1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

JUNE TOPIC: GETTING SOBER The AA Way

GOING DOWN Coming into AA in my mid-30s, I didn’t think of myself as getting sober young. I was in a depressed state of mind. I felt like my life was pretty much over; certainly the party was over. I’ve come to realize though that my life really only started in sobriety and that I have, God willing, many years left to enjoy.

As a kid, I was always sketching. In college, I always turned in the most creative projects and had professors saying that they couldn’t wait to see what I was going to come up with. I eventually graduated second in my class from art school. But now my body was hurting from over 20 years of alcoholic drinking. And even though I made my living in a creative field, my mind was a blank. Working on Madison Avenue in New York City, I had done well and made good money coming up with great concepts. But as my drinking progressed, my creativity faded and I was having trouble coming up with anything even slightly new and catchy. My plan for pumping up my creativity was to pump up the alcohol. And of course, when I plan, God laughs.

I ended up being escorted out of my office by three security guards one morning after failing to comply with yet another warning about my drinking on the job. I’ll never forget the empty feeling I had when I stepped off the elevator and turned to look at the security guards as the elevator doors closed. They were going back up to work and I was going off to another three years of drinking. I was, as is described in AA literature, unemployable. I went on many interviews with the scent of stale booze seeping from my pores. I can remember trying to convince myself after one interview I had done, that the guy didn’t even need to look at my portfolio because he was so impressed with me. He said meeting me was a pleasure and he’d be getting back in touch soon. I still haven’t heard from him.

Members Articles I finally ended up landing a job in another state making half the money and doing work that was tedious and repetitive. It was the only thing my fried brain could handle at the time. The bills weren’t getting paid and my wife wasn’t able to live the lifestyle she was accustomed to. So she left. I was now young and single and ready to roll, or so I thought. I spent that Thanksgiving drinking alone with my dog, feeling very sorry for myself. That Saturday night I convinced myself I needed to get out and live. I ended up at a party at a house rented by three young guys I knew from my new job. There were kegs of beer and a large punch bowl full of a highly flammable concoction. I knew by this time in my drinking career that I blacked out quickly and usually committed illegal or immoral acts when drinking liquor, so I stationed myself at the kegs.

At the time I felt I had absolutely no social skills without a few drinks in me, so I had primed the pump with a six-pack on the drive there. I even managed to hold my own for a while at the kegs and made some small talk without embarrassing myself with this new much-younger crowd from work. Then the kegs ran dry. The last thing I remember of that night was holding the punch bowl over my head and pouring its contents – booze, ice, glow-in-the-dark bracelets – down my throat and the front of my shirt. My co-workers were kind enough to fill me in on the parts of the night I couldn’t remember when I crawled into work the following Monday. They had managed to get my keys away from me and eventually got me to sleep it off in a heap on the floor. When I came to the next morning I found my keys and snuck out without waking anyone. Not an easy task, since my shoes kept sticking to the punch-glazed floor.

I spent the next several weeks with my head down at work, trying to let time and the all-too-familiar embarrassment pass. Then came the office Christmas party. I convinced myself I could show everyone from work that I could handle my drink and that the house party disaster was just a fluke. I wasn’t going to drink liquor, only beer.

I started with several beers on the drive there and I brought a bottle of vodka that I kept in the trunk for my reward on the drive home. I wore a suit and tie and sipped a beer at the bar with a few of my co-workers. I even managed to chuckle at stories they were still telling about what I’d done at the house party. When I began to feel too uncomfortable, I went out to my car and chugged a beer or two and then went back in to sip at a beer in front of everyone else.

After several hours of this, I thought I had everyone fooled. That’s when I saw a very attractive woman from another department out on the dance floor by herself. I slowly

Members Articles danced up behind her and when she turned around and saw me the look of horror on her face nearly floored me. We both ran off the dance floor, she to her friends, me to hide in the restroom. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I saw what she saw: a red-faced, bloated, sweaty drunk. I got out of there as fast as I could and ran to the solace of my bottle in the trunk. I poured the vodka into a large glass with a very small splash of cranberry juice and drove home, where I planned to lock the doors and be safe from that monster in the mirror. I never made it home that night. I was pulled over by a trooper and spent the night locked up. It was my third DWI and I was facing one to four years in jail time. I got down on my knees in that cell and asked God to help me.

When I was released, I went to my first AA meeting. I thought it was going to be just a bunch of cranky old men waiting to die since there wasn’t anything to live for without booze. Instead, I met many people my age and younger who were laughing and smiling and joking. They took me out to dinner after meetings for coffee and I learned how to talk to people without a drink in me. As I got more comfortable around others, I was able to go on outings with the gang – bowling, shooting pool and visiting comedy clubs. I eventually went to my first Yankees game sober and also went fishing, camping, dancing, hot-air ballooning, skydiving and even dating.

I had thought my life was over when I stopped drinking. Fortunately, it was just the drinking that was over. My life had just begun.

I’ve been sober for 16 years now. I’m in my early 50s and my life has never been better. My creativity slowly came back in sobriety and today I have a design job that I enjoy very much. I play in several softball leagues, live on a lake and enjoy swimming and fishing. I’m in a great relationship with a woman who is not one of us but who just doesn’t drink. And we have a 10-year-old who keeps me running around and helps me stay young and sober STEVE B. Hopewell Junction, N.Y. GRAPEVINE – June 2016

100 QUILTS I used to taste small amounts of wine and alcohol at family dinners and holidays, but I had my first real drink when I was 12. I knew that here was something that could change my life. I also knew I wanted more. Today, I see that I was an instant alcoholic. I seldom threw up or got sick, although I was often hungover and I frequently had blackouts. I was like one of those cheap toys you see in zoo gift shops. You add a little water and wait five minutes. The tiny toy turns into a sea horse or a dinosaur right before your eyes. That was me. Let me drink booze, wait five minutes, and I would turn into an alcoholic only wanting more and more booze.

That first drink started me on a road that lasted the next 40 years. Over that time, I learned how to look good while drinking. I learned how to please others, or at least make them overlook my excessive drinking.

Usually I did not drink at work unless I had a boss who did, which happened occasionally. I managed to have what others called a career, even though I switched jobs and fields several times. I managed to blow through two marriages, but I was also able to come out with three marvelous children. To the outside world, I fooled some of the people lots of the time, and the other people some of the time. But I never fooled myself – ever. I drank because I liked to drink. I liked everything about it. I liked the taste. I liked the effect. I liked the company it brought me and I liked that it helped me escape reality. Alcohol took away my fears and let me live in a world of pretend. It was my solution to living.

Then one day the real world caught up with me. I had lost a job I loved and had expected to have forever. They “downsized” me. I was alone in my three-bedroom condo. My children now had lives of their own and were producing grandchildren. I was over the middle-age hump and realized I was living scared. In one day, I decided I would move south where my oldest child lived and where my first grandchild had started elementary school, even though my son-in-law was heavily into street drugs.

I sold my apartment – also in one day – hired a mover and put everything in storage in the southern city. I temporarily moved in with my daughter’s family. I was going to start over, I thought. It made perfect sense to me at the time.

About four months later, I was struck with a moment of clarity while I was feeding my grandson in his high chair. I was swishing a glass of whiskey on the rocks in one hand and holding a baby spoon in the other., I realized this was how I had raised my own children and I just didn’t want to repeat this with another generation.

Members Articles I walked over to the sink and bid whiskey and ice cubes goodbye. They went splashing down the drain into darkness. That was July 7, 1994, and so far I haven’t had a drink since. It’s a miracle to me. I knew what to do. I had known about AA. I had another child who had found the program eight years earlier and she was still sober. So I called her, then I called AA. I went to a meeting. I cried; I didn’t drink; I got a sponsor. I wasn’t sure I wanted one but I hated feeling alone.

I cried for a long time. I cried for all those years I had hidden my feelings with alcohol.

I had pretended I was alright when I was hurting and terrified inside. AA didn’t care if I cried. They told me everything would be alright if I didn’t drink and went to meetings.

I did that. I started the steps even while I was still crying. It didn’t matter. I could find God while crying. I went to meetings every day. I had nothing else to do. Sometimes I took my grandson with me. He was good and quiet in the meetings. Day by day, things got better. I finally stopped crying. I talked to newcomers like my sponsor told me to do. I became a greeter at meetings. I went out for coffee afterward, which my sponsor also told me to do, even when I felt shy and like an outsider and didn’t know anyone. I soon got to know more of the women and found that I liked them after all.

I was hospitalized briefly for depression, which helped me to get medical help for a condition that I believe I had most of my life but that never was treated properly. No therapist had ever asked me about my drinking. Ever! A couple of years later, I felt like a new person. A weight had been lifted and I could live a free life from the heavy secrets and self-made burdens that I had created. One of my fellow “sisters” in the program urged me to come to her home with a group of other women and learn to quilt. Even though I had sewn years earlier, I had never quilted and didn’t think I could cope with all those tiny squares and mixed up colors. I told her so. She was patient. Eventually, I caved in and agreed to watch. Soon I tried it and was hooked.

Now I have made more than 100 quilts. Quilting has even turned into a business for me. I consider quilting my form of art expression and the work makes me feel proud.

I believe everyone in recovery, men and women alike, should develop a creative outlet. It’s helped me with self-esteem and a sense of self-worth.

I began to feel I wanted to give back, so I became a sponsor. It didn’t always work out so well. Many women I tried to sponsor had done hard drugs and could not relate to someone who only drank alcohol. Some just weren’t ready or didn’t want to do the work. So I got involved in hospitals and institutions work. This work was just right for me. I started taking a regular weekly meeting into a treatment program for men and women who were incarcerated but were scheduled to be released. I have found great reward in holding this meeting. It does as much good for me as it does for them. For most of them, it is the only meeting they get each week.

Members Articles I am able to provide them with Big Books they can keep. I take in Grapevines they can pass around. Each week we either have a speaker or read from AA literature.

Then we go around the room and each person shares. It amazes me the intimate things they tell and the honesty with which they share how much they want to get sober and stay that way. I have recently agreed to become the treatment and special needs co-ordinator for our area in order to organize ways to carry the message on a broad basis across Western Pennsylvania. Many of our districts are rather rural, and it seems they need different ways to reach suffering alcoholics. I know there are AAs out there who want to get active in service this way but don’t know how. I’ve pledged to find them, and together, we will reach out. Taking meetings into treatment centers, jails and hospitals is one of the most rewarding areas of service for this alcoholic.

I guess I could be considered a late-bloomer in terms of getting sober. I’ve learned that you’re never too old to live a joyful life free from alcohol. It is never too late to start living the life God wants me to have and be the person I always wanted to be.

And it’s certainly never too late to help others.

Flying Blind Looking back and down into the darkness, I expected to see the small, dirt runway I had just taken off from. But I couldn’t see it. Panic suddenly struck me. I felt sober and very scared. Had I just come out of a blackout? I wasn’t sure. There was no way I could find the small unlighted runway in all the darkness. The sun would not be up for an hour and a half. I thought to myself, if I can’t land this thing before the sun comes up, I’ll be in big trouble. Maybe I’d better radio the Air Force base control tower and turn myself in. At least I’d stay alive!

Earlier that night I’d been drinking for several hours. When the bar closed, I had walked a mile to the little airport where an old crop duster pilot had taught me to fly two years earlier. Now I had a pilot license and was building up flying time and skills so I could apply for a commercial pilot license. I had checked-out in a larger airplane that the Air Force had given to our aero club because it was no longer being used.

The club made it possible for us mechanics to fly the airplane but not in the way I was flying it that night. My alcoholic thinking had gotten me into real trouble. By the time I had graduated from High School, I drank as often as I could, I’d made very low grades, especially in math. I planned to enlist in the Air Force. But I didn’t realize that my bad grades in high school set me up to being a poor achiever in both military and later civilian jobs. I just wanted out of my boring home town and away from the many school friends of whom I was painfully jealous. They were celebrated sports heroes and dated the popular girls. I was nobody, except when I was drinking and hanging out with “the wrong crowd”.

After Air Force basic training and jet mechanic school, many of my buddies went with me to a pilot-training base near the Rio Grande River just across from Mexico.

Each of us was assigned the job of maintaining one of the 200 airplanes used for pilot training. The daily temperature was usually dangerously hot but my duty time was only from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. Our pass privileges allowed us to be off the base for 18 hours a day and to just “disappear’ on weekends. My buddies and I spent much of our time across the river in Mexico. The minimum drinking age in Texas was 21, but Mexico didn’t appear to have a minimum. My alcoholism flourished.

We began many nights with an inexpensive steak dinner and sampled the many different drinks and other delights of Mexico. We would all climb onto a buggy pulled by a skinny old horse and our drunken laughter and profanity let the whole neighborhood know that another wagonload of “Ugly Americans” was approaching.

Members Articles Archives Corner When I turned 21, I started bar-hopping on the Texas side of the river. My drinking had put me where I was that night in the darkness – all alone up in the almost moonless sky and thinking about a future in a military prison. The lights of the city made the pitch-black ground below me look even blacker. Gaining enough altitude to allow me to dive for a few seconds with the airplane’s landing lights on didn’t reveal much. Once, I thought I was seeing a big highway, but as I approached it with the landing gear down it suddenly became the river! As the sun slowly began to appear on the horizon, my fear of being observed by crop duster pilots reached its maximum. The crop dusters always took off just after sunrise and I knew they would contact the authorities about seeing my plane.

Somehow I did it. As the duster planes took off, I dived the airplane into a nearby patch of tall weeds and sagebrush., hoping no rattlesnakes were around. Soon I was walking back toward my room at the barracks, looking forward to something for my hangover. It would be many years before I’d learn that my drinking adversely affected my thinking, even when I wasn’t drunk, whether I was working on airplanes or flying them. Over the years, my alcoholism advanced. I got a reputation for being a drunk, even as I accumulated 16 years as a mechanic and part-time flight instructor. The company I worked for would not even consider allowing me to become an airline pilot. I felt humiliated and extremely jealous of my friends who were now first officers and captains.

Twelve years of marriage ended in a divorce. Neither she nor I knew anything about alcoholism. The divorce was extremely painful for me. I gave up flying because I thought it had caused me to lose my wife and two young daughters. I did not think alcoholism was my problem. Everyone drank, or so I thought. And I had not yet learned about self-centeredness or about how an alcoholic can sicken his whole family. After the breakup, three months of heavy drinking began. I lived in an apartment near bare of furnishings. I’ll never forget the day the radio played the country and western song, “Hello, Walls.” That was me. I was physically ill from drinking myself to sleep every night. Then in the morning, the first thing I did at my job was to enter the airplane cockpit and put on an oxygen mask.

Twenty-one years later, I was “controlling” my heavy drinking and being careful not to offend any bosses. Some of them had less time with the company than I, but they had passed me by on their way to the top. As retirement neared, I feared not having anything to do but drink. The time had come to ask for help. My sick mind, full of unwarranted fears, kept telling me that my employer would begin proceedings to get rid of me. I guessed it would take them at least two years to fire me. So on AA REVIVER

Member’s Articles my seniority date, with two years left to retirement, I called the employee assistance program. What a wonderful feeling to have the weight of the world fall off my back. Three weeks of outpatient care at a nearby treatment center was a joyful experience. I was “funneled” into AA and I hit the meeting room floor running. At work I was allowed to do my job inside, rather than out in the summer heat or the winter cold. I sat at a bench and performed interesting surgery on airplane radios for the remaining time until my retirement.

All of that happened 23 years ago. Many AA service commitments have greatly helped me to not take that first drink each day. My ex-wife and children are friends now. My turbulent mind has found serenity and I love my fellow members. Occasionally, 10 o’clock morning meetings at my intergroup office seem too early for me. But I usually go a half-hour early and help solve the world’s problems before the meeting begins.

After a great meeting and five cups of good AA coffee, I enjoy shopping on the way back home. Thanks AA, for this wonderful serene life.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD On a remote island near Russia, a member lucks out and finds another alcoholic, whose AA lifeline is the phone.

My job often takes me to places far away. Sometimes these places are distant in miles, and they can also place me in a remote area, far away from my comfort zone.I recently spent eight days on Little Diomede Island, right smack in the middle of the Bering Sea. It is only a bit more than two miles from Russia. There were no AA meetings listed for this small Inupiaq village of 147 residents. I have learned, when travelling to these types of places, to always take some Grapevines and speaker tapes with me so I can stay connected with AA and my Higher Power.

I knew this trip would be a bit stressful, as most of my trips are. My job was to lead a Mexican film group to the border between Alaska and Russia. They wanted to travel by whale boat, interview native people and learn about native subsistence, life and traditions. You might ask how the heck I do a job like this. Believe me, this is the same question I have asked myself more than once. I have learned through practicing the Twelve Steps of AA that if I stay connected to my Higher Power, I will be led to the correct path. Using the principles of the program, I usually find the easier, softer way.

For example, I often ask myself what would be the next right thing for me to do. I get quiet and connect to my Higher Power for direction. Then ideas start popping into my head and the process starts happening. As long as I am doing God’s will, things work out for me. So I found myself sitting here in the Little Diomede School, after just disembarking from an incredible ride on a whale boat from the mainland with thousands of birds circling over our heads. Just then, an Inupiaq man walked in and said hello. We introduced ourselves and then sat and drank coffee for the next hour. Halfway through our visit, he just happened to mention that he’s been sober for more than two years. Thus began a daily chat with my new friend about alcoholism and how we both stay sober a day at a time.

He was able to get sober with the help of AA in Fairbanks, Alaska. And I actually knew the man who was helping him. On this little island, my friend is staying sober AA REVIVER

Members Articles by calling in once a week to an AA conference call on Tuesdays, sponsored by members in Nome, Alaska.

My time on this unique island in the middle of the Bering Sea was magical for my clients and for me. I know for a fact that I would never have had such an experience if I had not been sober. My new friend took us on a four-hour hike to the highest point on the island. As we approached the island’s very top, we both smiled and thanked God for this experience. We both were so grateful to be sober and alive.

I CRIED ALMOST EVERY DAY BY: ANONYMOUS | VICTORVILLE, CALIF. Copyright © The AA Grapevine February 2020 I want to tell you about how I stayed sober and survived the most horrific time of my life with the help of my Higher Power, AA, my sponsor and my fellow AA members.

I’m a long-time, sober member of AA. In the fall, more than four years ago, I got devastating news that my husband of 30 years was murdered in the wee hours of the morning while he was at an ATM. In that moment, my life as I knew it changed forever.

The pain was more than I could handle. I actually wanted God to take my life. Then I realized that this was selfish since I had grandchildren and two grown daughters who were devastated and needed their mother and grandmother. They could not handle any more pain by losing me. One of my daughters was seriously ill and the other was having trouble with drugs and alcohol. Watching my daughters suffer and being powerless over the situation was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with.

Outside help was offered to me, but I decided to stick close to AA and the God of my understanding. While I did eventually seek the help of outside resources, there was very little available to me. I felt like I was the only person going through the reality of having a spouse murdered. I know that my situation is not entirely unique, nevertheless it is not a common thing to go through.

I believe that my Higher Power, the strong foundation I had in AA and taking the Steps with my sponsor are responsible for me staying sober. I prayed daily. I read the Big Book and meditated to the best of my ability. I wrote and shared my feelings with my sponsor and close AA friends and sponsees. I was very diligent in doing this.

I attended AA meetings regularly. I also exercised to take better care of my health.

My feelings were unbearable at times, but I had been taught to “feel the feelings” and not drink over them. My fears often overwhelmed me, so I made a list of my fears, shared them and asked God to remove them and direct my attention to what

Members Articles he would have me be. My grief knew no bounds. I cried most every day. My sponsor and friends were there for me. I sponsored many women. Except for a brief urge here and there, I had no real desire to drink.

It was almost eight months before the police arrested the people responsible for my husband’s murder. My AA friends attended my husband’s memorial service, and provided food and a listening ear any time I needed it. One of my dear friends and back-up sponsor went to court with me and even gave me a Grapevine book called No Matter What, filled with stories by AA members about how they got through tough times sober. Three years later, God gave me a new husband in AA who walked with me through the trial. He was and is a special gift from God and AA. It took more than four years to bring those responsible to justice. During the waiting period, which felt like being in a black tunnel, I worked tirelessly with other AA members who were suffering terrible losses. This helped me cope with my own pain. Porfirio’s Recovery Topics Her Perspectives On Recovery Using the AA Program ‘PRIDE HEADS THE PROCESSION’ This is Part One of a two-part series exploring how we AA members handle pride after getting sober. This part, called ‘Pride heads the procession’, considers pride when it is a defect. The second part, coming in next month’s Reviver, will be covering pride when it’s considered a virtue.

N.B. The ‘pride’ word has two distinctly different definitions: there’s pride the defect (the opposite of ‘humility’) and there’s virtuous pride (the opposite of ‘shame’).

Bill W used the phrase "pride heads the procession" in the book 'Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions' (on page 48) when he wrote about a method for approaching Step 4. When we begin a search for our defects and start writing a list, Bill suggested using the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ as a template. A list with the seven deadly (or ‘cardinal’) sins was articulated by Pope Gregory 1 in the 6th century and, though not mentioned in the Bible, it is based on traditional theological teachings. Pope Gregory gave these ‘Sins' a ranking in their order of increasing severity, and – you guessed it – pride was considered the most serious of them. Why? Because it offends against love the most.

The escalating ‘deadliness’ represented increasing fixation with the self. The pride defect – or sin, or vice, or abuse or excess of natural instincts or passions – heads the procession because pride uniquely leads us into every other vice and most distances us from God’s grace.

The purpose here is not to examine virtuous pride. But, we need some understanding of healthy (or proper) pride as an aid to discernment while we contemplate pride for our 4th Step inventory. If defective pride can be characterised as an unhealthy distortion or corruption of good normal pride, then what actually is healthy pride?

Clinically, pride is a positive, conscious emotion which presents as a feeling, attitude, response or behaviour, and which results from evaluations of the self (i.e. who we are, who we identify with, what we’ve done and/or we’re doing) according to predetermined standards based on perceived high value. Pride is a self-conscious emotion (like shame, guilt and embarrassment), and a justified, proportionate selfAA REVIVER

Members Articles acknowledgement surmised or deduced from self-consideration (always) and from considering and appraising others (sometimes).

If we want more out of sobriety than mere physical abstinence from alcohol then it is beholden on us, and a prerequisite for us, to learn who we genuinely truly are.

Searching for and discovering our character flaws, shortcomings, offences and selfgratifying human passions begins our quest for self- knowledge, mental sobriety and emotional equilibrium. Defects – if you can’t see ‘em, you can’t flee ‘em! We must start by looking at the signs and symptoms of defective pride in our psyche. Unless we explore, we will never understand there’s much more to pride than just having a high opinion of oneself. We start with pride because it is the hardest defect to recognise in ourselves and the hardest to subdue. If we can belt this ‘Alpha defect’ out beyond the cricket ground pickets then we’re given hope that some of our other defects are not unassailable.

Before anything, we really need to know whether pride is some ‘deadliest sin’ in our make-up. If we take a second look at the clinical definition of pride, we need to ask: am I taking too much credit for accomplishments? Are my emotions ‘out of whack’? Do I evaluate myself too flatteringly? Is my self- acknowledgement off beam or unjustified?

Are the conclusions I draw from considering and appraising others flawed and, in particular, slanted my way? Is it possible I am blinded from the truthful answers to these questions because of being afflicted with the self-same defect of pride?

Our virtuous pride begins its fateful descent into the realm of becoming a defect because of the alluring, tempting, familiar comforts of self-centredness and specialness. From these shortcomings spring vanity and selfishness. We become lazy, sloppy and either indifferent or indignant. As a consequence, our vision of reality becomes more obscured and imperfect than ever. Truth, namely self-truth or intellectual fidelity, becomes a casualty. Because our self-justifying house of lies is built on soft sand, all of our thoughts, feelings and behaviours become underpinned by fear. As Bill W wrote, ‘fear is a soul-sickness’; and this fear invites a whole procession of defects in to run amok at our expense. In the depths of affliction, would perhaps a drink make everything seem better? Non, Nein, Biyal (Gadigal), Kāore and Taboo!

Defective pride can be simultaneously focused on the self and also others. On an individual basis we can be too easily impressed with ourselves, leading to a perverted, excessive self-admiration; hence, we will exaggerate our personal value, importance, status or accomplishments, and refuse to acknowledge our limits, faults and failings.

Members Articles With other people we can be pretentious, act superior, have a lack of respect for them and what they do, refuse to acknowledge others’ accomplishments and instead, whenever possible, take credit for their achievements; further, because we illogically believe we are better or more important than those we compare ourselves with, we will put our own desires, urges, wants and whims before the welfare of others and, adding insult to injury, harbour unfair, unwarranted disdain and contempt for them.

No shortcoming camouflages itself more than pride in its variety of defective forms.

The collective 'Alpha defect' of pride has many variations. Some can keep us in a habitual state or condition. Some manifest internally, such as inflated self-esteem, self-importance, conceit, grandiosity, arrogance and condescension. Some are witnessed when we exhibit haughtiness, cockiness, boasting, gloating, selfexaltation or denigrating others. Hubris is a pompous display of promoting oneself as being powerful or important, and includes shaming and ill-treating others.

Vainglory is the pride that blinds, causing us to act in a noticeably foolish way (the term ‘vain’ means futile, as in the expression "in vain"). All of these character traits suggest distorted emotions and an irrational over-estimating of ourselves. None of them is about feeling good; they’re all about us avoiding feeling bad.

The theme of this article is not about how horrible the defect of pride is - our AA literature makes this point quite well (e.g. “Pride, leading to self- justification, and always spurred by conscious or unconscious fears, is the basic breeder of most human difficulties, the chief block to true progress").

Contained here in the preceding paragraphs are two tools; specifically, a warning and a guide. The warning is about the slippery slope down which our good normal pride can imperceptibly slip, into the abyss of defective pride. The guide is actually a technique whereby, for the purposes of Step 4 to Step 7 and then to Step 10, we consider the overall 'procession-heading’ defect of pride via its constituent elements. We dis-unify our pride so we may try eliminating individually those stark, singular defects such as arrogance, bragging, smugness, etc. from our daily sober life. These defects, whenever one or more rears up, are the ideal grist for our Step 7 mill wheel. A final point: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

VALE, RUSS M. Russ, or Rusty, whatever name you knew him by, was truly a legend! He had a total of over 62 years sobriety, broken by a short-lived relapse after the first 20 years.

He first got sober back in 1958, attending Hurstville as his first meeting after being discharged from the Merchant Navy as a chronic alcoholic, and several geographicals later. It was at the Hurstville meeting that he began to help a newcomer called Tom. Tom had been brought to the meeting by his sister Jill, who in time would become Russ’ wife, and a great advocate for AA herself.

Following his bust in late 1978, Russ was admitted to St John of God, Richmond, where he realised that it was only through rigorous honesty that he would experience and maintain good sobriety. Nervous at the thought of discharge the next day, with nowhere to go, he cried out to God for help, and felt a peace come over him that he hadn’t known before, and he fell asleep. As the paperwork for his discharge was being dealt with the next morning – he felt a tap on the shoulder, and there was Peter from Glenorie. He took Russ out on his farm for a few weeks, while Russ got back on his feet. This second go at sobriety was a major turning point for Russ; it was around this time that he invited God to come into his life, and then he began to work tirelessly to help fellow alcoholics, new to sobriety or struggling with their sobriety.

I met him over 30 years ago where he was doing what he loved best: helping other alcoholics. He restarted the Caringbah Unity Group, which still meets at the same location today, and then more recently, in January 2012, he started Menai Steps Recovery Group after a year of praying over it with his wife, Jill. Over the years, he has been involved in countless H&I’s, detox centres, prisons, etc., both in Sydney and down the South Coast. He has organised and held several public meetings – I personally remember the one at Hurstville, and also one at Menai. Russ was always helping people with their sobriety – he leaves behind a great legacy in AA, as well as in other areas of his life. He and Jill would often open their home to give a bed, food, etc., to help alcoholics in early recovery. They worked together as a mighty team – Jill would often babysit young children while Russ took their Mums to meetings.

Russ, in line with what he often quoted, could truly look that man in the mirror full in the eye! He went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday 17th March 2021, in his 94th year! Thanks mate for your great example! ‘Til we meet again!

Steps & Traditions

Stories About The Steps & Traditions DO THEY HAVE TO BE IN THAT ORDER? While recounting my story at a recent meeting, I again became aware that I had not followed the Big Book on my first run through the 12 Steps.

Surely there are some steps which need to be taken in order (it is well-nigh impossible to make amends until we have made our list of people to whom we need to make amends, we can't do Steps 6 & 7 until we have done Step 4 etc.). However, the following worked for me.

Having completed the three "Stop Drinking" Steps in order, I then jumped down to Step 11 to 'improve my conscious contact with God, as I understood Him’. You see, my relationship with my Higher Power suffered greatly (as did all other relationships, morals, etc.) during my downward spiral to the depths of Alcoholism. My relationship with my God had been reduced to making desperate "deals" which I later welched out of. "Dear God please help me out of this mess and I'll never get drunk again". "Dear God please make the court go light on me and I will start saying my prayers like my mum taught me”. I guess we have all done this at some stage of our drinking.

Much like the often quoted story of the driver circling the car park praying, "Dear God help me find a parking spot and I will go to church next Sunday....

Oops don't worry, there is one just here!"

I worked on improving my relationship with my HP before embarking on my first journey through the remaining 12 Steps. I am not saying this is an alternative but merely passing on what worked for me back in the days before Sponsors, Steps meetings and the like.....

AA Declaration I am responsible, when anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there.

And for that: I am responsible.

Th e Twe l ve Tr a d i t i o n s of Alcoholics Anonymous 1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon AA unity.

2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

3. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or AA as a whole.

5. Each group has but one primary purpose – to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

6. An AA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the AA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every AA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

8. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional, but our service centers may employ special workers 9. AA as such, ought never be organised; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the AA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

PREAMBLE Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are selfsupporting through our own contributions.

AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
