What Are the Medical Benefits of Massage?

Rehabilitation, posture correction, and stress relief are just a few areas where therapeutic massage demonstrates its impressive power. We asked the therapists at SK Therapeutic Massage about the benefits of massage therapy, and what we uncovered is remarkable.

AIDING REHABILITATION

Following injury or surgery, the road to recovery can be arduous. Enter massage therapy, a trusted ally in the rehabilitation process. By alleviating postoperative pain, reducing stress, and facilitating muscle realignment, therapists empower patients to reclaim mobility and vitality.

CORRECTING POSTURE

In a world where slouched posture is increasingly common, the importance of proper alignment cannot be overstated. Massage therapy has emerged as an option for correction, coaxing muscles and joints back into balance. Through targeted modalities, individuals rediscover balance and kinesthetic awareness, laying the groundwork for enduring posture improvements.

RELIEVING STRESS AND IMPROVING SLEEP

The experience of a Swedish Massage is more than a temporary indulgence; it’s a prescription for peace. As stress melts away, fatigue dissipates, leaving the body refreshed and rejuvenated. Studies have shown massage therapy’s role in enhancing sleep quality, offering respite to millions grappling with nighttime restlessness.

MANAGING CHRONIC PAIN

In the realm of chronic pain, the journey feels endless, with sufferers feeling resigned to a life of discomfort. However, relief is not only possible, but within reach through therapeutic massage. Whether stemming from improper posture, past trauma, or conditions like fibromyalgia and arthritis, therapeutic massage offers hope of improvement.

REDUCING ANXIETY

Amidst the chaos of modern life, anxiety lurks as a persistent problem, but massage therapy acts as a defense, engaging the parasympathetic nervous system to induce a profound sense of calm. By integrating regular sessions into self-care routines, individuals increase their mental resilience, keeping anxiety at bay for the long haul.

The benefits of massage therapy extend far beyond the confines of relaxation. To experience the benefits of massage firsthand, speak with professionals at SK Therapeutic Massage by sending an email to sk@sktherapeuticmassage.com or visiting www.sktherapeuticmassage.com. Through working with a licensed massage therapist, individuals can be empowered to transcend pain, reclaim mobility, and cultivate inner peace.

What’s all the hype about suppliments? Do we really need them? We asked local fitness expert Marilyn McKenzie to tell us what she thinks. This is what she said.

The older I get, the more I learn the importance of taking the right vitamins & supplements for my gut, heart & overall health. Always consult a good naturopath. Also, make sure you are buying the purest form. Most vitamins people purchase from the store are filled with unnatural additives, don’t get those. Order from a reputable company such as: Life Extension, Pure or Life Vantage. Here are some of my recommendations.

THE 4 BEST THINGS FOR YOUR LEGS

Your legs are over 50% of your body. They’re our foundation. These large muscles are an integral part of your overall fitness. They give your body balance, improve overall athletic performance, help prevent injuries and engage the core. Also, because their the largest muscles in your body, developing your legs release positive hormones and burn more calories.

#1 MIX IT UP

The spice of life. Engage in anything athletic, and change it up, so your body is always surprised. Your body stops responding to the sameold same-old. Try adding different elements to your routine each week—yoga, swimming, cycling, walking, or running. Each new exercise will engage a different muscle group and the diversity of movement patterns will ensure comprehensive development of the leg muscles. Plus, you’ll never get bored by a predictable routine.

#2 PRIORITIZE PROTEIN

By prioritizing protein, muscles will repair and grow more efficiently. Including the appropriate amount of protein in your diet supplies muscles with the nutrients needed for ideal results. Identify high-protein foods that can easily be incorporated into your diet. Lean meats, eggs, legumes, and dairy all easily provide needed protein.

Pilates is one of the best ways to strengthen legs while improving core strength and flexibility. A low-impact exercise, Pilates is a combination of controlled movements that aim to build lean muscle. Pilates lengthens your muscles to achieve well-rounded tone. It’s also great for your joints and leads to better posture.

#4 LIFT HEAVY

Yes, lift heavy. It’s not always the easiest, but more and more research is proving it’s advantages over just basic resistance training. Proper form is key when lifting heavy in order to avoid injury and see results. Increase weight gradually and build in rest and recovery between workouts. For optimum results stick to the fundamental exercisessquats, deadlifts and lunges

Kaci Hamilton is certified in barre, spin and Pilates, and she has been working at Trifusion for 6 years teaching a mixture of cardio classes with weights as well as barre classes. And for the past year, has been teaching Pilates at Therapy South where she has loved learning and getting certified in Pilates.

3. Outdoor Television & Speakers. Yes, you need both!

The Road to Recovery

An Inspiring Update on Lulu’s Condition

IN EARLY SUMMER , all of Birmingham was shocked and horrified by the news of a shark attack off Rosemary Beach that resulted in the critical medical condition of local teenager Lulu Gribbin. Since the attack, hundreds of thousands have been anxiously awaiting her full recovery and return home. Support is clearly shown in her hometown where thousands of families on so many streets have decorated their mailboxes with purple bows. The purple bows, primarily purchased through local shop Smith’s Variety, are intended to be a display of support for Lulu to appreciate on her return.

A recent major development comes in the form of a law introduced by U.S. Senator Katie Britt. According to AL.com, the new law, named Lulu’s Law, “would codify shark attacks as events for which wireless emergency alerts would be transmitted.” Senator Britt hopes that the establishment of Lulu’s Law will prevent shark attacks. Through the new law, authorities would send out shark attack warnings via text message alerts to the public when a shark attack has been reported or if conditions for a shark attack are likely. This alert would be similar to an Amber alert and would work to prevent multiple attacks from occurring in sequence. This is an exciting and remarkable development for Lulu and those affected by the recent shark attacks.

On Lulu’s CaringBridge page, a post from the first of August gives an inspiring and heartfelt update on Lulu’s progress:

Words cannot really describe yesterday or give justice to the magnitude of the moment. Yesterday was a day we have been holding out for since Lulu was attacked by a shark! Powerful may be the best word!

Since Lulu lost her hand and her leg, we have prayed for her to survive, prayed for healing, prayed for less pain, and prayed to make the right decisions for her. One of the first answers to our prayers was that she was alive. She was breathing.  We then found the doctors and facilities where we she needed to be. The next prayer answered was to make the pain lessen which over the course of the first month was answered. The healing of the hand was first and the latest prayer of healing that has happened is the leg. Looking at all of these prayers that have been answered is truly the power of God’s grace.

Lulu is very goal oriented, and this has been evident in all of her therapy sessions. Give her a goal and she will meet and exceed it. Our doctor recognized this from the very beginning. The first time they put in her prosthetic hand she moved the fingers within a minute. Which really was unheard of or at least that’s what they said. The leg took longer to heal because of infection and so many surgeries. The rehab for the leg has been delayed because of that. This week she was fitted for the sleeve; it is what holds the remaining part of the leg to the prosthetic.

We are where we are because of a specific surgeon and what he does for amputees which at some point I will explain in greater detail. Where we are is a place that surgeons come to learn from. It is a highly sought after group and they have fellows that work with them for a year. Each and every surgery Lulu had the same fellow would be attending. Lulu absolutely loves Taylor Swift so before every surgery they would play T Swift, this is what she would listen to before going to sleep. For about a month Lulu was not allowed to shower so this fellow would wash her hair and then braid it for her. It became a ritual.

The fellows graduated this week and knowing Lulu needs a goal our doctor said I want you walking for the first time with her watching. Not going to lie I was like there is no way. Also, I don’t think the prosthetist thought it would happen either, but he did everything in his power to fabricate it. We spent time learning how to put it on and getting the fit just right. I was not expecting anything but that.

The doctor and fellow came into the room. Their band was back together. This was the goal right for her to walk for the fellow for her last day. And boy she did! She was using a walker to be comfortable since this was the first time she had put the leg on. She took several steps in the room. And we thought okay great that was good. Then she said I want to walk the hall. She blew the doors open and walked the halls. She hugged her doctor first. We were all just watching, filming, and following her. And then probably the most incredible moment I have witnessed in my life happened.  She walked to Ellie, her identical twin. She walked straight to her, and she said Ellie I want to hug you. They hug, they cried, we all cried. There was not a dry eye in the hall. They hugged and cried for a while. Then our entire family hugged. It was powerful!

Since June 7th I have witnessed the power of prayer. The power of community. The power of God’s Grace. The power of a good attitude. The power of family and the powerful connection the twins have. I am truly in awe and so incredibly grateful. She made it, she is here, and we are blown away.

Watch out world Lulu is on the move!

In a recent post by Matt Lidle, one of Lulu’s saviors on the day of the shark attack, he shares his reflections on his role in Lulu’s ongoing recovery that conclude with the following: In the end, I’m just grateful that as an ordinary sales guy, I was able to help in some way. Watching Lulu’s recovery and seeing her strength has been incredibly inspiring. I’m thankful that she is with ya’ll, and I hope that one day, we can meet again under happier circumstances.

What I Eat

“Most days I have 3 larger meals and no snacks. This schedule makes me feel my best blood-sugar-wise, and I’m not always hungry or thinking about eating. All my meals are high in protein and keep me satisfied 4 hours or so. Most days I’m around 140 grams of protein.”

Breakfast

Warm Banana Bread Protein Bowl

“Starting my day with a high fiber and high protein meal has been a gamechanger for my afternoon cravings. Being fully nourished early in the day and not playing “nutrient catch up” later is so freeing and doable long term.”

Lunch

Leftover Protein from Dinner

“Lunch is usually a leftover protein from dinner on a salad, potato, or wrap and I always have some chocolate for a lunch dessert.

Here I had a taco salad and added banana peppers and salsa. For my dessert I had a Cottage Cheese Chocolate Chip Cookie and decaf with my homemade Italian Sweet Crème coffee creamer. Love having a fun creamer prepped for happy afternoon coffees.”

Dinner

Lean Protein with Veggies

Dinner is usually one of my recipes or a lean protein with veggies. Today, I had this Buffalo Chicken Bake. It’s a favorite for my whole family so always on my dinner rotation. For dessert, I had a Built bar. I love these for a low fat and low sugar sweet tooth fix. They’re super chewy and always satisfy.

BALANCE

Balancing my blood sugar with high protein meals was life changing for me. I ate “healthy” but still had hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) episodes and insulin resistance fasting glucose levels so didn’t ever feel my best and had crazy afternoon hangry carb cravings. The low blood sugar + not enough protein early in the day lead to 4 o’clock pantry raids and anxiety most afternoons because my well-made body was playing “nourishment catch up”. This cycle had me stuck.”

WELLNESS WITHOUT OBSESSION

“Wellness without obsession is my jam. It’s individual and can shift as you learn and grow. You have to tweak what “works” for you on this journey and not judge others on what works for them.”

EXERCISE

I’m not a fan of plans or strict routines that have certain days of workouts, aka HIIT on Tuesday just because it’s Tuesday. What if my body stressors are too high for intense movement that day from a bad nights sleep, PMS, dehydration, or even fasting too long? When I have more body stressors in my “bucket” I choose a lower impact workout like a long walk or yoga. And when I feel like a champ, I choose more challenging workouts like heavy weights, HIIT, or an outside run. This has been so helpful for a more peaceful relationship with exercise and not being all or nothing. I’ve learned intense exercise + an over stressed body = me, short tempered, exhausted, and hangry by the afternoon. We’re always learning and tweaking as we go on our wellness journeys and this gentle structure has worked for me for years. Just being a little mindful day to day what your body truly needs is a game changer.

A Guide to Navigating Cosmetic Filler

Filler is one of the hottest topics in beauty right now; but with so many choices how do you find the perfect one for you? From navigating your options to finding the right injector, the process can be overwhelming. We’ve put together a simple guide to finding the perfect filler and selecting the right injector.

SELECTING AN INJECTOR

Selecting the right injector for filler is crucial to ensure safety and achieve your desired result. Look for a licensed and experienced medical professional, such as a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic procedures. They should have extensive training in administering fillers.

Also, be sure to review their before-and-after photos and patient testimonials to gauge their expertise and the satisfaction levels of their previous clients. It’s also important to have a detailed consultation where the injector listens to your goals, explains the procedure, discusses potential risks, and creates a customized treatment plan. This will help ensure that you feel confident and comfortable with your decision.

Dr. Gunn is more than just an experienced cosmetic injector—she’s a true artist in her field. With years of hands-on experience and a passion for the latest advancements in cosmetic science, she has mastered the delicate balance between achieving dramatic transformations and maintaining a natural, refreshed look. Dr. Gunn approaches each patient with a personalized touch, combining her in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy with an eye for aesthetics.

BIOSTIMULATING FILLER

Biostimulating fillers are like the slow and steady friend in your beauty toolkit. When added to areas that need a little extra volume, these fillers work their magic by gradually boosting collagen and elastic fiber production over a few months. It’s the perfect way to enhance your look with a subtle, natural touch. Dr. Gunn’s signature treatment with this type of filler is the Liquid Face Lift, which will leave you looking and feeling lifted and refreshed! She combines a custom solution of Radiesse, PRP (or Sculptra), and Skinvive to give you instant lifting, increased volume, and hydration with gradual skin tightening. These plump your skin and kickstart collagen production, giving you a refreshed glow that lasts for about two years.

HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS

Hyaluronic acid fillers come to the rescue by rebuilding lost structure, restoring balance, and softening fine lines and wrinkles. The result? A fresher, more youthful appearance. By precisely placing these fillers, we can restore volume, contour cheekbones, plump thinning lips, and reduce under-eye hollows and dark circles, resulting in a rejuvenated look.

Lip filler is touted for its ability to enhance lip volume for fuller, more youthful-looking lips. Dr. Holly Gunn loves the way lip filler can balance facial proportions or improve the symmetry of the face. And of course, “no duck lips here,” says Dr. Gunn!

Both Restylane and Juvederm are FDA-approved dermal fillers commonly utilized for the enhancement of lip volume, shape, and contour. These hyaluronic acid lip fillers are a smooth, pliable gel texture, which yields a natural appearance with minimal swelling. These fillers maintain shape and integrity for a period of up to one year.

Bellafill is an FDA-approved dermal filler for permanent implantation into the skin for the correction of nasolabial folds, or smile lines. Bellafill is a non-resorbable dermal filler, unlike many other dermal fillers that are absorbed and require reinjection. Bellafill is also approved for the correction of moderate to severe facial acne scars on the cheeks in patients over the age of 21 years.

Playing Pickleball in Birmingham

Pickleball has become one of the nation’s favorite new pastimes and thousands across Birmingham have taken up the sport in recent years. While many have grown to love the sport, for those who are newer to the game, we have put together a Birmingham guide to pickleball complete with the basics of the game, what to buy, where to buy, and where to play.

The Basics

- Scoring: Only the serving team can score points. Games are typically played to 11 pts, and a team must win by 2 pts. (Some variations play to 15 pts.)

- Serve: The serve must be made underhand, and the server must hit the ball diagonally to the opponent’s service court. The serve must clear the non-volley zone, also known as the “kitchen.”

- Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen): Players cannot volley the ball (hit it in the air without letting it bounce) while standing in the non-volley zone, which extends 7 feet from the net on both sides.

- Faults: A fault occurs when the ball is hit out of bounds, does not clear the net, is volleyed from within the non-volley zone, or is volleyed before a bounce has occurred on each side.

What You Need

- Paddle: Pickleball paddles are smaller than tennis rackets but larger than ping-pong paddles. They come in various materials, including wood, composite, and graphite. Wooden paddles are the most affordable, but composite and graphite paddles are lighter and offer better control.

- Ball: The ball used in pickleball is similar to a wiffle ball but slightly smaller and more durable. It is made of perforated plastic and comes in indoor and outdoor versions. Outdoor balls are typically harder and have smaller holes compared to indoor balls.

- Footwear: Proper footwear is important for preventing injuries and providing good traction on the court. Shoes designed for tennis or indoor sports are ideal for pickleball.

- Clothing: Wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows for a full range of motion. Moisture-wicking fabrics can help keep you cool and dry during play.

Where to Play

To accommodate the influx of newly interested players, courts have sprung up across the Magic City and throughout the state. Here are a handful of the city’s top spots to play, and you can visit pickleballadvisor.org/court/ to find the nearest court.

- CityWalk: CityWalk Downtown has quickly become a popular destination for pickleball enthusiasts. The park features 8 courts on the east end and 2 on the west side, making it one of the largest pickleball hubs in the city. The atmosphere (under interstate) is complete with colorful lights, and nearby food truck spaces, adds to the experience.

- Crestwood Park: Crestwood is a longstanding favorite in Birmingham, known for its beautiful outdoor setting. Located near popular spots like Crestwood Tavern and True Story Brewing, it’s a convenient spot for a game of pickleball. The park offers 4 courts, drawing players from all around the area.

- Wald Park: Located in Vestavia off 31, Wald is another top location, known as a favorite location for disc golf, kickball, and pickleball. There’s also George Ward Tennis Center near Valley Rd by Glen Iris.

- Crestline Elementary: Located in Crestline offers a spot in Mtn Brook that attracts big crowds. Their courts are usually full when the weather is good.

Presley and Landry were outfitted by Mtn. High Outfitters. You can see a reel with them @abouttownmag.
Why is it called Pickleball?
Invented in Washington in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, his wife Joan came up with the name which was a reference to the thrown-together leftover non-starters in the “pickle boat” of crew races.

An Email Interview Miss Alabama - Abbie Stockard

on Thurs July 25 at 11:02am info@abouttown.io wrote:

I’m confused. I feel like there’s multiple Miss Alabama titles that we hear about. What is the official MIss Alabama?

There is only one Miss Alabama. The name “Miss Alabama” was trademarked in 1921 by the Birmingham News. I realize there may be confusion because of the creation of other pageant systems; however, only one official Miss Alabama exists.

on Thurs July 25 at 1:35pm info@abouttown.io wrote: In Miss Alabama you competed as Miss Hoover, but you’re from Vestavia. How does that work?

You can compete for the title of Miss Alabama no matter what area you are from. As long as you are a resident of Alabama or attend college in Alabama, you are eligible to compete in a local preliminary competition. For example, my first year I was Miss Cahaba Valley, then Miss Trussville, and then Miss Hoover.

I always get nervous watching the contestants answering the ‘current events’ question. Is that the most nerve-racking part of the competition?

Personally, the on-stage question makes me the most nervous, because I know everyone is watching me and I get scared that maybe I don’t know enough about the specific topic. However, over the years I have had to change my mindset. Each time I had to do an on-stage question, I would spend the whole day repeating to myself, “I love on-stage question!” This was a way for me to get excited and remind myself that it is just another opportunity to show who I am!

on Mon July 29 at 10:55am info@abouttown.io wrote: Now that you’re Miss Alabama, what will be on your publicity calendar leading up to Miss America? Will you still have time to be on the Auburn dance team?

I will be taking a year off of school, so I will not be a Tiger Paw this year. I will have a lot on the publicity calendar leading up to Miss America! The local preliminary competitions for the next year have already begun, so I am traveling across the state to emcee those events! I also get booked for appearances each week throughout the year! Whether that be work events, holiday events, or fundraising opportunities for Cystic Fibrosis, I will be very busy this year!

In addition, I will be preparing for Miss America both physically and mentally to make sure I am best prepared to represent Alabama. You can follow along and stay up to date by following my Instagram @missamericaal or @abbiestockard.

Is dancing at football games more fun than basketball, or do basketball performances offer a more confined spotlight on the dance team?

I would say football is where we showcase a lot of our pom skills since we do a lot of spiriting, and basketball games allows us to get creative with our performances. Our numbers can vary and may either be pom, jazz, or hip hop.

on Wed July 31 at 4:55pm info@abouttown.io wrote:

Any predictions on the upcoming football season? (What do you think your record will be?)

I feel like I do not know enough to make an accurate prediction; however, to me, the best thing about Auburn is that win or lose, Auburn people will continue supporting Auburn no matter what. We are a school built on spirit!

on Fri August 2 at 4:36pm info@abouttown.io wrote:

You’ve been on the dance team for several seasons. Is each season a fresh start, or are you almost guaranteed a spot if you want to return?

Each season is a fresh start! Everyone has to tryout for the team again, even if you are a returner. This means that there is no guarantee and 19 spots available, not including our captain. Our tryout process is two days long.

You’re a competitive collegiate athlete. How has that intense training prepped you for your next steps after college?

One of the most important things I learned is how to successfully manage my time. Each day, I had to stick to a strict schedule in order to accomplish what I needed to do each day. Not only did I have to hold myself accountable to prepare for nursing exams, but I also had a team that was counting on me to show up each day and be my best. I also learned that through hard work and determination, you can accomplish your goals and doors will open along the way. My involvement has also taught me the value in communication and outreach.

My plan is to receive my Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Auburn University. From there, I will get critical care experience before applying to Nurse Anesthesia School. I hope to acquire my Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia Practice and become a Pediatric Nurse Anesthetist.

What Do You See?

MY STORY BEGINS with growing up very active, trying new things from sports, to acting, to whatever peaked my interest. Being the youngest out of 3, I did a lot of watching and a lot of learning. Learning how important it is to stay close, no matter the cost. I am blessed to have a wonderful example and foundation set before me from my parents, my grandparents and I believe, generations I never even knew. I learned on both ends, what love really was and how important it is to have a strong foundation in every area of your life to have true success and happiness. My father, Brian Skelton, was the leader of not only our home, but of the city I grew up in and love, Hoover. He was the former mayor, a business man and a city council member. He taught me how to, first hand, whole heartedly lead with strength, courage, confidence and love. We had a special connection that I will never be able to put into words. I watched how he lived, not only in the public but behind closed doors. He spent every single day living for others. He was truly my best friend. With that mindset of staying focused on others, I watched as it led to him neglecting his own self. Since I can remember, growing up, I watched his health begin to decline from diabetes, then kidney failure, and multiple surgeries. Nobody would ever know the battles he faced because every day he got up with a smile on his face, ready to give. I remember it like it was yesterday, when he got that dreadful call that it was colon cancer. I started crying and he immediately looked at me with a smile on his face saying,“baby, it is going to be okay. God’s got me, He’s got us! It’s gonna be alright.” Throughout that time I experienced a lot of loss; all of my grandparents, my aunt and my uncle died. All of whom I loved so much. I also started to watch addiction come in as it so effortlessly seemed to, and take over one’s life and those around it. My father’s health continued to deteriorate, and he went to be with the Lord in July of 2016. Even though I told myself “oh, it’s fine, I’m strong, it is going to be okay.” In truth, I was not fully understanding and feeling the depth of what had just taken place. I found myself running to anything and everything that would make me happy, and feel better in the moment; from people to food to partying and more. All of this to say, that landed me at 300+ lbs at 15 years of age.

You may just see the physical change. But if you go a little deeper, you will see a transformation of the body, mind and the Spirit of God in my life. I believe that the things we go through in life change us, mold us, and grow us for a greater good to change the lives of others in the best way possible. How you may ask- by living as healthy, bold, confident and courageous individuals, so we can walk into our unique calling.

I went cold turkey and cut gluten. Now let me tell you, that was hard at first. Food was comfort was the diet plan I had lived. If we had veggies, I was picking them out of some wonderful casserole my mom would make, then off to see my friends in the Zaxby’s drive-thru later that night! After going gluten free, within a year, I had lost close to 80 lbs and the migraines were GONE, praise God. I continued to grow in my faith by having consistent quiet times with the Lord and getting involved in church again at Church of The Highlands. After graduating esthetician school, where I had the opportunity to learn and grow in my passion of medical based esthetics and skin care, problem solving and helping others feel beautiful in their own skin, I was also working on my fitness. On the flip side, seeing changes at such a rapid rate became an idol within itself. I was obsessing over every calorie, every bite of food, every sip I put in my body. I didnt realize it, but I was finding my worth in what I looked like, and was doing anything and everything that made that number on the scale go down. Unhealthy extremes took place and I knew I was at another new low that caused me to self-isolate, have poor health and low energy. I started to pray for God to help me. Help me feel worthy enough in who I was, exactly where I was. Thankfully, He pulled me out, and day by day I got better and was brought back into the right mindset of longevity and health. By this point, I was now working at my local gym, getting educated and certified in nutrition and personal training, and my passion was born.

Sure enough, not long after, a door was opened. I found Restore Hyper Wellness– the award winning industry and creator of an innovative new category of care– HYPER WELLNESS! What is Hyper Wellness? Well it involves a system of total balance, energy and proactive healing. It is their belief that this holistic approach to wellness is what is missing from conventional healthcare, which is why they have made it their mission to bring hyper wellness to as many people as possible through their cutting edge modalities and expert guidance, “so you can do more of what you love.” At Restore, I started to learn more how wellness is connected to things such as stress management, energy, sleep, recovery, weight.

I was having health issues, migraines, pain and mental fogginess. I spent my days going to different doctors searching for answers, but deep down I knew it all began in my heart. Once I was real with myself, I realized not only did I have dreams to achieve, but I had another soldier in heaven watching over me. Guiding me. Cheering me on, and I was determined to make him proud.

After this I was led to a new doctor. She took a look at my bloodwork to see if I had any food sensitivities that could be causing the migraines. I was so confused of correlation bewteen what I ate to how I felt. Well, sure enough gluten seemed to be the #1 inflammatory marker and could be the cause of my headaches.

I was now down close to 150 lbs and with significant weight loss came loose skin. I was led to go see Dr. Jason Jack at Plastic Surgery Specialist, who I believe is the best plastic surgeon in the area. From his skill, facility, staff, and bed-side manner, Dr. Jack removed the skin on my belly and helped me feel so much more strong and confident, revealing everything that was underneath that I had worked so hard to achieve. If it is going to make you a more confident, healthy version of yourself and love those around you at a greater capacity, why not go for it? We only get one life and you deserve the best one!

A year later, after my recovery, I had goals I was ready to achieve. I completed my first half marathon, grew in my weight lifting and overall gym performance, and I knew the gym had become home for me. It was a place to grow in every area: relationships, the mind, the body and so much more. God brought so many into my life during this time to provide guidance, wisdom, and advice when I needed it most, especially when I was in great need of fa therly figures and counsel. Two of those men being Brandon Cobia and Greg Hasberry who provided so much wisdom and guidance in many areas of life, and it was time to level up my training. You see, this whole time I had been coaching myself. But if I intended on growing and coaching others in the future, I knew it was time to learn from the best, the one and only, Greg Hasberry with Elite Fitness. He has taught me how to strengthen myself physically with proper diet and exercise. But he also taught me mental strength, and what it takes to be a champion inside and outside of the gym, especially when trauma hits. He taught me that accountability is not only helpful but vital. You have to have those around you that are for you. Those that see your vision, and are actively cheering you on to achieve it. We all need each other.

Deep down I knew it all began in my heart.

The door of joy and love had been shown to me through a different lense. The importance of living to the fullest in every moment, how to lead and have vision, actively working towards it, with great pas sion. I learned to only look forward to the road ahead. Believe the best is yet to come. Be present. And, give your all in every moment because in an instant, everything can change. None of these lessons and life pillars end when the lives of those around us on earth do. When you come out of what you’ve been carried through, it shapes you into all you’ve been created to be, a divine masterpiece!

We have to recognize we’re not our past. We are not defined by our traumas, addictions, hurts, or anything else that may have taken place in the past. But we should learn from them. What is holding you back from stepping into the present moment, to whole heart edly fulfill the calling you have been assigned? You are needed here on this earth. Every single thing you have gone through will not hold you back, but it will prosper you into where you are meant to be- living a life of joy and impact, with a strong, healthy mind, body and spirit. I dare you. Place it in the hands of the One who understands it all, the One who created you with unique inten tion and design. And watch him turn that pain into purpose. Not only will He turn it, but you will come out with a confidence, a boldness, a healthy state of being. Only He can provide and guide you into. Keep going, don’t give up, press on in love. You got this. Xoxo.

Plastic surgery has evolved significantly over the past few decades, transitioning from a niche practice to a mainstream phenomenon. Once primarily associated with media stars and the ultra-wealthy, plastic surgery is now accessible to the masses, making it a ubiquitous part of modern culture. As techniques have advanced and societal perceptions have shifted, more people are turning to surgical and non-surgical procedures to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence.

Procedures and Their Popularity

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation remains one of the most sought-after procedures. This procedure appeals to a broad demographic, offering options for both subtle enhancements and more noticeable changes.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas of the body. It’s popular among individuals seeking to contour their bodies and achieve a slimmer silhouette. Advances in technology, such as laser-assisted liposuction, have made the procedure less invasive with quicker recovery times.

Rhinoplasty

Commonly known as a nose job, rhinoplasty can alter the shape, size, and structure of the nose. It’s frequently chosen by individuals looking to improve facial harmony or correct breathing issues. This procedure has seen a steady increase in demand due to its significant impact on overall facial aesthetics.

Facelifts and Non-Surgical Alternatives

Facelifts aim to reduce signs of aging by tightening sagging skin and muscles on the face and neck. However, non-surgical alternatives like Botox, dermal fillers, and thread lifts have surged in popularity due to their minimal downtime and immediate results.

Tummy Tucks (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying muscles. It’s particularly popular among individuals who have experienced significant weight loss or post-pregnancy changes.

Body Contouring

Body contouring encompasses various procedures designed to reshape and enhance the body’s contours. Procedures like arm lifts, thigh lifts, and body lifts are popular among individuals who have undergone significant weight loss and want to remove excess skin and improve their body shape.

Plastic Surgery What You Need to Know

Let’s delve into the current trends in plastic surgery, exploring the most popular procedures, the changes in the industry over the past few years, the driving forces behind these trends, and the demographic data illustrating who is opting for these enhancements.

Hair Restoration

Hair restoration procedures, including hair transplants and scalp micropigmentation, have become increasingly common. Hair transplants involve moving hair follicles from one part of the body to the thinning or balding areas, while scalp micropigmentation creates the illusion of a fuller head of hair.

Brazilian

Butt Lift (BBL)

The BBL involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks to create a fuller, more lifted appearance. This procedure has gained immense popularity in recent years, driven by cultural influences and the desire for fuller body shapes.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to correct droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat. The procedure can also help improve vision in cases where droopy eyelids obstruct the field of view.

Injectable Treatments

Injectable treatments, including Botox and dermal fillers, have become staples in the world of cosmetic enhancements. Botox is used to relax facial muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, while fillers add volume to areas like the lips, cheeks, and under the eyes. These treatments are favored for their quick results, minimal downtime, and non-invasive nature.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive fat reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate stubborn fat cells. It’s a popular alternative to liposuction for those looking to target specific areas of fat without surgery. The procedure is often used on the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and double chin.

Changes in the Last 5 Years

Technological Advancements

Innovations in plastic surgery techniques and equipment have made procedures safer, less invasive, and more effective. For instance, the development of advanced laser technologies has improved the precision and outcomes of various treatments. Minimally invasive procedures with shorter recovery times have become increasingly popular, attracting individuals who might have been hesitant to undergo traditional surgery. The introduction of 3D imaging and virtual reality has also revolutionized the consultation process. Patients can now visualize the potential outcomes of their procedures before committing, leading to more informed decisions and higher satisfaction rates.

Increased Focus on Self-Care and Wellness

People are prioritizing their physical along with their mental well-being. Individuals are seeking treatments that enhance their appearance and boost their confidence. The concept of “tweakments”—subtle, non-surgical enhancements—has gained traction. The rise of wellness culture has also led to an increased interest in procedures that promote a healthy and active lifestyle. For example, body contouring treatments like CoolSculpting and minimally invasive fat reduction procedures have become popular among those looking to achieve their fitness goals.

Pandemic Influence

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the plastic surgery industry. During lockdowns, many people had the opportunity to work from home, which provided the perfect cover for post-surgical recovery without the need for extended time off work. The rise of video conferencing also made individuals more aware of their facial features. The pandemic also prompted a shift in priorities, with many people focusing on self-care and personal well-being. The increased emphasis on self-improvement and mental health led to a rise in interest in aesthetic procedures as a means of boosting confidence and overall happiness. As a result, the plastic surgery industry saw a notable increase in inquiries and procedures during and after the pandemic.

Social Media and Celebrity Influence

Social media platforms, especially Instagram and TikTok, have played a pivotal role in shaping plastic surgery trends. Influencers and celebrities openly discussing their procedures have normalized plastic surgery and reduced the stigma associated with it. Before-and-after photos, video testimonials, and live procedure broadcasts have demystified the process, making it more accessible to a broader audience. Celebrity endorsements and the “Kardashian effect” have particularly influenced the popularity of procedures like Brazilian Butt Lifts and lip augmentations. The desire to emulate the looks of popular figures has driven many individuals to seek out similar enhancements.

What’s Driving This Change?

Cultural Influences

The rise of the “selfie culture” and the desire for a photogenic appearance have fueled the demand for facial procedures. Additionally, the influence of celebrities and social media personalities who openly discuss their cosmetic enhancements has normalized plastic surgery and made it more aspirational. The beauty standards promoted by popular culture figures have also contributed to the popularity of certain procedures. For example, the desire for a defined jawline, fuller lips, and high cheekbones has driven the demand for injectables and facial contouring treatments.

Technological Advancements

The development of new materials and techniques has also expanded the range of available procedures. For example, the introduction of high-quality silicone implants and innovative fat transfer methods has improved the outcomes of breast augmentation and Brazilian Butt Lifts.

Changing Perceptions of Beauty

This change is evident in the increasing popularity of procedures that enhance natural beauty. For example, there is a growing trend towards subtle lip enhancements and facial contouring that highlight one’s natural features. Patients are seeking procedures that provide subtle enhancements without the need for extensive surgery.

Increased Access to Information

Online forums, blogs, and review platforms have created communities where people can share their experiences and offer support. This sense of community has made plastic surgery more approachable and less intimidating. Additionally, the transparency provided by online resources has increased trust between patients and surgeons, leading to higher satisfaction rates and better outcomes.

Who’s Doing What?

Baby Boomers (Born 1946-1964)

Baby boomers are primarily interested in procedures that address the signs of aging. Facelifts, neck lifts, and eyelid surgeries are popular among this age group, as they seek to maintain a youthful appearance. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, baby boomers account for approximately 35% of all cosmetic surgical procedures. Many baby boomers are also opting for non-surgical treatments like Botox and fillers to address wrinkles and fine lines. The desire to age gracefully and maintain an active lifestyle is a driving factor for this demographic.

Generation X (Born 1965-1980)

These individuals are often focused on maintaining their appearance as they age. They commonly opt for minimally invasive procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers to address wrinkles and fine lines. Additionally, body contouring procedures like liposuction and tummy tucks are popular among this demographic. Generation X represents about 30% of all cosmetic procedures performed annually. Many Gen Xers are also exploring treatments that offer long-lasting results, such as laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels. These procedures can improve skin texture and tone, addressing concerns related to sun damage and aging. The desire to stay competitive in the workforce and maintain a youthful appearance drives the interest in these treatments.

Millennials (Born 1981-1996)

Millennials are driving the demand for non-surgical enhancements and preventative treatments. They are more likely to invest in skincare, injectables, and laser treatments to maintain their youthful appearance. Procedures like rhinoplasty and lip augmentations are also popular among millennials. This age group makes up around 25% of all cosmetic procedures. Millennials are known for their proactive approach to aging, often seeking treatments that prevent the development of wrinkles and fine lines. The influence of social media and the desire to achieve a polished appearance for online platforms also contribute to the popularity of these treatments.

Generation Z (Born 1997-2012)

The youngest demographic seeking plastic surgery is highly influenced by social media trends and celebrity culture. Non-surgical procedures like lip fillers, Botox, and non-invasive body contouring are particularly popular among Gen Z. They often prioritize achieving a specific look that is popularized on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Gen Z accounts for approximately 10% of all cosmetic procedures. Gen Z individuals are also interested in treatments that offer immediate results and minimal downtime. The desire for instant gratification and the pressure to look good in selfies and videos drive the interest in quick, non-invasive procedures. This demographic is more open to experimenting with their appearance and is willing to invest in treatments that help them achieve their desired look.

Weight Loss Injectables

One Year Later

A year ago we started following a local woman and her experiences taking a weight loss injectible.

AS WE’VE SAID BEFORE About Town does not encourage or discourage anyone from taking any of these injectables, and as with all medications, you should always consult a physician. Here’s some info about our volunteer.

Our Volunteer:

Our subject is a female in her mid-40s. She is not diabetic, and as stated above she has been using Mounjaro. Her goal is to lose 35lbs. She has been taking it for 2 months and has lost 14lbs. She has not altered her exercise routine from where she was before she started. As she explains, “Pure and simple, my main goal was to lose weight. When I talked to the doctor about my goals, she completely got it and we moved forward with her suggestion of using Mounjaro. As a mid-40s woman, it is harder to lose weight – you eat all protein, you fast, you do WW and nothing stuck or was sustainable. I had other friends who had done the injections and, even though I thought I was “cheating”, I wanted to try.”

It’s worth noting that our volunteer began taking Mounjaro at the beginning of last Summer. She has lost 30lbs, and the great majority of that was before last Christmas. She has lost roughly 10lbs throughout this year, and considers the last few months as maintaining.

Here’s What She Said:

“It’s been a year since I started the injectables for weight loss and I have to say I love it. I am down 30 pounds and feel like this is a new normal.

I never tried an injectable that was greater than 5 mg and toward the end, I wasn’t losing as much as just maintaining weight loss. My weight loss goal for the year was 40lbs and I am 10 lbs shy. A few factors … I probably could have made this goal if I had incorporated more exercise. Or increased my dosage.

Regarding exercise, I see why people say that you lose muscle as you do. I did very little exercise over this year. No weight training, but mainly walking. You have to make a point of exercise. When I began the injectables, one of the biggest side effects was exhaustion. It makes sense, you are not fueling your body as you have cut calories, so your body is unable to “run”. Eventually your body gets used to less calories, and you’re able to exercise as needed. (Again, my exercise was minimal.)

Increased dosage: my doctor was great, but very hands off which I like. I didn’t go in to meet with her through the year, but would have calls. She never encouraged increasing the dosage as I was losing at a slow and steady pace (until about 2 months ago). Slow and steady is best.

With some people’s insurance, I know these shots are only $25 a month. If that were the case, I would stay on the injectables for a long time. I, personally, have not had any drastic side effects. I had brief nausea and cramping when I moved from 2.5 mg to 5mg, but nothing more. I don’t ever want to take doses away from those who need them for medical treatment and reasons, but if always available, I would keep with them.

I enjoy a good glass of wine or a cocktail for sure, but these injectables cut that desire and craving to drink.”

What I Learned:

“I didn’t really eat better. I just ate less. Off the shots you have to eat better (I took about a 2 month break to see “how I would do” and I did see my appetite come back. But then I had to realize … You can eat less and still live. Eat ½ the hamburger, not the whole. You don’t have to clean your plate, but you have to be more conscious about monitoring “when you are full.”

Even during the time of just maintaining, I still didn’t have a great interest in food, and the one thing that did bother me is that I wasn’t as thoughtful about dinners, meal planning, etc for my family.”

Unless U

Empowering Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Who They Support

Unless U stands alongside adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, offering them comprehensive support and services to foster their growth academically, spiritually, physically, socially, and vocationally. Recognizing the gap in services for adults after the age of 21, they are committed to creating an environment that promotes independence and empowers individuals to thrive.

The Challenge

Statistics reveal a concerning reality: while 90% of students with disabilities receive support during their school-age years, only 10% continue to receive services after the age of 21. This gap in support leaves many individuals and their families facing uncertainty and limited opportunities for growth and development. Unless U aims to bridge this gap and provide ongoing support to adults with disabilities, enabling them to lead fulfilling and purposeful lives.

How You Can Help

Unless U invites individuals who feel called to support their mission to visit their website, www.unlessu.org, where they can learn more about their work and the impact of their contributions. Whether through financial donations or volunteer opportunities, every contribution makes a difference.

Inspiration

Founded in 2014 by Lindy Williamson Cleveland, Unless U was inspired by Lindy’s older brother, Jordan, who has Down Syndrome. Jordan’s desire for a place to learn, socialize, and belong fueled Lindy’s vision to create Unless U. From humble beginnings around the Williamson family kitchen table with Jordan and five friends, Unless U has grown exponentially. Over the past nine years, they have served over 150 families across two campuses and expanded their services to include job training programs like Unless U Scoops.

Achievement

One parent, Darlene, shared her heartfelt gratitude, expressing how Unless U has transformed her son’s life, providing him with a sense of joy and belonging he had never experienced before.

“For the first time in my son’s life, he is enjoying his time away from home. I’m not getting calls from school to come pick him up in the middle of the day. I drop him off with a happy face and pick him up with a happy face. The teachers are still smiling, too. There have been zero incidents or complaints. This has never happened before. All the students seem so happy to be there. It’s another miracle blessing. The first day, he was reluctant to go inside the building. Today, he seemed disappointed that I was there to pick him up. For many years, my hope and prayer has been for Will to have the chance to live - really live - before he dies, to break free from the prison his mind and body have been housed in. It’s finally happening, consistently happening. I thank my Father in Heaven for the many amazing people He has placed in our path. My heart is so full it might just burst.”

Stories like Darlene’s are a testament to the transformative impact of their programs and the hope they instill in the lives of individuals and families.

TOP FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT WEDDING VENUES

As many people begin to plan their big day, the venue is one of their first decisions. Knowing what you want and expect is crucial. Here are five things from the Barn at Shady Lane to consider.

1. Does it fit your vibe?

It’s one thing to find a place to hold your wedding, it’s quite another to actually decorate and outfit that place to fit the style and mood you want for your guests and family on that day. If it is going to take hundreds of dollars to get to that look and feel, it may be best to keep looking. Is the lighting romantic inside and out? What about night time lighting inside and out? Are the furnishings what you want or will they also need to be “dressed”? Are the grounds curated to support photo opps at every turn?

2. Location, Location, Location

This seems basic but it can instantly make or break a deal. Can guests find the venue?  When your event is over is there lodging close by?  Does it feel so remote and far away that guests could be inclined to decline?

3. Staff and Amenities

We’ve heard of venues that literally leave the door unlocked on the day of the event and that’s the last thing you hear from them. Ask if a venue representative will be there on wedding day to answer questions, to assist with information or to just be a supportive presence. Ask about amenities; things like venue capacity (seated for ceremony, standing for reception, outside seating etc.), restrooms, parking, covered patio space in case of rain.

4. What is included and what is not included in our total?

We are big on financial transparency. Ask about that base line price that was quoted to you. Are there taxes added? Additional fees? Corkage fees? Is the venue also the florist, caterer, decorator and if so, what part of your total goes to food, cake, etc?

5 . Vendor Flexibility

All venues want to do their best to support their clients on their most important day and help them to honor and celebrate marriage in the way they have dreamed. That said, venues typically have rules about vendors. Sometimes the venue requires that ALL vendors come from within their pool. That isn’t a bad thing in itself, but it would be our recommendation that In the interest of transparency it could be helpful to request an itemization of costs so that you know what portion of your fee is going toward food, flowers, linens, cake etc.

GOOD TASTE GOOD TASTE

Treat the Whole Person

Treat the whole person. Something that we lose sight of when considering Health and Wellness is that isolation is not always the solution. WE need to consider the entire entity. Even though we are focused on wine, we sometimes get asked questions which could be construed as somewhat medical in nature. Before I respond I always say, “Please let me be clear – I am not a doctor. I am not a doctor. And I am not a doctor.” So, with that in mind, please let me be clear – I am not a doctor. I am not a doctor. And I am not a doctor. However, I have heard doctors discuss the importance of looking at the big picture when considering courses of action.

How does this relate to wine? Well… it most certainly can from an agricultural perspective. More and more of the best wines we see are wines which practice “non-interventionist” agriculture. The winemakers and farmers do not want to eviscerate the landscape. They simply want the grapevines to be part of a larger, harmonious ecosystem. There are various organizations which can certify farming practices. Some folks do that by using less pesticides. Others forgo pesticides altogether. Still others seek those certifications, such as LIVE (low input viticulture and enology), Salmon Safe, SIP (sustainability in practice), all the way up to Demeter certification. Demeter is the highest degree of organic, sustainable, and biodynamic certification. Getting Demeter certification is borderline becoming a Druid. But the vineyards look, sound, and smell amazing. Mother Nature loves those Demeter folks.

A duo of Demeter Certified Wines. Biodynamics is the next step beyond organics. And Demeter is the nth degree of biodynamics. Biodynamics, in the Demeter definition, views the entire estate as a living organism. Demeter certification compels the winery to consider the tides and phases of the moon to make the best wine. Special concoctions of herbs, minerals and manure may also be planted in the soil to aid fertilization. I’m telling ya… Druids.

ALOIS LAGEDER PINOT GRIGIO *

This is greater than the sum of its parts. One part of the grapes was pressed immediately after harvest to keep the fresh flavors and aromas. Another part was kept on the skins for 15 hours and the third part was in contact with stems and skins for about one-year, absorbing color, some tannin, and other rich flavor components. This ain’t a simple Pinot Grigio.

DOMAINE DE BEAURENARD CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE ROUGE *

For those of you fortunate to travel to France, more specifically the Rhône Valley, this is the type of wine you’d have at a little bistro. It is… just… good. A delicious red wine that is expressive and complex, yet simple. The best meals are the simplest meals. And sometimes the best wines are the simplest. Just grill some sausages, pull the cork, and Robert is your mother’s brother.

Ok, well, with all that in mind here are four wines which are very much in the health and wellness space.

This excellent Oregon Pinot Noir is certified both LIVE and Salmon Safe. The coolest thing, however, is that they are literally horse powered. Horses work the earth, transport items around the vineyard, and also do bit of “mowing.” Oh, how does it taste? Like a delicious classic Oregon Pinot Noir - as you would expect, this one has cherry, strawberry, plum, cola, graham cracker, and black tea.

Lastly, this one is all for our mental health. Honestly how much worse would our world be without Dolly Parton? If there is one thing upon which we can all agree it is this; Dolly Parton is wonderfu l.

DOLLY CHARDONNAY FROM PARTON FAMILY CELLARS

It is exactly what it needs to be and does not pretend to be anything else. This is a Chardonnay that is simply happy to be here Is it the greatest thing ever? Nope. But it is Dolly. And she might be the greatest thing ever. So, use the transitive property that you might recollect from eighth grade math and enjoy this Classic Chardonnay.
