8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Widely known as a “meeting in print,” the AA Reviver communicates the experience, strength, and hope of its contributors and reflects a broad geographic spectrum of current AA experience with recovery, unity, and service.

The AA Reviver is supported through magazine subscription sales and additional income derived from the sale of AA Reviver items.

The awareness that every AA member has an individual way of working the program permeates the pages of the AA Reviver, and throughout its history has been a forum for the varied and often divergent opinions of AA’s everywhere. Articles are not intended to be statements of AA policy; neither does publication of any article imply endorsement by AA or the AA Reviver.

Its editorial team are primarily accountable to the AA Fellowship as a whole. Within the bounds of friendliness and good taste, the AA Reviver enjoys perfect freedom of speech on all matters directly pertaining to AA. Like the AA Fellowship, it mirrors that there is but one central purpose; to try and carry the AA message to alcoholics and practice the AA principles in all its affairs.

APRIL TOPIC; FOR THE NEWCOMER (There’s always a hand) STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT It was another cold, wet Friday evening when I arrived early to make coffee for the 7:30 meeting. Flipping on the lights, I decided not to make the room up; I was sure there would be no participants that night. The nasty weather and lack of members had driven away the last of the diehards.

As usual, I unlocked the back door for easier access from the parking lot that was rarely used, except for birthdays, when most of the old-timers show up to listen to fellow long-time AA friends. I saw on the chalkboard that most of the celebrants had many years of sobriety, and only a few were between one and 10 years. Some months we had no celebrants. I rarely attend the birthday meetings anymore, unless the celebrant is a personal friend. I could give a number of reasons (excuses if you will) why I don’t attend a lot of meetings, but they would be irrelevant.

I’ve chaired this 7:30 Friday night meeting for about four or five years now. My sponsor had rested the responsibility on me after I had a modicum of sobriety. That’s a long time for one person to sit at the helm of any particular meeting, but I’ve had no request from the group or my sponsor to relinquish it to another. Lately, I’ve felt that I should let someone else lead the meeting. However, our attendance has suffered over the last few years, and finding someone with some sobriety has been a challenge. Admittedly, I’ve not searched very hard for a replacement either, feeling not only a sense of duty to my group, but a genuine concern that I would drift away if I didn’t keep that commitment.

Anyway, I sat down to pick a topic for the night’s meeting, I usually stick to the Big Book and the “Twelve and Twelve”, but that night I started flipping through the latest issue of Grapevine; I hadn’t referenced that publication in a meeting for a while.

Members Articles Glancing at the clock, I noticed it was 7:15 and nobody was there – just me. Maybe nobody was going to show up, and I could lock up, go home and spend the evening with my family. Besides, I was bushed after working since 7:30 that morning. A night at home would help me recharge my batteries. Tomorrow was going to be another busy day. But duty calls; I would wait until 7:30 on the dot.

Two minutes before the half hour, I gathered my things and filled a cup of coffee for the road. I had wasted two pots of coffee, in addition to the decaf I’d drunk. Just as I reached for the light, I heard the familiar creak of the front door. A man dressed in a tan overcoat, soaked from the evening’s weather, entered the room and looked around. “Are you the only one here?” he asked. “Yep. I’m it”, I replied. I had never seen this guy around the group.

After dropping his coat on the back of a chair, he reached out his hand to me. “I’m Bill”, he said. “Is it OK if we have a cup of coffee and talk?”

“Sure”, I said, briefly shocked that he didn’t turn around and walk out the door, much like what had happened on the previous week when a long-time member showed up, walked around the room, surveyed the empty chairs, poured himself a cup of coffee and bounced right back out the door without saying a word. We filled our cups and sat down at a table facing each other. Then he briefly told me his story and that he’d been sober three days.

Wow, I thought, could I remember when I was at that point in sobriety? I have a number of 24 hours and going back to the first 72 is a sobering thought (pun intended).

I decided to skip the formalities of reading the Preamble, Steps and Traditions after learning that he had been in and out of the program over the years. Instead, I read from “The Doctor’s Opinion” in the Big Book, the paragraph that ends with, “This is repeated over and over, and unless this person can experience an entire psychic change, there is very little hope of his recovery.” Then the two of us began to talk.

About 10 minutes into our conversation, the door creaked again. I looked over Bill’s shoulder to see a young girl, filled with trepidation, come in and close the door behind her. She sat down on my righthand side and introduced herself. She had just a little over a month in sobriety. I showed her the part that I had read with Bill and she joined the conversation. The three of us talked the hour away. At one point I remember Bill saying, “This is real nice, just having a few people here talking. Big groups can sometimes be hard.” I agreed it was great to sit around the table and just talk. It seemed that some of the pretences were lost, honesty seemed to come easier, and personalities didn’t try so hard to assert themselves in a more personal setting.

Members Articles At the end of the hour, we stood in a circle, held hands and said the Lord’s Prayer.

It made me feel better that after having had an unusual meeting, we had ended it in the usual manner that was a comforting ritual to me.

I ended up giving Bill a ride home. It turned out he had walked in that cold, nasty weather for about two miles, and could have ended up turning a locked knob if he had arrived a minute later. Not to mention the young girl who had slipped through the door 10 minutes after Bill.

While I was waiting for people to show up, looking for a topic and getting the hall ready, the thought that I should find another group with a more “active” membership was going through my mind. I was thinking about what the group had looked like six years earlier when I sauntered through the door into a room full of people just like myself.

With all these people, it was easy for me to slip into the shadows and hang out at the edge of the group, without working or living my program. I even thought that maybe it was my fault that not a soul showed up for a Friday night meeting. So perhaps if I just drifted away like all the others, no one would miss me. I had told myself that this hall was just a place to attend a meeting, that it didn’t matter who was there, didn’t even matter if I came. It was just a meeting place, right?

In my half-hour pity party, thinking about all the things that were wrong with the meeting and why people didn’t show up for the evening meetings, I started to get depressed that not even the regulars were showing up. Where were all the drunks who needed my help? (It’s interesting that I can take a situation and turn it around so that somehow it becomes all about me. Because if people aren’t showing up for “my meeting”, then there must be something wrong with me.)

It occurs to me that the obsession with the meeting, the hall, the membership, money for the bills, and nagging questions about whether the meeting will make it develops when meetings have more old-timers than newcomers, and the old-timers have become complacent and comfortable in the routine. Then it gets easy for the primary goal – to stay sober and help others recover from alcoholism – to be comfortably put aside.

I had fulfilled my obligation to the group and myself, which resonates in the mantra, “When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA always to be 6

Members Articles there. And for that: I am responsible”. I had arrived one half-hour early, unlocked the doors, turned on the lights and made coffee. If no one had shown up, I at the very least had made myself available. As my sponsor reminds me, “That’s all you can do.” Making myself available at other meetings and times is part of that equation, one that I often overlook in my busy schedule and life. I forget how my life was on the downward skid but someone was here for me the night I crossed the Rubicon. It doesn’t matter how many other drunks are there when you first come in, as long as there is one.

In the moment of my own self-pity two newcomers who were still suffering walked through the door that night. I was grateful I could be there to receive their help.

ONE FATEFUL THANKSGIVING I quit drinking for two months in 1977 after I finally managed to get a job. For two years before that I’d been mainly homeless, friendless and hopeless. My drinking had cost me a marriage, a very good job, all my worldly possessions and all of my self-worth.

Then Thanksgiving came and a four-day drunk ensued. I came out of a blackout lying in a snowbank about 40 miles outside of town. I should have frozen to death, but luckily, God looked out for me.

Members Articles When I crawled into work the next day, a coworker asked me if I had had enough yet. What a question. That guy became my first sponsor and took me to my first AA meeting, He told me I needed an open mind and a willingness to learn. I was willing to go to any lengths. I have not had a drink since. I now get to ask other men: “Have you had enough yet?”

THE ELUSIVE NEWCOMER There was a young man who always came late to our meeting and would make a beeline for the farthest corner of the room. He’d then leave before anyone could talk to him.

One day, I saw a small car holding a woman and four young children blocking the parking places nearest the door. That same day, the elusive newcomer was sitting up at the table and not back in the corner. The discussion about finding a Higher Power had gotten his attention. When it came his turn to share, he said it reminded him of going to church as a kid. Then he told us the funniest story: For weeks he had sat in his car in the parking lot during our meetings but then his probation officer let him know that the location device around his ankle was very sensitive, and informed him that he would actually have to go inside to the AA meeting.

As usual, our newcomer ran out quickly.

I watched as he jumped into that car with the woman and all the children.

I took a deep breath and said a small prayer for him and his family.

EMOTIONAL MATURITY The mature person has developed attitudes in relation to himself and his environment which have lifted him above "childishness" in thought and behaviour.

Some of the characteristics of the person who has achieved true adulthood are suggested here: They accept criticism gracefully, being honestly glad for an opportunity to improve.

They do not indulge in self-pity.

They have begun to feel the laws of compensation operating in all life.

They do not expect special consideration from anyone.

They control their temper.

They meet emergencies with poise.

Their feelings are not easily hurt.

They accept responsibility of their own acts without trying to alibi .

They have outgrown the "all or nothing" stage. They recognize that no person or situation is wholly good or wholly bad, and they begin to appreciate the Golden Mean.

They are honestly glad when others enjoy success or good fortune.

They have outgrown envy and jealousy.

They are open minded enough to listen thoughtfully to the opinions of others.

They are not impatient at reasonable delays. They have learned that they are not the arbiter of the universe and that they must often adjust themselves to other people and their convenience.

They are a good loser. They can endure defeat and disappointment without whining and complaining.

They do not worry unduly about things they cannot help.

They are not given to boasting or showing off in socially unacceptable ways.

They are not a chronic faultfinder.

They plan things in advance rather than trusting, to the inspiration of the moment.

Last of all, we think in terms of spiritual maturity.

They have faith in a Power greater than themselves.

They feel themselves an organic part of mankind as a whole, contributing their part to each group of which they are a member. They obey the spiritual essence of the golden rule: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ( Anonymous) AA REVIVER

(Issued by the Melbourne Group of Alcoholics Anonymous) NEW SYDNEY GROUP WILL EDIT NEXT ISSUE OF THE REVIVER I don’t know if any arrangements have been made for the Sydney Groups to take turns to edit the Reviver if not the Kings Cross Group is willing to give it a go.

A letter bearing this welcome news reached us recently. Here are other extracts from the letter describing the astounding growth of the Group in such a short period.

The Kings Cross Group began this year by a couple of people meeting each Sunday Night for dinner.

Soon the grapevine spread the news and it was decided to move to a larger and less expensive Coffee Lounge. However the number of members again increased and so a room in a Hall – The Maccabean Hall, Darlinghurst Road — was engaged. This room held only about 16 members and as still more arrive each week a larger room was taken. This we still occupy and the attendance is now approximately 70. One night reaching the astounding figure of 93.

We have now started a closed Group in a smaller room at the same address each Thursday Night This is mostly a beginners and discussion Group and is very popular with the Ladies Mary F., THANKS KINGS CROSS We are very grateful to the Kings Cross Group for their kind offer which we kindly accept. Their direct mailing address has not reached us but the correspondence address The Reviver c/o A.A. Services Room 3 1st Floor 173 Pitt Street Sydney is sure to reach them. This is the address of the new Central Service Committee’s Office (Phone BL2552) Now that a Sydney Group will edit The Reviver we are hopeful that the Central Service Committee in Sydney may take over the paper permanently and publish it monthly. The current method of publication is far too cumbersome and as Sydney is the ideal situation for an Australian A.A. periodical it seems to be the logical place for the Reviver to settle down and give us and especially isolated members a much needed service.

The Reviver, In 1951 the news sheet the 'Weekly Reminder' was published in Victoria. This was followed by the 'Reviver' first published on 6th August, 1952. There was also an edition published in Adelaide in September, 1952. A request by Melbourne for the Reviver to be published in Sydney and approved in November, 1952 by the Sydney Executive Committee and the first issue published in N.S.W. by the King's Cross Group in 1-1-1953. Since then the Reviver has been published every month. Every edition of the Reviver is kept safely as bound copies in the Archives of C.S.O. Croydon.

Archives Corner Facts And Figures about “The Reviver” Archives Corner It is YOUR paper and YOUR editors feel it is time to give you the first accounting of its petition and its welfare.

The four-page paper you are now holding costs a trifle more than sixpence to produce. Work it out for yourself.

This issue consists of 800 copies. The printing bill was £22.

Of these 800 copies, we mailed quite a large number—ranging from single copies to parcels of 30—and postage cost us from 25/- to 30/-.

Printing and postage are our only expense. All editorial labors, art work, and the making of printing blocks are contributed.

So, if we sell the whole issue of 800 at 1/- each, we shall show a profit. But we're not out to show profits.

That isn't the business of AA. OF. BY AND FOR AAs Only you can help us sell "The Reviver," and you can help only by buying it. This newspaper is of, by, and for AAs in Australia.

Each of the earlier eight-page issues of 700 copies cost £35 to print, or I/- a copy.

That is exactly what you were asked to pay.

Of course, we also had to mail numbers of those copies, and our mailing cost were therefore a dead loss.

So, you see, there ARE losses on the roundabout as well as gains upon the swings.

This isn't a moan about money. AA, as we have said, is not a profit-making show. Neither is it a wailing wall.

After paying for this issue we will have about £70 in hand, made up of £50 in cash and £20 in good debts.

Some of that money comes from subscriptions already paid in advance for 12 issues of "The Reviver.

YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED! We are not afraid for the future of "The Reviver"—but we do ask you to support it.

We, as alkies ask you to do this because we feel that "The Reviver" is good for AA as a whole; for the groups and for the loners.

We ask you to read it, to write for it, and to buy it. You may think a bob for four pages is a bit much.

Brother (or sister), have you considered the present price of grog?

Write for the paper and about the paper. Tell us what you think of it. Make suggestions.

As we mentioned before, it's YOUR paper. We are your servants.

Porfirio’s Recovery Topics Her Perspectives On Recovery Using the AA Program AN OPEN QUESTION ON AN OPTIMUM AA STRUCTURE This is Part Three of a three-part series exploring the ways of our AA service structure.

The first part covered AA structure at a personal level and the second part covered our structure at a general level. This part is called ‘An open question’ and considers a search for an optimum AA structure.

Members of Alcoholics Anonymous are told ‘we have to give it away to keep it’. Not only does personally helping other alcoholics towards sobriety also help us, this saying means we fortify our own sobriety when we volunteer for service within the broader AA service structure. We can then conclude that an optimum service structure is one which will best serve all alcoholics who want sobriety, including ourselves. It’s what all of us should desire. The AA Twelve Concepts express the tenets, ‘Rights’ and spiritual elements underpinning our organised service activities. However, the Concepts have been around for nearly sixty years, some haven’t aged too well, and they were devised for the unique and well-populated North American AA fellowship.

Notwithstanding this, it is reasonable to expect that an optimum structure would be firmly nestled in the bosom of our AA Concepts.

Let’s look at an optimum AA structure in a faraway land. On a nearly civilised planet in a solar system closest to earth lies a country called ‘Ailartsua’. This sounds Polynesian but it’s actually a Latin name, sort-of. The Alcoholics Anonymous fellowship exists there in Ailartsua and its AA service structure has been wonderfully reformed into an optimum structure. In this rejuvenated place, AA was once run in a way many thought should be done better: there was too much power at the top! When an organisation’s structural system is flawed in this way, its self-correction mechanisms are bound to fail.

This is Ailartsua’s service structure template – there are 30 Areas representing the AA groups located inside 30 geographical regions. This nation is a federation with 151 federal electorates. By arithmetic, each Area approximately occupies five electorates (30 into 151). Though some of the 21 previous Areas chose to remain

unchanged from the previous structure, Area rearranging came about with assistance from the state-based AA Service Councils. Delegates from the 30 Areas get together for the annual Conference organised by a Conference Executive Committee. The Delegates deliberate and vote on topics at Conference, and elect a rotating portion of the Committee. This Committee, comprised of former Delegates and Service Council office-bearers, runs the national office. The whole organisation described above is an AA body as well as an Incorporated charitable entity required to comply with a constitution. A rotation mechanism for all Committee members is written into the constitution.

A company which is not an AA body is also part of the overall structure. Present and past Committee Executives are eligible to be ‘Members’ of this charity-based company. The company’s Board has AA member Directors from among its Members who are prevented by its constitution from being current Committee Executives for separation-of-powers purposes, and additional Directors who are non-alcoholic Trustees. The Members select the make-up of the Board by utilising a rotation mechanism incorporated in the company’s constitution.

The Conference voting arrangement is that all 30 Area Delegates vote, and additionally the Committee, the office and the Board each have a vote – that’s 33 in total. The Conference Committee, through the office, liaises with AA members, AA groups, Areas and the general public. The office accepts donations and sells AA literature and other material to regional offices (CSOs). The office has paid employees and operates with a prudent financial reserve. The company is the financial repository for all donated funds beyond the office’s needs. Interactions with Service Councils and all dealings with international AA bodies are conducted by the company, including holding the literature copyright.

In the previous structure there were 21 Areas – that is, there were 21 geographical regions collectively representing 99.9% of all the AA members in AA groups nationally.

But!! All of these Areas together constituted less than 60% of the total votes for Conference decision-making. The remainder of the votes came from a few more than a dozen people who represented 0.1% of AA members nationally. This meant that a minority of the Areas representing a minority of the country’s AA members could easily collect a majority of the votes for Conference decision-making if their votes were added to by the handful of people who constituted over 40% of total votes.

Members Articles It was very undemocratic in a vote that if this small 0.1% group voted as a bloc then a theoretical majority of AA members nationwide, as represented by a corresponding majority of the Areas, would not win that vote! Put simply, there was an over-emphasis on Concept IV, the ‘Right of Participation’, and incidentally, an under-emphasis on that part of Concept XI relating to rotation of service positions, paid and volunteer.

How did all the AA members represented in the 21 Areas get to have their optimum structure? The Areas banded together in a show of collective will and stopped making donations. Thus Concept VII, emphasising the power of the purse, was swung into action. Before this, though, all the Areas had a conscience vote among themselves about approving the specific structural change described. The ‘0.1% bloc’ were not invited to be part of the vote because this handful of people could skew the voting outcome by 40%. There is a principle at work here, meant to remove the very strong risk of bias. It is the principle of natural justice that no person should be judge in a case in which they have an opportunity to serve their own cause. ‘Nemo judex in causa sua’ is the Latin legal phrase that sums this up. The unofficial, nonConference majority vote yielded the result that a new structure (or initially an altered structure) should be in place to limit the Conference voting power of the ‘0.1% bloc’.

Progressing with all the changes was a multi-stage operation. It was a bit like the signing of Magna Carta for the rebel Barons when medieval England was ruled by harsh King John.

Returning to the theme of the previous two articles in this series, unchecked legalism imposed by AA service entities obstructs other service bodies doing service work under grace, and robs AA volunteers of the deep, selfless rewards service work offers. An inability to rein in excessive authority has disturbing implications. Can the values and practices found within our present structure guarantee fairness – are they

Members Articles inclusive, conciliatory and truly democratic? The ‘open’ question is: Do you want a better service structure here, an optimum AA structure free from self-righteous legalism? Action, perseverance and an infusion of new blood are the keys to structural reform. Under legalism we either follow the letter of the law or it’s invoked against us. Under grace we are free to learn from our mistakes, to change and grow, and to allow God through our AA fellowship to reward us with his blessings.

MAREE FROM AA (Vale) Hi, Im Brad from Newcastle. Firstly from all of Us to PAUL , thanks for sharing your Mum with us. To John and Lorraine, thanks for sharing Maree with us. To Barry, Maree’s great neighbour and friend, thanks for caring for Maree for all these years.

And, to God for putting Maree in our paths. As you can see from all of us here she truly was a gift. The stories that are going to be told are our gifts back to you.

I first met Maree at the Sefton youth Group in 1984. I was 22 and this lady was not what I thought an ALCOHOLIC should look like . Clean, tidy, immaculately dressed, Maree had that gift of making the new member feel better than they were.

She said to me in that wonderful Maree voice...

“Darling , I know of a great hospital for you to go to WHEN you are ready.” Not if, WHEN. She was talking about Mckinnon Unit. I only found out recently that Maree was amongst the first intake of patients into Mckinnon. Four men and two women. Her love of the place that saved her life and many others including mine was obvious and was always mentioned when Maree spoke.

Some of Maree’s great legacies are heard at meetings and in Alki conversations.

“Walk a mile in my shoes before you judge me” Helen from Revesby as a new member, was admiring Maree’s shoes. Maree took them off, and gave them to her. Helen used to say that “she really had walked a mile in Maree’s shoes”.

When getting sober Maree worked as a receptionist and was on the phone all the time. She fell in love with a voice over the phone. It was a salesman that Maree just loved the sound of. When she finally met him she said “He looked like Mr Sheen, but I married him anyway.“ It didn’t last long and She would say “why do I have to marry them”. ! Maree was married 3 times !!!

“Its not Saints Anonymous” was another of Maree’s sayings.

Members Articles/ Vale Bills angst. She loved Bill . He implored her to stop swearing. Her swearing was like music to the newcomer’s ears . It meant we weren’t in a cult or a religious organisation. And it definitely wasn’t “Saints Anonymous.”

Maree blew the “Saints Anonymous” thing right out of the water for me in my early days , with a late night coffee after a meeting. We were up at Kings Cross: Terry from the Gold Coast, Maree from Bankstown, Kate from Sefton Friday Night and me, Brad from Sefton Youth Group. Walking through the Cross and Kate said “there must be a fancy dress party on”. The street girls were dressed and ready for work!

Maree looked at me , smiled , raised her eyebrows just a little and gave that cheeky, teethy grin of hers . As we walked, looking for a coffee shop, a bouncer came out of one of the strip joints and said to us “Come in, Come in. We’ve got everything “Without missing a step Maree in her lovely white gown with the fur coat and high heels, turned and said “Have you got a pig , rooting a dog ?“ The bouncer said “NO !” Maree said “well you haven’t got everything have you”. We kept walking. The bouncer knew he had met his match and I knew I belonged in AA. Maree’s story of alcoholic devastation was so powerful you could feel it.

When she talked of the scratching , the itching, the wigs to cover the scabs on her head , the horrid withdrawals, you could feel it. Her gratefulness of just being sober, of smelling like a sober woman should smell. You knew she had been there. She not only talked of nothing being too good for the sober alcoholic - she lived it. It was her compassion for the new member, that was going through what Maree, “had already been”, that always shone through.

Eventually I was ready and Maree took me to Mckinnon unit . She visited the Mckinnon meeting while I was in there. And as always she was immaculate.

The other patients said to me “didn’t she bring you in here?” I proudly and sheepishly said “Yep”. Maree told her story, we were all shivering and shaking . Maree told us that she had been “where we were, and that there was a way out. Do anything but don’t drink” She was the living proof that this thing could work.

In 1987 Maree had an Anurism, It was severe. I was two years sober and living up the coast when I got the news.

I broke down. How could GOD take such a person in the prime of her sober life? I prayed saying exactly that, and that her work wasn’t done yet. I know many others AA REVIVER

Members Articles/ Vale were saying the same prayer. A feeling that all would be OK came over me. I got the news a week or so later Maree was healing.

God agreed that her work wasn’t done YET . Maree and my other Alki friends attended my wedding in 1991. She knew where I had come from and I knew she knew. She was proud of me. Maree’s help over the years was restricted by more ill health and her eyes started to fail.

Other medical issues started to arise. She always had that wicked sense of humour and she would love to hear me tell her some of her one liners and life stories that she had forgotten.

I was at a meeting real early in my sobriety and was sitting between Maree and a 30 yr sober person. A long winded speaker was talking jibberish when the 30 yr leaned over to me and said “I wish this bloke would shut up, Stan hasn’t spoken yet.” Maree didn’t hear him but leant over shortly after and said “your about to watch a miracle “. I saw an immediate difference between the two of them. After 20 minutes or so the man’s stutter disappeared, his anxiety settled down and his clarity returned.

I said to Maree, “how did you know that would happen?” She said “I heard him last night “. She laughed that laugh that we all love.

Maree broke the Ice on step 4 for many of us. She told of her devastation from the floor and would add “but I wasn’t responsible”. She would say “If I can forgive myself why cant you? “ Maree to me is what AA is all about. Sailor Bill asked Maree to stop swearing 46 years ago. Lorraine said that recently Maree had told her that “I’ve stopped swearing”.

Maybe she knew Bill and the others were waiting for her. Maree pre-paid for her funeral on the 23rd of Feb 2011. She died on the 23rd of Feb 2020.

Its not “Saints Anonymous” stuff, but with Maree it comes close. I will continue as always to tell of her. She was in Liverpool hospital recently and I called her but she was too ill to take the call. I asked the nurse to relay to Maree that Brad from Newcastle had called, and that the prayers for her were from many members that had never met her. She smiled. One of Maree’s favourite sayings was “the most spiritual thing one person can do for another is to make them smile”. Maree made many of us smile. ( continued pg 20) 18 APRIL 2021

Maree’s daily prayer was: “Please God, Keep me away from the first Drink, The first Pill, and the first Joint .

As Maree’s health deteriorated, she added “and please let me take my medications as prescribed”. I asked Maree last year if it was ok to relay parts of her story to members that would never meet her, but needed to hear her message. She was pleased and said “Yes, I hope it can help someone.” We’ve travelled from Newcastle today. Two lady members and my wife of twenty eight years, Linda.

The two members, Donna and Cathy, have never met Maree, but they both know her .

Maree and Maree’s message will always be alive in AA. Rest well Maree, Your in the chair tonight. Farewell, Blonde Maree, Maree from Banks House, Maree from Mckinnon, Maree from Liverpool, Farewell MAREE FROM AA. In closing, Id like us all to say and remember Maree’s prayer that served her for 46 years. And as we all get older, and need the medications, don’t forget to add the “Please let me take my medication as prescribed”.

God, please keep me away, from the first drink, the first pill, and the first joint.

Stories About The STEPS & TRADITIONS PENELOPE’S STORY

From 1975, Sydney, 12th step home visit, to a forty-five-year sobriety story shared at San Antonio in 2020.

“PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. It works when other activities fail. This is our TWELFTH SUGGESTION: Carry this message to other alcoholics! You can help when no one else can. You can secure their confidence when others fail. Remember they are very ill.”(Alcoholics Anonymous, p89) This story began forty-five years ago, but to tell it, we need to begin at a more recent point in time in September 2020 when I attended the San Antonio, Mostly Agnostics, A.A., Zoom meeting. I have become a regular attendee because the San Antonians provides an atheist friendly space for the alcoholic. As I looked at the computer screen, I saw many familiar faces in attendance, plus one or two I had not seen before. Then I recognised Penelope from the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. She had been sober a very long time, over forty-five years in fact. But she thought she would never reach that figure because she has been quite ill in recent years and thought she was doing exceptionally well to achieve forty-four years of sobriety last year. Although Penelope and I have lived in the same area of Sydney and surrounds for decades, I only recently came in contact with her through our mutual attendance at A.A. Zoom meetings. She has had more than her fair share of life’s ups and downs in her sobriety with her shares reflecting this long-term sobriety experience.

At the San Antonio meeting, Penelope spoke about her early A.A. days with her sponsor, Joyce from Crow’s Nest who put her at ease, treating her as an equal.

Sometimes in many sponsor/sponsee relationships the sponsor will try to maintain the high ground using their longer sobriety experience. They talk down to the sponsee in a dictatorial language style telling them what they must do. And this is a style that does work for some in sponsor/sponsee relationships. But as Penelope explained, Joyce was very much of a different school of thought where she placed both herself and Penelope on a very level, inclusive sobriety playing field. This was reflected with Joyce’s gentler use of language style of equals using ‘we’ and ‘us’ terminology. As a newcomer, I much preferred this gentler language usage, which put me at ease with older sober members, creating a calm atmosphere where I naturally felt that unique alcoholic affinity with them. In time, I came to understand that the older sober member needed the newcomer, me in this case, just as much as I needed the older sober AA REVIVER

Members Articles member to achieve and maintain sobriety. But while Joyce could be gentle, she also had a very firm side and when necessary spoke directly in a no-nonsense manner to the point of being blunt. Many Sydney A.A. members can attest to experiencing this side of Joyce’s character.

That day, as I listened to Penelope share and was drawn into her story, my mind cast back in time to my early days in A.A. I heard the name Joyce from Crow’s Nest, mentioned by both Bruce from Hydabrae and Bryan from Ryde, two long-term sober members of A.A. I met Bruce very early on at the Langton Clinic, Sunday morning A.A. ID meeting and we struck up a friendship. We went to meetings together where he introduced me to his long term A.A. friend Bryan from Ryde. During my conversations with Bruce, I discovered that he not only knew Joyce but was in fact her first cousin.

And more recently, during my conversations with Penelope, I discovered that she also knew Bruce years earlier from the A.A. meetings in Port Macquarie, NSW. We’re all connected to each other one way or another.

After the San Antonio meeting, I followed up Penelope’s story by emailing her and told her how her mentioning Joyce brought back memories of both Bruce and Bryan and my discussions with them over the years when Joyce would frequently be mentioned.

In her reply email, Penelope told me that not only did she remember both of them but that Bryan had been the one to 12th step her into A.A. over forty-five years ago. She rang the A.A. Central Office in Sydney one Saturday morning asking for help and later that afternoon Bryan arrived at her home with his wife Robin. Penelope went on to say that she didn’t identify with a word Bryan said because his story was completely unlike hers and was more like her dad’s. But it was the fact that Bryan and his wife had given up their Saturday afternoon to come along and help her, that sold her on A.A. She couldn’t believe that someone would be so kind as to do that for her!

I am in regular contact with Bryan and met him later that same week at the Friday, Budgewoi, 10.00am, A.A., ID meeting. I told him I had attended the San Antonio Mostly Agnostics A.A. Zoom meeting earlier in the week and had been talking to someone he 12th stepped forty-five years ago; that got his attention. When I told him that the person was Penelope, his face broke into a broad smile as he recalled the memory of that fateful Saturday forty-five years ago. Bryan hadn’t been in contact with Penelope for a number of years and was delighted to hear that she was still going strong as he was aware that she had been battling a serious long-term illness. He also told me that Penelope had a brother, Terry who also got sober but Bryan hadn’t been in touch with him for a long time.

Bryan shared at Budgewoi that day and spoke about his 12th step call to Penelope, he was about two years sober at the time. He received a phone call from a volunteer at the 22 APRIL 2021

Members Articles Sydney, A.A. Central office on Saturday morning and even though Bryan and his wife Robin were supposed to attend a family function, the 12th step call automatically took priority. As was typical, he was very keen to make the call but then he faced a dilemma when he discovered that the person in question, Penelope, was a female. Bryan had been taught in A.A. that the golden rule for 12th step work is men for men and women for women as a safeguard. However, a male may participate in a 12th step visit to a female as long as he is with another female. Bryan asked the Central Office caller if there was a female A.A. member available to go in his place but was told that there wasn’t. It was going to have to be Bryan or else Penelope wouldn’t get a visit. As Bryan hesitated, unsure of what to do, Robin his wife who was not an A.A. member had been listening to him and understood his unfolding dilemma. She quietly suggested to him that she could accompany him on the 12th step call to facilitate the male and female requirement. Very much relieved, Bryan told the Central Office caller, “Yes.”, he would call on Penelope.

The addition of Bryan’s description of his part in the 12th step service call that fateful Saturday afternoon fleshed out the story further. This example of intensive work with another alcoholic, Penelope in this case, strengthened Bryan’s sobriety, ensuring immunity from drinking while at the same time offering Penelope the opportunity to also get sober. But at the same time, Bryan needed Penelope just as much as she needed him, a shared, mutual need to stay sober.

In a later conversation, Penelope relayed another element of the day’s events when she told me that prior to Bryan’s visit, her initial call to A.A. Central Office prompted them to appropriately select a female A.A. member to visit Penelope. This member did call Penelope, but only to tell her she was too busy to visit her. This member drank again soon afterwards, it was one of Penelope’s first lessons in A.A. about being responsible. She could see that Bryan who acted on the call for help and visited her stayed sober, while the first A.A. person didn’t follow through with the call for help and drank again; it’s not about what we say about sobriety that’s important, it’s about what we do.

As already mentioned, the 12th step call was a success with Penelope getting sober, achieving over forty-five years of sobriety and sharing her experience with us at the San Antonio A.A, meeting in 2020, forty-five years later. But there is one more part to this story that needs to be mentioned. The year after Penelope got sober, she was able to share her introduction to A.A. with her brother Terry at Easter, when he joined A.A. as well. He now has forty-four years of sobriety and always asks Penelope what would have happened to him if she hadn’t come along? And what would have happened to all of us who followed in their footsteps?

The Penelope’s, Joyce’s, Bruce’s, Bryan’s, Robin’s, Terry’s, A.A. office volunteers, San Antonio A.A meeting hosts and innumerable, unnamed and anonymous A.A.’s, create and maintain a living, human, chain of 12th step, service. A service that maintains immunity from picking up the first drink by following through with commitment to carry the message to the still suffering alcoholic.

AA Declaration I am responsible, when anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there.

And for that: I am responsible.

Th e Twe l ve Tr a d i t i o n s of Alcoholics Anonymous 1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon AA unity.

2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

3. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or AA as a whole.

5. Each group has but one primary purpose – to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

6. An AA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the AA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every AA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

8. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional, but our service centers may employ special workers 9. AA as such, ought never be organised; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the AA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

PREAMBLE Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are selfsupporting through our own contributions.

AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
