Spangdahlem AB welcomes new leadership, reaffirms mission readiness

The 52nd Fighter Wing marked the formal transition of wing leadership from U.S. Air Force Col. Kevin Crofton to Col. William D. Lutmer during a change of command ceremony at Spangdahlem Air Base, June 30.

The ceremony, rooted in military tradition, united Airmen, regional partners, and military families in recognition of the outgoing commander’s legacy.

During his command, Crofton led more than 5,000 Airmen across nine geographically separated units in five countries, overseeing 6.9 billion dollars in protection-level assets and F-16 Fighting Falcons assigned to the 480th Fighter Squadron. His leadership was instrumental in driving strategic upgrades to the wing’s combat capabilities, responding to regional crises, and reinforcing NATO partnerships.

In his final remarks, Crofton expressed appreciation towards the Airmen, families and partners who shaped his tenure and supported the wing’s mission.

Additionally, Crofton took a moment to specifically recognize the vital role of the wing’s noncommissioned officers.

“Staff sergeants — you are the heartbeat of this organization,” said Crofton. “You have this ability to see and feel the beat of our Airmen in a way that no one else does.”

Following Crofton’s final remarks, the wing welcomed Lutmer with a formal and symbolic

exchange of the guidon, signifying the official transfer of command.

Lutmer most recently served as commander of the 31st Operations Group at Aviano Air Base, Italy, where he led eight squadrons supporting operations across three combatant commands.

As a command pilot with more than 2,600 flight hours in the F-16 Fighting Falcon, Lutmer has deployed in support of Operations

Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve. He has held key leadership roles across the Air Force, including weapons officer, fighter squadron commander, and Future Operations Division Chief at the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

Building on his operational ex-perience, Lutmer outlined his priorities for the wing under his leadership.

“We directly impact global events by our commitment to duty each and every day,” said Lutmer. “We develop teams, push boundaries and execute agile combat airpower while focusing on empowerment, relevance and mission.”

With new leadership in place, the 52nd FW remains postured to project airpower, integrate with allied forces, and execute its mission across the European theater.

THE HOUSING HYPE

PET OWNERSHIP

As a pet-friendly community, we value the companionship that animals bring to our homes. This article serves as a friendly reminder of important guidelines and best practices for responsible pet ownership within KMC. Ensuring responsible pet ownership helps create a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for all residents, both with and without pets.

Key pet ownership responsibilities:

• Registration and licensing: Please ensure your pet(s) are properly registered with the Base Veterinary Clinic and Housing Office as required by regulation. Up-to-date licenses and vaccinations are essential for the health and safety of your pet and the community.

• Leash laws and control: When outside your residence, all pets must be always kept on a leash and under your control. This is for the safety of your pet, other residents, and other animals. Leashes should be a reasonable length or retractable and used responsibly to prevent pets from approaching others without consent.

• Clean-Up after your pet: Cleaning-up after your pet is not only a courtesy to your neighbors, but also a requirement. Always carry waste bags and immediately clean up any feces left by your pet on lawns, sidewalks, common areas, or any other location. Properly dispose of waste in designated receptacles. Failure to do so can result in fines and other penalties.

• Barking and noise control: Excessive barking or other disruptive pet noises can be a nuisance to neighbors. Please take steps to manage your pet’s behavior and minimize noise disturbances, especially during early morning and late evening hours. Consider training, enrichment activities, or consulting with a veterinarian or animal behaviorist if you are having difficulty managing your pet’s noise levels.

• Pet waste disposal: Dispose of pet waste properly in designated pet waste stations or trash receptacles. Do not dispose of waste in storm drains or leave it in bags on the ground.

TAKE NOTE

ATTN: Those packing up, leaving the KMC

Many members wait too long to begin the household goods moving process, thereby causing additional stress and delays. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Personal Property Office advises movers to call them at +49-631-536-7727 three weeks before moving to begin the booking process.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz real property planning prepares for Army growth, modernization

Leaders, stakeholders and mission partners from across U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz, Installation Management Command-Europe, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, 68th Medical Command and the 86th Airlift Wing met June 24 to discuss the garrison’s future real property plans at the Fiscal Year 2025 Real Property Planning Board.

The RPPB acts as the garrison’s city planning council to guide the Directorate of Public Works as it develops and manages all the building and infrastructure projects for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s 26 geographically separated sites. The RPPB is the final approval authority for all real property actions the garrison undertakes, from future construction projects, renovations

and housing upgrades to energy investments, building site approvals and demolition.

“The Army is transforming now, which will change how we prioritize things here in (the European) theater,” said Maj. Gen. Ronald R. Ragin, 21st TSC commanding general. “We’ve got to stay flexible and look for opportunities for creative and joint solutions.”

The board will prioritize projects from the garrison’s Facility Investment Plan for FY 2027-2036 based on guidance from senior commanders at higher headquarters.

During the meeting, the team presented planned FIP projects so leaders have the data they need to make decisions. The list included deployment staging areas and equipment storage facilities to support the garrison’s power projection mission, housing and barracks renovations to improve quality of life for soldiers and

families, road and parking lot maintenance and projects to enable the mission of special operations forces units moving to Baumholder later this year.

The Federal government is operating under a continuing resolution, which means budgets are tight and resources are uncertain for ongoing projects, requiring out-ofthe-box solutions.

Despite funding cuts in FY 2025, the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz DPW team was able to fund critical SOF barracks projects through $54.5 million in European Deterrence Initiative funds, which are set aside to support the Army’s rotational forces in Europe, according to Travis Monson, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz DPW deputy director.

Monson said that the garrison also garnered more than $560,000 in Resilient Energy Funding for Readiness and Modernization funds that can be applied to housing improvements, quality of

POV Transfers in Germany

Do you desire to buy a new car and sell the old one? Maybe you are about to PCS from Germany and don’t want to take your current vehicle with you? Or maybe the vehicle has broken down and the cost for repairs are higher than what the car is worth? For whatever reason you decide to get rid of your car in Germany, you need to take a few things into account due to your SOFA status.

If you want to transfer a USAREUR-AF-plated vehicle to a person without SOFA status you generally need a “Permit to Transfer” (AEA Form 550-175B) due to its special tax status. This form is available at any U.S. Forces customs field office in Germany serving your garrison.

It is essential to get a “Permit to Transfer” (AEA Form 550-175B) before you sell, donate or transfer a car in any other way to a German car dealer, junkyard or any person who is not privileged under NATO SOFA. Please note: This applies even if the

vehicle was in an accident, and you did not receive any money for it! Without such a permit processed through U.S. and German customs you will eventually be unable to clear vehicle registration when it is time to PCS. Another issue you may face is customs authorities requiring you to prove the disposition of the vehicle, which may be very difficult if the car was scrapped or sold without following proper procedures. With the lack of documents and proof of Customs clearance, you may be identified in a Law Enforcement Report and could face disciplinary action.

Civil Air Patrol European Encampment, 86 AW fortify relationships within KMC

Additionally, you could even face a hefty tax demand, and possible fines from German customs authorities.

AEA Regulation 550-175 requires you to accompany the non-SOFA status recipient when customs-clearing the vehicle. This is also in your own best interest: While the person taking ownership of your car is obliged to clear German customs, be aware that by law, you can be held liable to pay the German taxes and duties in the case of the buyer failing to do so. To make things easier, you may want to refer them to the online guidance available in English and German on

the US Forces Customs webpage (see QR code) to help with the procedure. For more information on how to properly sell or transfer your car or other personal property in Germany the resources are available online, in AEA Regulation 550-175, or by visiting your local U.S. Forces customs field office in Germany.

The 86th Airlift Wing hosted the annual Civil Air Patrol European Encampment, where members were able to explore and learn about various aeronautics career fields, at Ramstein Air Base, June 20-29.

The European Encampment has seven squadrons in total, with four being located in Germany. Since Ramstein AB is a uniquely centralized location, it has the opportunity to support the CAP organization in building trust between Airmen and their families, while simultaneously supporting the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

“By supporting each other, we

were able to use base assets and give back by teaching the youth of the KMC about leadership and character development,”said CAP/ Lt. Col. Kaycee Livesay, encampment commander. “It gives them a taste of science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers within the U.S. Air Force and hopefully builds future aviators.”

A total of 75 student cadets experienced a day in the life of firefighters, maintenance personnel, security forces, air traffic controllers and other aeronautics career fields. The organization fosters a community for military children to share and strive for future aspirations together, like these two students who wish to join the U.S. Air Force as pilots.

“Civil Air Patrol has helped stretch and pull me in ways that I

wouldn’t have by myself,” said CAP C/1st Lt. Kairi Hall, she has been with the organization for five years. “We have been learning about the physics of flight and taking leadership classes. My favorite part has been the air traffic control tower because it’s the closest we’ve gotten to the planes.”

CAP C/Staff Sgt. Samuel Springer added that the organization has helped him build positive studying habits, keeping him focused in his personal life and for his future commitment in going the officer route.

The encampment not only reinforced the 86th AW commitment to community, but established a further understanding of the 86th AW mission to the youths of the KMC.

Public Health Command Europe welcomes new commander

Public Health Command Europe held a Change of Command ceremony June 27 as the command’s outgoing commander, Col. Paul Lang, relinquished his command to Col. Anastasia McKay.

The ceremony officially passed PHCE leadership to McKay, who most recently served as the Command Surgeon for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command through June 2025.

This will be McKay’s second command position.

“Our mission directly impacts, readiness, resilience, and the health of our force across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East,” McKay said. “I am proud to join our team.”

A change of command is a longheld military tradition. The ceremony is a symbolic passing of responsibility, authority and accountability from one commanding officer to another and is often the first time the unit sees the new commander and the last time they see the outgoing commander. The ceremony ensures Soldiers are never left with-

out official guidance and it signifies the allegiance of Soldiers to their commander.

The outgoing commander reflected on his time in command of PHCE.

“Public Health Command has consistently risen to the occasion, we have enhanced the readiness across the theater, ensuring our forces are healthy and prepared to answer the

call,” Lang said. “The past few years have demanded much but yielded event greater achievements.”

Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, Medical Readiness Command, Europe commanding general and U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command Surgeon, hosted the ceremony.

During his remarks, Giraud acknowledged Lang’s service and

dedication to the organization, as well as his wife and family’s support for the Army family.

Lang is departing PHCE to assume the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for Force Health Protection at U.S. Army Medical Command.

Public Health Command Europe is made up of more than 400

Soldiers and civilians stationed in six countries, and reached its initial operating capability Oct. 1, 2010, combining the assets of the legacy U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive MedicineEurope and European Regional Veterinary Command.

Public Health Command Europe provides integrated, comprehensive, and global veterinary and preventive medicine support, that includes: occupational and environmental medicine, laboratory services, veterinary services, health promotion and wellness, environmental health and engineering, occupational health services, and epidemiology and disease surveillance. This support is provided for garrisons, training areas, and contingency and combat forces operating in United States European Command, United States Africa Command, and United States Central Command. The range of support routinely spans throughout 40 countries in a given year.

ABC IN KMC: Basket full of summer

Summer is here! A wonderful time for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying nature. A cool walk through the forest may lead you past raspberries, blackberries or blueberries. Markets are full of fresh fruit with juicy red strawberries, shiny bright cherries, dazzling green and red apples, bright yellow pears or fuzzy orange peaches and apricots. Gardens overflow with red and black currents, ripe red tomatoes and homegrown cucumbers, zucchini and rhubarb with a reddish hue.

Just imagining a basket full of these vitamin bombs, and what you can do with them, is sure to let your mouth water!

So, for strawberry (or cherry) pickin’ sake: Grab a bucket, a pocket full of Euro coins, and get out there with family and friends to savor the goodies of the season and pick the fruits yourself! There are several options within a 30 km radius of Kaiserslautern, where you can “pick-your-own” strawberries, cherries and even flowers.

Strawberries, such as at Erdbeerland near Eisenberg/Pfalz. Bring your own basket or buy one on-site, there is free parking and signs posted when coming off A6. Further sites are near Kaiserslautern East, one close to Rodenbach and one near Landstuhl, just follow the “Erdbeeren” signs. Some of these booths also sell fresh raspberries and blueberries.

Cherries can be found at Obsthof Michl near Hirschhorn, and Kirschplantage am Diensberg near Winnweiler. It’s always best to bring your own container and a bit of cash to pay for the goods. Apples are ready to be picked at Appel Happel near Mainz.

Flower lovers can also experience the best time of the year, such as strolling through the lavender fields in full bloom around mid-June to July at Lavendelhof Wenz near Weilerbach.

Blumenpfückgarten Bender is also near Weilerbach and offers an array of flowers from sunflowers, zinnias and gladiolas to other colorful summer flora.

Sonnenblumenfeld RamsteinMiesenbach has widespread sunflower fields and more.

Watch for signs and posters with “Erdbeeren, Blumen zum Selbstpflücken” along the roadside to discover further opportunities.

The German concept of “Hofladen” has also become rather popular in recent years.

These small shops, often linked to agricultural estates, offer homemade goods from fruits, vegetables, honey, jams and jellies, oils

and vinegar, pasta, regional eggs, cheese, and more.

One example is Freudenberger Hof near Zweibrücken, a familyowned business in the seventh generation. It offers strawberries, apples, cherries, red and black currents, and plums that can also be self-picked. Its Hofladen offers a wide selection of farm-made items. “Haus der Nachhaltigkeit” near Trippstadt also operates a Hofladen with a similar selection. Keep a lookout for “Hofladen” road signs, often leading you to cozy and picturesque farmhouses and further discoveries.

Now that your basket is full of regional produce, it’s time to treat yourself to a few goodies. Fresh strawberries with a dash of whipped cream are delicious, but why not give it a try at jelly or jam? Or, how about making your own ice cream with fresh fruit!

Easy recipes can be found on the internet.

German (summer) cakes are always a delicious afternoon snack. Here are two simple classic recipes you might want to try out:

German Kirschstreusel (Cherry crumble cake)

A tender, buttery cake base crowned with tart cherries and a crunchy streusel. Perfect for “Kaffee und Kuchen!”

Serves: 10–12 Prep time: 15 min Bake time: 35–40 min

Ingredients: 4 large eggs – 1¾ cups (350 g) granulated sugar –1⅓ cups (160 g) all-purpose flour – 1 tsp baking powder – ¼ tsp salt – 12 oz (350 g) pitted cherries (fresh or thawed frozen Morello) –½ lb (225 g) unsalted butter, cold, cut into cubes – 2⅓ cups (280 g) all-purpose flour – (optional) powdered sugar for dusting.

Preheat your oven to 350 °F (175 °C). Line a 9×13” baking pan with parchment paper or grease it lightly.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Gradually add 1⅓ cups flour, baking powder, and salt; mix just until smooth.

Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Scatter the pitted cherries over the top, pressing them slightly.

Make the streusel: in a separate bowl, combine the cold butter cubes, 2⅓ cups flour, and a handful of sugar. Use your fingers, a pastry cutter, or a food processor

to work the butter into the flour until large crumbs form. Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the cherries. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into cake (not streusel) comes out clean. Let cool at least 15 minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.

German Erdbeerbärmscher (Strawberry Cake)

A classic light sponge base topped with fresh strawberries and a shiny red glaze, without baking. Perfect for summer “coffee and cake”!

Serves: 10–12, Prep time: 20 min + chill time: 15–30 min

Ingredients: 150 g sugar, 1 Tsp vanilla sugar or 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 “Tortenboden” (finished bottom, available at any supermarket), 200 ml water or red fruit juice (for the glaze) +1 package “Tortenguss” (e.g. Dr. Oetker), 500 g fresh strawberries, washed and cut into slices/pieces. Instructions: Carefully place strawberries (or other fruit) onto the cake bottom. Heat glaze as instructed, slightly let it cool and then gently pour it over the fruits. Let the cake cool down for at least 15 – 20 minutes and then serve with a dash of whipped or ice cream.

Enjoy your cake with a good cup of coffee or tea, and make sure to decorate your table with your self-picked flowers too.

Guten Appetit!

US, Sweden partner for CSAR training

Story and photo by Sgt. Brooke Rogers

Fighter Wing Public Affairs

In the challenging terrain of northern Sweden, the 57th Rescue Squadron based out of Aviano, Italy, and Swedish air force rangers based out of Ronneby, Sweden, collaborated to accomplish high-stakes personnel recovery training from March 30 through June 14. What began as planned participation in the Arctic Challenge Exercise transformed into a focused bilateral mission in one of Europe’s most strategically vital regions.

“This exercise focuses on traditional personnel recovery—retrieving simulated downed pilots or isolated personnel from contested areas and safely reintegrating them into friendly forces,” explained U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Drew Guerra, 57th RQS Tactical Air Control Party joint terminal attack controller.

The 57th RQS sent a small, specialized team composed of TACP, intelligence, communications and survival, evasion, resistance and escape specialists to integrate with the Swedish air force rangers. Together, they executed live, full-mission profiles to develop and test tactics, techniques and procedures for the ever-evolving battlefield in Unmanned Aircraft Systems, counter-UAS and infiltration methods for traditional and non-traditional personnel recovery.

CROSSWORD

“We like to have [the 57th RQS] join us on as many occasions as possible, and vice versa,” said Master Sgt. Rasmus Antonsson, Swedish air force ranger troop chief. “We aim to train and compete with the best, and to us, that is the U.S. Air Force.”

The unforgiving northern terrain of swamps, hills and dense woods presents unique operational challenges. Helicopter teams must adapt to limited landing zones while ground crews navigate harsh conditions to move patients swiftly and safely.

For the 57th RQS, this environment is unfamiliar and the experience is invaluable. Training in Sweden offers critical exposure to the operational demands of northern Europe and deepens integration with Swedish partners.

“We have a great history of integration with Sweden and are always grateful for the opportunity to work with our northern allies,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Matthew Doyle, 57th RQS SERE specialist. “Their constant professionalism and willingness to exchange

lessons learned is a testament to our seamless partnership.”

Located near the Arctic Circle, northern Sweden offers a critical staging ground for allied operations. In the event of conflict, pre-positioned aircraft and recovery forces in the region could launch missions across the Baltic Sea faster and with greater cohesion. Thanks to this training, U.S. and Swedish teams are laying the groundwork for an integrated, ready and resilient task force in the High North.

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 57th Rescue Squadron based out of Aviano Air Base, Italy, and Swedish air force rangers assigned to the 17th Wing based out of Ronneby, Sweden, load onto an NH-90 helicopter during bilateral training at Kallax Air Base, Sweden, June 11. The team was flown to a mock crash site where they located and rescued a simulated downed pilot.

Army entomologist hits mark during Interservice Rifle Match on Quantico

A U.S. Army entomologist took third place in the Excellence in Competition match at the 64th Annual Inter-service Rifle Championship at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, June 6 – 10, and earned the U.S. Army Silver EIC Rifle badge.

Maj. Paul A. Lenhart, an entomologist with the 1st Global Field Medical Laboratory and the chief of Vector Control and Countermeasures at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, competed against 49 participants from the Army, Navy and Marine rifle teams.

Shooters from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Service Rifle Team, U.S. Marine Corps Shooting Team, U.S. Navy Marksmanship team and individual shooters from the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force participated in the competition.

“I prepared for this match through a regular schedule of training that includes dry-fire position practice at home, live-fire practice at a public range and local club rifle matches. I also recently competed in the 2025 Atlantic Fleet and All Navy East Rifle Match as an ’other service’ competitor and earned silver in the rifle aggregate,” said Lenhart.

“High-power service rifle competitions do not require qualifications to attend a match,” he said. “What is unique about these matches, including the national matches, is you have Olympic-level shooting athletes next to shooters brand new to the sport.”

Lenhart began shooting rifles competitively in 2017 with the Civilian Marksmanship Program and became a more serious high-power rifle competitor with his first attendance at the National Trophy Rifle Matches in 2021.

“I like competing in service rifle because it limits the ’gear race’ but I do make sure my rifle is in top performing condition, and I reload my own match grade ammunition,” he said. “You must have confidence in your equipment so that you as the shooter are the limiting factor.”

From his performance at the Interservice Rifle Match and All Navy Match, Lenhart was awarded the U.S. Army Excellence in Competition Rifle Badge (Silver) by the Civilian Marksmanship Program and U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit.

He is currently training for the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s 2025 National Trophy Rifle Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, in July.

“My goal is to earn enough Excellence in Competition points to be awarded the Distinguished Rifleman Badge and hopefully attain the highly coveted President’s Hundred Tab from the President’s Match,” said Lenhart. “The second goal is exceptionally difficult because you compete against all shooters to be in the top 100. That includes shooters who have previously earned the tab: highly skilled civilians, veterans, professional military competition shooters and everything in between.”

Lenhart said the highlight of the

Interservice Rifle Match was spending time with other top military service rifle shooters in the country, especially members from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Service Rifle Team.

“They train for competition full-time, and their abilities are next level,” said Lenhart. “I shot beside multiple national championship winners. Despite being star shooters, they are happy to provide advice and tips for developing shooters like me to improve.”

Lenhart learned to shoot rifles while growing up in El Paso, Texas.

“The key to my success in the competition was my passion for marksmanship that my father instilled in me. Growing up, he would take me rifle shooting in desert canyons and trained me on the fundamentals,” said Lenhart. “The second key thing has been developing my resilience. This sport takes a lot of grit and mental toughness. In slow fire stages, you fight a constant battle in your mind and only recently have I improved my mental game.”

Lenhart said high-power service rifle shooting is a great sport for service members. He recommended that prospective Army shooters review AR 350-66 and the CMP Competition Rulebooks.

“While this sport is based on traditional military service rifle shooting, dating back to 1903 and President Theodore Roosevelt, the fundamentals you learn can be applied to all kinds of shooting, even modern combat shooting,” said Lenhart. “For anyone looking to join I would either attend an introductory match like the CMP’s Small Arms Firing Schools or contact a local civilian club. The high-power community is very helpful, and they often have loaner equipment to get you started.”

Like all Soldiers, Medical Service Officers have to be able to shoot, move and communicate with the maneuver units they support on the battlefield.

“Medical Service Corps officers are valued for our unique medical subject matter expertise, but we need to be competent Soldiers to stay in the fight and conserve the fighting strength. We maintain proficiency with our assigned weapons – so we

are ready to defend our unit when in harm’s way,” said Lenhart. “I relish how the Army constantly pushes us to improve our skills and be well rounded leaders.”

One of around 60 active-duty entomologists in the Army, Lenhart serves as the entomologist in the Occupational and Environmental Health Section of the 1st Global Field Medical Laboratory and the chief of Vector Control and Countermeasures in the Entomology Branch at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

The Army Reserve has a sizeable number of entomologists.

The Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland-headquartered 1st Global Field Medical Laboratory performs surveillance, laboratory testing and health hazard assessments of environmental, occupational, endemic disease and CBRNE threats to support force protection and counter Weapons of Mass Destruction missions.

The 1st Global Field Medical Laboratory is part of the 44th Medical Brigade and 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Command, the U.S. military’s premier multifunctional and deployable CBRNE formation. Soldiers and Army civilians from the 20th CBRNE Command deploy from 19 bases in 16 states to confront and defeat the world’s most dangerous hazards in support of joint, interagency and multinational operations.

The Walter Reid Army Institute of Research is the largest biomedical research facility in the U.S. Department of Defense.

Lenhart graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a bachelor’s degree in biology and from Texas A & M University with a Ph.D. in entomology. He has served in the U.S. Army for 7 years.

“As an entomologist, it is my responsibility to defend our Soldiers from environmental threats, chiefly vector-borne diseases,” said Lenhart. “This includes everything from mosquitos transmitting malaria parasites or dengue virus to filth flies transmitting diarrheal pathogens.”

Lenhart said that vector-borne diseases have repeatedly taken more combatants out

of the fight than battle injuries in armed conflict.

During his most memorable assignment, he was involved in a rapid response mission to a cluster of flea-borne spotted cases on an Army post where he led a team of medical providers, pest managers and public health officials to help a military family and prevent further cases.

“While I was excited to collect and identify the vectors, this mission put the human suffering caused by vector-borne disease right in front of my eyes.”

His team recently published a case report for this public health response in the journal Military Medicine (Stidham et al. 2025).

At the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Lenhart studies and develops new techniques and countermeasures for controlling vectors during military operations.

“My work at WRAIR allows me to maintain high subject matter expertise, so when I train or deploy with the 1st GFML, I can provide exceptional entomological support in a theater of operations anywhere in the world,” said Lenhart. “I can then safeguard the force by advising commanders on the medical threats their Soldiers will face, conducting bio-surveillance to better characterize medical threats and spearheading pest management strategies and other countermeasures to fight back against disease vectors.”

Lenhart has always been interested in shooting rifles and collecting bugs. Today, as a warfighter and entomologist, he uses his knowledge about guns and bugs to protect the force.

“I was always a bug nerd, and my first memories are collecting insects. I think most kids are interested in insects, but someone tells them they are gross, and they stop. I was lucky my parents fostered my love for insects and science,” said Lenhart. “I have maintained a large personal insect collection my whole life that continues to grow and survive PCS moves. Last time I estimated it was over 30,000 specimens preserved on pins or in vials. I regularly use it for research and outreach.”
