1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Widely known as a “meeting in print,” the AA Reviver communicates the experience, strength, and hope of its contributors and reflects a broad geographic spectrum of current AA experience with recovery, unity, and service.

The AA Reviver is supported through magazine subscription sales and additional income derived from the sale of AA Reviver items.

The awareness that every AA member has an individual way of working the program permeates the pages of the AA Reviver, and throughout its history has been a forum for the varied and often divergent opinions of AA’s everywhere. Articles are not intended to be statements of AA policy; neither does publication of any article imply endorsement by AA or the AA Reviver.

Its editorial team are primarily accountable to the AA Fellowship as a whole. Within the bounds of friendliness and good taste, the AA Reviver enjoys perfect freedom of speech on all matters directly pertaining to AA. Unfortunately, lately we are receiving very few local stories from Sydney and/or NSW. I know there are some great stories out there, and it would be fantastic if some of our members in lockdown could put pen to paper (or do an email) and send in your stories - we need some new material please!!!

November’s issue will cover “Gratitude”, and December’s Reviver will be based on the theme of “Happy, Joyous and Free” and the idea of Christmas (which will be here before we know it.)

OCTOBER TOPIC; ANNUAL PRISON ISSUE Sobriety on the Inside

Carrying the Message in Prisons About two years into my recovery I had a desire to go into the prison system with the AA message but I did not know how to do it. So I asked God to help me. The following week I was at the Monday night AA meeting at Lawson. At the end of that meeting a man said, "If you want to carry the message of recovery into the prisons, see me before you go home."

That man was "Big bad John", the AA Corrective Services Coordinator at that time.

I saw John and he gave me the application forms to fill out. In due course my application was accepted and my security pass was issued. I went to the AA Office at Croydon and picked it up. I started to carry the message of recovery into the gaols from about 1996 until about 2008.

Topic Stories Why the need for me to go into the prisons? To share with the inmates that I had been living a life similar to theirs. How I felt lonely, isolated and unwanted. There was nothing to look forward to; each day was the same — bland and boring. I worked in the kitchen from 6 am to 6 pm, 7 days a week. There was no incentive or direction in life and hoping that someone, anyone, would come and visit me. The prison talk was all about what crimes were going to be done when released and who was going to receive payback. There was a lot of anger and hatred among the inmates. That mindset was negative and depressing to be around.

At Parramatta, the AA meeting started at 2 pm on a Thursday. It was not compulsory for the inmates to attend the AA meetings, they chose to be there. The average number of members (as I liked to call them) at each meeting was around 25 and two AA members. There were no guards present at those meetings, only the members.

The meetings were initially held in the laundry but later moved to the Chapel. They were ID meetings and went for one and a half hours. The members were well behaved and interested in a better way of living.

At Silverwater, the AA meeting started at 7 pm on Saturday night. Attendance at the meetings was by choice. The average number of members was 30 and usually four AA members. They were ID meetings and went for an hour and a half and were held in the visitors' room.

What was the message I carried into those prisons? That there is a life far better than the one I was living in active addiction. How the AA program of recovery lets me treat my alcoholism on a daily basis. How I was able to change my thinking which in tum allowed me to change my behaviour. The Program of Recovery gave me principles to live by. It taught me how to love and how to receive love. Practicing these principles prevented me from going back to gaol.

What I said to those inmates in effect was: "You can have a life similar to mine if you are prepared to change your way of living for that of the AA way of life. By doing what I did and what I am continuing to do on a daily basis ensures that I do not pick a drink up today. You can leave this prison when your time is up and you need not come back, or you can continue to live the way you are. That is your choice."

Did I help anyone? I do not know, but I did help myself grow stronger in my recovery.

That is why I carried the message of recovery into the gaols.

From Gaol to Freedom My name is Colin. I am an alcoholic who has been in A.A. for four years, and my last drink was 12 January 2001.

I drank for eighteen years and drank for the effect - to get off my face. I did not stop until I got drunk or even worse. So I did my first detox at McKinnon in 1998, and my first meeting was a Sunday night meeting, with a member from Ashfield in the chair. When the meeting started, I noticed the banners and saw the word 'God' -which scared me, I was brought up through Catholic schools with the fear of God. Then I heard three guys who spoke of going to police cells, courts, and jails -and then, I knew that I was an alcoholic.

The chairperson asked me to share. I was really scared then, which I think the chairperson knew, because he told me not to worry, and that I was among friends.

So I got up, shivering, shaking, sweat pouring down my face, and said I am Colin, and I am an alcoholic. People came up to me afterwards and said 'well done'.

After that meeting, I left McKinnon, but ran into a friend who had done McKinnon with me who said 'You look well'. So then I went to a pub thinking I could drink socially. I stayed in the pubs until January this year, but kept going back to A.A. meetings. The reason for my last drinking spree was due to resentment against my parole officer, and because I did not have a sponsor.

I lost my Auntie due to cancer, and then I lost my only grandmother at the age of 92. A couple of months later my father had a prostate operation, and when he came out of it, he passed away, but he then came back. Even then, when I went to see him, I could not say 'I love you, Dad'.

At the time I was staying at Don's Cottage, but could not forgive myself for what I had done to my parents - like when I was in jail, I had written a letter saying that 'I have no mother or father' - then, sometime later, it almost came true. So I left Don's after two and a half months sober - the longest period of sobriety I had had.

Next came the parole officer. 'We did not see eye to eye, so I walked out of that office and locked myself in my room at Randwick boarding house. I could not speak 8

to anyone, so I decided to go for some drinks at the Stock Exchange Hotel, then the Metropolitan Hotel. Later I walked to a petrol station to blow myself up because I was sick and tired of trying to get sober. Once I got to that petrol station, I poured petrol all around me on the ground, and then I went inside the petrol station shop to get the police because I was going to kill myself only, and I wanted the police there so that no one else would get hurt. The police arrived some minutes later, and this police officer came up to speak with me, which made things worse.

Sometime later, I felt a tap on my right side. I turned around, and noticed a police officer had me in his sights to blow me away. I gave myself up, because even though I was drunk, I thought how my parents could go to the morgue to say it was me, with my face blown off. I could not do that to them and so I was arrested and charged and refused bail.

I was at Silverwater Gaol until February 12th, when I was bailed to Hope Hostel, and required to report to the police every day. When I got to Hope, I wanted to drink, but I thought that the eyes would be on me, so I decided I would drink the next day.

I had been at Hope Hostel ten years earlier, and this time I got the same room plus the same bed. Then the penny dropped. I knew I was going to be okay, just as long as I did not drink. So I got back to Don's Cottage. I took the cotton wool out of my ears, and put it in my mouth, and I was told to get honest with myself.

One important lesson I have learned is that you have to do this programme for yourself and no one else, and when I think of a drink, I remember what the maximum sentence read out in court was: Ten years for trying to blow a place up; 25 years for murder if someone had died. When that was read out, I knew that I had to do a lot of hard work on myself Now I am 84 days off my first A.A. birthday due to the programme of Alcoholics Anonymous and thanks to a God of my understanding and thanks to you other sober members Colin Parramatta January 2002

Behind Prison Walls My name is Leslie and I am an alcoholic. I am in prison doing a life sentence through alcohol. But please let me say that I do not blame alcohol altogether as I do have a mind of my own. However, as you know, an alcoholic has a sick brain.

I started drinking alcohol at the age of nine and thought it was great fun. By the time I was fifteen I was powerless over alcohol. The silly thing is I carried on drinking.

Five months ago, a young man from the Leopard Group, at Yatala Prison, asked me to give the A.A. programme a go and I said I would think about it.

The following morning I attended an A.A. meeting. I would not be honest if I said it was my first A.A. meeting as I have been to other A.A. meetings, but with a closed mind.

I knew that I had a drinking problem eleven years ago and would not admit it, because I was having fun: how wrong I was!

I am now 26 years old and the past five months have been like paradise, even behind these four walls. In fact, they have been the best months of my life.

TopicArticles Stories Members At first I said that I was too young to be an alcoholic and that alcohol was a disease to me. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.

Before coming to this wonderful program, I didn’t believe in God but I do now accept my Higher Power as God in the way I understand him.

In September, 1973, we had seven visitors with us and that meeting was the best I have ever attended.

One of the outside members came from Sydney and two from Melbourne, and, of course, four were on our prison panel. Believe me, they do a very good job in giving their time up to share with us.

We have one meeting a week and that is not enough for me, so I write to different A.A. members who are willing to share with me and to tell the truth.

This is how I receive 90 per cent of my sobriety and strength as I am one who has to be reminded every day that I am an alcoholic.

The most important change in my new life is sharing, as this was one of the hardest things in my life to do. Thanks to the fellowship of A.A., I am getting over this problem.

If any member would like to write to me and the Group, I will always be sincere in answering.

Well, my friends, I will wish you all the very best and may God as you understand Him keep you in happiness.

A Plea from Prison My name is Leslie and I am an alcoholic serving a long term of imprisonment.

My social drinking ended when I was in my late teens; by 19 my life had become unmanageable and I began having blackouts and stealing tendencies after excessive drinking. During the past 15 years alcohol has been the direct cause of me serving prison sentences in South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. Eight times I have received sentences of 10 days, 90 days twice, six months twice, nine months twice as well as a term of three years and my present sentence of two years.

Alcohol was the direct cause of my dishonourable discharge from both the R.A.N. and A.I.F. for offences committed whilst drunk. Since I was 19 I have been running away from life, living in a mist of false pride, self pity and degradation. I became irresponsible, unreliable, a liar, a false pretender, a thief, shop and house breaker, receiver and braggart. By the time I was 30 I had become a complete alcoholic bum with no ambition in life save the pursuit of alcohol. I'd lie even when the truth would serve as well. I left my wife to buy alcohol. I sold my own clothes to get it.

After some of these bouts I'd begin having blackouts in which I lost all control over my personal habits. I'd commit offences and remember nothing about them until the police knocked on my door. Finally my wife divorced me for at no stage had I even tried to make a home for her and the children. In fact, most of the time she had to give me a home. Prisons, antabuse treatment, clergymen had all failed at sometime or other during the past 15 years to cure me of my craving. It was a fearful existence. My family never knew who'd be knocking on the door next for money that I'd begged, borrowed or robbed.

One Saturday evening I came home with what was left of my Friday's pay. My wife told me I'd have to go for the doctor for my daughter was ill. She was suffering from pneumonia and is alive today only by the grace of God. The doctor wasn't in, so I decided to stop over at a sly-grog shop in Fairfield, Sydney. A week later I woke up in a cell at Murray Bridge, South Australia, charged with having been found drunk in someone else’s car. I got a nine months sentence, yet to this day I don’t know how I got to South Australia.

Topic Stories In 1953 I got into some more trouble at Como. I was drinking in a hotel when it began raining. I walked out of the bar to a parked lorry, took the leather jacket out of it, put it on, walked back into the bar and continued drinking. About two hours later I was charged before a court and given six months gaol. This is a brief outline of the defects of character I had when I turned to a Power greater than myself and asked Him to restore me to sanity. By the grace of God I have now accepted the fact that I am an alcoholic and that I am suffering from a disease called alcoholism which affects me physically, mentally and spiritually I believe that disease has made my life unmanageable.

Here in a prison cell I have found a new and wonderful way of life through the 12 suggested Steps of A.A. – Steps full of wisdom. Before I found this wonderful life I had first to find the truth, humility and sincerity and then undergo a spiritual awakening which in turn brought me to this Power greater than myself who I now call God. Even though I’m in a prison cell, I pray to God to take away all my compulsion to drink. I ask Him to remove all my defects of character and each 24 hours I thank Him and ask for the knowledge to do His will for the next 24 hours.

Through the 12 suggested Steps I am trying to build a foundation of A.A. prison sobriety that will on my release let me find sobriety and serenity and thus become a useful member of society.

This is my second year of A.A. prison sobriety and since I’ve been trying to live the 12 Steps of wisdom (as I call them) I find with the help of God and the serenity prayer, I can manage my life a day at a time. I am learning tolerance, a grace which I never had. As each day passes my resentments grow less. I am finding respect for the law and authority in all forms where in the past there was only hate. I am learning it’s easier to love my fellow man than to rob, lie and cheat him. Don't think I'm trying to insult your intelligence by saying I found religion. Far from it. But since returning to my faith I am finding peace of mind which is something that, to my knowledge, I have never known before. Through prayer I try to thank God for A.A. and the 12 Steps and for what He gives me each day.

When I found truth, humility and sincerity I was able to take a fearless moral inventory of myself which mirrored me as I really was during the past 15 years.

What I saw reflected nothing more than an alcoholic bum, looking for the bottom of a bottle. Now I know I will be morally responsible for any offences I may commit after taking that first drink. By building a foundation here in prison through the 12

Topic Stories Steps I hope to find on my release, happiness and sobriety. Should I fail I'll have at least the satisfaction of knowing I have tried and I will have had many, many 24 hours of peace, tolerance and love for my fellow man.

Thank God for the 12 Steps. Even if I fail A.A. on my release I’ll be a better man for my effort.

Meetings at Long Bay Permission to hold AA meetings at Long Bay Penitentiary, Sydney has been granted, AA Service Council announced recently.

Her Perspectives On Recovery Using the AA Program AA TRADITIONS; Tools, Weapons or Tokens?

What are the AA Traditions and what are they supposed to do? Do they help AA to be decentralised? Unaffiliated? Do they save AA structure from being an organised hierarchy with dominators at the top? Can they always provide care and protection for the alcoholic who still suffers? Our Traditions apply: – to all people who identify as alcoholics; to sober alcoholics committed to a life of recovery and hope through AA; to AA groups from the bursting, bustling inter-group to the handful of diehards at a remote outpost. They apply to AA service bodies of every type, structure and reach, and to our whole AA fellowship around the globe. These Traditions prompt us to consider questions to do with harmonious and productive interaction, trust in leadership, membership requirement, autonomy, primacy of goal, exclusiveness, finance, public relations, and safety for ourselves, other AA members and every part of AA. Are the Twelve Traditions AA survival tools, articles of doctrine, legalistic weapons, operating principles, guardrails, unenforceable guidelines, idealistic tokens, or what?

Next question: what happens if AA Traditions are flouted? A part of the answer might lie in follow-up questions: does it depend on which ones, to what degree, who’s doing the flouting, and, who’s doing the accusing?

Tradition 1 emphasises the imperative of unity in our fellowship, and it applies to all AA relationships. Alcoholics Anonymous without unity would become unfit for purpose, irrelevant, and unsustainable. AA without unity ultimately means personal recovery through AA won’t be possible. Tradition 1 embodies compassion through inclusiveness, respect, prioritising cohesion and negotiating consensus. Trashing Tradition 1 brings about wilful, self-serving ambitions, divisiveness and self-righteous hostility. Unity is like oxygen: it’s easily taken for granted, but try living and breathing without it!

Tradition 2 tells us of our group purpose (i.e. Tradition 5 + the Preamble) and tells us that God is the preeminent authority for it. This means we’re given a true perspective on AA leadership. We are told God is loving and may express Himself in our group conscience, and that each of us is God's trusted servant if we’re worthy of it.

Members Articles Tradition 3 establishes the principle of AA membership. As an extension to the alcoholic’s lament, ‘to drink is to die’, if we deny anyone who claims to be an alcoholic – who claims eligibility for ‘membership’ – the opportunity for sobriety through the rooms, the fellowship and the program of AA then we might be imposing an outcome on them tantamount to a death sentence.

Tradition 4 means that AA groups and service entities can run their own affairs by functioning separately and independently. This Tradition gives freedom in all essential matters, yet this freedom requires adherence to AA principles and carries the responsibility of focusing on sobriety and avoiding actions harmful to AA in any way.

Tradition 5 is summed up by AA’s many primary purposes, namely: primary purpose no 1: stay sober and help an alcoholic to achieve sobriety; primary purpose no 2: stay sober and help another alcoholic to achieve sobriety; primary purpose no 3: stay sober and help another alcoholic to achieve sobriety; primar … are you spotting a pattern here?

Tradition 6 can be usefully described by using the metaphor of a dog wagging its tail.

The AA puppy dog can wag the tail of ‘an internal enterprise’ on the condition that, (i) zero harm is done in an AA sense, and (ii) the spirit of the Twelve Traditions is respected. But if that tail were to be an ‘outside enterprise’, we certainly can’t have the tail wagging the dog.

Tradition 7 is about AA or any AA group or service body supporting itself. Refusing charitable contributions or financial obligations keeps us free from outside influence, concessions and the risk of exploitation. Our spiritual virtue is strengthened when we take responsibility for our own survival and growth. But, it can be destroyed by disputes over property, money and authority.

Tradition 8 outlines that although AA may employ alcoholics, our Twelfth Step work must be voluntary – never to be paid for.

Tradition 9 represents three core tenets about AA having no governors or bosses: first, the absence of authority an individual AA member holds over another; second, the absence of authority an AA entity such as a group holds over an AA member; and third, the absence of authority an AA entity holds over another AA entity or group.

Members Articles Tradition 10 is about AA’s desire to avoid controversy, both publicly and within AA. Therefore, no individual member, group or service body should be expressing personal views which might implicate AA – causing controversy or otherwise – in any external matters. AA has no opinion on anything except about how we focus on AA members’ recovery progress and effectively carry AA’s message.

Tradition 11 concerns AA’s public relations policy, which without exception should be characterised by personal anonymity. Maintaining anonymity for all media liaising affirms AA and shows that all AA members consider themselves as a fellowship of equals. Pursuit of ego and self-glorification by breaking anonymity have no place in AA – any publicity should be for AA principles. Sobriety through the AA program is the strongest attraction AA has.

Tradition 12 highlights anonymity’s spiritual significance. Anonymity provides ironclad protection for AA members by removing the fear and shame of alcoholic stigma, and it brings forth our sacrificing of self-seeking desires for personal acclaim. The spiritual substance of anonymity is sacrifice. Only with it can we practice a genuine humility which engenders gratitude, a care for others and a willingness to be of service to them.

The heading question, ‘tools, weapons or tokens’, needs addressing. When we are humble and amenable to our AA Traditions and their tenets, they become automatically activated as tools for our use and benefit. As we unpack and practice these Traditions, the essence of humility inherently existing within each extends to touch us through the grace and authority of the Higher Power. However, any member, group or service entity using an AA Tradition to punish contravenes this spiritual principle and in so doing contravenes one or more other Traditions. Weaponising any Tradition paradoxically degrades others as mere tokens.

If our AA Steps are the bricks in the brick wall of AA, then the Twelve Traditions must be the mortar that keeps the AA brick wall upright. Living up to these Traditions can sustain the sober heart and leave us in the safe centre of our fellowship, though it takes work and commitment. But their true purpose is to give all who are suffering from alcoholism a start on the journey towards lasting recovery. For the recovering alcoholic, AA Steps are the optimum design for living – if we avail ourselves. AA Traditions are the optimum design for availing ourselves of a design for living: one that works materially, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. So, as they say in AA, why not avail ourselves of the best!

Steps & Traditions

STEP FOUR DID IT FOR ME I would like to share with you my experience I had with my Step Four and Five. Up until I started doing my Step Four I did not understand how the A.A. program was going to help me with my drinking problem. That was my downfall; I was just looking at my drinking and not how I was dealing with my feelings. When I think back to my drinking days, I remember trying to quit. I did for a couple of days at a time, but I would usually end up drinking and getting into some kind of trouble. It was just one never-ending cycle.

But as I look at it now, I used alcohol as a way of dealing with my feelings. It was like breathing for me. I never really faced up to any of my problems when I was sober. It get so bad that I could not understand my feelings any more. The more I tried to understand, the more confused I got. So I stopped trying to understand why the things were the way they were. All I knew was that when I was drinking I had no problems.

Well, it didn't take long for things to really start falling apart -- I lost my job, my friends were getting scarce. I felt like I was pinned up against a wall, so I decided to move. My parents were living in Alberta and they asked me to move there. I was going to start A.A. there, get a good job, I had it all planned out. But until I moved I kept drinking.

Well, I never did make it to Alberta. (I don't think anything would have changed had I made it though). I made it as far as the Federal Penitentiary and a 12 year sentence. Well that was my rock bottom. I knew I had to quit drinking. I tried a few A.A. meetings and saw a psychologist for about the first year of my sentence, but I never really got serious about it.

In the meantime I got transferred to the Saskatchewan Penitentiary. It was there that I started a group that did the Steps in sequence. But all along I was drinking brews and taking pills. I kept saying to myself that I needed it because it is hard doing time and that it would be different on the street. So I went through the first three Steps with that attitude.

A change came when I got to Step Four. It brought all of my defects out in the open where I could have a good look at them. It was the first time in my life that I had a

good look at what was going on inside of me. It was then that I knew that I had to completely surrender myself to the program and that I must start it here.

I did Step Five with a priest. It was bad enough to admit my wrongs to myself, but to another person, I was scared. But I knew it had to be done. Well, when I came away from my little talk with the priest, I felt like a great burden was lifted from me, and that I just took my first step on that endless road of growth.

I am on my second round with the Steps and I am doing Step Four again. I still feel scared but I know that I am growing. I no longer feel the need for brews or pills. I try to face my problems head on and I feel good about it. I am very grateful to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Choose new friends; read instructive, not destructive literature, because the mind, as well as the body, must be healthy.

Help other Alcoholics, to attain the happiness and peace of mind you have found in A.A. Offer daily thanks to God (as you understand Him) for having given you a new way of Life, when only madness or death faced you.

Let the other fellow express his opinions, maybe we can learn a little.

Inventory of ourselves daily will help us to see our weak points; and while fresh in our minds, it will be easier to do something about them.

Control your feelings of Anger, Resentment, Intolerance, Self-pity, and Frustration; they can all be a stepping-stone to that first drink.

Set up a standard in life which you can reach with some effort; not one on a plane entirely beyond your effort …any goal, whether great or small, is a victory when won.

AA Declaration I am responsible, when anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there.

And for that: I am responsible.

Th e Twe l ve Tr a d i t i o n s of Alcoholics Anonymous 1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon AA unity.

2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

3. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or AA as a whole.

5. Each group has but one primary purpose – to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

6. An AA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the AA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every AA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

8. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional, but our service centers may employ special workers 9. AA as such, ought never be organised; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the AA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

PREAMBLE Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are selfsupporting through our own contributions.

AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
