Best Time to be Alive is Now
We face a stack of problems in the world, don’t we?
Some seem so massive that many feel a sense of doom –par cularly young people who believe their future has been screwed by things like climate change.
Well, here’s some good news from a young Sco sh data scien st Hannah Ritchie: “The biggest myth is that we’re doomed and there is nothing we can do about it. It’s completely out of line with science.”
Ritchie, who was an anxious teenager herself, has wri en a book called It’s Not the End of the World in which she argues that many of our huge problems can be solved, especially environmental problems.
Now a researcher at Oxford University, Ritchie says there has probably never been a be er me to be alive than today.
For most of human history 50% of children died before their teens. Now it’s less than 4%. For most of human history most people lived on less than the equivalent of $2 a day. Now it is only 10%.
From global educa on to food supplies, life expectancy and human rights, the world is a be er place today.
“Air pollu on in rich countries is a frac on of what it was. We’ve made huge progress in addressing extreme poverty, child mortality and maternal mortality.”
This progress has been very unequal around the world, and lots more needs to be done.
Carbon emissions in the UK have halved. The world produces enough to feed 9 or 10 billion people, and it is “en rely possible” to end destruc on of rain forests.
The price of wind and solar power has dropped enormously and they’re now cheap and easy to build at scale very quickly
Crop yields have rocketed, so we can grow more food on less land.
Twelve years ago we were on a global warming trajectory of 4 to 5 degrees. Today we are on a track of 2.5 to 3. S ll too far high, but we’ve reduced it.
But here’s the thing: although so much has got be er it has o en come at the expense of the environment.
“There is rising CO2, rising temperatures, plas c pollu on, fer lizer use etc and people o en feel doomed. I know I have in the past. But looking at the data, I’ve become much more op mis c,” Ritchie says.
A big culprit is food and agriculture, responsible for about 25% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
One of the biggest emi ers is the red meat industry - and the leading cause for cu ng down forests.
A 100g serving of beef is equivalent to 15kg of greenhouse gases –what you would emit by driving 78km.
Here’s the bit you probably won’t like. Ritchie says the world needs to shi towards plant-based diets.
