8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

The awareness that every AA member has an individual way of working the program permeates the pages of the AA Reviver, and throughout its history has been a forum for the varied and often divergent opinions of AA’s everywhere. Articles are not intended to be statements of AA policy; neither does publication of any article imply endorsement by AA or the AA Reviver.

Its editorial team are primarily accountable to the AA Fellowship as a whole. Within the bounds of friendliness and good taste, the AA Reviver enjoys perfect freedom of speech on all matters directly pertaining to AA. Editorial Hi Members, Our topic for this month is “Meetings”, whether it be “Online” or “Face to face.” Meetings are our life blood. For most of us they are a huge part of our sobriety and our circle of support. Most often, meetings are the beginning of our journey on “the Road of Happy Destiny.”

Current times are very challenging when it comes to meetings, but mercifully we live in an age of advanced communications, and are still able to enjoy our AA meetings. See page nine for some great stories on this subject of meetings.

Also, we are kicking off “AUSSIE STORIES” this month due to big demand - and you won’t be disappointed.

AUSSIE STORY’S...

DONNA R’s STORY “How I Got Step 3.”

Initially Step 3 scared me because I thought that by handing my will and life over to God I was losing part of myself, part of my personality and integral makeup.

But, that’s so not what Step 3 is about. I am still responsible for my actions. I am still me – but it’s the outcome of my actions, fears and worries that I hand to God: all the things that eat away at me I hand over to God. By asking for His help to be the best person I can be, then taking each day and doing what I feel to be ‘the next right thing’, I am doing His will. And, by doing His will He is looking after me by giving me peace in my heart to go on doing the next right thing.

It is a wonderful self-perpetuating cycle; the exact opposite of running on my own will. I know when I’m getting it right because it makes me feel good.

I pray that I can stay close to this step and what it has shown me because, to run on my own will again would be pure torture after realising that there is a better way.

DON W ‘s STORY “I accepted I was an alcoholic who belonged in the rooms of AA.” My name is Don and I am an alcoholic. My home group is Bardwell Park on a Tuesday night. I’m an alcoholic on my say-so, which means I believe from birth I’ve had this incurable disease called alcoholism. I was brought up in a comfortable home where my parents often socialised with their friends over a few drinks. My parents were not alcoholics and everyone had a great, fun-filled time over those few drinks.

I was playing loads of sport, I was attending church and had quite a degree of faith.

From an early age I felt different from others and knew that in fact things were different; like, I was left handed and I had no brothers and sisters. I now know I had the ‘isms’ of alcoholism. There was low self-esteem, not knowing how to properly socially engage with people, and I had all these below-the-surface fears of failure and of what other people thought of me. After turning nineteen I left the family home to attend university but instead went into full-on active alcoholism. Right through 1974 I sabotaged two university enrolments and gave up on my sporting and outdoor pursuits. All I learned about was hanging around bars and smoking dope.

My twentieth year was one big rock bottom. I worked as a farm hand and seasonal fruit picker on rural properties and orchards in central-west NSW. I was unreliable and drank everything I earned; and, it was hard work for the earning. I came back to Sydney and toned down the drinking and dope smoking. Then came a progression of white-collar career positions. But, in each job I was drinking too much every night and fronting up to work late, bleary-headed and absolutely not looking like ‘foreman material’.

Career seeking was too hard so I took a bar job in a big, sprawling, brawling hotel up the hill from Bondi Beach. As one of the staff – i.e. a drunk’s labourer – I also ended up being a very good customer of that pub. I graduated from the bar work to become a spruiker in front of Kings Cross strip clubs. I didn’t work too long in the Cross because the violent nature of door work made my alcoholic drinking risky business. My father came back into my life just after my mid-twenties. We started a business repairing and making canvas goods like semi-trailer tarps. I was

Aussie Stories the business owner by name but our work was in my father’s trade skill set. So, I learnt the trade from him and became quite a skilled-up workaholic.

At 27 I had a big car smash when I was super drunk. I phoned Lifeline and was told over the phone I was an alcoholic and that I belonged in AA. I then went to Mortdale Saturday night ID meeting. A man who seemed very sincere greeted me at the front gate and welcomed me in. I related to every speaker there a little bit – I thought all of them were honest. I accepted I was an alcoholic who belonged in the rooms of AA. Sadly, I didn’t go to meetings and soon picked up a drink. The drinking got worse and I made many bad decisions for the business, like not insuring the premises against fire. I had a factory fire and everything went up in smoke. Like a madman I still ran the business out of the semi-demolished, burnt-out premises, and I drank like a madman around the clock.

A sober alcoholic came into my life and suggested a plan for not drinking through the day and then going to an AA meeting that night. On the evening before, I went to the pub. In that hotel I had a psychic change halfway through a beer, and the obsession + compulsion to drink suddenly disappeared. I didn’t drink the next day and then went to the Dulwich Hill meeting. I heard what I needed to hear. The next morning I summoned up all the courage and self-honesty I could muster, got on my knees and uttered two prayers of help. I asked God that I could somehow live a life without drinking alcohol, and I asked that I could somehow live a life without craving for alcohol. These two prayers have been answered right up to this day!! I haven’t had a drink or felt like one since. But, I date my sobriety from nine months later, on 1 August 1991, after I last smoked marijuana.

I’ve had a very AA-centric recovery – no slackening off or diversions. As a newcomer I got right into AA. Early on I became a member of a Steps group and went to many, many meetings. I’m still doing several meetings a week, and do Steps Three, Six, Seven and Ten on a daily basis. I do some AA service to try to put back what I’ve been blessed with. I am once again a regular church goer and committed to growing along spiritual lines. I have plenty of faith, and I also have faith that AA can work when life seems at its lowest. I love my sober life.

An Alcoholic’s Life is Like A Game of Football.

The thought came to me recently that life’s journey for an alcoholic is like a game of football. Here’s the call: Alcohol has the ball. He runs to the defence. He offloads to Mick, but Mick is crash tackled by Anger with resentment coming in over the top. Boy! That was a hospital pass if I’ve ever seen one. Mick gets to his feet but he’s still groggy.

Alcohol has the ball. He offloads to Mick. Mick runs at Lust. Seems to think this’ll be easy and a bit of fun. Oooops! Lust jumps high and collars Mick around the head.

Mick goes down as Jealousy comes in for a late tackle. Lust and Jealousy receive a caution as Mick gets some smelling salts from the trainer.

Alcohol has the ball. He runs at the defence. Offloads to Mick. Whoa!!! Mick runs straight into Fear, the most ferocious tackler for the defence. Fear smashes Mick into the turf. Oh! This is sickening. Mick is out cold. They’ve called for a stretcher.

Mick is taken from the field for treatment. This may even mean some time in rehabilitation.

Alcohol is replaced by God, the former star of the team, who hasn’t been called on for some time.

Well, he’s back, Folks. Yep, Mick is running back onto the field. Obviously the treatment at half-time did the trick.

Mick gets the ball. God is in support and calling for the ball but Mick goes himself and is brought down by Pride.

Mick gets the ball. God is screaming for it. Mick passes to God. God sidesteps Fear, pushes off Lust, swerves around jealousy and crashes through the gang tackle of Anger, Resentment and Self-Pity. No-one to beat now. But God calls Mick to support.

God passes the ball to Mick, and the unmarked Mick scores between the posts.

Mick gets the ball. God is in support. Mick dummies to God and goes himself.

Whoops! That was a bad idea. Fear had Mick well and truly covered and smashes him into the turf once again. Well, Mick regains his feet but he still looks a bit shaky.

Aussie Stories Mick gets the ball, passes to God. God outstrips the entire defence. Once again God calls Mick to support. God passes the ball to Mick who again scores unopposed between the posts.

So, folks, as you can see, life’s journey for the alcoholic can be like a game of football. Application of the Twelve Steps can defeat character defects. God is always voted ‘Man of the Match’ and Mick (the alcoholic) comes away a winner. Seems he has learned to count on his support, and he hasn’t had a drink today. Yep, Mick counts on his support, but not always. Sometimes he still dummies, goes himself and ends up on the deck, but he doesn’t pick up a drink. He just ‘picks himself up, dusts himself off and starts all over again’. That’s the huge benefit of this program.

That’s life! (For this alcoholic.)

BIG BOOK OF PARROTS & ORNERY CRITTERS Some years ago I suggested that we might need to nail three Verses to the nearest church basement door: 1) That the Big Book and the “Twelve and Twelve” are not holy writ and should not be treated as such 2) That the incoming members of AA are not required to leave their brains at the door, and 3) That the Fellowship is big enough and the program good enough to accommodate oddballs, mavericks and other ornery critters.

My suggestions were ignored. So let me try again with just a little more background.

I’m Australian, with 38 years of sobriety under my belt, and I came into AA because I had been drinking uncontrollably for many years. I needed help for my alcoholism, and I got help.

One of the things that kept me coming back was the simple suggestion that if I didn’t have a drink I couldn’t get drunk, This was pounded into me night after night, as was the message that if I wanted to stay sober I should get to plenty of meetings.

Those messages were supported by the Big Book, the ‘Just for Today’ card and the Serenity Prayer.

The members of my group were not do-gooders trying to convert me to any particular hypothesis or ideology. They did not stop me from airing reservations or criticisms about what I heard at the meetings, and they allowed me freedom to arrive at my own understanding of what might or might not be useful to my own recovery.

In time, I found value in attempting to follow the Twelve Steps.

I wish I could report that meetings are the same today. A lot of them still are, but AA REVIVER

Topic Stories all too often I now encounter what I call the rigid fundamentalists, or zealots, or Big Book parrots. I suspect that some of them may be doing the AA cause more harm than good.

My theory is that we would have more members and more recoveries if we allowed newcomers to absorb AA in their own individual ways. Some will respond favorably to emphasis on sponsorship, the Steps and the idea of structured groups. Many others will run a mile in the other direction if they sense that we are applying pressure to conform.

A WARM WELCOME In 1983, I arrived on the doorstep of a local clubhouse where I was told AA meetings were held. I was 22 years old, fresh out of prison, and had been disowned by my family.

No one wanted me around. My fellow prisoners didn’t like me. Alcoholics and addicts on the street didn’t like me. Rehab counsellors were sick and tired of me. I was at my wit’s end.

A man standing by the door of the clubhouse welcomed me like I was a long lost friend. I was perplexed. What did he want from me?

I was later to find out that all he wanted was for me to experience what he felt when he was new and alone and right out of prison – welcomed.

My sober odyssey took root on that very day, and today – 31 years later – my life is full of excitement.

When I celebrate my sobriety month this year, I’ll be sharing my experience, strength and hope at that very same meeting that gave me this new way of life. I can’t wait to share with the new guys and girls there the hope that is available for them too.

I was in the front row of the club last night when the chairwoman banged the gavel for the meeting to begin. I fist-bumped all the young guys, doing my best to let them know I was glad to see them. Today I love life.

That’s my job today, to give back freely what was given to me. I don’t ever want to become an AA “thief”. I’m so grateful that there was a man standing there by the door when I arrived. Now It’s my turn to be that man.

GLAD I SPOKE UP In 2001, I was interning for the summer in Vermont’s largest city. Like Susan C. in the story “Belittled” (Sept.2013), I was confronted by anti- Catholic bigotry at my noon meeting. Many folks would claim their seat as, “I’m an alcoholic and a recovering Catholic.” Light-hearted chuckles and friendly smiles would follow. I kept feeling like I was not in the right place. At that time, I had only four years sobriety. My parish priest has originally suggested I go to AA, and that led directly to my sobriety.

So I decided to go to another meeting. But after cooling off for a while, I decided to go back to that meeting and share. I said I was grateful that I never heard such antiCatholic bigotry and I would probably not be sober if I had started at that meeting. I shared that I did not feel welcome, and that there is nothing in the Big Book that says anything but good things about religion. I was shaking the whole time.

In 2009, my family and I moved to a neighborhood suburb in that same city, and over the last five years, I’ve only heard one speaker hinting at anti-Catholicism. I don’t know what happened in the intervening years. The meetings seem to be focused on newcomers and sobriety and leaving the particulars of spirituality between each member and their sponsor. This is hope that this can happen in your area.

Unfortunately, you might just have to be the person who speaks up.

LET THEM SPEAK A gentle suggestion for discussion meetings: they are speaker meetings. Our group struggles to direct discussion leaders to read from the literature and briefly share their experiences on the topic. Many leaders feel obligated to share their wisdom and story at length, even with 50+ people in attendance. Also it is not necessary for the leader to speak after each person’s share, for the diversity and richness could be impeded.

When I am leading, I keep my mouth shut, and miraculously, eventually someone in the meeting will share what I was thinking. The Higher Power-driven magic of many people sharing is one of the wonderful things about our program.

TURN IT OFF OK, here’s my two cents: People in meetings are looking at their smartphone screens. Before the meeting starts they look at their phones instead of saying hello to others, especially people they don’t recognize. They look at their phones during the meeting (I’m not counting the ones reading the Big Book or “Twelve & Twelve’ online) and even start texting.

I was in an AA meditation meeting a few Sundays ago and someone was looking at his phone! To me meditation is being in the moment – right here, right now – not somewhere else.

I’m 34 years sober and 69 years old. I own a smartphone and it comes in handy.

But I turn it off before I enter a meeting, find a seat, and say hello to the people around me. We alcoholics tend to be isolators and are addictive by nature. Turning off your phone before you walk into a meeting is a specific corrective for those two tendencies.

MOOCHERS DOWn under AUSTRALIAN BRANCH NOTES NO. 2 NOV 1946 From Sydney, Australia The Australian Main Branch of Alcoholics Anonymous now holds two meetings weekly at its Headquarters, ironically enough a de-licensed public house in Sydney.

These meetings are held on Tuesdays and Fridays, starting at 8 P.M. On Tuesdays we may bring our wives, sweethearts, minister of religion and friends who are interested. Friday is set apart for alcoholics only, except that founders and Mr. Frank Sturge Harty (whom we regard as a sort of Deputy Founder) may attend if they wish. On odd occasions one or more of them may appear, but mostly we are left to ourselves.

On Friday, July 5, there was a large attendance (some 50 or 60 being present). Six or seven were drunk, but no one took much notice of this.

Of later months a certain element has been of some bother to us. They are male members who have been turning up quite regularly - sometimes sober, sometimes not. They move from member to member, getting a cigarette here, a shilling or two there. They never under any circumstances make the slightest attempt to live the 12 Steps, and are, at times, a disorganizing influence at meetings.

Cold Shoulder Works Our founders advised us not to give them money or help them in any way; we first commenced taking this attitude (feeling rather mean about it) on Friday, July 5. At the subsequent meetings not one of them put in an appearance. So it seems they were more interested in supplementing their incomes than in learning how to be dry and happy.

A branch of Alcoholics Anonymous has now been established at Manly (a seaside suburb of Sydney) and another is expected to be established at Katoomba, a mountain town 70 miles west of Sydney. There has for some time been a branch at Barellan in central New South Wales. Another branch may soon be established in Melbourne, capital city of the State of Victoria. Melbourne has a population of 1,200,000 as compared to Sydney's 1,350,000. Sydney is the capital of the State of New South Wales. Further, we are trying to urge the Australian Red Cross Society to establish a branch in Adelaide, capital city (300,000 people) of the State of South Australia.

Porfirio’s Recovery Topics Her Perspectives On Recovery Using the AA Program ‘Defiance’

Defiance is like the little girl in the poem: when it is good, it is very, very good; but when it’s bad, it’s horrid! This article is about the defiance of alcoholics who are either sober or trying to be. The most glorious and admirable forms of defiance have a romantic, heroic flavour. Some instances are when we defy the odds, or we defiantly snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, or when our bold and fearless defiance produces a wonderful outcome. However, the purpose here is to discover truths about offensive defiance; how it can work against us and thwart our sobriety, and how it hurts others. Such defiance is sometimes so poisonous and contrary to self-interest it can take us to Death’s door.

To begin and remain in hope-filled recovery we need the 'HOW' of AA – the essentials of honesty, open-mindedness and willingness. When we’re defiant for whatever reason – where compliance is a must – these indispensable recovery prerequisites melt away like snow on a hot day. In one way or another, defiance undermines all three. What could we most unwisely and recklessly defy? Logic; common sense; authority; good orderly direction; the wisdom of our elders? Make your own list!

Defiance can be described as our refusal to obey or comply with any person, decision, law or authority, and our intention to ignore, oppose, spurn, resist and stand up to any person, decision, law or authority. The AA Big Book tells us the most common defects of alcoholics are selfishness and self-centeredness, and that we can often find ourselves handicapped by obstinacy, sensitiveness, and unreasoning prejudice.

These foibles blend into the perfect concoction of ingredients for the odious defect of defiance to take hold in us.

Ill-purposed defiance is characterised by a dogged, headstrong determination to not change an attitude or position on something in spite of good explainable reasons for doing so. Poorly considered, irrational actions will follow, and real problems will result. Defiance is an outstanding characteristic of alcoholics. Back in our days of active alcoholism, most of us led topsy-turvy lives where wrong was alright and doing right was either wrong or at least useless and avoidable. Thus, our episodes of fierce defiance were either desperately needed for maintaining our insane drinking

Members Articles regime and self-destructive lifestyle, or were otherwise inflicted on our victims with immature, selfish disregard. Mostly our defiant stances, gestures and attitudes made us very difficult to deal with. We could be self-important, abrasive, antagonistic and vengeful. An alcoholic’s mind – especially the part of it responsible for reasoning, judgment and controlling impulses – cannot abandon flawed belief systems and thinking patterns, or accurately assess situations, prior to sobriety the AA way and an embracing of Step 2.

We need to know how much our insubordinate, interfering defiance possessed us prior to sobriety before we can ascertain how much unwelcome defiance remains with us in sobriety: Step 4 unlocks the door to our understanding. Here are some questions to show us warning signs, ranging from little red flags to big red flapping tarpaulins! Are we often angry and too quick to lose our temper? Are we easily annoyed by others? Do we impulsively blame others for mistakes or misbehaviour?

Do we deliberately set out to upset and irritate people? Do we often refuse to comply with requests or directions? Are we regularly fighting against authority figures and holding resentment towards them? As we get older are we becoming increasingly reluctant to listen to anyone’s advice and progressively more single-minded in our actions? Might our acts of defiance suggest a perverse love of getting our own way at whatever cost? Does our defiant behaviour corrode our sane thinking and give people around us hell?

Our AA literature tells us that defiance is a solid and formidable roadblock.

When we encounter the AA program, we learn to distinguish between wilfulness which is synonymous with defiance, and willingness which brings about flexibility and acceptance. When we’re willing to take advice, accept direction and receive constructive criticism, the fallacy of our defiance starts being revealed. We discover our defiance comes from having negative life experiences, deep-rooted mental conflict, and a tendency to overreact. With mental sobriety we become teachable and find out our teachers are everywhere – this means the wisdom of the sages becomes available to us. One of Aesop's fables describes a reed that ‘before the wind lives on, while mighty oaks do fall’. That message – to survive in turbulent times by bending like a reed so as not to break – has been a vital lifeline to many.

What should we do to avoid being annoyingly defiant? We look out for warning signs of bad old defiance habits. We look to our AA program – remember, love and tolerance is our code. We ask ourselves self-searching questions which bring about a levelling of our pride, such as: how important is our defiant viewpoint or posture?

Members Articles Are we being defiant for defects-based, self-serving reasons? Is there some chance we’re wrong? Are we able to be wrong? Most important of all: is our defiance compatible with the purpose of us seeking God’s care when doing our Step 3? We need to know this to find out whether our inner resistance needs breaking down. To combat our defiant nature and make wise decisions, we need the power of prayer.

How to deal with defiant people? Maybe we can follow the examples of others who successfully interact with them. We should adopt a balanced give-and-take attitude, hear them out and maintain a desire to be helpful. However, there are those defiant types we occasionally cross swords with who habitually try to manipulate others for their own wilful desires. Their stubborn, meddling behaviours cause considerable distress, and our decision-making abilities, our emotional health and our overall wellbeing could be at risk. The lesson for us is to not be spurred on by fears, anger, impatience or self-justification. It’s imperative we prioritise what is of genuine importance. We must be self-aware, agreeable and open-minded, while also maintaining our personal standards and code of conduct. We need conciliatory yet assertive communication skills when difficult situations arise. We didn’t get sober to be anyone’s doormat – this means recognising when our boundaries are being encroached on. We need our AA program. Even at our most desperate – if avoidance is not possible – we must never neglect to practice AA principles in our dealings with defiant people.

Life is a balancing act and sometimes choices are confusing. Sometimes the extent and nature of authority is ill-defined and uncertain. Are we to be obedient, obstinate, or obsequious? Resolute and steadfast, or in submission? Will we suffer by giving way to an irresistible force or an immovable object, or will we suffer by trying to resist? We may need to defiantly overcome oppression or expose injustice. Our AA program facilitates awareness, and awareness allows us informed choice. The defect of defiance has three prongs: disobeying or breaching a ‘law’, violating relationships with people, and rebellion against God. Is our defiance the bondage of self for us?

This bedevilling defect must be identified and surrendered, which in so doing means doing precisely the opposite of showing defiance. The key is to achieve a proper relationship with God, because with a faith in Godly reliance comes a subsiding of unreasonable defiance. Two final points: in any contesting of wills, success is not final and failure is not fatal – in AA we learn to give in to win; and, our ultimate goal must be to find and to do God’s will.

Vale/Brian C (Richmond Thursday pm) A Life Well Lived One Day At a Time (A Sober Man) Our fellowship lost a loyal and long serving member and a personal friend and mentor on June 7th this year. Brian C was a member of Richmond Thursday night for all my memory of AA. He served as both Secretary and Treasurer for many years on and off. Brian was 52 years sober at the time of his passing. Not just a member in word, but by his deeds, and the help he gave the newcomer with his catch-cry “keep coming back”.

Brian came to the Hawkesbury from Armidale and was well known in both areas.

Together, we went on many trips to the Easter Nambucca Heads Rally. The messages received from that area are a testament to his standing. Brian served on the Executive of AA Central Office, Croydon for many years in Archives, a position he really enjoyed. He was also an integral part of the AA rally’s we held at St John of God Richmond.

When Brian and his beloved wife Mary (who was a member of the local Alanon group) came to Windsor from Armidale they bought a home on the Terrace, Windsor.

Much to their delight, they found a copy of the Big Book. Brian opened the cover and it was signed by Bill and Louis. Brian said it was a “God job”. The house had been previously owned by a member who helped draft the AA (Australian) Constitution.

Over the years Brian would hold court (my words) on his sunny front verandah to the many members of the fellowship. They came to chat about life, love, fellowship, horse racing, cricket, the West Tigers and a miriade of other subjects. Brian was one who always gave (that precious commodity) his time. Particularly to the newcomer.

But when your time was up, he would tell you to go as he had things to do.

He loved his family and loved the fellowship of AA that “saved his life”. He told me his greatest sadness was the loss of his beloved wife Mary. Many at Brian’s funeral

Members Articles/Vale were at Brian & Mary’s 50th wedding anniversary. One of his great joys was when his son joined the AA fellowship. Brian and others are well known for their one liners….

Brian’s was: “You can leave this room tonight and never drink again and be happy.”

Kevin’s was:” Be willing to be willing” Peter’s was: “Don’t let a mug bring you undone.”

My belief is we should look after our mentors and old timers and make sure they can get to meetings. Maybe drop in from time to time or a simple phone call. This may ward off loneliness they may suffer. Remember, they trod this ground before us.

Brian also believed in Alanon and many of his friends in that fellowship were at Brian’s funeral to pay their respects. Brian loved seeing members he hadn’t seen in a while and he would say: Well, I’m still here and so are you – “It must work”!

In conclusion, Brian was my friend, in and out of the AA fellowship. I will miss him as many will do. Please hold onto and treasure our old timers and mentors. In the Fellowship of the Spirit they live on.

Brian was at my first AA meeting and I was at his last. I hope we meet again the next one, one day.

Finally, on behalf of us all who knew Brian, our sympathy and love go out to Brian’s family whom he so treasured and loved.

Vale/Peter from Glenorie Sadly, a belated Vale for Peter whom the world lost last year. Peter was a no nonsense, quirky kind of man who loved AA, and, if left to his own devices, would sing AA’s praises forever.

A contradiction, (not unusual for AA) he was kind hearted to a fault, yet tough as old boots. He was a man of deeds and would often bring newcomers into his home – feed, cloth, give them a bed and help them financially. One of his favourite quips was: “you can always tell an alcoholic, but you can’t tell them much”. His generosity also included bringing large bunches of flowers from his garden along with large boxes of vegetables from the same source.

He would proudly tell us he was from Peakhurst, a St George man through and through. The man who sponsored Peter was Russ from Oatley. I am told Russ also has passed sadly.

Peter’s loving wife Carol has been a long time member of Alanon. He put a lot of his progress down to her. He would confidently tell us all he had improved about 1% since coming into the fellowship. Personally, I think he had improved one hundred percent.

Like a lot of us,when you wash away the dirt you are left with pure gold. Peter was kind and generous with a heart bigger than himself. He was a very funny man and would have a hall full of people laughing their heads off at some of his shares in the fellowship. I was proud to call him my friend.

He was also a man of integrity and when he said he would do something for you or the group, he did it. Peter always worked very hard to improve himself.

So in conclusion he was a kind, generous man with no frills – what you saw is what you got. A total individual who loved life, loved the Fellowship and loved his family.

To Carol, Andy, Michael and Peter’s extended family – our love,kindness and prayers go out to you.

Peter, we who knew you, loved you…

Steps & Traditions

Stories About The Steps & Traditions PRINCIPLES &THE 12 STEPS

Searching the Internet you will find many versions of the principles of the 12 steps. The one that I use is below along with a short interpretation of each of them from my perspective. This is not meant to suggest there is only one way to interpret the steps. I offer it to you as a jumping off point for your own reflection.

Step 1 Honesty I had to admit that I had problem. That is as simple as it gets.

Step 2 Hope Hearing the stories of others in 12 step meetings I began to think that if this deal could work for them, maybe it could get me out of the hell I was in.

Step 3 Surrender Faith is defined as confidence or trust in something or someone unseen. My faith that this would work for me was shaky to say the least but I just committed to trying it.

Step 4 Courage Courage is acting in spite of fear. I was very fearful of this step but I had decided to try. I found it to be enlightening. It was much more than a list of all the things I had done wrong in my life. It helped me to understand who I was, and how my experiences to that point were affecting me.

Step 5 Integrity Now that I had a better idea of who I was it was time to let others in. This was a chance to be real with the world.

Step 6 Willingness Step 7 When I was getting sober I was advised to use a dictionary to make sure what 24 AUGUST 2021

Steps & Traditions I thought I knew was true. I found that humility is defined as knowing my place in the world. I came to understand that I have many wonderful qualities, as well some characteristics which cause harm to me and others. Suddenly I realized that I could relax. I realized that being human meant that I was flawed and so was everyone else on this planet. Back to step 6 and the willingness and trying to change.

Step 8 Love How does making a list of people I had harmed show love? Simple. It demonstrates empathy and compassion for others in recognizing how I may have harmed them.

Step 9 Responsibility This step suggests that we make amends to those we have harmed. Once again it is about me accepting that I had harmed others. Sometimes I was received well, other time I was told to go to hell. I was taught that this step was not about mending relationships but if they were mended, it is a bonus. The purpose of the step work is for me to alleviate some of the shame and guilt that drove me to drink.

Step 10 Discipline Recovery work is hard. Sometimes it would be so much easier to say fuck it rather than look at my actions. And sometimes I do just that. However, I know that I want to live in a state of contentment and in order to do that I have to try and be right with my fellow humans.

Step 11 Awareness For me this step simply means that I should always try to have empathy for the world I live in and the beings I share it with. And to try to act from a place of compassion for myself and others.

Step 12 Service I know that not everyone believes as I do, but I believe that the program of AA saved my life. I feel an immense sense of duty to try to make sure that the rooms of AA are an inclusive and healthy place for all who need them. However, I do not believe that this is altruism. This is very much a selfish act. I want to feel good about myself.

Being of service in and outside of the fellowship helps me do that.

AA Declaration I am responsible, when anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there.

And for that: I am responsible.

Th e Twe l ve Tr a d i t i o n s of Alcoholics Anonymous 1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon AA unity.

2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

3. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or AA as a whole.

5. Each group has but one primary purpose – to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

6. An AA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the AA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every AA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

8. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional, but our service centers may employ special workers 9. AA as such, ought never be organised; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the AA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

PREAMBLE Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are selfsupporting through our own contributions.

AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
