435 AGOW commander highlights courage of troops, civilians at D-Day 81st anniversary commemoration

NÉGREVILLE, FRANCE – During a ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of DDay, Col. Matthew Bartlett, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing commander, based out of Ramstein Air Base, addressed a gathering of veterans, Allies, partners and local community members to honor the memory of those who served in the historic battle, June 3.

The ceremony highlighted the sacrifices of the crew and paratroopers of a C47 Skytrain that crashed nearby on the night of June 5, 1944.

Bartlett, whose wing consists of over 1,400 personnel across 11 installations in Europe and the United States, emphasized the importance of connecting with DDay history.

“We gather not merely to remember, but to connect – to forge an unbreakable link with the courage, the sacrifice, and the unwavering resolve that defined a generation,” said Bartlett.

The C47 was carrying paratroopers from Company F, 2nd Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. Piloted by 1st Lt. William Hitztaler, the aircraft was struck by antiaircraft fire shortly after crossing the Cotentin Peninsula, killing Staff Sgt. Orlo Montgomery and Pvt. Charles Stout. The plane crashed near Négreville, scattering the surviving paratroopers, many of whom were subsequently killed or captured.

Despite the devastation, Bartlett highlighted the acts of courage and compassion displayed by local citizens who risked their lives to shelter and assist the stranded paratroopers. He also shared the story of paratrooper, 1st Lt. Walter Heisler, who was captured after the crash and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner. Heisler returned to Normandy in 1999 to express his gratitude for the local people.

Col. Bartlett underscored the transformative power of unity and a common cause, as a valuable lesson in the fight for freedom, both then and now.

“DDay demonstrated the lethality of combined arms, joint, and effectiveness of integrated, multina

tional operations,” said Bartlett.

He emphasized that the United States, alongside its NATO Allies and European partners, remains committed to supporting a safe and stable region through interoperability and integrated warfare tactics.

“This is how we honor the legacy of those who fought for our freedoms – not through words, but through unwavering action and integrating with partners and Allies,” said Bartlett.

He concluded by urging everyone to leave with a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper appreciation for freedom, and a steadfast commitment to defending it for future generations. He emphasized that honoring the sacrifices of DDay veterans requires maintaining a high state of readiness and strengthening partnerships to ensure their legacy lives on.

Local government and community members also provided words of reflection and local children laid flowers around the memorial. The ceremony was a part of a larger commemoration of the 81st anniversary of DDay spanning multiple locations, events, speakers and military services around the Normandy region.

Canine tactical combat casualty care training

Working dog handlers from across the region gathered at Spangdahlem Air Base June 2 for a Canine Tactical Combat Casualty Care Training and Simulation Training event. Hosted by the Spangdahlem Veterinary Treatment Facility and 52nd Security Forces Squadron Kennels, the training brought together approximately 20 25 handlers from 52nd Security Forces Squadron Kennels, Trier Polizei, and Trier Federal Polizei, fostering vital interagency collaboration.

The allday training focused on equipping Working Dog handlers with the skills necessary to provide immediate, lifesaving care to their canine partners in the field. The training events centered around Tactical Combat Casualty Care and Military Working Dog Handler Critical Skills – a comprehensive approach to canine emergency medicine.

“Our MWDs are invaluable assets, and their well being is paramount,” stated Spangdahlem Veterinary Treatment Facility officer in charge Capt. Javier Pino. “This training isn’t just about knowing what to do; it’s about building confidence and proficiency in assessing and stabilizing a canine facing a medical emergen

cy. Time is critical, and handlers are often the first responders.”

The training covered a wide range of potential canine medical scenarios, including vital sign assessment, comprehensive physical exams, and the crucial primary survey process. Specific emphasis was placed on recognizing and treating conditions frequently

encountered by working dogs, such as heat injury, penetrating wounds, and head traumas.

Handlers also received indepth training on managing heat and cold injuries, addressing eye injuries, applying splints for fractures, and treating paw/pad injuries – all common occurrences for canines operating in diverse environments.

erinarian to arrive which can cost precious minutes in saving him.”

Beyond the technical skills, a key objective of the training was to strengthen relationships with local law enforcement agencies. Sharing best practices and standardized procedures ensures seamless interoperability during joint operations and mutual aid situations. The opportunity for handlers from different organizations to train together builds trust and understanding.

“Working with our counterparts in the German and Luxembourgian police forces is essential, because not only do we get to learn from each other, we have the opportunity to build lasting relationships that we continue to strengthen over time” explained Pino.

The training concluded with realistic simulation exercises, allowing handlers to practice their skills in a controlled environment.

“This training has been crucial for us, it’s the first time ever that I receive comprehensive training for our dogs like this,” said Trier Police Commissioner Volker Heibel. “Each of our teams has a dog that they go on patrol with, but we aren’t taught how to take care of him in case of an emergency. We are asked for the vet

“Simulations included scenarios involving a dog suffering from a bullet wound during a patrol and a paw injury sustained during a building search,” said Pino.

The event prepared participants to provide immediate and effective care to their canine partners, ultimately enhancing mission readiness and strengthening regional security cooperation.

70 Years of Global Health: International Military Veterinary Summit strengthens alliances, force protection

Health Command Europe Command Team members, veterinarians and Veterinary Corps Chiefs from numerous partner nations.

Ettal, Germany – U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe hosted the 70th International Military Veterinary Summit bringing together more than 120 members from 19 partner nations. The event in Ettal, Germany, from May 17 23, served as a critical platform for veterinary training and international collaboration.

IMVS, a cornerstone of military veterinary medicine for seven decades, has evolved significantly since its inception in 1952 at Chiemsee, Germany. Initially focused on food safety, the summit now addresses a broad spectrum of issues vital to Force Health Protection. This year’s theme, “Veterinary Partnerships, the Foundation for Building Capacity Across Borders,” underscored the importance of collaborative solutions to global health challenges. Attendees included the Commanding General of Medical Readiness Command Europe, the President of the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps Chief, alongside Public

The summit fostered interoperability through critical information sharing and the advancement of shared standards in areas like disease surveillance, food safety, animal and zoonotic disease control.

Presentations and discussions covered a wide range of topics, from combating transboundary animal diseases and investigating foodborne illnesses to rapid rabies risk assessment, Canine Leishmaniasis, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, and water supply quality.

“We all struggle with the same tasks.”
Col.

In his opening remarks, Public Health Command Europe commander Col. Paul Lang highlighted the evolution of the U.S. Army

Veterinary Corps from its initial focus on food inspection to its current multifaceted role in force protection, global health engagement, biomedical research, and partner capacity building. Lang stressed that the veterinary profession is not simply about treating animals, but about “safeguarding readiness, preventing disease, and strengthening alliances.”

Several attendees highlighted the lasting value of the IMVieand the benefits of international collaboration.

Col. Niels Nielson, the Veterinary Corps Chief for the Danish Armed Forces Medical Command, an attendee since 2006, emphasized the practical benefits of the event.

“We all struggle with the same tasks,” Nielson explained. “Meeting and discuss

ing how each country is handling them proves beneficial for all of us. If a Danish veterinarian and a U.S. veterinarian meet in Afghanistan, it’s easier if we go with the same approach.”

The Chief of the Veterinary Support Branch in Slovakia, Col. Jozef Nemeth, noted the importance of networking and knowledge exchange.

“Seeing what other nations are doing and we are not, allows us to implement that in our country,” Nemeth said, adding that even informal interactions during coffee breaks provide valuable learning opportunities, particularly for junior officers. Given Slovakia’s proximity to Ukraine, he was particularly interested in presentations regarding veterinary role 2 capabilities.

The 70th IMVS reaffirmed the enduring importance of international collaboration in addressing shared health security challenges. By fostering knowledge sharing, strengthening partnerships, and promoting interoperability, the summit laid a strong foundation for continued success in protecting both military personnel and global public health.

100-kilometer remembrance march

Courtesy story and photos

In 2025 we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II (19452025). Therefore, the Historical Research Group of RheinlandPfalz (IG Heimatforschung RheinlandPfalz), hosted a special memorial march in remembrance of all Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of World War II. For service men and women of all nationalities, whether Allied or belonging to the Axis powers at the time: Everyone fought for their country, everyone had a family, everyone made great sacrifices. No one will be forgotten! Enemies then, this is a remembrance march in the name of international understanding.

The march began on June 6 at Waldsee and took 59 participants on a 100kilometer march to Casemate Esch in Hatten in the Alsace region of France in 24 hours. In 1945 after a plane crash crew parachuted in Germany near the French border, they marched their way back 100kilometers to the American lines in France.

The historic route led along many memorials for U.S., Canadians, British, German and French casualties. The march was designed as a semitactical evasion march, with almost no water, food or gear, except evasion/survival kits: Many aircraft crews who parachuted

out of their aircraft found themselves behind enemy lines after their plane was shot down. Those who could tried to “fight” (and walk) their way back to their own lines. Their route was almost always a very long one, full of adversities and hardship.

To mimic the march being “behind enemy lines,” during the night and on the way to the finish line, they were met by oppositional forces, former elite German military, minefields, and surprises like trip wires, dogs, German military on motorcycles and other obstacles.

All finishers were greeted by air raid alarm sirens and a beer, after a last dash up the bunker of the casemate. Some had finished other 100kilometer marches in earlier years, but for all participants it was the hardest march of their lives. One of the goals was to get a glimpse of what the brave ally soldiers had to endure 80 years ago. Remembrance, but a with personal challenge.

A total of 24 participants from the U.S., Germany, the Netherlands, France and Poland completed the whole 100kilometer stretch and received a welldeserved medal and a certificate from the Mayor of Hatten, Alsace.

A further 100kilometer remembrance march is planned for June 2026.

Some participants had to give up due to exhaustion and blisters.

Leaders build resilience, unity through R2 challenge

Senior leaders from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command tackled a teambuilding obstacle

course on June 9 on Panzer Kaserne, part of Sustainment Week and in recognition of the Army’s 250th birthday.

The event, part of the Army’s Ready and Resilient program, challenged par

ticipants to complete physical tasks that required coordination, adaptability, and communication. Skills essential to leading in highpressure environments.

Leaders were grouped

into small teams and rotated through a series of obstacles designed to test both endurance and cooperation. Tasks focused on decisionmaking under stress and effective team dynamics.

Master resilience trainers and performance experts Daren Koehler and Dr. Eric Biener from the R2 Performance Center in Vilseck facilitated the training. Using evidencebased methods, they helped participants reflect on their performance and apply lessons in stress regulation, communication, and leadership.

“The obstacle course wasn’t just about fitness. It was about connection,” said Sabrina Martinez, R2 program manager for 21st TSC. “We created conditions where leaders had to rely on one another the same way they would in operational environments.”

Soldiers guided one another through problemsolving challenges, with an emphasis on shared success rather than individual achievement. The course encouraged leaders to support peers they may not work with regularly, helping build cohesion across staff elements.

“The R2PC is focused on preparing Soldiers to perform in any operational setting,” Biener said. “That means building mental readiness alongside physical capability.”

The R2 Performance Center supports units across U.S. Army Europe and Africa with programs in cognitive performance, resilience, and leadership development.

This course is one of several initiatives within the 21st TSC to enhance leader development and unit readiness as part of the Army’s prevention and performance strategy.

ABC IN KMC: Summer solstice

Johannisnacht, also known as St. John’s Eve, is a festive celebration associated with summer solstice and has had key significance throughout history. This is the time of the year at which the sun reaches its maximum declination marked by the longest day of the year. Sunrise will be at 5:23 a.m. in Kaiserslautern tomorrow, providing a sunlight duration of more than 16 hours. In other words, summer is here!

The Roman calendar marked June 24 as the summer solstice and was celebrated during the Vestalia festival. It honored Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. Rituals included married women entering the temple of Vesta to leave offerings in exchange for blessings for their families.

In Ireland, St. John’s Eve, also known as Midsummer, has deep Celtic roots. On this magical night, great bonfires are lit, and fairs and festivals are held. The sacred Celtic fire was ceremoniously kindled, and people watched for the first flash from Howth’s western promontory (near today’s Dublin). As the signal spread, local fires blazed, encircling Ireland in a ring of flame. The Goddess Áine was also honored during this time, as she ruled as a fairy queen and banshee, associated with prosperity and abundance. People carried burning hay or straw torches to ensure fertility for the year ahead.

Stonehenge in England was meticulously designed to align with the sun’s movement. During the summer solstice, the sun rises just to the left of the outlying Heel Stone in the northeast part of the horizon. Standing in the middle of the monument on a midsummer’s day, the sun’s first rays shine directly into the heart of Stonehenge, where visitors can witness the sensational occurrence.

Sankthansaften owes a debt to Viking and pagan traditions. It celebrates the summer solstice and the return of light. The Vikings revered the summer solstice as the peak of summer, marked by long days and flourishing crops. They held large feasts and made offerings to honor the gods and seek prosperity.

The tradition lives on in Scandinavia, where people celebrate Sankthansaften and Midsummer is celebrated with gusto. Sweden, in particular, has vibrant fests, where peo

ple dance around a pole called Midommarstang decorated with greenery, gather for festive meals with friends and bonfires, and women and girls adorn their heads with colorful summer flowers. Overall, the season is a time to revel in the warmth of summer, connect with nature, and celebrate community and tradition.

In Denmark, St. John’s Eve is called Mittsommernacht or SanktHansNacht. People light fires to honor the sun and nature. Dancing, singing, and flower and herb gathering are essential traditions. Dishes, such as Smørrebrød (openfaced sandwiches) and Frikadeller (Danish meatballs) are enjoyed, along with aquavit or beer. Families gather in summer houses to celebrate together. Midsummer festivals are also popular in the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland with their long, white nights.

Johannisnacht celebrations are more common in Germany’s northern states, and some festivities take place in communities close to Denmark. Smaller towns celebrate festivals with bonfires and gatherings.

The Viking city of Haithabu was a major trading hub, located near Schleswig in the state of SchleswigHolstein, and now houses an indoor and outdoor Viking Museum. The area has ancient megalithic graves and significant archaeological finds, also linked with solstices. Special workshops will be taking place on the weekend, such as archery training, making coins and craftsmen demonstrating ancient handcraft skills.

Some Native American tribes also celebrated customs linked to the summer solstice. For example, the Sioux Sundance where young warriors engaged in singing, dancing, drumming, deep prayer, meditation, and skin piercing. Medicine wheels were stone wheels constructed with 28 spokes as a tribute to the summer solstice and aligned with sunrise and sunset during the season. A further example is Fajada Butte (Chaco Canyon, New Mexico), which is home to a solar marking site that records solstices and equinoxes (around March 20 and Sept. 23).

In our region, RheinlandPfalz’s capital Mainz, which has a vibrant Roman history, initiated a Johannisnacht Festival to celebrate the longest day of the year similar to the Romans. It also commemorates Johannes Gutenberg, the

inventor of movable type printing. The festival takes place annually and is held from June 20 to 23 this year with events along the Rhein River and city center.

Other, not quite so traditional, events are also taking place in the area, such as the Medieval Market at Lichtenberg Castle from June 21 – 22, where the premises will turn into one colorful Medieval Market. The legendary lawn tractor races, the “Grand Prix of Sembach” also takes place from Friday to Sunday this weekend.

Carrying the tune of legacy: Doolittle honors Family Heritage through service, song

For Tech. Sgt. Michelle Doolittle, serving in the U.S. Air Force isn’t just a job—it’s an extension of a proud and storied family legacy.

As a vocalist in the U.S. Air Forces in EuropeAir Forces Africa Band, Doolittle represents U.S. Airmen on stages across the continent, using music to strengthen international ties and commemorate shared history. But her connection to the Air Force runs deeper than a professional calling — it’s rooted in blood, history and a namesake that echoes through the annals of World War II.

Michelle Doolittle is the great grandniece of the legendary Gen. James “Jimmy” Doolittle,

the aviation pioneer best known for leading the Doolittle Raid in 1942. The bold mission marked the first air raid on the Japanese mainland following the attack on Pearl Harbor, striking a pivotal blow for American morale in the early days of WWII. Later in the war, Gen. Doolittle would command the Eighth Air Force in Europe, coordinating strategic bombing campaigns in Nazioccupied territories and helping turn the tide in the European theater.

“My family has always been proud of our connection to General Doolittle,” Michelle said. “There’s a long history of service in the Air Force, and to my knowledge, I’m the first female in our family to actively serve.”

Michelle’s own Air Force journey began in a different key. With a background in music and vocal performance, she discov

ered a unique opportunity to serve while also pursuing her passion and joined the Air Force as a fulltime musician. When it came time to choose a branch, the decision felt natural.

“The fulltime job was the biggest motivation,” she admitted, “but I felt particularly drawn to the Air Force because of my family connection. I’m really proud to wear the uniform as a Doolittle.”

That Air Force connection became tangible at a young age. At just six years old, Michelle met Gen. Doolittle in person. The memory, while filtered through the eyes of a child, remains vivid.

“It was around Christmas, and my mom dressed my sister and me in new outfits. We had just welcomed a baby brother — named James after the General — and my dad wanted to introduce the two Jimmys,” she recalled with a smile. “I remember walking into his home office where he sat behind a large desk. He was wearing a bolo tie, which fascinated me. I’d never seen one before.”

The meeting left a lasting impression, and the General’s legacy continued to inspire her as she matured — especially during commemorative events honoring World War II’s heroes.

Michelle attended the 2023 DDay ceremonies in Normandy as a spectator, but this year, during the 81st anniversary, she returns in uniform as part of the USAFE Band. For her, the significance of that moment is immeasurable.

“Being a part of these commemorations is huge. Participating in uniform, representing both the Air Force and the Doolittle name

will be that much more special — it’s truly an honor,” she said.

Beyond the history, Michelle finds deep resonance in General Doolittle’s character—his innovation, humility and dedication to excellence.

“He was setting records and revolutionizing aviation long before WWII made him a household name,” she said. “He was endlessly talented but incredibly humble. Every move he made was calculated and intentional. I aspire to bring that kind of creativity and devotion to my own craft.”

That craft — music — is her medium of service. Just as the Doolittle Raid was a bold

statement of resilience and resolve, Michelle sees her performances as a way to carry forward the legacy of U.S. airpower, unity and morale.

She also draws inspiration from another WWIIera Airmen: Maj. Glenn Miller, the famed bandleader who boosted troop morale with his swing orchestra in the European theater. She was especially moved to learn that General Doolittle himself praised Miller’s contribution to the war effort, calling the music “the greatest morale booster in the European Theater—next to a letter home.”

“Music really is the international language,” she said. “Our mission has shifted from troop morale to strengthening relationships with our Allies, but the power of music to connect people remains the same.”

Michelle has performed at events like the Berlin Airlift commemoration and other pivotal ceremonies across Europe. For her, these aren’t just gigs — they’re sacred moments of remembrance and connection.

“We’re losing more of the last surviving men and women who served during these historic times,” she said. “Prioritizing these commemorations shows we haven’t forgotten their sacrifices. As a Doolittle, it’s uniquely special to be part of that.”

Whether standing before a crowd in Normandy, performing in Berlin, or sharing stories of resilience through song, Sergeant Doolittle carries the weight — and the pride — of a historic name. And in doing so, she adds her own verse to the legacy of courage, service and connection that began in the skies over Europe more than 80 years ago.

Music lovers will be in for a treat, as well: The town offers worldrenowned music festivals, including one scheduled for this fall. Upon approach, Schwetzingen seems very much like many other small German cities. It offers halftimbered buildings, a town square and an overall sense of impeccable neatness and cleanliness. It does have something quite unique, however: An amazing palace, complete with castle and gardens. And, as travelers get closer to the palace, they might notice a distinct difference in the state and stature of this former cultural and political seat for Palatine princes.

The castle

The Schloss (castle) dates back to 1350 when it was a small moated castle and hunting lodge. In the 1700’s, Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm commissioned work to be done to increase the palace space and gardens.

Another highlight of this castle is the theater. Of special note, the Rococco Theater is an ornate and majestic entertainment venue in the north wing of the palace. It also was the first theater in Europe to include galleries.

There is a wealth of information available on the castle’s website. For a great outdoor experience, most visitors can easily manage to fill a fullday trip of seeing the neverending gardens (€9/ adults or €22.50 for a family ticket, and a bit more with a guided tour).

Beautiful Gardens

The magnificent gardens of Schwetzingen immediately take your breath away. Visitors are often impressed – and sometimes overwhelmed – with the attention to detail in the many gardens of this estate. When you go, take a good pair of shoes: The grounds are extensive. It took us a little over two hours to finish most of them.

Our first stop was in the garden museum, which introduced us to the many phases of expan

sion of the gardens over the years. A great deal of restoration began around the 1970’s and continues today to maintain the integrity and authenticity of each garden’s intent.

As we walked the gardens, we could definitely see the difference between the influences of the time, style and design. Those who love to garden (and even those who don’t) might be able see the strict, linear lines of early 18th century French gardens. It’s also fun to turn a corner and then be pleasantly surprised by the freespirit English features intertwined into the design.

Statues

Schwetzingen Gardens offer a veritable treasure trove of sculptures. Though many are classic in design and intent, you’ll be surprised and delighted by how and where they are placed throughout the outdoor visiting areas.

There are also a number of wonderful buildings to find, view and explore. These include a mosque in the Turkish garden, a Roman aqueduct, and Roman baths. All together, these help contribute to an overall sense of being transported to a different time and place.

Music Festivals

Today, Schwetzingen is famous for hosting excellent annual music festivals. Most notably, the Schwetzingen com

munity embraces and celebrates the classics.

The garden and palace host numerous evens throughout the year, and most notably the SWR Schwetzingen Festival. More information can be found at https://www.visitschwetzingen. de/en/culture/musicfestivals

Neighboring Cities

One of the best discoveries of Schwetzingen is its proximity to both of the beautiful cities of Mannheim and Heidelberg. Traveling to Schwetzingen is definitely worth a day trip. But by making a weekend of it, you would be seeing the best this area has to offer.

How to Get There

A drive to Schwetzingen is approximately 1 hour east of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 30 minutes north of Stuttgart, and over 1 hour south of Wiesbaden. Also check the Deutsche Bahn website for train details.
