The third iteration of exercise Operation Varsity wrapped up Sept. 27, after an event-filled week of training. Base agencies on Ramstein and Vogelweh Military Complex fired on all cylinders to push their Airmen throughout the week. Operation Varsity 19-03 extended beyond the KMC by including the 86th Airlift Wing’s geographically separated units in Spain, Portugal and Belgium. “The Airmen here and at Morón AB, Lajes Field, and Chièvres AB did a great job reacting to scenarios that test our abilities and readiness,” said Col. October 4, 2019 Squadron, the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron, and the 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Delivery Company. Each unit has a hand in building partnerships and enhancing interoperability with the Bulgarian air force. Capt. Roberts emphasized that building that relation-
ship is the key to success at Thracian Fall. “Despite the language barrier, they’ve been incredibly helpful and accommodating,” said Roberts. “Even when we’ve had last-minute requests, they’ve bent over backward to help us. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the exercise.”

Plan and practice your escape! by Kaiserslautern Military Community Fire & Emergency Services Flight The KMC Fire & Emergency Services Flight is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® —the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years — to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” The campaign works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. NFPA statistics show that in 2017 U.S. fire departments responded to 357,000 home structure fires. These fires caused 2,630 fire deaths and 10,600 fire injuries. On average, seven people died in a fire in a home per day during 2012 to 2016. “These numbers show that home fires continue to
pose a significant threat to safety,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out. While NFPA and the KMC F&ES are focusing on home fires, these messages apply to virtually any location. “Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go,” said Assistant Fire Chief Jason Haddock. “No matter where you are, look for available exits. National Cybersecurity Awareness Month kicks off by 86th Airlift Wing Wing Cybersecurity Office The 16th annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month began Oct. 1. Spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security, NCSAM 2019 seeks to “ensure every American has the resources needed to stay safer and more secure online, while increasing the resiliency of the Nation during cyberthreats.” According to DHS, cybersecurity is our shared responsibility. Every individual has a role to play, and cybersecurity is not merely a concern during the duty day. For assigned personnel and their dependents living in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, the many travel opportunities living in Germany offers poses additional challenges to staying safe online. Here are four best practices as we enter into a busier period of travel as the end of the year approaches: 1. Use Strong Passwords — Change any default passwords on your
mobile device to ones that would be difficult for someone to guess. Use different passwords for different programs, sites, and devices. Do not choose options that allow your device to remember your passwords. Consider using a password vault app on your mobile device. 2. Review Privacy and Security Permissions — Be sure to review and understand the privacy and security permissions for any websites or apps where you share your personal information. When using social media sites, you can often customize your privacy settings. Make your privacy settings strict so that only people you know or approve can view your information. 3. Be Careful What You Post and When — Wait to post pictures from trips and events so that people do not know where to find you. Posting where you are could also notify others that you are away
from home, leaving your home vulnerable. Additionally, many social media platforms allow you to check in and broadcast your location, or automatically adding your location to photos and posts. Consider adjusting these settings as well. 4. Exercise Caution When Using Public Wi-Fi Networks — Before you connect to any public wireless hotspot — like on an airplane or in an airport, hotel, train or bus station, or café — be sure to confirm the name of the network and login procedures with appropriate staff to ensure that the network is legitimate. Cybercriminals can easily create a similarly named network hoping that users will overlook which network is the legitimate one. Most hotspots are not secure and do not encrypt the information you send over the Internet leaving it vulnerable to online criminals. Avoid online shopping, banking,
and sensitive work that requires passwords or credit card information while using public Wi-Fi. Finally, remember that there is no delete button on the Internet. Even if you delete your content, someone could have saved it or taken a screenshot. Before posting, ask yourself: “Am I comfortable with sharing this information with the whole world?” Practicing cybersecurity is an everyday task and requires relatively minimal effort to safeguard yourself and your families. Over the course of the month, the 86th AW, Wing Cybersecurity Office will be presenting material in line with this year’s overarching themes of “Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT,” and will focus on key areas including citizen privacy, consumer devices, and e-commerce security. has changed and, to become a competitive acquisition system, the Air Force needs to change with it, said Dr. Will Roper, assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition, technology and logistics, at the Air Force Association’s 2019 Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Sept. 16. “To become a more competitive acquisition system, the Air Force needs to be aware of trends in technology,” Roper said. “The world is changing. We have to change with it. The key is to decide which technology will be successful and being able to act on those trends with a system that is leaner, meaner and faster than our opponents.” Roper said he notices three trends within Air Force acquisition that need to “go viral” if we want to function like a successful technology company — evolving at the speed of relevance. Deft Air Force The deft Air Force trend refers to speeding up the acquisition process, making it smarter and more agile. Section 804, an authority granted by Congress, allows the Air Force to accelerate that process and helps empower program managers to make acquisition decisions faster.
Air Force leadership set a goal of shaving 100 years off acquisition program timelines with the new authority and met that goal in less than a year. “So we’ve reached a hundred years; that’s a great goal,” he said. “We’ll try to reach 150 by this time next year. It becomes harder and harder the longer we go…the difficult work of using the scalpel instead of the hatchet.” Faster acquisition processes also mean expanded industry partnerships. Programs like Air Force Pitch Days allow the Air Force to award sameday contracts with small businesses, often going from contract award to paying a business within an average of 15 minutes. The Air Force plans to accomplish a total of 13 Pitch Days before the end of this year. Innovation in sustainment is another key to building a deft Air Force. Predictive maintenance, or predicting aircraft part failures before they happen rather than responding when they do happen, is an example of improving the old way of doing business. Additionally, the Air Force is capitalizing on 3D printing to save time and money. While everyone is encouraged to have a plan if they drink, there really is no reason anyone under the influence should get behind the wheel. AADD can pick you up if your plans fall through on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. “Our mission statement is: No DUIs, No Excuses,” said Tech. Sgt. Julian Shipman, KMC AADD scheduler. “Our main purpose is to assist when a plan falls through. We will pick you up, and make sure you get home safe.” The Armed Forces Against Drunk
Driving have been doing just that. Since extending their hours, reports of DUIs within the KMC have decreased by over half. AADD strives to continue to do their part in lowering the number of DUIs in the area, especially with the upcoming festivals and holidays. AADD is free to all service members and dependents with a military ID. To be picked up call 01525 1723356, and one of the volunteers for AADD will come get you and your vehicle. Single female callers will get picked up by a female driver, and single male callers will be picked up by a male driver. Individuals can be picked up within 15 kilometers of Ramstein Air Base, and taken home up to 30 kilometers away. There are no repercussions for using this program, and it is fully endorsed by leadership.

Air Force mandates dedicated space for nursing mothers by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs A new lactation policy, released in an Air Force Guidance Memorandum dated Aug. 15, requires units to provide nursing mothers access to a lactation room. The policy enables commanders to support nursing mothers by outlining procedures and requirements for establishing a private, secure (lockable from the inside) and sanitary location for the purpose of breastfeeding and/ or expressing breast milk. “This policy gap came to our attention from the grassroots level. Our job here is to do what we can to make it easier for Airmen to serve,”
said Christy Nolta, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for reserve affairs and Airman readiness. “Women shouldn’t feel like they must choose between serving and being a mother. A small policy tweak can actually make a difference to our Airmen. It adds up, improves quality of life and supports retention efforts across the service. We remain really focused on breaking more barriers to make continuing to serve an easy choice.” A lactation room, comparable to a break room, should be a comfortable and welcoming place for nursing mothers. According to the policy, lactation rooms will be located in the immediate vicinity of the workplace
and will include a table, a place to sit, electrical outlets and have comfortable temperatures and adequate lighting. The rooms are also required to be near a source of hot and cold water for handwashing and sanitizing breast pumps and parts. “We received a lot of feedback from nursing mothers about having to pump or nurse in less than ideal facilities,” said Maj. Alea Nadeem, Air Force Women’s Initiative Team chief. “They were having to pump in bathrooms, locker rooms and borrowed offices, and this sometimes discourages new mothers from continuing to express milk.” The policy also provides guidance for lactation breaks. Supervisors will
provide nursing mothers, both military and civilian, with reasonable lactation breaks for at least one year postpartum. According to AFI 44-102, Medical Care Management, supervisors should allow 15-30 minutes every 3-4 hours to pump breast milk. “The Air Force Women’s Initiative Team works to remove barriers through policy for Airmen so they can continue to serve successfully and use common sense approaches to outdated policies,” Nadeem said. More than 60 Army housing managers from installations around the world participated in the inaugural housing executive course hosted by Installation Management Command in San Antonio, Aug. 19-23. Harald Kastner, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz chief of housing, attended the symposium on behalf of the garrison. “When the housing crisis broke, IMCOM talked with all of the Army housing chiefs by phone and told us there was going to be a meeting and we were required to attend,” Kastner said. “It went very well. Sixty-six housing managers attended 36 different classes and it went all day, every day.” The classes during the weeklong symposium focused on traditional military-owned housing, privatized housing and barracks, with many group discussions, demonstrations and hands-on learning opportunities, according to Kastner. “It was eye-opening,” said Kastner, “and we said we can do a little bit more of this or a little bit more of that. said we need to educate, communicate and be more open.” This housing manager training was a year in the making. Kastner said this was not a wine-and-dine event. Guestspeakers ranged from general officers to lawyers to current garrison commanders and the IMCOM command sergeant major.
This was the first symposium Kastner has been to and he said he brought back great ideas to share with Greg Williams, Director of Public Works. Williams said making residents happy with 60-year-old homes can be tough. “The standard today that we have
is not the future Army standard,” Williams said. “The only thing that is going to improve our customer satisfaction rating is new homes.” Groundbreaking for new homes in Baumholder’s Wetzel Housing is scheduled to begin in Fiscal Year 2022 and should be done by 2025. That is expected to be the first 72 dwelling units. Those units will be townhomes located in the “lower” Wetzel area. The Army has actually purchased a parcel of land to put some of the new housing on. Wetzel will grow to more than 550 units with a mixture of townhomes, new apartments and improvements to existing dwellings. Col. Angela Stanton, 86th AW Inspector General director of readiness. Stanton said this iteration of exercise Operation Varsity was graded, which meant that U.S. Air Forces in Europe inspectors closely monitored how Ramstein planned, executed, and evaluated readiness. “I’d argue we grade ourselves all the time, as we try to get better as the world’s best wing and the world’s best base,” said Husemann.
Kaiserslautern American During the exercise, several of the 86th AW’s geographically separated units responded to simulated perimeter breaches, fuel contamination, cyberattacks, and receiving forces and aircraft. “The purpose of Operation Varsity 19-03 was used to evaluate, measure, and report the ability of units to generate, employ, and sustain contingencies or force sustainment missions in the most likely consequential environment, maximizing combat effectiveness and the ability to survive and operate under stressful conditions,” said Stanton. Exercise Operation Varsity 19-03 may have come to an end, but the fourth iteration is scheduled to be held in December. As with previous exercises, announcements will be made prior to ensure personnel are aware of real world degraded services and delays on base.

Ramstein will hold its 23rd annual farmers’ market Sunday. Mayor Ralf Hechler will officially open the event at 10:30 a.m. at the Congress Center Ramstein. Immediately following is a Thanksgiving Service, also taking place at the congress center.
This year, a record number of 85 vendors will offer their merchandise. Nanstein Castle and hike to Baerenloch pond. Of course, this can also be done in reverse order. By the way, a culinary beer hike is only available in our beautiful Western Palatinate, which means a unique event. The hike extends over a length of 8 km, and visitors can expect a varied
offer at six stations. The topic “beer” is obviously in the spotlight. At each of the individual rest stops, the caterers also serve beer delicacies, such as grandma’s beer goulash, bread dumplings with beer sauce and BBQ ham in dark beer sauce. The event takes place on Saturday from 11 a.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
New this year is Butchery Hess with their tasty products from their own production and three more beer stations with international beer specialties. Every visitor is encouraged to buy a beer pass for eight euro at the respective starting points (Burg Nanstein or Baerenloch pond). This automatically represents the admission ticket to an individual beer tasting. At each station you get the tasting glass 0.3l for 2.50 euro filled with beers of the participating breweries. The beer glass is also a great souvenir and supports the financing of the event and musical program. Parking is available on the public parking areas in Landstuhl (Stadthalle, Alter Markt, etc.) and Kindsbach (Baerenloch pond, Dorfgemeinschaftshaus). Ramstein takes down SHAPE in tennis; Kaiserslautern sweeps Spangdahlem by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Despite spitting skies and soggy turf on their home courts, Ramstein sloshed its way to wins in both the boys and girls sections of a dual tennis match with SHAPE Saturday. The girls won all nine matches and the boys won six. The most tense nail biter of the day was the number one boys doubles contest between Ramstein’s Colin Kent and Troy Bohne and SHAPE’s Joe Cates-Beier and Alex Kiss. The matchup was so closely contested that they needed tie breakers in the first two sets (RHS won the first, SHAPE the

second) and a super tiebreaker to take the third set 10-7 for a Royals victory. Sophomore Kassianna Von Eicken continued her dominance with a two-set shutout of Andrea Ruiz in girls number one singles. In doubles, Isabella Guzaldo joined Douglas Allison for the first time.
“It took all of the first set to really bond,” said Coach Alfredo Rios. “In the second set, they [Guzaldo and Allison] played as if they have been together the entire season. It was fun to watch the two players develop a doubles connection on the court.” In Spangdahlem, Kaiserslautern’s number one singles players Aiva Schmitz and William Alsing coasted to victories, paving the way for a perfect 18-0 day for the Raiders. Alsing won 6-0, 6-0. Alexander Brunk and Olaitan Powdar both defeated their opponents 8-0 in the boys while Urua Shiozawa did the same in the girls. Powdar teamed with Devon Holly to stay undefeated in number one dou-
bles. Katherine Loftus and Rebecca Moon earned the girls number one doubles title in straight sets. “We are happy with the progress. We have a solid boys line up in seeds one through six, and several first year players on the girls team,” said Coach Gabriell Horton. “This was a very good weekend for developing our team. We had players seeing their first varsity action and others scoring their first varsity wins which helps confidence and progress going forward.” Ramstein and Kaiserslautern are both off this weekend, then will face each other at Kaiserslautern next Saturday.

The Raiders are tied with Ramstein for second place behind undefeated Stuttgart, setting the stage for a meaningful matchup with the rival Royals next Friday at home. He took one back for the second straight week, but this time it was not enough as the Royals fell to Stuttgart 37-17 on the damp, chilly Royals home field on Senior Night. The other Ramstein scores were a short touchdown blast and a field goal by Matthew Reismann. Stuttgart used a punishing running game and mixed in clutch passes to keep
the Royals on their heels. Defensively, the pass rush gave Ramstein quarterback Carl Norman little time to set up and often flushed him from the pocket. The Pirates speed and athleticism also stretched out and stuffed anything the Royals tried to run to the outside. A long Pirate touchdown run on the first possession of the second half put the brakes on any Royals comeback plans. Stuttgart is 4-0 and the Royals are 2-2, both setbacks at the hands of the Pirates. Baumholder had a week off. All teams have a bye this week, giving them a chance to heal their dings, bumps and bruises.

The Royals lost to Vilseck in five tightly contested sets and then fell to Stuttgart in four. Vilseck split its two matches and Lakenheath lost twice. Stuttgart won twice and is currently the solid favorite as the teams head towards the European championships the last weekend of October in the KMC. We will have another chance to play at our homecoming in three weeks and we will have to step up our game. We look forward to the rematch and we are looking forward having the bye weekend to get all of our girls healthy.” In Wiesbaden, Kaiserslautern used its usual balanced attack to take its match against Black Forest Academy in straight sets. The second matchup was with the host Warriors and the Raiders fell in four sets. The Raiders were the victims of a controversial call that, if it went their way, would have
tied it and swung the momentum. After a long conference between the referees, the call went against them and the Warriors served for point to take the set. “We won the third set and had opportunities in the fourth yet it slipped away from us,” said Coach Aaron Scalise. “While I am disappointed in a couple of calls, I also believe we cannot put ourselves in a position where a difficult call impacts our game. Wiesbaden was able to capitalize on our mistakes, and thus proved to be the better team. We need to play better.” In Spangdahlem, young but very talented Baumholder pushed its record to 4-2 by defeating Ansbach and falling to the hosts. The Buccaneers were winless last season.

Cross country: Former teammates Parsells, Mackie take first, second by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Griffen Parsells has a plan. “I want to win the European championships in Baumholder and I want to set the record doing it,” the Kaiserslautern junior said after winning the Ramstein cross country meet at Seewoog on Saturday. Parsells used his long, loping stride to clock a 16:50 on the wet course, outlasting former Kaiserslautern teammate and current Ramstein runner Conner Mackie. Parsells and Mackie have the two top times in Europe this fall. Parsells’ personal best is 16:34 and the European record he has in his sights is 16:15. Ramstein’s Gideon Zaugg shattered his personal record and finished sixth. Teammate Ben Brewster finished eighth with his personal best. In the girl’s division, there were two classes – McKinley Fielding and everyone else. The Stuttgart junior led from start to finish and demolished
the course record by 30 seconds, finishing a minute and a half ahead of the pack. Fielding has a legitimate chance at breaking the European record at Baumholder on October 19. Ramstein’s Nadia Rahman took fourth and Kaiserslautern’s Piper Parsells finished ninth. Baumholder’s top performers were Jacob Cruz in the boys’ and Madison Brech, and Ashley Delgado in the girls’. Both Stuttgart’s boys and girls took six of the top ten spots for the team titles. Wiesbaden was second in girls followed by Ramstein and Kaiserslautern, who were separated by one point, then Baumholder. Ramstein and Kaiserslautern were second and third in the boys, Baumholder seventh. All teams are off this weekend. Kaiserslautern hosts a contest involving Baumholder next Saturday while Ramstein is at Stuttgart. It will be the final tune up before the European championships.

It took a tie breaker to decide the boys champion a rainy, cold and sloppy four-team golf match in Wiesbaden between the host Warriors, Ramstein, Vilseck and Kaiserslautern on Sept. 26. The Royals won the event with 114 points, followed by Wiesbaden with 95. Kaiserslautern was third. In a previous duel at the Ramstein course, the Royals’ Ben Todman edged Wiesbaden’s Clayton Shenk by a point and Ramstein teammate Chris Angeles by two. This time, in the rematch, Shenk and Todman tied, but Shenk took the title because of the tiebreaker. In order to break a tie, the score on the highest handicapped (hardest) hole is used. They tied on the two hardest holes, so the scores on the third hardest hole were used, and Shenk was a stroke better on that hole. Both golfers had 34 points with Angeles a point back. Kaiserslautern’s Matthias Perrin tied for sixth. “Chris has never played as well as he is playing the last two weeks,” said
Ramstein Coach Nathan Brewster. “We are going to need him to keep it up at the Euros.” Todman, Shenk and Angeles will continue their rivalry at the European championships on Oct. 9 and 10 in Wiesbaden. Vilseck’s Anniston Fees won the girl’s competition, six points behind Todman and Shenk.
