Shark Nets Killed Over 1000 Great Whites

I was sad to read that a tagged great white shark had been killed last week by the lethal drumlines of KZN.

Great whites are protected in South Africa - yet the authories connue to kill them with nets and drumlines.

The shark nets at KZN beaches, deployed by the KZN Sharks Board, are not designed as a barrier to keep sharks out of bathing areas. They are designed to kill sharks that get entangled in them. The idea is the more sharks that are killed the fewer there will be to endanger swimmers.

The Sharks Board also uses drumlines, baited hooks that hang from anchored ﬂoats. The bait aracts the sharks that become entangled and die.

I spoke to University of Stellenbosch shark researcher Sara Andreo about the death of the tagged shark. Sara, who is in France aending the United Naons’ summit on the world’s oceans, said the shark had been tagged by a researcher in Mossel Bay.

“It was sll a juvenile so it didn’t even have a chance to reproduce,” Sara said.

And it’s a loss to research because no more data will come from this young shark that could have transmied informaon for years.

Between 1978 and 2018 over a thousand great white sharks were killed in KZN’s nets and drumlines.

“They’re basically using gill nets, which are illegal in South Africa, but the Sharks Board gets special permits to have them. I don’t know how the authories jusfy this. The whole global movement is towards ocean conservaon.”

Why does the Sharks Board not move this way too?

“I don’t know. It’s hard to change the mindset of an 80-year-old organisaon.”

In response to the tagged shark death on a drumline, Environment Minister Dion George issued a statement on Sunday saying he was commied to “striving for a balance between shark conservaon and bather safety” and that his department was acvely supporng research into “innovave, non-lethal technologies to deter sharks from bathing areas”.

When I read that to Sara she replied: “Oh great! That’s made my day.”

But when I read that one of the methods his department was considering was the electronic cable system, she was less enthusiasc.

“That system has failed.”

Sara is one of four co-inventors of the SharkSafe Barrier that the University of Stellenbosch has patented.

When designing it, they looked at shark behaviour ﬁrst. Sharks don’t like conﬁned spaces so avoid kelp forest.

They also have a unique ability to sense minute amounts of electricity, such as those produced by muscle contracons in prey.

The SharkSafe Barrier, a series of ﬂexible rod-like instruments anchored to the seabed – a bit like kelp – has a strong magnec ﬁeld that overpowers sharks’ electroreceptors. They don’t like that so they move away.

But other marine animals swim among the rods without a care. These have already been successfully installed at beaches in the Bahamas.

It would be good if Minister George chose these as an alternave to nets and drumliines.

“For sharks to survive, we need to make an acve eﬀort,” Sara said.

“I liked what the president of Costa Rica said: ‘Vision without acon is hallucinaon’”
