Pre-Arrival Final Reminders

Well it’s finally here. Where did the summer go?! We’re less than one week away from OP arrivals, and in another two weeks, we’ll be welcoming our FLI and international first-year F-1 students to campus. Thanks for following along with us this summer and we hope that you’ve enjoyed these summer transition guides. They were a labor of love so we really hope you read them! If this is the first volume you’re seeing, please make sure to go back and read through Vol. 1 and Vol. 2!

A few final reminders before you arrive on campus:

▶ Please give the AB Summer FAQ one more read through — trust us, a lot of your questions can still be answered there!

▶ If you are one of the very few who still has not signed and uploaded the Pre-O Participant Agreement and Media Release Form (or discussed why not with us!), then you will be unable to move-in and participate in Pre-Orientation until you do so. Therefore, please do this now.

▶ Attn International F-1 first-years!! Please make sure to complete the Aug 21 Arrival Information Form that you received via email!

▶ The dorm kit grab bags are a randomized selection of refurbished and gently used items. While they have been cleaned, like any linens, we strongly recommend that you wash them again once in your possession. Therefore, you may want to pack a set of sheets and a towel for your first night or two. We also unfortunately ran out of a few items, so in the event that you receive a grab bag that looks a little different, we’ve tried to supplement it with another item. These dorm kits are free of charge and entirely optional for you to take, although please note that commuter students will not be given a bag.

▶ Come to campus with an open mind and heart! This will be an experience like no other, and you’ll never get it back. You may joyously meet your new best friends during Pre-O and/or NSOP, or you may find your people a little later on — both are great and all are new experiences, so be kind to yourself and try not to compare yourself too much to others. We cannot wait to meet each and every one of you in the coming weeks!

▶ Before we sign off, we’d like to leave you with a favorite quote and some food for thought as you enter this next season of life.

“A mind that is stretched by new experiences can never go back to its old dimensions. Experience is the key to unlocking the potential of your mind. Embrace the unknown, seek new perspectives, and challenge yourself to grow. Once you’ve tasted the thrill of a stretched mind, there’s no going back to a life of stagnation and sameness.”

See you soon!

Your Access Barnard Team

P.S. To those that applied for our inaugural FAB cohort — yay! We’ll be reviewing applications and doing selection throughout Pre-O. You can expect to hear back from us by the first week of classes.

International Student Guidance

Hello, F-1 international students! We are so excited to welcome you to campus in just a few weeks!

Some important reminders:

NJ The documents that you need for arrival at the U.S. border are:

D Your printed and signed I-20 from Barnard College - all 3 pages stapled together (sign and date the bottom of the first page); attach your I-901 SEVIS payment receipt.

D Your valid and unexpired passport

D Your F-1 visa, which is inside your passport (not applicable for Canadian citizens)

Carry these items in your carry-on luggage, NOT in your checked baggage!

NJ Do not over-pack! You will be able to purchase items when you arrive. See this link for information on receiving mail and packages.

NJ If you haven’t already done so, complete our International Student Arrival Form to indicate your flight arrival, so that we can prepare for when you will be coming to campus. Upload a picture of your F-1 visa if you haven’t already submitted it to us!

NJ If you are planning on arriving before International Move-In Day (August 21st), know that you cannot move in early so you will need to make accommodations off campus. Reminder that you cannot arrive in the United States more than 30 days before September 5th (your program start date listed on your I-20).

NJ Read/review Chapter 1 of The International Student’s Survival Guide: NYC, which includes information on navigating New York City, preparing for your arrival, and safety.

Important F-1 Rules and Regulations:

NJ Always remain enrolled full-time (at least 12 credits) every semester.

NJ Report any changes to your contact information (phone, address, email), your major, your funding sources, and employment to ISS right away.

NJ ANY work off campus (whether paid or unpaid) requires authorization. Do NOT work off campus without permission from ISS first.

NJ You must talk with your DSO (international student advisor) if you are planning to do any of the following:

● Declare or change your major (let ISS know so that your SEVIS record can be updated).

● Take a leave of absence or a break from school.

● Change or update your contact information (you have a U.S. phone number, or you move to a new U.S. address).

● Need more time to complete your degree beyond the program end date listed on your I-20.

Homework for this month

Before you leave home, review the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Travel Information and Requirements for Reporting to the College upon your arrival. Here, you will find information about what documents you need to present to Customs (your printed and signed I-20, your passport and F-1 visa), and how to obtain your I-94 travel record (which you will need to submit to ISS after you have arrived).

Best wishes for a safe trip to New York, and we look forward to seeing you in-person on International Move-In Day, August 21, 2023!

Campus Resources Round-Up

FINANCIAL AID

A CLOSER LOOK AT STUDENT EMPLOYMENT

Office of Financial Aid

(Located in the Vagelos Center)

The Office of Financial Aid at Barnard assesses financial need. Based on this need determination, you will be awarded either Work Study or a Barnard College Job. The Office of Financial Aid is responsible for awarding funding, determining eligibility, and processing changes in aid but is unable to assist in finding a job. You may reach the Office of Financial Aid at finaid@ barnard.edu to discuss eligibility and awarding amounts.

Beyond Barnard

(Located in Elliott Hall, 49 Claremont Avenue, Second Floor)

The integrated hub for career support at Barnard. Beyond Barnard provides lifelong support to students and graduates as they define, pursue, and achieve success in their careers and communities. In addition to providing advising and resources around careers, off-campus internships, fellowships, and graduate school, Beyond Barnard works with students to help them find campus jobs and internships. In short, they are your go-to resource for support on identifying and applying to campus roles. Beyond Barnard also facilitates the payroll onboarding of students working in campus roles — but the office does not control financial aid packages or work-study awards.

WHAT IS STUDENT EMPLOYMENT

Whether you serve as a Research Assistant, work in the library, manage social media accounts for an administrative office, lead workshops in the Empirical Reasoning Center, answer patron questions at the gym, or anything in between—all of these roles count as Student Employment. In the context of their Student Employment roles, students develop professional skills and career experience that can be valuable on their resume, even as they earn wages to help offset their costs of education.

A student’s Student Employment Award counts toward their “self-help,” or the portion of tuition provided by students themselves. Work Study roles at Barnard are not guaranteed or assigned to students. Instead, students must apply to positions and are paid wages.

Types of Student Employment at Barnard

● Federal Work-Study (FWS): a program supported by the United States Federal Government. FWS is offered to students demonstrating the highest level of financial need at Barnard. FWS-eligible students may apply to work at Barnard, at Columbia University (including in jobs specifically earmarked for FWS students), and at a select number of Off-Campus Federal Work-Study Partners.

● Barnard College Job (BCJ): all students who are eligible for financial aid, but who are not awarded FWS, are able to pursue Work Study at Barnard College, and are assigned a BCJ. Students designated as BCJ recipients may not apply for jobs that specifically list Federal Work-Study as a criterion of eligibility.

Summer Transition Series 2023 | 7

WHAT TO BRING TO BARNARD IF YOU PLAN TO WORK THIS FALL

Whether you’re planning to work in a campus role, a paid internship, or off-campus at the local coffee shop, all new employees are required to complete a federal form called the I-9 within three days of being hired. This form is completed in two parts, including presenting identity and work authorization documents in-person.

Which documents can you present? A passport is easiest, but you can also present specific combinations of documents that prove both your identity and your authorization to work legally in the US. Click here to view acceptable documents, but please note - they must be originals, not copies. Add these documents to the items you plan to hand-carry on your journey to campus, and you’ll be all set!

Highlights to note:

D Students must apply for, and be hired into, positions in order to access funds.

D Students can earn more than their awarded amount listed in their financial aid package.

D Neither FWS nor BCJ awards constitute a guarantee of a job offer or position.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE & HOUSING

The Department of Residential Life & Housing at Barnard College seeks to provide opportunities for residential and nonresidential students that complement Barnard’s mission of intellectual risk-taking, discovery, and personal development. From moving into the residence halls to providing supportive resources to non-residential students, our department aims to ensure that students and their families are welcomed into the Barnard community and supported through graduation. Our approach is dedicated to helping students explore their purpose, cultivate community, and foster socially responsible innovation.

As you prepare for your fall semester arrival, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 212854-5561 or by email at housing@barnard.edu. For those living on campus, please review the list of prohibited items as you begin planning and packing. Remember that most of our residence halls do not have air conditioning, so you should plan for the heat and bring a fan! If you are one of our non-residential

students or waiting on a housing decision, feel free to contact offcampus@barnard.edu for any questions or resources on off-campus housing.

LEFRAK FOUNDATION CENTER FOR WELL-BEING

The mission of the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being is to unite initiatives that address the key dimensions of health and wellness, using holistic well-being support to propel success throughout the Barnard community.

Announced in fall 2020, the Francine LeFrak Center serves as a hub for wellness-related initiatives across campus and supports a 360-degree perspective of personal wellbeing: physical, mental, and financial. The centrality of the Francine LeFrak Center’s physical location in Barnard Hall will ensure that it will become a signature space on campus and will amplify the importance of holistic well-being, especially for girls and women.

The Francine LeFrak Center is setting the new standard for well-being in higher education — and education at all levels and in all settings — by applying a wide lens that includes multiple dimensions of well-being: physical, mental, and financial, using a framework that is inclusive of all members of the community, and creating scaffolding that establishes the knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary for well-being throughout that individual’s life.

The first floor of the LeFrak Center in Barnard Hall will be the home of a new 4,000-squarefoot fitness center, a mental well-being support space, and a financial well-being meeting space, a healthy food vending space, an open Wellness Commons for casual seating, and seminar rooms. There will also be

a multi-purpose, 225seat theatre/classroom/ event space on the lower level and the mezzanine level will have a new locker room, a lounge for women athletes, a low stimulation room and the Alcohol and Substance Awareness Program meeting room, and theatre support space.

We are pleased to provide innovative programming to support wellness before the doors of the LeFrak Center open in Barnard Hall in 2024. We are busily putting together a full calendar of programming for this coming year and will release it later in August. Programs offered this past year included monthly weekend Wellness Walk and Talks in Riverside Park on topics including understanding credit, accessing mental health resources, understanding the role of hormones, exploring mental health support in the Asian American/ Pacific Islander community, introducing the College’s Public Health Response Team, and an ask-me-anything conversation with Dr. Marina Catallozzi, Vice President for Health and Wellness, Chief Health Officer, and Leslie Grinage, Vice President for Student Experience and Dean of the College. We also offered Friday Lunch and Learn financial literacy programming throughout the year with a special focus on Access Barnard students and a student book group. At the end of each semester we instituted a Wellness Where You Are pop up space on campus during Midnight Breakfast, and throughout reading weeks which we provided wellness snacks and selfcare products.

We have a remarkable corps of LeFrak Student Health and Wellness Ambassadors on staff to help promote all of our programming and we look forward to introducing them to you. Our office is located in Milbank 115, just down the hall from Access Barnard. Please come by to say hello to Dr. Catallozzi!

You Know You’re An AB Student When…

What do you love about AB?

Educational Foundations is the most interesting and enjoyable class I’ve taken at Barnard. In this class, we learned about the history of public schools, freedom dreamed our ideal schools, and reflected on our own educational journeys. We discussed the struggles that come with these identities and ways that change should be made.

What’s your favorite AB memory?

The scavenger hunt we did during Pre-O two years ago where we got to run all around campus and Morningside Heights and take selfies!

What do you love about AB?

ASEEL SHARAWNEH

Meet the Team: Summer Student Leaders (SSLs)

Hello everyone! My name is Aseel, and I am a rising junior majoring in economics and Middle Eastern studies. I am beyond thrilled to serve as a global ambassador at Access Barnard for the upcoming year. I was born and raised in Jerusalem, Palestine, and I am excited to bring my unique perspective to this diverse community. Starting university can be overwhelming, but please know that you are not alone. At Barnard, you will be joining a diverse community of learners who come from all walks of life. This community will expose you to new ideas, perspectives, and experiences that will help you grow and develop as an individual. As you embark on this journey, my advice is to take advantage of the many resources available to you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek help when needed. I am eager to assist you in any way I can, whether it’s answering your questions or providing you with inspiration and motivation. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you and watching you thrive at Barnard. Welcome to the community!

ASEEL SHARAWNEH

Hi lovelies, my name’s Leana and I’m a rising junior majoring in Computer Science and Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies. I’m from Cameroon and I can’t wait to be your Global Ambassador throughout the summer. I was born in Cameroon but I’ve lived in a multitude of African countries including but not limited to South Africa, Congo Brazzaville and Angola. As your Global Ambassador you can come to me with questions about essentially anything, from how to fit in to where to buy bedding for cheap, I’ve got you. One of my biggest pieces of advice to you as you start getting ready for college would be a.) Make the most of this summer, spend time with family and friends and b.) Pack some comfort snacks from home as you’re getting ready to travel. You never know when you’re going to need a pick me up to cure your home sickness. I am soo happy that I get to experience the beginning of your college journey with you. See you on campus!

12 | AB Transitions Summer Guide Vol. 3

Hello everyone!! My name is Maira Molina and I am a rising sophomore majoring in mathematics and computer science. I am from Westchester, right outside the city. I will be your TA for your American Studies class. I am excited to see all of you in class and during office hours. You can stop by for anything you need or to just sit with a friend. A very helpful piece of advice that was given to me my senior year of high school was to take it easy your first semester. Take classes where you have some background knowledge on the material so you are able to get a grasp on the pace of college classes and still have fun as you adjust to the new environment. It is easy to get caught up in the stress culture on campus, so it is important to know the signs of burnout and when and where to seek help. You can ask me any questions and I am here to make sure your first month is as memorable as mine was this past year!

TAHIYAH HUSSAIN

MAIRA MOLINA

Hi everyone! My name is Tahiyah Hussain and I am a rising junior majoring in English with a minor in psychology on the urban teaching track. I was born and raised in Queens, New York but recently moved to Long Island. I am so excited to meet you all this summer as your English Teaching Assistant! I was in the same position as you all as an incoming first-year and my one piece of advice is for you to build connections and memories with the amazing people around you now because these are the people that will stick with you for the rest of your college years. It’s completely okay to feel scared and nervous transitioning into college. Just remember that everyone else around you is also going through the same thing which gives you all a chance to relate and learn from one another. I can help you navigate anything from accessing resources to registering for classes. I look forward to meeting you all!

Hi everyone! My name is Shreya Shivakumar and I’m a rising junior majoring in political science with a minor in science, ethics, and public policy on the pre-law track. This summer, I will be a Social Media Manager and incoming Peer Mentor at Access Barnard. I’m originally from Edison, New Jersey, but I was born near Chennai, India and grew up in Manhattan and Queens. On campus, I’m an executive editor at the Columbia Undergraduate Law Review and a curriculum director at Athena Mock Trial. My advice to incoming first-years would be to take advantage of all the incredible opportunities that Barnard, Columbia, and New York City will offer you, and to balance your academics with making long lasting friendships and memories. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or recommendations for things to do across NYC. I’m looking forward to meeting you all!

Meet the Team: AB Staff

Welcome to Barnard! The best advice I can offer you is that your experience here will be what you make of it. Maintaining a growth mindset and positive attitude will also only serve you well. Be accountable, take ownership of your decisions and behavior, and know that this is an incredibly special time that inevitably goes by way too fast – you’ll never get another start at Barnard, so embrace it fully! I was born and raised in Princeton, NJ to Korean immigrant parents, and NYC – tied with Seoul – are my two favorite cities in the world. I have worked in higher education and student affairs the past 15+ years, love travel, and prefer walking over any other mode of transportation. Feel free to ask me for any park, restaurant, or activity recs around the city!

Hello, and welcome! I lead our ISS office in our initiatives to support international students upon their acceptance to Barnard, throughout their time at Barnard, and through their employment after graduation. We ensure that international students are familiar and comfortable with U.S. rules and regulations that govern their status, and that international students also feel settled at Barnard in New York City, their new home away from home! ISS is the first stop for any questions and concerns related to studying and living in the U.S.

Welcome to Barnard! In my position as Senior Advisor for OP students, I primarily provide holistic advising to HEOP and CSTEP students. I collaborate with offices and departments on campus to partner, network and connect with our students in making their dreams a reality. As a first-generation, low income graduate and former OP student, I appreciated the help and assistance I received from my advisor and I am incredibly grateful to offer the same help to my students. Please stop by my office any time for a chat!

Suggested Packing List What should I pack?

We suggest that you pack (or plan to purchase upon arrival — which really depends on whether or not you are arriving by car or flying here, on domestic or international flights):

NJ Basic necessities

▶ Personal effects & important documents such as passport, social security card, etc. (if you are flying, always hand carry these!)

▶ Medications

▶ Chargers and electronics (laptop, tablet, phone, headphones, etc.) It is also worth it to invest in a surge protector power strip to increase your outlet accessibility options (note: extension cords are prohibited)

▶ Toiletries that you may not be able to purchase right away and will need your first few days/nights

▶ If you have a hard time adjusting to different foods, then maybe a few of your favorite non-perishable food/ snacks for the first few days/weeks

NJ Clothing (not too much though!) — even with climate change/crisis, NYC does still get cold at some point during the winter and you will need a winter coat. You will also appreciate a hat, gloves, scarf, and sturdier shoes. While we had basically no snow during the 2022-23 academic year, it does snow here; and it definitely rains. NYC has all 4 seasons, so it’s best to pack

wisely for layering across the seasons in your everyday wear, and to also have a few dressy options, business casual or professional attire for interviews/ presentations, workout clothes, sleepwear, etc.

NJ Linens for a twin bed (Twin XL sheets, pillows, pillowcase, comforter and/or a blanket)

NJ Towels/wash cloths, a bathrobe

NJ Shower slippers/flip-flops

NJ Shower caddy

NJ An umbrella

NJ Something that will make your dorm room feel like home (think framed photos, posters, room decor, a stuffed animal)

NJ Cleaning supplies (although pro-tip! vinegar + water and a microfiber cloth is a wonder!), inclusive of a duster (think Swiffer) or a handheld or small upright/ stick vacuum cleaner

NJ (Optional) A mug, plate, bowl, and utensils

NJ A small desk lamp

NJ A fan (oscillating/rotating or stationarypower will be key here during Aug & Sept)

NJ A backpack or bookbag

NJ A reusable water bottle (you will most likely get more of these as giveaways here, but you should come prepared with your own!!). Hydration takes no holiday.

16 | AB Transitions Summer Guide Vol. 3

The Green Sale

A sustainable dorm supply thrift shop

The Green Sale is Barnard’s own dorm supply thrift shop. Items in good and working condition were donated by students at the end of the last school year and are available to first year and transfer students for a small fee. Items include mini-fridges, room decor, lamps, fans, desk supplies and more! Check out last year’s sale here.

DATES:

Access Barnard Presale - A limited number of highly sought after items including mini-fridges, fans, and hot water kettles will be made available to students several days before the Green Sale. More details to follow.

The Green Sale - Sunday August 28th, time TBA. Come early, items are first come first serve and the line gets long quickly!

What To Expect During Pre-O Move-In

If you are arriving on campus by car, know that you cannot leave your car on Broadway while you move-in. Drop-off and unloading happens right in front of Barnard’s main gates at 117th St and Broadway. The driver should pull up (double-park if necessary) and put on the car’s hazards. The car should then be quickly unloaded. If the driver plans to help with the move-in process and stay for programming, then the driver needs to either move the car to street parking around campus (make sure to closely read parking signage for time limits, and pay at the pay stations!), or head for a parking garage.

We will have carts available to help you move your items, but a queue does form so you may have to wait a bit, depending on how busy things are when you arrive.

Access Barnard staff will be at a main checkin table alongside a representative from Residential Life & Housing, and we will also have a representative from Facilities present throughout move-in for any questions or issues regarding your dorm room. You will receive a welcome bag, your dorm room key and Barnard Student ID (again, provided that you have

properly uploaded and submitted your photo!!), and the opportunity to pick up an optional dorm kit. Parents & Family will have a separate hospitality area and tours will be offered to them.

GOING OVER MOVE-IN DAY TIMES ONCE MORE!

▶ On August 7th, OP Move-In is from 9:00am12:00pm

The OP Parent & Family Session is from 2:00-3:30pm

▶ On August 21st, FLI & Internat’l Move-In is from 10:00am-3:30pm

The FLI and International Parent & Family programming is from 4:00-6:00pm

FLI & Internat’l Student programming begins at 4:00pm

We strongly recommend that you arrive oncampus no later than 2:30pm so that you do not feel rushed before we officially kick-off at 4:00pm!!
