1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. 4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

The AA Reviver is supported through magazine subscription sales and additional income derived from the sale of AA Reviver items.

The awareness that every AA member has an individual way of working the program permeates the pages of the AA Reviver, and throughout its history has been a forum for the varied and often divergent opinions of AA’s everywhere. Articles are not intended to be statements of AA policy; neither does publication of any article imply endorsement by AA or the AA Reviver.

Its editorial team are primarily accountable to the AA Fellowship as a whole. Within the bounds of friendliness and good taste, the AA Reviver enjoys perfect freedom of speech on all matters directly pertaining to AA. NOVEMBER TOPIC: GRATITUDE A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE

Getting Rich Slowly Hi my name is Terry and I am an alcoholic, recovered but still very much dependant on Alcoholics Anonymous.

It seems a heck of a long time since my first taste of alcohol which would have been when I was about 11 but there was no question about the profound effect, and I had the jump on most as we were living in a hotel at the time. So where most kids were more than happy with a glass of lemonade, I was more than a little unhappy if it wasn’t half full of beer, and didn’t school go swimmingly if I managed to sneak a drink at lunch time!

But the disease of alcoholism came into play very early in the piece causing me to be expelled from college (and there was absolutely no alcohol available). That then set up a trip from Lismore to Sydney completely on my own at just 17 and quickly became lost and terribly lonely. It was inevitable that I would quickly end up behind the bar long before legal age trying to stifle the hurt and pain knowing the cold amber fluid would make life wonderful again.

And so it quickly became a daily routine for the next sixteen years and the only change was the time and location. The slide was quick and looking back I must have spent at least 13 of those years trying to turn it around. It took it’s toll in every area and the person who came to Sydney with the world at his feet had degenerated into a shivering shaking wreck hell-bent on suicide.

But the climb back in recovery was swift also once I bit the bullet and put myself into an A.A. meeting. It was a chance meeting with a gifted psychologist who carefully suggested alcohol may be the only ingredient causing my physical, mental and spiritual collapse. I am enormously indebted to her insight and knowledge as well as a suggestion to try A.A. because after only 3 days I was up to step 3.

Topic Stories After so closely identifying I instinctively knew that after just one week – I was at home with these people and this is my best shot at getting well - pass it up and I’m a goner, and I still hold with that today. I was very lucky that when I came in, A.A. was going through a purple patch, there was a huge entry of other “newies” and I quickly became friends with quite a lot of strong sober members. If they provided the supper I provided the transport and that worked well, and I was on the phone up to sixteen times a day.

The first two years in A.A. were an exciting time making life-long friendships, just surrounding myself with the fellowship on an exciting journey of discovery. I was really moved by the stories in the June Reviver from the “Friends of Paddo” as I was part of that era but not exactly part of the group. But I loved seeing them all at other groups, be it Randwick, Newtown, Bondi Junction or Kings Cross and the wonderful gatherings somewhere after.

After stints as secretary at Dulwich Hill and Guildford I bobbed up at meetings all over Sydney, but eventually stuck to groups in the Bankstown area where some very close friends reside. Just over a year ago now I believe it was God’s will for me and my family to come back home and that has been another area of growth, discovery and emotional commitment. Mum, whose health is failing, was over the moon at the news as it was she who stuck by me and prayed during the worst years but also realized A.A. up here wasn’t strong enough back then.

Topic Stories It was a big decision but the right one, we have a new midday meeting that is going really well, I’m self employed also dabbling in two new ventures, have a lovely lifestyle and feel so very contented.

In 1978 I was sitting in a seat at a convention at the University of Christchurch and the speaker was saying that he was 18 years sober but it felt like only yesterday that he came in and that he needed A.A. as much now as then. Now that’s a bit hard to swallow when you have only been sober 21 months. But later on I thought about it and made it a goal to shoot for and to see if I can say that – and that time is now.

Sobriety can be fantastic; If you get to as many rallies, conventions, workshops etc. in the early years, that’s when you really cement your place for good and stick with the spiritual winners.

I’m not making any money here but a chap I was buying wood off said Terry you have a rich look about you, little did he realise that our riches are nothing to do with money or material benefits.

Grateful . . . Gratitude. . . I owe it all to AA . . .

I’d Be Dead by Now! You hear this and much more at every AA meeting.

When I came into AA, it was suggested that we put the price of a schooner in the collection bag. Today the price of a schooner is $4 and a coffee between $3 and $5.

The hall, if your group is paying it’s way as per the Seventh Tradition, is at least $15.

A free Reviver for the newcomer, say one a fortnight, equals $6.

But when it’s time for contributions, the message to the money-hand isn’t one of gratitude. I count the 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces -- I hear the words BUT I don’t see the ACTION It really shouldn’t surprise me because last week we were doing Step 7 and Tradition 7.

Blow the dust of your 12 and 12 and go to Tradition 7. Bill tells us the story better than me, the story is still the same ... show your GRAIITUDE with $$$$$$ as well as words.

And if you’re really GRATEFUL, on your AA Birthday as an OSM told me, multiply your donation by the number of years you’re sober.

Gratitude and Rewards

My name is Daniel, and I am an alcoholic.

I am in my 12th year of recovery, and I am now reaping some amazing rewards that my sober life has given me. Today I can say that I have a 5-year-old boy who has never seen me drink. That’s what gratitude means to me!

Since I have been sober my life has continually gotten better and better. I put this down to two things: I have more acceptance about my disease and of people, places and things. And I have an increased reliance on a Higher Power which I choose to call God. I found the doors of AA by accident after following my sister into a meeting one Friday evening, and I have never had a drink since.

I didn’t even know what an alcoholic was, and I certainly did not think I had a problem (everyone knew I drank like I did). I just had a few problems with the world, people etc etc.

At that first meeting when I was asked to share, I identified as an alcoholic even though I didn’t really feel this to be true; well certainly not a real alcoholic anyway!

TopicArticles Stories Members I attended meetings every day for the first few months, and I did not take that first drink. AA was working. AA was easy. I was on a pink cloud.

But God had different plans for me, God beat me. I had reached a turning point; I knew I couldn’t live with alcohol or without alcohol – I was humbled. I felt worse now that I wasn’t drinking! I was going mad!

Boxing Day 1998 I was seriously contemplating committing suicide, but one thought came to me, maybe I was a real alcoholic, maybe those alcoholics are telling the truth.

I have never felt that way since, and God willing, I never will. I admitted I was powerless over alcohol, that my life had become unmanageable.

Today, I know that if I continue to do what I have done for the past years, I will continue to get what I am getting, a life without alcohol and a life that is happy, joyous and free. We all know that life on life’s terms is not easy, but since that Boxing Day every day has been an improvement.

Today, I have an increased understanding about the Traditions and the need for AA to keep the message pure and simple, the message that was handed to me in pristine condition by some hard but very loving “old timers”.

With treatment centres taking in newcomers and many of them coming into AA but identifying as “other than”, I feel the need more than ever for my group to stick to its primary purpose and to inform with love and tolerance the full meaning of our singleness of purpose, and how important these traditions are for our continued survival.

If I was handed a different message, I would not be sober or alive today.

Happiness with a new driver The other night I had a dream. It was not the first I have had since sobering up. In the early months there were those terrible alcoholic nightmares, but lately those have disappeared.

This dream was different in that I was sober enough. I was in an automobile rushing down a steep hill. To my horror, I suddenly discovered that the brakes wouldn’t work at all. It seemed to me that I had known for some time that the brakes were gradually getting worse. Now they were absolutely useless. At every cross street there were red traffic lights, but I was helpless to obey them. Street cars and trucks passed miraculously in front of me. I was terrified. Here and there were policeman holding up their hands and there was not a thing I could do about it.

Ahead of me I could see a solid brick wall and I knew beyond doubt that I was going to crash into it. Suddenly I woke up shaking, sweating and my heart was pounding.

It reminded me of other times when I woke up in that condition or worse. I lay awake waiting for sleep to return and my mind wandered, half awake.

How like my drinking days was that car ride. My life, like the car, was unmanageable.

I was powerless to use the brakes that had worked for so many years, but were gradually becoming less efficient. Alcohol had been the brake I used to control my state of mind, until it too became as useless as other brakes. In my dream I was saved from complete destruction by suddenly awaking. In real life I was saved from complete destruction. How? 12 November 2021

Topic Stories I admitted that the car was unmanageable, that as a driver I was completely powerless over the brakes. But I came to believe that I could get another driver who would give me a safe ride to the destination of happiness that I wanted so much. All I had to do was to make a decision to get out from behind the wheel, climb into the back seat and take it easy.

At first my new Driver was strange to me. I had heard that He was pretty good behind the wheel but I didn’t know because I had never ridden with Him before. I have learned one or two things about this driver. For instance He isn’t very fond of back-seat drivers. Sometimes I tell Him when we are coming to a fork in the road and which one to take, but He pays no attention.

I can ask Him to turn right or left, except I have noticed that He won’t turn left.

When we pass the cross-road on the left I see why. It’s always the same road and it’s the one in the dream. Anytime I want to make a right turn, however, He’s willing.

Sometimes the Driver goes along too slowly to my way of thinking, but His pace is nice and steady and I must admit we cover the ground in better time.

There is only one thing I have to do for the Driver. Once in a while the car stops and I can feel the Driver looking at me. Out the window I see an old lady trying to cross the street, or a little boy with a broken toy, or a drunk lying in the gutter. If I am lazy, l don’t let on I see these things and the sun doesn’t shine and it is raining and dark.

It must be dark for the Driver too, because He hits all the bumps and holes and I’m afraid He’ll run off the road and leave me to my fate. Up till now He hasn’t though.

In a while He stops again, right back in the same spot where we stopped before.

This time I jump out and help the old lady across the street, or fix the kid’s toy, or help the drunk to his feet. Now the road is smoother and the sun is shining again. I can’t afford to let this happen too often. One of these days He might leave me and I will be to blame.

I can look at the road map whenever I want and see the route we are following. It’s marked the Twelve Steps of AA. It looks to me as if I’d better do what the Driver wants, because my driver’s license hasn’t been suspended. It’s been cancelled for life.

Her Perspectives On Recovery Using the AA Program PR OFFERING - CULTIVATING A GRATEFUL HEART Most folks are as grateful as they make up their minds to be, to coin a phrase; there’s no such thing as being reluctantly or begrudgingly grateful. In our AA literature Bill W wrote “.. gratitude for blessings received and a willingness to try for better things tomorrow will be the permanent assets we shall seek.” Cultivating and building our sense of gratitude gives us a boost in happiness, awareness of the beauty life offers, emotional maturity and a mind at peace.

Gratitude arises when we receive or experience something given to us, firstly, and then grasp that whatever is given to us happens to be something of value. It has to be valuable and it has to be a real gift, whether it’s material or something less tangible. Being the recipient of that which is valuable and freely given should bring about a surge of gratitude in our hearts.

Of course some of us have a more grateful disposition than others.

There are a few cynical types around who know the price of everything but the value of nothing. Also, there are people of unstable and irrational temperament, or of stunted emotional sobriety, whose egos and character defects deny them the fruits of gratitude. As practicing alcoholics we spent too much time being out of our senses and leading a selfharming, toxic lifestyle to have known how to be genuinely grateful or really understand what to be grateful about. How grateful were we for whatever happened around us or to us in blackouts? Was there misplaced, undeserved gratitude back then for any of the enablers, users and opportunists who wheedled their way into our scene and under our guard?

Let’s think scenarios! What horrendous way of life could hypothetically await any single soul due to the accident of their birth? How about being born under the scorching equatorial sun of a third-world refugee camp to drink contaminated water and eat scraps, or being born to lose limbs from an exploding landmine in the midst of an unholy desert civil war (noting there’s absolutely nothing civil about a civil war)? Even living primitively without the availability of anaesthetics or, say, in first-world Australia being born with severe congenital disabilities; presumably this wouldn’t give rise to much gratitude? Yet, even some such person being PEG fed can hopefully be grateful for their healthy, safe living environment, their nutritious food, and the ‘person-centred’ support workers assisting the feeding and giving care.

What happened to us is we were born with a destructive, psycho-biological malady called the disease of alcoholism. This disease wants us dead, but it’ll settle for us rip-roaring drunk.

If we could ever have had a choice in the matter, we may think being alcoholic is preferable to the scenarios previously described. But! How about considering being locked away wetbrained in some bone-achingly lonely, white-walled confinement space suffering Korsakoff syndrome? Or inflicting gory death on a whole family, perhaps our own, whilst driving crazy drunk? These can be our own versions of Hell on Earth – seemingly nothing to be too grateful for, you’d think.

How do we cultivate a grateful heart? We become AA focused, we clear away the wreckage of our past and embrace the 12 Step program of AA as if our life depended upon it – which in fact, it does! Then, with all the help available we summon up the mighty virtue of willingness in three vital areas, as below.

1) Willingness to find truth: We: – • Expose ourselves to truth – for example, by attending meetings and through sponsorship – specifically to gain knowledge and activate a memory of past experiences that bring about gratitude (it’s us being restored to truthfulness, a bit like Step 2) • ‘Let Go’ of gratitude suffocation or gratitude apportioning, and ‘Let God’ by trusting that it is only God who can fill up our hearts with gratitude (the principle of Step 3) • Write a gratitude inventory (Step 4 on gratitude) • Become entirely ready to acquire a grateful heart (like Step 6). After our morning Step 3, the perfect way of seeking relief from ungratefulness or any other defect is firstly to pray the following three must-do prayers, in this order: we pray for humility, then for gratitude, and then for honesty (but don’t stop there – more prayer requests for blessings should follow) • Express gratitude and undertake actions such as writing ‘thank you’ notes which intimate our gratitude (with a nod in the direction of Steps 8 & 9) • Count our blessings (in a manner similar to doing the first half of Step 10) 2) Willingness to grow in spiritual strength: Truth, trust and gratitude are intertwined elements that collectively resonate in our soul. If we have trust that God can rescue us in our times of trouble then He will rescue us. The price to pay is not a sacrifice of flesh and blood, but instead our faithful expression of acknowledgement, appreciation and thankfulness. As such, we should humble ourselves and with the joy of wonder say the world’s most under-used prayer: “Thanks be to God”.

Members Articles 3) Willingness to practice gratitude in all my affairs: We should be marvelling in disbelief that our lives are so incredibly better than back in those horrible, bad old days. How could we not be grateful for such a turnaround? Willingness; or what? Insanity?

Is there a technique for living gratefully on a daily basis for relief as we find ourselves confronted by life? Yes, and it’s as simple as A, B, C! We ‘Stop’; ‘Look’; and ‘Do’, either to go forth if appropriate or move on if not. As follows: A) We need to stop rushing through life missing opportunities for growth; we simply stop being active and busy for several short moments in time, and take these moments of stillness to pause and reflect.

B) We need to look and be aware, and to accurately interpret all information coming via the senses. Only now, with straight thinking, self-honesty and genuine humility, is it possible to value the riches given to us.

C) We must do something because gratitude belongs in the now! Try saying “thank you” to a helpful person or giving them an understanding nod. Only when we acknowledge and appraise the gift of the moment and it’s value in the moment can we have our hearts open in gratitude, appreciate life and put efforts into helping others. Making the most of the moment, emotionally and spiritually, propels us to use our moments wisely, selflessly and with gracious intent.

To conclude, here are two quotations. Harris K authored ‘Growing Up All Over Again’ in the Big Book 3rd Edition and wrote: “My gratitude to AA grows deeper each day I am sober.”

Eartha Kitt, the American singer, dancer and actress, suffered a frighteningly abusive upbringing but had this to say: “I have used all the manure that has been thrown on me as fertilizer to make me stronger.” The point is about converting negatives into positives. There is always something positive in every negative, even if it’s only that we were tough enough to survive. It’s a tall order to be grateful all the time. But the purest and best pathway to happiness is found by being prepared to be grateful to God for everything – which means everything – that happens to us. Whatever seeming calamity or disaster befalls us, if we thank and praise God for it then, in a way far beyond our powers of understanding, it turns into our blessing, paradoxically. This is the true Law of Attraction – we actually attract what we want when we are deeply grateful for what we already have!

Is it OK to Use Non-Conference Approved Literature in Meetings?

I don’t know who in hell came up with the “Only A.A. Approved Material” dictum … but occasionally we have a “bleeding deacon” who is so afraid for his/her own sobriety, that any new or “outside” information or inspiration brought to group might upset his/her tenuous hold on reality or sobriety, and then proceeds to make an ass of themselves in meetings insisting that “Only A.A. Conference Approved” material be brought before the group.

Hehhh!!, as if some of the spoutings of members bears the “A.A. Conference Approved” stamp. The ONLY reason the “This is A.A. General Service Conference-approved literature” is imprinted on AA literature is to replace the Circle Triangle logo, long since removed as the result of potential ill-advised lawsuits, to indicate that the material is copyright by Alcoholics Anonymous General Service Office and published by AA-GSO. The Term “Conference-approved” describes written or audio-visual material approved by the General Service Conference for publication by GSO. This process assures that everything in such literature is in accord with AA principles. Conference-approved material always deals with the recovery program of Alcoholics Anonymous or with information about the AA Fellowship.

The term has no relation to material not published by GSO. IT DOES NOT IMPLY CONFERENCE DISAPPROVAL of other material about AA. A great deal of literature helpful to alcoholics is published by others, and AA does not try to tell any individual members what he or she may or may not read.

To quote from the Big Book …Page 565 …

Tradition 4, Long Form … With respect to its own affairs, each A.A. Group should be responsible to no other authority than its own conscience. But when its plans concern the welfare of neighbouring groups also, those groups ought to be consulted. And no group, regional committee, or individual should ever take any action that might greatly affect A.A. as a whole without conferring with the trustees of the General Service Board. On such issues our common welfare is paramount.

Members Articles Read the rest of the long form Traditions … nowhere in them is there any authority to make a dictum to a group … they are free to follow their conscience as a spiritual entity having but one primary purpose — that of carrying its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

To quote from Page 164 …

“Our book is meant to be suggestive only. We realize we know only a little. God will constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask Him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick. The answer will come if your own house is in order. But obviously you cannot transmit something you haven’t got. See to it that your relationship with Him is right, and great events will come to pass for you and countless others. This is the Great Fact for us.”

The above and the 12 Steps are all the instructions needed.

The charts on the wall of the 12 Steps and the Short Form of the Traditions give us, in 472 words or less, a total and complete philosophy for successful sobriety and life, Happy, Joyous and Free. All else of whatever nature, whether “A.A Conference Approved” or not, is merely by way of explanation.

All the problems in the world today are the result of the “Theologians” “the Bleeding Deacons,” “the Inerrantists” generating the inerrantist nonsense that “only our way is right”… in religions, in civil, secular, and fraternal groups, in politics and government, and in A.A. Of course, if a true group conscience is reached by consensus, not bird-dogged and browbeaten by some heavy-handed individual or clique, the theologians and bleeding deacons are usually left behind … and if that true group conscience says “only A.A. GSC approved material” will be used by the group, then so be it, the voice of God has spoken.

Early A.A. groups and many today use(d) all sorts of aids and books to carry the message of the 12 Steps of A.A. for the recovery of the sick alcoholic … everything from Varieties of Religious Experience by James, The Sermon on the Mount by Fox, the various Hazelden books and others, and even to the various scriptures, i.e. the Bible, the Torah, etc, (After all is said and done, it was from the understanding that Bill had of these, especially “The General Epistle of James”, that the 12 steps came into being.), to aid the individual and group members in understanding the tenets, the principles and ideals, of our basic text, Alcoholics Anonymous, The Big Book, to which we should adhere … and the understandings given in 18 November 2021

Members Articles all the various A.A. published literature, especially A.A. Comes of Age and the other histories of A.A. The “Only A.A. Approved” thing smacks of what was happening in A.A. a long time back when long lists of rules were formulated out of fear that the then struggling members might become “contaminated” by those who did not conform to their sensibilities … and resulted in Rule 62 …”Don’t take yourself too seriously” … Remember, always, who is in charge … it isn’t any one of us … K.I.S.S. I, myself, will use any damn thing I can lay my hands on to reach through to a sick alcoholic right down where he lives, that will give him the spiritual understanding and connection available in the many non-AA resources, so that he can learn to practice and live the 12 Steps in his life in all his affairs and stay sober a day at a time.

Love and Peace, Barefoot *Barefoot’s World. Website created by the legendary Barefoot Bob Hardison (1933-2009; sobriety date, Feb. 28th, 1974). A truly remarkable free spirit, he embraced all forms of spirituality and, one commandment in life: “Harm no one, then do what thou wilt.” And his philosophy of life includes: “Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Do the next indicated right thing.” There was more varied AA material at this site than you can shake a stick at!

Unfortunately, the site has apparently closed since his death.

OBSTACLES TO GRATITUDE “I’m grateful to be sober, and I’m grateful to be grateful.” Grateful to be grateful? You bet! For me to have this kind of gratitude means I need to put some serious work into recognising and removing any obstacles to it. Here’s a list of seven obstacles to me becoming grateful and staying that way: 1) Amnesia I suffered amnesia when excessive alcohol consumption gave me memory loss.

Alcohol can disrupt or block my ability to form memories of facts and events when I get drunk. I used to have ‘blackouts’, which are episodes of alcohol-induced amnesia while drinking. Without memory there can be no healing because I won’t rightly know just how grateful I should be for unremembered protection, favours, blessings, benefits and benefactors. Self-awareness lies at the core of me experiencing gratitude, and listening to AA members reminds me of things to be grateful for.

2) Arrogance & Pride If I assume and take it for granted I’m better than others then it will mean I’ve forgotten the times of receiving God’s grace which protected and strengthened me.

I’ll end up wallowing in miserable ingratitude. Arrogant behaviours and haughty pride will prevent me realising what a profound blessing it is to be alive, sober, contented and safe. My unwarranted pride must be overcome through Step 4, followed by Step 5 with my sponsor, and then regularly practicing Steps 6, 7 and 10. Gratitude is impossible without humility and self-knowledge.

3) Conceit & Vanity My sobriety was hard won. But, I mustn’t deceive my heart by vainly imagining that my blessings came from my own superior wisdom and virtue. The greatest reward for my sobriety is freedom, which means freedom from the indulgences of conceit and vanity. Both these defects emphasise separateness and distinction from others.

Because I am a person who needs people, I can’t presume superiority over anyone.

If my happiness depends on me admiring myself I’ll 100% never have gratitude – I must cultivate a sense of oneness with life and my fellows.

4) Entitlement Feeling entitled means I have an exaggerated sense of significance and deservingness. This shows up as a need for admiration and approval. People with a strong sense of entitlement have unreasonable expectations and believe they deserve special treatment and special favours. If I believe the universe owes me everything, why should I be grateful for it? To avoid having entitlement I need honest self-reflection, a dose of humility and a recognition that life owes me nothing. I must respect, value and care about others, and practice compassion towards them.

5) Resentment Resentments arise after someone wrongs, attacks, cheats or hurts us. Resentment is a poison not just for others, but for me. Grudges and resentments are powerful barriers to gratitude. I hate having feelings of injustice, unfairness and victimhood, and desires to retaliate. Vengeful resentment must be replaced by thankfulness. I can’t be simultaneously grateful and resentful. Can I be free of self-condemnation and possibly look at those who arouse resentment as teachers and guides?

Humility and forgiveness are essential for replacing resentment with understanding, kindness, and a sense of detachment and acceptance.

6) Self-centredness Self-centredness and self-importance are all about how I feel and whether I’m pleased, looked after and appreciated. Self-absorbed people need to satisfy their own self-seeking motives and think that by expecting everything and owing nothing they have no reason to feel thankful. Aiming for humility is a key to swapping selfcentredness with gratitude because it requires me being interested in others. In humility I become aware of my limitations and my need to rely on people. If I’m humble I can acknowledge that life is a gift worth being grateful for.

7) Self-pity Some people feel worry, disappointment, frustration, anxiety, shame and more, and become so negative they see absolutely no hope. How can I know if I’m like that and if my self-pity is justified? Am I restored to sanity? I need Step 2 of the AA program. My circumstances mightn’t be as bad as I think. Paying attention to life's positives trains me to see more of them. My sponsor told me the antidote to self-pity is gratitude, and gratitude is built on knowing the truth about how good life is now.

It took me a bit of time in early sobriety after the fog lifted before realising my own recovery and wellbeing were worth being grateful about. But my feelings of gratitude couldn’t become consistent until I started using my AA program to clear away all the obstacles. Now with quite a few years of continuous sobriety, I live an untroubled life where being happy day-to-day is linked to the blessings of gratitude. Happiness won’t always make me grateful, but having gratitude will make me happy.

News and Notes In A.A. November is Gratitude Month From the General Service Office of A.A. For many decades now, we in the Fellowship have formally carved out from the calendar the month of November as a time to express our collective gratitude for our individual sobriety. Interestingly, no one is exactly sure why that month was originally chosen, though its connection with Thanksgiving seems obvious. A.A. co-founder, Bill W., thought for a while that his Sobriety had begun in November, but later calculations established the date of his new beginnings as December 11.

Misty origins notwithstanding, Gratitude Month has, since the 1940s, been November and our shared thankfulness over the years has taken many forms and will continue to do so as our membership widens.

The General Service Board began giving small gratitude dinners in the 1940s.

These were pre-cursors to the much larger Gratitude Luncheons that were orchestrated during the 1960s as a Public Information effort of G.S.O. A.A. Traditions were the undeniable anchor of our new sober life; Bill W. thought when he wrote, "What then could be more appropriate than to set aside Thanks giving week for discussion of the practical and spiritual values to be discovered in our Traditions?"

The Traditions, he wrote in November 1949, ''are a distillate of our experience of living and working together. They apply the spirit of the Twelve recovery Steps to our group life and security." (The Language of the Heart, p. 96) The first sealed and approved official recognition of an A.A. "Gratitude Week," to be specifically designated to coincide with Thanksgiving week, dates back to 1956.

That year, at the Sixth General Service Conference, delegates approved a motion to that effect, stipulating that "this action be noted in the annual pre-Thanksgiving appeals to the groups for funds to help support A.A.'s worldwide service.

Carrying the message, expressing gratitude, as well as wanting to make a gesture of appreciation for the numerous published articles, books, and radio and TV interviews relating to A.A. that year, were what motivated a number of Gratitude Luncheons. These were held, always in November, during the 1960s at New York City's Roosevelt Hotel - where, incidentally, members of the media who might care

Archives Corner to have a drink, were assured, in the invitation by General Service Board chairman (nonalcoholic) Dr. john L. Norris, that “cocktails will be served at 12:15 in the Library, and the luncheon will end promptly at 2:00p.m."

Well-attended functions, these luncheons drew a sizeable, wide-ranging representation from the media, and served a double purpose: to thank the writers and commentators who attended for their contributions to A.A. in the preceding year and to, in the words of a G.S.O. memo written at the time, "advance A.A.'s public relations by bringing editors, publishers, writers and broadcasters in personal contact with sources of reliable information on the movement." A typical list of invitees to the 1965 luncheon, who had published articles and books on the Fellowship were from The New York Times, Medical World News, McCall's Magazine, Macmillan Publishing Company, The Christian Science Monitor, and many other news and publishing organizations.

Bill W. always addressed the gatherings, as did Dr. Norris, and, in addition to a question and answer period at the end of the proceedings, there was always plenty of A.A. literature available for the guests to take along.

In 1965, Bill sent an autographed copy of the newly-released A.A. Comes of Age to each guest.

Although those who came to the luncheons found them helpful and informative, the board thought they were too expensive a way to say thank you, when a letter from Bill, after an article or TV production was completed, would have been enough.

Others voiced the opinion that more cooperation offered on articles or radio and TV spots might have been more helpful. In any event, the luncheons were discontinued in 1968.

Gratitude. We all know it serves us best when it's kept alive, in our individual lives and in our group conscience. Realizing this, countless A.A. groups over the years have used the month of November to open the door of gratitude even wider.

It’s a sure way of insuring a continued healthy sobriety, group unity, and to avoid complacency and stagnation.

Many groups observe Gratitude Month by holding Traditions meetings and taking up special contributions to the General Service Office for A.A. services worldwide.

This is an opportunity for all A.A.s to think of new and expanding ways to express and share their gratitude. For example, groups could hold topic meetings during the month on the power and different faces of gratitude: “How Grateful Are We?”; “Gratitude is not Passive”; “Giving it Away.”

Archives Corner How about trying something new- something your group has never done before, which will make the members' gratitude more tangible and real? Traditions meetings, of course, always bring home to us all over again the richness of our A.A. heritage, strengthening not only our gratitude but the sobriety of A.A.s, old and new.

In deepening our appreciation of A.A.'s Traditions during Thanksgiving week, Bill wrote, "We could thus reinforce our faith in the future by these prudent works; we could show that we deserve to go on receiving that priceless gift of oneness which God in his wisdom has so freely given to us of Alcoholics Anonymous in the precious years of our infancy."

So how about it? Let's give Gratitude a real send-off this year!

AA Declaration I am responsible, when anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there.

And for that: I am responsible.

Th e Twe l ve Tr a d i t i o n s of Alcoholics Anonymous 1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon AA unity.

2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

3. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or AA as a whole.

5. Each group has but one primary purpose – to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

6. An AA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the AA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every AA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

8. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional, but our service centers may employ special workers 9. AA as such, ought never be organised; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the AA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

PREAMBLE Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are selfsupporting through our own contributions.

AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
