnics and relaxing. But just because we want to have fun doesn’t mean we can’t stay safe. Here are some tips to help make your summer the best, and healthiest, one yet.

THE SUN

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy, but sunburn on my shoulders makes me cry We tend to wear less clothing in the warmer months, which leaves our skin exposed Kids and adults are at a greater risk for sunburns during the summer months According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 58 percent of adults practice proper sun safety procedures Put aside your excuses and put on the sunscreen, preferably one with a sun protection factor of at least 15 and both ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B protection Put it on at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun and apply generously Be sure to take these additional precautions:

THE HEAT

Heat-related illnesses claim the lives of hundreds of people each year These tips will help you prepare for working or playing outside during the hot summer months

• Stay inside during the hottest hours of the day, which are from 10 a m to 4 p m

• Drink plenty of water or other nonalcoholic beverages

According to a heat exhaustion study done by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, it’s important to drink at least a gallon of liquid per day when temperatures climb above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, or 32 degrees Celsius

• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that is light in color

• Move your exercise routine to early in the morning or late in the evening

• Never ever leave a person or a pet in the car during hot conditions while you run to do a quick errand People and animals can succumb to heat exposure and death very quickly in a hot car, as cars can become overheated quickly

THE WATER

THE BUGS

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 4 years old Additionally, 390 children die each year on average from water-related accidents

Whether you’re at the pool, beach, lake or water park this summer, keep these safety tips in mind

• Avoid swallowing pool water or even getting it in your mouth

• Even if there is a lifeguard on duty, keep an eye on your children It only takes a few moments for a drowning to occur

• Never swim alone or in unsupervised locations Teach children to always swim with a buddy

• Don’t use swimming aids, such as water wings, for children in place of life jackets or preservers

• Shower before swimming and wash your hands after using the restroom or changing diapers

• Take children on bathroom breaks often

No discussion of safety topics for summer would be complete without talking about bugs Stinging insects are busy buzzing from flower to flower, and there are many varieties of bugs, like ticks and mosquitoes, waiting for their next innocent victim To help make yourself and your child a less-attractive meal, avoid scented perfumes and soaps in the summer as well as pools of stagnant water, open food and gardens heavy with blooms Also, consider using a bug repellent that contains diethyltoluamide, more commonly known as DEET Follow these tips for applying bug repellant to make sure you are fully covered

• Never use bug repellents under clothing, only on exposed skin or clothes

• Keep repellent away from your nose, mouth and eyes, and be careful with it around your ears

• Start with a thin film of repellent

• If this doesn’t keep the bugs away, use more

• Most repellents should be washed off your skin and clothing every day

• Don’t allow children to handle bug repellent, and don’t apply it to their hands

• Repellents with oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on kids under 3 years old

• Seek shade, especially during the midday hours of 10 am to 4 p m , when UV rays are strongest and do the most damage

• Cover up with clothing to protect exposed skin A long-sleeved shirt and long pants with a tight weave are best

• Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears and neck

• Grab shades that wrap around and block as close to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays as possible

• Reapply sunscreen throughout the day

SUMMER TIPS FOR YOUR KIDS

(FROM

A DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVE)

Summer is almost here, which means great opportunities for family fun! But did you know that many (if not most) of our favorite (and some less-thanfavorite) summer activities can also help your child to develop in a healthy, age-appropriate fashion?

Here is a list of activities that will help make this summer a winner — both in terms of great memories and child development

HIKE

We all know taking a family hike is great for the body and mind But, developing your visual system? Game changer! In this day and age of 2-dimensional screens, going out in nature offers amazing benefits to one’s visual system, especially for babies and young children with developing nervous systems Being in the woods supports your eyes being able to focus between distances (accommodation), seeing in 3-D (depth perception), following a moving target (tracking — hi birdie!) and allowing both eyes to focus together on an object at the same time (convergence)

PEE

If your tot is still working on potty training, summer is the perfect time to increase his/her awareness

Simply playing outside “in the buff” will allow your toddler to, let’s face it, pee in the yard and visually see how things work By eliminating the mystery, they will feel empowered to be free with the pee! Then, give them a target (a frisbee?) and eventually put the potty chair out there!

BUBBLES

Want the simplest, cheapest activity that will actually help develop your kids’ mouth muscles and calm their nervous systems? For the older ones, give them some gum and have a bubble blowing contest! For the little ones, use regular bubbles for the contest (they can still chew the gum!) Improving oral-motor coordination can positively impact speech development

ROCKS

Need a summer craft project? Collect rocks and paint them You can decorate your garden, give them to friends and neighbors or even take a walk in the woods and leave one to surprise a fellow hiker While you’re there, have your kid build a fairy house using rocks, sticks, moss, leaves, pinecones, etc It’s a “thing” these days Really! Check it out online

SWIM

Swimming is your “one stop shop” for building up your kiddo First, being in the water provides body pressure (proprioception), which calms the body and brain Swimming also promotes body awareness and motor planning, which are needed to function in PE class as well as in the grocery store! Besides improving strength and coordination of the big muscles in the body, swimming also improves oral motor strength and coordination!

CLOUDS

When was the last time you really stopped and looked up at the clouds? Well, this summer make it a whole event for your kids! Pack a picnic, bring a huge sheet or blanket and make the announcement that you are taking a trip (to the backyard! to the park! to the roof!) to search for pictures in the sky What shapes do you see? Does anyone see an animal? I see an elephant!

CROWDS

by Sunny

If you have a very sensitive tween or teen, attending a county fair, Fourth of July festival or even going bowling can be overstimulating Lots of teens wear ear buds, hats, hoodies or sunglasses for a reason They are trying to reduce visual and auditory stimuli that might stress them out Choose your battles Does it really matter if your teen is wearing ear buds in a crowd or if your 12-year-old wears her hoodie like a permanent extension of her body?

DRINK

Stay hydrated! It’s tough to get kids to drink enough Did you know fresh fruit is a natural way to hydrate the body? Especially watermelon, which is 92% water – wow! Other high hydration options are strawberries, peaches, cantaloupes and oranges Sports bottles and crazy straws can also motivate kids to drink water

FIREWORKS

We all seem to have an extreme reaction to fireworks Most of us are thrilled by them, but a select few who have sensory defensiveness can become really distressed Think “Fight or Flight” response If your kiddo is in the this category, here are some things to help him cope Create a “social story” with the goal of preparing your youngster for what she is about to experience Maybe look at fireworks videos online and talk about them beforehand Emphasize that they will start and then they will end While you’re watching the actual fireworks, help your child focus on something other than the noise Example: Do you think the next one will be white or red? How many swirly ones can you count? Chewing gum or eating a chewy snack can muffle the sound, as can noise cancelling headphones or ear buds with music Simply snuggling your child and holding him in a deep bear hug can help him feel calmer Or, give him something heavy to hold, like a heavy backpack or a younger sibling!

PLAY

Go to the playground! (Thank you, captain obvious!) But, seriously, it’s the best thing you can do on a consistent basis to support your child’s motor development, social skills, problem solving and the list goes on! Monkey bars strengthen the shoulder girdle and postural muscles as well as develop the arches in the hands for fine motor work Swinging and sliding stimulate the vestibular system which is connected to speech development and organized motor movements Digging in the sandbox stimulates the tactile system and promotes creative thinking Playground yay!!!

One of my favorite things about living in Germany is how dog-friendly everything is. I take my Italian Greyhound just about everywhere I go. And now that the weather’s warm, I’m planning even more outdoor adventures together. Here are a few things to keep in mind for your four-legged friend during the warmer months.

SUMMER WITH DOGS

Heat

Don’t let Fido dehydrate in the summer sun Most restaurants are more than willing to provide you with a bowl and tap water

Simply ask, “Haben Sie Wasser für meinen Hund, bitte?”

Bees

As I write, my small dog it sitting on my lap with her mouth swollen like a chipmunk after eating a bee I wish I could say she learned a lesson from all of this

Seeing as this is the second time we’ve been through this, I doubt it

One sting is generally not dangerous But if you notice extreme swelling or trouble breathing, head to the vet as soon as possible If your dog has had multiple stings or had a bee in its mouth, call your vet Bee stings in the mouth can be life-threatening It can cause swelling that can make it hard for the dog to breathe

Ticks

We love to take hikes in the many wooded trails in the area Ticks also love grassy trails, so it’s important to check your dog for them every day You can buy inexpensive tick removal tools at the vet or online

Preparing for Holiday fireworks

Independence day celebrations are around the corner and while most of us look forward to the holiday, your four-legged family member may have a hard time coping with the fireworks you love so much Here are a few ideas to help relieve stress:

Make your home escapeproof: Some dogs run when they get scared Close all doors and windows, close all curtains or rolladens and turn on the lights Turning on the TV for some background sounds may also help disguise the noise

Go for a walk: Tire your dog out before it gets dark Go for a long walk, or even a swim, if you have a lake nearby Make

sure your dog is exhausted by the end of the evening to help settle them better

Create a hiding space: If your dog likes to hide away, create a doggy den under a safe space with blankets, their bed and favorite cuddly toy

Once the fireworks start, be there for your dog to comfort them, don’t leave them alone, if they are scared If they hide away, let them, your pooch will come out again, once it feels safe

SAY ‘JA’ TO GERMANY’S GREAT OUTDOORS: 4 GREAT DAY HIKES

If you like hiking, Germany is your jam Nearly one-third of the country is forested Wellmarked walking trails are everywhere Organized groups of jolly Volksmarchers wander purposefully during every season of the year The Alps are just right there If you’re looking for world-class scenery, and you don’t mind a bit of a physical challenge, then here are four day hikes that are guaranteed to give you a taste of the best summer hiking that Germany has to offer

Wine Country Special: Ehrbach Gorge Dream Loop

This is indeed a Dream Loop Located in a beautiful, heavily forested part of Germany that sits almost equidistant between the Mosel and Rhine rivers (and thus, not far from wine country in either direction), this hike seems like something that shouldn’t quite be real But it is real The hike begins and ends at a very conveniently located parking lot next to the trailhead then winds its way east along a wooded ridge for less than two miles Cute little waterfalls and streams are also yours to enjoy, as well as frequent opportunities for off-trail scrambling You’ll gain a couple hundred meters of elevation as the trail bends back west But the views are worth it!

• Length/approximate hiking time: 10 kilometers, 3 hours

• Level up: Book a post-hike room and a meal at Sankt Goar. Watch the sun set over the Rhine and enjoy a glass of chilled Riesling.

• Distance to Parking: 1.5 hours from K-town; Wanderparkplatz

Traumschleife Ehrbachklamm, Mittelstraße, 56154 Boppard, Germany

Incredible Eifel: The Green Hell Tour

Ironically, this ‘hell’ hike is the easiest hike in this bunch With just a little over 100 meters of ascent, the Naturpark Süd-

eifel Trail #55 won’t have you huffing and puffing too much But that doesn’t mean your breath won’t be taken away

Located in a lovely valley just outside of Bollendorf, in the sparsely populated Eifel region, the ‘Green Hell’ gets its name from the sheerwalled gorges that are covered in green moss One of Germany’s most beautiful hikes, you will be tempted to stop constantly to snap photos of bizarre rock formations and cool gorge views But don’t forget to just enjoy being in this amazing place!

• Length/approximate hiking time: 5.5 km / 2 hours

• Level up: Download the ‘Green Hell’ loop tour audio guide and have a listen…surprisingly entertaining! https://www.felsenland-suedeifel. de/a-audiotour-gruene-hoelle

• Distance to Parking: 1 hour 45 minutes from Kaiserslautern

Black Forest Fun: Schliffkopf Loop Trail

The Black Forest gets lots of attention as a driving destination, especially for motorcyclists It is also an amazing hiking destination One of the best is the loop trail that begins at the parking lot next to the Allerheiligen church ruins and then climbs fairly steeply for 500+ meters up and over the Schliffkopf, which is a round, beautiful, sort-of mountain

So why take this hike? First of all, hiking in the Black Forest is epic Even on the clearest days, the place has a hazy mystique about it that you won’t find anywhere else in the world Second, the foliage, waterfalls, and views are outstanding, especially once you gain some elevation: You’ll get a different perspective on the Rhine Valley here than you will closer to home And finally, you’ll get a solid physical challenge without it being too difficult

Top of Germany: Zugspitze Summit Trail

We’re going to finish with a hike to Germany’s highest point: The peak of the Zugspitze A disclaimer: You don’t technically have to walk this one Lots of people prefer to take the Gletscherbahn cable car to the peak (and back) instead

But it’s more fun — and rewarding — to do it the hard way

And one of the best things about the Zugspitze is that there are many routes, for all levels of hikers, to the top of the mountain You can do an all day up-and-back or combine an up route with a cable car ride down (or vice versa) The trails are incredibly well marked

Take note, though: This hike is very different than any of the other hikes in this list It’s high altitude, high intensity, and the weather can change quickly So prepare well before you go

• Length/approximate hiking time: can range from a few kilometers (if you ride up and spend some time scrambling at the peak) to 20+ kilometers; times can range from a few hours to all day

• Level up: Book a room at the Edelweiss Hotel in Garmisch, and use it as a home base for your hike.

• Distance to parking: approximately 5.5 hours to parking areas

Essentials

• Check your fitness levels. All the hikes here are moderately difficult. Know your limits.

• Gear up. Good shoes (and preferably boots) are essential. Trekking poles can make a big difference. Always bring rain gear. In mountains, especially, the weather can change in an instant.

• Length/approximate hiking time: 13 km / 5.5 hours

• Level up: Book a room at an Alsatian wine village across the border in France. Once your hike is complete, treat yourself to an amazing meal and a pastry or two afterward.

• Distance to Parking: 2.5 hours from Kaiserslautern

• Sustain yourself. Bring food to keep you energized, and lots of water (we’re talking at least a liter per person, and preferably more for a moderate day hike) to keep you hydrated.

• Navigate well. Download maps for your hike using an app like Komoot, AllTrails, or Mapy. Bring a backup charger for your phone.

WILD, RUGGED, AND BEAUTIFUL: SUMMER IN SOUTHWEST ICELAND

Living Like a Local

Many would-be visitors to Iceland are tempted to tackle it all in one go After all, it looks small on a map - just right for a driving tour That’s one way to do it Or, you could find a rental house or apartment in the southwest – just a short-ish drive from the sole airport on the island – and live like a local Which means that, rather than spending your days slogging from point A to point B, you might slow down enough to get a sense of authentic Iceland

Living like a local has other advantages, too First, you save a lot of travel time by post-

Looking for the adventure of a lifetime that is fairly easy to pull off?

Consider Iceland. Specifically, consider immersing yourself in Iceland’s mighty southwest. You’ll find glaciers, history, mountains, hot springs, waterfalls, wilderness, and a landscape like no other.

ing up somewhere like Hveragerdi or Selfoss, which are 1-1 5 hours away from Keflavik Airport Both have grocery stores, bakeries, pharmacies, and great restaurants, and both are set in gorgeous locations, tucked between mountains and the sea Also, you’ll have bandwidth to visit one of the local pools, for which Iceland is famous For a fraction of the price, you’ll have access to a place that is better than most spas

What to do in Southeast Iceland

This list could be a dozen items long (and longer, if you included the capital city) But if

you want to get a sense of Iceland in all its wild majesty, here are three places to start

1. Take a glacier tour.

Glaciers are crucial for Iceland Along with volcanoes, they shape the country on an almost daily basis (they don’t call Iceland the land of fire and ice for nothing) They are also rarer and rarer nowadays Getting the chance to tour a glacier will help you appreciate the beauty and utility of these incredible chunks of ice

So sign up for a glacier tour While a lot of people are interested in Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, I would recommend

Mýrdalsjökull It’s smaller, less touristy, and a fairly short drive from the Selfoss region (if you’re using that as a base) Plus, the drive to the glacier is amazing: You’ll ride in a custom giant van across a savage landscape that goes right past where one of the opening scenes from Star Wars’ Rogue One was filmed It’s like what driving across the moon must be like When you get to the glacier, make sure you’ve brought a positive attitude and a sense of adventure Because you are about to strap on crampons and spend a couple of hours exploring icy mountainsides and awesome ice caves

2. Go for a horse ride.

Some of you may not like horses I’m not usually a big fan myself But Iceland’s horses are…different Literally Icelandic horses are directly descended from the horses the Vikings brought when they showed up a thousand years ago Since then, no other type of horse has been brought on to the island And when Icelandic horses leave, they can never return

The result is a horse population that is patient, strong, sure-footed, likes heavy loads, and tolerates terrible weather Which means that whether you’re a greenhorn or an experienced cowboy, you’re basically guaranteed to have a smooth ride And if the sun graces you with its presence, you’ll find that there is no better way to see Iceland than on horseback Tours are widely available

3. Hike to hot springs. Iceland is also famous for its volatile geology Volcanoes still erupt frequently, and white smoke from thermal vents can be seen all over southeast Iceland Icelanders make good use of this heat: They’re world leaders in using geothermal energy to produce electricity

They’re also world leaders in soaking themselves in hot springs, and you would do well to see why Spend a couple of hours hoofing it through a rocky, mountainous landscape, and you’ll be ready to soak for a while when you get there

Two tips: First, make sure you bring a suit and a towel There will be places to change at most official hot springs, and it’s frowned upon to not wear a suit You’ll also want the towel when you get out of the water, because summer is cold and windy on most ‘nice’ summer days Secondly, make sure you only use designated hot springs bathing areas There are plenty of other hot springs that are way too hot to soak in: They are highly dangerous, and are to be avoided

Essentials

Getting to Iceland is straightforward Many reasonably priced direct flights depart from the European mainland

Once you’re there, renting a car is essential There are plenty of good car hire options at Keflavik Airport Take care while driving Fog and rain can strike pretty much anytime, anywhere And it’s serious stuff Take Google Maps ETAs with a grain of salt

Bring good rain gear, and even cold weather gear Average summer high temperatures are between 10-15 degrees Celsius (5059 degrees Farenheit) And on a glacier, summer feels like winter

FOOD REFUSALS:

ESTABLISHING HEALTHY EATING HABITS FOR CHILDREN

Grown adults shun onions, won’t touch cooked egg yolks and they pick out green vegetables on communal pizzas It is quite common for people to prefer one type of cheese over another, or fancy one particular brand of French fry or lunch meat over others With so many options and so many opportunities to taste different foods, developing strong eating preferences is easy

Most parents and children battle it out over these eating habits and preferences quite publically Unlike other routines, such as bathing, dressing or bedtime, eating routines are more public and visible to others outside the home

Children who are hard to feed often draw more attention to themselves than children who are difficult to put to bed It’s easy to understand, therefore this is why parents often become more stressed during dinner time than during bedtime

Children have to eat, and parents feel as if it is their job not only to feed them, but to ensure that they eat enough and right Parents worry about how much or how little their children eat, and this causes stress

The parent-child relationship around feeding remains one of the most challenging and humbling jobs of parenting

Here are the four main big food fights parents and children have: Noncompliance (refuses to eat what is served), complaining about what is offered, not “eating enough” and leaving the table during mealtimes

A lot of parents worry that their child is not eating enough Adults forget that children have smaller stomachs, and assume that their portions should be larger It is helpful to remember that the size of a toddler’s stomach is close to the size of their fist

A dozen or so “bites” is enough for toddlers

The best advice for parents is to ask their pediatrician if a child is at a healthy weight for his or her age Parents should strive not

to worry about how much a child eats during their meal

Most of the time, children tend to get enough of their nutritional needs over the course of a week Parents with the least amount of difficulty feeding their children have learned to adjust their focus away from the amount o what is eaten, and toward giving access to a wide range of healthy foods and letting children decide on what to eat from the selection given to them Just like adults, kids tend to eat more on some days and less on others Julie Webb-Keltepe, a Landstuhl Regional Medical Center speech and language therapist who specializes in brief treatment of children with feeding disorders, advises parents

“When introducing new foods, repeated exposure is necessary for the food to become a preferred taste,” Webb-Keltepe said “Try to not respond to refusal behaviors If the child is young, you may need to degrade the texture (solid to fork mashed or fork mashed to puree) to gain initial acceptance ”

The more distressed parents become that “he’s not eating,” the more distressed a child’s eating will become Parents should try not worry about his size or weight unless a doctor informs you that they are behind in their physical development

In an age where the food industry markets to children quite intentionally, knowing what to feed your child can also be overwhelming Children should be given fruits, vegetables and protein to try every day Snacks should be eaten one hour before bed, and not offered for those who “ate their dinner ” If you are going to do night time snacks or sweets, everyone should be given access to them If you reward eating dinner with sweets, you are fostering active dislike of the food presented at mealtime, and more intense attraction of having dessert

The more you restrict foods, and save unhealthy foods or sweets as a bribe, the

Food refusals, sensitive palates, distracted or hyperactive tendencies and dramatic reactions are commonly experienced by parents trying to establish healthy eating habits. Although most parents believe their child is a “picky eater,” in an eating culture that emphasizes abundant choices, many people can be labeled as “finicky” if scrutinized.

more likely the treat will be desired Always offer dessert, or one treat a day no matter what (meaning, it is not a bribe) and you control your choices Treats don’t have to be processed — they can be fruits, jam on bread, cheese cubes, steamed colorful veggies or a even a spoonful of honey

Children are new-food-phobic by nature Research shows a repeated less than 10 neutral exposures within a short time frame enhance acceptance of new foods The best thing a parent can do is to keep exposing their children to the same food over and over again After 10 times of trying a food and not liking it, is probably safe to say that your child does not truly “like” it Remember that talking about eating isn’t really fun, for the parent or for the child Don’t comment or try to explain to them how to eat better; modeling is more powerful Try not to comment on what or how much your kids are eating Be as neutral as possible Remember, you’ve done your job as a parent by giving access to the food, now let them learn to eat without needing your encouragement

Feeding children can feel like a battlefield

Here are a few tricks to prepare you better for potential “fights”

• 1) Have it your way: Kids want food choices and so do you, so limit choices to two within each food category (“Do you want juice or milk?” “Peas or carrots?)

Involve kids in these choices when making dinner, but make sure you don’t care about their selection: “Should we have pasta or pizza?” Kids should help decide one item at every meal, increasing the chances on them eating something

• 2) Just say no: Don’t become a shortorder cook Say “the kitchen closes at 7” and mean it People will always prefer a meal, hand tailored to their preferences over a family style selection If you always allow your child to eat something

he prefers later after the meal or as a separate meal from the family, he won’t learn how to accommodate other foods into his palate

• 3) Be a role model: If you’re constantly on a diet or have erratic eating habits, your children will grow up thinking that this sort of behavior is normal Be honest with yourself about the kinds of food messages you’re sending Trust your body to tell you when you’re hungry and when you’re full, and your kids will learn to do the same Eat what’s healthy If you don’t want your children eating something, don’t have it in the house as an option (or at least have it out of their sight)

• 4) Go with the flow: Children will be inconsistent So expect a hearty appetite one day and little the next, or hate a certain food and then love it Enjoy these surprises and don’t try to control their appetite

• 5) Trick or Treat: If you are going to use food as a reward, only use it for one non-eating related behavior: Potty training, after doing a chore, taking turns, getting ready for school If you start to give kids food for more than one specific behavior, they will ask for sweets more and more

• 6) Whining is going to happen: Whining peaks between age 3 and 4 It is a stage, just as learning to walk, read or going through puberty Expect it, keep your cool and learn to ignore it When kids whine about food, the best bet is for you to bite your tongue

At least at some point in a family’s life feeding children will be difficult However, as parents become more tolerant of their child’s negative reactions to the “food learning curve,” the more resilient a family’s eating habits become   Eating together is one of the most rewarding parts of a family’s culture
