MARRAKESH, MOROCCO – U.S.
Air Force Senior Airman Abdoul Yam is many things: A material management craftsman, a Guardsman with the 121st Logistics Readiness Squadron, 121st Air Refueling Wing, and a linchpin in one of the Air National Guard’s most logistically complex missions in Africa. But beyond the technical expertise and uniform, he is also a master communicator, fluent in six languages, and counting.
Born in New York to parents with deep roots in Mauritania, Morocco, and Senegal, Yam’s cultural tapestry is as rich as his linguistic abilities.
“I was born in the States, but I
was raised in Mauritania,” he said. “My mother worked for a foreign government, so I traveled a lot growing up. I learned early on how valuable it is to connect with people through language.”
Yam speaks French, Arabic, Spanish, English, Wolof, and Fulani. Currently, he’s teaching himself Dutch — and he sees language as more than just a tool; it’s a bridge. During African Lion 2025, a multinational military exercise in Morocco, that bridge proved essential.
“The team was operating out of a civilian airport, which is completely different from a military installation. There were communication gaps,” Yam said. “Something as simple as asking where to change our clothes before heading to the hotel turned into a misunderstand-
ing. The local staff thought we were talking about exchanging money. I stepped in and clarified everything in French.”
Yam’s presence helped expedite ground coordination, smoothed logistics, and elevated team morale. He became the de facto liaison between the U.S. service members and local nationals. Whether navigating customs or negotiating in the marketplace, his ability to shift languages, built trust.
But Yam doesn’t flaunt his talents.
“I actually don’t like bringing up the languages I speak,” he said. “Some people in the U.S. see it as showing off. To me, it’s just part of who I am.”
Since joining the Ohio Air National Guard in December 2022, Yam has worked in mobility gear logistics and customer service. His
unit ensures deployed members are equipped with essential gear, from chemical protective suits to aircraft parts.
“When a part breaks down on the aircraft, we’re the ones who figure out how to get the replacement, where it is in the world, and how fast we can get it,” he said.
When asked why he joined the military, Yam’s answer was both humble and powerful. After coming to the U.S. in 2019 to pursue soccer and education, he realized college was expensive and began exploring other options.
“The military wasn’t my first plan. But I wanted to build a life I earned myself. I didn’t want things handed to me because of who my parents are back in Mauritania. I wanted to write my own story.”
His story now includes repre-

senting the Air National Guard on the international stage.
“Not many people know what the Guard does,” he said. “Us being here shows how we support not just our state, but global missions too.”
Yam sees his journey as a testament to resilience, identity, and the power of service.
“I used to be the kid who had everything handed to him. The military changed that. Now, I’m someone who earns what he has.” And he’s not done yet.
“Next up is German,” he smiled. “Once you know Dutch, it makes it easier.”
In a world often divided by language, Yam is proof that communication isn’t just about speaking — it’s about connecting. And for the Air Force, that connection is mission-critical.

A process improvement developed by Master Sgt. Rene Aure, the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Inspector General superintendent, has been recognized by the Air Force Inspector General as the Air Force IG Enterprise’s “Best Practice” of the year.
The recognition stems from Aure’s development of the 435th AGOW’s Power BI IG Dashboard. Power BI, according to Microsoft, is a suite of software services, apps, and connectors that transforms unrelated data sources into coherent, visually immersive, and interactive insights.
During a January 2025 inspection, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe IG team was impressed by the dashboard’s innovative approach. The tool consolidates key IG data and metrics into an easily understandable visual, allowing keyword searches to target specific areas of interest. As a result, USAFE IG graded the 435 AGOW Commander’s Inspection Program as “Highly Effective” and submitted the Power BI database to AF/ IG for consideration as a best practice.
Now, USAFE’s submission of Aure’s innovative best practice has been recognized as the Air Force IG Enterprise’s top solution.
Presented at the Worldwide IG Training Conference on May 8, Aure’s briefing impressed an audience of over 300 Air Force inspectors general. Following presentations of six approved best practices, Lt. Gen. Stephen Davis, Air Force Inspector General, facilitated a vote where Aure’s creation emerged as the clear winner.
“Master Sgt. Aure’s creation spoke volumes even in his absence,” said Lt. Col. Eric G. Chase, the 435 AGOW Inspector General. “He was on paternity leave during USAFE/IG’s 24-month capstone inspection on the Wing in January. However, his intuitive design allowed MAJCOM inspectors to understand its functionality quickly and easily, compelling USAFE/IG to champion the database as a ‘Best Practice’ to SAF/IG. I’m enormously proud of Master Sgt Aure
“I am happy to help people find better ways of getting after the mission.”
and how the Air Force IG Enterprise has recognized him.” Aure, who arrived at the 435th AGOW in
January of last year, recognized the need for improvement in the existing inspection data compilation process.
“Before this process improvement, compiling the necessary data for the deficiency and observation tracker was time-consuming, taking upwards of 20 hours a week,” Aure explained.
The Power BI tracker automates the entire process, pulling data directly from the official SharePoint source. According to Aure, this reduces the workload to just two hours per week and ensures data integrity, eliminating the risk of human error.
The new system also allows for increased visibility. Before the Power BI tracker was implemented, unanswered self-assessment checklist items were not tracked. Since its implementation, those unanswered items have decreased from 850 to 54. The system also highlighted a disconnect between non-compliant checklist ratings and the initiation of corresponding observations, which has prompted leadership to take swift corrective actions. Tier 3 and No Tier Observations have decreased from 116 to 32 since the tracker was implemented.
Aure emphasized the importance of making data accessible and actionable. The Power BI tracker presents information concisely, empowering leadership to quickly identify areas that need attention and make informed decisions.
Aure’s innovation also addresses previous system access concerns. The IG uses a system called IGEMS, which requires specific training and access requirements, limiting the number of individuals who can use the system. Power BI pulls information directly from IGEMS, minimizing the risk of unauthorized individuals changing information in the system.
Power BI also has potential applications beyond IG processes. Aure believes it can be used to track data related to finances, sales, resource allocation, physical training compliance, and deployment requirements.
“I have had quite a few people reach out to me to see how they can leverage the system,” said Aure. “I am happy to help people find better ways of getting after the mission.”

A Royal Moroccan Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon makes contact with a U.S. Air Force KC-135R Stratotanker assigned to the 166th Air Refueling Squadron, 121st Air Refueling Wing, Ohio National Guard, for a simulated air-to-air refuel qualification during African Lion 2025 in Morocco, May 13. The KC-135R conducted simulated refueling for 16 F-16s during their mission.
U.S. Air Force and Royal Moroccan Air Force members attach a litter to support brackets during a static aeromedical evacuation exercise as part of African Lion 2025 at Kenitra Air Base, Morocco, May 16. Both services participated in an aeromedical evacuation exercise to enhance joint medical readiness and strengthen interoperability.
MARRAKESH, MOROCCO — Against the backdrop of desert skies and dynamic terrain, more than 10,000 troops from 50 nations converged for African Lion 2025, the largest joint annual military exercise on the African continent. From May 12–23, U.S. and Moroccan Air Forces led an array of tactical operations, from lifesaving medical evacuations to complex air-to-air refueling missions, showcasing the strength of multinational cooperation and strategic readiness.
At Kenitra Air Base, U.S. and Moroccan medical teams sharpened their aeromedical evacuation capabilities during an intensive weeklong training. Crews executed two live fly missions and two static scenarios aboard a Moroccan C-130H Hercules, preparing to stabilize and transport patients under operational stress.
“Aeromedical evacuation is a vital capability for joint forces because it delivers rapid, life-saving care while preserving combat power,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col.
Scott Helmer, flight nurse, 139th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, New York Air National Guard. “It ensures our joint force can fight, recover, and return stronger, anytime, anywhere.”
The training also included combat offloading events and joint aircraft inspections, which not only enhanced clinical proficiency but also strengthened trust between partner forces.
“This training enhances interoperability by aligning procedures, building shared medical standards, and improving how we communicate and operate as a unified medical team,” Helmer added.
Meanwhile, high above Marrakesh, the rumble of U.S. Air Force KC-135R Stratotankers echoed across the sky as 166th Air Refueling Squadron Airmen from the Ohio Air National Guard conducted air-to-air refueling familiarization flights with Royal Moroccan Air Force F-16 pilots.
More than 35 Moroccan pilots executed multiple “dry contact” refueling passes, maneuvers that simulate mid-air refueling without the fuel transfer, to build muscle memory and mission readiness.
“Although we didn’t offload fuel during these dry contacts, this type of training is essential for maintaining proficiency, currency, and trust in multinational operations,” said Master Sgt. Anthony Derryberry, tactics noncommissioned officer in charge, 166th ARS.
“Air-to-air refueling is a complex maneuver, and to conduct it safely and effectively requires precision and coordination,” added U.S. Air Force Col. Dennis Bird, director of operations, Ohio National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters. “This training strengthens their capability and deepens our cooperation and interoperability with the Moroccans.”
The multi-domain nature of African Lion 2025, encompassing land, air, maritime, space, and cyberspace operations, reflects the evolving challenges faced by global coalitions.
“The rigorous training scenarios we face in African Lion 25 push us to our limits, ensuring we’re prepared for the complexities of real-world operations,” said Lt. Gen. Jason Hinds, USAFE-AFAFRICA deputy commander. “This exercise builds the readiness we need to respond effectively to any challenge alongside Allies and partners.”
U.S. Air Force KC-135s delivered crucial
airlift support and airdrop missions, while Moroccan-led medevac exercises provided New York and New Jersey Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve units the chance to simulate patient movement in high-stress, combat-like scenarios.
For U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces in Africa, the exercise underscores the commitment to partnership and preparation.
“Working with our Moroccan partners during African Lion has been a great opportunity to build real-world readiness,” said Maj. Kelly Machado, USAFE-AFAFRICA African Lion lead planner. “Whether it’s practicing air-to-air refueling or training for aeromedical evacuation, this exercise helped us learn from each other and stay ready for whatever comes next.”
As African Lion 2025 concludes, the shared experiences, lessons learned, and bonds formed between U.S. and Moroccan forces serve as a testament to the power of partnership.
Every dry contact, every simulated medevac, and every joint planning session has reinforced a singular goal, staying ready, together, for the challenges of tomorrow.

Personnel from the 405th Army Field Support Brigade headquarters conducted a professional development staff visit to one of the facilities of a major worldwide logistics corporation recently to observe operations and see, first-hand, some of the latest innovations in transportation, logistics, safety and personnel management.
Led by the brigade labor advisor, Christine Schneider, more than a dozen staff members from the 405th AFSB visited the Amazon Fulfillment Center in West Kaiserslautern May 30 where they were provided with a comprehensive operational briefing and a 2-hour tour of the facility.
Frederic Le Pon is the operations manager for outbound shipping at the fulfillment center, which employs over 2,500 personnel and ships 2-3 million packages a week. Le Pon, a retired French Air Force captain with
30 years of service who was once stationed at Ramstein Air Base, greeted the 405th AFSB visitors and led them on the tour through the center.
“We have thousands of people working here,” said Le Pon. “It’s important for Amazon and for us to show our operations, here. It’s impossible to imagine all that’s goes on here without coming here and seeing it for yourself. It’s almost unbelievable, really.”
Le Pon said besides the 2,500 associates at the fulfilment center, there are over 23,000 robots in the four-levels of the facility, equivalent to about six football fields of robots. The center, which opened in 2022, manages about 22 million articles at any given moment. With 35,000 items shipped per hour, on average, the goal is 12 hours or less per item, start to finish. That includes processing, packaging, loading and shipping.
“We can’t afford to miss anything or make any mistakes,” said Le Pon, who has about 230 employees in his outbound shipping department. “One small mistake can
affect the shipment of 7,000 items. In one minute, we can impact 7,000 customers.”
“I want us to be the best in Germany, which we were last month,” added Le Pon, who said the Kaiserslautern fulfillment center is one of the biggest in the country. “We went from worst to best in eight months.”
During the tour, Le Pon walked the group of visitors from the 405th AFSB from one end of the facility to the other. He showed them a couple of the packaging and processing areas on the first floor, and he took everyone up to the third floor, which is mostly operated by robots. He also walked the group to the shipping area in one of the far corners of the fulfillment center. He was quick to point out the shipping area and operations there are his responsibility. He said his team loads a hundred delivery trucks an hour during scheduled outbound shipping times.
“Our guide was great, very knowledgeable,” said Terry Bernas, a logistics management specialist at the brigade’s operations directorate (S-3). “It was amazing to hear
from him on how efficient he expects his team to be and the standards he holds them to. With all that volume, the productivity level was unbelievable.”
“As a logistician, myself, to see how operations work at that fulfillment center and the way they do business was extremely valuable. I believe there are operational innovations we observed today that could be implemented into Army logistics and Army support operations in the future,” said Bernas.

For U.S. Air Force Warrant Officer Jacob Richman, success hasn’t come from shortcuts or luck. It’s been built brick by brick with discipline, consistency and grit.
Richman, a former 1st Combat Communications Squadron deployable communications technical specialist, was the only Airman stationed at Ramstein Air Base to be selected for the U.S. Air Force’s new Warrant Officer Program. It’s a historic achievement that marks him as a technical leader within both his squadron and the greater U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa mission.
But his journey didn’t start with selection, it started with a plan.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” Richman said. “Create a plan, stick to it and be consistent; also take pride in your small victories.”
Those victories began stacking up over 11 years of service. A bachelor’s degree, certifications and a relentless commitment to mastering his craft laid the foundation for what would become a defining moment in his career. Richman’s formula was simple: While motivation comes and goes, discipline is what carries you through.
Still, the path wasn’t without setbacks. Richman was previously denied entry into the cyber direct commissioning program, a blow that might’ve derailed others. But for him, it only fueled the fire.
“My leadership surprised me after months of waiting to give me the news that I had been selected for Warrant Officer Training School,” Richman said. “It was a very validating moment that made
me feel like all my hard work had paid off.”
At the time, Richman was already a technical sergeant selected to become the next rank of master sergeant. His career was on track for greater supervisory responsibility, but it also meant leaving behind what he loved most: Hands-on technical work.
“I wanted to be a warrant officer because it felt like what I was meant to do,” he said. “It keeps me close to hands-on work and the technical side of the Air Force. I was familiar with who warrant officers were and what they were about as I was stationed at Fort
Bragg. They really set the standard and gave me something to strive to be; I knew it would be best for me.”
Richman’s leadership agreed.
“Richman frankly embodies the technical leadership and expertise from the warfighting communications community shown across U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa,” said Col. Scott Weed, 435th Communications Operations Group commander. “He built a history of sustained performance across his career, more than fulfilling mission requirements.”
But for Richman, recognition and rank does not define success.
“Ultimately when you become a supervisor and a leader, you are no longer the focus,” he said. “It becomes bigger than yourself, your focus is your Airmen, challenging and developing them. Seeing them thrive personally and professionally is more fulfilling than any individual accomplishments you’ll ever have.”
As the first warrant officer select in USAFE-AFAFRICA, Richman has set the bar for what comes next, bringing deep technical expertise to the force and helping bridge the operational demands of today with the mission-readiness of tomorrow. Warrant officers are a strategic
investment in the Air Force’s future, lethal, agile and technically rooted. With Richman leading the charge, the future is already taking shape. Now stationed at Warner Robbins Air Force Base, Richman continues his role as a technical expert, bringing his experience to a new base. He will continue to bridge the gap between hands-on execution and broader operational strategy, ensuring that our communication capabilities evolve to meet modern needs. Richman represents a growing shift in the Air Force’s approach of cultivating technical leaders who shape the fight into the future.

A vital partnership between the U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe and the Federal Office of the Bundeswehr Infrastructure, Environmental Protection and Services is bolstering operational readiness and strengthening security cooperation across Europe.
Focused on ensuring the safety and reliability of drinking water at U.S. Army installations, the collaboration highlights the importance of shared standards and open communication between allied forces.
To foster relationships and exchange knowledge, Bettina Eckels, a long-serving Environmental
Engineer with PHCE, presented “PHCE’s Role in U.S. Army Drinking Water System Surveillance in U.S. Army Installations in Europe” at the four-day symposium for Water Technology and Hygiene at the Bundeswehr Education Center in Mannheim on April 30.
According to Public Health Command Europe’s Chief of Environmental Health Lt. Col. Paul Hester, “Eckels’ role as a liaison between PHCE and host nation environmental health authorities is crucial. Her deep understanding of both U.S. Army protocols and German regulations makes her uniquely positioned to navigate the complexities of maintaining water quality across multiple installations.”
The presentation detailed PHCE’s comprehensive surveillance program, encompassing regular testing, thorough system inspections, and proactive risk assessments. It underscored the Army’s commitment to meeting U.S. and German water quality standards.
“A secure and reliable drinking water supply is fundamental to operational capability,” explains Eckels. “It directly impacts our ability to train, maintain readiness, and support our personnel.”
Maintaining this supply requires a complex blend of logistics, scientific monitoring, and adherence to stringent regulations.
This collaboration is a twoway street. The aim is a reciprocal
exchange of information, allowing both organizations to leverage each other’s strengths. German expertise in local geological conditions and regional environmental factors complements the Army’s robust surveillance programs and advanced analytical capabilities.
“The exchange of expertise between armed forces is vital – it allows us to learn from each other, share best practices, and ultimately strengthen cooperation and mutual operational readiness,” says Eckels. “This highlights the strategic value of the partnership, extending beyond simply ensuring safe drinking water.”
In today’s complex security environment, strong alliances
and interoperability are essential. By collaborating on critical infrastructure issues like water safety, the US Army and German Bundeswehr are demonstrating a commitment to mutual support and collective security. This fosters trust, enhances understanding, and builds a shared responsibility for maintaining a secure environment in Europe.
PHCE’s EHE division is committed to continuing this dialogue. “PHCE, EHE hopes to maintain that dialog in the future,” confirms Hester. Potential future collaborations include joint training exercises, shared research projects, and the development of standardized monitoring protocols.

The Memorial Day weekend and motorcycle safety awareness month officially kicked off the Army’s 101 critical days of summer safety, and the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s safety office is placing enormous effort into communicating with leaders and employees across the brigade about safety.
LaShaun Chappell, 405th AFSB safety specialist, and Leann Fraka, brigade safety manager, will be emphasizing important summer safety topics throughout the 101 critical days of summer safety to help the brigade’s workforce stay safe. Chappell said motorcycle safety is the first area they’re focusing on during their “safety starts with me” campaign and the Army’s 101 critical days of summer safety now through Labor Day.
“The Army really emphasizes the importance of motorcycle rider safety because throughout the Army as a whole there are thousands upon thousands of riders, both in the continental United States and outside the continental United Sates, like here in Europe,” said Chappell.
Chappell said when it comes to motorcycle safety, it starts with proper training. Motorcycle riders
need to understand and know their limits and the limits and capabilities of the motorcycles they operate.
“Getting a motorcycle that you can handle is important. Motorcycles come with different engine sizes, and there are different types of motorcycles. Not everyone has the proper experience to handle one of those big monster bikes or sport-type bikes, so understanding your limits is number one,” Chappell said.
James Charette has owned several motorcycles over the years and has personally been involved in a motorcycle accident. The director of Logistics Readiness Center Rheinland-Pfalz said he can’t stress enough the importance of motorcycle safety, not just for the motorcycle riders but for all motorists on the road.
“As someone who has been in a motorcycle accident, wearing of the proper gear during every ride is so important,” Charrette said. “I also ask that drivers pay attention to their surroundings and look out for motorcycles.”
“Safety starts with me,” said Michael Leyba, LRC RheinlandPfalz’ chief of transportation division. “As part of being prepared at the beginning of each riding season, I make sure my motorcycle is mechanically sound, I take time to check all the safety features of

my bike, including the tires, brakes, lights and fluid levels, along with belts and hoses and more.”
“Please wear protective clothing, boots and gloves,” said Nigel Power, an environmental and hazardous materiel specialist with LRC Rheinland-Pfalz. “Don’t let the wind on your skin be what you leave on the road. Ride safe and sensibly.”
Personal protective equipment while operating a motorcycle starts with a DOT approved helmet, or if outside the U.S. an HN approved helmet. Personal protective equipment also includes impact and shatter resistance eye protection, sturdy over-the-ankle foot protection, and full protective clothing, which includes a long-sleeved shirt or jacket, long trousers, and full-fingered gloves or mittens made from leather or other abrasion-resistant material. Motorcycle jackets and pants constructed of abrasion-resistant materials and containing impactabsorbing padding and personal protective equipment that incorporates fluorescent colors and retro-reflective material are highly encouraged.

VEPRIU ROCKET BASE, LITHUANIA —
Ninety-nine U.S. Army medical personnel from the 519th Hospital Center and 421st Multi-Functional Medical Battalion completed a 1,900-kilometer convoy from Rhine Ordnance Barracks, to Vepriu Rocket Base, Lithuania, on May 5 in support of DEFENDER 25 and a hospital field exercise known as HOSPEX.
The mission tested Army medical readiness and aimed to certify the 519th Hospital Center as Europe’s only NATO Role 2 Enhanced (2E) forward-deployed field hospital. In addition, the Hospital Center tested Army Doctrine, supporting a movement of 35 percent (one-third) of the Field Hospital’s organic equipment and personnel. This vital tactical ability allows Army Medicine to support combatant commanders through the principles of mobility, proximity, and flexibility.
“This type of movement hasn’t been done by a medical formation in recent history,”
said Col. Avery Carney, commander of the 519th Hospital Center. “What seemed impossible six months ago not only became achievable but became routine.”
The convoy included 29 tactical vehicles, 11 trailers, and 99 Soldiers, later dubbed “The 99.” The team transported 35 percent of the field hospital’s capability, moving through Germany and Poland before arriving in Lithuania.
Maj. Christopher Lee, the convoy commander, emphasized the importance of early planning, effective leadership, and vehicle readiness as keys to success. “Many of our Soldiers come from a hospital environment, not the field,” Lee said. “But with a clear plan and team buy-in, we proved we could execute at scale.”
Support came from across the 30th Medical Brigade, including the 512th Field Hospital, the 8th Medical Logistics Company, the 557th Medical Company (Area Support), the 7384th Blood Support Detachment, and the 160th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachment.
Leadership designated five vehicle serials with specific responsibilities and embedded medical and maintenance support.
Capt. Kristina Bean, a nurse and vehicle operator, described the effort as “a great opportunity to test the operational side of Army Medicine.” The team encountered mechanical issues, logistical challenges, and international movement restrictions, but overcame them through rehearsed battle drills and adaptive leadership.
The unit spent March conducting convoy rehearsals and vehicle maintenance, a period dubbed “March Madness and Maintenance.” Each serial was led by a designated officer and supported by experienced non-commissioned officers, such as Staff Sgt. Ruzzel Dimal, the convoy NCOIC.
“We had doubters at the beginning,” Dimal said. “But with defined goals and a corps-level mindset, we brought this together.”
The team was tested early when a critical generator trailer broke down. Using established drills, maintenance assets recovered the trailer without delaying the formation. Additional complications, including a lost wheel, required rapid recovery operations.
“Without our maintainers, we wouldn’t be here,” said Warrant Officer Kevin Taylor.
“They’re the glue holding this mission together.”
Fuel shortages and delayed diplomatic clearances for Polish border crossings forced the team to split and improvise. Thanks to onboard fuel reserves and last-minute approvals, the formation reassembled at the Polish border.
Along the route, Soldiers rested at staging areas such as Camp Aachen and Bemowo Piskie Training Area. At times, they slept in tents and ate MREs, but morale remained high.
On May 5, the convoy crossed into Lithuania and arrived at Vepriu Rocket Base. There, leaders lauded the team’s discipline and adaptability.
“The real value was in the preparation, the culture shift, and the leader development,” said Carney. “This was a transformational experience.”
The nickname “The 99” emerged organically and stuck. By the mission’s end, the Soldiers had proven their ability to execute strategic movement under combat-simulated conditions. “We are ‘The 99,’” they chanted at the final stop. “And we did it.”
Celine McCreery’s mother and father both served as career Army civilians. Her mother retired from government civilian service with the Army last year, and her father will be retiring in the next couple of years. Growing up in Enterprise, Alabama – just down the road from Fort Novosel where her Army parents worked – following her university studies, McCreery decided to pursue an Army civilian service career, too.
Now with five years as an Army civilian and currently assigned to the 405th Army Field Support Brigade headquarters in Kaiserslautern as an Army Expeditionary Civilian Workforce deployer, the brigade-level accountant handles all Defense Travel System and Government Travel Charge Card operations for over 400 personnel stationed in five countries across Europe.
“It’s exciting being here. It’s definitely very different from anything I’ve ever done,” said McCreery, who’s permanent organization back in the U.S. is the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory at Fort Novosel. “I’m learning so much from my team here at the 405th AFSB’s resource management office, S-8.”
“I came here with a lot of questions, and they’ve all been really helpful walking me through the brigade’s S-8 processes and procedures — not just DTS operations here in Europe, which is a little bit different than the states – but also budget and resource management program standard operating procedures and directives.”
“We are extremely proud and happy to have Ms. McCreery on our team as the lead organizational defense travel administrator for the 405th AFSB,” said Suleymanu Muhammadou, the director of the 405th AFSB’s resource management directorate. “Her leadership has driven major improvements in training compliance, documentation consolidation and audit readiness. By streamlining key processes and proactively addressing travel challenges, she has enhanced the brigade’s operational readiness and support capabilities. She exemplifies Army civilian excellence – mission-focused, adaptable and a true enabler of organizational success.”

“I’m very proud of my Army service. Here, I’m getting to see how a support brigade forward stationed overseas operates. It’s all very different from back at Fort Novosel. I’m getting a broad perspective of the Army’s mission here in Europe, and I’m proud to serve here as an AECW deployer on the year the Army celebrates its 250th birthday. Happy birthday, U.S. Army!” said McCreery, who is about halfway through an 11-month AECW deployment with the 405th AFSB.
The AECW program has deployment opportunities in a temporary duty status for six, nine, or 11 months available to permanent and term Army civilians worldwide, to include many with the 405th AFSB in Europe. Story by Spc. Mya Webster 21st Theater Sustainment Command
Heike Hartgrove was honored as the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s Civilian of the Year for fiscal year 2024 during a ceremony at Vogelweh Air Base on May 15.
Maj. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commanding general of the 21st TSC, and Michael Amarosa, executive civilian deputy to the commanding general, presented the award during a ceremony, honoring Department of the Army civilians for their continued dedication to mission support and years of federal service.
Hartgrove, who has five years of federal service, was selected for her exceptional performance in logistics and operations that directly supported mission continuity across the European theater.
“Heike’s commitment to excellence and her willingness to go above and beyond make her an invaluable member of our team,” Ragin said. “Her work ensures our Soldiers and missions are supported efficiently and effectively.”
Hartgrove played a key role in streamlining logistical coordination for large-scale exercises in Europe, enabling smoother resource tracking and faster equipment deployment. Her attention to detail, collaborative mindset, and ability to anticipate mission needs
earned her high praise from leadership and peers alike.
“When you do your job, you don’t really think of being recognized for your work, especially if you work behind the scenes mostly,” said Hartgrove. “I just want to share the recognition with everyone that believed in me and also
helped me grow professionally.”
Earlier this year, Hartgrove was recognized as the Civilian of the Quarter for the second quarter of fiscal year 2024. Her consistent performance, leadership by example, and team-first attitude helped her stand out among other candidates.
The Civilian of the Year award
is one of the highest honors a command can bestow on its civilian workforce. It highlights the crucial role that civilian employees play in advancing the Army’s mission both at home and abroad.
“Hartgrove’s recognition reflects not just her own accomplishments, but also the strength and dedica-
tion of the entire civilian workforce here at 21st TSC,” Amarosa said. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command remains committed to honoring and supporting the contributions of its civilian workforce, whose service is critical to the success of U.S. Army Europe and Africa operations.

Everyone is familiar with the blue robust cotton pants that come in all shapes, styles and sizes these days. But, did you know that the inventor of the durable textile was a German immigrant from northern Bavaria?
Löb Strauss was born in Buttenheim Feb. 26, 1829, and for economic reasons his family immigrated to San Francisco in 1846. In 1866 he founded the company “Levi Strauss & Co.” and created durable blue working trousers out of coarse cotton material with metal rivets in 1871. Strauss was inspired by dyers from the city of Nîmes in southern France, who were well known for their talent of dying fabric into a
deep blue color. Since the original idea was from Nîmes (de Nîmes in French), he used the term and anglicized it into “denim” for simplification.
Two years later in 1873 he patented his creation, more than 150 years ago. His first customers were workers and cowboys, as the pants were robust, could get dirty and were easy to clean. It was not until 1920 that the pants were referred to as jeans. In 1850 Strauss americanized his first name to Levi and became a U.S. citizen three years later and has become to be known as an idol living the American dream.
After his pants were trademarked, Strauss introduced the first ladies’ jeans and the well-known label “501” which referred to the rivets registered under the number.
It took another twenty years for Strauss to become a fashion icon though. Teenagers in the 1950’s adored actors such as James Dean and Marlon Brando and were fascinated by their deep blue indigo legwear. Actress Marilyn Monroe set a fashion trend in her tight jeans and the once mainly heavy-duty working clothes quickly found their way into stylish fashion magazines. British teenagers stormed the docks to buy jeans from American sailors directly off the ships. The “501” advertisement slogan was “Separates the men from boys” and in 1960, 58 years after Strauss’ death, the first pre-washed jeans were introduced to the market. Millions, if not billions, of pairs of the “Levi 501” have been produced and undergone over 20 makeovers
since the original patent in 1873, making it the most iconic and popular style.
Other fashion products such as jackets, shirts, skirts, dresses and handbags were soon to follow. Today, items made of the sturdy material can be found in an array of colors in addition to the traditional indigo blue and designs, including popular styles such as frayed knees or tight fit, bell-bottoms, high and low waist as well as shoes and boots.
A Japanese paid 60,000 dollars at an auction for one of the first original 501-Jeans in 2005.
In 1983 a woman from Milwaukee asked the Mayor of Buttenheim for information about a German fest on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the patent. This brought momentum into the
story behind the small town’s most famous emigrant Levi Strauss and the “father of blue jeans” and his success story.
Strauss’ birth house in Buttenheim near Bamberg in northern Bavaria was built in 1643 and the picturesque semi-timbered structure with bright blue shutters has housed a museum since 2000. It describes the story of the most famous trousers of mankind and their worldwide success and popularity. A life-size bronze figure of Levi Strauss is in the courtyard and the museum offers films, audio documents and a collection of historic Jeans models.

Races take place all weekend with special disciplines for agility, youth/teens, men and women, and promising tons of fun for spectators and competitors alike. There will also be lots of food and drinks along with live music events.
MITTERALTERMARKT
JUNE 21 – 22, BURG LICHTENBERG, THALLICHTENBERG
On the historic castle grounds (castle complex with upper and lower castles, spanning 423 m), visitors are transported back to the world of the Middle Ages. Medieval music and dance groups will entertain the audience throughout the castle complex on both days, dressed in colorful costumes and with all sorts of exotic instruments, according to ancient tradition. Crossbow and archery events complement the program. Several stalls offer food and drinks that were served to knights and damsels during the castle’s heyday. Regional produce and a lack of fast food options are also part of the program. The unique panorama of the castle complex, coupled with the medieval hustle and bustle and the attractive offerings, will leave an unforgettable positive impression.

by Jennifer Jensen 325th Fighter Wing
As Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, continues to rebuild and modernize, one of its own is doing the same — rebuilding strength, endurance and chasing dreams of Olympic gold.
For Air Force 2nd Lt. Braeden Holcombe, an engineering project programmer assigned to 325th Civil Engineer Squadron, the Air Force uniform means more than service — it’s a symbol of pushing beyond boundaries, whether in engineering projects or the Olympics.
Joint pursuits
Holcombe manages construction projects during the day and dedicates himself to a vigorous training schedule after hours, in the hopes of winning Olympic gold.
As a project programmer, Holcombe is responsible for researching, developing and creating cost estimates for construction project managers and impacting the Tyndall rebuild efforts.
“Not only is he critical in sustaining our infrastructure, but he is key to our hurricane and disaster response as a base recovery team lead,” said Lt. Col. Allen Lewis, 325th CES commander. “His ability to perform in these roles while pursuing a career as an Olympic athlete is phenomenal.”
Athletic roots
Originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado, Holcombe was recruited by the U.S. Air Force Academy for track and field
during his junior year of high school. He credits his older brother and mother for his love of sports and says his family molded him into the athlete he is today.
“My mom let me do any sport I was interested in, and my brother would ride his bike and make me run 3 miles every single day. My brother became my coach, because he saw my athletic potential,” Holcombe said.
As a proud graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Holcombe has made his mark in the track and field athlete arena, where he assisted his team in winning multiple conference titles.
The decathlon that spans 10 events and requires strength, speed and endurance across sprints, jumps, throws and distance running is Holcombe’s specialty.
The work he put into the athletic achievements at the academy also laid the groundwork for his pursuit of becoming a member of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program and an Olympian.
Showing what is possible
WCAP is an initiative that allows activeduty Airmen and guardians to train and compete at the highest levels of international sports, including the Olympic games, while continuing to serve.
Holcombe recently hit one of his biggest milestones, placing first in the National Combined Events Qualifier in Jacksonville, Florida, which will assist with his pursuit of the WCAP.
“When I’m at work, all I care about is being the best engineer I can be, but the same mentality goes for other aspects of my
life, whether it is training, family or friends,” Holcombe said. “If I am there, I am in that moment and not thinking about the other areas. Separation is crucial for overall mental health.”
For Holcombe, the path to the Olympics isn’t about personal achievement, it’s about showing what’s possible when discipline, focus and commitment converge, whether on
the track or in uniform.
“I am sincerely thankful to be a part of the Tyndall civil engineers; we are building the installation of the future,” Holcombe said. “There is no other installation in the entire DOD that is doing the things we are here, and being a part of that history is monumental.”
shaped Europe over the millennia. Plus, for English-speakers, you get to claim forevermore that you have visited a city called Worms. Though, to be fair, it’s good to know that it is actually pronounced “Vorms.”
Worms: What to Do
Visit the Rhine Promenade
As it is for many German cities, the Rhine is a force for good in Worms. The river is central to the city’s history and to its economy. So it makes sense that Worms has a lovely riverside park, known as the Rhine Promenade(https://www. worms-erleben.de/experience/entdecken-und-staunen/sehenswuer-
digkeiten/rheinpromenade.php), that makes for fine outdoor time during any season.
While you’re there, you can also see the Hagen Statue. This fiercelooking bronze warrior stands as a testament to Worms’ literary fame. The city was central to the epic heroic saga Song of the Nibelungs (https://www.worms-erleben. de/experience/entdecken-undstaunen/kulturprofile/nibelungen/ nibelungenlied.php), which was sort of like Game of Thrones for 13th century listeners.
Marvel at churches
Worms is packed with churches. Most of them are awesome enough to fascinate even those who occasionally suffer from European-
church fatigue. The massive St. Peter’s Cathedral is a must-see. St. Magnus’, St. Paul’s, and St. Martin’s are also excellent choices.
Learn more about Worms’ Jewish history
Worms has had a significant Jewish presence for much of its history. Visit the beautiful and sobering Jewish cemetery, where the oldest tombstone was erected nearly 10 centuries ago. Explore the Jewish Quarter. Visit the lovely synagogue and the Jewish museum (https://www.worms.de/juedisches-museum-EN/). You will come away illuminated.
Stroll the city
Worms has a fascinating blend of old and new. Window-shop (or
actually shop) in the beautiful pedestrian zone. Marvel at the ancient gates, walls and bridges. Surprise yourself by stumbling upon unexpected green spaces. Walking is a great way to capture the pulse of Worms.
The one thing you Hhave to see: Luther Memorial
One of the essential turning points in the history of Western civilization occurred in Worms in 1521. Martin Luther, the excommunicated monk who had nailed his famous theses to a church door in Wittenberg, was summoned to Worms – for the wonderfully named Diet of Worms – to recant what he’d said. Refusing to do so, he defied the powerful medieval Catholic church and got himself
named an outlaw in the process. But in so doing, he started the Reformation, which led to the development of Protestantism, and fundamentally reshaped the world in the process. To commemorate this, Worms has an excellent outdoor memorial (https://www.worms.de/ en/web/luther/Tourismus/LutherRundgang/Lutherdenkmal.php) that is worth a visit.
Getting there
By car, Worms is 45 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern, 45 minutes south of Wiesbaden, and one hour and forty minutes north of Stuttgart. Please check the Deutsche Bahn website(https:// www.bahn.com/en/view/bookinginformation/index.shtml) for train information.
