JENNY LEANA

Hi lovelies, my name’s Leana and I’m a rising junior majoring in Computer Science and Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies. I’m from Cameroon and I can’t wait to be your Global Ambassador throughout the summer. I was born in Cameroon but I’ve lived in a multitude of African countries including but not limited to South Africa, Congo Brazzaville and Angola. As your Global Ambassador you can come to me with questions about essentially anything, from how to fit in to where to buy bedding for cheap, I’ve got you. One of my biggest pieces of advice to you as you start getting ready for college would be a.) Make the most of this summer, spend time with family and friends and b.) Pack some comfort snacks from home as you’re getting ready to travel. You never know when you’re going to need a pick me up to cure your home sickness. I am soo happy that I get to experience the beginning of your college journey with you. See you on campus!

Hello everyone!! My name is Maira Molina and I am a rising sophomore majoring in mathematics and computer science. I am from Westchester, right outside the city. I will be your TA for your American Studies class. I am excited to see all of you in class and during office hours. You can stop by for anything you need or to just sit with a friend. A very helpful piece of advice that was given to me my senior year of high school was to take it easy your first semester. Take classes where you have some background knowledge on the material so you are able to get a grasp on the pace of college classes and still have fun as you adjust to the new environment. It is easy to get caught up in the stress culture on campus, so it is important to know the signs of burnout and when and where to seek help. You can ask me any questions and I am here to make sure your first month is as memorable as mine was this past year!

Hi everyone! My name is Tahiyah Hussain and I am a rising junior majoring in English with a minor in psychology on the urban teaching track. I was born and raised in Queens, New York but recently moved to Long Island. I am so excited to meet you all this summer as your English Teaching Assistant! I was in the same position as you all as an incoming first-year and my one piece of advice is for you to build connections and memories with the amazing people around you now because these are the people that will stick with you for the rest of your college years. It’s completely okay to feel scared and nervous transitioning into college. Just remember that everyone else around you is also going through the same thing which gives you all a chance to relate and learn from one another. I can help you navigate anything from accessing resources to registering for classes. I look forward to meeting you all!

Hi everyone! My name is Shreya Shivakumar and I’m a rising junior majoring in political science with a minor in science, ethics, and public policy on the pre-law track. This summer, I will be a Social Media Manager and incoming Peer Mentor at Access Barnard. I’m originally from Edison, New Jersey, but I was born near Chennai, India and grew up in Manhattan and Queens. On campus, I’m an executive editor at the Columbia Undergraduate Law Review and a curriculum director at Athena Mock Trial. My advice to incoming first-years would be to take advantage of all the incredible opportunities that Barnard, Columbia, and New York City will offer you, and to balance your academics with making long lasting friendships and memories. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or recommendations for things to do across NYC. I’m looking forward to meeting you all!
