What Are the 6 Best Foods For Your Hair?

Salmon

Fish like salmon are packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Your body can’t make these healthy fats, so you have to get them from food or supplements. They help protect you from disease, but your body also needs them to grow hair and keep it shiny and full.

Guava

This tropical fruit is loaded with vitamin C. It protects your hair from breaking. One cup of guava has 377 milligrams of vitamin C. That’s more than four times the minimum daily recommended amount.

Lean Poultry

When you don’t get enough protein, hair growth “rests.” Since it stops and older hairs fall out, you can have hair loss. To get protein from meat, pick lean options like chicken or turkey, which have less saturated fat.

Greek Yogurt

Protein is the building block of your locks. Greek yogurt also has an ingredient that helps with blood flow to your scalp and hair growth. It has vitamin B5 and pantothenic acid which is an ingredient on your hair and skincare product labels.

Iron-Fortified Cereal

Getting too little iron can lead to hair loss. But you can find it in fortified cereal, grains, and pastas, and in soybeans and lentils. Beef, especially organ meats like liver, have lots of it. Shellfish and dark leafy greens do as well.

Oysters

Oysters are rich in zinc. When you don’t have enough of this mineral in your diet, you can have hair loss -even in your eyelashes. Cells that build hair rely on zinc to help them work their hardest. You can also find this mineral in beef, crab, and lobster.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR FINANCIAL WELLNESS

How much and what kind of debt do you have?

You may have heard there’s good and bad debt. But the truth is, there’s no such thing as good debt. All debt holds you back and keeps you paying for the past.

What’s your net worth?

A positive net worth means what you own is worth more than what you owe—which will only be the case if you pay off your debt-including your home.

Are you able to pay all your bills without using a credit card or using savings?

Getting on a zero-based budget is the best way to tell your money where to go each month.

Do you have an emergency fund?

You should have a seperate savings account to cover at least 3 months of expenses in case you have an unexpected lose in income.

Do you have a reliable plan for long-term investing?

This means consistently saving to build wealth for the future.

Do you give?

You might wonder how giving money away will improve your financial health, but this foundation will change you in more ways than one.

IN A HOT HOUSING MARKET

BIRMINGHAM IS SIZZLING

Why sell off-market to one buyer?

When you could net so much more by listing.

A home in Birmingham sold for 140% over asking price in July. This real estate market is on fire! The main reason is that inventory is so low. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of the competition. With conditions like these, we highly discourage selling your home off-market as you may be leaving money on the table (and lots of it). So don’t be a secret seller - let us help you showcase your home and maximize your profits.

In recent years, a mere 5% of homes were listed in Mountain Brook, Homewood and Vestavia. There are fewer homes listed now than five years ago. Talk about a limited supply! The demand for residential real-estate is through the roof in Birmingham, and inventory is at an all-time low. So, if you’re thinking: “Bring me an offer,” then stop waiting. Now is the time! Act fast to get the most return on your investment.

How long will this last? It’s hard to predict. As you can see from the information below, median days on market range as low as 2 days. Homes are selling 100-104% of listing price. In 2022, Homewood inventory was 36% lower than 2019. Rates have gone up, inventory has gone down, and prices are through the roof.

What are you waiting for? There is never a bad time to make moves in real estate. Call or text me today at 205-612-9432. I’ll get you the results you’re looking for!

What I Eat

Breakfast

Protein Shake OR

2 hard boiled eggs, 1/4 avocado, 1 banana “If I workout in the morning, I start my day with a post workout recovery shake. I choose this because it has a balance of 3:1 carbohydrates to protein which is effective in aiding the body’s recovery. If I workout in the afternoon, I eat two hard boiled eggs, a quarter of an avocado, and a banana. This is a great balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat and it works well to fuel my body wirh energy.”

Snack (morning)

RX Bar

“I usually reach for an RX bar around 9:30 AM.”

Lunch

Green salad with a protein and fat

“I typically eat a salad with protein and fat. The fat consists of nuts, olive oil and/or avocado. I love a healthy dose of vegetables mid day. The protein and fat sustain my energy.”

MANAGING MEALS, WORK, WORKOUTS AND FAMILY

It’s all about priorities. I identify what is a non-negotiable in my life and schedule that in first. Everything else fits in the remaining hours. If it is not in my calendar, I am not truly committed to doing it.

Dinner

Protein + Veggies + Starch

“For dinner, I eat protein, vegetables, and a starch such as rice or potatoes. I use to avoid starches. When I was pregnant with my first child in 2015, I added them back in and really loved the results I experienced both in energy, satiety, and in my physique.”

SUPPLEMENTS

“HA! I take many supplements, and all are consumed in the morning upon waking. Some of my favorites are branched-chain amino acids, probiotics, a thermogenic, and a multivitamin.”

ALCOHOL

“I typically reach for red wine. My favorite is a CDP. If I’m at the pool or lake you’ll find a tequila soda in hand.”

FIGHTING CRAVINGS

“I don’t keep anything in the house that is cravable. The craziest things we have at the house are Lara bars.”

Handling Your Child’s Cell Phone Addiction

Crystal is the President and Founder of Nurture Alabama where she is working to expand access and shift the conversation about mental health so that all Alabamians, especially from historically marginalized communities, can thrive. Her new book, 21 Day Journey to Strive for a Healthier You, is availbale now. She can be reached on her website nurturebham.com

Cellular device usage has become pronounced for children since the pandemic, because kids were socially isolated. Children developed bad habits surrounding using cellular devices to maintain social connections. Some children rely on external validation from peers which can boost their mood when they receive a “like” or receive compliments from others. Children also worry about the fear of missing out (FOMO), therefore, they are constantly engaged on social media to stay connected to “what’s happening in the lives of others.”

Some parents provide kids a cell phone at a young age expecting them to understand how to set parameters around using the device. Children are not self-disciplined or developmentally mature enough to understand the importance of creating boundaries around using their cellular devices or understand the mental health repercussion from being dependent on cell phones.

Removal of their cell phone can create conflict/agitation, because they have become dependent on it. The addiction kids have to their cell phones can be equated to substance dependency or gambling. There are stimulating effects to phone addictions. Kids experience a surge of dopamine (reward pathway to the brain) when they receive a pleasurable response from others on social media or text messages. If children are preoccupied with over usage of a cell phone, it can interfere with their mood and behavioral responses. A recent study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) revealed that teens who use social media more than three hours per day may be at heightened risk for mental health problems.

Try these four things:

1) Set time parameters. Ask your kids not to use their cell phone during family time, study time and schedule a time to store their phone away before bedtime.

2) Family sharing. Family sharing on devices provide kids access to apps for kids under the age of 13. This is appropriate to monitor younger kids access to age-appropriate information.

3) Make sure both parents are on the same page. It’s imperative that parents communicate with each other whether they are married or coparenting expectations/rules surrounding cell phone access. Parents should honor each other’s decision and be a united front to ensure kids are consistent following rules set around cell phone access.

4) Set-up location tracking. This provides parents access to their kid’s location and you can observe kids behaviors in terms of where they are spending time during their day.

Parents can support their children by helping their children develop self-discipline around using the cell phone. Encourage kids to develop routines and habits that don’t require cell phone access. Provide your child support and avoid criticism of them, engage them in conversations about appropriate social interactions, engage your kids in conversations and spend quality time with your kids to encourage face time conversations. If you recognize your kids need mental health support, contact a mental health professional.

HOW A DIVISION-1 ATHLETE TRAINS

We asked University of Alabama pole vaulter, Riley White to tell us what she does to keep in competetive shape.

What does your in-season fitness/training schedule look like? In season, we have specific NCAA hour guidelines that we have to follow to make sure we aren’t overtraining. These hours change once we get closer to season. I start my day with waking up at 6:45 to get to morning weights at 7:30! We have a morning lift that is a little different each morning. After that I shower and eat at the athletic dining hall. Practice in the afternoon is usually around 1:00/2:00 depending on what our workout is that day or if we are pole vaulting along with our workout. We don’t actually pole vault everyday even though we train everyday. We typically have a Wednesday practice that is on our own and then Sundays off. Fall training is pretty tough and definitely mentally and physically exhaust ing, but it’s what sets us up to have a great competition season!

What does your off-season fitness/training schedule look like? Depending on how far you make it into competition season, you get the month of June to workout on your own. This allows you to have a mental and physical break before having slightly more structured workouts in the months of July and August. I like to do activities like golf, line dancing, Zumba, circuit training, swimming, and going on walks! I love to be active, but also venture out to keep working-out fun! I don’t stress too much about being too structured because I’m so structured once fall training begins. Some days I’ll go walk for 3 miles and then hit the gym later on! Other days I’ll just go line dance or stay in the gym for 2 hours just lifting. It’s important to me to just move my body and stay fit, but also love what I’m doing so that it stays fun.

What is you cardio vs weight-lifting ratio? As a pole vaulter, our cardio looks a little different than most. A lot of our cardio is what I like to call quick deaths! It’s more explosive work and not for long periods of time. We definitely do cardio on a daily basis but it’s to build power and speed rather than cardio to lose weight. Of course, it gets us into shape but it’s more about performance rather than looks. We lift 4 times a week with two of those lift days having cardio-involved circuits. I can honestly say we dread those days, but they are so good for us. They build character.

Do you do heavy weights with fewer reps, or lighter with more reps? In the fall we start out with lighter weight and more reps and then move into heavier weights with fewer reps the closer we get into season. We have a day where we max-out to help figure out how much we should be lifting and for how many reps. Thank goodness I have an amazing strength coach named JD O’Brien. He understands all of the science behind it and how important it is to do the heaviest weight as quickly as possible during our Olympic lifts. If you aren’t moving it fast enough, you aren’t building power. If it isn’t heavy enough, you also aren’t building power. It’s pretty neat how science and math play into all of our training.

Do you have a nutritionalists or someone who guides your diet? have a team nutritionist. We have access to a DEXA to figure out our muscle to fat ratio. This allows us to adjust our eating to meet our bodies needs to become the best athlete we can be. As a female who has struggled with finding a healthy relationship with food, it’s important to have a nutritionist that is good at educat ing athletes so we understand what our body’s needs are and why they need those things. I have had to change my way of thinking so that I’m fueling my body to perform rather than eating very little and staying away from carbs so I can be smaller. It is so important for me to fuel up with protein and carbs so that my body is holding on to muscle and fueled to make it through those tough workouts. Track athletes come in so many shapes and sizes and it’s so hard not comparing ourselves along with comparing ourselves with girls who aren’t athletes. I have had to be kinder to myself and love my body for what it accomplishes for me rather than focusing on having cellulite on my legs or being a little more muscular than other women. All in all, I am very thankful to have such a supportive team and staff that educates me on how to be successful both physically and mentally. You can’t be successful in one area and not the other.

Staying Fit With a Genetic Disease

Maddie was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth. CF is a progressive, genetic disease that affects the lungs and the digestive system. Throughout her life, she’s had to take many medications, do breathing treatments to clear mucus from her lungs, and take very good care of her body. She’s been hospitalized many times, but thankfully due to exercise, new medications and genetic therapies, she’s remained out of the hospital for the past six years.

How does exercising affect CF and your lifestyle?

Exercise has been the foundation to keeping my Cystic Fibrosis under control. Exercising at a high level increases my lung VO2 capacity and has allowed me to retain excellent lung function. When I am working out hard and I want to quit, I think about the lung testing I take with every doctor’s visit. These tests are my motivation to keep going through a difficult workout. I am proud to report that my lung functionality is high for anyone my age regardless of whether they have Cystic Fibrosis. I hope my lung fitness can be an inspiration to others with Cystic Fibrosis and give them hope they can also use exercise to improve their own personal health. The way that I view exercise is similar to how I fight CF. I work hard every single day of my life to stay healthy. Some days are harder than others, but I choose every day to fight. If I were to just fight occasionally, I would not see the results that I need and want. It is in the daily habits that battles are won over a long period of time.

What exercises works best for you?

I use a wide variety of exercise routines to maintain and increase my fitness levels. Variety is the key to overall fitness and it also helps to avoid burnout and mental and physical ruts. Cardio, circuit strength training, stretching, dance, functional movement exercises, pilates, and yoga are some of my various exercise methods. Some days my workouts are low intensity with elements of fun incorporated into the workout. On the other end of the spectrum, my lung capacity fitness is dependent on high intensity cardio interval training. With these routines, I push the upper limits of my max VO2 through intense cardio workouts once or twice a week. Prior to these intense workouts, I have a sense of dread, but afterwards, I celebrate and have a big feeling of satisfaction.

What are your immediate goals with your fitness regimen?

My goal is to maintain or increase my fitness levels through education. The exercise science and fitness industry in experiencing unprecedented and significant advancements in nutrition, supplementation, exercise science, mental health, recovery and overall well being. The challenge is the volume of “new” information can be overwhelming. The key is to follow the most reputable experts in the industry who published the most widely peer reviewed research. There is also a lot of “nonsense” data emerging that promotes an easy or shortcut approach to fitness. I like to follow the time tested maxim that “if something seems too good to be true, it is hogwash”.

What are your more long-term exercise/fitness goals?

It’s simple. Ensure my exercise habits remain a significant part of my daily routine for life. I need to constantly monitor my routines to ensure that I am not putting undue stress on any part of my body that would preclude me from exercising in my senior years. I also want to not only extend my life for decades to come but to ensure that I maintain a high quality of life. When I was born, the average person with Cystic Fibrosis had a life expectancy of 20 years old. With new medications, ongoing research, my own personal dedication to fitness and nutrition, there is no reason why my life expectancy cannot exceed that of a person born without Cystic Fibrosis. This is my goal and I am confident that I can achieve it.

Have You Noticed the People With the Most Beautiful Skin?

How to combine an individually customized program with the most innovative treatments to create your best possible skin.

Hasn’t your head turned when you see someone with really beautiful skin? They don’t just stand-out, they radiate. But even the most beautiful skin requires upkeep to retain its flattering structure. It’s all about two things: a customized plan for your unique complexion, and the most innovative treatments administered by the right expert. Gunn Dermatology has put together a deeply discounted plan that will radiate your best you. The most common of those treatments include Vivace’s, Hydrafacials, Neuromodulators as well as over 8 different laser treatments and 4 different non laser treatments to make the skin tighter, smoother in tone and texture, as well as healthier, leading to a more youthful glow. So by the end of the year you’ll be turning heads. The Fireworks membership includes:

Resurfacing is used to address blemishes that occur in our face over time. There are different procedures based on what is desired by the patient, but resurfacing can address everything from wrinkles and acne scars to hyperpigmentation and sun damage. Nonablative resurfacing requires less downtime than ablative, which has a reverse-aging effect on the skin. A full face resurfacing is already worth the price of the monthly membership alone, but there are plenty more treatment options that come with the Fireworks deal.

3 VIVACE OR ULTHERAPY TREATMENTS

Vivace and ultherapy are two different methods of treating skin imperfections such as scars, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage. Both options have minimal discomfort and downtime associated with them. Vivace treatments use radiofrequency technology and precision microneedling while ultherapy uses ultrasound technology to provide a “non-surgical facelift” as it is commonly called.

HYDRAFACIAL OR DIAMOND GLOW MONTHLY

Do you want your skin to look and feel refreshed? Of course you do! HyrdaFacials provide the perfect method to deep-clean and exfoliate while providing the hydration our body so craves. This treatment is great to combat acne, skin conditions, and assist in anti-aging effects on the body. We recommend this on a monthly basis.

4 BOTOX TREATMENTS INCLUDING FOREHEAD, ELEVENS, AND BROW LIFT

Botox allows medical professionals to treat bothersome muscles by blocking the nerve impulses that reach out to them. This helps to remove wrinkles, lines, and other blemishes as the muscles begin to relax. The Fireworks Membership includes Botox treatment in notorious wrinkle areas such as the forehead, elevens (frown lines), and eyebrows.

5 IPL, SKIN PEN OR NON-ABLATIVE RESURFACING, OR AQUA GOLD

While it may seem like you are already receiving more than enough bang for your buck with the Fireworks Membership, it’s important to include the IPL, Skin Pen, or Aqua Gold options when listing the benefits. These options use different techniques (intense pulsed light, microneedling, etc.) to address irregularities such as scars, darker patches of skin, and spider veins.

Taking care of our bodies can feel like one endless to-do list, but leaning into the skincare experts we have around us can take away a lot of the stress (which is also good for our skin)! It’s easy to see why the Fireworks Membership is a must.

If you have any questions visit Dr. Gunn in Crestline or her newest location in Lane Parke. You can also reach her at gunndermatology.com or (205) 415-7536.

What is Perimenopause?

One morning I woke up and thought someone had blown up an innertube around my waist!! What was going on? That is exactly what I felt happened when I hit perimenopause but I had no idea what perimenopause was or what to do about it.

Perimenopause means “around menopause”. It can be called the menopause transition.

I hit perimenopause around 40, with my first symptom being sleep disruption. However, I did not connect the dots until ten years later. If I had known then what I know NOW, I would have advocated for more than just a sleeping pill.

Today women are experiencing perimenopause as early as their late 30s. The good news is we do not have to suffer. But we do have to advocate for ourselves and look for answers.

We are all different, so we will all go through this transition in life differently.

Here are some things you could do through your menopause journey to help you feel your best.

> Eat whole foods, less processed foods. Sugar is everywhere in processed foods, and sugar will affect hot flashes, mood, and belly fat. Aim for foods that come from the ground or have a mother.

> Create a sleep routine. Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time.  Shut down all screens at least an hour before you go to bed.

> Move your body. Movement is good for depression and anxiety and, of course, belly fat. Try to get in at least 7,000 steps a day. Strength training is more important than ever as we age due to muscle loss.

> Manage Your Stress. Remember to breathe! We will always have stressors, but learning how to manage our stress is essential to our overall health. Mediation and walking in nature are my favorite ways to manage stress.

> Drink water. Our bodies are made up mostly of water. Hydration helps with our energy levels.

> Create a positive mindset. A morning routine can prepare you for success for the rest of the day. Check out the book The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.

> Ask about Hormone Therapy. It can be very beneficial. Go to your doctor and advocate for yourself.

What is a Couples Counseling Intensive?

At its core, a Couples Counseling Intensive is an immersive experience, expertly guided by seasoned professionals, designed to equip you with the practical skills required to strengthen your relationship. The magic happens when both partners actively engage in practicing these skills together, reigniting hope and building momentum toward positive change.

Why Choose an Intensive?

Time: Traditional therapy sessions often fail to offer the opportunity to delve deep into your relationship’s complexities. In an intensive, you’ll have the needed space to learn and practice these skills with active support and guidance, allowing you to make progress that typically takes much longer. Dedicating a larger block of time to focus and work on your relationship is a better option for making significant progress in your efforts to restore and rejuvenate your connection to each other.

Cost: Choosing to do an intensive is choosing to make a substantial investment in your relationship, your family, and your future. Consider the value of building momentum and catalyzing change in a fraction of the time and expense couples spend in the slow and uncertain path of weekly therapy sessions. And, ultimately, paying for an intensive is a significantly more cost-effective and hope-full alternative to the mess, pain and expense of divorce.

How Does It Work?

Our Couples Counseling Intensives offer various levels of immersion, carefully tailored to address your specific needs. Options range from mini-intensives (4-5 hours) for a concentrated boost, to fullday or two-day intensives for a more in-depth exploration. To ensure the best experience, we collaborate with you to find dates that suit your schedule. Before the intensive, both partners will complete comprehensive questionnaires, providing valuable insights into your relationship, and allowing us to tailor the experience precisely to your unique circumstances.

Can

I Guarantee a Better Relationship?

As much as we’d like to promise a guaranteed outcome, the success of the intensive depends on your commitment to both personal growth and relational healing and growth. Rest assured, the skills and education provided during the intensive are well-researched and proven to enhance communication and intimacy. But true change requires effort and practice from both partners.

Invest in Your Future Today!

Seize the opportunity to rewrite the narrative of your relationship. Don’t let unresolved misunderstandings obstruct your path to happiness any longer. Both of you deserve to love and be loved in ways that honor who you are and what you value. Take the next step on your journey to a better relationship, a better life. In today’s fast-paced and chaotic world, achieving total wellness has become extremely important to living your best life. Total wellness encompasses the harmonious balance of three key aspects: spirituality, physical health, and emotional or mental well-being. These three pillars work synergistically to ensure a person’s overall happiness, fulfillment, and quality of life.

Spirituality: Nurturing the Soul

Spirituality is a deeply personal  journey that connects individuals to something greater than themselves. It involves finding meaning, purpose, and inner peace in life. Engaging in spiritual practices such as meditation, prayer, or mindfulness promotes a sense of tranquility, calm, and clarity, allowing individuals to tap into their inner wisdom, guiding them through life’s challenges. Spiritual beliefs and practices provide a sense of hope, resilience, and strength during difficult times, offering comfort and solace, helping individuals navigate through adversity with grace. Spirituality often fosters a deep sense of interconnectedness with others and the world. This connection leads to increased compassion, empathy, and a desire to contribute positively to the well-being of others.

Physical Health: Nurturing the Body

Physical health constitutes the well-being of our physical body and its various systems. It encompasses exercise, nutrition, rest, and overall self-care. Maintaining physical health results in improved energy and vitality. Regular exercise coupled with a balanced diet have major positive imparts on physical health. It enhances energy levels and boosts metabolism. Taking care of this aspect of your health allows individuals to engage fully in daily activities and pursue their passions. Prioritizing physical health reduces the risk of chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer. It also strengthens the immune system, promoting overall well-being.

Total Wellness

Nurturing Spirituality, Physical Health, and Emotional Well-Being

Emotional/Mental Health: Nurturing the Mind

Emotional or mental health refers to our psychological and emotional well-being. It involves understanding and managing our emotions, building healthy relationships, and coping with stress effectively. Taking care of our emotional health equips us with the ability to handle life’s challenges, setbacks, and stressors more effectively. It fosters emotional resilience and allows us to bounce back from adversity. Emotional well-being also enables individuals to develop and maintain healthy relationships. It cultivates empathy, effective communication, and active listening skills, fostering stronger connections and support networks. Prioritizing emotional health involves self-reflection and self-care. What’s the Deal With These Weight Loss

Injectables?

Weight loss injectables are the rage right now. So we decided to put them to the test and see what kind of results we could get. Here’s what we’ve seen.

THERE’S ALWAYS A TRENDING WEIGHT LOSS METHOD. The current red-hot trend are the various injectables. They seem to be everywhere right now. In fact, chances are you know several people taking them whether they admit or not. Some of the prescription injectable weight loss medications available include: Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy. They were designed as diabetes drugs originally, and now used to treat obesity. The demand for these drugs are skyrocketing — the U.S. saw shortages this year that made access difficult for patients who rely on them. According to Elon Musk’s own twitter post, he gives credit to Ozempic/Wegovy as part of his 30lb weight loss. Are these drugs just another part of the endless weight loss hype, or are they legit? And what about the side-effects? We decided to follow someone locally and see how they progressed. Here’s what we found out.

About Town does not encourage or discourage anyone from taking any of these injectables, and as with all medications, you should always consult a physician.

The Basics:

In it’s most simple terms, these drugs work by reducing your appetite. Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy are three of the most popular. Wegovy and Ozempic are two names for the same drug: semaglutide. Ozempic is the name of the drug as prescribed for people with diabetes. The FDA approved Ozempic for people with diabetes in 2017 and approved Wegovy for people who have obesity or are overweight and have additional health problems in 2021. According to their website, Mounjaro is an injectable prescription medicine that is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It was first approved in May 2022. (Our volunteer took Mounjaro.) They are injected once a week (usually in the stomach). The needle is not a traditional syringe but more like an insulin pen with a very small needle.

They only come with a doctor prescription, and may not be covered by your health insurance plan. If not, they are very expensive. A typical monthly dose will cost around $1000-$1400, but coupons can be found which could cut the cost in half. Reports suggest that the next major innovation coming to these weight-loss drugs will be their availability in pill form. They will have the effectiveness of injectables at potentially far lower costs.

Most people who have taken these injections say it crushes their cravings, and while not having a sense of repulsion towards food, they feel full easily. Food becomes something you just don’t think about. Patients have also said that after several months their taste buds change, and they find themselves craving healthier foods.

How They Work

Dr. Mohini Aras at New York Presbyterian says, “First, it’s important to understand that our brain is designed to defend against starvation and retain our weight. When we lose weight, naturally occurring hormones send a message to our brain to increase hunger and cravings and slow our metabolism down. Our brain even makes our muscles more efficient, so we don’t burn as many calories with the same activity; this is a starvation response. As a result, people tend to yo-yo: They will lose, regain, lose, and regain weight. Weight loss medications activate the hormones that we naturally produce to regulate weight. These medications target appetite and hunger, helping people feel full

Chances are you know several people taking them, whether they admit or not.

sooner and stay full longer. They may also impact cravings, thoughts of food, and binge eating.”

Our Volunteer

Our subject is a female in her mid-40s. She is not diabetic, and as stated above she has been using Mounjaro. Her goal is to lose 35lbs. She has been taking it for 2 months and has lost 14lbs. She has not altered her exercise routine from where she was before she started. As she explains, “Pure and simple, my main goal was to lose weight. Secondary goal was to get back into shape, but I felt like I needed to lose some weight before I could get my body moving properly. When I talked to the doctor about my goals, she completely got it and we moved forward with her suggestion of using Mounjaro. As a mid-40s woman, it is harder to lose weight – you eat all protein, you fast, you do WW and nothing stuck or was sustainable. I had other friend who had done the injections and, even though I thought I was “cheating”, I wanted to try.” It’s worth noting that our volunteer began taking Mounjaro at the beginning of Summer, and was not on her usual routine. This meant vacations and off-time that presented many temptations to splurge on food and alcohol.

Reservations and Fears

“(1) Physical side effects. You hear horror stories about people who can’t leave the bathroom because of an upset stomach –whether it is diarrhea or nausea. Will it affect me that way? Will it even work for me and HOW? After taking the first injection I was very aware of everything going on with me – do I feel sick? Is my stomach hurting? This fear subsided after the 2nd shot, and I’ve experienced no side effects.”

“(2) Society shame. Will people judge me for this? I am taking a shot to lose weight – it can be seen as a cop-out. Will people think I just don’t want to put in the work to lose weight? Truth is, I was tired of how I felt and looked and I wanted some help. I made sure I was eating well and I kept in contact with the doctor who prescribed the injections to make sure I was on track.

I’ve heard rumors of moms who have given this to their high school aged daughters so they could lose weight before an event. That scares me!” According to Mounjaro, it has not been approved for people under 18.

Side Effects

Some reports have said the side effects of semaglutide are more serious. Our volunteer, who used Mounjaro, hasn’t experienced any side effects. “I had no initial or on-going side effects. When I started the injections, I tried to make a point to just eat well, but eat like normal and see what happened.” But, some of the side effects that are listed, and can be experienced by others, are nausea, dizziness, headaches and an elevated heart rate.

Effect on Energy Level

“This might have been the main thing I noticed at the beginning, I was so tired. I wasn’t exercising any more than usual, or even that much at all, but I was so tired. I was eating less (that is the result of the shots), therefore I wasn’t fueling my body with as much food. I had to make some adjustments, for example, even though I wasn’t always hungry for a breakfast, I would have some eggs to have the protein, or part of a bagel to fill with carbs. This helped and my body adjusted over time.”

Effect on Cravings

“You just are not interested in food –sweets, salty, doesn’t matter. I didn’t notice a direct resistance to any particular type of food, I just didn’t have a desire to reach for chips in the afternoon, have a dessert, or park by the appetizer dish. What’s so great is that I can eat with my family. My preparation isn’t different than their’s. I just eat less of whatever they’re eating. With other diet plans I’ve done in the past meant, I had to eat particular foods. This makes a busy lifestyle a lot easier.”

Moving Forward

A down side from any injectable can be the ‘crash’ when you come off the drug. Many people who go on injectables suffer from significant weight gain when they stop taking them. “Obviously taking a shot each week isn’t a logical on-going scenario, so I have been very conscious about learning portion control. Order what you want, just have a little of it. When you are full, stop. I make a point to eat healthy, but don’t fear a little bite of sweet here and there – keep it small.”

About Town will have an update in the next issue.

Quick Guide to Pilates

Pilates is having a moment. With mentions in almost every podcast or mainstream media article lately about insider strength training secrets, what is it that makes Pilates so buzzy?

With Pilates you achieve a high level of results in a low impact way, says Alison Page, owner of the longest running studio in Birmingham Aero Joe Pilates. Using spring resistance, as originally designed by Joseph Pilates, on non-motorized apparatus like the Reformer, Wunda Chair and Tower, speeds up the process of attaining core strength, creating a fluid workout that actually feels good.

Pilates goes beyond aesthetic benefits to provide lower stress levels and even relieve tension, aches and pains.

The

beginner’s

guide to Pilates

Because Pilates is low impact it is a great fit for beginners, those in injury or post-surgical recovery and “active-aging” types. At AERO JOE PILATES we support all bodies in motion. Our clients, from professional athletes to those with special conditions, are better able to do the activities they love in any stage of life, Page says.

Classical Pilates offers the original “A,B,C’s” of the method, but trust in your teacher’s experience is the most important element. Any form of Pilates can be modified to suit any individual with a certified, experienced teacher. Most students find, in time, that they perform the exercises with fewer variations as they improve motor function, flexibility, posture & strength.

The effectiveness derives from a combination of both body weight training & spring weight resistance in a multi-apparatus system, including the mat Pilates. An all-apparatus equipped studio provides peak Pilates results. Reformer classes are as popular as ever! However, all the apparatus work together as a training system, and are worthwhile to achieve the Pilates ideal of uniform muscle development. Plus it’s simply more fun to discover the total benefits of all of the equipment in the studio!

Unlike grueling fitness routines that are difficult to stick with, Pilates is mindful. By focusing on alignment & breathing -- all while being challenged, Pilates goes beyond aesthetic benefits to provide lower stress levels and even relieve tension aches & pains. With a dedicated Pilates practice, ideally 2-3 times a week, the students, Page says, visibly improve total-body strength without the strain of other workouts.

The best gateways to start are a private lesson or an intro / beginner level group class. No matter your fitness level, getting familiar with the Pilates specifics first -- like alignment, class flow and how the apparatus itself moves, will provide good foundations for success.

More than a workout, Pilates students find their motivation in community along with others that want to move mindfully & have like-minded wellness goals.

What is Atrial Fibrillation?

September Is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month. Learn more about this condition that causes irregular heartbeats and how to treat it.

We asked Dr. David Cox with Cardiology Specialists of Birmingham for his insight.

September is an important month for many reasons. It’s when the weather finally starts to cool down (hopefully), when college football kicks back into full gear, and the 9th month of the year represents the beginning of the fall. One of the most important milestones found in September however is that it has been designated as National Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Awareness Month by the Heart Rhythm Society. In the spirit of the occasion, let us ask what exactly is AFib and how can we become more aware of the symptoms to look for and the impact it would have on our body?

AFib is a cardiac ailment that causes the heart to beat irregularly. Studies have shown that millions of people in the United States have an undiagnosed form of Atrial Fibrillation. For many, this means that the symptoms start off relatively mild but could include life-altering symptoms such as tiredness, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeats, feeling weak, and palpitations. These effects put an added strain on the heart which can lead to more serious symptoms such as blood clots and heart failure.

Clots often form from an irregular heartbeat since the blood going through the heart is not being pumped as efficiently as it should be. If a clot becomes displaced it can block the flow of blood at another part of the body and cause a brain stroke.

Now that we’ve listed the symptoms and gotten our readers anxious, it’s time for the good news. Atrial Fibrillation can be treated at any stage of the condition. Medication is very effective at controlling heart rhythm for most patients.

Blood thinners can be used for more advanced cases of AFib. In the vast majority of cases non-invasive measures will be effective enough to address Atrial Fibrillation, but surgery and other procedures can be used if medicine is not enough. Physical exercise such as walking has been shown to lessen the symptoms of AFib in some, but it is still recommended to follow the instructions provided by your doctor.

Irregular heartbeats were first documented by Chinese physicians in 2100 BC. This early discovery has provided many years for medical professionals to observe and treat the condition. This includes the first machine that was able to detect Atrial Fibrillation, which was invented in 1906. AFib is more understood than ever by doctors and nurses in 2023, but the general public is still largely unaware of this heart condition that millions have.

National Atrial Fibrillation Month encourages individuals to share information about the heart condition with their family and friends. Simply getting the word out is a huge step in creating a more aware and healthy nation. Another ask during AFib Month in September is for those experiencing potential symptoms to visit their doctor.

While it can often feel scary to enter a medical office to get tested for new conditions, being informed about potential health concerns early is the best way to improve our physical health.

The Magic City is lucky to be a hub for some of medicine’s top minds and most caring souls who are ready to educate the greater population. For more information on AFib and treatment options in Birmingham, we asked a few questions to Dr. David Cox with Cardiology Specialists of Birmingham.

What symptoms will I experience that will tell me I might have atrial fibrillation?

First of all, I would like to thank you for asking me, a humble interventional cardiologist, to field these questions about atrial fibrillation (laughs). I tell patients that there are two kinds of cardiologists, plumbers and electricians, and I am a plumber…but…I got this “guy”…

Really, atrial fibrillation is “bread and butter cardiology”--we (cardiologists) all see this condition and whether we are invasive/ noninvasive cardiologists, heart failure specialists, or interventional cardiologists, we all encounter patients with atrial fibrillation, perform risk assessment, and institute a treatment plan. Sometimes we might refer the patient on to the electrophysiologist up front, or, if atrial fibrillation becomes refractory to our initial treatment plan, then refer the patient on to the electrophysiologist for advanced pharmacological therapies or invasive electro-interventional therapies.

I usually begin explaining atrial fibrillation to patients in this way: you have a pacemaker in your heart–the one the Lord gave you–that is a physical structure in the heart’s right upper chamber that electrically stimulates the heart muscle to beat in a coordinated fashion. Atrial fibrillation is a chaotic electrical impulse that can come from almost any part of the upper chambers, often times near structures called the pulmonary veins in the left atrium.

Atrial fibrillation generally poses two problems:

1) The rate is usually rapid (> 100 beats per minute), and this can cause some feeling of palpitations, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, or apprehension and uneasiness, to name a few. Sometimes, the irregularity and rapidity of the heartbeat can manifest as signs and symptoms of congestive heart failure, with worsening shortness of breath with less and less exertion or exacerbated by lying flat, decreased exercise tolerance, and persistent swelling of the lower extremities. Sometimes, the patient may

You know, we are very blessed to have many capable electrophysiologists in Birmingham.

statins. Probably the greatest positive effect at reducing chances of atrial fibrillation with statins is in people who have already had atrial fibrillation in the past, that is, decreasing the risk of recurrent atrial fibrillation.

What are the local trends in Birmingham? Are the numbers going up or down?

have no symptoms whatsoever and be “in” atrial fibrillation, only to be found serendipitously on an electrocardiogram.

2) The irregularity of the rhythm engenders a risk of clot formation due to stagnant flow, particularly in the left atrial appendage, a “pouch” that extends off of the left upper chamber of the heart. These clots can eject out of the heart and go anywhere into the arterial circulation; however, the most concerning event is embolization into the cerebral circulation, where the clots can cause a stroke. Once we have a patient with known atrial fibrillation, we employ a scoring system to determine whether they should be instituted on anticoagulation (“blood thinners”) to reduce the risk of stroke.

What lifestyle choices can increase your chances of getting atrial fibrillation?

Sedentary lifestyle and obesity, excessive alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco usage, poor diet.

What should people in their 30-40s be doing to reduce their risk of developing atrial fibrillation?

As stated above, the lifestyle choices are “modifiable risk factors”. Weight management and routine exercise change factors in the autonomic nervous system that decrease the risk of atrial fibrillation. A diet low in salt, saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol, as well as limiting alcohol and caffeine intake. No smoking, and this includes vaping. Treat underlying hypertension and high cholesterol.

How does taking a statin affect the chances of getting atrial fibrillation?

There has been some evidence that statins decrease the risk of getting atrial fibrillation. There has been some conflicting evidence over many studies, and whether the positive effect is a direct or indirect effect of

The CDC estimates that as many as 6 million Americans have atrial fibrillation, and this number will double by 2030. There are just under half a million atrial fibrillation hospitalizations per year in the United States. I would say the numbers are increasing, probably for many reasons; the youngest baby boomers are around 60 years old now, and atrial fibrillation risk increases with age, and there’s more awareness about heart disease in general. In terms of atrial fibrillation, there are a number of ways to perform self-monitoring, such as smart watches and devices, hand-held electrocardiogram devices that I think are very useful and I often recommend to patients. I know I am seeing more referrals for atrial fibrillation in my clinic, and I am just a simple interventional cardiologist.

Is there anything locally that is being done that is unique?

You know, we are very blessed to have many capable electrophysiologists in Birmingham, both at the University and in the community hospitals. They are all on the cutting edge of the technological advances in managing atrial fibrillation. I would say these doctors are unique in their practices.

Years ago, many patients were relegated to controlling their rate with antiarrhythmic medications (many of which have deleterious side effects) and using anticoagulation for stroke prevention; however, there has been more of a push to maintain a normal sinus rhythm for these patients, and this often involves a procedure called atrial fibrillation ablation, which is an invasive procedure that employs microwave heat energy to destroy the cells responsible for the atrial fibrillation, thereby promoting a normal rhythm from the body’s intrinsic pacemaker.

Some patients also have problems with bleeding with anticoagulants, and we are fortunate now to have occluder devices that isolate the left atrial appendage where most clots originate that cause stroke in atrial fibrillation. This can allow for patients to eventually come off of their blood thinners.

Atrial fibrillation ablation procedures and left atrial appendage occluder devices are performed by most electrophysiologists and structural interventional cardiologists in every major hospital.

GOOD TASTE GOOD TASTE

Don’t Overthink It.

YOU HAVE ENOUGH GOING ON Life is complicated enough. Picking out a wine shouldn’t be yet another complicated thing. Come see us at The Pig, or email us scott@thepigbham, tell us what you need, and we will get you sorted! With that in mind, here are some “no-brainers” that will make a great meal.

So many folks come in and ask for Sancerre, mainly because it is something familiar to them. What (we think) they really want is some delicious Italian white wine. The Arneis is a remarkably delicious value. It has the crisp minerality many folks seek, but just were not aware they could find in Italy. We were lucky enough to take a wine trip to Italy earlier this year. The revelation we had, along with buyers all across the country was this – folks asl for Sancerre, but they’d really prefer an Italian wine if they tasted them side by side.

BENANTI ETNA ROSSO

Are you planning on eating Italian for dinner? Well, then you should drink Italian as well. There is a reason why Mother Nature put the grapes in the same place as the food. “If it grows together, it goes together.” And this Sicilian red wine is “buono.” Enjoy it with most any Italian fare, from the simplest “paesano” dish to the most elegant culinary creation. It is just a ding-dang good bottle of red wine.

SCHUG CHARDONNAY, SONOMA COAST

Chardonnay is not a dirty word. We grant you that there are some rather unpleasant bottles of Chardonnay out there. Chardonnay is a wine that can get very out of balance, with some aspects overwhelming others. But a good balanced Chardonnay can be delicious. This Schug has a magnificent balance of fruit, cream, minerality, oak, acidity, and intensity.

Don’t take our word for it, just look at the 95 Point review from The Wine Advocate, “I love this easyto-drink 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon from McPrice Myers that well overdelivers for its price. Deep ruby-purple, it has alluring aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, dried herbs, leather and lavender, plus classy touches of oak spice. The full-bodied palate is concentrated and powerful without going over the top. It has abundant, grainy tannins, flinty streaks and plenty of refreshing acidity to carry the long finish. It’s not your average chocolate bomb California Cabernet, despite its modest price tag.” This is even more exciting when we see that our price is $10 less than the reviewer has in mind.

The Pig was recently voted as The Best Place to Buy Wine in Birmingham for the 5th year in row. Our knowledeable staff is happy to help you with any question, and make any suggestion based on your personal tastes and budget.
