Knysna’s Serengeti of the South STOEP CHAT

I needed a break from all the horrible news of missiles and bombs on our screens so dived into the past – Knysna’s past – about 26,000 years ago.

What a diﬀerent world!

The Heads and the Outeniqua Mountains were sll here, but no ocean. Can you imagine standing at The Heads and not seeing the sea?

This came from an arcle published last week by an archaeologist who had been working on a dig in a cave on the eastern Head. I had no idea they were digging there.

So why no ocean lapping our shores 26,000 years ago?

Because of the Ice Age. Most of the land in the northern hemisphere was covered in enormous ice sheets, some 4km thick. The water that froze to make the ice sheets came from the ocean, which was then “locked up” in the ice for thousands of years. This meant the sea level around the world dropped hugely. Along the southern Cape coast this exposed the shallow connental shelf we know as the Agulhas Bank.

This shelf gradually became covered with vegetaon and created a vast grassy plain where the sea is today. The shore was 75km away from where Knysna is now, and 250km away at Cape Agulhas.

So our ancestors who stood at The Heads cave, dressed in their skins, perhaps with ostrich eggshell necklaces, would have looked across land as far as the eye could see, filled with herds of antelope, buffalo, zebra and giraffe - and predators – and the rivers, probably the Knysna River too, were filled with hippo and crocs.

Some researchers call this plain “The Serenge of the South.”

Temperatures were much lower than today during the Ice Ages, but it was not nearly as cold here as it was in the frozen northern hemisphere.

Sciensts have done modeling to see what the climate was like back then, and say our Garden Route ancestors would have had a windier and drier climate, with rainfall spread throughout the year. There were also likely to be berg winds in winter, so probably ﬁres. The ancient people may even have started such ﬁres to encourage new veld growth to aract game.

Archaeologist Sara Watson, who studied stone tools from The Heads dig, said people had been using the cave for much of the last 48,000 years.

Before the last Ice Age, when the sea levels were higher, these people were collecng shellﬁsh and other marine life.

“As the climate began to cool and sea levels dropped, they shied their focus to game animals,” Watson wrote.

Between about 40,000 and 25,000 years ago there were “dramac changes” in how people made stone tools, shiing to diﬀerent types of stone and smaller tools. This is reﬂected in the tools she found.

Although the ancient Knysna area was so completely diﬀerent from today, Watson says the Ice Age people who lived here were not very diﬀerent from us. They made tools, art and music and connected with people in other communies.

“We have a very long and rich history as a species, and our innovave and social natures go back a lot further in me than most people realise.”
