“ Some missions leave a lasting memory—this was one of them. I had the solemn honor of serving as the Flying Crew Chief, alongside SSgt. John Glynn, on the mission to repatriate four U.S.
Soldiers who tragically lost their lives in Lithuania. Representing the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and working in concert with the rest of the 37th Airlift Squadron, we carried out a task steeped in both pride and profound sorrow.
From the moment we stepped onto the tarmac, the weight of
the mission was undeniable. I vividly recall the Chaplain’s eulogy, delivered with reverence and heartbreak. As we stood at attention and saluted while each casket was carried onto the aircraft, a heavy silence settled over us all—punctuated only by the measured footsteps of the honor guard. My eyelids grew heavy with
emotion; the gravity of what we were doing set in.
Once the ramp closed, we turned our focus to ensuring our fallen brothers were treated with the utmost respect and dignity. We secured each casket with the cleanest straps we could find and carefully adjusted their American flags. Every detail mattered. This was not just

another mission—it was a sacred duty.
Our commander and the entire 86th AMXS stand in full support of the grieving families. We extend our deepest condolences and reaffirm our commitment to honor the service and sacrifice of these heroes. Bringing them home was not only a responsibility—it was a privilege.”

Morven native graduates basic Military Training as dorm chief

Airman Basic Jackson Smith, a Morven, Georgia, native and 2024 graduate of the American School of Madrid, recently completed U.S. Air Force Basic Military Training at Lackland AFB, Texas. Smith served as dorm chief of the 324th Training Squadron, Flight 346, and is now continuing technical training as a Geospatial Intelligence Apprentice at Goodfellow AFB, Texas. He is the son of retired Air Force members William and Marissa Smith.

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz has been named the number one garrison in Europe and fourth across the globe in the 2024 Installation Management Command Best Garrison Competition. The competition, sponsored by the Secretary of Defense, is a component of the Commander in Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence, recognizing outstanding performance and innovation across all U.S. military installations.
“I want to congratulate all the professional garrison teams for their exemplary dedication and commit-
ment to excellence in supporting their Senior Commanders, Soldiers, Civilians, and Family Members,” said Lt. Gen. Omar Jones, commanding general of IMCOM.
Jones noted that each of the winning garrisons will be recognized and presented with an enduring memento at the upcoming Garrison Command Team Conference.
Competing against garrisons worldwide, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz stood out in nearly every major category including mission support, energy and water conservation, fiscal responsibility, real property stewardship and quality of life.
What set the garrison apart was its ability to deliver results across the
most operationally complex footprint in IMCOM-Europe. The garrison’s recognition highlighted multiple achievements propelling them into the top tier:
• Successfully delivers base support for nine General Officers/Senior Executive Service functions and 18 brigade-level commands, contributing to readiness across an expanding area of responsibility.
• Manages sweeping Army structural changes, including the move of Special Operations Forces to Baumholder, while proactively preparing for community growth of 10 percent over the next three years.
• Oversaw $5 billion in construction projects, including the $1.6 billion Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center and major housing improvements for over 700 families.
• Demonstrated forward-thinking through initiatives such as the “Join US” hiring campaign, which grew the Department of Public Works and Emergency Services by over 10 percent and drew in more than 2,000 job seekers at the first German job fair of its kind.
• Partnered locally to save U.S. taxpayers $100 million in water infrastructure and slashed utility costs by $150,000 through smart energy transitions.
• Boosted CEL & Associates Survey (tenant satisfaction survey) response rates to 39.4 percent — the best in Europe — connecting with residents through live streams, town halls and public affairs communication efforts.
• Improved quality of life and opened 304 new childcare spaces across seven child development centers, cutting waitlists to the lowest level in three years.
And the momentum hasn’t slowed. In 2024 alone, the garrison achieved additional milestones of firsts:
• DFMWR’s Community Recreation Services is the first-ever internationally accredited program by the National Recreation and Park Association.
• The Department of Fire and Emergency Services named Best Large Fire Department in IMCOM-Europe.
• USAG-RP led the Army with $2.6million in energy savings during the height of Europe’s energy crisis.
• Baumholder Youth Center is nationally recognized for its highquality programming and commitment to youth enrichment.
Col. Jeffery C. Higgins, garrison commander, commended the workforce’s hard work and dedication.
“This award is a testament to the Garrison’s unwavering commitment as a trusted team of professionals supporting both our mission partners and the communities we serve,” said Higgins. “I couldn’t be prouder of this team and have full confidence in their continued excellence in delivering world-class garrison services and enabling warfighter readiness.”
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz is IMCOM’s premier command in Europe and powers the Army’s global response mission, providing critical services to 35 tenant units across 26 strategic sites in Germany. The garrison supports a total force community of about 44,000, including ActiveDuty servicemembers, Department of Defense civilians, contractors, host nation employees, family members and retirees.
The Kaiserslautern Military Community, which includes USAG Rheinland-Pfalz and Ramstein Air Base, has the largest concentration of Americans outside the continental United States.

Medical Readiness Battalion Change of Command
The Medical Readiness Battalion – Rheinland-Pfalz held a formal change of command ceremony June 16, marking a significant moment in the unit’s continued dedication to excellence and operational support. Cancer survivor, soldier, athlete praises military health system healthcare team, ‘My Coaches’

As he trains for the 2025 Department of Defense Warrior Games in July, U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class David Hong attributes his success to “a real team”—though, he’s not talking about his fellow athletes on Team Army.
“I’ve had a team of people that went through my journey, from the platoon sergeants, the squad leaders, my nurse case manager … they’ve participated in my ‘scrimmages,’ my meetings and appointments,” he said.
The team captain: His primary care physician at the time, Paul Haufe, a physician assistant at Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson, Colorado, who encouraged Hong to get a routine colonoscopy at age 50.
“He initiated all of this,” said Hong. “He was always there for me from the get-go, even behind the scenes.”
When Hong received a lifechanging diagnosis, stage 4 colon cancer, his doctor urgently formed a comprehensive care team to start treatment: Specialists, nurses, and other dedicated personnel within the Military Health System.
“They were my coaches, they pushed me,” Hong said.
A cancer diagnosis, a path to recovery
When Hong was due for his first routine colonoscopy in July 2022, his primary care physician “didn't give me a choice,” he said.
“It was the second time my PCP recommended that I get the screening done. I actually refused to do it because I was busy,” Hong said. “He was going to talk to my command to make sure that I went through with that referral to do the colonoscopy … so I went.”
Besides, he said, he felt fine.
The screening caught a cancerous block-
age in his colon, which Hong credits the preventive screening with saving his life.
“These types of cancers, people are getting younger and getting them—they are preventable,” he said. At Hong’s encouragement, twelve chaplains he worked with scheduled their colonoscopies.
He was immediately connected to the gastrointestinal specialist, surgical team, and nurses within Evans.
“It was right at the hospital, and with their capabilities—they were able to have all the resources there to do the cancer removal there the following week,” Hong said.
He had part of his colon removed, but the cancer spread to his lymph nodes. The following month, he started chemotherapy at CommonSpirit Penrose Cancer Center in Colorado Springs through the TRICARE health plan network, which gives access to a wide range of healthcare services by TRICAREauthorized providers—offering streamlined access and reduced costs to nonmilitary hospitals and clinics.
“It was a combination of treatments” through both hospitals, he said, that started his recovery journey.
“My surgeon recommended me to go to Penrose Cancer Center, which I’ve been working with very closely, now,” Hong said. He initially received 12 rounds of chemotherapy at the center, but the cancer spread to his liver and stomach.
Hong went through a total of 23 treatments of chemotherapy and had several surgeries to remove the cancer, as well as part of his liver and stomach lining. He kept up with treatment and appointments through Maria Schuch, the nurse case manager assigned to the Fort Carson Soldier Recovery Unit—a support system that he credits with a proactive approach to his care.
“Right from the beginning, she was really
engaged, and she knew what she needed to provide. She was on top of all my referrals. It really was teamwork,” he said. “Get connected with a nurse case manager. They aren’t there to babysit you, and they make sure all your records are updated.”
While he recovered, he found adaptive sports therapy through the Soldier Recovery Unit, a program within the Army Recovery Care Program at Fort Carson, Colorado, and participated in archery, cycling, and field events. That took him all the way to the Army Trials, where he earned a spot on Team Army and a trip to the 2025 Warrior Games. While at the trials, he was awarded “Heart of the Team” from his fellow athletes.
Aside from his U.S. Army teammates, he credits the team at Evans and at Penrose with helping him recover. “They’re all excellent in their own way. They’ve been providing the same care, very professional and on top of things,” he said. “It’s a blessing.”
Service rooted in faith, recovery in adaptive care
Hong, a religious affairs specialist who joined the U.S. Army as a chaplain’s assistant, knows from both perspectives that seeking help is a sign of strength. Chaplains, he learned, are often the first line of defense when service members may be struggling.
“We screen soldiers that may have issues, and we try to link them up with the right resources,” he said. “We try to work very closely with behavioral health, because I think our culture in the military, any branch, if you show any type of weakness—especially mentally—people may get scared or afraid, you know, because they don’t know that resources are out there.”
As one who sought mental health support himself, he encourages anyone to talk to a chaplain for support.
“I think as religious affairs and chaplains, we bring a different perspective. We can introduce you to a resource that might work for you,” he said. “It’s always the safety of the individual that is important. We try to give them all the resources necessary, especially with mental health.”
Backed by team on the way to the games
On the sidelines are Hong’s cheerleaders: his wife, Monica, and family who has been his support throughout all of his health challenges.
“Going to cancer treatment with my wife, having her there next to me, having my sister, going through my treatment— there are days that I didn’t want to do it,” he said. “My children are everything.”
He also credits his military leadership and fellow chaplains for being there for him.
“They were there to sacrifice their time and then all the phone calls that (I made) whenever I needed to talk to somebody like the chaplains, friends, even the leadership, they were there checking up on me. I think that’s so important.”
Hong is also finding strength through his fellow wounded warriors, as they shared stories of recovery and resilience leading up to the Warrior Games.
“When I went to the Army trials, I heard everybody’s different story. And I was like, ‘wow, I want to be part of this,’” he said. “I was seeking a community. It’s so therapeutical and so good for you to be part of a mission.”
Hong is still receiving care, and he feels like he’s in good hands through continued monitoring and checkups: “It’s all hands on deck and they’re doing all of the things they should be doing.” It’s because of his healthcare team, he said, that he can still serve in the U.S. Army.
“It’s harder because I’m not able to do the job that I want to do because of my health, and it took time for me to process, but I’m still here,” he said. “Maybe (serving) can be a different, in the way of helping soldiers and their families and the veterans—a different kind of position, maybe part of a plan to give strength to others who might be going through something similar.”
While at the games in Colorado Springs, he plans to pay homage to a particular healthcare team member while competing: Schuch, his nurse case manager at the SRU. “My manager’s mom passed away, and she’s from Ireland. So, I’m going to put the Irish flag on my bike and dedicate it for her mom.”
For Hong, his participation at Warrior Games is much bigger than winning. It’s all part of being a team.
“Obviously we want to win because we’re competitive, but we also want to win in every way, shape in life,” he said. “I didn’t get here on my own. I did put in the work, but if you can’t find that fire in yourself, you’ll find people around you that will help you get there.”

Zweibrücken
Zweibrücken is just a “hop and a skip” from Ramstein. The town of 35,000 inhabitants may not be a vibrant metropolis, but it does offer high recreational value and is definitely worth a visit.
Military legacy
From 1969 to 1992, a military airfield was operated by the U.S. Air Force in Zweibrücken. The 26th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing and the 38th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron were stationed in Zweibrücken; both were purely reconnaissance units and not combat units. Since that time, there have been many friendly and family ties between Zweibrücken and the United States. Every Zweibrücken resident knows at least one American who was formerly stationed in Zweibrücken. Despite the great distance, many friendships have been rekindled through social media and the internet.
Incidentally, its twin town is Yorktown. A regiment from
Zweibrücken, the Royal Deux Ponts, was involved in great battles in the War of Independence. The regiment defeated British forces in the Battle of Yorktown in October 1781, forcing the British to surrender. Ample reason for residents of both cities to have known and appreciated each other for over two centuries.
From 1955 to 1969, the Royal Canadian Air Force was the operator and builder of Zweibrücken Air Base. Typically Canadian, the base could not go without an ice arena, the only one far and wide. The semi-professional Zweibrücken Hornets have their home there and play their championship games in front of up to 1500 spectators. Regardless of the sporting value, the atmosphere there is always vibrant, and it is fun to cheer on the hockey players.
After the withdrawal of U.S. troops in 1992, the site was converted to civilian use. Today, the Zweibrücken Fashion Outlet is one of the largest outlet centers in Europe with over 120 brand stores. An extension of over 50 stores is planned, but the construction start is not yet deter-
mined. Tip: Use American holidays or family days for your visit and you will have the outlet almost to yourself. There is also a bowling alley, an indoor playground, an indoor miniature golf course, a go-kart track for budding racing drivers and a number of restaurants.
Roses and horses
Historically, Zweibrücken is considered the city of roses and horses. Rose-growing has a long tradition here, which is also reflected in the rose garden, one of the largest (rose) garden parks in the whole of Europe.
The horse racing meadow (where there are always prestigious horse races) and the former Ducal State stud farm are right next door. Fun fact: Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have always ridden a horse of the “Zweibrücker” breed. Only once did he ride into battle on a horse of a different breed - and experienced his Waterloo in the truest sense of the word, he lost the battle, after which things went downhill politically for the little Emperor of the French. It is diffi-

Oktoberfest?
The center of the city is a great place for a stroll, and the rich gastronomy invites you to relax. The Ducal palace is also located there. It was home to the Wittelsbach family, the rulers of the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken.
Long story short: A scion of this lineage is the reason why the Oktoberfest was celebrated in Munich. In 1810, the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (from the House of Wittelsbach) to Princess Therese of SaxeHildburghausen was celebrated in Munich. To mark the occasion, a large horse race was held on the Theresienwiese, which later became the Oktoberfest. And because the kings of Bavaria were also Dukes of Zweibrücken at the time, the “Zweibrücker Strasse” still exists in Munich today. The castle can only be visited from the

outside, unless you wish to be prosecuted; it is now home to the highest court in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Fun and festivals
Zweibrücken and the villages in the surrounding area are also known for their festivals. There are always opportunities to celebrate throughout the year in and around Zweibrücken, usually with live music. Halloween is a big celebration there, especially for children. Mind you: A big Halloween spectacle by German standards. Due to its proximity to the French border, a visit to Zweibrücken can also be easily combined with a trip to France, where you can continue across the border to Bitche (yes, that really is the name of the town).
Each year the city celebrates a large summer city festival and invites visitors to a diverse selection of food and beverages, along with great music on various stages. This year, the event will take place from July 25 – 27. Grab the (horseshoe) iron while it’s hot, and combine a visit to roses, horses, festivities and shop until you drop!

KERWE (VILLAGE FEST)

During the summer and early fall months, almost every town or village celebrates its “Kerwe”, a dialect version of “Kirchweih”. Originally these fests were celebrated when a church was consecrated. Throughout time, the festivals have developed into cheerful town or village events where friends, neighbors, relatives and new town residents meet and have a good time together, usually with plenty of food, drink and live music. In most towns village youth bind the traditional “Kerwestrauss,” a pole decorated with colored ribbons mounted at the local Gasthaus. Part of the tradition is speeches about local scandals, gossip and funny events. Some villages also have parades on Sunday. Upcoming fests: Obermohr July 25, Weltersbach Aug: 9, Mehlingen Aug 15. A visit to the Celtic village in Steinbach AT Donnersberg is like a fascinating journey into the mystical world of the early Donnersberg inhabitants. This small, reconstructed village is more than a museum in the traditional sense. Here, the culture of the Celtic “natives” comes alive. Use all your senses to follow in the footsteps of the people who lived on the Donnersberg more than 2,000 years ago. The complex, built in 2004, was modeled on the floor plans of a Celtic settlement from the second half of the 1st century BC, discovered near Germersheim. The six buildings provide a good impression of the craft techniques used by the Celts to build houses. You can see wooden post and half-timbered structures, constructed with appropriate tenons using traditional timber construction techniques. Wooden shingles were used for the roofing. The facades were plastered with clay. In the Celtic village, guests of all ages can also get hands-on. Learning Celtic craft techniques such as felting, arrow making, and clay bead making complement the guided tour of the village and make the visit a very special excursion into the world of the Celts on Donnersberg.

Long before the roar of U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II aircraft engines pierces the skies of the Euro-Atlantic region, Airmen in the 495th Fighter Squadron are meticulously inspecting, packing and fitting the gear that will ensure the pilots will return safely.

responsible for maintaining more than $15 million in equipment that kept 24 pilots safe in the skies.
Atlantic Trident 25 was a joint exercise designed to sharpen air-to-air combat tactics and enhance interoperable coordination between the U.S., U.K., France and Finland. The training event brought together fourth- and fifth-generation fighter aircraft from across Allied nations to simulate real-world conflict scenarios in a contested environment.
“It’s cool to see the real-world side of my job and how it makes a difference in the exercise itself because this is not just practice, it’s ‘practice how you play,’ and that’s something aircrew flight equipment has to do,” said Toal. “We can’t slack off at
our job because the pilots and their gear are simply too important to lose.”
Toal was not only responsible for daily inspections and maintenance of flight gear, but also for pre-exercise logistics: Coordinating, packing and transporting each participating aircrew member’s gear from their respective bases and squadrons to safely arrive in Finland on time. Her proactive coordination across operations and support sections ensured the unit was fully equipped and ready to execute from day one.

as possible to best prepare their pilots for each day’s training sorties.
Each AFE technician is responsible for a broad inventory of life-preserving gear, including helmets, oxygen masks, antigravity suits, flotation devices, survival kits and parachutes. These items are not only essential for normal flight operations, they are the pilot’s last line of defense in the event of an emergency, so attention to detail is a daily requirement that can directly affect pilot survivability and mission success.
“We have zero margin for error,” said Senior Airman Jonathan Gipson, 495th FS AFE technician. “If we don’t do something correctly—even the smallest thing—it could mean life or death, especially if a pilot has to eject.”
This relentless commitment to the mission has earned Toal and Gipson and the rest of the AFE team recognition from Brig. Gen. Jack Arthaud, 48th Fighter Wing com -
mander, for their excellent performance. In an exercise centered on joint power projection and air superiority, the 495th FS AFE team’s work on the ground made takeoffs possible. Toal and Gipson’s dedication stands as a reminder that the foundation of airpower is built not just in the skies, but in the hands of Airmen ensuring that every mission begins—and ends—safely.

Schönau: What to Do
For a place with less than 500 people, Schönau is fairly vibrant. It has a bakery, plenty of gasthauses and two churches, one of which is named after St. Nicholas. But there isn’t a whole lot more to do in town beyond that. And that’s kind of the point.
Travelers to Schönau need to get into the trees. And there are plenty of options for doing so. During most of the year, there are excellent mountain biking opportunities nearby. During the deep winter, intrepid
explorers can bring their snowshoes and have extraordinary adventures tromping through the wilderness.
But the real magic around Schönau happens on foot. Because there are castles lurking in the forests. Lots of them. On both sides of the border. And discovering them is a joy.
The One Thing You Have to See: The German/French Castle Trail
The German/French Castle Trail (known locally as the Deutsch-französischer Burgweg) is astonishingly cool. At roughly 30 kilometers
long with lots of semi-strenuous ups and downs, this loop trail isn’t something that most hikers will finish in one day. In fact, part of the joy of Schönau is that it makes for an awesome repeat-visit destination.
But once you’re on the trail, you’ve got options. Here are just a few:
• Brave the Pfaffenfelsen. An overlook that is close to Schönau, the Pfaffenfelsen is not for the faint of heart. It requires a ladder climb up a near vertical column of rock. But you’ll have a major feeling of accom-
plishment and a reason to celebrate when you get home.
• Hike to Wegelnburg Castle. Sitting at over 500 meters above sea level, this is almost the best place north of the Alps for good views in Germany. When you summit Wegelnburg, it feels like you’ve arrived at something that existed in Tolkien’s fictional Middle Earth. And, on a clear day, you can see to Strasbourg, France, 60 kilometers to the south. The hike is approximately one hour, one-way, from Schönau.
• Hike to Blumenstein Castle. Blumenstein is a marvelous castle, too. Closing in on 900 years old (the ruins, anyway) and perched on the edge of what could generously be called a cliff, it makes for an entertaining exploration. Hikers can reach it in 45 minutes or so from Schönau.
• France on foot. You should also experience one of the fundamental fun points of this hike and step into France. Hikers can tackle the French Fleckenstein and German Wegelnburg Castles in a round-trip loop that takes about 4-5 hours.
Getting There and Navigating
By car, Schönau is one hour south of Kaiserslautern, 2 hours south of Wiesbaden and two hours west of Stuttgart.
There are plenty of great apps and online resources to help you plan your trip and navigate the trails, including Mapy, AllTrails, Komoot, Bergfex, and others. Once you’re out in the woods, most signage is excellent. Make sure you have access to offline maps, just in case.
