Margaret Elizabeth Parkes (neé Fraser), local author and pillar of the Knysna th community, will celebrate her 100 birthday on Saturday st She was born on 21 June 1925 to Donald and Ellen Fraser. Her parents and parents-in-law, Howard & Winifred Parkes, played prominent roles in church, social and civic affairs in Knysna, and both Donald Fraser and Howard Parkes served as mayors of Knysna.
Margaret's father owned the Royal Hotel which still carries the name Fraser's Royal Hotel in relief on the hotel wall.
Margaret started school in 1931 at Concordia Forest Station and then went to Knysna High School, Collegiate Girls' School and did further studies at Rhodes University and the CapeTechnical College in CapeTown.
In 1949 she moved to HealdtownTraining School at Fort Beaufort where she trainedAfrican teachers. In 1952 she married Howard Bernard Parkes of Knysna and they had 2 sons, George & Jim.
Margaret has been involved in many community activities including: Library:As chair of Friends of the Knysna Library she raised funds for the library and was instrumental in ensuring that it had a comprehensive, unique book collection on Knysna, and commissioned a cabinet to house the collection. She and the committee ensured theAfricana book collection was properly cared for by cleaning cupboards and polishing leather-bound books.
Millwood Museum: She and two like-minded citizens were instrumental in founding Millwood Museum where Margaret was its first Curator for 18 years.They collected and organised memorabilia, historical records and photographs for the Museum. She wrote the Millwood House Museum Newsletters (65 issues).As chair of the Friends of Millwood House she acquired three buildings for the Museum complex, two of which came from Geo. Parkes & Sons when they moved the mill to the industrial site.
The Old Gaol Complex: When the Municipality aquired this for anArt Gallery and repository for historical items, Margaret was instrumental in organising the Thesen Collection, the Maritime Display and Miss Ave Duthie Display.
Books: With her friend, the late Vicky Wiliams, Margaret wrote over 20 books and booklets on Knysna and surrounding district. One of her best-known is Knysna: The Forgotten Port, a maritime history Another is Vanishing Knysna, an historical record of many of Knysna's old buildings, written to help preserve them from demolition and development. She was one of the editors and chief collector of content for the popular Memories of Knysna and More Memories of Knysna books, a collection of reminiscences from residents who knew the town in the early days.
Margaret's personal collection of books, records, photographs, letters and postcards about Knysna is of significant historical value to Knysna and SouthAfrica. Margaret is still consulted on various aspects of the history of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay
Benches: Margaret has raised funds for or donated several benches in memory of Knysna people, placed around town for public use.
St George's Church: Margaret has been a life-long member of St George'sAnglican Church and the Parish Council, and anAlternate Church Warden. For years she raised money for the church flower fund by catering for church functions and managing the church market book stall. She cared for the Church's historical records and recorded the history of church furnishings.
Knysna Red Cross Society:As a member Margaret raised funds by catering for functions which enabled the Society to endow cottages in the Red Cross Home in Port Elizabeth.
Ladies Benevolent Society:As a member she was an active fund-raiser for the welfare of the poorer community in Knysna. (Unfortunately this Society is no longer operational.)
KnysnaYacht Club: Margaret is the oldest lady member of theYacht Club. She regularly sailed with her brothers and later with her husband Bernard. She catered for functions, especially while her husband was Commodore and assisted her son, Jim, when he was Commodore. Her “Mrs Parkes'Teas” were a feature of major events.
Knysna Sea Cadets: She was honoured for her support when they named their refurbished three-in-one whaler the Margaret Parkes. Awards:
•The Molteno Medal in 2000 from the CapeTercentenary Foundation in recognition for her role in collecting and preserving Knysna's cultural heritage.
•The Simon van der Stel Foundation Certificate of Recognition in 1994 and 2012 for her contribution to the conservation of Knysna's architectural heritage.
• Rotary's Paul Harris FellowshipAward in 2007 for her contribution to the documentation of Knysna's history
• Knysna High School's award in 2022 of an 'Oscar' for “growing old gracefully and still involved”.
•ALifetimeAchievementAward in 2013 at the inaugural KnysnaAwards ceremony.

All Packed but No Flights Home
Right now an old friend Mags is twiddling her thumbs in Kazakhstan. She works there and was due to fly home this weekend, but flights have been cancelled. No airline wants to get caught in the cross fire of Israeli and Iranian missiles.
Mags supports her South African family by teaching at interna onal schools because they pay far be er
All she wants is a quiet life, but her overseas teaching career has been fraught with problems.
UAE and Oman were fine, but then the interna onal school where she taught in Rwanda ran out of money. She needed a new job quickly Libya came up and she accepted.
Man, what a me. This was 2013, two years a er Gaddafi was killed. The school was in Benghazi and the teachers lived in a walled complex because of the armed conflict between government troops and mili a.
“One night a tank was blown up two streets away. Everything shook so much we thought it was an earthquake.”
But people tend to normalise situa ons, so they con nued teaching.
Then their school principal, a Brit, was abducted, around the same me that the Benghazi airport was bombed. The school closed and the foreign teachers tried to leave.
But how? Tripoli airport was a 12-hour drive through conflict zones.
Then a school driver organised an escape route. He loaded them in a van and drove for three hours through the desert to a small airport in the south.
“He told us to cover our heads so we did not a ract a en on. We were really scared of roadblocks because any of the mili a can set them up. But luckily a sandstorm started so the roadblock mili a stayed in their tents.”
When they arrived at the airport, it was chaos: hundreds of foreigners trying to get home but no planes could take off because of the sandstorm. There were even fis ights.
Eventually the sandstorm stopped and they got home.
Mags is over 60, the cut-off age at most interna onal schools, so she has to go where they don’t mind about age. So her next job was in Eritrea, a really poor country
All went well un l the Covid epidemic broke out. The country could not cope and closed its airports.
“So we were stuck there and really scared because if we got Covid, there was no way we could get proper treatment.”
Eventually Eritrea allowed some airlines in and she got out.
A er Covid, her next job was in Russia. All was fine – un l Russia invaded Ukraine.
Oh my. The western countries shut down flights and banking and Mags was stuck – again.
“We couldn’t get paid because of the interna onal ac on against Russian banks.”
Eventually, with its connec ons to the US, the school managed to pay them in cash, and one of the middle-eastern airlines flew them home.
“I had $12,000 in cash which is over the limit, so I lined my bra with the money. It felt like one of those upli bras.”
Next came Kazakhstan - and now the Israelis and Iranians are exchanging missiles.
So hold thumbs guys.
And be glad if your biggest problems are blocked drains and low water pressure.
