hegamos à nossa 10ª edição da revista eletrônica Acho Digno e quem diria que em dois anos de existência conseguiríamos realizar tantos sonhos?! Uma revista que pauta moda, comunicação, cultura, educação, tudo relacionado à questão racial. Tudo relacionado ao nosso bem viver. Tentamos transmitir a arte do nosso semelhante nessas páginas de forma digna, fazendo o correio nagô ecoar nos quatro cantos do mundo. Sim, no mundo, pois já conseguimos chegar à Tânzania, Angola, Senegal, França, Alemanha, Estônia, diversos estados brasileiros e agora tivemos a oportunidade de ir para Nova Iorque conhecer um pouco da “capital do mundo” para poder compartilhar conhecimentos, informações e experiências como os nossos leitores.

Por meio do projeto Identidades Transatlânticas, contemplado com apoio financeiro do Edital Mobilidade Artística 2016, da Secretaria de Cultura do Estado da Bahia (SecultBA), a revista eletrônica Acho Digno participou de uma residência artística de dois meses (agosto e setembro), em Nova Iorque, com o intuito de conhecer outras mídias negras e um pouco da cultura e arte do Bronx, Harlem e Brooklyn. A escolha desses lugares se justifica por se caracterizarem como centros culturais, com uma grande parcela de moradores negros nesses locais com tradições que se mantêm com o passar dos anos. São lugares marcados e conhecidos por sua arte, cultura e lutas negras. Distritos que são o berço de diversos talentos na área da música, do cinema, da moda e do teatro. O intuito destse projeto é poder ser capaz de destrinchar os acontecimentos do ocidente negro para além das fronteiras territoriais e conseguir dialogar como bons aliados nesse mundo dae cultura digital.

New York City (NYC) – Ao chegar à cidade escutamos jazz no Harlem, vimos cultura hip hop forte no Bronx, contemplamos shows de Janelle Monae, Ice Cube no Brooklyn. Vimos pessoas negras estilosas por toda parte. Trocamos olhares, trocamos sorrisos, tivemos algum tipo de comunicação e produzimos algumas matérias que poderão ser conferidas nestas páginas da primeira edição internacional da Acho Digno. A NYC, ou Nova Iorque para nós brasileiros, é uma cidade que exerce enorme impacto social e cultural em todo mundo por meio do seu comércio, finanças, mídia, arte, moda, pesquisa, tecnologia e educação. Ela é considerada como a capital cultural do mundo com a maior comunidade afro americana. As indústrias criativas, como novas mídias, publicidade, desing e arquitetura representam uma parcela crescente do em-

prego. Se tratando de comunicação, a cidade é o principal centro em massa da América do Norte. É o local que mais sedia companhias de mídia e comunicações do país. A maioria das grandes editoras de revistas dos Estados Unidos está sediada em Nova Iorque. É identificada como um local altamente ativo e multicultural.

Imprensa Negra –No Brasil é comum falar em mídia negra alternativa, porém em Nova Iorque foi possível constatar que fizeram dessa oportunidade um grande mercado financeiro e de grande potencial. Em relação ao segmento de revistas afro, os Estados Unidos possuem um dos mais extensos e importantes mercados.

Segundo dados da ONG MPA (The Association of Magazine Media), são cerca de 200 publicações voltadas para esse público. Esse mercado editorial norte americano é uns dos mais bem

A magazine that guides fashion, communication, culture, education, everything related to the racial issue. Everything related to our well being. We try to convey the art of our fellow man on these pages in a dignified manner, making the NagĂ´ mail echo in the four corners of the world. Yes, in the world, because we have already reached Tanzania, Angola, Senegal, France, Germany, Estonia, several Brazilian states and now we have the opportunity to go to New York to get to know the "capital of the world" in order to share knowledge, information And experiences with our readers.

Through the Transatlantic Identities project, with the financial support of the 2016 Artistic Mobility Announcement of the Bahia State Department of Culture (SecultBA), the electronic magazine Acho Digno participated in a two-mon-

ths artistic residence (August and September) in New York, in order to meet other black media and some of the culture and art of the Bronx, Harlem and Brooklyn.

The choice of these places is justified by being characterized as cultural centers with a large proportion of black residents with traditions that continue over the years.

They are places marked and known for their art, culture and black fights. Districts that are the cradle of diverse talents in the area of music, cinema, fashion and theater. The aim of this project is to be able to disentangle the events of the black West beyond the territorial borders and to be able to dialogue as good allies in this world of the digital culture.

New York City (NYC) - Upon reaching the city we hear jazz in Harlem, saw strong hip hop culture in the Bronx, watched Janelle Monae shows, Ice Cube in Brooklyn. We saw stylish black people everywhere. We exchanged glances, exchanged smiles, had some kind of communication and produced some material that can be checked in these pages of the first international edition of Acho Digno. NYC, or Nova Iorque for us Brazilians, is a city that has enormous social and cultural impact throughout the world through its trade, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology and education. It's considered as the cultural capital of the world with the largest African American community. Creative industries such as new media, advertising, design and architecture represent a growing share of employment. When it comes to communication, the city is the main mass center of North America. It's the location that most hosts media and communications companies in the country. Most major magazine publishers in the United States are based in New York. It is identified as a highly active and multicultural place.

Black Press - In Brazil, it is common to speak of alternative black media, but in New York it was possible to see that they made this opportunity a great financial market with great potential. In relation to the segment of Afro magazines, the United States has one of the most important

estruturado com uma rica diversidade na gama de publicações e é um nicho com publicações muitos específicas. Tais publicações souberam acompanhar e pautar a constante evolução da sociedade, interpretando o mundo moderno do seu público sem subestimá-los.

Essa realidade é um reflexo de uma série de conjunturas sociais, econômicas e culturais. São publicações com textos bem trabalhados, com projeto editorial que valoriza a força da palavra, da imagem e que busca o equilíbrio entre a escrita acadêmica, artística e jornalística. São revistas que prezam pelo seu conteúdo.

Tratar a partir da perspectiva do individuo negro com profundidade, sem a simples preocupação em formar mais meros consumidores, e sim leitores interessados e/ou engajados em uma causa.

O mercado editorial negro norte americano já esta fortemente estabelecido e respeitado. Exemplos dessa afirmação são das revistas Essence e Ebony que juntas somam quase dois milhões de assinantes. Essas revistas entre outras mídias negras como: The Grio, Black Voices, The Root, Clucth Magazine, Black New, continuam a oxigenar o pensamento do cidadão negro contemporâneo, pois tais publicações reforçam uma mensagem de empoderamento da comunidade negra norte americana.PortantoPor tanto, por meio da revista eletrônica Acho Digno a proposta é poder continuar o dialogo entre as comunidades afro brasileira e afro estadunidense.

O que podemos fazer com a escrita?A partir desses dados, é possível começar a analisar a importância dessas publicações destinadas ao público afro para a criação de uma identidade com uma representatividade positiva que está preocupada em retratar esse indivíduo de forma digna.

Seja como for e no espaço que tivermos, precisamos ter o compromisso de compartilhar experiências e refletir sobre cada passo dado, buscando as melhores soluções para a evolução de um coletivo. Segundo o diretor e fundador do

Conhecimento é poder. No momento em que uma Secretaria de Cultura acredita e apóia um projeto de imprensa negra e cultura digital, ela possibilita a nossa existência e permanência no cenário. Because I am a college professor who teaches about fashion, popular culture, and race, I love to wear clothes and accessories that are stylish and unique, but that also command attention. I rarely wear flat shoes, and I am known on campus for my vintage, tortoise-shell eyeglasses. I love this dress because it has two tones and is two lengths.

In the front, it is short and cream and in the back, it is long and black. But what I love most is how it moves when I walk and in the wind. At night, I would add a black leather jacket, spiky heels, and red lipstick to complete the look.

epois de assistir aquela comédia romântica com muitos beijos no Central Park ou aquele drama clássico ambientado no Brooklyn dos anos 80, você já deve ter imaginado como seria conhecer Nova Iorque. Com mais de oito milhões de habitantes, a cidade que Hollywood colocou nos nossos sonhos, é amplamente considerada a capital cultural do planeta.

Nesta edição, a revista Acho Digno foi às ruas para saber como é a New York City (NYC) que habita o imaginário dos baianos. E se você achou que ninguém aqui liga para o que acontece lá na Big Apple, essa matéria vai te surpreender.

Rafael Aguiar (foto) é o típico Swag Boy (homem estiloso), com um visual urbano e despojado, o jogador amador de basquete conta que se inspira em alguns ícones novaiorquinos na hora compor seus looks.

"Tupac, Jay Z e 50 Cent que eu aprecio desde infância, são rappers que tiveram bastante influência no meu gosto musical e também no jeito de me vestir e por incrível que pareça, todos eles são novaiorquinos".

Outra grande inspiração para Rafael é a estrela do New York Knicks, Carmelo Antony. Recordista de pontos nas olimpíadas, o jogador emergiu como um dos mais populares da National Basketball Association (NBA), principal liga de basquetebol profissional da América do Norte. “Carmelo serviu de molde para minha formação como atleta e como pessoa porque ele desenvolve vários projetos sociais em comunidades negras como forma de inclusão social de jovens através do esporte”, comentou Aguiar.

Já a cidade que povoa os sonhos do jornalista e maquiador, Tássio Santos, é a que fez história nas passarelas e revistas de moda. Nova Iorque, que foi a primeira cidade do mundo a abrigar semanas de moda, hoje é endereço do museu do Instituto de Moda e Tecnologia de Nova Iorque (F.I.T) que exibe a história por meio de fotos, cortes de tecidos, roupas, sa-

Coisa que os baianos valorizam é a diversidade cultural novaiorquina, eles sabem que a metrópole atrai gente do mundo todo em busca de liberdade, emprego e dinheiro, por isso, imaginam encontrar efervescência na cidade.

“A representação principal que eu tenho de Nova Iorque é de ser uma cidade cosmopolita e culturalmente rica, deve haver uma imensa diversidade sociocultural do ponto de vista dos grupos sociais e étnicos. Isso é o que mais me atrai na cidade”, declarou a psicóloga Carolina Alcântara que planeja visitar a metrópole em breve.

Filmes e Séries Pedimos para cada um dos entrevistados listar títulos de filmes e séries que ajudaram a compor o seu imaginário a cerca de Nova Iorque. Não foi uma tarefa difícil, já que a cidade é palco de centenas de produções de todos os gêneros.

No topo da lista das mais lembrados está Sexy and the City (Sexo e a Cidade), a premiada série de televisão norte americana baseada em um livro com o mesmo nome de autoria conjunta de Candace Bushnell, Scott B. Smith e Michael Crichton.

Passada na cidade de Nova Iorque, a comédia cujo enfoque era as relações íntimas de quatro amigas, também abordava discussões relevantes como o papel da mulher na sociedade atual. Segundo Tássio, que é fã e acompanhou todas as seis temporadas da trilogia, a cidade era como um quinto personagem da série. “O que eu mais gostava era de como a direção explorava a cidade”, comentou Santos.

Arquitetura Mirela, que é design de interiores, comentou ainda sobre o seu encantamento com a arquitetura da metrópole. Nova Iorque é conhecida mundialmente pelos seus arranha-céus e edifícios famosos como o Empire State construído no estilo ArtDeco, marcado pelo requinte e geometrização.

Nova Iorque ilustrada Com base nos depoimentos, a tatuadora Jéssica Rodrigues reproduziu no papel a Nova Iorque que povoa o imaginário dos baianos. Ela conta que a experiência de ilustrar também despertou nela a vontade de conhecer a cidade. Já Marcos da Mata, comenta que achou interessante poder ilustrar numa só imagem todas as referências que ele tinha na cabeça. “Logo lembrei da série da Netflix, The Get Down, a série Todo Mundo Odeia o Chris, da cultura Hip Hop e um dos seus principais expoentes, o rapper Jay Z, as joias, os carros, basquete, a Estátua da Liberdade e o grafite,” explicou o artista visual.

estação de metrô até o Commodore Barry Park foram uns 20 minutos caminhando. Naquela manhã de sábado o metrô estava encantador, as ruas do Brooklyn estavam especiais. E eu completamente encantada, parecia uma criança ansiosa para a sua primeira tarde no parque. Final de semana de Afropunk Fest é assim em Nova Iorque, muita gente preta, bonita e cheia de estilo desfilando pelo bairro do Brooklyn.

O meu encantamento naquele parque era imenso. Foi a minha a primeira vez em Nova Iorque e eu escolhi justamente o mês de agosto de 2016 porque eu queria viver está emoção.

Poder estar em um festival pra chamar de meu. Um festival feito pra gente preta e por gente preta, com cantores pretos, com público preto, com alma preta.

RO UNK marcado Afropunk: a festival that belong to us From the subway station to the Commodore Barry Park, the walk took about 20 minute. That Saturday morning, the subway was lovely, the streets of Brooklyn were special. I was completely delighted, like an excited child waiting for her first afternoon in a park. It was an immense enchatement. That was my first time in New York, and the reason I chose August 2016 was my wish to experience that. Enjoying a festival that I could call ‘mine’. A festival created by black people and for black people, with black music, black audience, black soul.

Não se sentir sozinho, sentir-se parte, ter certeza de estar no lugar certo pra mim e que aquelas pessoas que estão ao meu redor sabem o que eu estou sentindo. Quando James Spooner filmou Afropunk, The documentary eu acredito que ele procurava a mesma identificação que eu fui buscar na 12ª edição do festival.

Em 2001, Spooner era um jovem de 23 anos quando começou a filmar o documentário que deu origem ao festival. Fascinado por punk rock, Spooner procurava outros jovens negros que como ele eram apaixonados por um movimento musical estreitamente branco. Ele queria conhecer negros que gostassem de punk e que quisessem discutir o ser negro num país em que o racismo se apresentava com cores bem fortes e nítidas.

O documentário de Spooner foi filmado entre 2001 e 2003 e mostra a história de quatro jovens negros na cena punk. Quando foi lançado em 2003 fez bastante sucesso, principalmente, por ser não só um filme sobre black punk rock, mas por representar um número grande de pessoas que assim como Spooner buscavam identificação, pertencer a um grupo que tivesse as mesmas emoções.

I cant’t find words to describe the belonging feeling. Not feel alone, being part of it, feeling confident. It was like being in the right place and those people around me shared that feeling. When James Spooner filmed ‘Afropunk, The documentary’ I guess he seeked the same identification I got in the 12th edition of the festival.

In 2001, Spooner was a young man, 23 years old, and he began filming the scenes that made the festival to rise. Fascinated by punk rock, Spooner looked for other young blacks that, as himself, were passionate about a narrowly white musical movement.

A música pode ser a plataforma principal, mas o Afropunk também tem espaço para afro empreendedores venderem seus produtos. Na feira Spinthrift, que acontece durante o festival, os artesãos independentes vendem roupas, produtos naturais de beleza, joias, bijuterias, arte, bolsas, sapatos, tudo com a temática africana como inspiração.

Desde 2015, o festival não se restringe mais ao bairro do Brooklyn’s Fort Greene em Nova Iorque, ganhou Atlanta, Paris e Londres. Dizem as boas línguas que em 2018 o Brasil terá o privilégio de fazer parte deste movimento e Salvador será o palco para o evento.

Vamos esperar, eu já comecei a sonhar. Olhar para todos os lados, enxergar todo as essas pessoas pretas e lindas e ver que não há nada de errado com você. Isso é Afropunk.

Mesmo assim, inúmeros elementos, como direção de arte enchem os olhos do espectador, os figurinos elaborados e detalhados fazem com que tenhamos vontade de estar lá naquela época.

Apesar de todos os elementos de uma super produção e do alto nível de investimento, de acordo com a SymohnyAM (empresa que mede a audiência de diferentes mídias através das redes sociais e números colaterais) a série mais cara da Netflix foi um fracasso no primeiro mês de lançamento, não atingindo nem a metade da audiência da maioria das séries originais do site. Entretanto esse fracasso de audiência pode ser relacionado ao universo adolescente presente na trama de Ezekiel e Mylene, uma vez que a narrativa da trama gira em torno dos sonhos, dilemas e ambições de jovens negros e latinos da periferia nova-iorquina, e sejamos sensatos que a maioria das pessoas que têm acessibilidade a assinatura do Netflix pouco se interessa pela história, cultura e dramas da periferia negra.

ronx, um amor inexorável! Há muito que dizer desse local para além do surgimento do movimento Hip Hop. O projeto Identidades Transatlânticas prevê conhecer um pouco da cultura e arte de três locais, são eles: Bronx, Brooklyn e Harlem. No “Olhar Estrangeiro”, nos dividimos em três para que cada uma possa escrever um pouco sobre esses lugares.

Por um mês o Bronx foi a minha nova morada. A jornalista paulista, Cristiane Guterres, de passeio em Nova Iorque fez do Brooklyn o seu habitar natural.

E a jornalista mineira, Elis Clementino, que reside na cidade e trabalha no Harlem, nos revela encantos desse mundo negro que vive atuante em cada parte por qual circulamos.

A foreign look Ao pensarmos nos dias atuais na famosa e glamurosa Nova Iorque nem podemos imaginar que nos anos 1970 ela enfrentava uma crise e um enorme abandono. Inserida em um contexto nacional de estagnação econômica, a metrópole lidava com taxas de criminalidade recorde e uma crise fiscal que quase fez declarar falência perante o governo federal em 1975.

Incêndios Criminosos: Esse tipo de ação era tão frequente que a frase “o Bronx está pegando fogo” se tornou um jargão. No entanto, a decadência impulsionava novos movimentos, tais como as cenas punk, disco, latina, e o surgimento do hip hop, tudo acontecendo ao mesmo tempo. O Bronx, que fica ao norte da cidade e é separado de Manhattan pelo rio Harlem, foi uma região que por muito tempo ficou esquecida pelo poder público. Nos anos 1970, o Bronx era quase inabitável. As altas taxas de desemprego e de pobreza alavancaram crimes e o uso de drogas. ronx, an inexorable love! There’s a lot to be said for this venue beyond the rise of the Hip Hop movement. The Transatlantic Identities project provides for a glimpse into the culture and art of three locations: Bronx, Brooklyn, and Harlem. In a “Foreign Look”, we divide ourselves into three so that each one can write a little about these places. For a month the Bronx was my new address. The São Paulo journalist, Cristiane Guterres, on tour in New York made Brooklyn her natural habitation. And the journalist from Minas Gerais, Elis Clementino, who lives in the city and works in Harlem, reveals to us charms of this black world that lives in every part through which we circulate.

When we think of today in the famous and glamorous New York we can not imagine that in the 1970s it faced a crisis and a great abandonment. Inserted in a national context of economic stagnation, the metropolis dealt with record crime rates and a fiscal crisis that almost made bankruptcy before the federal government in 1975.

Criminal Fires: This type of action was so frequent that the phrase "the Bronx is on fire" has become a jargon.

However, decadence drove new moves, such as punk, disco, latin, and the rise of hip hop, all happening at the same time. A série “The Get Down”, (leia mais no artigo de Jô Karlson nas próximas páginas), com elementos factuais e fictícios narra o surgimento do gênero musical no Bronx dos anos 1970 e o blecaute é retratado como um ponto de inflexão na trajetória de um grupo de amigos que ambicionam se tornarem Djs e MCs. Uma série próxima da realidade. Antes do apagão, alguns DJs já eram reconhecidos na cena cultural, tais como: Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaata & The SoulSonic Force (depois chamados de Zulu Nation), Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Disco Wiz e Grandmaster Caz e o Funky Four Plus One. A cultura urbana de Nova Iorque, a crise de gestão da cidade, a mistura racial do Bronx e os problemas sociais do bairro de população expressivamente afro latina formavam um ambiente propicio para o surgimento de diversos talentos. Pessoas que encontravam na arte e na cultura uma forma de sobrevivência. Ao entrevistar moradores dessa região era possível ver em seus olhares a paixão pelo local de origem. Certa vez, um amigo brasileiro me perguntou se o Bronx era parecido com as periferias do Brasil. Não é nada pare¬cido. O Bronx tem estrutura. As periferias do Brasil não são lugares para um cidadão viver de forma digna com esgoto a céu aberto e sem saneamento básico. Em comparação com o Brasil, a única coisa que pode ser comparada é à distância desses bairros populares com o centro da cidade. Quem mora em Salvador é como se o Bronx ficasse em Águas Claras, ou São Paulo seria na Zona Leste e em Porto Alegre na Restinga. O Bronx é um bairro acolhedor, multicultural e continua sendo o destino de imigrantes.

Muitos latinos e caribenhos vivem nessa região e o que atrai mais pessoas para esse local são os imóveis a preços acessíveis juntamente com a queda da criminalidade.

Gangues: É preciso compreender o contexto social e político da região do Bronx para entender o surgimento de diversas gangues.

O bairro foi se degradando pela desindustrialização e falta de investimento do governo. Com isso, o desemprego e a violência começaram a aumentar. Em busca de solidariedade, segurança e até mesmo diversão, os jovens montaram as gangues. A história das gangues do Bronx serviu de inspiração para a criação de vários romances e filmes. As gangues nos mostram o descaso do governo e a adaptabilidade da sociedade diante de circunstâncias externas.

Por meio da arte é possível uma transformação. Um exemplo dessa afirmação é o DJ Afrika Bambaataa, que transformou a gangue Black Spades na primeira crew de hip hop, a Universal Zulu Nation. Essa paz teria um efeito cascata cultural em todo o mundo.

Um ativismo político foi instalado em muitas dessas gangues, pois eles estavam protegendo seu bairro. Juntaram essa energia e transformaram em algo positivo de diferentes maneiras para contribuir para um bem coletivo.

New York's urban culture, the city's management crisis, the racial mix of the Bronx, and the social problems of the neighborhood of an expressively Afro-Latino population provided a conducive environment for the emergence of diverse talents.

People who found in art and culture a way of survival. When interviewing residents of this region it was possible to see in their eyes the passion for the place of origin. Once a Brazilian friend asked me if the Bronx was similar to the peripheries of Brazil. It's nothing like it. The Bronx has structure. The peripheries of Brazil are not places for a citizen to live in a dignified way with open sewage and without basic sanitation. Compared to Brazil, the only thing that can be compared is the distance from these popular neighborhoods to the center of the city.

Who lives in Salvador is as if the Bronx were in Ă guas Claras, or SĂŁo Paulo would be in the East Zone and Porto Alegre in Restinga. The Bronx is a welcoming, multicultural neighborhood and remains the destination of immigrants. Many Latinos and Caribbeans live in this area and what attracts more people to this location are affordable housing coupled with a notable criminality decrease.

Gangs: We need to understand the social and political context of the Bronx region to understand the emergence of various gangs. The neighborhood was degraded by deindustrialization and lack of government investment. As a result, unemployment and violence began to increase. In search of solidarity, security and even fun, the young people set up the gangs. The history of the Bronx gangs served as inspiration for the creation of various novels and films. Gangs show us the disregard of government and the adaptability of society in the face of external circumstances. Through art a transformation is possible. An example of this is DJ Afrika Bambaataa, who turned the Black Spades gang into the first hip hop crew, Universal Zulu Nation.

This peace would have a cultural cascade effect throughout the world. A political activism was installed in many of these gangs, as they were protecting their neighborhood. They have harnessed this energy and made it into something positive in different ways to contribute to a good collective.

Naquele primeiro passeio já me encantei pela região.

Voltei na mesma semana e desta vez atravessei a ponte do Brooklyn a pé. Imponente e carregando os seus mais de 130 anos de história, a ponte do Brooklyn marca a chegada ao distrito. Quando foi inaugurada em 1883, depois de 14 anos de construção, o Brooklyn era a terceira maior cidade dos Estados Unidos (EUA). De terceira maior cidade para terceira maior região, o status mudou, mas ainda é a maior concentração populacional de Nova Iorque com 2,6 milhões de habitantes.

minha primeira visita ao distrito do Brooklyn foi numa noite de segunda-feira daquele especial mês de agosto de 2016. Fui dançar ao som do músico e Dj paulista Eduardo Brechó numa casa de shows chamada Benge que há 14 anos agita as noites do bairro. Brechó, que fazia uma série de apresentações na cidade de Nova Iorque, me levou para um curto passeio aos arredores de Williansburg e me contou que aquele era um dos pedaços mais hipster com boutiques descoladas, grafites tomando conta do visual, com restaurantes e bares badalados.

Pra entender o que é o Brooklyn em tamanho e diversidade cultural preciso explicar que ele não é mais um município, mas sim um Borough, essa palavra não tem uma tradução em português, mas pode se assemelhar ao que chamamos de distrito aqui no Brasil, nem um bairro, nem um município.

Entre os mais de dois milhões de habitantes temos judeus ortodoxos, descendentes de russos, italianos e africanos.

Hoje, um dos locais mais queridinhos da cidade, concentra várias vilas, cada uma com as características culturais dos povos que nela vivem. Willisburg é uma destas áreas, encantadora por sinal, mas eu vim aqui pra ver gente com grande concentração de melanina no corpo, 35% dos moradores do Brooklyn se auto declaram negros ou de origem africana e eles tem um lugar certo no Borough, a área de Flatbush.

Já num outro dia peguei o trem na Times Square, avenida mais famosa de Nova Iorque. O meu destino era o cruzamento da avenida Flatbush com a Church. Eu estava hospedada na casa do meu amigo Toni e ele me disse: “Você quer ver gente preta no Brooklyn? Vá até a Flatbush Avenue”. Segui o seu conselho. Durante a viagem, a cada estação o vagão foi enegrecendo. Enquanto na estação da Times Square a maioria das pessoas no trem eram brancas e falavam variados idiomas. Turistas que se locomoviam pelos pontos da cidade, quanto mais me aproximava do meu destino o vagão ia ficando com mais pessoas negras. Senti-me em casa, com os meus e encantada. Me senti como se estivesse em um filme do Spike Lee. Mais de uma hora andando pelo bairro, não vi nenhum branco. Negros rostos, negros corpos, negras roupas, negra cultura. Estava em um mundo no qual não queria mais sair. Enfim, eu cheguei ao lado negro do Brooklyn. É claro que este lado da cidade não tem o glamour de Manhattan, mas tem a essência da África. Ouvir música africana pelas ruas e sentir a presença dos imigrantes é muito forte nesta região. É muito comum ver mulheres negras de turbantes empurrando carrinhos de bebe pelas ruas, as lojas vendem produtos africanos e estampam com orgulho a bandeira de algum país do continente negro.

A cultura hip hop aqui também é muito forte. A música está no som dos carros, há vestimentas típicas da cultura no movimento hip hop. Existem muitos aspirantes a jogadores de basquete, pois em cada esquina há uma quadra e vários meninos e meninas tentando acertar um arremesso.

Porém, não diferente do que acontece no Harlem, a especulação imobiliária chegou ao lado de cá do Brooklyn e com isso o aumento dos preços dos aluguéis que expulsa os moradores negros da região. Mas também há aqueles moradores que se organizam em grupos para permanecer resistindo e vivendo no distrito.

Esse é o Brooklyn negro que te quero, que vejo nos filmes e tive a oportunidade de vivenciar por alguns dias.

While at the Times Square station most of the people on the train were white and a variety of languages. Tourists who moved around the touristic points of the city, the closer as I got to my destination I start seeing more black people. I felt at home with my people and, of course, delighted. I felt like I was in a Spike Lee movie. More than an hour walking through the neighborhood, I did not see any white. Black faces, black bodies, black clothes, black culture. I was in a world where I did not want to leave. Anyway, I got to the dark side of Brooklyn.

Of course this side of the city does not have the glamor of Manhattan, but it has the essence of Africa. Listening to African music through the streets and feeling the presence of immigrants is very strong in this region. It is very common to see black women in turbans pushing baby carriages through the streets, shops selling African products and proudly show the flag of some country of the black continent.

The hip hop culture here is also very strong. The music is in the sound of cars, there are typical clothing of the culture in the hip hop movement. There are many aspiring basketball players, because at each corner there is a court and several boys and girls trying to hit a pitch.

But as happened in Harlem, real estate speculation has hit Brooklyn's side, and so has rising rents prices driving black residents out of the area. But there are also those residents who organize themselves in groups to remain resisting and living in the district. u tenho frequentado o Harlem desde que cheguei em New York, há um ano e meio. No começo, era apenas meu caminho para escola de inglês, ida e volta pela famosa 125th Street, ou a famosa Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard como eu aprendi com um venderdor ambulante aqui da região. A estação de metrô fica na esquina e uma outra rua igualmente famosa que cruza a 125th street, a Lenox. O mesmo senhor me ensinou que a Lenox também tem outro nome: Malcoln X Boulevard. Ah... Como eu queria ter registrado este encontro. MalcolnX com o Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Pode, para alguns, parecer só nomes, uma tentativa de homenagear gênios que já passaram por ali. Mas na verdade é história de gente preta que faz parte de uma cultura afro americana que está fincada neste bairro.

No início, com meu inglês quase nulo, a falta de confiança não me permitia enxergar as complexidades do Harlem. E esta mesma falta de confiança me fez perder um bom tempo acreditando que eu não deveria frequentar ou andar sozinha por esta área. Eu sempre ouvia que era muito perigoso. Não julgo as pessoas que me passaram esta informação, a maioria brasileiros que vivem nos Estados Unidos há mais de 15 ou 20 anos e moram em áreas afastadas da cidade (Manhattan). Brasileiros que muitas vezes não tiveram vontade ou oportunidade de conhecer a cidade. Essa ideia de que o Harlem é muito perigoso vem da década de 80, início dos anos 90, quando houve uma enorme presença de crack e gangues, não só no Harlem, mas em toda Nova Iorque.

Demorou, mas descobri que o Harlem era muito além da problemática droga e de ruas com nomes e ‘desnomes’. Muito além da visível área de desembarque dos imigrantes, na maioria Senegaleses, que se aglomeram, a cada dia em maior número, oferecendo tranças, roupas com estampas afros e tomando conta do comércio informal. Se espremendo entre as ruas e os stands do Mercado Afro na rua 116. Palco de grandes movimentos culturais e manifestações sociais, o bairro é hoje um dos maiores complexos culturais da América Negra. Um lar para todos que fogem da opressão e buscam oportunidades. Berço de música, literatura, arquitetura, moda, luta e religião.

And this same lack of confidence made me lose a lot of time believing I should not go or walk alone in this area. I always heard it was very dangerous. O Harlem é um centro de referência negra desde 1920. Foi nessa época que líderes e igrejas negras migraram estrategicamente para o bairro e ocuparam a área que se estende entre as ruas 125sth e 145sth. Nos anos 30, muitos negros do Sul dos EUA vieram para Nova Iorque fugindo do forte regime racista de estados como o Mississipi ou a Carolina do Sul. Garvey construiu um complexo de lojas, uma sala de teatro e dança, o Teatro Renaissance, demolido em 2015 sob muita controvérsia.

Mas o que tem acontecido no Harlem, é que assim como eu, muitos estrangeiros descobriram esta área. É impressionante o aumento do número de turistas que passam pelas ruas. Atraídos por abatimentos fiscais, muitas vezes ignoram ou simplesmente não respeitam a presença da população local. Numa tentativa de “desenvolver” a região, grandes empresários tentam construir novas habitações de alto padrão, restaurantes com uma cara “gourmet”, paisagismo e estúdios de yoga. Um grupo de investidores, comprou uma parte do lado Oeste da rua Martin Luther King com a Malcoln X, acredita-se que a retirada da indicativa “Malcon X” da placa, partiu-se daí, por não ser, a história dos negros, tão interessante para o público que frequentará o novo complexo que está sendo construído.

Harlem has been a black reference center since 1920. E há muito mais o que se ver, fazer e preservar nesta comunidade. O Harlem é, naturalmente, conhecido pela sua diversidade cultural. Quem nunca ouviu falar do ilustre Apollo Theater na rua 125, entre Frederic Douglas e a sétima Avenida? A “Amateur Night”, a noite dos amadores promovida pelo Apolo, é possível sentir, ou reviver cenas que só vemos em filmes, onde ganha o músico que recebe o maior número de aplausos. A tradicional culinária afroamericana chamada Soul Food, muito parecida com a comida dos estados do sul dos EUA (New Orleans, Mississippi etc.), com frango frito, batata doce e feijão, é facilmente encontrada no destino favorito dos turistas, o tradicional Sylvia’s restaurante. Ouvir a uma jazz session de segunda a segunda não é nada difícil. Meu lugar favorito para isso e, também, para network, é o Red Rooster. Aqui eu me encontro, me identifico no rosto de cada pessoa negra que circula por essas áreas. O Harlem, pra mim, é a loja da “Nike” que vende os “Air Jordan” mais incríveis de Nova Iorque. O museu que valoriza artistas negros e grita pros turistas a beleza da nossa cor. É a cara dos imigrantes africanos tocando tambor no fim de tarde. A Abyssinian Baptist Church, leva muito a sério sua missão, qual seja, “(...) ganhar mais almas para Cristo através da evangelização pastoral, da educação cristã; da prestação de serviços sociais e promoção do desenvolvimento da comunidade.” para todos que procuram conforto espiritual em Cristo. Do pequeno número inicial de membros, hoje a Abyssinian figura como uma das mais influentes entre os afroamericanos e uma das maiores igrejas protestantes do mundo.

Tem estreita cooperação com a Libéria, onde se repatriaram escravizados emancipados em 1863, mantendo no país africano uma escola industrial para qualificação da mão de obra. Desde sua fundação, criou um orfanato para as crianças afroamericanas; um asilo para idosos; uma assistência funerária; uma cozinha industrial e restaurante comunitário que atendeu aos necessitados, durante a “Grande Recessão”.

A melhor prática da Abyssian Baptist Church é conduzir condignamente seu rebanho à prosperidade prometida ainda no plano terreno, bem ao espírito político da economia capitalista, sempre pródiga em arrecadar fundos, dentro da comunidade religiosa e afora dela, proporcionando aporte para sua vasta obra social.

Uma campanha do dízimo possibilitou a construção de sua Igreja, cuja edificação é composta além da magnífica nave, um salão para os ensaios do Coral, o refeitório e a cozinha, escritórios da administração, salas de reuniões, e, a sala da escola de catequese.

Também inclui o suporte e a educação financeira de seus membros, e mantem uma instituição bancária/cooperativa. Tudo com o propósito comprovado de beneficiar a sua comunidade cristã e proporcionar o cumprimento do Evangelho, naquilo que se lê em João 10:10, como palavra de Jesus Cristo:

Atualmente sob o comando do Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III, a Abyssinian tem contribuído para o desenvolvimento da comunidade do Harlem, alargando a consciência cultural de pertencimento a partir de ações e de suas mensagens positivas dentro de seu domínio ecumênico. O Dr. Butts insurgiu contra letras e imagens negativas na indústria do entretenimento, chamando a atenção para a repercussão de tais mensagens, de apologia à violência e ao sexismo, na formação da juventude afroamericana. O investimento em educação dos jovens resultou na Marshall Academia Thurgood para Aprendizagem e Mudança Social, em 1993, sendo esta a primeira nova escola construída em Nova York em mais de 50 anos.

Por ocasião do bicentenário da Abyssinian Church, fizeram uma peregrinação à Etiópia e desde então trabalham conjuntamente com agricultores etíopes em cooperação para a produção de café e sua distribuição no mercado norte-americano.

Estivemos na Igreja Batista Abissínia, no Harlem, em setembro último. Foi uma experiência agradável, assistimos ao culto ministrado pelo Reverendo Butts, ouvimos o Coral e fiquei particularmente reflexiva a respeito da preleção do Ministro que se limitou – embora enfaticamente – ao Capítulo 1 do Livro Gênesis:“No princípio criou Deus os céus e a terra.”. A

partir de então o reverendo passou a fazer críticas às religiões neopentecostais que espalham pelo mundo afora, e particularmente conhecido por nós brasileiros;, e que Jesus, “o filho de Deus feito Homem” tem mais poder que o próprio Pai. Observando as Leis de Deus, atribuo o fato de usar preferencialmente o nome de Jesus e não o de Deus, por temerem, os neopentecostais, as consequências de não obediência ao Terceiro Mandamento: “Não tomarás o nome do Senhor teu Deus em vão: porque o Senhor não terá por inocente o que tomar o seu nome em vão.” Êxodo, 20:7 No decorrer da cerimônia o Rev. Butts nada disse sobre o racismo que representa esta fé cega na palavra de um bispo como o Macedo da Igreja Universal.

Os fieis, se não eram todos ricos, vestiam-se de tal maneira que davam a impressão de estarem prontos para sê-lo.

O Coral da Igreja Batista Abissínia adquiriu fama internacional por suas performances de clássicas canções sacras; enquanto a fé religiosa vinha decrescendo contrariamente ao desenvolvimento material das sociedades, a Abyssinian se firmou como um dos maiores templos de fé protestante. Certamente o efeito agregador e reconfortante da Igreja e seu Coral gerou, nas igrejas católicas, investimentos tais a Missa Luba, dos anos 1950, que somava às canções sacras em latim, canções tradicionais do então Congo, cantadas por um coro de crianças e adolescentes em sua língua africana. Também aconteceu no Brasil, a Missa dos Quilombos, celebrada uma única vez no Recife, em 1981, com músicas de Milton Nascimento.

Ambas as experiências católicas de “boa vontade” para com os africanos e seus descendentes não avançaram do palco à liturgia diária. A forma particular que os africanos na Diáspora exercem a sua religiosidade, como o Candomblé na Bahia e a Umbanda no Rio de Janeiro, nos últimos anos, resultaram no que se chama “intolerância religiosa” com drásticas consequências para os que têm fé nos Orixás. Fé que herdada dos tempos da escravidão, buscava a liberdade e a paz de espírito, atualmente representa uma resistência à aculturação, uma frente de combate ao racismo que pontua as relações sociais brasileiras.

Em última instância, o abandono da justificativa do sincretismo pelo “povo de santo”, e a crescente valorização de sua identidade africana ancestral, é a prova irrefutável da insubmissão aos cânones da religião eurocêntrica como verdade absoluta para a

Investment in youth education resulted in the Marshall Thurgood Academy for Learning and Social Change in 1993, this being the first new school built in New York in more than 50 years. On the occasion of the bicentenary of the Abyssinian Church, they made a pilgrimage to Ethiopia and since then have worked together with Ethiopian farmers in cooperation for the production of coffee and its distribution in the North American market.

We were at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem last September. O

bviamente para alguém que nunca morou fora de Salvador, mudar para New York seria um desafio.

Acredito que nem nas minhas fantasias mais mirabolantes eu me veria morando aqui, advogando, aconselhando clientes multimilionários sobre tributação – uma área elitista e predominantemente branca.

Não tenho aqui a audácia de fingir que os resultados são fruto da minha dedicação, exclusicamente. Seria um insulto à minha família, mais especialmente a meus pais, ignorar os sacrifícios que eles se submeteram para que isso acontecesse. Ao contrário do que estamos acostumados a ver no Brasil, mais especialmente na minha cidade natal – Salvador, não é possivel se comprar uma carreira. Em Salvador, um nome conhecido, alguns poucos contatos e um diploma caro podem lhe render uma carreira decente, às vezes até invejável.

bviously for someone who has never lived outside of Salvador, moving to New York would be a challenge. I do not believe that even in my fanciest fantasies I would find myself living here, advocating, advising multimillion-dollar clients on taxation - an elitist and predominantly white area.

I do not have the audacity to pretend that the results are the result of my dedication, exclusively. It would be an insult to my family, especially my parents, to ignore the sacrifices they underwent for this to happen. Contrary to what we are used to see in Brazil, more especially in my hometown - Salvador, it's not possible to buy a career. In Salvador, a well-known name, a few contacts and an expensive diploma can earn you a decent career, sometimes even enviable.

Lembro que na aula de introdução, recebemos um pacote com as asscociaçōes estudantis em andamento, lista de integrantes e suas funçōes, contatos, descrição de atividades, etc. De imediato, meus olhos pousaram em duas associaçōes – Propriedade Intelectual (especialização que idealizei) e a BLSA – “Associação de alunos negros da faculdade de direito”.* Definitivamente, o que fez a diferença nessa trajetória foi a BLSA. As associaçōes de alunos nas faculdades nos Estados Unidos são a porta de entrada para a vida profissional, e foi lá que eu fiz os meus melhores contatos. As reuniōes abertas ao público acontecem uma vez por mês – e são abertas para quem quiser participar. A BLSA coleciona titulos e honrarias acadêmicas, e é famosa pela qualidade dos eventos que promove. Dentre outras atividades, os alunos podem contar com a assistência na elaboração e revisão de currículo e carta de intenção (acredite em mim, essa é definivamente a parte mais difícil da busca pelo emprego), simulação de entrevista, networking, e coaching para o bar exam . O presidente da BLSA do ano anterior me assistiu durante a minha preparação, fornecendo material, corrigindo minhas redaçōes e respondendo às minhas dúvidas. Passei de segunda!

Com a BLSA, tive a chance de conhecer os profissionais mais bem sucedidos, numa área em que nunca tinha visto um advogado negro antes. E o melhor, pude me ver neles. O mais chocante (positivamente, é claro) foi ver como a associação é respeitada por uma quantidade massiva de alunos, inclusive os não negros. Vide todos os eventos de apoio ao movimento Black Lives Matter, com adesão recorde entre alunos e professores.

Vou compartilhar uma das minhas memórias favoritas desse período.

Todo o ano a faculdade promove uma cerimônia de recepção dos alunos novos. Dentre representantes da reitoria, diretoria e corpo docente, um aluno também é convidado para falar em nome do corpo discente. A aluna escolhida foi Garynn Noel, de pais haitianos, mas nascida e criada no Brooklyn. Durante todo o seu discurso, não tirei os olhos do público. Era lindo ver como aqueles alunos bebiam as suas palavras. Garynn falou da responsabilidade (e do medo) de ser advogada negra num país genocida contra a nossa população. Falou dos caminhos, da dedicação exclusiva, competitividade e busca pela excelência. Esse discurso soou direcionado a mim. Ficamos amigas. Recentemente contei a ela o quaão inspiradora a presença dela foi em minha trajetória.

Finalizo dizendo que é muito prestigioso fazer parte dessa comunidade.

BLSA me deu um dos maiores presentes, conhecer profissionais de extreme sucesso em áreas ditas de elite, nos quais eu me identifiquei. BLSA me deu representatividade.

A concorrência é desumana, e a própria faculdade reconhece a dificuldade de se conseguir um emprego de qualidade. E cair de paraquedas nessa cidade, sendo uma coleção de “minorias” – mulher; negra; imigrante; latina; só faria o processo ainda mais difícil.

Here, as clichĂŠ as this phrase may seem, is a "jungle of stone." Competition is inhuman, and the faculty itself recognizes the difficulty of obtaining quality employment. And to fall from parachutes in this city, being a collection of "minorities" - woman; black; immigrant; latina; would only make the process even more difficult.

I remember that in the introduction class, we received a package with ongoing student assignments, list of members and their functions, contacts, description of activities, etc. Immediately, my eyes rested on two associations - Intellectual Property (specialization that I idealized) and the BLSA - "Association of Black Students from Law School." * Definitely, what made the difference in this trajectory was BLSA. The associations of students in colleges in the United States are the gateway to professional life, and it was there that I made my best contacts. Meetings open to the public are held once a month - and are open to anyone who wants to participate. BLSA collects academic degrees and honors, and it's famous for the quality of the events it promotes. Among other activities, students can count on assistance in developing and reviewing curriculum and letter of intent (believe me, this is definitely the hardest part of the job search), interview simulation, networking, and coaching for the bar exam. The president of BLSA of the previous year assisted me during my preparation, providing material, correcting my submissions and responding to my doubts. I entered at the second attempt!

With BLSA, I had the chance to meet the most successful professionals in an area where I had never seen a black lawyer before. And the best, I could see myself in them. The most shocking (positively, of course) was to see how the association is respected by a massive number of students, including non-blacks. I saw all the events in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, with record membership among students and teachers.

I'll share one of my favorite memories from this period. All year long the university promotes a reception ceremony for the new students.

Among representatives of the rectory, board and faculty, a student is also invited to speak on behalf of the student body. The student chosen was Garynn Noel, she has Haitian parents, but born and raised in Brooklyn. Throughout her speech, I did not take my eyes off the audience. It was lovely to watch those students drink her words.

Garynn spoke of the responsibility (and fear) of being a black lawyer in a genocidal country against our people. She spoke about the paths, the exclusive dedication, competitiveness and the search for excellence. This speech sounded directed to me. We became friends. I recently told her how inspiring her presence was in my trajectory.

I finish saying that it is very prestigious to be part of this community.

BLSA gave me one of the greatest gifts, meeting professionals of extreme success in so-called elite areas, in which I identified myself. BLSA gave me representativeness.

DJ Loira Limbal, dominicana, mas residente em Nova Iorque desde os três anos de idade, divide a sua vida adulta em duas áreas: cinema e música. Além de ser DJ também trabalha com filmes e documentários tudo dentro de uma base de ativismo. “Na verdade foi através do ativismo que eu consegui entrar nessas áreas. Não tinha noção que poderia viver por meio da arte. Hoje eu sou diretora, produtora e dirijo um programa que ajuda pessoas de cor. Essas comunidades são pouco representadas na mídia e encontram dificuldades para fazer os seus primeiros filmes, do ponto de vista deles, imigrantes, latinos, mulçumanos”, esse é um pouco do trabalho que exerce na área do audiovisual.

Loira Limbal, a Dominican who has lived in New York since she was three years old, divides her adult life into two areas: cinema and music. Besides being a DJ, she also works with films and documentaries, booth with an activist approach. “Actually, it was through activism that I got into these areas. I had no idea that I could live funded by art. Today I am a director, producer and director of a program that helps people of color. These communities are underrepresented and find difficulties to make their first films, from their point of view, immigrants, Latinos, Muslims” - that`s a bit of her audiovisual work.

No mundo DJ: “Eu toco música negra de qualquer canto do mundo. Se eu consigo fazer o povo dançar.

Se eu posso imaginar uma forma de conectar a música de Cabo Verde com Jamaica eu vou tentar fazer isso na pista de dança. Eu vejo isso como uma forma de nutrir nossas comunidades. Eu vejo como uma limpeza espiritual. O mundo é muito duro e difícil e esses espaços acabam sendo lugares para despejar um pouco, se aliviar para poder continuar na batalha do dia a dia”, afirma DJ Loira.

As a DJ: "I play black music from any corner of the world. If I can make people dance. If I can imagine a way to connect the music of Cape Verde with Jamaica I'll try to do it on the dance floor. I see this as a way to feed our communities. I see it as a spiritual cleansing. The world is very hard and these spaces becomes a place to relieve themselves so they can continue in the daily battles”, she says.

A DJ Loira entrou no ramo musical há 15 anos quando fazia parte de um coletivo de mulheres negras e latinas no Brooklyn no qual o trabalho era de educação política e conscientização das meninas dessa comunidade. Para manter o coletivo realizam diversos eventos e festas, e começaram a perceber que na hora de chamar DJ para tocar só tinham homens na lista foi quando o coletivo resolver investir e comprar equipamentos de som para que três meninas do grupo pudessem aprender a arte de tocar. DJ Loira foi à única que seguiu nessa carreira.

DJ Loira joined the music business 15 years ago when she was part of a group of Black and Latino women in Brooklyn. Their job was to educate the community girls in political affaires. In order to keep the group, they hold events and parties, when they realize that there was only men playing as DJ. The collective decided to invest and buy equipment and three girls in the group could learn the art of playing. DJ Loira is the only one who remains in the career.

No período da faculdade realizou um intercâmbio de um ano e meio no Brasil, passou pelas cidades do Rio de Janeiro, Salvador e São Paulo, onde permaneceu mais tempo. Na ocasião casou com LF membro do DMN, grupo de rap de São Paulo. Quando retornaram para Nova Iorque, DJ Loira começou acompanhar e tocar com o então esposo em suas apresentações. Logo em seguida foi convidada para tocar em festas e em grandes eventos, como tocar no Central Park.

Sempre gostou muito de música, mas com o nascimento do seu primeiro filho se afastou um pouco desse mundo para se dedicar ao ser mãe. Só voltou a tocar com o nascimento da sua segunda filha. “Já estava passando pelo processo de separação e ficou muito nítido tendo uma menina que seria muito importante mostrar para ela que a nossa felicidade é algo de nossa responsabilidade. É a gente que constrói e não tem que ir buscar felicidade nos outros ou esperar que alguém te faça feliz. Você mesmo tem que se fazer feliz. Acho que essa é uma lição importante tanto pra homem como para mulher”.

Atualmente toca numa festa chamada AfriKando que acontece em um bar no Harlem numa região não muito badalada. A missão da DJ é fazer uma conexão musical da diáspora africana. Nessa festa toca muitas músicas latinas, do caribe, do continente africano e algumas brasileiras. Moradora do Bronx, local onde nasceu à cultura hip hop, confessa que toca rap em outras ocasiões, pois nessa festa é momento de experimentar outros ritmos e o público está ali para sentir e se envolver com essas outras culturas.

Paixão pelo Bronx: “Acho que é o último canto de Nova Iorque que é verdadeiro. É o lugar onde nasceu o hip hop.

Não é atoa que nasceu ali, nasceu por conta da combinação da comunidade que tinha. Ali quem criou o hip hop foram negros americanos, negros caribenhos e pessoas latinas que criaram essa cultura mundial. Isso é um ponto de orgulho. O Bronx hoje está começando há mudar um pouco, mas muito mais devagar que em outros pontos da cidade. Ali é o local aonde realmente pode encontrar novaiorquinos. Por exemplo, no Brooklyn você fala com três pessoas e duas são de fora, da Califórnia ou de Atlanta, e vieram morar aqui porque são poetas, são artistas prestes a se lançar para mundo, mas não são aquelas pessoas criadas no bairro. Porém, isso é processo natural que faz parte de uma cidade grande. Não estou falando contra, mas eu valorizo aquele novaiorquino que viveu naquela época no seu bairro, onde estava tudo queimado, que o crack dominava e ele permaneceu na sua comunidade e hoje merece usufruir das melhorias existentes nos bairros. Então, pra mim o Bronx é tudo isso. É questão de orgulho mesmo. Brigo pelo Bronx. Aqui tem uma história de resistência que precisa ser respeitada”, finaliza.

During the university, she spent a year and a half in Brazil, through Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo. On that time, she married LF, member of the DMN, a rap group of São Paulo. Back to New York, DJ Loira played with him and soon she was invited to play at big events, like the Central Park.

When her first son was born, she stopped working to devote her time to being a mother. She only played again after the birth of her second daughter. "I was already going through the process of separation and was very clear having a girl who would be very important to show her that our happiness is something of our own responsibility. We build our happiness and we shall not get or look for it in other people, or even expect someone to make us happy. I think this is an important lesson for men and women”.

Nowadays she plays at a party called AfriKando, in a not quite popular area of Harlem. The DJ's mission is to make a musical connection to the African diaspora. In this party , she plays many Latin songs, the Caribbean, the African continent and also some Brazilian music. Living in the Bronx, where hip hop culture was born, she confesses that she plays rap on other occasions, because at this party it is time to try other rhythms.

The audience is there to feel and get involved with these other cultures.

Passion for the Bronx: "I think it's the last genuine place of New York. It's where hip hop was born. And also because of the mixed community. Those who created hip hop were black Americans, Latinos and Caribbean, a world culture. This is a reason for pride. The Bronx is starting to change, but much slower than other parts of the city. Here you can really find New Yorkers. For example, in Brooklyn, every three people you speak to, two are from outside, form California or Atlanta.

They live here because they are poets, artists about to launch their works to the world. But they were not raised in the neighborhood. This is a natural process in a big city. I'm not against it, but I value the New Yorker who lived there at that time when everything was burning, when the crack dominated the streets. Still, he remained in the community and today he deserves to enjoy the urban improvements. I fight for the Bronx. Here there is a story of resistance that needs to be respected”, she says.

Baiano Davi Viera leva suas origens para o outro lado da América C

om carisma contagiante e sorriso largo no rosto, a entrevista com o cantor baiano e percussionista Davi Vieira foi regada de muita risada no Bryant Park, localizado aos fundos da Biblioteca Pública de Nova Iorque, em Manhattan. Radicado há 26 anos na cidade, Davi Vieira mora fora do Brasil desde os 18 anos. Porém, primeiro morou na Europa por três anos quando aceitou um convite para fazer apresentações da cultura afro brasileira pelo continente, pois além de músico também é dançarino e capoeirista.

ith an contagious charisma and a big smile on his face, the interview with the Bahia singer and percussionist Davi Vieira was stuffed with much laughter at Bryant Park, at the back of the New York Public Library in Manhattan. Living in the city for 26 years, Davi left Brazil since he was 18 years old. He first lived in Europe for three years, when he accepted an invitation to present Afro-Brazilian culture on the continent, as well as being a musician, dancer and capoeirista.

“Eu vim morar em Nova Iorque em 1990. Sempre tive vontade de vir para os Estados Unidos, mas apareceu primeiro a oportunidade de ir para Europa.

Porém tinha os pensamentos aqui”, lembra o cantor.

Seu sonho era ir para Los Angeles. Chegou à cidade, na qual permaneceu por três meses, com 800 dólares no bolso e sem falar inglês. Revela que no início tudo era novidade, mas ao mesmo tempo difícil. Já em Nova Iorque participou de diversas bandas. Em 1994 foi escolhido para fazer parte do primeiro elenco do Stomp (Off Broadway Show) onde atuou por dez anos. No ano seguinte, junto com Marivaldo dos Santos, gravou o album de rap MD MC’s, pela EMI. “Em 1995 voltei a morar no Brasil, mas não vingou trabalho. Parecia que o pessoal não entendia o que estávamos propondo. Acredito que estávamos muito além daquele tempo. Fiquei um ano e voltei para cá”.

Mas lembrando que eu estou aqui representando o Brasil sempre como o meu trabalho. Sou um representante forte, da Bahia principalmente, local que eu amo muito. Dentro de mim é algo que sai natural, minhas composições e quem escuta sente que tem algo da Bahia e o groove sempre é natural. A Bahia está dentro de mim e não sai e nem quero que saia.

A cultura baiana é riquíssima”, fala com um encantamento a sua terra e revela que pretende vir ao Brasil para gravar um clipe em Salvador.

Tem essa liberdade de expressão e ninguém ta nem aí. Esse é o bom de Nova Iorque e eu por ser artista e sempre querer ter essa liberdade, Nova Iorque é a cidade perfeita para isso. Adoro”, afirma.

“I love this mix of culture in New York. This opportunity to see and participate in different things is incredible. There’s practically everything here, restaurants and people from all over the world. You have this freedom of expression - and no one cares. This is the good thing about New York. Being an artist, looking for that freedom… New York is the perfect city”, he says.

Davi Vieira inova ao mesclar diferentes ritmos em suas apresentações e o resultado é surpreendente.

Isso tudo é fruto de uma fusão entre as culturas, principalmente, norte americana e brasileira. A influência dos elementos afro brasileiros estão imprimidos em seu estilo musical. Traz para o palco a sua percepção do mundo. Atualmente o show do músico pode ser conferido e apreciado no clube Bonafide, em Manhattan, Nova Iorque.

Davi Vieira innovates by mixing different rhythms into his performances. The result is surprising, due to a fusion between cultures, mainly North American and Brazilian. The influence of the Afro-Brazilian elements is present on his musical style. He brings to the stage his perception of the world. Currently the musician’s show can be checked and enjoyed at the Bonafide Club in Manhattan, New York.

Documentary: The feature film “Meeting David Wilson” became a milestone in the civil rights struggle, as it sparked a national debate about race relations in America. David Wilson wrote and shared the direction of the documentary with Dan Woolsey.

The film reconstructs the origins of Wilson’s enslaved family. The director found and became friend of a descendant of the family that enslaved his ancestral.

ma jovem jornalista brasileira com o anseio de conhecer outras culturas, aprender outro idioma, vi¬venciar novas experiências na sua área profissional.

Poderíamos aqui citar diversos nomes de pessoas com esse mesmo sonho, o tão famoso “sonho ame¬ricano”, porém a vida da mineira Elis Clementino, nesse um ano e meio morando em Nova Iorque não tem sido tão fácil assim. Por hora, o sonho mais parece um pesadelo, aquele que é difícil de acordar.

We could mention several names of people with this same dream, the famous "American dream", but the life of Elis Clementino, Brazilian from Minas Gerais, in this one and a half year living in New York has not been so easy. “Há tantos sentimentos e pensamentos dentro de mim. Parece que meu coração está espremido e minha mente expandida. Parece que quanto mais eu faço, mais eu tenho que fazer. Às vezes eu realmente penso em desistir. Outras vezes eu só quero conquistar o mundo. Ser uma menina. Uma mulher negra me ensinou como ser forte. Ser uma sonhadora me mostrou como viver com meus dois pés completamente no chão e como trabalhar duro para conseguir o que eu quero. Eu sei quem eu costumava ser, e é por isso que eu não quero ser a mesma. Eu sei de onde eu vim, mas também sei onde posso chegar. E eu estou chegando lá! A vida é difícil, mas ainda prefiro estar viva.

O amor é complicado, até que você encontre (ou não) aquele Ser... e eu ainda estou procurando por ele. Acima de tudo eu sou abençoada, e ninguém pode mudar isso!”, afirma Elis em um post publicado em sua rede social no mês de dezembro.

Essa entrevista foi realizada em setembro de 2016, num café no Harlem, em Nova Iorque. Ao sentarmos ali, uma de fronte para outra, para mais um bate papo, aquela jovem menina se transformava diante de nossos olhos em uma guerreira que enfrentou e ainda enfrenta diversos obstáculos para ir em busca de seus sonhos, pois como ela mesma diz: “Queda aqui você leva horrores e é uma queda fora de casa. No Brasil tem os pais e amigos que nos acolhem, nos abraçam.

Aqui você está sozinha. Você está em Nova Iorque, milhões de pessoas passam por você e não dão nem bom dia, porque ninguém tem tempo nessa cidade. É preciso fazer campanha em praça pública de abraço grátis. Se você cair aqui não pode ficar muito tempo no chão.

Tem que levantar sozinha e eu acho que essa é a parte mais tensa de Nova Iorque”.

A jornalista, que saiu de Poços de Caldas, em Minas Gerais, para fazer graduação em uma cidade grande como São Paulo, onde viveu por 10 anos, sentiu que precisava ter o rumo de sua vida novamente.

Quando, em maio de 2015, fez suas malas para os Estados Unidos (EUA). “Ninguém me disse que seria fácil, mas eu não imaginava que seria tão difícil assim”, revela.

No início do ano de 2015 teve depressão profunda. Enfrentava problemas no trabalho por preconceito racial e questões amorosas até chegar ao ponto de ter crise de pânico sem conseguir sair do quarto.

“Nunca vou esquecer o que meu pai me disse: ‘Antes de você morrer, você vai me matar se não reagir’. Naquele dia aceitei que precisava de ajuda e minha mãe me levou em uma psiquiatra. Ela me perguntou se eu tinha um sonho. Falei que era ir morar nos EUA. Então mandou realizar esse sonho, pois o meu problema era que eu não sonhava mais”.

Juntou toda economia que tinha conversou com tios que moravam nos EUA para lhe hospedar. Por seis meses tinha uma moradia e a meta era aprender a falar em inglês. Fez curso e com cinco meses e meio vivendo na cidade mudou para casa de uma família para trabalhar no local. Tinha que cuidar dos três filhos, limpar a casa e em troca tinha um quarto e recebia por semana. “Não acreditava que estava passando por tudo isso. Sou uma pessoa com curso superior, mas aqui não consigo trabalhar na minha área, seja porque não é reconhecido ou porque não tenho o visto correspondente. Cada hora é uma coisa. Vim para cá com visto de turista e apliquei para o visto de estudante. Tudo aqui é muito caro, mas eu investi nisso. Tinha dias que tinha que ficar dentro do quarto por horas, porque a minha patroa estava recebendo visitas e eu não podia passar pela casa. Em dia de folga ela me ligava toda hora tentando controlar a minha vida coisa que nem a minha mãe fazia. Eu sai desse emprego em agosto desse ano, quando minha vida mudou. Meu visto de estudante chegou e ela surtou. Me fez uma proposta para receber 200 dólares por semana, eu recebi bem menos, ou continuava do jeito que estava e desistia do visto. Fui obrigada a falar que vim para Nova Iorque para estudar e não para juntar dinheiro. Ela me ameaçou e eu tive que sair da casa no mesmo dia sem ter para onde ir”, relembra do episódio.

So I made this dream come true, after I realize that my problem was I didn't have a dream anymore. " When, in May of 2015, she packed her bags and went to the United States. "No one told me it would be easy, but I didn't imagine it would be that difficult," 'she says.

She gathered all the savings she had, asked her uncle, who was living in the United States, to host her. For six months she had a home and the goal was to learn English. She took english course and after five and a half months living in the city she moved to a adopt family’s house to work in there. She had to take care of three children, clean the house, and in return she had a bedroom and received per week. "I did not believe I was going through all this. I have a degree, but here I can't work in my area, either because the course is not recognized or because I do not have the corresponding visa. I came here with a tourist visa and applied for the student visa. Everything here is very expensive, but I invested in it. There were days when I had to stay in the room for hours, because my boss was receiving visitors and I could not go through the house. On my days off she used to call me all the time trying to control my life, something that neither my mother did.

I quit this job in August of that same year, when my life changed. My student visa arrived and she freaked out. She made me a proposal to receive $ 200,00 a week, if things continued as it was, and would have to give up on my visa. I was forced to say that I came to New York to study and not to raise money. She threatened me and I had to leave the house the same day with nowhere to go, "recalls the episode.

Elis conta que passou o dia inteiro procurando um local para morar. Em Nova Iorque é comum alugar o porão das casas. Ela achou um com preço acessível, porém afastado da região de Manhattan. Não voltou para casa dos tios, pois queria um local para ficar sozinha, chorar, sentia vergonha de estar naquela situação, estava muito machucada. Porém revela que sempre teve o apoio dos tios, até na hora de limpar a nova residência para retirar dos antigos morados, milhares de aranhas, e até conseguir móveis para casa.

Hoje, aos 29 anos, aquela jovem que trocou a vida confortável que tinha em Poços de Caldas, para morar em algumas periferias de São Paulo para cursar um ensino superior, e após essa trajetória de assessora de imprensa em alguns órgãos governamentais, mudou para Nova Iorque em busca da felicidade, se revela diante de nossos olhos em uma mulher guerreira. “Sei que vou chorar muitas vezes ainda, mas é a vida. Eu tinha uma meta que era aprender inglês. Cumpri o objetivo. A minha segunda meta é fazer o mestrado e já estou cursando algumas disciplinas. Se eu não conseguir, eu volto para o Brasil sabendo que já deu certo”.

Para não se afastar tanto da sua profissão realizar alguns freelas e está com um projeto de criar um blog chamado “As coisas que Nova Iorque me conta”, não será sobre dicas da cidade e sim sobre as suas experiências vividas nesse um ano meio. Nessa edição é possível conferir um artigo de Elis Clementino no “Olhar Estrangeiro” no qual ela nos leva para conhecer um pouco da história do Harlem negro.

As influências lá no meu bairro era o cara ali na esquina com revolver na mão. Como eu gostava muito de revistas em quadrinhos eu aprendi a desenhar e escolhi ser artista”. Esse relato inicial é do artista plástico, Jackson Almeida, que atualmente vive em New Jersey.

Tal escolha mudou a sua vida, lhe proporcionou outras experiências, intercâmbios e constituir uma família em solo norte americano. Atualmente é casado e pai de dois filhos. “Viver da arte é ralar muito. Matar 20 leões por dia para poder sobreviver, porque se não tiver contato para poder estar no mundo da arte, nas galerias é mais difícil.

Estou nessa batalha já há nove anos. Na luta. Vivo e não vivo da arte ao mesmo tempo. A grana que faço da arte não dá pra manter tudo. Faço outros bicos, sou carpinteiro, pinto, executo outros trabalhos em paralelo a arte”.

Desde pequeno entrou nesse mundo de artes plásticas.

A partir das revistas em quadrinhos começou a desenhar estampas para camisas. Por muitos anos vendia as camisas na famosa escadaria do Gêronimo, na terça da Bênção, que ocorria em Salvador, Bahia/Brasil. Ao se mudar, inicialmente para Nova Iorque, em 2008, conseguiu licença de vendedor de rua. Ficou certa de três a quatro anos vendendo camisas e produzindo arte na rua, mas o inverno em Nova Iorque é muito rigoroso e é impossível nessa estação continuar nessa profissão de vendedor de rua.

Essa realidade o fez deixar de lado um pouco as artes plásticas e mudar para construção civil por questões financeiras. Porém faz oito meses que voltou a se dedicar somente a pintura. Financeiramente não ganha muito, mas faz o que realmente gosta. “Sinto-me feliz fazendo arte, traduzindo ideias e pensamentos. O país aqui me deu muitas oportunidades de crescer como pessoa e como artista. Aqui do outro lado da ponte parece que as coisas fluem. As oportunidades existem, mas é preciso saber garimpar.

No Brasil talvez tenha, mas é escasso, principalmente para gente de pele escura. Aqui já é mais aberto. Você pode ser quem quiser. Aqui eu me sinto livre”, conclui Jackson Almeida.

Museu de História e Cultura AfroAmericana é aberto em Washington O

projeto Identidades Transatlânticas foi idealizado para ser todo desenvolvido em Nova Iorque, porém na abertura do Museu de História e Cultura Afro Americana (NMAAHC), no dia 24 de setembro de 2016, não poderíamos perder a oportunidade de ir para a capital dos Estados Unidos (EUA), Washington D.C., para vivenciar esse momento histórico.

Construído no National Mall, área que abriga vários museus, o NMAAHC possuí mais de 20 mil metros quadros e é a único dedicado exclusivamente à cultura afro americana. A construção durou quatro anos e foi concebida pelo arquiteto de Gana, David Adjaye.

A parte exterior do prédio, um painel de bronze em três camadas, é uma homenagem ao trabalho em ferro forjado feito por pessoas escravizadas no sul dos EUA. O prédio também foi inspirado nas coroas usadas na África Ocidental. Essa fachada pode ser transformada em tela de cinema quando necessário.

Museum of African American History and Culture Opens in Washington

he Transatlantic Identities project was designed to be fully developed in New York, but at the opening of the Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), on September, we could not miss the opportunity to experience that historic moment at the capital of United States (USA), Washington DC. Built on the National Mall, which houses several museums, the NMAAHC has more than 20,000 square meters and is the only one dedicated exclusively to African-American culture. Designed by Ghana’s architect, David Adjaye, the construction took four years. The exterior, a three-pane brass panel, is a tribute to the wrought iron work done by inslaved people in the southern United States. The building was also inspired by the wreaths used in West Africa. This walls can be turned into a cinema screen.

O museu conta com 11 exibições que vão traçar a história da população negra desde a época da escravidão, passando pela segregação racial, a luta pelos direitos civis, as grandes realizações nas artes, no cinema, na televisão, nos esportes, além de apresentar um pouco da cultura de outros países, e o Brasil tem um espaço garantido. Com oito andares, sendo três subterrâneos, a visita só pode ser feita com hora marcada. A visitação é gratuita e o museu é totalmente acessível para pessoas cadeirantes ou com limitação na locomoção. É um passeio histórico incrível e que precisa ser visitado por todas as pessoas.

A vida de um comediante haitiano em Nova Iorque

vida é complicada, mas viver da comédia a torna mais agradável. O haitiano Tanael Joachim fez essa escolha há exatos quatro anos e não se arrepende.

Stand up comedy, termo que designa um espetáculo de humor executado por um comediante, também é o termo que designa a sua atual carreira. Segundo Tanael Joachim, morador do Brooklyn, fazer stand up é a sua paixão.

O comediante, que nasceu e cresceu no Haiti, mudou se para Nova Iorque em 2008. Comenta que trabalhar com comédia é uma experiência única, especialmente por ter nascido em um país bem diferente e com outro idioma. O seu estilo de humor é descontraído e suave.

Em seus shows ele aborda questões do dia a dia, mas também brinca sobre temas relacionados à raça e o contraste entre a vida no Haiti e na América do norte.

The comedian, who was born and raised in Haiti, moved to New York in 2008. He says working with comedy is an unique experience, especially because he was born in a very different country and with another language. His mood style is relaxed and smooth. In the shows, he tackles day-to-day issues, but also touches on themes related to race and the life contrast between Haiti and North America.

“Nas minhas apresentações tento ‘ler’ os Estados Unidos a partir de um ponto de vista haitiano e conto o cotidiano em maneira de crônicas. Tento estabelecer uma conexão com pessoas que não conheço. Não sinto nenhuma barreira entre o público norte americano e eu. O riso é isso, conseguir fazer esse tipo de ligação, essa conexão”, afirma. Porém é preciso ter coragem para ir ao palco e se apresentar para uma plateia até então desconhecida.

Após esse episódio, Tanael Joachim teve outra posição diante do mundo. Ao mesmo tempo que essa tragédia o destruiu e abriu seus olhos para a precariedade da vida, permitiu ver a diferença entre o que considerava ser importante e que realmente é importante para ele hoje.

Esse foi o seu momento de transição ao perceber que mesmo sem um diploma universitário poderia seguir o seu sonho e fazer algo que lhe realizasse profissionalmente. No entanto, Tanael Joachim iniciou, nos Estados Unidos, um curso de graduação em administração, mas não concluiu, pois foi em busca da sua felicidade.

Comenta que esse tipo de comédia não existe no Haiti.

O desafio dessa carreira só aumentava o seu interesse pela profissão. No início é como se estivesse em fase de treinamento e a remuneração é menor. Hoje em dia se apresenta em diversas casas noturnas, além de participar de festivais. Espera poder exercer esse ofício por mais alguns longos anos.
