9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Widely known as a “meeting in print,” the AA Reviver communicates the experience, strength, and hope of its contributors and reflects a broad geographic spectrum of current AA experience with recovery, unity, and service.

The AA Reviver is supported through magazine subscription sales and additional income derived from the sale of AA Reviver items.

The awareness that every AA member has an individual way of working the program permeates the pages of the AA Reviver, and throughout its history has been a forum for the varied and often divergent opinions of AA’s everywhere. Articles are not intended to be statements of AA policy; neither does publication of any article imply endorsement by AA or the AA Reviver.

Its editorial team are primarily accountable to the AA Fellowship as a whole. Within the bounds of friendliness and good taste, the AA Reviver enjoys perfect freedom of speech on all matters directly pertaining to AA. Like the AA Fellowship, it mirrors that there is but one central purpose; to try and carry the AA message to alcoholics and practice the AA principles in all its affairs.

MARCH TOPIC; FACING CHALLENGES Challenges come in many forms for us alcoholics,, as the next few stories demonstrate.......

KEEP ON PLAYING I sit here trying to write. I’m sad and angry and I feel defeated. I listen to music and hope it will ease my mind. But my computer keeps shorting and pausing, which breaks the soothing effect of the song. Like the song, I’m trying to play life the way God wants me to. At least I think I am. Then the computer shorts and the noise rings so loud, it’s all I can do to stop before I fall. Then just like the song, I push through and keep playing, I keep trying, keep believing.

Sometimes when things seem too rough, I can feel affection surround my body, heart and soul, and I know I am right where I’m supposed to be. I never had such faith before. It’s not perfect but it is consistent. I know I’m going to be alright. And I know that my Higher Power has a plan for me that I am not meant to see. I know these things because of Alcoholics Anonymous and continuing to stay sober no matter what happens.

I’ve also learned that things fall into place as they are meant to be, not how I want them to be. But I do have to put myself out there. I have to do the footwork. Life hasn’t necessarily become easier, but because of the Steps and Traditions and the Fellowship, it’s become worth living.

I sit here at my computer, my heart aching, my stomach turning, my mind infuriated. All normal emotions, but I don’t drink or use over them. I’m

Members Articles learning to effectively lean into them, feel them and let them go. I know overall this won’t beat me, but teach me. So I keep playing, I keep trying, keep believing.

MY NEW LIFE The topic at my home group the other day revolved around a reading that contained the image of a “battle” for daily living: challenges, disappointments, struggles. Our discussion stayed centered on unexpected difficult events that had cropped up in the past week for group members.

I shared that I didn’t like the word battle. The Big Book says that we have ceased fighting anyone or anything. My last battle was with the bottle, and when I finally admitted defeat, I won. Now that I’m sober, I search for peace and serenity, and know that when I feel like I’m fighting, something is not quite right with the way I’m working my program.

There was actually another word in the reading that day that caught my ear and was more in line with how I want to live my new life without alcohol: adventure!

BACK TO REAL LIFE In the era of virtual AA meetings, a member in New York rethinks the role of technology in his life.

One of the multi-layered particularities of sobriety during the COVID-19 health crises is technology’s role in the pandemic.

It’s a blessing that I’m able to stay sober at all during such a time, since I favour in-person AA meetings to peering at a screen of tiny squares, each containing the miniature likeness of a separate AA member. I would imagine it would be even more difficult staying sober without access to technology. Perhaps our literature may serve a need here.

Last weekend, I made plans to meet up with a friend from one of my virtual meetings in the Brooklyn neighbourhood we call Dumbo. This was a welcome real-life interaction. When I saw Matias, my mind hiccupped.

Accustomed to the Matias in our computer AA room, I was taken aback by the actual person in front of me. Maybe his humanness pleasantly reminded my subconscious of technology’s digital facsimile. We ended up enjoying the sunshine among the masked passersby as we walked through Brooklyn Bridge Park.

There are positive sides to these virtual meetings. But even as I write this article on laptop, I feel disturbed by technology’s authority in my life. I fear losing the capacity for originality and independence. I deactivated my social media account again, a week ago.

Perhaps not attending in-person meetings is an opportunity to nourish a more thorough recovery or gain a greater appreciation for the tangible. One blessing is the in-person AA meetings my sober roommate and I have each morning. I have been reading more too, including books on meditation as well as pages of AA and Al-Anon literature. I speak with my two sponsors on the phone, discussing recovery throughout the course

Members Articles of several calls. My concern is that my phone, for example, deepens my self-involvement. When I glance at my phone, I may see a text message from a friend below a few sentences about a world event, the two ideas presented similarly.

I also wondered recently about the name of my device: it is the “I” phone not the “we” phone, after all. While walking in that Brooklyn park, my friend and I observed many people in their world of earbuds and social media while the sun’s rays fell from the living sky. I confess that in an idle moment I may turn on my device’s technology to observe my face. When my world is dictated by a gadget, which encourages me to think of myself, why not surrender to the subtle destruction of its power? What are the consequences of a world dominated by these small “me-machines”?

ONE BLESSING IS THE IN-PERSON MEETINGS MY SOBER ROOMMATE AND I HAVE EACH MORNING. I HAVE BEEN READING MORE BOOKS TOO, INCLUDING ON MEDITATION I was reading an online article the other day and I noticed an advertisement for sheet music, which I had been researching, alongside the text. Even while staying informed of current events, my little computer reminds me of my wants.

Perhaps it’s best to appreciate technology’s usefulness at a distance.

Maybe I’ll listen to an AA speaker tape later instead of going to a virtual meeting.

BACK TO COURT I sat in my car, fixated on the row of squad cars parked in a neat line nearby.

I had never intended to step inside of this building again, and I watched anxiously as one well-dressed person after another walked through its doors.

Two years into sobriety, AA had already restored many gifts, including the ability to learn. I enrolled in the local community college and promptly resumed my formal education, which I had abandoned when I was drinking.

This semester, one of my assignments was to observe my local government meeting. True to my character defects, I procrastinated until the only meeting I could attend was a Borough Planning Committee meeting in a township where I used to reside. Prior to the meeting, I called the office where it was to be held, and the employee who answered the phone informed me that the township building was attached to the police office. Judging from the ensuing silence on her end of the phone, I probably responded a bit too enthusiastically, “Oh, I know exactly where that is!” However, my relief was rapidly replaced by dread as horrific memories of my drinking days invaded my thoughts.

Now here I sat, stalling in the parking lot, reluctant to enter a building I never thought I would enter again. I had been to this exact place many times during the worst years of my alcoholism, and the last time I was here I had two broken ribs, my left eye was swollen shut, and most of my front teeth were broken off. Today, for the first time, I would enter the building as neither a victim nor a criminal.

I joined the committee meeting tentatively, feeling like an imposter. I was certain that one of these professional-looking people would realize that I didn’t belong amongst them, that I was in the wrong part of the building. I fully anticipated that someone would discreetly approach me and whisper, “Miss, the police office is down the hall.” Instead the people at the meeting smiled and welcomed me.

When I announced that I was a student, they responded to me with such warmth and interest that I felt laike a newcomer introducing myself at my first AA meeting. Several people took the time to speak to me afterward in case I had any questions about the proceedings. On my way home, I was still stunned that no one could tell I was an alcoholic.

I’m gradually learning that although I will always be an alcoholic, I’m so much more than that. When people meet me they don’t identify me as a drunk or a delinquent. They don’t know my past, and I don’t behave like a drunk anymore, though I often still think like one. The people at the committee meeting looked at me and saw a student. When others look at me today, I want them to see a kindhearted person who has something to offer society, both in the Fellowship and out.

THIS AIN’T THE GOURMET BEAN I make coffee for up to three AA groups per week. I enjoy the service and opportunity to help Alcoholics Anonymous. Kathleen is my model of coffee excellence, and she tells me, “Good job.” One commitment has nearly 100 folks in attendance. I use one fast flowmaker with a four-pot burner alongside – including decaf. If I stay above my game, I remain on par … or bogey.

The other night, I was performing my usual meeting rounds with no complaints except one: Lisa made the suggestion of making a pot of stronger coffee for those who prefer mud. I thought this was a good idea.

Then came my second meeting. Turns out, no one was there to make the java at all. So I got down to business. I kept on task, stayed with the flow – even if it wasn’t my commitment. No worry, I thought, until I got backed up with 50 thirsty souls standing around me. They were short tempered, crowding me and barking. “Your coffee is too weak! Someone AA REVIVER

Members Articles said. “There are grounds in this pot!” and “Who taught you to make coffee Joe?” Complaint after complaint! No thanks whatsoever.

Had any of them ever been in my shoes? I was trying the best I could, with no help, and I couldn’t catch up with the demand. This episode might have made me consider drinking again, save one thing: My sponsor and my AA friends kept drilling, “Don’t pick up no matter what!”

So what did I do? I didn’t drink. And I kept my cool and said,” This ain’t the gourmet bean. Please be patient and enjoy your AA meeting.” Then I kept saying the Serenity Prayer. As far as I was concerned, I shot a hole in one no matter what the audience thought.

Pepe Le Pew is a cartoon skunk who is always looking for love from a cat who is not interested for obvious reasons. He keeps saying “Mon petit Chou” which is an actual French term of endearment. It translates as ‘my little cabbage’ which makes sense since all women like to be called round, green vegetables. Ah, the French. But where Pepe is never actually successful in his pursuit, we can be free in our sobriety to seek romance. Where before we had a love relationship with alcohol, and it was a jealous partner, we have the capacity now to build and enjoy relationships. Before we found AA, we didn’t have the mental, and at times the physical, ability to relate to anybody romantically.

Several things are necessary to create and maintain a relationship. First is time. If you are too busy drinking or trying to cover up your drinking or are gone all the time at a bar (in my case in the garage), you don’t have the time to spend on that other person. And the phrase “absence makes the heart grow fonder” only has some validity if there is a strong relationship in the first place. So time in is the first thing you need. The second thing you need is trust. If people can’t trust you to do what you say you’re going to do, any relationship will fall apart. If you lie about where you’re going or what you’re doing or, ahem, how much you’ve had to drink, nobody is going to want to be around you, much less have a romantic relationship.

In many cases, we’ve damaged our relationships beyond repair. People have been very hurt or moved on to other relationships and the relationship can never be salvaged. In those cases, we’ve had to make our amends and learn to live life on life’s terms. In other cases our partners, although very hurt, have given us another chance. That was my situation and I pray every morning that my wife heals from all the pain I put her through with my drinking. Notice I said ‘heals’ rather than “forgives.”

I feel the most I can strive for is healing and have no hope for forgiveness. Other relationships were not hurt in the least. Yeah. That never happens. So how do we mend what we can?

Porfirio’s Recovery Topics Her Perspectives On Recovery Using the AA Program

AA STRUCTURE: GRACE NOT LEGALISM This is Part Two of a three-part series exploring the ways of our AA service structure. The first part covered AA structure at a personal level and the third part, coming in next month’s Reviver, will be an open question regarding an optimum structure. This part, called ‘Grace not legalism’, covers AA structure at a general level.

Alcoholics Anonymous cannot function and will die if nobody volunteers to do service work. Once we’ve found the key to sobriety, we must carry the message of recovery to the alcoholic who continues to suffer. Bringing sobriety within reach of all who want it is the fundamental service our AA fellowship offers. However, our service endeavours need to be organised inside a structure that works for everyone. The AA structure exists so that trusted AA members may do their service work with an emphasis on true fellowship and a dedication to our primary purpose. What we bring to AA and can offer in a spirit of service is usually more than us being available for sponsorship, passing on the message that was imparted to us, unfurling banners and stacking chairs. Our AA service efforts needn’t exclusively involve directly helping someone because we can also indirectly help by being part of AA’s well-defined service structure. What is service but either being the helper to a sick and suffering alcoholic, or being a helper to that helper, or being a helper to the helper of that helper?

Many of us are reluctant joiners; so, we need to feel like we belong and figure out where we belong to be most effective in AA at whatever levels interest us. Although different aspects of AA service are carried out by groups themselves, an organisational structure is needed to carry the message in ways that are beyond individual AA members or groups. The sober alcoholic usually becomes part of the AA structure by representing their home group.

General services have group representatives and Area delegates working through the Conference structure; this framework operates nationwide – and movement-wide – and allows AA to function more broadly. Service offices called CSOs are organised by local groups represented by Service Councils to coordinate 12th step work with AA members, groups and the AA REVIVER

Members Articles general public. People in service positions – whether paid or volunteer – are vital facilitators and caretakers of our services. Therefore, our structure must be as representative and democratic as possible, otherwise informed AA members will lose faith in it. Who would consider supporting a structure not aligned with AA principles and traditions, and not accountable to the fellowship at large?

AA is depicted as an upside-down triangle symbol – the broad base of AA members at the top, and delegated authority at the pointy end below. The bottom of the triangle is not supposed to represent some citadel of power.

Our AA structure shouldn’t function as a hierarchy; it exists as a means of promoting sobriety and enabling people to serve in accordance with AA Traditions and Concepts. These principles are without any legalistic underpinning and make clear there should be no bosses in AA, no rules or regulations, and no governing authority. When AA was ten years old, Bill W wrote an article called ‘Rules Dangerous but Unity Vital’ which explains that in AA we are authorised to serve but never to command. A little later he wrote that “we have in AA no coercive human authority”. Bill’s optimistic assessment has since been ‘white-anted’ and refuted by many legalistic transgressions committed by more than a few AA service entities.

It is up to each group or service body to interpret the AA traditions true to its collective conscience, and to make service decisions in alignment with Tradition 2. In this spirit of grace we elect rotating committees and a rotating leadership therein. Regrettably, the leaders in some service organisations have exploited the apathy, indifference and non-participation most AA members have regarding our fellowship’s decision-making processes.

Shielded from accountability, these ‘indispensable’ autocrats become embedded in their citadels and pursue activities at odds with our spiritual path. In several countries, AA bodies have entered into litigation against AA members and well-intentioned friends of AA. Whether ill-conceived or appropriate, this usually involved little or no prior consultation at a fellowship level. Should certain business matters engaged in by a service body’s executive remain an ‘unknown’ to rank-and-file AA members?

Traditions have been involved to be made into weapons of war for political skirmishes; the ‘traditions lawyers’ do this despite breaking other traditions in the process. Service entities behaving like the governing authority in a hierarchy have sidelined and disenfranchised other service bodies. This is all legalism, which dictates that everyone must shape up by adhering to a 14 MARCH 2021

Members Articles rigid set of laws. Legalistic actions exterminate enthusiasm for AA service through disunity, turning keen, loyal volunteers into disillusioned cynics on the sidelines.

AA structure should be a fair, transparent and inclusive set-up enabling the right people to connect in the best way to be of maximum service. Just how can our fellowship, which has a spiritual foundation and an ethos of brotherhood, love and service, operate optimally when saddled with a legalistic, hierarchy-based structure? We’re all mere humans, so disputes can occur between AA members at a service level on committees, councils and assemblies, between members linked to different service entities, and between members within the national body and other service bodies. To amicably deal with this, the actions of all need to be grounded in respect, grace and goodwill. Thus free from legalism, AA service entities can bring about and take part in principled, win-win decision-making, including encouraging and honouring the minority voice. Legalism is exercising arbitrary power by wielding excessive authority for mean-spirited, partisan political ends. Grace – generosity of spirit – facilitates the mediation of differences and the resolution of problems: it lubricates the machinery of our AA service structure.

Tradition 9 not only refers to the relationships AA groups or service bodies have with individual members, but – as an imperative – it stresses the gracious spirit of service needed in the actions of AA service bodies affecting groups and other AA entities. Legalism means maintaining rules with clenched fists, and a clenched fist can’t receive anything. Grace is receiving or giving a gift with open hands. We need noble hearted volunteers in our organised structure to bring energy, administrative know-how, rational thinking and leadership vision. As sober AA members, we have received God's grace and can now do service by being a helping part of this AA structure under his grace. Having reaped the further rewards of mental and emotional sobriety from embracing our 12 Step program, we’ve become free to allow God to help us serve our life-saving and life-transforming fellowship as caring custodians, benefactors and beneficiaries. Come in with your new broom and please help sweep the place clean!

THE BIG BOOK’S FIRST 164 PAGEs...AT A GLANCE Condensed descriptions of the first eleven chapters, plus the Doctor’s opinion THE DOCTORS OPINION (pages xxiii to xxx) The Doctor’s Opinion was written by Dr William Silkworth, a physician at Charles B. Towns Hospital in New York City which specialised in the treatment of alcoholics.

This section in the Big Book describes alcoholism in terms we can grasp. Bill W was able to understand the alcoholic torture he was suffering from by knowing Dr Silkworth’s opinion. Alcoholics Anonymous would not have happened without this. The alcoholic learns of the exact nature of the disease of alcoholism and how hopeless this condition of mind and body seems to be.

Chapter 1. BILL’S STORY (pages 1 to 16) In this chapter, Bill W tells us what his life became after taking the action that allowed him to live thirty six years without another drink. As we study ‘Bill’s Story’ we see the progression of alcoholism in his life. He tells about the craving and the unmanageability. Bill W found he was powerless because of the allergic reaction he had to alcohol. We learn how Bill W found the hope which resulted in him having a spiritual experience. If we identify, we can be ‘12th Stepped’ by Bill W himself.

Chapter 2. THERE IS A SOLUTION (pages 17 to 29) Knowledge that we alcoholics share a common problem will not, in itself, produce a solution. Chronic alcoholics have a seemingly hopeless state of mind and have lost the power of choice in consuming alcohol: managing the decisions to stop and stay stopped. We can discover a common solution by learning the real truths about our own alcoholism and being open to receive spiritual help. The tools of the AA program such as levelling our pride and self-searching can then be available.

Chapter 3. MORE ABOUT ALCOHOLISM (pages 30 to 43) This chapter teaches us that alcoholism is a permanent condition of mind, body and spirit that will destroy us. Examples are given showing how this baffling, patient, 16 MARCH 2021

Members Articles progressive, incurable disease leads us to the first drink and causes us to drink against our own will. The first step towards recovery is to surrender to the truth and concede our alcoholism. We must clearly understand the exact nature of this disease and absolutely avoid rejection or denial of a spiritual remedy. To solve our problems requires spiritual tools and a program of action.

Chapter 4. WE AGNOSTICS (pages 44 to 57) Principally written by Bill W who, four years before, was a hopeless, agnostic alcoholic. This chapter explains we need a Power greater than ourselves to overcome alcoholism. It states for those of us who have contempt, bias, doubt or disillusionment that we need to be open-minded about spiritual matters. We can believe or be willing to believe in spiritual principles if we start at a simpler level.

With willingness, the revelation may be sudden or we may grow into it more slowly.

Chapter 5. HOW IT WORKS (pages 58 to 71) By the time we get to Chapter Five we have a clear understanding of what the problem is: alcoholism; and what the solution is – God, as we understand Him. Now all we need to know is what we must do to recover from our seemingly hopeless alcoholic state and precisely how we do it. We receive our first set of clear-cut directions in this chapter – the Twelve Steps of Recovery – and we are told how well this program works for those among us who put it to work in their lives.

Chapter 6. INTO ACTION (pages 72 to 88) This chapter is a design for living which gives us the directions, the prayers and the Promises for Step Five through into Step Eleven. We have to complete the housekeeping of our program because we must go to any lengths to achieve victory over alcohol. As we undertake the actions outlined in these pages, we begin to put our lives in order and we grow in having understanding and being efficient in how we live our new sober life. We ask for guidance through prayer and meditation and enjoy a new freedom and a new happiness.

Chapter 7. WORKING WITH OTHERS (pages 89 to 103) This chapter directs us to show other alcoholics precisely how we have recovered; thus we may try to help others lead a happy sober life, one day at a time. We are given instruction on how to ‘sponsor’ the chronic alcoholic into sobriety. We protect our own sobriety and show gratitude for a life filled with peace of mind and real purpose by searching out the still-suffering alcoholic. Working with others, with an attitude of love and service to aid their recovery, is part of our Primary Purpose!

Members Articles Chapter 8. TO WIVES (pages 104 to 121) Bill W was the original author of this chapter, which breaks down the stages of alcoholism into four categories. It acknowledges that the partner of an alcoholic is often unselfish and self-sacrificing, though in a very difficult, stressful situation.

It identifies the problems the loved ones experience as they continue life with the alcoholic. It suggests partners try to understand that the alcoholic is sick and suffering, and try to help by their patience, reasonableness, companionship and love.

Chapter 9. THE FAMILY AFTERWARD (pages 122 to 135) This chapter is for the family of the sober alcoholic who is progressing but still convalescing. Alcoholism is a family disease, and all who care about a suffering alcoholic also suffer. When the drinking ends, all the problems do not. After years of drinking, the highly strained, abnormal conditions of the family unit must undergo readjustment. The alcoholic has discovered that the AA program can solve their problems; but, obstacles to peace, tolerance, kindness, harmony and love remain for the family.

Chapter 10. TO EMPLOYERS (pages 136 to 150) Although this chapter is directed at employers, there are many benefits for the alcoholic who reads it. The main author is Hank P, previously the Executive of a large US corporation. It is an appeal to employers about the different types of alcoholic employees, and asks about their role of salvaging and rehabilitating the sick employee. It reaches out to all employers to see where AA could make a difference, so that talented, worthwhile employees can return to usefulness if given a chance.

Chapter 11. A VISION FOR YOU (pages 151 to 164) The eleventh chapter describes the terror, bewilderment, frustration and despair of the hopeless alcoholic. The miracle of recovery is then revealed. The earliest days of AA, when Bill W met Dr Bob, are thus detailed to show how our Fellowship, once formed, evolved. Once we follow the directions in the Big Book – complete deflation, dependence and guidance from a Higher Power, moral inventory, confession and restitution – the promise of a spiritual awakening awaits, and our real purpose is made possible: to be of maximum service to others.

Stories About The STEPS And TRADITIONS STEP WORK

When I had five years of sobriety, my sponsor, Bill P., asked me to join him at the Desert Pow Wow, which is an AA convention in Palm Desert. I agreed and off I went.

Bill, a marathon runner from the 80s, mentioned that he was going to participate in the 10K run. “Oh, that’s nice,” I replied. When we arrived at the convention, Bill asked me if I would like to join him in the sober run. I was a bit out of shape. I had only brought a pair of hiking boots and I hadn’t run cross-country since I was 17. I told him I didn’t think it was a good idea.

After he pestered me a few more times – and remembering that he was one of the people who put out his hand during one of my first meetings – I conceded. I paid the entry fee. I reluctantly pulled on my Desert Pow Wow t-shirt and tightened my hiking boots. The race began.

Bill, who was 20 years older than me and in his 60s (much to my relief), told me he’d run with me a while until I got used to running again. As I ran those first few tenths of a mile, I hoped I would at least finish the race and not let Bill down because he was one of the people in the program who had more faith in me than I did.

When we made it through the first mile, Bill commended me and reminded me to save my energy because there were more miles ahead. This reminded me of the time Bill told me that my first year in the program was for me and after that first year I needed to concentrate on others.

At two miles, I was surprised to feel pretty damn good about myself. I felt like I was beginning to measure up to my sponsor and I felt I might even be able to finish the race. As I ran, I thought of how far I had come in the program and how my new life was becoming useful to others.

AA Sayings & Traditions At the third mile, I felt sure of myself and a bit cocky. I was secretly pondering getting close to the finish line and smoking “Grandpa Bill” in the final steps.

I thought about how my health had returned thanks to AA and how many people I had helped in sobriety.

But then, at mile four, I hit the wall. Old thoughts and doubts slowly crept in. During my fourth year of sobriety, I remember feeling regret that I never became a Blue Angel pilot. I had wanted to be, and had missed out on 20 years of life because of my alcoholism. During that time, Bill just kept me focused on the Promises and urged me to stop wishing for a better past.

He and others made me realize that self-centeredness was a reason we drank in the first place.

At mile five, I was now full of doubt. I felt myself giving up the idea that I was going to pull ahead of Bill. All I could think of was that the finish line was so close and it would be a miracle if I even finished the race. But I trudged on, step-by-step.

About halfway into mile five, Bill turned to me and said, “I’m going to get my heart rate going a bit and will see you at the finish line,” As Bill pulled ahead of me and got further and further from my sight, I reflected on all the times he had selflessly spent on me and knew it was now my time to do that with someone else.

Dear Son,

A lETTER TO MY SON (I never got to say goodbye)

I know that this is a complete shock to you. Your wife leaving Illawong, with the girls and driving to Wagga to be with her family. Your brother and I are also in shock, but nevertheless I am not surprised at their sudden departure. You have told your wife many times that you would stop drinking and when you started drinking again, I am sure, you would say to yourself, “this time I’ll have it under control.” I have seen your behaviour deteriorate over the years, you always shout or talk in a very loud voice, anybody says anything to you, your standard reply is “Get over it”.

Well, I’m afraid, she has gotten over it, and without saying a word to you or me, she and three traumatised girls have left you. Three girls aged ten, twelve and thirteen years. I never got to say goodbye to my beautiful granddaughters, never got a cuddle or (due to covid) even an elbow bump. They had to leave their home, their friends, their school. They didn’t get to say goodbye to their friends, their teachers or their gymnastics teacher with whom’s help, the girls won gold medals (or gold coloured medals); all came 1st in their divisions of gymnastics.

I know that I, unfortunately, passed on that horrible gene of alcoholism to you. I know that I loved to drink, it made life (I thought) more bearable, more fun and I could talk more easily with people. In reality, I’m a quiet, reserved person. I have had so much help, when for the 2nd time, I went back to AA because once before I had 3 months of not drinking due to being picked up and taken to meetings.

Nobody at the bottle shop or pub would have cared for my 3 little children as the members of AA (who also babysat for me, free of charge) did.

You might say “I don’t want any of that AA crap” but it gave me and my children a decent life, not bringing strangers into the home. My Son, the booze has gotten to you, it controls you. Lurking in the background, saying “drink me, drink me.” It has made life unbearable for your wife and the girls.

You can be proud of yourself for achieving a great work record, working for an Energy company for 2 decades, you are a very skilled handyman. I know that, because you have held on to a job, never had a drink driving charge, that you believe you couldn’t possibly be an alcoholic.

Members Articles “Oh, I’m not one of them..” but from the horse’s mouth, me, your loving mother, YOU have a drinking problem!

Maybe you can stop all by yourself, but that won’t be much fun. You will, if you want, still be able to see your girls, travelling all the way down to Wagga, but there is a hitch, THEY may not want to see you.

You might take them to a movie or to their favourite, Macdonald’s. Might do this or that, but you have lost continuity of your relationship with your daughters.

Unfortunately, your “friend”, Mr Alcohol has seen to that.

Other people can help and guide you, BUT, It’s up to you.

Only you can change you.

Try to hold on to your employment while you can.

At present: you have a job, you have sick leave, you have choices.

Who is going to win the battle for My Son? Is it going to continue to be “King Alcohol”? King Alcohol can and will continue to disintegrate your life. Destroy your life.

I am heartbroken for you, two of my brothers destroyed by alcohol: The first; walking under a train.

And the second; in jail for drug and alcohol misdemeanours.

I am the only one in the family, I believe, to be in remission from my addictive personality, by attending AA. Your wife told me last night she has enrolled the girls in school in Wagga, she has a new job in Wagga. Please do something My Son. There will be a lot of heartache for you in the year ahead.

The life that you thought you had, has now gone, Kaput, finished.

AA Declaration I am responsible, when anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there.

And for that: I am responsible.

Th e Twe l ve Tr a d i t i o n s of Alcoholics Anonymous 1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon AA unity.

2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

3. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or AA as a whole.

5. Each group has but one primary purpose – to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

6. An AA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the AA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every AA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

8. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional, but our service centers may employ special workers 9. AA as such, ought never be organised; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the AA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

PREAMBLE Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are selfsupporting through our own contributions.

AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
