Wiesbaden community celebrates Army’s 246th birthday

The community was treated to a special cake, hot dogs and drinks provided by the United Service Organizations and athletic events for all ages.

which was set up in front of the Military Welfare and Recreation Gym on Clay Kaserne.

Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, the commanding general of U.S. Army Europe and Africa gave a speech to help set the mood for the celebration.

“The U.S. Army has changed the world,” he said, because of World War I and especially because of World War II. “Because of our actions

then, we are the most powerful Army in the world,”he said.He went on to emphasize that we are all part of a figure in history because of our association and being members of the U.S. Army and said we are all part of military history.

“The U.S. Army is older than the United States,” he said. “In fact, the U.S. Army was a pre-condition of the United States of America.”

Traditionally, the oldest and the youngest Soldier in attendance cut any cake in observance of special occasions. Army’s first openly gay general retires after inspiring others During the month of June, the U.S. Army recognizes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning Service Members and Civilians for their dedicated service to both the Army mission and to our Nation.

Pride Month brings the LGBTQ community together with its families, friends and allies to take pride in themselves and their many achievements.

Maj. Gen. Tammy Smith was the USAG Wiesbaden guest speaker during our Women’s Histor y Month celebration and we wish her and her family the best as they transition to a new life in retirement.

Thomas Brading Army News Service Since Maj. Gen. Tammy Smith, the military’s highestranking openly gay officer, came out in 2012, she has tried being an example of living authentically while also being a beacon of visibility to other Soldiers and their families.

It’s been nearly a decade

twice, and made history after coming out as a member of the LGBT community.

This week, Smith, who was special assistant to the assistant secretary of the Army for manpower and reserve affairs, retired after 35 years of service.

In 2012, her promotion to brigadier general grabbed news headlines. The general never sought to make history that followed her decision to include her wife,Tracey Hepner, during the promotion ceremony. It terrified her to come out as gay in such a public way, but she felt a responsibility to do it, she said.

On a personal level, she thought, “Why wouldn’t I include my wife in my promotion?” she said. After all, it is not uncommon for Soldiers to celebrate promotions with their loved ones.

The promotion ceremony Smith held her ceremony a year after the repeal of DADT. The entire event flipped everything Smith ever thought on its head.Smith used to think,“How do we keep our lives a secret?”

they shouldn’t be afraid to have their families around them,” she said. “I had trepidation and although I didn’t go running into it, I knew it was the right thing to do.”

As difficult as it was for her, coming out publicly as gay “may not have been as easy for someone who was at a lower rank,” Smith said in an interview last week.

On paper, the ceremony followed all the standard protocols for such an event.

Friends and family gathered, she raised her right hand and repeated all the lines asked of her. Then, at the heart of the event, two individuals that Smith loved pinned on her stars.

In her case, those individuals were her dad and Hepner, a woman who before DADT was repealed, she couldn’t openly love.

The ceremony did not start until four in the afternoon. By three, the initial news articles published. It was official. The Army leader who spent decades keeping her life a secret was publicly out to the entire world.

it brought the weight of the situation into focus, she said.

The couple hadn’t told their families anything about the event being any different from other promotion ceremonies.

As much as they longed to be treated like everyone else, they weren’t yet.

Before they could be, the married couple had to take that first step of publicly declaring their love, while also giving visibility to the LGBT community. Smith walked into the event terrified but hopeful that once it was over, a similar event could go easier for the next person.

“Visibility helps people rid their minds of stereotypes held about a person or group of people,” she said.

According to Smith, to see someone of a different group, such as the LGBT community, and associate them as “a real person," she said, helps replace the stereotypes some people may have in their mind.

Smith’s fears of a negative public outcry never came that day, or in the years that have followed, she said. In fact, they still receive positive messages each day.

“It’s rare for Tracey or me not to hear from someone in a formation, or a family member [to a service member], or someone who knows someone in the military, either wanting to tell us about what they have read about us, or how we inspired them, or even asking us questions about their daughters getting married to another woman, wanting to do everything right for the wedding,” Smith said.

Soldiers reflect the diverse society they swore to defend, Smith said.

Col. Mario Washington, the U.S.Army Garrison commander, spoke on the importance of Memorial Day and thanked the students for being part of the community that “is based on remembering what our fallen Soldiers have sacrificed and is determined to keep that legacy alive.”

He stressed how important it is to remember the sacrifices of fallen Soldiers not only on Memorial Day, but everyday.

“I lost Soldiers in Afghanistan and I carry that with me everyday,” he said.

He also asked that on Memorial Day to pause for one minute at 3 p.m. “to honor and respect those who died for our freedom.”

‘Honest and authentic’ One of the most rewarding parts of being married in the Army has also been the simplest joys. Things that may be trivial to others have meant the world to her and Hepner. One example has been living in on-post housing among

other military families who are “going about their regular Army lives every single day,” she said.

“I have seen many changes over the 35 years that I have had the privilege to serve,” she said. “I think the change has been positive, and it has strengthened our military. It has made it more accessible, because of the society for which we serve. I like the direction that we are heading with our people.”

Through her experience, Smith has understood not only how to accept who she is but also become an authentic version of herself, she said.

“There’s a journey that takes place between first acknowledgment and being honest [with yourself ],” she said. “People must find comfort and push back some of that internalized homophobia, and build a bit on the journey between honest and authentic.”

Smith has been on that journey for a decade following her choice to publicly come out, and “now I feel very comfortable in my authenticity,” she said.

“You don’t know how much pain you’re in until you are no longer in it,” said Hepner, who cofounded the Military Partners and Families Coalition, an organization that supports LGBT military partners and their families.

“We lived under the constraints of the law and it was painful,” Hepner said, regarding life before the policy was repealed. “I wish everybody could feel what it’s like to live authentically.”

That isn’t the case for everyone, she said. Many young Soldiers come into the Army at various points in that journey to living authentically.They may wonder if they can be honest with who they are and gauge where they are on the journey from honest to authentic.

“Overall, the Army is a place where you can do that,” Hepner said. “But, we can’t forget that even though the Army is inclusive, each person is still [somewhere] on that individual journey.”

Wiesbaden School Complex holds Memorial Day ceremony Reserve Officers Training Corps Color Guard opened the ceremony by posting the Colors and the combined High School and Middle School Choirs sang the Star Spangled Banner.

Elementary School students, Charlie Yalden and Ava Manzolillo, led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The combined band and

chorus provided music selections and there were special readings by middle school student, Savannah Turner and high school student, Zachary Watts.

Washington and Cadet Lt. Col. Ella Griffin presented a wreath at the end of the ceremony with Andrew Goldie playing Taps.

The Army Surgeon General visits Wiesbaden Health Clinic Connie Dickey U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden While the Army Surgeon General made his Defender 21 visits to units in Germany, he took the time to visit with the staff at the Wiesbaden Health Clinic June 3.

The milestone event was coordinated and organized

by Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic staff, USAREUR-AF G1 Civilian Personnel Directorate, the Office of the Judge Advocate International Law Division, the Ansbach Army Health Clinic, USAG Wiesbaden S3/5/7, volunteers from the Red Cross, the local Works Council as well as members of the local national workforce.

Additionally, USAREURAF G1 CPD guidance required a host nation licensed physician be on-site to oversee the vaccination operation, which was led by U.S. certified medical professionals. Family Physician at the Army Health Clinic in Ansbach, Dr. Paul M. Klin, led the vaccination recipients through the event, which took place in the former Hainerberg bookstore building.

On May 17, approximately 320 U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden local national employees received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination.

On site, Ilene Jones, Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic Primary Care Registered Nurse, ensured that all teams worked well together. “The event ran very smoothly with all hands on deck,” Jones said. “During the session’s debrief many staff voiced how polite, grateful and happy the LN population were.”

Martina Noble from the Directorate of Public Works was very happy that the Army provided this for local national employees. “I think it’s fabulous and I am very grateful for this. That way, I received my vaccination much faster than on the German side,” said Noble.

“I didn’t even feel the needle,” said a content Julius Muehleck from S3/5/7, Plans, Analysis and Integration Division.

Even though the units that have local national workers had reported slightly higher numbers than the amount of people that actually showed up to the event and LN specific processes had to be integrated into the established process at the vaccine center, leadership was very pleased with the outcome of the event.

“Four different agencies worked together for the first time very successfully,” said Jones. “A wonderful success due to all the great teamwork.”

Wiesbaden blood drive has successful two days Connie Dickey U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Brig. Gen. Jed Schaertl, Deputy Commanding General for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs stopped by the Armed Services Blood Program blood drive May 18 to recognize the Reserve Soldiers working with the ASBP and gave a lifesaving blood donation too.

“It’s always great when I can get out and see Reserve component Soldiers supporting our active duty mission, supporting our family members and the community,” Schaertl said.

Staff Sgt. Nkrumah Alladin, non-commissioned officer in charge of the Reserve Soldiers assigned to Armed Services Blood Bank Center - Europe, escorted the general around to the different stations where he

spoke with the blood drive team about their roles.

“It was a great feeling for our Reserve Soldiers to be recognized, but it is rally a team effort,” said Alladin. “We are a joint service team, with Army, Air Force, Navy, Dept. of Defense civilians and contractors all working together to maintain the military’s blood supply.”

The Reserve Soldiers are with the 7378 Blood Detachment, assigned to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

Their home unit is in Mesa, Ariz.

More than 132 donors gave blood during the two-day blood drive on Clay Kaserne.

Their donations could help nearly 400 people, as each donation can be separated into three components; red blood cells, plasma and platelets.

The Reserve Soldiers on this rotation cycle have been a part of the blood drive team since March and in total have collected blood from more than 978 donors, potentially helping provide blood products to more than 2,900 people on and off the battlefield.

Nisbet, Specialists Thomas Reid and Jennifer Nelson explained to the general their work at each of the stations.

“These Soldiers are becoming experts in blood operations, they do everything from collecting blood, processing it according to strict FDA standards to keep the blood safe, and then shipping it out to support active military operations and patients in military treatment facilities around

the world,” said Alladin.

“It’s been tremendous just how the Army Reserve medical community has really stepped up to support us not just here in USAREUR but also back in the United States,” Schaertl told the Reserve Soldiers.

“We’ve had units mobilized to go help out all over the United States and in Europe so it’s really great that you get to be a part of that,” he said.

The ACS Volunteer of the Year recipients were recognized May 26 at the Army Community Service Cafeteria on Hainerberg. There were six individual winners and four organizations recognized for their volunteer efforts.

Members of our community volunteered a total of 38,203 hours last year for 242 various organizations in the Wiesbaden footprint.

Criteria for nominees included number of hours, impact and contribution, extent of dedication and commitment, special achievements, accomplishments and involvement with other organizations.

The Wiesbaden High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps’ Warrior Battalion announces four Wiesbaden seniors are recipients of the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s annual Carolyn Joshua Thresher Hines Memorial Scholarship Program, June 3.

The scholarship program is for deserving high school seniors who best exemplifies Dr. Hines’ ideals and who excel in marksmanship.

The seniors receiving the Carolyn Hines Memorial Scholarship are Jaden Anderson, Lidia Mason, Joshua Lidia Mason Thresher, and Charlotte Kordonowy. Each senior has been awarded a $1,000 one-year scholarship assistance in order to encourage and reward their outstanding efforts.

Overall, Wiesbaden accounted for four of the total 153 scholars selected in this year’s program.

Previous Wiesbaden HS Jaden Anderson CMP Scholarship recipients were Honor Stackpole Class of 2018 and Eoin Oravetz Class of 2019.

CMP Scholarships are one-year awards that may be used to fund any accredited secondary education or vocational program. CMP Scholarships may also be Charlotte Kordonowy used to pursue a postsecondary education during the upcoming school year.

The CMP seeks applications from high school seniors who currently compete in marksmanship competitions. Based on merit, selected individuals are high school seniors who are currently enrolled in a team or club that is participating in marksmanship competitions. To be eligible for CMP scholarships, junior shooters must: Be a U.S. Citizen. Be of good moral character. Have achieved a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Be a graduating high school senior. Demonstrate acceptance to a university, college or trade school leading to a diploma or trade certification. And demonstrate marksmanship competition experience.

Dr. Carolyn Hines spent more than 20 years as a dedicated member of the CMP Board of Directors – actively involved in many measures to encourage youth opportunities but none as passionate as her leadership in the Scholarship Committee.

During her commitment to the program, she was instrumental in developing a financial allocation that reached $160,000 towards marksmanship junior athletes. Dr. Hines passed away in December 2019, leaving a legacy that will live on through those who will use her Memorial Scholarship to create limitless possibilities for future generations.

Wiesbaden child care center providing support through the COVID pandemic Connie Dickey U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Throughout the COVID 19 lockdown here at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, the child development centers have continued to provide needed support to our community of Soldiers and Civilians. The center on Clay Kaserne has 140 children because it is a School Age Center and Child Development Center combined and the center on Hainerberg

and children only in the same room, disinfects inside and outside consistently throughout opening hours and has stepped up handwashing procedures beyond normal levels.

The center also does not do family style dining as of yet, but serve the children their meals.

Susan Hutchings, facility director of Child and Youth Services, Child Development Center on Clay Kaserne, said parents are not allowed in the center.

Joan Engel cleans all the surfaces in the infant room at the end of the day. The room is cleaned with soap and water and then is sprayed with a sanitizing solution.

Kaserne has 21 children.

Even though neither center is at full capacity, both the centers have placed safeguards in place that have ensured the children and staff are safe while at the centers.

The centers have been successfully working through COVID for more than a year and have instituted safeguards to ensure the safety of both children and staff members.

The center on Clay Kaserne practices social distancing, have instituted more cleaning requirements, wear masks, use Pods which are rooms with staff

“We screen each family at the door and ask COVID-specific questions, as well as taking the child's temperature before they come into the building,” she said. All paperwork and payments are done outside.

Patricia Floyd, director of Child and Youth Services, Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation, Hainerberg Child Development said, “We have lost the majority of our families through PCS and other child care arrangements.

In addition parents/customers are not permitted inside of the facility.”

At the Hainerberg center, Floyd said all employees in the facilities must wear face masks at all times to protect one another. They follow the 6 feet social distance and use hand sanitize to cleanse their hands before entering the facility.

Once inside of the facility, hands are washed with warm water and soap for 20 seconds.

In all the c lassrooms there is a cleaning staff that does the cleaning inside and outside the classrooms.

Staff arrive 30 minutes before the doors open to ensure that all classrooms are cleaned, organized and ready to go. After closing, the staff have 30 minutes to clean and sanitize their classrooms for the next day.

The Management Team does daily laundry for the classrooms and washing and drying all staff aprons (uniforms) to make sure they are clean and ready for the next business day.

During meal times, only one staff prepares all of the children’s plates to decrease cross contamination while wearing gloves on both hands.

Hutchings said they will continue to provide a safe environment when the center opens to full capacity.

Each room at the CDC has a staff member who is designated as the cleaning person for that room. All the surfaces that the children or staff member touch are cleaned with soap and water and then with a sanitizing solution.

Although the cleaning is done throughout the day, the surfaces must be cleaned at a minimum of three times during the day. The carpets are disinfected after the children leave for the day.

“We clean all the toys too,” Ray Engel, the assistant director of the CDC said. “The toys are cleaned and sanitized throughout the day and in the evenings after the children leave.”

“We have always had a system in place to provide a clean and safe environment. We will continue to keep our cleaning standards and go above and beyond the normal cleaning standards,” Hutchings said.

I miss him everyday…that is the sentiment of a friend lost and for Benjamin Brand with the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, no statement is truer than how he feels about losing his best friend, Special Forces Master Sgt. Micheal B. Riley.

Riley was killed during combat operations in the Uruzgan Province in Afghanistan June 25, 2019. He joined the Army in 2006 and deployed to Afghanistan 6 times; Iraq, Israel, Slovakia, Lebanon, Norway, Estonia, Republic of Georgia, Syria, Hungary, Poland and Turkey.

Riley was born in December 1986 in Heilbronn, Germany, outside Stuttgart, to an American Army father and a German mother. He and Brand grew up together, became best friends and shared a passion for music and DJ’ing. Brand said they DJ’d together in many clubs around the Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt and Kaiserslautern area throughout their years together.

Brand reflected on Riley, saying “When you saw Master Sgt. Micheal Riley, you saw one

thing. That he was a professional through and through. Mike had a huge desire to constantly improve, to always be the best version of himself, but also make people better, so they achieved results they didn’t think they could achieve, but Mike knew they could.”

Brand said that whether it was through coaching, teaching or mentoring, Riley wanted the best for everyone he came across.

“If he called you his friend, he was there for you no matter what problems you had, and he made sure you were okay and making the right decision.” He also said that Riley supported his teammates, for example taking them on runs to get them ready for Ranger School or flying to Fort Bragg so he could train new potential members for the company.

“Mike died, doing exactly what he loved to do,closing with the enemy in order to destroy the enemy. Mike died with his boots on, in direct contact with the enemy. There was no other place that Mike wanted to be, to be in a place, surrounded by his brothers, performing his craft, his art, being a Master of Arms, a Special Forces Soldier.”

Since Riley was a fitness beast, every year on or around June 25, Riley is honored and remembered with a workout called the Micheal B.Riley Hero WOD. It is a crossfit workout that Green Berets, friends and family across Germany, St. Louis, Fort Carson and other

military Bases around the world conduct.

This year for the first time, it will be conducted at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center on Clay Kaserne, supported by Morale Welfare Recreation, on June 26 at 10 a.m. It is free and open to the community.

Maria receives constant positive feedback from the German Police at the Wiesbaden Präsidium and well as the 7 precincts that respond to our Military Community. She recently independently completed an MOU/MAA between the City of Wiesbaden and the Garrison. Maria has developed a customer service network with Garrison HQ, DPW, DHR and CPAC, which streamlines customer services and improves overall efficiencies.

We recently responded to a Domestic Disturbance in Hainerberg and our interpretors were not available. She volunteered and responded with our MPs. On scene, she utilised her interpretor skills to quickly calm the situation and assisted the German Police with questions and answers. Both the Military Police and German Police were very impressed with her demeanor and professionalism.

John Cobb is well known by many through out the community for his friendly and caring attitude. He has received numerous positive comments through the ICE program, below are some comments submitted: „Mr. Cobb was really professional and even through I didn’t have the spare part, he improvised and ensured that I’m good to go until my parts arrive.“ „Mr. Cobb helped me all the way with my tires. He is an employee every company would want to have!“ Mr. Cobb helped change oil and tires. Went above and beyond, fixed my cracked bumper and reset my computer.“ He goes out of his way to provide great customer service, and always looks for ways to help the customer whether it is finding supplies, locating outside services or just lending a helping hand when needed.

Every morning Sandra is ready to greet the Soldiers and ensure that our strict COVID-19 mitigations standards are adhered to by all patrons who use the Fitness Center. She gently reminds guests of the important role they all play in following these important mitigation standards. Due to COVID-19, the Juice Bar operations have been halted, thereby making the position this individual was hired to do, non existent. She immediately jumped over to assist the Recreation side of the house with the daily cleaning of the equipment, establishing households in out database, updates and entries into our database, registration for programs, events and facility 24 Hour access, equipment checkout, ID scans, etc.

During the last months, Ronny has been involved in 5 ongoing construction projects on the housing areas of the USAG Wiesbaden footprint. The projects include 150 buildings and the total cost adds up to approximately $13.5 million, which results in a huge amount of work and responsibility.

He has invested a lot of time and effort in coordinating these projects with the German construction agencies, the Corps of Engineers and the contracting companies to ensure the work process was as smooth as possible and to minimize the impact on the building occupants.

Because of his constant and tireless effort, he has ensured as little impact as possible to the quality of life of our soldiers and families at USAG Wiesbaden.

Tony King shows exceptional customer service, every day. He is central and critical to Garrison operations, synchronizing with staff, units, and agencies for any and all activities that USAG Garrison Wiesbaden participates in. Tony continuously leads his team to successfully complete any and all missions that they are tasked with. In March 2021, Tony was instrumental in two major Garrison initiatives: COVID Vaccination Planning, Coordination, and Execution; and, Extremism Stand Down Day. Without his level-headed and realistic approach to solving problems, the Extremism Stand Down training requirements would have been nearly impossible to complete on time. His „get it done“ attitude and approach to customer service forced those working this event to pull together as a team, and to think outside the box in order to support customers (in this case, the entire Garrison workforce).

Darian interacts with internal and external customers with high enthusiasm and shows that she has genuine dedication to excellent customer service. Darian greets everyone in the morning while signing everyone in. She knows every child’s name, and makes it a point to make them feel welcome by calling them by name, telling them how happy she is to see them, giving them a pat on the back. We can count on Darian to help escort the children to their classrooms in the morning. In addition she helps co-workers and uses a friendly tone of voice and explains complicated information in a manner that is easy to understand. She greets new parents and gives them information on what to expect and what they will need for their child to help put them at ease. She responds to questions in a timely, accurate, and courteous manner. She focuses on what she can do to assist the customer not what she can’t do. Darian always demonstrates positive professional behaviour that reflects Army values.

Due to a restructuring initiative, the Between Occupancy Maintenance contract moved from HSG to OMD. Rosemarie has taken the opportunity to advance in her career and is currently employed as a Quality Assurance Evaluator for the BOM contract. As this initiative was enforced very rapidly, her old position is not yet filled and the new team is not fully implemented, so she is still executing most of her old job duties while never complaining.

Her work has a great impact on the community, whether it is responding to ICE comments immediately and ensuring the customer is taken care of or inspecting newly renovated quarters to ensure newly arriving military members can really call Wiesbaden their home.

NEWS & FEATURES Alfredo Barazza U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District Members of the U.S. Army Garrison, Wiesbaden community have a new multipurpose field that is environmentally f riendly and can be used throughout the year.

Col. Mario A. Washington, the garrison commander, hosted a ribbon-cutting event on June 4 to celebrate the opening of a new artificial turf field on Lucius D. Clay Kaserne in front of an audience of about a dozen participants from the local military community.

“I’d like to thank the crew, it’s a great new project,” he said.

The new multi-purpose sports turf field is the latest sports addition on North Clay and is located next door to the recently completed Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation Programs Recreation Center.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District Commander Col. Patrick R. Dagon and Gregory Holzinger USAG Wiesbaden MWR Programs Director, attended the ceremony,gave remarks and helped cut the ceremonial ribbon.

“We’re grateful to have been able to work with MWR and the garrison on both of these exciting projects serving the Wiesbaden community and making more outdoor recreation available to Soldiers, civilians and their families stationed here,” Dagon said.

The sports field was built to improve the health and quality of life for members of the Wiesbaden Army Community by providing them with the open space and outdoor lighting to participate both in daytime and nighttime physical activities such as flag football and soccer.

By substituting natural grass with all-weather turf, the field can also be used for a wide variety of summer and winter sports activities throughout the year.

The USACE Europe District oversaw construction of the $1.5 million project that was made with an artificial sport surface designed to reduce irrigation needs, provide more effective water drainage and to lower maintenance costs.

Completed in May 2021, the construction and installation was the end net result of the partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, USAG Wiesbaden DPW, the Landesbetrieb Bau und Immobilien Hessen, and a German construction contractor.

Ila Dermanoski U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Wiesbaden High School honored the graduating class of 2021 the evening of June 4.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, and the imminent threat of severe weather, the 73rd commencement exercise was held in a hangar at the Wiesbaden Army Airfield on Clay Kaserne. There, 106 graduates transitioned from students to WHS alumni.

Coach David Brown urged the graduates to “Make it your intention to learn something new that will help someone else every day.” He recalled the resilience of the students throughout the pandemic and applauded them for making it fashionable to have school spirit again despite the nature of the past two years.

“Coach”, as he’s known throughout the community, reminded the graduates of the words Connor Buchheit spoke in his valedictory address.“When the world closed, Wiesbaden found a way, hang on to that, when things don’t go as you think they should, find a way.”

As the tassels turned, smiles engulfed the faces of the graduates, administrators and guests alike. Following the ceremony a parade of graduates wound through the streets of Newman Village. Residents and well-wishers with signs and pom-poms lined the streets and cheered loudly as the new graduates passed.

Garrison Commander, Col. Mario Washington, stopped by the Wiesbaden High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps’ practice event June 2 to negotiate a rope bridge as they get ready for their summer Cadet Leadership Challenge later this month.

The Cadet Leadership Challenge or Summer Camp, will be held in the local area June 14-18 and will include daily competitive events between two teams where the rope bridge will be integrated. Washington participated in the Corps’third block class during their very first time building the rope bridge. The Rope Bridge is a team building event in the JROTC program. It is an integral event of the “Raider Team” training and competition. The Warrior Battalion established its first Raider Team during this school year and has developed some great techniques for efficiently and safely negotiating a linear obstacle, according to retired Lt. Col. Jon A. Ring, Senior Army Instructor of the JROTC Warrior Battalion. He explained that the one rope bridge is used by tactical units to negotiate linear obstacles such as rivers or steep terrain – especially when the unit is laden with heavy equipment and weapons. The technique is used extensively in Ranger school during the mountain and swamp phases.

In U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden that has meant dramatically altering food and beverage operations to ensure everyone’s health and safety while continuing to seek and find ways to enhance quality of life.

The Wiesbaden Entertainment Center has been at the foref ront of that effort. Its manager, William Montgomery, was recently honored for his contributions as a winner in the 2020 U.S. Army Installation Management Command’s James A. Carroll, Jr., and Excellence in Management Awards.

“Mr. Montgomery has displayed initiative, resourcefulness and outstanding professional ability to improve on services offered even during mitigation measures as a result of COVID-19,” said Wiesbaden MWR’s Business Operations Division Chief Mark Smith.“The initiative to create a food delivery program, drive-through events and a mobile food truck were instrumental to our community during COVID-19.”

Wiesbaden Community Spouses Club hosts scholarship presentation night Connie Dickey U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden The Wiesbaden Community Spouses’Club Scholarship presentation awards ceremony was held at the Tony Bass Auditorium May 26 at 6 p.m. recognizing both continuing education and high school recipients.

In total, the club received 53 applications for scholarships and were able to present scholarships to 42 students worth $62,000.

The high school recipients are Ljah-Jcob Dumo, Maya Darby, Duncan McLendon, Carter Bailey, Tyler Houk, Kaitlyn Taylor, Charlotte Kordonowy, Ryley Bullock, Kiana Bussa, Alondra Santiago, Gilbert Bustillos, Izabella Pitaniello, Jackson Schuyler, Daniel Iverson, Aidan Springer, Dominic
