How Can You Be Healthier in 2025?

> LOOK AT YOUR DIET DIFFERENTLY

Forget setting ridiculous standards, and following a plan your lifestyle will never allow. Just stick to the basic MyPlate guidelines: Half your plate should be fruits and veggies, one-quarter should be protein, and one-quarter grains or starches.

> DRINK MORE WATER

You’ve heard this a million times, but sometimes it’s tough to get it done. But, water affects so much of general wellness. Just start with 60oz a day in two 30oz bottles/containers. Keep it on your desk and in your car. Measuring your water intake is the best way to hold yourself accountable.

> PRAY/MEDITATE

Calming your brain is needed now more than ever. We’re surrounded by stimulation. Too many people say they simply can’t slow down to pray. No one is that busy. We can all set aside 10-15 min in the morning. It will make the chaos of the upcoming day so much more manageable.

> SLEEP

Sleep affects so much. Muscle growth, mental/brain up-keep and overall mode. Just make sure you 7-8 hours a day and you’re good.

> STICK TO YOUR GROCERY LIST

Dave Ramsey said one of the most common budget busters is frequent grocery store visits. You go in planning to only get one or two items, but you walk out with eight. Plan your meals for the week, and get everything you need at one time. (This is also key for sticking to your diet.)

> GET OVER YOURSELF

Our modern lifestyle of social media and digital on-demand, has made us think we’re the center of the universe. We’re not. A great way to stay humble is to serve. Donate just a little time to a charity cause. We’re talking about your time. Your gifts and financial support are always great, but giving your time directly connects you to the cause.

> PRACTICE JOY

What do we mean? Practice micro-acts of happiness. Make a point to do things like noticing the beauty of nature, petting your pets, giving a compliment to a stranger etc. Science shows these small moments greatly add to your over-all well-being.

> LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME

Stop thinking too far ahead. Of course, planning is a key factor to success. But your plans can only be implimented one day at time. Projecting too much thought into the future will almost always lead to stress. Set your goals one day at a time.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING IN 2025

New Downtown Amphitheater

Set to be opened this summer, the new 9,400-capacity outdoor venue will be located in the former Carraway Hospital in North Birmingham. Falling under the BJCC and Uptown Entertainment District umbrella, the new venue looks to host about 20 shows over the Summer months, as well as, host special events. So far Rod Stewart, Matt Rife, Thomas Rhett, and Riley Green are epected to perform over the Summer.

Things to be on the lookout for in 2025.

According to James Clear who writes about habits, decision making, and continuous improvement, these are a few common beliefs people get wrong.

OVER RATED: Unrestricted Freedom

UNDER RATED: Carefully Designed Constraints

Constraints actually increase our skill development rather than restrict it. We need lines to show us where to add color, not a blank canvas to draw on.

OVER RATED: Being Busy

UNDER RATED: Doing One Thing at a Time

Being in motion is not the same thing as taking action. As a society, we have mistaken all activity as an indicator of living a busy and important life.

OVER RATED: Degrees & Credentials

UNDER RATED: Courage & Creativity

Degrees can be important. (I don’t want to be operated on by a surgeon who didn’t attend medical school.) But as someone said, “Most people need degrees because they don’t have the courage to ask for what they want.”

OVER RATED: Watching the News

UNDER RATED: Reading Old Books

Any lasting book must be filled with ideas that stand the test of time. Meanwhile, the news is filled with fleeting, usually inaccurate and misleading information.

OVER RATED: Discovering the “New” Thing UNDER RATED: Mastering the Fundamentals

We fool ourselves into thinking that a new tactic will change the fact that we need to do the work. There really isn’t much of a secret to most things. Want to be stronger? Lift more. Want to learn a new language? Speak the language more.

TIME UNDER TENSION

> Build Strength, Burn More

Strength training is a game-changer for women seeking to improve their body composition. The key lies in time under tension—slowing down your movements to engage muscles more deeply and effectively. It’s not just about torching calories during a workout; it’s about building lean muscle, which boosts your metabolism 24/7. This means your body burns more calories even at rest, whether you’re sleeping, working, or relaxing. By focusing on muscle growth, you’re investing in long-term fat loss and strength.

> Fuel Your Body, Not Just Your Calorie Tracker

A clean, nutrient-dense diet is vital for optimal health and performance. Instead of obsessing over calorie counting, prioritize foods that fuel your body and brain—lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole, unprocessed ingredients. Reduce your intake of processed foods and seed oils, and embrace more animal-based nutrition to ensure your body gets the essential amino acids and nutrients it needs. A well-nourished body performs better, feels better, and supports a sustainable, vibrant lifestyle.

> the Weightlifting Myth for Women

Afraid to lift heavier weights? It’s time to break the myth that heavier weights will make women “bulky.” In fact, incorporating progressive overload—gradually increasing the weight you lift—can help build lean muscle, burn body fat, and create a toned, sculpted look. For best results, choose weights that challenge you to struggle on the last two reps. Lifting heavier builds strength, boosts confidence, and transforms your body in ways cardio alone cannot.

> Protect Your Hormones

Overtraining can lead to stress, inflammation, and burnout. That’s why my programs emphasize the balance between intensity and recovery. Using breathwork and controlled movements, you can stimulate muscle growth while keeping cortisol in check. This approach supports longevity, mobility, and overall well-being, proving that working smarter—not harder—can lead to incredible results for both body and mind.

> KATELYN VINSON is launching her upcoming app, RFRMD by Katelyn, which is designed for home and gym workouts. It blends Pilates-inspired strength training with minimal equipment, making fitness cost-effective and accessible. She’ll include recipes, mobility routines, and challenges, all created with a holistic approach. Katelyn focuses on hormone-consciousness, which is aimed at the nervous system by avoiding excessive cortisol spikes.

JUST A LITTLE LIVING BETTER

When should I replace my kitchen sponge?

Experts say to throw out your kitchen sponge each week. Or put it into the dishwasher once a week. You can also put it in the microwave for about a minute. Kitchen sponges are on the biggest reservoirs of bacteria in your house.

What’s the best way to clean exterior windows?

For windows too tall to reach without a ladder, use a telescoping pole. A telescoping kit that has cleaning heads costs about $100 at a home improvement store. A mixture of dish detergent, vinegar and warm water works best. QUICK TIP: Wash windows on a cloudy day. Direct sunlight can leave streaks.

What’s the best laundry detergent?

Liquids works best. The top liquids are Tide Plus Ultra (28 cents per load) and Persil ProClean (22 cents per load) QUICK TIP: Testing showed that using the liquid detergents to dab a stain works as well, if not better, than spray stain removers.

Is skim milk healthier than whole milk?

For years, dietitians have said skim is better for people looking to lose weight. But, current research says that the fats in milk are not associated with weight gain, type-2 diabetes, heart disease or inflammation.

When should I review my car insurance policy?

Insurance prices hae skyrocketed, if you haven’t noticed. Shopping your policy around every 1-2 years is advisable. And, review anytime (1) you’re driving less, (2) your car is paid off or getting older, (3) your children no longer drive your car, or (4) your assets have changed and you need more protection.

WHAT PEOPLE NOTICE WHEN THEY COME TO YOUR HOME

#1 The Scent

The smell of your home is the first impression that guests have—and it’s instantaneous. Lingering odors from pets, cooking, or mustiness can be off-putting, so aim for a clean, fresh scent by removing potential perpetrators. Opt for natural options like fresh flowers, essential oil diffusers, or candles, but don’t go overboard; overpowering scents can be just as distracting. Regularly cleaning your baseboards can also help keep your home smelling inviting.

#2 The Lawn

Your lawn sets the tone before guests even reach your front door. A well-manicured lawn signals that you take pride in your home’s appearance, while an overgrown or neglected yard can leave a negative impression. Keep the grass trimmed, edges neat, and any leaves or debris cleared away. Adding a few colorful flowers or plants can also make your outdoor space feel more welcoming.

#3 Front Door Fresh

Your front door is a focal point for visitors and often reflects the overall care of your home. Make sure it’s clean, free of scuffs or peeling paint, and, if possible, add a wreath or decoration to make it more inviting. A quick wipe-down of door handles and a clean doormat can also make a big difference. A fresh coat of paint or new hardware are other easy ways to upgrade

#4 Light Bulb Consistency

The type and tone of light bulbs in your home can impact how cohesive and inviting the space feels. Mismatched lighting—mixing warm, yellow light with bright white light for example—can be distracting and make rooms feel disjointed. Stick to one temperature throughout your space for a polished, harmonious look. Replacing burnt-out bulbs promptly is also vitally important.

#5 Windows & Light Fixtures

Dirty windows or dusty light fixtures can unintentionally signal a lack of cleanliness of the home. Clean windows let in natural light, making your home feel brighter and more open. Dust and clean your light fixtures to ensure they are clean and complement the cleanliness of your space. Even if you don’t notice these details daily, guests will, so it is important to be mindful.

#6 State of Cobwebs

Small cobwebs—particularly around ceilings, porches, and outdoor light fixtures—can also leave a negative impression of the state of your home’s cleanliness. Regularly give attention to these areas and sweep away any webs you see to keep things tidy. For harder-to-reach spots, use a long-handled duster or a broom to solve the problem. Staying on top of this small task can make your home feel much more inviting.

Charity Spotlight

Mike Slive Foundation

A mission to fund cutting-edge prostate cancer research.

Who They Support

The Mike Slive Foundation empowers men and their families to confront prostate cancer head-on. The organization focuses on education about the importance of early detection while funding innovative research to improve treatments and uncover a cure for this disease.

The Challenge

Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men—the same rate as breast cancer in women. However, the risks are even greater for African American men, who are twice as likely to be diagnosed with and die from the disease. Family history also plays a significant role: men with a direct relative diagnosed with prostate cancer face double the risk. Early detection is crucial, and prostate cancer is one of the few cancers that can be screened through a simple PSA blood test. The Mike Slive Foundation works tirelessly to educate men and their families about understanding a man’s risk for prostate cancer and knowing when it is time to begin regular screenings.

Inspiration

The Mike Slive Foundation is a national leader in the fight to eradicate prostate cancer through public awareness and research funding in memory of Mike Slive, former SEC Commissioner, and a transformative leader whose vision and direction revolutionized college sports. Commissioner Slive and local attorney Ed Meyerson co-founded the Mike Slive Foundation in hopes that through research and education, we will not lose any more fathers, brothers, uncles, cousins, partners, and friends to prostate cancer.

Achievement

The Mike Slive Foundation, while relatively young, in only its seventh year, has already achieved remarkable progress. To date, it has funded 33 prostate cancer research grants and raised over $4.5 million to help eradicate prostate cancer. The foundation has also developed local and national programming to educate men about the importance of early detection, as well as provided free PSA blood test screening at sporting and other community events.

How You Can Help

There are a few primary ways to support the Mike Slive Foundation: Donate: Make a contribution at MikeSliveFoundation.org/Give-Today. Attend the Blue Shoe Ball: Join the foundation each year at their annual Blue Shoe Ball which features auctions and more.

Request the Prostate Cancer License Plate Tag: For just $50, you can support the foundation while raising awareness on the road. Of the cost, $41.25 goes directly to the foundation. Tags can be requested anytime, meaning you do not need to wait until your tag renews.

50 YEARS OF QUALITY

GOOD TASTE GOOD TASTE

The Unexpected

“You must have a great job. You just get to sit around and taste wine all day!”

Well, yes and no. Selling wine at The Pig is a great job. And yes, there are some days when we do get to taste a fair amount of wine. But, and here’s the weird thing, not all of the wine we taste is good. Crazy, I know, but it is true. Think about it, do you enjoy all the wines you taste? Likely not. There are many reasons, which we won’t digress into here. Instead, we will focus on the wines from the last year or so which were unexpected delights. These are the wines that, when we tasted them for the first time, we were reminded that the job can be pretty great.

GAROFOLI VERDICCHIO DI MATELICA, SUPÈRA

So… Verdicchio. Ever heard of it?

Most folks haven’t. But, then again, there was a time not long ago when nobody knew what a Sancerre was. If there were a tightrope one could walk from the best Sancerre to the prettiest white Burgundies, it would be metaphorically strung over these vineyards. Situated over 1,300 feet above sea level, right as the mountains begin to dramatically soar above the valley below, these vines offer a contemplative and harmonious experience. While soft-textured, there is still a tension the connects the hints of salinity, white flowers, citrus essences, and tropical undertones all over a mineral heart. This is what a Sancerre drinker is really looking for, they just don’t know it yet.

Food Pairing – This would be a stunning compliment to Scampi. It loves shrimp, and it ain’t afraid of garlic.

THREE OTTERS PINOT NOIR

We look to other places, but the Willamette Valley of Oregon keeps our gaze the best. Pinot Noir is known as “the heartbreak grape.” Everyone wants to make a good one, but it is the most fickle and capricious of grapes. Taming the wild streak and getting Mother Nature to play nice is the challenge. To do that with Pinot Noir and stay under $30 in Oregon, that ain’t easy. But Three Otters sure makes it look easy. This has the bright strawberry and raspberry you seek, but it is by no means simple and fruity. This bottle shows why winemakers always want to play with Pinot Noir, because when you get it right, you get it right.

Food Pairing – Check out some of the good Faroe Island or Ora King, from New Zealand salmon. Just do a simple pan sear after a dry brine, serve with Three Otters, and you’ll be happier than an otter with a salmon.

YANTRA

The name Yantra (yawn-tra) is Sanskrit for “instrument” or “machine.” A Yantra is mandala – a map, chart or geometric pattern which is often used to reference geometrical drawings used in the Indian mystical tradition. Made by the incredible Italian team at Tenuta Sette Cieli, this Tuscan wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Folks always come to us and ask for Cabernet Sauvignon, but this concoction is much greater than the sum of its parts, and has been a huge favorite for most anyone who has given it a try

Food Pairing – Treat yourself to a classic. Get a New York Strip and make Steak au Poivre. The Bordeaux style blend with a perfectly executed Steak au Poivre will turn your Saturday night from good to great.

Of course there are many more, but what we would prefer is to learn what you like. Come on down to the Pig and let us ask you a few questions to help figure out what the best wines would be for you. Not what we like, but what you would most enjoy. Heck, isnt’t that the whole point anyways?

The Pig was voted as The Best Place to Buy Wine in Birmingham for the 6th year in row. Our knowledgeable staff is happy to help you with any question, and make any suggestion based on your personal tastes and budget.
