For improved nutrition, health (and some delicious fun) incorporate these global ideas into your diet.
FRANCE: Treat Yourself
The French don’t deprive themselves of delicious foods, but they don’t over do it. What’s the secret? Eat smaller portions of foods and sweets that satisfy.
INDIA: Eat Plant Proteins In India, the word ‘dal’ can mean lentils or the traditional thick stew or soup that’s made from them. Dal is a staple of Indian food, and it’s protein rich makeup is a great reason to make it one of yours.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SMILE
For dental health, The American Dental Association recommends the MyPlate guidelines.
Half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C for gum health, and vitamin A for tooth enamel. Both water and fiber keep your mouth moist because it stimulants saliva production, which washes harmful acids away from your teeth.
Proteins protect and rebuild tooth enamel. Look to eat proteins that contain the most phosphorus - lean meat, poultry, fish and eggs.
Focus on whole grains like oatmeal and brown rice. Processed grains are high in sugar, which the bacteria in your mouth feed on lead to tooth decay.
Adults need dairy. It’s high in calcium and other minerals that are beneficial for tooth enamel.
ITALY: Slow Your Pace
When Italians gather around the table they’re in no hurry. Not only does eating slower aid in digestion, meals aren’t just for eating, they’re a reason to connect and relax with friends and family.
GREECE: Eat Healthy Fats
The Mediterranean diet isn’t so much of a diet, but more of a way of life. In Greece, some of the best nutrients are plentiful. One of the cornerstones of a Mediterranean diet are healthy fats like olive oil, fatty fish, avocados and nuts.

#1 What is your home’s architectural style?
Do you live in a modern or traditional style home? Is it Georgian, Colonial, Greek Orthodox, English Tudor, Craftsman, English Cottage, or something else? If you’re unsure, and your architect friend isn’t around, a quick Google search will guide you in the right direction.
#2 Does your current landscape design complement your structure?
Now that you’ve determined the structural style of your home, it’s easier to enhance what you have. Think about size, line, shape, material, and color. Do they complement or clash?
Your landscape design should act as a complement to your home. For instance, a modern landscape design style would suit a contemporary home, while a rustic design with flower beds or hedges would be ideal for a colonial-style home.
The size of your property is also a factor to consider. Smaller properties benefit from minimalist designs that maximize space and promote an open feel. Larger properties can support elaborate luxurious designs.
In regards to line and shape, the continuation and/ or contrast will highlight architectural elements. Color is also important. Some materials stay green all year and complement a white home very well. Blue and purple flowers complement a gray home while white flowers contrast well against a red brick home.
#3 How much maintenance does your landscape design require?
Upkeep obligations vary. It’s important to figure out what works for you. Minimalist options ease your burden and complex traditional designs may require additional maintenance.
Lifestyle and usage needs are essential when choosing landscape design styles. How will you use your outdoor space? For example, a family with children may want a play area while a homeowner who often entertains may want a patio, outdoor kitchen, or pool.
#4 Do you need a landscape designer?
Depending on your budget, existing landscaping, and projected scope of needs; you may want to consider hiring a landscape designer whose education and experience will ensure a seamless process and professional results.

Parenting three young and very active kids, and working full time means my life is super busy. But, integrating a consistent exercise routine with mental wellness practices, it’s possible to create a holistic lifestyle that supports both my body and mind.
I make it a priority to go to the gym five days a week, without exception, focusing on strength training. I work each muscle group twice a week and aim to lift heavy. Variety is key, so I mix up my workouts to keep them fresh and challenging. This not only keeps me physically engaged but helps prevent gym fatigue
But the gym is more than just the place I go to take care of my body—it’s where I can get a mental escape. Exercise releases endorphins, which can reduce stress and elevate my mood.
Another important aspect of my gym time is the opportunity it gives me to model healthy habits for my kids. By demonstrating dedication to my fitness goals, I teach them the value of consistency, self-discipline, and following through on commitments.
BEING ORGANIZED Organizing my gym schedule has a domino effect on the rest of my life. By prioritizing exercise, I am better able to manage my time and reduce stress. Stress is inevitable, but being organized can help reduce its effects. By having a structured plan for my workouts, I’m better equipped to handle the rest of my day with a
I also make it a point to wake up an hour before my kids. This quiet time allows me to focus on myself before the demands of the day. I start with a daily Bible study, which centers my thoughts and calms my mind. This alone time refocuses and calms my mind for the coming chaotic day. In the evenings, I don’t deprive myself. If I want to enjoy a glass of wine to help me relax after a crazy day, I do it. While moderation is key, this small indulgence can help me unwind and decompress. With kids, food can sometimes feel like another source of stress, so I don’t overthink it. I focus on moderation and sensible meals. Having to plan for a family means, I stick to balanced meals that work for everyone.
Teaching art for kids at LifeTime adds an extra layer of fulfillment to my life. By working with children, I’m reminded that life isn’t just about my own goals or schedule. Helping them explore their creativity puts things into perspective and allows me to give back in a meaningful way.
Balancing physical health with mental wellness isn’t just about one aspect of life. It’s about integrating exercise, mindfulness, and meaningful connections to create a more harmonious lifestyle.

HOW
After almost 42 years as a person engaging regularly with other persons, I am still mostly dumb-struck at the flapjawed commentary so often slung about my diets, especially regarding choices that are strictly individually-impactful. I cannot understand the perceived need to offer unsolicited opinion or advice toward a topic that has literally nothing to do with the offerer. As in, “none-ya”.
That being said, it happens. All the time. On the reg. Publicly, privately, here, there, in a box with a fox wearing sox. I’ve come to the conclusion that there is an entire category of lifestyle choices that send you to the fiery frontlines of jaw-flappery - like eating all meat or covering yourself with tattoos, both of which I engage (saving that psycho-analysis for another day). Subscribing to said category is subscribing to flappery, like it or not. Best to just be ready.
The first amendment in our Constitution’s Bill of Rights provides the “freedom of speech”. The second provides “the right to bear arms”. Consider this your arsenal.
1) You cannot change anyone’s mind or opinion. It’s best to remember that from the beginning. You’re powerful, but not like that.
2) Your choice is yours, so own it. Stand firmly in it, and don’t back down. Never let them see you tremble or sweat. Show no signs of weakness.
3) Humor is a great deflector. If the zing is “Could never be me,” you say “Good thing it’s not!” Or if they hit you with “So weird,” come back with “I know right?! I’m weird. It works.”
4) Know your “why.” Sometimes the conversation is less judgment and more curiosity. We like those. Be prepared with a quickie response about why you choose the way you do.
5) If you’re going for TKO, list the benefits you’ve experienced or some quantifiable, scientific, evidentiary study reportage. They’ll never see it coming, especially from a tatted up meathead.

Encore Community Respite provides crucial support to individuals living with memory loss from Alzheimer’s, other forms of dementia, and traumatic head injuries. Equally important, they offer respite for the caregivers—often family members—who dedicate themselves to their loved ones’ care. By giving caregivers a much-needed break, Encore enriches the lives of those experiencing memory loss, while providing their families a moment to recharge.
The prevalence of dementia is on the rise, with family caregiving valued at $5.3 billion in unpaid labor. As the burden on these caregivers grows, so does the need for respite programs like Encore. Many caregivers become so overwhelmed that their health suffers, sometimes leading to premature death before their loved one with memory loss. At Encore, participants experience four hours of engaging, interactive activities, while caregivers get a reprieve. The demand is so high that Encore operates with a waitlist, demonstrating the pressing need for these services.
Encore Community Respite is located in Canterbury Methodist Church and operates largely on donations, making every contribution vital to their ongoing success. The organization maintains its commitment never to turn anyone away based on their ability to pay the nominal daily fee.
Encore Community Respite opened in June 2016, inspired by a similar initiative in Montgomery. The immense need for caregiver respite, combined with the exhaustion many caregivers face, served as their primary motivators. What began with just seven participants two days a week has become a program with 75 participants, operating three days a week. A unique aspect of Encore’s model is that participants do not feel they are attending a “memory care program,” but rather a community space where they stay active and socially engaged. A dedicated group of 130 volunteers makes it all possible, and the organization also offers three support groups each week.
Since its inception, Encore has served around 1,000 families. The program’s positive impact even caught the attention of a New York film crew, who visited recently to create a documentary on respite programs and their life-changing effects on families. Local medical professionals recognize this benefit as well, with UAB Neurology and the Memory Disorders Clinic at UAB regularly referring patients to Encore. In 2022, Encore launched a dementia-friendly choir for participants and others in the community. The choir performs two concerts annually, and the proceeds go to a chosen charity, reinforcing Encore’s belief that every individual—regardless of memory loss—can continue contributing to the community.
Volunteers are also crucial, with over 300 volunteer slots needing to be filled each month. Whether through financial support or by offering your time, every effort helps give caregivers the gift of rest and enriches the lives of those with memory loss.

This is our annual list of the top five best dishes in Birmingham. Do you know of a dish you’d like to see? D.M. us on Instagram, and let us know. The top 5 from last year were: Hot and Hot’s Tomato Salad, Vegetable Chow Nian Fun from Red Pearl, Alle Vongole at La Fresca, Civiche from Dos Hermanos Taco Truck and Ocean’s Baklava Ice Cream.
Campanelle, or cacio pepe, is one of Rome’s signature dishes and served all over the Italian capital. It’s a simple pasta dish that includes a cheese sauce with parmigiano reggiano and black pepper. Luca opened in the past year, and is located in Homewood on 28th Ave South, just down from The Valley hotel.
How could we not include a dish from the best Chinese restaurant in Birmingham? Last year we included their Vegetable Chow Naan Fun. This year we’re going with their Cumin Lamb. Not a fan of lamb? Try the Cumin Beef. Both are spicy and incorporate all the things we love about Chinese food.
Could the best Thai food in town really be located in the former Hoover Foodmart? Yes! In fact, it’s barebones ambiance adds to its charm and authenticity. The menu is minimal to say the least. Choices are limited and change depending on the day, but we’ve never had anything bad here. We chose the Friday special, Yellow Curry. It comes with chicken, potatoes, cherry tomatoes and coconut milk.
Joyland, which has another spot in Nashville, opened recently near Avondale where Rodney Scott’s used to be. Joyland is an imaginative concept from James Beard Award-winning Chef Sean Brock inspired by the original fast-food restaurants of yesteryear. Their crust burger is similar to smash burger with a “fancy sauce,” which gives this burger a nice umami pop.
The winner of this year’s Best Pizza in our annual Reader’s Poll, Davenport’s has been a Birmingham fixture since 1964. The founder, Rex Hollis named the restaurant after his friend, Jim “Peanut” Davenport, who was a professional baseball player with the San Francisco Giants. They grew up together in Siluria, AL and was a well known local name after the Giants were in the World Series the year before.
Adios is the creation of Jesus Mendez and Jose Medina Camacho, who brought their Mexican roots to the Magic City. Inspired by the energy and music of Mexico City, Adios specializes in Tequila and Mezcal. Located downtown on 1st Ave North, it has a cozy and convivial setting with large tropical plants, comfy chairs and Mexican inspired artwork.
Just opened on 2nd Ave North, Sloan’s was started by the people at Bocco, and caters to the bourbon aficionado or anyone who wants to be one. Their bourbon flights are informative, fun and taste great. And their happy hour from 4-6pm includes Old Fashioneds for only $8.
This is our annual list of the top five best bars in Birmingham. Do you know of a bar you’d like to see? D.M. us on Instagram, and let us know. The top 5 from last year were: Juniper, Otey’s, Mayawell, Queen’s Park and Mom’s Basement.
The brain child of The Atomic’s founder, Feizal Valli, House of Found Objects is not just about the drinks, it’s about the experience. There’s plenty of conversation pieces all over the place including a video projection behind the bar, typewriters and Elvis costumes. “The idea of a ‘found object’ is once you remove it from its context, it’s free to be whatever you want it to be,” Valli says. “People can come here and be whatever they want to be. In that sense, they are ‘found objects.”
Located downtown just west of the Barons’ stadium, Tucana just opened about year ago, and was started by one of the founders of Queen’s Park, which closed after Christmas. Like the name says, it’s a Tiki Bar specializing exotic tropical rum drinks. Like Queen’s Park, they take presentation very seriously and feature seasonal drink menus.
Key Circle Commons is not trying to be a wild and raucous joint. It’s style is more elevated and elegant. Located in English Village, and named after a turn-around just up from it’s Cahaba Road address, it’s look and feel are cozy and warm. Key Circle Commons was started by Mauricio Papapietro, whose portfolio includes Brick and Tin restaurants downtown and nearby Mountain Brook Village. The cocktail and small plate menu is seasonal, and follows Alabama’s growing seasons.
Each year, Cherokee Bend Elementary School celebrates the new school year and all of the generous Chief Sponsors with an exciting block party style bash and fun run. To see the rest of the pictures click the code.

What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham is a warm and welcoming city. It is just the right size with plenty of economic opportunity, cultural, and entertainment options without the traffic, hassle, and high cost of living of other metropolitan communities. I grew up in Birmingham, attended BirminghamSouthern College, and returned after attending law school out of state. As such, I have a unique perspective and appreciation for what makes Birmingham special. As a history major, I particularly appreciate Birmingham’s rich history and culture. In addition to the pivotal role Birmingham played in the advancement of civil rights, it is unique among cities in the South for its southern European culture due to the many Italian, Greek and Lebanese families who moved here over the past 120 years. This culture has enriched Birmingham with wonderful festivals, restaurants, beautiful places of worship among other things that make Birmingham wonderfully unique.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is my commitment to reinvesting in my community following my graduation from law school. Returning to Birmingham and serving the community through various civic organizations has always been a goal of mine, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to do so. I am an active member of the Birmingham Bar Association Young Lawyers Section Executive Committee, where I work alongside other young professionals to support and advance the legal community. Additionally, I serve on the Ronald McDonald House Junior Board, contributing to the well-being of families in need of support. My involvement with Camp Winnataska allows me to support and engage with youth, fostering a sense of community and personal growth. These roles have enabled me to give back to the community that has given me so much, and I am dedicated to continuing this work in the future.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
Highlighting and promoting Birmingham’s exceptional qualities and optimal lifestyle for young professionals is essential. Birmingham has always had a successful business community with numerous economic opportunities for young professionals. But over the past ten years, it has enjoyed transformative change with housing and lifestyle options downtown to create an even more vibrant culture for young professionals. Birmingham is a growing, dynamic city and offers a little bit of everything to those who live here, including but not limited to exceptional culinary offerings, outdoor experiences, arts and culture, and genuine Southern hospitality for all. I would invite any young professional to consider Birmingham when planning their future.

What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham is a wonderful city and, in my opinion, is one of the best kept secrets in the south. I’ve lived here my whole life and am proud to call Bham my home. With lots of history, food, sports, and being close to so many beautiful lakes, the beach, Nashville, Atlanta and Nola. Bham is just the right size and location for me. B&B thrives in this city because I thrive in this city. So many gorgeous homes and beautiful old neighborhoods to work in. One of the specialties of B&B is historic home renovation and there’s a nonstop supply of old homes in need of saving.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
I hope Bham keeps growing in the right directions. I hope our leaders keep investing in downtown and continuing to clean up our neighborhoods and keep the city safe from crime. I’ve lived in Eastlake and Mountain Brook and we can all agree we need good schools and safe, clean neighborhoods. Additionally, we can all agree we need to respect and preserve our beautiful old homes and work to restore them to their former greatness. So much character and craftsmanship that you just can’t find today. With new industry, growth and new companies comes new people that need houses…and when that happens, please call B&B and let us help you with your housing needs. Welcome to the HAM!

Professionally, I have had the privilege of learning from some of the best lawyers and economic development leaders in the business, as well as the invaluable opportunity to contribute to projects and initiatives that have had a meaningful impact on the region. What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Beyond its historical significance, Birmingham has evolved into a vibrant cultural hub, where tradition meets progress, and neighborhoods are teeming with creative energy. Outside of the more conspicuous attractions—our awardwinning restaurants, rich history, and thriving arts/entertainment scene—there’s a unique sense of community here that feeds the spirit of the city and the surrounding metro area. This is a place where age is not a barrier to entry; if you are passionate about a topic and come to the table well informed, you have the opportunity to make a tangible impact. I am grateful to live in a city that values fresh ideas and embraces individuals from all backgrounds who are dedicated to bettering the community. Whether your interests lie in entrepreneurship, education, the arts, or community development, Birmingham offers countless ways to get involved, make connections, and contribute meaningfully. It’s a city where you can build not just a career, but a fulfilling life.

Building on Birmingham’s vibrant social scene— through more local festivals, pop-up markets, and unique events—can showcase the city’s culture and energy. It’s been incredibly rewarding to contribute alongside such impactful organizations like The Rotaract Club of Birmingham, Girls Inc. of Central Alabama, the Robert E. Reed Foundation for GI Cancer, and the Birmingham Ballet Guild. I feel fortunate to work for a company that not only supports my professional growth but also encourages my commitment to giving back to the community.
Birmingham is the perfect blend of big-city excitement and warm, hometown charm. It has everything you’d want from a larger city—amazing restaurants, vibrant nightlife, and a packed calendar of events for all ages—while still offering the welcoming hospitality that makes you feel right at home. The food scene is phenomenal, with a mix of local gems and innovative dining experiences. Birmingham’s diversity adds richness to its culture, with something always happening—be it sporting events, historic landmarks, or community gatherings. It’s a place where you can find your passion, connect with others, and never run out of things to do. The community and culture make Birmingham a truly special place you won’t want to leave.

Birmingham already offers many features that attract young professionals, including a growing tech and startup ecosystem, affordable urban living, and a vibrant cultural and outdoor scene. What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham is a dynamic city that continues to grow and innovate, honoring its history without being defined by it. As a healthcare and technology hub with UAB, Southern Research and Innovation Depot, it offers great opportunities for young professionals, families, and entrepreneurs. The city also has a vibrant cultural scene, with institutions like Red Mountain Theatre and the Birmingham Museum of Art, contributing to a thriving arts community. Despite its size, Birmingham retains a small-town feel, with accessible business leaders who are invested in its continued success. The city is also known for its strong philanthropic spirit, with organizations and individuals actively working to improve the community and foster positive change.
I take great pride in the opportunity to serve our community in various leadership capacities throughout my career. These include my role as President and Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham Sunset, Board of Directors for the Mountain Brook Chamber of Commerce and starting the Junior Board, Canterbury UMC Church Council. Additionally, I’ve contributed to Rotary District 6860 in several district-level roles, further enhancing my leadership experience.

Samuel Harris II FOUNDER & MANAGING PARTNER, BLUEWATER WEALTH ADVISORS
What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham is a city that surprises and inspires, blending Southern charm with modern energy. It has a dynamic community and a thriving young professional network, where ambitious entrepreneurs work together to drive change. I strive to lead in this same spirit, with active involvement in The Rotaract Club of Birmingham, which fosters leadership and service, The Phoenix Club of Birmingham, supporting at-risk youth, and The Greater Birmingham Auburn Club Board of Directors, connecting and engaging the Auburn alumni community. Birmingham also boasts a worldclass food scene, offering everything from awardwinning fine dining to classic Southern comfort. Birmingham is a city that fosters connection, innovation, and community spirit.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Successfully launching a 3 person RIA and Family Office, Bluewater Wealth Advisors, crossing $100 million in AUM within the first 120 days. Also extending outside of Birmingham, in addition to launching Bluewater Wealth Advisors, I built a real estate development firm, Stardust Development, focused on developing Harris Farms, a world-class mixed-use master development in Huntsville, AL.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
To attract more young professionals to Birmingham, we need to continue building on the momentum of our thriving start-up and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Innovation Depot plays a crucial role in this, serving as a hub for tech startups and providing the resources and support necessary for companies to grow. Leaders like Miller Girvin and Sanjay Singh are driving innovation and fostering an environment that encourages fresh ideas and bold initiatives. However, Birmingham still trails in public image on the national stage, which means there’s a real opportunity to elevate the city’s profile as a center for entrepreneurship. If we can increase national recognition of the dynamic work being done here, Birmingham will become an even more attractive destination for ambitious young professionals looking to make an impact.

HOAR CONSTRUCTION & HPM, RECRUITING MANAGER
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I started with Hoar Construction as an intern in 2014 and am proud that I have continued my career here for 10 years. In my time with Hoar’s Human Resources Department, my main focus has been on recruiting and retaining top talent to join our company. Since I started here, I have gotten the opportunity to grow an incredible internal Recruiting Department and we have grown from 500 employees to over 830 employees. While I definitely do not claim full responsibility for that achievement, I am incredibly proud that I have been able to contribute to our consistent growth.
What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
I am proud to say I’ve lived in the Birmingham area my entire life, but my career has given me the opportunity to travel around the country. I always feel when I come home that the people in our city are exceptionally friendly and genuinely care about their communities. I have seen so many times people in this city and the neighborhoods within it come together for different causes to help each other out. That is one thing I would want anyone who is considering visiting or living in Birmingham to know.
In addition, I do not think a lot of people who have never been to Birmingham appreciate that we are a culinary destination. Birmingham is home to 7 James Beard Award Winners and countless other delicious local restaurants. I would put our city up against some of the top metropolitans in the country, and I think it’s a fairly unknown, but wonderful feature of Birmingham.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham? One issue that is a challenge for young professionals across the country is high interest rates and finding affordable housing in this economy. I am encouraged to see the recent reduction in the Federal Reserve’s key interest rate, and I hope that it will have a positive impact here in Birmingham. I do think our city is attractive to young professionals because we are home to nationally ranked healthcare, construction, automotive, and other industry-leading companies. Anyone who has spent time here knows we have a lot of great restaurants, concerts, and entertainment. I think Birmingham has a lot going for it, so I’d like to see our city and local businesses continue to thrive and attract new professionals here to see all the great things we have to offer.

By: Scott Atkinson , Wine Manager at PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE
If you want someone to be a good host, be a good guest. And If you want someone to be a good guest, be a good host.” My grandmother shared this priceless Southern axiom with me when I was too young to fully grasp the merits of the wisdom. It is a nugget that I’ve reflected upon many times over the years. Most importantly, I’ve tried to follow her sage advice. In all candor, I don’t always succeed, but I do try.
In the esteemed words of Douglas Adams, “Don’t Panic.” One of the first things we learned in high school algebra is this; the more variables there are, the harder it is to solve the equation. We like to keep it simple, when possible.
The Red – Keep it simple. Pierre Amadieu Cotes-du-Rhone Rouge is the “go to” red wine. It is versatile, great value, very food friendly, and it is a screwcap (more on this later.) Lots of wine for a crowd? Can’t beat it.
The White – Second verse, same as the first. Pierre Amadieu also crafts a Cotes du Rhone Blanc. Just as above, it is versatile, great value, very food friendly, and it is a screwcap.
The Bubbly– Oh boy, now that is a big ol’ basket of strong opinions. (See right column)
But what about Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Sancerre, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio? At the end of the day we will help you select whatever wines you prefer. Just remember it is hard to make sure you have enough of all the different things. Also, recall the notion about algebra… it is hard to figure it all out!
ALTERNATIVE CLOSURES:
Box wines, screwcap wines, and other non-cork closures are ok. There may be some out-dated concerns about the reputation of screwcaps, but they are just that – out-dated. Given the choice, almost all winemakers would prefer screwcaps or (gasp!) boxed wines for wines consumed within a few years of production. So don’t be afraid to check with us on a screwcap or a (gasp!) boxed wine. The Vignes des Lumières Red has absolutely no business being as good as it is for the money. This is a great wine that just happens to come in a box.
Now, the secret: people don’t really care about the wine you pour them at a party. Now, I am not saying that they don’t care about the wine at all, but they don’t really care about it a whole lot. You know what people care about? They care about how you’ve welcomed them into your home. They care about the fact that you care about them. Another secret: you can’t make everyone happy all the time. But, and here’s the key, you can try. With that in mind, here are a few tricks we’ve learned over the years to make your holiday party a delightful shindig.
THE DILEMMA OF BUBBLES AND SUGAR:
The bubbly tends to be used for three main purposes; mixing, such as mimosa, sipping and toasting, and proper celebrations.
1. Mixing: Prosecco is the most popular bubbly for mixing. The concern we often see is that folks are (rightly) concerned with the sugar content. If you are adding orange juice, cranberry juice, etc. you are likely adding something with a decent sugar content. We like to suggest a lower sugar Prosecco, like the Adami
2. Cava is the best option for sipping and toasting. It is also a great option for mixing, as the production method is more like true Champagne. Cava bubbles, like Champagne bubbles, are finer and tighter, as opposed to the frothier style of Prosecco. Castellar Cava is our go-to Cava for the event budget.
3. Champagne. Champagne, Champagne, Champagne. Certain situations merit the real deal. The bigger the occasion, the more necessary the Champagne. Champagne starts “reasonable” and goes to mortgage payment territory quickly. Gosset, for the money, cannot be beat.
Unless you feel very strongly, we advocate cans. The technology for cans has improved greatly over the years. All the local craft breweries use cans now, as it provides a superior product. And just as above, limit your choices. Keep it down to two or three choices and relax!
So, if you’ve read all of this and are still eager to host a holiday party, some down to the Pig and let us assist you! We promise to be more Buddy The Elf, and less The Grinch. Or email us at Scott@ThePigBham.com.
