86th Airlift Wing leadership holds first all-calls Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Taylor D. Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing command team set aside two days last week to host their first all-calls since their arrival at Ramstein Air Base. Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th AW commander, and Command Chief Master Sgt. Hope Skibitsky discussed their lives, wing priorities, expectations for the future, and COVID-19. “This is the biggest base on the globe from a combat employment (standpoint),” Olson said. “We have to defend the base.” The command team held a total of six all-calls during the two days. Approximately 150 Airmen from each group attended in person and adhered to host nation hygiene requirements. Airmen also had the opportunity to view each all-call See ALL-CALLS, Page 2

Page 2 ALL-CALLS from Page 1 virtually from their work centers to promote physical distancing. Olson and Skibitsky began each event by sharing photo collages of their past experiences and talked about how those experiences influenced their lives and values today. “Put your energy and focus on things that you find important,” Skibitsky said. “We all have to remember that at the end of the day, whether you serve for 24 years or 34 years, who do you want sitting on the left side of the front row when it’s time for you to hang up the hat? To me, my family is who I want with me at the end.” Olson continued the all-call by discussing Airmen’s expectations of leadership, such as respect, mentorship and accountability. “Chief and I are accountable for both the successes and failures of this wing,” Olson said. “(With) successes we’ll be at the mountaintop cheering you on. We’re also accountable for the failures to give you the resources and the mentorship to (help) understand them.” Olson also listed his expectations for 86th AW Airmen, such

as having good attitudes, and having pride in themselves and their workplaces. ”You have the greatest job on the planet,” Olson said. “Look sharp, be sharp. We are professionals.” Olson also emphasized the importance of asking for help when in need and taking care of each other. He shared a personal story about losing a fellow Airman and reminded everyone to always check in on their wingman. The 86th AW leadership ended their all-calls by holding question and answer sessions with Airmen. Many Airmen asked questions about the upcoming exercise, plans for Halloween night and childcare facility operations. Skibitsky discussed the importance of the “3 Ws” in regards to keeping safe from COVID-19. “If complacency sets in, risk increases,” Skibitsky said. “Wear a mask, wash your hands and watch your distance. We have to continue to encourage people to do that so we can get on the other side of the (virus).” Olson ended the event by committing to make an even better Ramstein Air Base and thanking Airmen for their service.

October 9, 2020 SPARTAN WARRIOR from Page 1 U.S. and NATO participants. The scenarios tested players’ abilities in countering threats while building cohesive protocol for realworld events. “It’s a validation exercise for the NATO modeling and simulation group,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Christopher Zuhlke, USAFEAFAFRICA Warfare Center commander. “They have a charter, established a few years ago, that is trying to drive certain requirements, capabilities and development steps for how we do better distributed training. Across NATO and across the theater, we want to be able to connect from our homestations rather than travel to do an exercise, and this is one of the validation exercises for that.” The Warfare Center pulled participants from Geilenkirchen, Germany, for the NATO Airborne Warning and Control System; Netherlands’ Control Reporting Centers; MQ-9 operators from Creech Air Force Base, Nevada; and other entities to include fighter assets from France. “We’re connecting them all within the scenario and are able to execute our tactics, techniques and procedures to gain better interoperability, integrate our capabilities and practice how we would actually go to war,” Zuhlke said. With this proficiency, the Warfare Center is able to control the scenario as the hub while NATO participants remote into the simulation from their home stations and engage in the training, real-time. “This is the first time NATO is doing distributed training with different nations at their sites,” said Italian air force Col. Filippo

Zampella, SW 20-9 NATO exercise director. “We are not having people flying their jets in one base, but we have people flying from their sims in different sites. It’s a new capability, and the objective of this exercise is to see how valuable this kind of training is.” While virtual reality could never fully replace reality, the simulators provide a staggering replication. “We have high fidelity sims (simulators) that really are replicating the jets,” Zampella said. “The only thing they can’t give you is the total physical sensations.” In addition to the realism the simulators provide, this capability delivers a strategic advantage. “You can drive a scenario based on your best intelligence to go against the most advanced threat or adversary that’s out there,” Zuhlke said. “The second thing that it does is it allows us to protect our most critical capabilities. I can execute within the simulated environment and practice making the switch actuations and using the systems as I would in a time of war. I don’t have the opportunity to do that in a live training environment because I’m trying to protect those capabilities from being seen or exploited.” As USAFE-AFAFRICA’s largest Combined Air Operations distributed simulation exercise to date, SW 20-9 improves operational fluidity for NATO allies and partners. “Integration and interoperability with our NATO allies and partners in the region is key to our success,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Steven L. Basham, USAFEAFAFRICA deputy commander. “Spartan Warrior is a major step forward in the continued development of a shared training environment that includes a combination

of both live and virtual training within operationally relevant scenarios. The ability to tailor scenarios to a myriad of joint and coalition audiences enables global reach and power projection. Testing our integration and interoperability with allies and partners ultimately results in a more adaptive, responsive, synchronized force.” As the Air Force continues to look for innovative ways to accomplish the mission, the Warfare Center will continue to conduct these exercises by leveraging innovation. “Future Spartan Warrior exercises will become venues to validate NATO tactics, techniques and procedures including 4th and 5th generation integration, and further develop the vision for Joint All Domain Command and Control, and Agile Combat Employment,” Basham said.

Quick thinking saves USAFE data center

Story and photo by Senior Airman Noah Coger 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A Staff Sergeant from the 86th Communications Squadron was named Airlifter of the Week for his leadership, quick thinking and coordination which prevented an equipment failure in United States Air Force Europe’s largest data center, at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 14. Staff Sgt. Jordan Anthony, 86th CS cyber vulnerability management supervisor, had to think on his feet after a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning outage threatened vulnerable data servers in his section of the Network Operations shop. Anthony helped establish an air flow solution that reduced the temperature in the data center from 98 degrees F to 86 degrees F in less than two hours, effectively salvaging $265 million in assets that provide cyber capabilities for two combat commands. “If you rely on cyber capabilities on Ramstein, you know how important that data center is to the Air Base,” said Master Sgt. Richard Rawls, 86th CS Network Operations section chief.

The Network Operations shop was alerted to the rising temperature in the server room after a physical check was conducted. “We opened the server room toward the beginning of our shift and noticed the high temperature,” said Anthony. “Due to the critical nature and information stored on those servers, I contacted the emergency number for the 86th Civil Engineering Squadron for assistance.” Anthony and his team then rushed to set up an airflow system using a push-pull method via numerous fans to cool the room. His expertise was pivotal in providing the 86th CES with vital data that was necessary to develop this temporary solution. “Then, we set up 24-hour operations for physical coverage so we could have a secured room opened, which allowed the airflow system we set up to cool the room off as much as possible,” said Anthony. “We had 86th CES come out and fix the cooling unit and order parts for a second one so that if this happens again we have two fully functional coolers.” “Staff Sgt. Anthony’s quick reaction in controlling rising temperatures prevented immeasurable catastrophic impacts throughout USAFE and reinforces why the 86th CS is

truly ‘second to none’,” said Rawls. This wasn’t the only creative solution Anthony developed. He also redesigned an automated alert system that is used to notify responders to any HVAC degradation. This system allows a near real-time response, helping to ensure mission success across the European theatre. Anthony, a native of Enid, Oklahoma and an avid gamer, says he enjoys a good mental challenge. “One thing that I like about this job is how a majority of the problems we run into look similar and simple on the surface but once you dig deeper, the similarities start to fade and you realize each job has its own unique problems and solutions.” Problem solving skills are just part of what has led to Anthony’s success. His section chief attributes his leadership and hard work to his accomplishments. His leadership has been vital over the past six months to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and the shop’s reduction in manning due to deployments. His positive attitude and relentless work ethic has been much needed during some high-stress events, Rawls said.

“Jordan is the type of Airman you want in your corner when the unexpected takes place,” said Brig. Gen. Joshua M. Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “His ability to problem-solve quickly and then execute without hesitation not only saved the Air Force millions of dollars in assets, but more importantly protected the cyber capabilities of two combatant commands. Jordan stepped up to the plate when we needed him to, without hesitation, and that is exactly why he was recognized as our Airlifter of the Week.” Anthony claims he was just doing his job and was surprised by the Airlifter nomination. He was grateful to be recognized, though. “This was the first time I have been coined outside of basic training, so it was pretty special to be coined by Brig. Gen. Olson and Chief Skibitsky,” said Anthony. “A lot of the work we do goes unnoticed because of the nature of our job. So, it was nice to be recognized because it shows that others thought I was going above and beyond what I was supposed to do.” It’s Airmen like Anthony who continue to maintain Ramstein’s reputation of being the World’s Best Wing.

86 MDG reorganizes, improves healthcare services by 86th Medical Group The 86th Aerospace Medical Squadron and the 86th Medical Operations Squadron became the 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron and the 86th Healthcare Operations Squadron Sept. 30. While an official ceremony took place in August commemorating this historic event, the physical changes are occurring in the new Fiscal Year. This change will affect the oversight of each squadron. The

86th OMRS will oversee all active duty military patients and operational functions, while the 86th HCOS will oversee all non-active duty patients, and the non-operational administrative and support functions. The 86th OMRS realignment will serve Airmen by enabling the 86th MDG to optimize the health of the most important weapon system — the Human Weapon System — and maintain a combat ready force. The 86th OMRS will incorporate the Flight &

Operational Medicine Clinic, the Base Operational Medicine Clinic, an Active Duty Primary Care Clinic, Dental, Bioenvironmental Engineering, Public Health, Optometry, Physical Therapy, and the Physical Examination Board Liaison Officer for Medical Evaluation Boards. The 86th HCOS will oversee the healthcare needs of enrolled family members and retirees. The 86 HCOS will incorporate the Family Health Clinic (non-active duty adults), Pediatrics,

Women’s Health, Immunizations, Ambulance Services, and Mental Health. Medical leaders say there will be no changes to personnel or their family’s enrollment at Ramstein Clinic during this transition. Both squadrons take medical care very seriously, with a shared goal of providing the highest quality, safest, and most effective patient-centered care. Anyone with additional questions is encouraged to contact TRICARE Enrollments at 4792273 (option 4).

USAFE – AFAFRICA colonel inducted to Society of American Military Engineers Academy of Fellows Tech. Sgt. Rachel Waller United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs Col. Anthony Higdon, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa deputy director of logistics, engineering and force protection, was inducted into the Society of American Military Engineers Academy of Fellows during a virtual ceremony on Sept. 16. The professional organization was established in 1920 following WWI to build leaders and lead collaboration among government and industry professionals. It aims to develop multi-disciplined solutions to national security infrastructure challenges. “It is an honor to be recognized, along with 35 of my colleagues around the world, for the volunteer time I’ve spent in the SAME and contributions I’ve made to the Society throughout my career,” said Higdon. “However, most importantly it is fulfilling to recognize that the Academy of Fellows selection committee believes I still have more to offer as a mentor and role model for SAME’s membership.”

According to the SAME website, the Society unites public and private sector individuals and organizations from across the architecture, engineering, construction, environmental and facility management, cyber security, contracting and acquisition disciplines. Higdon said he first joined the SAME as a young 2nd lieutenant when his first Air Force supervisor, Mike Shultz, brought him to a meeting at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. Over his career, Higdon volunteered his time as a post president at both Panama City, Florida and Kaiserslautern. Additionally, Higdon has served as

the European regional vice president. Throughout it all, he credits the volunteer members he met along the way for enabling his service by making those positions possible. The SAME Academy of Fellows recognizes those members who have rendered dedicated and outstanding service to the Society, military e n g i n e e ring, and the architecture, engineering and construction professions. “I have enjoyed the opportunities to mentor members and help develop future leaders for SAME and I am grateful to Col. (ret) Shawn Moore for nominating me to the Academy of

Fellows,” said Higdon. Another mentor Higdon credits is his former boss at the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, Joe Sciabica. “He made sure AFCEC was represented and making presentations at every SAME event possible,” recalled Higdon. “He really encouraged strong relationship building with our industry and joint engineer partners because it takes all of us to deliver the infrastructure solutions needed for national security.” As a Fellow, Higdon will continue to mentor the next generation of members in the 100-year-old Society. He has one last piece of wisdom to share with Airmen. “I would like to encourage everyone, regardless of career specialty, to make connections within your field to develop your professional skillset and credentials to better achieve your mission,” Higdon said. “It is important for all of us to learn from those more experienced around us, and more importantly as we gain experience to develop and mentor our future leaders.” Advertisement

Recommended holiday season mailing dates, mailing tips by Lionel Rivera U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa and Air Forces Africa Air Postal Squadron The 2020 recommended holiday season mailing dates for Air Force customers assigned to the European theater are: • USPS Retail Ground/Space Available Mail – Nov. 27 • First Class Mail/Priority Mail – Dec. 11 • Priority Mail Express Military Service – Dec. 18 These dates are for mail originating in Europe and destined to locations in the United States. Customers in the United States who mail to European APO/FPO/DPO addresses normally use similar recommended mailing dates. “U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa postal patrons should plan ahead and mail early to ensure letters, cards, and packages arrive to intended U.S. destinations in time for the holidays,” said Lionel Rivera, USAFE Air Postal Squadron Postal Operations Flight. Customers can avoid long lines at the post office when they mail early and can take advantage of using the cheaper, although slower, USPS Retail Ground/SAM service military post offices offer in Europe. “USPS Retail Ground/SAM service takes longer to arrive at the end destination and moves via ground once it arrives in the States,” said Mr. Rivera. Customers who want faster service should consider using priority mail or priority mail express military service if available. This costs more but these classes of mail get preferred and/or expedited service. Most mail accepted at military post offices in Europe is flown to the United States on commercial aircraft. Once mail arrives stateside, it's transported based on the service selected

and paid for. Customers should keep in mind that packages transiting through the mail stream are handled numerous times, and therefore proper packaging is very important. The following USPS mailing tips are provided to help ensure packages arrive safely and undamaged: The Box Choose a box with enough room for cushioning material around the contents. Sturdy paperboard or corrugated fiberboard boxes are best for weights up to 10 pounds. If reusing a box, cover up or mark-out any old labels and markings. USPS Provided Boxes Priority Mail Express and Priority Mail boxes are available at no cost to the customer at the post office for items sent using either of these services. Cushioning Place cushioning around your items. Close and gently shake the box to see whether there is enough padding. Place an extra address label with the delivery and return addresses inside the package to ensure it can be delivered in case the outside label becomes damaged or falls off. Sealing Tape the box shut and reinforce the seams with two-inch wide tape. Use clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape or paper tape. Liquids (Some host country restrictions apply. Check with your post office personnel) Nonflammable, nonhazardous liquids are acceptable to mail, if sealed inside a waterproof container. The outer container with the address label should also be strong and securely sealed. Mailers must mark the outer container of a mailpiece containing liquid to indicate the nature of the contents, and annoU.S. & GERMAN ATTORNEYS U.S. & GERMAN DIVORCES • SUPPORT ISSUES • EEO WILLS & PROBATE • EMPLOYMENT • PERSONAL INJURY MSPB • CONTRACTOR ISSUES • TAX ADVISORS

tate “this side up” on the package. Packages containing liquids need to be carefully packed to withstand the grueling transportation journey. Size The weight of each package cannot exceed 70 pounds. For customers planning to use Priority Mail Express Military Service or Priority Mail services for faster delivery, length plus girth (distance around the thickest part of the package) cannot exceed 108 inches. The total cannot exceed 130 inches when using USPS Retail Ground/SAM. Correct Address Using a complete and correct address is critical for timely delivery. To find the correct spelling of a city name and state abbreviation or to find a ZIP Code, visit www.usps.com. Print or type the delivery address parallel to the longest side of the package. Type or print clearly with a pen or permanent marker so that the address is legible from an arm’s length away. Return Address Print or type the address in the upper left corner on the same side of the package as the delivery address. USPS Extra Services Extra services can provide additional protection and peace of mind. • Adult Signature - Requires the signature of someone 21 years of age or older at the recipient's address. • Certificate of Mailing - Provides evidence of mailing. • Certified Mail - Provides proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. • Insured Mail - Provides coverage against loss or damage up to $5,000. Fee based on value of item. • Registered Mail (service not available at all locations) - Provides maximum security. Includes proof

of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Insurance can be added up to $50,000. Fee based on value of item. USPS Tracking - Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Free with select services. Signature Confirmation - Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery and the name of the person who signed for the item. Customers can request a printed copy of the signature. Return Receipt - Provides a postcard or electronic notification with the date of delivery and recipient signature. Restricted Delivery - Confirms that only a specified person, or authorized agent, will receive a piece of mail. Special Handling — Fragile - Is a domestic extra service offered to customers for a fee to enhance their shipping options, but does not insure the item against loss or damage.

Customs Declaration Form All mail originating outside of the United States is subject to customs examination. Mailers are responsible for accurately completing USPS customs forms when mailing packages containing dutiable goods to the United States.  Mailers are also required to certify the information provided is correct and the items do not contain any dangerous articles, or articles prohibited by legislation or by postal or customs regulations. Recent USPS policy change derived from Global Trade Compliance requirements resulted in USPS phasing out handwritten customs declaration forms. This means that pre-printed, hard copy PS Form 2976, PS Form 2976-A, and PS Form 2976-B customs declaration forms are no longer accepted.

Results – Guaranteed. At H&R Block, we stand behind our work. If we make a mistake, we will pay any additional interest and penalties. Plus, if the IRS should call you in for an audit, we will explain your audit notice and the documentation you need to provide, at no extra cost. We have experts on hand year around to help you. Customers can avoid waiting in longer lines at post office finance windows if they complete an online customs declaration form using the USPS website prior to presenting packages for mailing at the APO. In addition, some post offices will make available or offer a separate, expedited mail acceptance window as an incentive for customers who arrive at the post office with online, pre-printed USPS electronic customs declarations. Customers have several options when completing required electronic customs declarations using the USPS. com website: Option 1: Customers can chose the USPS Click-N-Ship feature to establish an account, complete their customs declaration and pay for their mailing using one of several USPS approved credit cards. Option 2: Customers can print a customs declaration at home on the USPS website without establishing an account and then pay at the postal finance window when presenting their parcels and packages for mailing. Option 3: Customers can use the customer work station (if available) at the APO to go online and complete a customs declaration before presenting mail pieces at the postal finance window. Option 4: Postal patrons who do not present articles for mailing with an online declaration can still mail their packages using the hard copy PS Form 2976-R, USPS Customs Declaration and Dispatch Note declaration form. However, the accepting finance mail clerk must enter the information from the PS Form 2976-R into the Customs Border Protection Manifest system via the USPS Point of Sale retail terminal with the customer present, as clarifying questions may be required to ensure that PS Form 2976-R contains accurate and complete data to complete the mailing transaction. This will result in longer customer waiting times and longer lines at the post office finance windows. Contact the local installation postmaster for additional information on customs form requirements and for advice on the best service to use based on your mailing needs.

Postal employees urge early holiday mailing, ask for volunteers

A Soldier mails several packages to the United States from the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Postal Services Center in Kaiserslautern. Postmasters are urging customers to mail holiday packages earlier than usual due to COVID-19.

As with many things in life right now, the COVID-19 pandemic is also affecting mail service around the world. U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz postal employees are expecting a busier-than-normal holiday mail season. They want two things for the holidays: Customers to mail their packages early and volunteers to help out in the garrison post offices. “I think many customers have noticed a slowdown in mail from the U.S. all over Europe over the last few months,” said Justin Price, Supervisory Postmaster. “The pandemic is slowing everything down. It may be because postal employees are out sick, businesses are slowed down because of pandemic precautions or whatever.” Price encourages those mail-

ing packages back to the U.S. to mail early this year. “We’re seeing some packages take a month or more to get here from the States, depending on where they’re being mailed from,” he said. One thing is for sure: the 65 garrison employees and 10 local nationals working in the garrison mailrooms will be working under an avalanche of holiday boxes coming in and going out of garrison mailrooms. Price said volunteers can help ease the burden and move packages into, and out of, the facilities faster. “Volunteering in a mail room is a great opportunity. You meet people from all walks of life and all ranks,” said Natalia Acosta, postal employee. “You learn something new. I had no postal experience but I came in and volunteered, made my own schedule, and I was able to learn from, and work with, a great team.” Acosta started out volunteering in the Rhine Ordnance Barracks post office, then

applied for an opening and has been working in the post office almost two years. Any service member, government civilian or family member who wants to volunteer can walk into any garrison post office and ask to volunteer. “Volunteer help is welcome throughout the year, not just during the holidays,” said Price. “It’s funny, I think with the pandemic, we’re seeing a lot more online shopping than usual. Mail has been constantly coming in…more than we’re used to in what are normally slow parts of the year.” Potential volunteers should go to Army OneSource https:// www.myarmyonesource.com/ and register. Volunteer hours are tracked through that web site. “After that, just go in and see the postmaster at the post office where they want to volunteer,” Price said. “There’s some documentation and a little training and then we put them to work.”

Trenten Collins, 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron Joint Terminal Attack Controller, contacts other Tactical Air Control Parties using long-haul communications capabilities at Alzey Dropzone, Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Germany, Sept. 30. Collins and his teammates performed an airborne insertion into the dropzone before setting up their communications equipment. The training provided the Airmen an opportunity to test capabilities for contingency operations within the European theater.

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs FLÖRSHEIM-DALSHEIM — Airmen assigned to units within the 4th Air Support Operations Group and 435th Contingency Response Group conducted a joint airborne insertion over Alzey Dropzone, Sept. 30.

The training allowed Joint Terminal Attack Controllers, Defenders, and other air support and contingency response Airmen to hone the skills needed to conduct operations anywhere in the European theater. “What we did today is a capability we can provide that enables Agile Combat Employment on the front end,” said Lt. Col. Justin

Banez, 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron commander. “We’re able to get JTACs into an austere area, establish a potential airhead and report on potential targets, which then enables the follow-on forces to come in.” An airhead is a designated area used to continue air operations in contingent environments, which is exactly what the 435th Air Ground

A U.S. Airman assigned to the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing touches down at Alzey Dropzone, Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Germany, Sept. 30. Airborne insertion is a method commonly used by the 435th AGOW to provide contingency response operations throughout the European theater.

Operations Wing is trained to do. Practicing this capability allows the 435th AGOW to sharpen their ability to integrate their Airmen’s skill sets, providing a more cohesive force. “We leverage this capability to assure our NATO partners and joint partners that we can get anywhere within the European theater and provide a credible deterrent,”

Banez said. “Today’s exercise was a fine example of being able to leverage capability across U.S. Air Forces in Europe, bringing together the 37th Airlift Squadron, who provided us the lift capability, and then the air-ground integrators from the 435th AGOW.” For contingency response and Tactical Air Control Party Airmen, airborne insertion is simply a stepping stone for operations. The real job happens once they touch down. “What we’re doing today is testing our long-range communications and seeing how fast we can set up after our airborne operation,” said Staff Sgt. Trenten Collins, 2nd ASOS JTAC. “Jumping in is just one way to get to where we’re going. Today we jumped in, hit the ground, and had our high frequency antenna up and longhaul communications with TACPs from across the world.” To get the most out of a training opportunity, these units ensure they maximize their time in the field. “We always combine our training missions,” Collins said. “We try to knock out as many training objectives as possible. If we’re going to do a jump, we’re definitely going to try and test out our combat capabilities. Today was a success.” By continuously practicing their ability to execute anywhere at any time, the 435th AGOW ensures the U.S. Air Force is both lethal and ready.

Medical Airman seeks leadership opportunities, earns Airlifter of the Week Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An 86th Medical Group Airman was selected as Airlifter of the Week for his role in managing the 86th Medical Group COVID-19 screening area at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 24. Tech. Sgt. Pedro De Los Santos, 86th MDG COVID-19 operations senior enlisted leader, excelled by leading a group of augmentees as they provided screening for patients prior to entering the clinic, operating drive-in testing for COVID-19, and the pharmacy tent. “Tech. Sgt. De Los Santos has proven time and time again he is a leader not only in his field, but also in leading the medical group’s COVID operations management,” said Senior Master Sgt. Gauna, 86th Healthcare Operations Squadron superintendent. De Los Santos sought out new opportunities to lead Airmen, which is why he was selected to lead COVID-19 operations for the 86th MDG. “I was looking for a challenge and my leadership found one for me,” De Los Santos said. “They needed someone with experience running a flight. I had that experience and I’m glad I get to interact with my fellow medics.” Before managing the COVID19 operations, De Los Santos was the physical therapy flight chief where he focused on patient rehabilitation. “By design, PT technicians are not involved in medical patient triage or sick call on a day to day basis,” Gauna said. “But De Los Santos took the responsibility of being the COVID-19 operations senior enlisted leader and utilized his strategic talent and abilities to ensure operational efficiency out in the tents. Thus far, since he became the SEL, COVID-19 operations flow is at its smoothest. “There was no doubt in our minds he is most deserving to be recognized,” Gauna continued. “This Airman had taken on COVID operational challenges that were presented to him even though his primary AFSC is mostly about patient rehabilitation.” “I might be the individual recognized but this really is a team effort,” De Los Santos said. “There’s a lot of Airmen doing the heavy lifting.”

De Los Santos is responsible for a team of augmentees who screen patients before allowing entry to the 86th MDG to limit potential exposure or spread of COVID.

Joint multinational exercise validates aerial, ground force integration in Eastern Europe

SZYMANY, Poland — Service members from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S Air Forces Africa, along with five other NATO countries conducted Astral Knight 20, a joint multinational air defense exercise, Sept. 12-25 near Szymany, Poland. Astral Knight 20 was designed to enhance interoperability among NATO allies and partners to increase readiness through the integration of land component

air and missile defense capabilities. Astral Knight 20 took place in various locations across Europe. Air defense forces and the Air Operations Center were located in Poland, while aerial and mission command elements simultaneously operated from Italy and Germany. Service members from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and the United States were involved with Astral Knight 20. “The purpose of this exercise is establishing datalink architecture and utilizing different systems to understand our capacity and capability,” said Brig. Gen.

Gregory Brady, Commander of the 10th AAMDC, during a Brussels Media Hub engagement. “When you build these different systems together, you can have four or five different physical languages, different mission command elements, different interceptors, but your goal is to establish one single integrated air picture to understand early warning and building upon that situational awareness from a command and control perspective.” The exercise combined both aerial and ground assets from a joint combined air picture. Aerial assets incorporated a variety of U.S. Air Force and Polish Air Force aircraft, including elements of a theatre bomber task force. Ground assets included air defense assets such as the 10th AAMDC’s Patriot missile systems and Poland’s 3rd Air Defense Brigade’s SA-3D ground-based missile system. Training in the Baltic region is aimed to enhance flexibility and interoperability in the interest of strengthening combined response capabilities and demonstrating international resolve. The threat scenarios involved a variety of aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, and tactical ballistic missiles with live flyover, simulations and injects to more effectively prepare and maintain cohesion during any joint multinational conflict in U.S. Army Europe. Maj. Gen. Derek France, Director of Operations for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S Air Forces Africa, explained the

reason behind building complex scenarios during these exercises during a Brussels Media Hub engagement. “We have forces that are capable of engaging each of those, and when we talk about command and control, which is one of the focus areas of this. It’s about putting the right force to defend against the right threat and the right place at the right time,” said France. The air defense units involved in this exercise had to work together in Szymany, Poland in a joint multinational environment to defeat and deter the threats. The success of this interoperability was due largely to the strong trust these units have in one another, which comes thanks to the relationships they have built and maintained. “Training alongside our joint partners and NATO allies is critical,” said Capt. Mellorie Clinton, Delta Battery Commander assigned to 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery. “Our ability to operate in a real world combat situation relies on so many of our allies. We make sure we train with our air defense counterparts consistently. Training solidifies our interoperability.” Clinton explained that exercises such as Astral Knight 20 provide units with a unique opportunity to work effectively together and overcome cultural barriers. “It is incredible to build on past and present relationships with our allies,” said Clinton. “For example, Capt. Bartosz Rozek, Group Commander in the 3-7 Air

Defense Squadron from Poland and I went to Air Defense Captains Career Course (ADA CCC) together at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. This unique opportunity has allowed us to work more effectively and speak the same tactical and technical language.” Capt. Rozek also commented on the benefit of training in a combined environment like Captains Career Course, and how it benefited the Astral Knight 20 exercise for air defense forces at Szymany. “ADA CCC gives a one of a kind opportunity to create both professional and personal bonds that pay off during multinational exercises like Astral Knight 20. Thanks to that experience, allied officers such as myself have more of a shared understanding and can easily participate in discussion and join all efforts,” Rozek said. True interoperability is comprised of three things: people, processes and equipment. Astral Knight 20 was an exercise designed to combine all of those things effectively to create a joint multinational air picture with the ability to defend and deter against various threats. “All of our NATO allies have different capabilities that provide a multi-layered approach. There isn’t one interceptor that can defeat all threats,” said Brig. Gen. Brady. “So the ability to synchronize the capabilities, understand what our allies have, and then build this architecture really leads to readiness – and readiness matters.”

Photos by Katelyn Poppe Parent-Teacher-Student Association President 2020'21

Landstuhl Elementary School PTSA hosted their first event of the school year on Sept. 23. Fun was had by all at "Chalk Up the Night!" The evening's festivities included a live DJ and a Zumba instructor to keep everyone on their feet. Families used their creative sides to decorate the school's red top with colorful, funny, and inspiring chalk drawings. Even with the questionable weather, they had a great turn out, and they're looking forward to more exciting events in the future.

Page 18 by MilitaryinGermany.com In many ways, Jossgrund is similar to most any little village in Germany. It’s small, tidy, tranquil and prosperous. You’ll find red roofs, a church steeple, a gasthaus. You can drive a small winding road through it and be gone in two minutes. But Jossgrund — and the surrounding area — holds something special. Look a little more closely, and Jossgrund almost becomes a metaphor for the German love of nature. Located near the border of the German states of Hessen and Bavaria, Jossgrund offers exploration, plenty of fresh air, and a chance to get off the beaten path. And, in the spirit of “J,” Jossgrund is also a jumping-off point for exploring a brilliant natural environment. The one thing you have to see: Hessen Spessart nature park The Spessart is a heavily forested range of small, old mountains that stretch from northern Bavaria into Southern Hessen. Stepping into the Spessart is like visiting an ancient, almost archetypal version of Germany. Autobahns and large cities disappear, replaced by vast stretches of what feels like wellcultivated wilderness. Parts of the

forest are populated by hundredsyear old oak trees, towering beech trees and deep silence. From Jossgrund, you can plunge deep into the heart of the Spessart. Hiking and biking options abound along excellent trails through diverse landscapes. Beautiful views are available during every season, especially on hilltops that stretch to over 500 meters high. During an era when outside diversions are almost a must, the

Hessen Spessart Nature Park will see you through. Go to Jossgrund, then get lost Jossgrund also provides strong opportunities for those who love car or motorcycle touring. The Spessart stretches roughly 100 kilometers from north to south, and beautiful sights can be found along the way. Highlights include Mespelbrunn Castle (pictured above), about 50 minutes south

of Jossgrund, or the beautiful halftimbered buildings of Miltenberg further south on the banks of the river Main. Better yet, you can plunge into winding roads that snake through the heart of the Spessart. Start in Jossgrund, and then lose yourself. Stop to hike or grab a bite to eat along the way. But just take the road and see where it goes. Sometimes it’s the best way to find what you’re looking for.

Getting There By car, Jossgrund is about an hour from Wiesbaden, two hours from Kaiserslautern, and 2.5 hours from Stuttgart. Check the Deutsche Bahn website for train information. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies, when it comes to travel.

Beyond I-Spy: Keeping it fun for kids in the car

Photo by Monkey Business Images / Shutterstock.com

by Lisa C. Helenius Contributing writer Taking a road trip? En route to school? Hanging out in the parking lot? Why not make time in the car an opportunity to connect as a family? Let’s turn off the devices for a bit and kick it old school! For the littlest ones • Songs. No, you probably shouldn’t sing “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall,” but singing songs with repetition and basic counting sure does the trick! Think, “5 Little Monkeys” or “5 Little Speckled Frogs.” Classics are encouraged – try “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Old McDonald,” too! • Games. Do you know the game “Freeze”? Even tiny kiddos in car seats can dance and freeze to a favorite song that you play and pause. • Animal noises. Take turns naming an animal and their corresponding sound. Snake! Hisssss! Cow! Mooo! • Big or Little? Name an object and your child has to say if it’s big or little. Airplane? Big! Peanut? Little! • Colors. You name a bunch of items: banana, lemon, sunflower and your child says the color: Yellow! Or try it with shapes.

Elementary aged passengers • Would you Rather? This one’s a game changer: “Would you rather have pizza for breakfast or ice cream for dinner?” “Would you rather be 10 feet tall or 10 inches tall?” The possibilities are endless! • The Alphabet Game. This one just keeps going and going. You go around the car and pack a bag for a trip, repeating what the previous person packed via alphabetical order. “I’m going on a trip and I’ll pack an Apple, a Boomerang, a Cat”… “I’m going on a trip and I’ll pack an Apple, a Boomerang, a Cat and a Dress”. See if you can build up to Z. • Build a Story. Everyone takes a turn telling a part of a story and then the next person builds on what the previous person said. “I was playing in the back yard and I saw a unicorn under the trampoline.” Next person, “The unicorn’s name was Larry and he was wearing gold boots and huge sunglasses.” On and on it goes! Tweens and teens Real conversation! You have a captive audience! This is your

chance to have an actual conversation in a relaxed way. Key tips for success include: • All cell phones in the center console, please. • Now, ask Open Ended Questions. Not: “How was school today?” It will very likely get that typical response of “fine.” Make your inquiry more specific, like, “Who performed in the assembly today?” or “What was the most interesting part of science class?” • If your teen or tween is sharing a story, validate and empathize, but don’t react. For example, “Oh, you must have felt so annoyed – I’m sorry to hear it,” instead of “Are you kidding? I would be so annoyed!” • Don’t insert yourself into their story or you’ll likely lose the momentum of the conversation. • 20 Questions is always a crowd pleaser, especially if the goal is to stump mom or dad. Perhaps with a reward of stopping for ice cream if any kid can beat a parent? Happy travels! And, don’t forget the snacks!
