Electric Vehicles Coming Soon?
So pleased to hear President Ramaphosa warning our local car manufacturers to adapt more quickly to producing electric vehicles – or they will be le behind by the global car industry.
Be a sad day if they were, because the local industry employs 110,000 people.
But our trading partners are changing, and if we don’t change too, we could well be le behind.
The UK and EU have commi ed to banning the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035. Good for them!
But bad for us if we have not made the move to producing electric vehicles at scale, because 46% of vehicles we make in South Africa are exported to the UK and Europe.
We also stand to lose 67% of our exports in vehicle components if we have not shi ed to EVs.
EVs are expensive, so let’s hope the price will come down as more countries produce them.
I have only one friend who owns an electric vehicle – actually it is a hybrid - so can be either petrol or electric.
This friend, Jan, told me a funny story about his car. He was driving home from dinner one night when he was pulled over by traffic cops at a rou ne roadblock.
“I saw those blue lights and I knew I was in trouble,” he said. “We’d been drinking wine and I was worried I was over the limit –and I also didn’t have my driver’s licence with me.”
He had been to Angola and had taken all but the essen als out of his wallet in case he was pickpocketed – including his licence - and hadn’t put them back yet.
The traffic cop shone his torch into the vehicle.
“Evening sir, driver’s licence please.”
Jan made a show of looking for it while trying to think how he could explain not having it.
Meanwhile the cop was looking at the vehicle, and luckily for my friend, the cop was interested in cars.
“Is this one of those hybrids, sir?” he asked.
Grateful for the distrac on, Jan said enthusias cally: “Yes, yes it is. Great car.”
“So, is it really quiet when you drive on electric?” the cop asked “Yes, wonderfully quiet,” said Jan.
Then he saw his chance: “Would you like to hear how quiet it is?”
The cop said he would and Jan started up and drove off, watching the cop get smaller in his rear-view mirror
“I couldn’t believe my luck!” Indeed.
The government published its policy paper on electric vehicles last November, and said the global automo ve industry was undergoing one of the biggest shi s in its 150-year-old history. Regulators and consumers, who have all felt the effects of climate change with increased floods and fires, droughts and heat waves, are demanding vehicles with low or no carbon emissions.
With our major export markets the UK and EU banning new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035, South Africa needs to start producing electric vehicles at scale soon. Eleven years is not long.
We don’t want to be le behind by the global car industry - like that outsmarted cop in my friend’s rear-view mirror.

The Agenda for the meeting will be as follows:
• To adopt the minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting
• To receive, consider and adopt the Annual Report of the Society’s Committee on the affairs of the Society
• To receive, consider and approve the Financial Statements of the Society together with the Auditor’s Report
• To elect the members of the Committee
• To deal with any relevant business within the competence of the meeting and in respect of which the Chairperson has received prior written notice not less than 7 (seven) days before the Meeting
• To appoint an Auditor in compliance with the requirements of the Non-Profit Organisation Act of 1997
Persons wishing to make themselves available for election to the Committee and who have been nominated by a member in good standing of the Society must submit their names in writing to the Chairperson, to arrive no later than 7 (seven) clear days prior to the Annual General Meeting. Each such submission must be accompanied by a written nomination and the nominee’s acceptance of her or his nomination, and must be submitted to the Chairperson along with a brief, one-page curriculum vitae or motivation which shall be made available for members to read at the Annual General Meeting.
