The Wonders of Wood STOEP CHAT
I was astonished to hear a fellow wood lover tell me recently that his aunt had painted an an que wooden table white.
“I said: ‘But tannie, how can you do that!’ She just said: ‘Ag, no one likes dark wood anymore.’ I was upset. I would have bought it from her rather,” James said.
I agreed. It felt like sacrilege to both of us.
I come from a family who loves wood and we treasure our few an que s nkwood and yellowwood erfstukke – not only because of the beauty of the wood, but also because they come from Knysna’s magnificent forests where the trees were felled by hand by Knysna’s legendary woodcu ers. Such stories behind them!
I loved reading local author Winnie Tapson’s old account of mee ng
Oom Hansie van Rooyen, a woodcu er who died in 1959 aged 94. He was born in 1865 – a different world.
Oom Hansie, who had nine children, lived in the Piesang Valley near Ple in a whitewashed co age with yellowwood floors and s nkwood furniture.
He had been in charge of a team of woodcu ers who worked in the Gouna and Diepwalle areas. It was tough work and it would take a team of 10 men a full day to cut down a 6m high yellowwood.
“Ja, ons het in die ou dae baie gesukkel,” Oom Hansie said.
Oxen dragged the felled trees through the forest to Ple enberg Bay where a ship lay wai ng.
Barges took the logs out through the surf and a ship’s crane hoisted them aboard.

When he was younger he lived in a small house made of planks in the forest, which didn’t feel very safe when herds of elephant came wandering around.
Oom Hansie had his share of close shaves with elephants.
“Elephants are a wonderful cure for rheuma sm,” he told Tapson. “I can’t walk for the rheuma sm. But if an elephant chases me, I find I am cured!” he laughed.
The ships would take its cargo to the sawmills in Knysna, and further afield too. From the late 18th century, Knysna’s forests supplied wood for the Bri sh naval fleet.
Once cut and seasoned some of the wood was made into furniture – like those erfstukke I have today.
So I felt James’s pain when his tannie took a can of white paint to one of these old pieces. I guess she did it because dark wood went out of fashion and it’s been blonde, grey or whitewashed “stressed” wood for ages.
But, you know, fashions go round and round.
I checked online today and found that dark wood is making a comeback, “driven by a renewed apprecia on for an que styles and the warmth and richness that dark wood brings to a space”
I am not big on interior design fashions, but I am glad that furniture with histories will be dusted off and used again, and con nue their stories for years to come.
I love the comment by US architect Frank Lloyd Wright: “Wood is universally beau ful to man. It is the most humanly in mate of all materials.”
