HYDRO FLASK 26 L ESCAPE TOTE
$180
This was our favorite and most practical and most versatile. First, its ice retention was comparable to the soft Yeti’s, but much less bulky, and much easier to throw on your shoulder for transport. It’s also super light. Our reviewer loved the TRU®Zip zipper compared to the soft Yeti’s, which occasionally needs a lubricant. It was also great when you needed to fit wine bottles. And coming in at a modest $180 was nice.
Best for Being Active
CEMULE CLASSIC COLLAPSIBLE SLING STRAP
$65-$140
We found this cooler to be best suited for an active day on the water like kayaking, paddle boarding, etc. And it floats. Its unique design works like a stuff sack for camping. It’s super light and flexible, but won’t hold ice nearly as well as a traditionally built cooler when exposed to continuous heat.
YETI TUNDRA 65
$375
Nothing holds ice and is as durable as the Yeti. Our’s spent all day in the hot summer sun in Perdido and it stayed super cold all day, and was plenty durable to act as a bench to sit on. We found the 65, which easily holds 50 cans plus ice, the perfect size for 6-8 people.
YETI HOPPER M20 BACKPACK SOFT COOLER
$325
Like all Yetis, it holds ice well and is super durable. But our favorite feature was the magnetic opening which makes it super easy to quickly grab a beer. Being a backpack, it was great for the times when there was a moderate walk to the beach.
RTIC 52 QT ULTRA-LIGHT WHEELED COOLER
$240
The RTIC comes in less expensive and lighter than the comparable Yeti version, and holds ice comparably well. We almost always prefer a cooler with wheels, than one without them. While the wheels may take up more storage space, it just makes even the smallest transports easier.
Try cooling down with one of these delicious drinks.

BY: MAGGIE BEASLEY
I’m not about chasing every trend or forcing outfits that don’t feel natural. I love bold jewelry. I’m happiest in a great pair of jeans, a flattering top, a pop of gold, and a fun shoe that ties it all together. That’s my formulaand I believe everyone deserves to find theirs.
Wearing vs. Styling: Why It Matters
Anyone can throw on clothes. Styling is what makes them yours. You can wear a plain tank and denim. Or you can style it - with statement earrings, layered necklaces, cool sunglasses, and a pulled-back bun. The difference? Intention. Styling isn’t about having more, it’s about doing more with what you have. Here are my styling rules that make life easier.
• Monochrome = Instant Chic
Wearing one color head-to-toe always looks puttogether, and it’s the easiest way to feel styled in 30 seconds.
• Find Your Formula
My go-to combo: good jeans + flattering top + a fun shoe + gold jewelry. Figure out what makes you feel good and repeat it with confidence.
• Bold Accessories Are Game-Changers
Don’t underestimate the power of statement earrings, a sleek shoulder bag, or a cool pair of sunglasses. These finish a look - even when you’re just wearing basics.
• Match the Mood - Then Elevate It
Style can reflect how you feel or alter it. If I’m feeling strong, I’ll go for clean lines, structured jeans, and bold accessories that make me feel grounded and pulled together. If I want to feel softer or more chill, I’ll reach for oversized denim, a cozy top, and something relaxed like simple hoops. Your outfit doesn’t have to fake a mood - it can support it. And sometimes, just putting on a fun shoe or your favorite gold earrings is enough to shift your energy.
• Balance Proportions Like a Pro
Oversized top? Pair it with fitted bottoms. Baggy pants? Go with a cropped or tucked-in top. This one styling trick pulls everything together.
• Repeat Your Favorites. Loudly.
Wearing the same outfit again isn’t boring, it’s iconic. Confidence makes a repeat feel brand new.
• Use Pinterest with Purpose
Save outfits that feel like you, not just what’s trending. Recreate the vibe with pieces you already own.
• Don’t Overdo Trends
Love a current trend? Add one or two into your outfit, but don’t feel pressure to wear them all. Style isn’t about proving anything - it’s about feeling like yourself.
• Notice What Flatters You - Then Repeat It
You don’t need to follow a strict list of fashion rules, but understanding your body type can be a helpful starting point. Pay attention to what makes you feel confident—maybe it’s high-rise jeans that hug just right, a wrap top that highlights your waist, or wide-leg pants that make you feel tall and powerful. Once you know what works for you, styling gets way easier and way more fun.
Because when you style instead of just wear, you show up differently. And you deserve to feel that every day.
Pre-made smoothies are convenient but usually packed with extra calories and sugars. Be on the look out for ingredients like agave. It’s a
Smoothies are an easy way to catch up on your daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Loading up on leafy greens can be sweetened by adding fresh fruit.
Things like bee pollen, guarana, green tea powder, and conjugated linoleic acid found in smoothie shops, gyms and stores may sound healthy, but have little proven benefits. This also includes added vitamins and minerals. The fruits and veggies alone provide an adequate amount of nutrition.
You can get it by adding avocados, bananas, low-fat yogurt, and nut butters. Frozen fruit also adds a satisfying
In addition to avocados and nut butters, you can also add chia seeds and flaxseeds which are healthy fats. These seeds are also great for heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and contain protein, fiber and vitamins. All of which helps regulate your energy levels.
The event is simple: let’s get young professionals, leaders, and service-minded individuals together for a cross-organization happy hour—with no agenda, no pressure, and no underlying pitch. Downtown, 1931 Second Ave. North, across the street from Paramount.
Salud, which means “cheers” or “to your good health” is the offspring of Jesús Méndez and his business partner, José Medina Camacho, who teamed up to open the award-winning cocktail bar Adiõs, also downtown. The menu, Méndez says, is inspired by the family meals he remembers from his childhood in Tabasco in Southwest Mexico. The taqueria pays tribute to his father, Jesús Méndez Sr., and stepmother, Christina Tellez, who are also involved as chefs and co-owners. Salud features handmade corn and flour tacos which include a choice of four proteins – carne asada (beef), pollo asada (chicken), suadero (brisket), al pastor (pork) – as well as one vegetarian option, nopal (cactus). The owners have sourced everything locally, predominately from Mi Pueblo and Gordo’s.
We loved the shot plus a beer, but the beer had to be a Tecate Lite, so we started with a Frozen Margarita and a Seasonal Margarita ($11). Both were good, but felt a bit short-changed by the Seasonal’s quantity. The frozen was the way to go. Along with the drinks, we ordered Guacamole ($10). The chips arrived in a plastic bag with the Guac in a disposable cup with a top. (We didn’t order it to go.) It was ‘meh’. For dinner we had the Sonora Taco with Pork ($10), a Carne Asada Taco ($5), and Beef Brisket Taco ($5). The Sonora came on a cheese crust topped with pinto beans. The tacos were served undressed with only the protein. The tortillas were great, and you can notice the homemade taste. There’s a great salsa bar with 3 different salsas, onions, peppers, cilantro and limes, so you top the tacos as you like. Admittedly, we didn’t order enough food. Our bill with tip was $80.
The staff couldn’t be nicer. But you order at the counter, which always brings it down a notch.
Indoor and outdoor seating with an urban hip feel. Arriving on Thursday at 6:45pm, we sat outside, as there were plenty of seats available. We could see this as a great place to enjoy happy hour when the weather’s good. There were several homeless people drifting around, with one trying to come inside. (It’d be nice if the city would finally curb the post-covid homeless explosion, especially if they want more OTMers to spend money downtown. But that’s a different article.) This pocket of downtown also features Paramount, Helen, Bayonet, Cafe Dupont, Golden Age Wine Garden, Bistro Two-Eighteen, and the soon to open Johin’na, so this is a small area with a lot of options. Our server told us they’re open late on the weekends, so it turns into a fun scene as the local service industry converge to meet for a late night drink.
None. If you don’t Uber or live in the area, you’ll have to get lucky on the street or park in pay lot. However, two restaurants nearby do have valet, if you want to try that, which is what we did.
Fantastic tacos, great for lunch, good food if you’re looking for a casual bite downtown, and already in the area. If not, it’s tough to jusify dealing with downtown.

Botox is a muscle relaxer that temporarily softens targeted facial muscles by blocking the nerve signals that cause them to contract. As the treated muscles relax, the lines and wrinkles they create begin to fade—leaving your skin looking smoother and more refreshed.
Neuromodulator injections are the #1 non-surgical cosmetic treatment in North America, and at Gunn Dermatology, we offer the full lineup: Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin, and Daxxify.
3 2 1
Hydrafacial is a luxurious treatment that feels amazing and leaves the skin refreshed and glowing. The treatment deeply cleanses by removing impurities with a vortex motion. We can extract acne spots and blemishes during the treatment.
The latest Hydrafacial technology will infuse the skin with antioxidants and moisturizers to soothe and refresh immediately. It is great for acne, melasma, rosacea, or dull skin.
In 2023 & 2024, Gunn Dermatology was placed in the top 100 providers in North America for Hydrafacial. We deliver thousands of Hydrafacial treatments to our patients and, with each one, pass on a glowing boost in confidence!
The Vivacè Ultra device is what Dr. Gunn likes to call the “goldilocks of radiofrequency microneedling.” This is our go-to skin tightening treatment to stimulate the natural production of collagen and it is shown to be effective in alleviating facial wrinkles, fine lines, and tightening and toning the face and neck as well as contouring the jawline.
This treatment has minimal to no downtime and we typically recommend starting with a series of 3 treatments for best results. It can be done on the face, neck, décolletage as well as on the abdomen, arms, hands, knees etc.
Ellacor is a popular non-surgical option that uses hollow needles to remove micro-cores of skin, resulting in an improved appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles in the mid to lower face without evidence of scarring. Ellacor is the first device to actually remove skin on the microscale! Pro-tip: combine Ellacor with Ablative Resurfacing and a Liquid Phenol Bleph for the ultimate skin rejuvenation. There is some downtime with this treatment but the results are absolutely worth it!

Birmingham Metro Area (6 counties- Jefferson, Shelby, Tuscaloosa, Blount, Walker and St. Clair) Middle School and High School girls’ golf programs by offering grants to either start or help maintain a current program. In addition, they offer a $16,000 annual scholarship to a local high school senior female that plans to attend college in the state of Alabama, has excellent grades, community service, an interest in golf and financial need.
The Challenge
Many schools have had a hard time funding their golf team’s uniforms, so Lady Legacy stepped in to meet their needs. Recognizing the many benefits that golf (and sports) play in the development of young people, such as teamwork, pride, discipline and friendship, their mission was to ensure these athletic endeavors were not cut.
Jamelle Shaw organized the Lady Legacy Metro Championship to raise money for the women’s golf team uniforms. Seeing the success of the tournament, she asked two well known local golfers to assist her in expanding the tournament to benefit junior golfers in our area. Realizing that the women golfers in area play groups were getting older, they wanted to pass along the love of the game to a new generation. Therefore, The Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation was organized in 1999 to encourage young women to take up the game of golf by offering some college scholarship dollars as an incentive.
The first scholarship in 1995 was for $500. Since that time, the annual scholarship has steadily increased to $16,000 – which is given $4,000 per year for 4 years. To date, 27 local women have received $329,850 in scholarship commitments. In 2002, realizing that local high school and middle school girls’ golf teams needed funds to help start or maintain their programs, the first grant was offered for $100. This year, 2025, the LLSF awarded grants of $750 each to 15 area middle school and high school girls’ golf teams – totaling $11,250 for the year. To date – the foundation has awarded $155,674 in grants to 43 local golf programs.
They ask anyone that has benefited from the game of golf in life and business to consider a sponsorship or donation. This will help them encourage the next generation to enjoy and benefit from the sport that has enriched so many lives.
Sponsorship opportunities range from $50 up. Please go to the web site www.LBGALadyLegacy.org to learn more about the foundation and how you can help support these young women golfers in our area.
Please remind local girls golf teams to apply for the grants in the Fall of each year and local senior female golfers to apply for the scholarship in early 2026. All donations are sincerely appreciated.

The films on this list are 10 of my favorites and include some of the best movies ever made — mostly from the golden age of the Hollywood studio system, but I did try to restrain myself and pick at least a few titles made after World War II. If you haven’t seen these titles and you consider yourself a cineaste, run, don’t walk, to check them out.
(2002) Paul Thomas Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson’s deliriously delightful rom-com stars Adam Sandler as a maladjusted plunger salesman who starts a tentative, awkward relationship with lovely Emily Watson. Can he truly overcome his past pain and violent eruptive tendencies to make this unlikely romance work? The slightly surreal tone and dark comedy give the film a woozy weirdness that captures the bluntforce trauma of love itself.
(1987) James L. Brooks
Ultimate career gal Holly Hunter finds herself torn between two suitors at her television news job: the handsome but vacuous new anchor (William Hurt) and a neurotic reporter (Albert Brooks). Featuring whipsmart dialogue and brilliant performances from all three leads, Broadcast News might not be the first romcom you think of from the ’80s — but I might argue it belongs near the very top of the list.
(1971) Hal Ashby
One of cinema’s most memorable mismatched couples, this quirky and deeply moving romcom follows a death-obsessed young man (Bud Cort) and a vivacious elderly woman (Ruth Gordon) who start a life-changing friendship that blossoms into something neither of them expect. Suffused with anti-establishment themes all set to a beautiful soundtrack of songs by Cat Stevens, Harold and Maude is ground zero for a certain darkly whimsical romanticism we still see all over contemporary cinema.
Billy Wilder
Hapless schlemiel C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) tries to make a name for himself at his New York insurance agency by renting out his apartment to his company’s executives — a perfect place for the higher-ups to meet their girlfriends behind their wives’ backs. Complicating matters: Baxter discovers that his boss’s mistress (Shirley MacLaine) is the melancholy elevator girl he is in love with. Caustic and moving, The Apartment is one of Billy Wilder’s best comedies from a career filled with greats.
William Wyler
A princess suffering from the pressures of her position takes off one night in Rome, hoping to see the city. Happenstance places her in the company of an American journalist, who accompanies her on her tour of Rome’s great landmarks and falls in love along the way. This is, of course, the breakthrough role for one of cinema’s most luminous stars. It was the great Audrey Hepburn’s first appearance in an American film — and it won her an Academy Award.
5. THE LADY EVE (1941) Preston Sturges
“I need him like the axe needs the turkey,” says con artist Barbara Stanwyck as she targets Henry Fonda’s wealthy but naïve herpetologist in this sparkling, seductive rom-com that turns an ocean cruise into the setting for a battle of the sexes. Preston Sturges, one of the best screenwriters of classic Hollywood, packs debatably his best film with one hilarious scene after another and a few genuinely sexy moments (by Production Code standards, anyway).
4.
Ernst Lubitsch was known for his continental, classy rom-coms, the best of which is this comedy about a stone-faced Soviet functionary played by Greta Garbo, whose armor begins to crumble during a trip to Paris and the courtship of a charming count (Melvyn Douglas). So unexpected was the casting of the usually quite solemn Garbo in such an effervescent role that the film’s advertising blared on the poster: “Garbo laughs!” You will, too.
3. BRINGING UP BABY (1938) Howard Hawks
Cary Grant was seldom better than when he was brutally humiliated on screen. Maybe that’s why his role in Bringing Up Baby is among his best. Grant is a nervous paleontologist who meets an absolute hurricane of a dizzy high-society dame, played with boundless manic energy by the great Katharine Hepburn, who subjects him to one screwball disaster after another over the course of a long weekend.
2.
The hysterically funny
The Awful Truth is one of the best rom-coms from the golden age of Hollywood, starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne as a married couple whose mutual suspicions lead them to hastily divorce. The trouble is, they just can’t seem to stay out of each other’s lives. Grant and Dunne are splendid sparring partners, as adept with witty repartee as with broad physical comedy.
The gold standard of romantic comedies is Frank Capra’s Oscar-winning classic, pairing Claudette Colbert as a pampered heiress and Clark Gable as a cynical reporter on an eventful trip from Florida to New York. She’s on the run from her millionaire father after eloping with a pilot — a national scandal. And he’s looking to get the exclusive story straight from the source. Naturally, sparks begin to fly.
Let’s start with what makes it a rom-com. There are lots of movies with romance and comedy- Coming to America, 40 Year Old Virgin, etc. But they don’t fit our definition. We think it needs to be evenly balanced between romance and comedy, and be light-hearted without too much content that would need to be edited for a younger audience. We updated our list a bit from our friends at Sidewalk with all modern selections. So without further ado, here’s our list of the best rom-coms.
10. LOVE ACTUALLY (2003) Richard Curtis
A Christmas themed rom-com, with a massive ensemble cast, you can almost always catch it on TV during the holiday season. Indirectly intertwined, we follow 9 sets of characters in London as they deal with the ups and downs of relationships. (One being a hilarious and tender story of friendship.)
9. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (2002) Joel Zwick
As much about cultural identity as romance and comedy, My Big Fat Greek Wedding follows 30-year-old “Toula” as she falls for a ‘non-Greek’ as her large, loud and way too overbearing family hilariously interject into her business. A surprise monster hit, it grossed over $370 million on a $5 million budget.
8. HIGH FIDELITY (2000) Stephen Frears
Rob (John Cusack) is a record store owner in Chicago, who knows music, but perpetually struggles with women. The movie opens with a break-up and unfolds as he learns what love is. Most of the comedy comes from his hilarious goof-ball employees. Perfectly cast with Jack Black and Todd Louiso.
7. MOONSTRUCK (1987) Norman Jewison
Deliberately over-the-top in it’s acting, Moonstruck seems to be mimicking an Italian opera with high emotions, overpowering passions, pain, tragedy and the magic of the moon. Just one of it’s tributes to Italian culture. Cher won a Best Actress in this highly acclaimed romantic comedy.
6. BRIDGET JONES DIARY (2001) Sharon Maguire Renee Zellwegger is an early 30’s Brit who is struggling with her weight and her love life. It’s her imperfections that make her so charming and the movie so funny. Caught between a good guy and bad guy, she finally ends up with someone who loves her, “just as she is”.
3. AMÉLIE (2001) Jean-Pierre Jeunet
This French film is the story of an imaginative, withdrawn girl who decides to covertly make the the people around her happy, and along the way falls in love. As sweet and tender as a movie can be, it’s also hilarious as she enacts her schemes. One of the biggest international hits in French film, it’s amazing warmth is universal.
2. SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE (1993) Nora Ephron
5. CLUELESS (1995) Amy Heckerling
If you know the 90’s, you know this clever comedy captured it perfectly. This coming of age classic was inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma. Director Amy Heckerling took the England of 1800’s into the Beverly Hills of 1990’s and made a rom-com that’s incredibly insightful and super sweet.
The most important component of the romcom is, without a doubt, the chemistry between it’s two leads. Few partners on screen have had as much as Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. The romance is set up with someone falling for a stranger and on the phone. From there we see the hilarious pursuit. The most romantic moment comes at the very end when they finally meet and don’t even say a word, as they simply look into each other’s eyes.
4. WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989) Rob Reiner
“Can men and women ever just be friends?” is the theme that carries through the film as it tracks two people over a twelve year span. We’re introduced to them as not liking each other, then becoming friends, to finally falling in love. This was the movie that set Meg Ryan’s trajectory as being the queen of the modern rom-com.
There’s a tad element of seriousness to this comedy with themes of psychoanalysis and Jewish identity, but it all works for fun in this landmark classic that many critics consider one of the greatest movies ever. It was Annie Hall that Woody Allen moved away from his farcical works and into his unique approach to comedy, and gave us a completely different way to present a rom-com.
By: Scott Atkinson , Wine Manager at PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE
I am acutely aware of my good fortune. One of the coolest things this job affords is the opportunity to visit wineries and wine-making regions all over the world. In the <redacted> years that I have been in the wine industry I’ve had the privilege to visit wineries all over the world. Not just California and Oregon, but South Africa, Spain, Italy, France, New Zealand, Portugal, and more. It is fascinating to see how folks do the same thing, make wine, but do it so differently depending on their circumstances.
Last month I spent a week traveling in Portugal visiting the wineries of Esporão. It was the most impressive, in so many ways, wine visit of my professional career. Their philosophy of wine, business, and well… everything was remarkable and fantastic. I’d encourage you to keep reading, in their words, more of their doctrine:
Everywhere, nature inspires us and helps us to improve. We respect and protect it, building a more promising future. We believe that companies should serve society, and not the other way around. We aim to always operate in a responsible fashion. This responsibility is neither abstract nor merely collective: it is individual, including everyone who is involved with Esporão. We encourage nonconformity, change and creativity, seeking to do better but not necessarily more. We have learnt that progress depends on the knowledge we develop and apply, as well as believing in what we do and putting our heart and soul into it.
TO MAKE THE FINEST PRODUCTS FROM WHAT NATURE PROVIDES. We looked for a word that would sum up our mission. Pen in hand, one by one, we thought of the answer. The result was not just one word, but several ways of feeling and being part of this journey which, together, make Esporão what it is today - a family business made up of genuine people who believe in the commitment they have made.
To be a family company that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, capable of providing unique products and experiences that improve people’s lives.
We want a better world with opportunities and dreams to pursue. We are bold regarding what we propose to do, believing that the effort and persistence to achieve this will help us find new ways forward. We take risks, allowing room for mistakes and the chance to learn from them. Ideas should come from everyone, anywhere, and at any time. We create the organizational climate and structure that allows challenges to become opportunities.
We only exist if part of society, in the environment that surrounds us and within a viable economic context. We take individual and collective responsibility for the impact of our company and work to minimize it. We communicate in an honest and objective fashion.
First, we do better, then we do more. We do not accept “perfection is the enemy of good.” Criticism should be constructive and should be viewed as such. It is our customers and consumers who judge us and we are proactive in asking them, answering with improvements.
So, all if this is great in theory. But, and that is a big but, it is immaterial if the wines aren’t good. The wines aren’t only good, they are great – and great values. Come by and ask us about the wines shown here, as well as more options to come!
