How to Break Your Sweet Tooth

You can control your sweet tooth, and lessen your desire for sweets.

Step One: Know How Much You Eat

Think about the treats you casually consume during the day. Do you have something sweet for breakfast? Do you grab an afternoon snack, or have a small dessert after dinner? You may consume them in small doses, but they add up.

Step Two: Notice How Sweet Your Food Tastes

Many foods – even savory ones like bread – contain added sugars. That’s a problem because it trains your taste buds. As you cut back, you’ll notice how things taste ‘too sweet’, and things that you didn’t think of as sweet, like carrots have a pleasantly sweet taste. As you become aware of the sweetness in your foods, your preferences will begin to shift.

Step Three: Adjust Your Recipes

When you’re baking, for example, reduce the sugar by 10%. And then from there, try reducing it by 25%. Do you sweeten your coffee? Reduce your intake by 10-20% and this will adjust your sweet tooth.

7 WAYS TO

Step Four: Read Food Labels

You might not be surprised by how much sugar is in M&Ms or a cola, but do you know how much sugar is in ketchup, bar-b-q sauce or a protein bar. You may be surprised how much sugar is in food items that aren’t ‘sweet’. Start checking out the labels to educate yourself, and move away from the foods with the added sugars.

Step Five: Add Your Own Sweetness

Do you like sweet tea? Order unsweetened and add your own sugar. Make it sweet, but not as sweet. Buy unsweetened cereal and oatmeal and add your own sugar. From there, slowly reduce the amount you add and your taste buds will adjust.

NATURALLY BRIGHTEN

1. Chamomile Tea Rinse

Brew a strong tea and let it cool before applying it as a rinse after shampooing. For best results, wrap your hair in a towel and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing out.

2. Honey and Cinnamon Mask

Combine honey and cinnamon with a bit of conditioner to create a nourishing mask. Honey contains peroxide properties, while cinnamon boosts its effects. Apply the mask to damp hair, leave it on for a few hours (or overnight), and rinse thoroughly.

YOUR HAIR FOR SPRING

3. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Apple cider vinegar not only clarifies your scalp but can also help subtly lighten your hair over time. Mix one part vinegar with one part water and rinse your hair after shampooing. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing out.

4. Baking Soda Paste

Mix baking soda with water to create a paste, then apply it to damp hair. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and rinse. This method works best for removing buildup, which can make hair look dull and darker.

Lemon juice is a classic natural lightener. Dilute fresh lemon juice with water and spritz it onto your hair. Unlike in summer, you can let it work its magic indoors; just use a hairdryer to add a touch of warmth.

6. Sea Salt Spray

Create a sea salt spray using salt and warm water. Spray it onto damp hair, scrunch, and let it air dry. The salt mimics the effect of beachy, sun-kissed highlights—even in winter.

TIPS ON TURNING 40

Turning 40 is an opportunity to step into a healthier, stronger, and more confident version of yourself. However, as your body changes, the strategies that worked in your 20s and 30s may no longer be as effective. By making intentional adjustments to your health and wellness routine, you can continue to feel your best in this new chapter of life.

1. Check Your Hormones

It’s easy to blame fatigue, brain fog, or weight gain on getting older, but sometimes, it’s just a matter of your body needing a little support. Getting your hormones and cortisol levels checked can give you real insight into what’s going on internally and what adjustments might help you feel your best. Not all clinics are created equal, so do your research—look for a place that takes a thorough, holistic approach rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.

2. Consult a Nutritionist or Dietitian

By 40, you probably already know that fad diets and quick fixes don’t cut it. What works for one person may not work for another, which is why getting professional guidance can be a game-changer. A qualified nutritionist or dietitian can help fine-tune your diet in a way that supports your energy, metabolism, and overall health—without the stress of trying to figure it out on your own.

3. Strength Train

Muscle mass naturally declines with age, but strength training helps counteract that while improving bone density, metabolism, and overall function. And no, you don’t have to lift heavy or spend hours in the gym—just find a routine that feels good and stick with it. Your future self will thank you.

4. Find What You Enjoy

There’s no “perfect” workout routine, diet, or schedule— only what fits into your life and keeps you coming back. Maybe that’s early morning walks, a group dance or barre class, or a mix of pilates and weightlifting. The key is finding something sustainable for you. Make choices that support your goals but don’t make you miserable in the process. Balance is everything.

4. Give Yourself Some Grace

Many of us struggle with the “all-or-nothing” approach. I often have to remind myself not only does it not need to be that way, it simply can’t. As a busy mom of twins involved in competitive sports, there has to be flexibility and lots of grace on late nights and long weekends. If I know dinner will have to happen at the ballpark, I plan ahead or find the best protein option I can and move on. Similarly, if I’m going to one of my favorite restaurants with friends, I will make “splurges” that are worth it for me personally and try not to let guilt get in the way or derail my daily habits the next meal. Embrace your season of life and remember…everything in moderation.

Are there foods that can lift your mood?

When should I replace my kitchen sponge?

Yes! “We know that the good bacteria in your gut produces a lot of neurotransmitters implicated in mood, like norepinephrine and gamma-aminobutyric (GABA),” says Dr. Drew at Columbia University.

Experts say to throw out your kitchen sponge each week. Or put it into the dishwasher once a week. You can also put it in the microwave for about a minute. Kitchen sponges are on the biggest reservoirs of bacteria in your house.

What’s the best way to clean exterior windows?

The mood-related hormone serotonin is usually thought of as a brain chemical, but more than 90% is made in your GI tract.

There’s no guarantee that specific foods will make you healthier, but experts have several suggestions.

Start Small

For windows too tall to reach without a ladder, use a telescoping pole. A telescoping kit that has cleaning heads costs about $100 at a home improvement store. A mixture of dish detergent, vinegar and warm water works best. QUICK TIP: Wash windows on a cloudy day. Direct sunlight can leave streaks.

Make easy changes out of the gate, such as replacing sugary desserts with fruit or dark chocolate.

What’s the best laundry detergent?

Focus

on

Whole Foods

Make fresh and unpackaged foods, such as whole grains and produce the centerpiece of your diet, and try to limit highly processed foods to one day a week.

Liquids works best. The top liquids Tide Plus Ultra (28 cents per and Persil ProClean (22 cents per load) QUICK TIP: Testing showed that using the liquid detergents to dab a stain works as well, if not better, than spray stain removers.

Eat More Fruits & Veggies

Is skim milk healthier than whole milk?

Shoot for five servings a day of fruits and vegetables. There is a link between people who eat more fruits and vegetables showing an improvement in their mental wellbeing.

Go for the Microbiome

For years, dietitians have said skim is better for people looking to lose weight. But, current research says that the fats in milk are not associated with weight gain, type-2 diabetes, heart disease or inflammation.

Look for foods that contain ‘good’ bacteria (aka probiotics) - foods like yogurt, fermented veggies, garlic, onions, leeks, and high fiber foods.

When should I review my car insurance policy?

Look to the Mediterranean

More evidence suggests the health benefits of the Mediterranean-like diet. Foods with whole grains, fatty fish, nuts and olives are staples of the Mediterranean. The diets with folate acid and vitamin B12 have been associated with a reduced risk of depression.

Insurance prices hae skyrocketed, if you haven’t noticed. Shopping your policy around every 1-2 years is advisable. And, review anytime (1) you’re driving less, (2) your car is paid off or getting older, (3) your children no longer drive your car, or (4) your assets have changed and you need more protection.

5 STEPS TO LOVE IT OR LIST IT THIS SPRING

When we transform a “lived in” home to a “market ready home”, guess what everyone says? “Now, I don’t want to move!” In today’s low inventory real estate market your dream home could get listed tomorrow. Why not be ready to upgrade, just in case? And it’s true, there’s more than one benefit to living this way. You’ll enjoy your dwelling and host more often too. Make these five simple changes to spruce up this spring, *plus one big budget bonus.

#1 Clean the things you touch every day. Things like door handles, light switches, inside your oven, microwave, and refrigerator. CLR: Calcium Lime Rust. It’s lurking in your showers and faucets. Get rid of it.

#2 Refresh your linens.

Color may be in, but white still feels so fresh. And since it discolors quickly, find the deals (think Home Goods, Pottery Barn, and holiday markdowns). Have you ever brightened those whites with blue wash? It’s a miracle worker!

#3 Clean your windows.

How refreshing to look outside on a sunny day. I bet you don’t even notice all the water spots, stains, and spider webs. When they go away, it’ll feel like you’re on a vacation with a view.

#4 Closets. Closets. Closets.

Everyone wants bigger. No matter the size, yours can feel spacious too. Haven’t worn it in three years? Pack it up. Store it. Sell it. Donate it. Whichever you fancy, but make some room for what you love. Buyers don’t want over-stuffed closets and neither do you! Aim for organized with the illusion of spacious.

#5 Pick a place to sparkle. Is that half bathroom you and your guests use looking a little drab? Update it. Is your dining room collecting dust? Paint it your favorite color and upgrade the lighting. Find a space in your house that needs a little life and go for it!

* BUDGET SPLURGE:

Window treatments take any room to the next level. They are a big investment, but they’re worth every outcome!

SPRING PREP Pro Treatments To Refine And Tone Your Body

Spring is just around the corner, bringing beach days, weddings, and warm-weather getaways. If you want to feel confident without relying on intense workouts or crash diets, professional treatments can help smooth, tone, and refine areas that may need a little extra attention. Dr. Gunn recommends two advanced technologies—PHYSIQ and EmSculpt NEO—designed to enhance muscle tone, reduce stubborn fat, and improve skin firmness with little to no downtime. Plus, if you’re on a weight loss journey, medical weight loss shots can further support your goals. Here’s how you can feel refreshed and confident all season long.

PHYSIQ is a non-invasive body treatment that combines heat and electrical stimulation to help tone muscle, tighten skin, and reduce fat in stubborn areas. It utilizes STEP technology (Sequential Thermal & Electrical Pulse) by incorporating both electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) and a superluminescent diode matrix (SDM) laser to build muscle. By delivering both energies from each of its four applicators, PHYSIQ provides the variable stimulation to maximize results in a comfortable, no downtime treatment. Unlike other treatments, PHYSIQ is designed to effectively treat both larger and smaller areas, making it a great option for refining specific problem spots.

Benefits

• Tones muscles while reducing fat

• Helps smooth and tighten crepey skin

• Targets multiple areas, including abs, arms, thighs, and buttocks

• Painless with no downtime

• Delivers both immediate and long-term results

Enhance Your Results with Medical Weight Loss

Both PHYSIQ and EmSculpt NEO are excellent for refining and toning your body, but the right choice depends on your goals. PHYSIQ is a great option if you want to focus on fat reduction and skin tightening, while EmSculpt NEO is better suited for those looking to build muscle and improve definition. For optimal results, they can even be combined to treat multiple areas at once.

For those looking to enhance muscle tone while also reducing fat, EmSculpt NEO is a highly effective option. This treatment uses a combination of HIFEM (high-intensity focused electromagnetic) technology and radiofrequency (RF) heating to stimulate muscle contractions and break down fat cells. It’s ideal for those who want to improve definition, especially in the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks.

Benefits

• Strengthens and tones muscles with HIFEM technology

• Burns up to 30% of fat mass and increases up to 25% of muscle mass

• Firms skin with radiofrequency heating

• Equivalent to 24,000 crunches in a single session

• Helps improve abdominal separation (diastasis recti)

• No pain or downtime

Which Treatment is Best for You?

Both PHYSIQ and EmSculpt NEO are excellent for refining and toning your body, but the right choice depends on your goals. PHYSIQ is a great option if you want to focus on fat reduction and skin tightening, while EmSculpt NEO is better suited for those looking to build muscle and improve definition. For optimal results, they can even be combined to treat multiple areas at once.

FINDING BALANCE

Because we are passionate about what we do at LLH Healthcare and believe in our company’s mission of “Live Life Healthy”, our work is not something we need to es-cape from as it aligns with our values and purpose. Instead of viewing work and life as separate, we see them as complementary parts of a meaningful journey.

LLH Healthcare’s recent renovation of the historic Denechaud Building on 2nd Avenue in downtown Birmingham for our corporate headquarters solidifies our connection to the city our company was founded in. By sponsoring local charitable events such as Jazz Cat Ball, Heart Ball, Alabama Veteran’s Gala and Kid’s Play, we are committed to this incredible city and our clients here!

FINDING BALANCE

All working moms probably feel the pull of the right balance. I try to start my day early before my household wakes up. When my days are consistently starting first with reading my Bible and praying then giving to my family and work, I feel more balanced.

Most McDonald’s are locally owned and operated. We are always hoping to support our communities, and be a good place to work. Being involved in schools, in charities, and in other local businesses is important to us.

WOMEN IN REAL ESTATE REAL ESTATE WOMEN

FINDING BALANCE

Balance isn’t about splitting time perfectly—it’s about being fully present wherever you are. When I’m with my family, I’m intentional about unplugging and making that time count. When I’m working, I give it my all, knowing that efficiency and delegation allow me to show up where I’m needed most. I’ve also learned that building the right team is key—having a strong, aligned team at HBH Realty means I don’t have to do it all alone. I can trust that things are running smoothly while also making space for my own life outside of work. At the end of the day, balance comes from prioritizing what truly matters—family, health, and purpose-driven work. That’s what keeps me grounded and energized for both my career and my personal life.

At HBH Realty, our commitment to the community goes beyond just buying and selling homes—we’re focused on making the entire real estate experience seamless and stress-free. That’s why we built HBH Hub, launching in Spring 2025. This first-of-its-kind space brings together everything buyers and sellers need under one roof—real estate, mortgage services, painters, landscapers, and more—so they can optimize their time and eliminate the common gaps in the process. Our goal is to provide a concierge-level experience that not only simplifies real estate transactions but also supports local businesses and professionals, strengthening the community we serve.

As a single parent and business owner finding balance can be challenging. Building a strong leadership team has been invaluable. Having people I can rely on when I’m on mom duty is a relief.

The Collective Salon Salons are often a conduit in a community. I say we were social media before social media. Celebrating Birmingham and supporting local organizations has been a part of our mission from the beginning.

FINDING BALANCE

As a wife, mother of four, business owner, and creative, balancing work and life is a fluid process. Learning to ride the waves of the highs and show myself grace during the lows is fundamental to staying both fully inspired and fully engaged. I strive to stay intentional in the art I create, in the business I run, in my client relationships, and most importantly, in time spent with my family. Staying rooted in faith, maintaining a steady beat of habits and structure, and creating pauses to recover and recharge are practices that allow me to wear many hats each day to create more equity in their assets.

Commitment to community has always been at the heart of my vision for Paperhaus. Each member of our team has unique talents and gifts, and investing in our local and artistic communities allows us to pay forward our array of skills and industry expertise. We offer time and creative resources to various local churches, philanthropic organizations, and nonprofits of all sizes, allowing them to build brand awareness, elevate their galas and events, and increase monies raised to directly help individuals in need. Additionally, we mentor budding artists to help them hone their crafts, gain experience in their fields, and ultimately, spread their wings to launch their own businesses and endeavors.

FINDING BALANCE

Balancing work and life is all about time management and being present in the moment. When I’m with my patients, I give them my full attention, and when I’m with my family, they are my priority. By managing my time efficiently, I am able to balance work and family and give my best to both.

As a partner at Dermatologists of Birmingham, I am deeply committed to helping my patients achieve healthier skin and greater confidence. Whether treating medical concerns like skin cancer or providing advanced aesthetic treatments, my goal is to offer expert, personalized care tailored to each individual. I believe that skin health is more than just appearance—it’s about well-being and quality of life. Through education, innovation, and compassionate service, I strive to make a lasting impact on my patients and the community I serve.

FINDING BALANCE

I’m incredibly fortunate to have a career I genuinely love, so finding balance isn’t terribly difficult for me. I may be checking emails or jumping on calls with clients and candidates at odd hours, but I also have the freedom to travel frequently and structure my days as I see fit. My one non-negotiable is my morning routine—despite not being a morning person by nature, I drag myself out of bed at 5am to work out, read, and enjoy my coffee before anyone else is in the office. I find this sets the tone for a successful day.

At Talent Recruiting Professionals, we go beyond traditional recruiting to serve as true partners and connectors in the Birmingham business community. Our success stems from a simple philosophy: we take the time to truly understand both our clients’ cultures and our candidates’ aspirations, ensuring every match drives mutual growth and success. We’re passionate about career matchmaking. It’s not just about making placements - it’s about making a difference through meaningful, lasting partnerships.

I calendar family and fun-time just like I do work commitments. I find that I keep those appointments much more frequently when on the calendar. It is a good reminder to work more efficiently or start earlier or skip lunch, to ensure that I have completed the necessary work before the time to leave for the calendared event.

Nothing Without a Woman

“This is a man’s, man’s, man’s world. But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl.”
- James Brown, The Godfather of Soul – 1966

All of the best winemakers, man or woman, I’ve had the good fortune to meet will reflect upon a certain, guaranteed truth when we discuss their wines. The truth is this; they wouldn’t have succeeded without support from others, usually family, and especially their mothers. The men might be “in charge” of the winery in some respects, but there is often a matriarch that is really making everything possible. The wines we are featuring in this edition of About Town couldn’t have flourished without their respective matriarchs.

THE EYRIE VINEYARDS, “ESTATE” CHARDONNAY:

Diana and David Lett founded The Eyrie Vineyards back in 1965. They had two young sons, David was a traveling school textbook salesman, and there was no (and we mean zero) wine infrastructure in Oregon. In the face of some hilariously absurd odds, the Letts made Eyrie into a world-class winery. Not only that, but their rising tide also lifted the ships around them to the point that some French legends (see next entry) actually invested in Oregon to follow the lead of the pioneering Letts. Although famous for their Pinot Noir, one shouldn’t sleep on their Chardonnay. Now run by their son Jason, Eyrie is still rising in quality and profile. Jason will quickly correct anyone who omits Diana from the Eyrie story. To this day, she still has a say in the winery. And we are all the more fortunate as a result.

DROUHIN OREGON, “ROSE ROCK” PINOT NOIR:

The French winery Maison Joseph Drouhin was founded back in 1880. This esteemed winery was always looking for opportunity and in 1987 Domaine Drouhin Oregon was created. It was the result, in part, of the 1979–1980 Paris Wine Olympics where David Lett’s The Eyrie Vineyards (see previous entry) of Oregon took second place behind a 1959 Drouhin wine. The French obviously know a thing or two about wine, and they know a thing or two about progress. The current generation at Drouhin is led by Veronique Drouhin who learned not only from her father, but also from “what I believe to be the first female hired as head winemaker in Burgundy,” when Veronique was ten years old. After graduating from the Oenological program in Dijon as the only female in her class, she immediately took over in Oregon. She has helped propel the Drouhin operation in Oregon to the highest echelons of the wine world.

ROBERT BIALE VINEYARDS, “PARTY LINE” ZINFANDEL:

The winery is literally named after a man, but the eponymous Robert will be the first to tell you that his parents laid the foundation. Aldo and Clementina were making wine during Prohibition and selling it on the “Party Line.” Don’t know what a Party Line is? Ask your grandparents! Or we can try to explain. In some rural areas a phone line would be shared by many neighbors. The Biale family shared a party line where Clementina would take the calls and, through code words, sell bootleg jugs of delicious Zinfandel. Clementina, until she passed in 2017, would be at the winery practically every single day checking in to make sure that everyone was fed, things were running smoothly, and (most explicitly) that the books were balanced. She was a matriarch straight out of central casting and Clementina was a Nonna who made it happen.

CENTORRI MOSCATO:

Gotta finish with a touch of sweetness. After watching generations of men in their family make Moscato, Elenora decided to strike out on her own and take the ladies of the family with her. Their winery, Centorri, is fully owned and managed by women: estate manager and winemaker Eleonora Brangero, along with her mother Emiliana and grandmother Camilla—known as the “ladies of Moscato.” They make some unashamedly delightful Moscato. Treat yourself.
