USAG Rheinland-Pfalz teen represents military youth at the Pentagon

My journey as a youth advocate took a major step forward when I was selected to represent the U.S. Army at the Joint Service Teen Council in Washington, D.C. This was the first time since 2014 that the JSTC convened, bringing together teens and staff from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Army National Guard to address real challenges facing military youth worldwide.

As a twoyear member of the Installation Management Command Army Teen Panel, a yearlong program that identifies issues affecting teens in Army communities and presents solutions directly to leadership, I came prepared.

The ATP gave me a strong foundation for the JSTC because we had already started identifying key concerns and building out solutions before arriving.

The three issues we prioritized and presented to the Pentagon were:

1. Accessibility and availability –Many teens either don’t have access to Youth Centers or the centers they do have are understaffed and underresourced.

2. Funding restrictions – Teen programs aren’t allowed to fundraise, which limits opportunities for things like cultural trips and leadership conferences.

3. Lack of life skills training –Teens feel unprepared for adulthood in areas like financial literacy, taxes or even writing a resume.

I worked on the life skills team and helped build our recommendations using a mix of data, personal experiences and ideas from teens across Army communities. I also designed the final presentation deck and collaborated with other teen groups to make sure our message came through clearly and professionally.

We also had time to explore some of D.C.’s history, visiting monuments, the aerospace museum and attending the Twilight Tattoo at Fort Myer. One of the most humbling moments was participating in a wreathlaying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, where four of our members helped lay a wreath at the tomb.

On briefing day, we toured

the Pentagon and presented our recommendations to senior military leadership, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Stephen Simmons. I ran the slides and helped answer questions throughout the session. We even received a standing ovation and challenge coins from Mr. Simmons. Even better, we found out the fundraising issue is already being worked on!

We wrapped up the trip by catching a Washington Nationals vs. Chicago Cubs baseball game, which was the perfect way to end a full and successful week.

My trip to the Pentagon and Washington D.C. was unforgettable. It reminded me that our voices matter, and when we work together, whether in small groups or big teams, we can create real

Aviation meets medicine: A flight surgeon’s lifelong journey

FALLS CHURCH, VA. — The sky was never the limit for Col. Christopher Borchardt, it was a lifetime calling.

enous communities. “My uncles and great uncle who flew seaplanes in Metlakatla, Alaska, they were combining medicine and flying … and would do missionary flights in South America,” Borchardt said.

His early fascination with aviation would eventually merge with another deeply rooted calling in medicine — a path set forth by generations of physicians in his family.

Before donning the uniform as a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, Borchardt was a kid who marveled for hours at airplanes passing overhead, read every book on aviation he could find, and would jump at the opportunity to tour an aircraft’s cockpit. He later earned his pilot’s license from a smalltown airport near his childhood home in Michigan where he jokingly said he would “beg, borrow, and steal” for any chance to fly.

still running,” he recalled. He was stationed alongside Army personnel and remembers the gravity of the planning sessions. “They’re throwing down these enormous maps, and they’re saying, ‘If you get blown up here, you’ve got six minutes to live.’ It always started like that. ‘You blow up here, you’ve got X minutes to live.’”

In Tikrit, he served as the region’s only critical care transport provider. “If they’re going to make it, it’s because I’m going to get my act together,” he said.

“By the time I went to medical school, there were 23 family members who had all graduated from Loma Linda University, Southern California [for medicine],” Borchardt said. “The family kind of just expected that.”

The beginning of a flight career

Borchardt credited the Army medics’ confidence in the Expeditionary Medical Support unit with pushing him to go above and beyond.

“I was an aviation enthusiast throughout my entire life,” Borchardt said. “I was studying aircraft schematics. I had books about fighters and everything … all these technical details about the aircraft that even a lot of pilots don’t even need to know. That was something I enjoyed.”

He grew up inspired by relatives who shared his passion for aviation. One great uncle served in the Indian Health Service as a pilot physician, flying to remote areas and providing care for indig

Borchardt commissioned into the Air Force in 1992 as a lieutenant and was selected for the Health Professions Scholarship Program. Eventually, his deployments as a flight surgeon took him to Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, where he supported joint medical operations and oversaw aeromedical evacuations.

In 2006, he deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq, on short notice. “There’s only one flight a week, and the character I was replacing left on the plane I came in on with the engines

“The Army was so confident that if they made it to the EMEDS, they would live,” he said. “That forced us to be better, smarter, more dedicated in a way that you can’t just muster yourself.”

Human Systems Integration and mishap response

Borchardt later transitioned from clinical operations to human systems integration, an area focused on how aircrew interact with technology and cockpit environments.

In what was the Air Force’s costliest mishap of its time, Borchardt was assigned to the Accident

Investigation Board for the 2008 B2 Spirit stealth bomber crash at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.

“It was a fascinating opportunity and challenging puzzle to solve for an aviation enthusiast like me,” he said. “Because of my background with flybywire aircraft, I was able to identify the technical issue with the plane simply by watching a video of the incident before we had any aircraft data recordings.”

His unique blend of aviation knowledge and medical training enabled him to analyze aircraft

video footage and pinpoint a sensor issue that contributed to the crash.

This systemslevel understanding has helped him identify physiological and operational factors that eventually led to improved safety measures. Few are qualified to occupy this niche intersection of medicine and aviation, one that Borchardt has made his own.

Advancing Human Systems and aviation safety

Borchardt serves as the medical director and inspector for the Air Force Inspection Agency, coordinating with senior leaders to maintain safety policies and standards across 76 Air Force hospitals and clinics. Previously, he served as the Human Systems Integration Advisor at both Headquarters Air Combat Command and Air Force Special Operations Command, where he optimized warfighter performance and drove safety innovation across the commands.

He has worked closely with the Air Force Research Laboratory and Naval Medical Research UnitDayton while assigned to the 711th Human Performance Wing to address physiological episodes in military aircraft — complex

health events that arise from the interaction between aircrew and life support systems.

“The key is to focus on understanding and adapting to the new benefits and unforeseen limitations of the newest lifesupport systems to avoid physiologic challenges,” Borchardt said.

In a role that blends medicine, engineering, and operational insight, Borchardt emphasized integrating human factors early in aircraft development and acquisition.

“These differences [can] contribute to physiologic events in ways not predicted; and therefore, such modifications should be substantially tested early in the standards development and acquisitions process.”

His leadership philosophy centers on prevention through design: Identifying risks to aircrew performance before they manifest and building smarter, safer systems for tomorrow’s warfighters.

From caring for wounded warfighters to ensuring aviation safety for Air Force pilots, his work has exemplified the Air Force Medical Service’s commitment to innovation, integrity, and excellence in all we do.

ABC IN KMC: Independence Day

Many of us are celebrating 250 years of freedom, independence and democracy on this weekend. Some may be visiting the Freedom Fest at Ramstein or festivities at other installations. Others may use the long weekend for a getaway to venture out to one of Europe’s idyllic places, and some may just enjoy the long weekend with family and friends.

In celebration of the occasion, let us reflect upon which events led to the struggle for freedom and the people from our region here who also supported the cause. After the French and Indian War, Britain faced a massive debt and sought to compensate costs through a variety of taxes and revenue measures — the Stamp Act, the Townshend Acts, and later the Tea Act.

The measures weren’t only of financial nature but struck at the heart of colonial autonomy. Until then, colonists enjoyed a measure of selfgovernance and found these taxes unfairly levied without any direct representation in Parliament. Tension escalated with defiant acts of resistance like the Boston Tea Party when Britain then retaliated with the Coercive Acts, which restricted colonial freedoms and eventually set the stage for armed conflict.

Quest for Independence

The Battles of Lexington and Concord in April 1775 symbol

ized a definitive break with British authority and the infringement of selfrule ignited the spark of the American War for Independence.

A group of brilliant minds, united by a passion for liberty, began drafting the Declaration of Independence with Thomas Jefferson in the lead, while John Adams tirelessly lobbied for independence and Benjamin Franklin’s diplomatic verbiage was instrumental in shaping the final document. Their contributions provided the ideological underpinning that justified separation from Britain, finally creating a new nation.

The fight for American freedom also attracted a diverse group of supporters. Many German immigrants — especially those settled in Pennsylvania and upstate New York — joined the patriot cause, driven by their own aspirations for social and political renewal. Other European and Irish immigrants, too, played a vital role. With a long history of struggle against oppression back home, Irish volunteers and state militia fighters supported the Continental Army. In addition, the revolutionary banner was endorsed by figures such as the French Marquis de Lafayette, the Polish nobleman Casimir Pulaski, and the Prussian military expert Baron von Steuben — all of whom brought invaluable military expertise and international solidarity to the cause.

The Battle of Saratoga in October 1777 was a turning point

in the war where American forces defeated the British and also convinced France to formally ally with the American cause by providing military support. The Battle of Monmouth in June 1778 then showcased the discipline of the Continental Army under General George Washington.

Yorktown meets Royal Deux-Ponts Count Christian IV of Zweibrücken was very Francophile and engaged in close ties with the French court. When King Louis XV needed troops, Christian readily stepped in and recruited soldiers in Homburg, parts of the Palatinate and the Alsace. Today’s KMC was in the Duchy of PalatinateZweibrücken at that time. Christian quickly activated the Royal DeuxPonts Regiment in 1757, and it is noted that Benjamin Franklin personally travelled to Paris after declaring independence, soliciting military support. French troops were sent overseas, and one of them was the Royal DeuxPonts Regiment from Zweibrücken that set sail in 1780. Little did the Palatines know that they were headed to the “new world” as they were told that they would fight against British soldiers (believing they were heading to Britain). Once at sea they quickly realized that they were on a longer voyage and would eventually play a pivotal role in the quest for freedom. Surprisingly, they also found themselves fighting against

other Germans from Hesse, who had been commissioned by the British Crown. Christian IV’s son Christian von Forbach was appointed as regiment commander, while his brother Wilhelm von Forbach was charged as brigade commander.

Turn of the tide

After years of battle and the colonies on the verge of defeat, Cornwallis’ troops outnumbered the joint American and French Army by far and had entrenched themselves in Yorktown. They tried to force the city to declare defeat. The turn of the tide occurred Oct. 14, 1781, when Wilhelm von Forbach managed to break through their lines with his brigade at “Redoute 9” near Yorktown and consequently contributed to the British troops having to capitulate five days later Oct. 19.

The regiment played a decisive role with only 29 casualties in the turning point of the thirteen colonies eventually gaining independence only two years later. Christian and Wilhelm von Forbach were personally honored by America’s first president George Washington and the majority of soldiers returned to their homes two years later in 1783. Some of them decided to stay and their legacy lives on with typical German last names, such as Müller (Miller), Schmidt (Smith), Schneider, Wagner, Becker, Hoffmann, Klein, Bauer, and Weber. A painting by

John Trumbull of Christian and Wilhelm von Forbach together with George Washington hangs at the capital in Washington D.C. Yorktown is the sister city of Zweibrücken, just around the corner from the KMC, and delegates that come for official visits never fail to underline this important achievement. America’s independence inspired others to claim freedom and the Royal DeuxPonts regiment later also fought during the French Revolution after the Storm of the Bastille in Paris in 1789. In addition, a group of German settlers of over 200,000 soldiers for the Union played a decisive role in the Civil War almost a century later.

This year is widely recognized as the 250th anniversary of the outbreak of the war that set America on its path to selfrule. The anniversary serves as a reminder of both the sacrifices made on the battlegrounds and the enduring legacy of fighting for the rights that now form the backbone of American democracy. It also demonstrates the resilience of the American people and the strategic importance of international alliances.

An array of events is scheduled throughout the year in commemoration to honor the achievements of those who fought for independence but also serve as a reminder of the enduring values of freedom and speech that continue to inspire generations today.

Happy Independence Day!

This year’s event held special significance, marking the 21st TSC’s 60th anniversary and the upcoming 250th birthday of the U.S. Army. The occasion served both as a moraleboosting celebration and a tribute to the Soldiers, families, and civilians who support the command’s enduring mission.

Col. Todd Allison, deputy commander of the 21st TSC, addressed Soldiers and families at the opening ceremony, recognizing the dual milestones and expressing the pride of Maj. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commanding general, and Command Sgt. Maj. Denice Malave, the unit’s senior enlisted advisor.

“Our operational tempo is intense, stretching from Norway to Greece and across Africa,” Allison said. “Today is a chance to step back and recognize the people who make that possible. A shout out to the families who stand by their Soldiers and enable them to do what they do. We couldn’t do it without you.”

The competition kicked off with a morning football tournament featuring the 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st TSC, 16th Sustainment Brigade, and 30th Medical Brigade. After a series of preliminary matches, including participation from Army National Guard units, the 30th Medical Brigade defeated the 21st TSC in the championship game.

At the close of the tournament, the 30th Medical Brigade was awarded the 2025 Commander’s Cup. The 16th Sustainment

Brigade earned runnerup honors for their “outstanding effort and hardearned finish.”

In line with tradition, the command also sealed its 2025 time capsule, marking the culmination of a legacy effort that began in 2024. Scheduled to be opened on June 14, 2035, the capsule honors the resilience and contributions of 21st TSC Soldiers, families, and the broader community.

Each participating unit added symbolic items reflecting their achievements: 7th Mission Support Command contributed a partnership flag and a pride pin. 16th Sustainment Brigade submitted a brigade coin, and LSA Eagle badges from the command team. 18th Military Police Brigade added a regimental coin, honoring their garrison mission. The 30th Medical Brigade

included a unit of whole blood to commemorate their 500unit delivery and the setup of a field hospital during Defender 25, a lifesaving contribution to warfighter survivability.

Support Operations added a beer opener and large Euro coins, nodding to daily life and shared experiences in Germany.

The 21st TSC command team provided a deployment brief outlining priorities (people, mission, and families), along with a twostar banking note thanking personnel for their theaterwide impact, from Norway to Morocco, and in support of Ukraine.

The time capsule box, designed by Mr. Gene Warren and Will Lester, was recog

nized as a “firstclass job” by command leadership.

The celebration concluded with a cakecutting ceremony, a longstanding military tradition symbolizing the organization’s history and future. Maj. Gen. Ragin and Command Sgt. Maj. Malave, representing the unit’s senior leadership, were joined by Pfc. Jerrod Adams, the most junior Soldier present at the event, made a symbolic gesture of continuity and growth.

In her closing remarks, Malave thanked participants for stepping away from their demanding mission sets to enjoy time with their families.

“This is just a small token of appreciation for everything you and your families do for the 21st TSC,” Malave said. “We are not successful without every one of you.”

GACO CORNER: WHO WOULD WANT TO THINK ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE

Long-term care insurance in Germany

You have left the U.S. military; you are staying in Germany with your family, and you, and your family members are in good health. How nice! Certainly, you’ve taken care of your financial provisions, and your health insurance will pay for most of your treatments.

You are still young, and you do not want to waste a thought about what might happen many years from now or, with bad luck, in the near future.

The team at the GermanAmerican Community Office in Kaiserslautern fre

CROSSWORD

quently receives requests for support from people whose American spouses have become a longterm patient due to an illness, a surgery or an accident.

Time flies by so quickly! Please take your time and check exactly what your American health insurance will cover and whether it pays for longterm care insurance. Care in a nursing home can cost you several thousand euros a month, depending on your state of health, the amount of care required and the amount your longterm care insurance will pay.

Please consider getting special insurance that will help pay the expenses for

care in a nursing home to help avoid financial burden on your loved ones.

Longterm care is a rather complex matter and cannot easily be explained. The earlier you get longterm care insurance, the less expensive it will be. However, if you get German longterm care insurance after retiring from the military after decades of service you still may have to pay a considerable amount each month. In the long run, this is better than paying thousands of Euros to the nursing home every month.

This link provides you with more information:

The better you are prepared for a case of longterm caretaking in your family, the less burdensome it gets financially.

ACTION/HORROR/SCI-FI/CYBER

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous rampage, its creator, Gemma, has become an advocate for government oversight of AI. Unbeknownst to her, a defense contractor has created a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate infiltration spy. However, as Emlia’s self-awareness increases, it becomes less interested in taking orders. Hoping to stop Emilia, Gemma decides to resurrect M3GAN, making it faster, stronger, and more lethal.

How to Train Your Dragon (2025)

On the rugged isle of Berk, a Viking boy named Hiccup defies centuries of tradition by befriending a dragon named Toothless. 1. FREINSHEIM

Freinsheim is a smaller town in the Bad Durkheim region of Germany. It’s one of those quaint wine villages that we stumbled on one day. We liked it so much we started looking for events that would bring us back. We have visited the town a couple of times just to wander through the streets and browse the shops. Recently we were there for their Blütenfest to kick off spring and enjoy some wine.

Other things to do in Freinsheim:

Toy Museum:  We haven’t been to this (because we no longer have kids at home), but I can see where young kids would enjoy this.

Other events

Stadtmauerfest: The Town Wall Festival held on the third

2. TRIER

Unless you are new to the area, you’ve probably been to Trier or at least know about it. Trier is Germany’s oldest city and is a great place to spend the day. They have a downtown area much like Kaiserslautern with plenty of shopping and restaurants. Trier offers a little bit of everything from Roman Baths to craft shopping. Even though it is technically a day trip, you might have to make it more than once since there are so many things to do!

Things to do in Trier

Porta Nigra: The largest Roman city gate north of the Alps. Designated as part of the Roman Monuments and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3. HEIDELBERG

Heidelberg is the first place I heard about from my parents when we learned we would be moving to Germany. It’s the first city they visited back in the sixties when my dad was stationed here during the Vietnam Era. It was also the very first trip we took after arriving and unpacking. Heidelberg is situated on the Neckar River and is a very popular tourist destination.

Things to do in Heidelberg

Schloss Heidelberg:  A truly impressive castle overlooking the equally impressive town along the river. We were last there in the fall to visit the castle along with the world’s largest wine barrel and the German Pharmacy Museum. Philosophenweg (Philosophers’ Way): This is a path located

4. BERNKASTEL-KUES

BernkastelKues is a wellknown winegrowing center on the Mosel River. The town sits in the valley along the river overlooked by vineyards and a castle. We’ve been there every fall for their Wine Festival that ends with fireworks over the castle. The downtown area is a medieval market place zone strictly for pedestrians. Some of the houses, dating as far back as the 15th century, are a little crooked yet have stood the test of time while others are a bit more spacious. There are plenty of little stores, pubs and cafes.

Things to do in Bernkastel-Kues

Mosel Wein Museum: This multimedia museum will give you a much better understanding of the region’s winemaking traditions. Guided tours and wine sampling are available daily.

5. RÜDESHEIM AM RHEIN

In my personal opinion, I saved the best for last. I absolutely LOVE Rüdesheim! I’m not sure if it’s the ferry ride that takes you from Bingen, the quaint streets, the vineyards, or the ride over the entire village in a cable car that makes it my favorite. Maybe it’s all of the above. This is a great day trip. So much fun, in fact, that we ended up getting a room and spending the weekend.

Things to do in Rüdesheim am Rhein

Broemserburg Castle:  This is the oldest Castle in the Rhine Gorge. It is now owned by the town and is a wine museum.

Foltermuseum: Medieval torture museum.

Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Museum: This music muse

weekend in July in the historic gate is among the region’s largest wine festivals.

Kulinarischer Weinwanderweg: The Culinary Wine Trail is held on the fourth weekend in September, running through the town’s vineyards. Winemakers and food vendors offer traditional Palatine cooking, Mediterranean dishes, and wine.

Weihnachtsmarkt: The Christmas Market is held on the four weekends in Advent and attracts visitors with its Nativity scene, in which living animals are used.

How to get there

By car, it is approximately 40 minutes from Kaiserslautern. Freinsheim is approximately a 1.5 hour train ride from Kaiserslautern. The train station is very close to the city center so this is really the most convenient way to get there, especially for a wine festival.

Imperial Roman Baths: The Kaiserthermen or Imperial Baths is a large Roman bath complex. This is also designated as part of the Roman Monuments and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have been here a couple of times and it is definitely worth the small fee to take a selfguided tour.

High Cathedral of St. Peter (Cathedral of Trier):  This is the oldest Roman Catholic cathedral in the country. Another important historical location designated as part of the Roman Monuments and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

on the northern banks of the Neckar River. Historically, it was just a path through the vineyards; however, later it was renamed because of the many professors and philosophers who enjoyed the path for its solitude and beauty. Today, the path features gardens and amazing views.

Karl Theodor Bridge: Commonly known as the Old Bridge. This is the stone bridge that connects the two sides of the river. You can see this bridge in pretty much any popular picture of the view from the castle.

How to get there

By car, Heidelberg is approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes east of Kaiserslautern. Visit the Deutsche Bahn website for train information.

Dr. Loosen Winery: Famous for their Riesling! They require a confirmed appointment before you arrive with at least a 7day notice. I can personally vouch for their customer service. This is a very nice tasting.

Burg Landshut: Take a shuttle bus, the Burg Landshut Express, to the castle ruins. The trip up takes about 20 minutes. This castle was largely destroyed by a fire in 1692. It’s a great place to walk around and take in the view below.

um offers a 45 minute tour for a nominal fee. This is the only option to visit the museum since the tour guides operate the musical instruments for you during the tour.

Niederwald Monument: Take the cable cars to see the panoramic views of Rüdesheim and enjoy some time at the monument. Cable cars leave from Oberstrasse.

There are also many wine tours available. When arriving in Rüdesheim am Rhein I recommend picking up a free city guide from the Tourism Office.
