or all of us, 2020 and the Coronavirus have brought many changes to our normal operations.

We are so glad to have re-opened on May 11th with a number of new operating procedures both proactively and in addition to our normal safety and sterilization procedures. Our treatment rooms and common spaces are now equipped with Surgically Clean Air medical grade air filters that remove pollutants, bacteria and potential virus’ from the air. High-speed aerosol evacuators are also utilized to reduce the release of aerosols. The staff at Mountain View Family Dental are wearing N95 masks, sterile scrubs and face shields as extra precautionary personal protective equipment.

Our patients must wait in their cars until we have cleaned and prepared for their appointment, and all paperwork is completed online. Patients have been very understanding of these changes and appreciate these extra measures we have taken to keep their dental experience as safe as possible while Covid-19 still poses a health threat.

etween soccer and scouts, your school-age kid’s schedule is loaded with fun activities. If you’re on the fence about adding music classes to the list, take note of the benefits that come with signing your little one up for violin or piano lessons. Maybe he/she won’t be the next Beethoven, but they may have an easier time learning math, practicing good manners (including patience!), and becoming a team player. Plus, music is the perfect gift for any occasion! Read on to learn more about the benefits of music education: It improves academic skills.

Music and math are highly intertwined. By understanding beat, rhythm, and scales, children are learning how to divide, create fractions, and recognize patterns.

It seems that music wires a child’s brain to help him better understand other areas of math, says Lynn Kleiner, founder of Music Rhapsody in Redondo Beach, CA. As kids get older, they’ll start reciting songs, calling on their short-term memory and eventually their long-term memory. Using a mnemonic device to do this is a method that can later be applied to other memory skills, says Mary Larew, Suzuki violin teacher at the Neighborhood Music School in New Haven, Connecticut.

Musical instrument classes also introduce young children to basic physics. For instance, plucking the strings on a guitar or violin teaches children about harmonic and sympathetic vibrations. Even non-string instruments, such as drums and the vibraphone, give big kids the opportunity to explore these scientific principles.

It develops physical skills.

Certain instruments, such as percussion, help children develop coordination and motor skills; they require movement of the hands, arms, and feet. This type of instrument is great for high-energy kids, says Kristen Regester, Early Childhood Program Manager at Sherwood Community Music School at Columbia College Chicago. String and keyboard instruments, like the violin and piano, demand different actions from your right and left hands simultaneously. “It’s like patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time,” Regester says. Instruments not only help develop ambidexterity, but they can also encourage children to become comfortable in naturally uncomfortable positions. Enhancing coordination and perfecting timing can prepare children for other hobbies, like dance and sports.

Medicare and Other Insurances Offered by: Jennifer Bell - Bell Benefits, LLC

W

hen a person turns 65 and already has health insurance, it can be really complicated to figure out what is required when you’re looking at Medicare.

You might have another type of health coverage like Employer Health Coverage, Retiree Coverage, COBRA, VA Benefits or an individual health plan when you turn 65. Each plan comes with a different set of rules and it’s important to understand your particular situation.

First, let’s talk about the term “credible coverage.” Medicare uses this term for your “other” types of health insurance. If you don’t have credible coverage, you need to have Medicare Parts A, B & D to avoid unwanted penalties.

Credible coverage is insurance that can take the place of Medicare without you incurring a penalty. There seems to be one main form of credible coverage in the eyes of Medicare. This is the employer coverage you have from either your own or your spouse’s active employment (one of you is still working).

Not all employer health plans are credible but most are. It is best to check with your HR department to confirm.

If coverage is not credible, then you would need to have both Medicare Parts A, B & D in place to avoid incurring a penalty later in life.

If you have the following types of health coverage, you will also need Medicare in place to avoid a penalty on Parts B & D: most COBRA plans, Retiree Coverage, Veterans Administration benefits, or Individual Health Insurance.

An interesting point, although VA benefits are not credible coverage for Part B, they are credible coverage for Part D. I’m happy to help you sort out your personal options.

s we go through the coronavirus pandemic, with its constant threat to personal health and its devasting impact on the economy, it can be hard to find a silver lining. But if there is one, it’s that government agencies, private businesses and nonprofit organizations have contributed, in one way or another, to helping relieve some of the stresses – financial, physical or emotional –that many of us are feeling. So, it’s important for you to know what types of help are out there.

Here are some of the key areas in which resources are available:

• Unemployment – The CARES Act, a major piece of the recent economic stimulus packages, expanded several aspects of unemployment insurance, including eligibility, amount and duration.

To learn more about unemployment insurance flexibility during the COVID-19 outbreak, and to find a link to your own state’s unemployment insurance office, visit: https://www.dol.gov/general/ topic/unemployment-insurance. You might be able to collect some benefits even if you’re still working. Specifically, if your hours have been reduced, you could receive part of your unemployment benefits as short-time compensation. Your company’s human resources area can let you know if you’re eligible.; • Banking/Credit Cards/Consumer and Student loans – Many financial institutions are offering loan modifications, fee waivers or new lending products to help consumers during this time. To see what’s available, contact your own bank or credit union. Credit card issuers and other consumer loan providers are also offering programs to help borrowers; to learn more, visit these creditors’ web sites or call their customer service lines. And, as part of the CARES Act, borrowers can stop making payments on federally held student loans through Sept. 30, 2020.

• Health care – Losing employment often means losing health insurance. If you’ve recently lost your coverage, you may be eligible to participate in the special enrollment period to sign up for an Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plan. Depending on your income, you may be eligible for subsidized health insurance. To see if you qualify for the special enrollment period, or for Medicaid or CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program), go to https://www.healthcare. gov/screener/. If you don’t qualify for Medicaid or CHIP and can’t afford health insurance, you may be able to get free or low-cost services at a community health center. To find one near you, go to https:// findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov/.

• Mortgage – Another provision of the CARES Act allows you to apply for suspension or reduction of your mortgage payment for a limited time if you have a federally backed mortgage (FHA, VA, USDA, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac). You’ll need to contact your own mortgage service provider to request this relief.

• Utilities – Many gas, electric and water service providers are temporarily suspending disconnections of customers unable to pay their bills due to the effects of the pandemic. Also, some utilities are suspending late fee charges. Contact your local utilities to determine the benefits for which you may be eligible.

• Telecommunications/Internet – Numerous broadband and telephone service providers (https://www.fcc.gov/keep-americansconnected#pledges) have agreed to temporarily stop terminations and waive late fees for customers facing financial struggles arising from the pandemic.

And some providers (https://www.fcc.gov/keep-americans-connected/ above-and-beyond) are also offering other benefits, such as free internet service to students and teachers and increased broadband speeds for customers working remotely. These are challenging times, to say the least.

But by availing yourself of the appropriate resources, you may well be able to make your life easier.

A

s I come in to the Karate school the students file in for their lessons.

One of my young students, Lincoln walks into the school with his mom and we greet each other; he walks toward me with a postcard on his hand and says: “Here Sensei... “ On the postcard he had written: “Thank you for teaching me, I love Karate. Love Lincoln” along with a Karate stick figure. I was touched and so happy to get this wonderful and unexpected gift.

I get similar notes, drawings, and even special toys from my students.

Once, a three year old gave me his toy keys which made musical sounds. I was honored but a bit confused, his mom explained that it was his favorite toy, and that he wanted me to have it.

I am very much moved by the generosity and gratitude of my students, and it makes me reflect on what a positive effect these little, thoughtful gifts have on me. I know that my attitude, my self esteem, and my mood all took a positive boost from Lincoln’s postcard. It also made me reflect about all the people that I could impact positively if I actually expressed my gratitude for them in a concrete way.

While most of us are polite enough to say “thank you” to others, think about how much more thoughtful it is to give someone a note, to actually write down your appreciation for them. I am not talking about going out and buying a greeting card, no, most of my “Thank you” notes are pages torn off school notebooks, in fact, I never even thought about what they were written on until just now. It is about what is on the paper.

Someone once said that gratitude is acknowledging that someone has done something for us that we could not have done for ourselves. Lincoln’s note reminded me of that, and that I also must be more proactive in showing my gratitude to others. It takes only a few minutes to do so, but it can change a person’s life, or at the least, their day.

Roofing: How old is your roof? Are there any cracks, leaks, or missing shingles?

Mold: We live in an arid climate and while mold is not common, it can occur and it’s best to get a mold inspection to make sure there isn’t any lurking in dark spaces, not only for your inspection, but also for the health and wellbeing of you and your family.

Windows and Doors: Are they operating correctly? Do they have any visible defects? Make sure that all caulking and weather stripping are in good repair.

any investors are looking to build a portfolio that reflects their socially responsible values, while giving them the potential for solid returns. That’s where SRI Investing, Impact Investing, and ESG Investing may play a role.

In the past, some investors regarded these investment strategies as too restrictive. But over time, improved evaluative data and competitive returns made these strategies more mainstream. Even though SRI, ESG investing, and Impact Investing share many similarities, they differ in some fundamental ways. Read on to learn more.1

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Investing

ESG Investing stands for environmental, social, and governance investing.

The model assesses investments based on specific criteria, such as ethical business practices, environmental conservation, and local community impact.

The popularity of ESG investing has grown: in the United States alone, there are more than 350 ESG mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) available. Just a decade ago, there were only 100 ESG funds.2,3,4,5

SRI (Socially Responsible Investing)

SRI uses criteria from ESG investing to actively eliminate or select investments according to ethical guidelines. SRI investors may use ESG factors to apply negative or positive screens when choosing how to build their portfolio. For example, an investor may wish to allocate a portion of their portfolio to companies that contribute to charitable causes. In the U.S., more than $46.5 trillion are currently invested according to SRI strategies. This is an increase from the $12 trillion invested in SRIs by the end of 2017.4,5,6

Impact Investing

Also known as thematic investing, impact investing differs from the two above. The main goal of impact investing is to secure a positive outcome regardless of profit. For example, an impact investor may use ESG criteria to find and invest in a company dedicated to the development of a cure for cancer no matter the outcome of that investment.5,6 The biggest takeaway? There are plenty of choices to keep your investments aligned with your personal beliefs. No matter how you decide to structure your investments, don’t forget it’s always a smart move to speak with your financial professional before making a major change.

or 85 years Brighton Rotarians have worked to support our local community, as well as aid projects around the world—such as fighting to alleviate Polio and delivering clean water to impoverished populations.

During these uncertain times, local Rotarians have stepped up to support our Brighton community in many ways. Brighton Rotarians have collected over a thousand books to help the local Boys and Girls Club rebuild their library; donated thousands of dollars to local food banks to support families in need; managed the landscaping at Almost Home; and helped to clean up Barr Lake State Park, to name a few. We also provide local schools with dictionaries for 3rd graders, US Constitutions for 5th graders, and award scholarships to high schoolers.

It’s about service over self, and we have big plans to continue our local community projects. On Saturday, October 3rd, the Brighton Rotary Club is hosting a clay shooting event at Colorado Clays to raise funds to continue our good works. We invite everyone to join us and have some fun in the process! In addition to a great competition, lunch will be served, door prizes will be awarded, and other items will be raffled or auctioned--all to support the Rotary’s activities in our community.

This is an outdoor event that allows for appropriate social distancing.

The patient had been unable to make it to their regularly scheduled service appointment because of Covid restrictions and was many months past due for a cleaning. We scheduled an appointment for a family member to bring in the device as soon as possible.

The patient had worn hearing aids faithfully for more than a decade and was never without them. The family member brought the device to me and e plained that the patient had e perienced some very alarming dementia like symptoms when they were no longer able to hear properly out of both ears. The family member e plained they were an ious to get the hearing aid ed as quickly as possible, because during the few days the patient was not able to hear properly, the patient e perienced signi cant confusion, cognitive problems, and memory issues.

Although the spouse and family member assumed would need to send the device to the manufacturer for repair, was fairly certain could it in the oďŹƒce. When e amined the device, found that it

was plugged with a signi cant amount of wa . After cleaning the device it worked perfectly. Later that week spoke to the patient s spouse who e plained that when the patient began wearing both devices again, their demeanor improved signi cantly and everything was back to normal.

O ur c o nv ersatio n c o ntinued and w e th en d isc ussed th e c o rrelatio n between hearing loss and dementia, the importance of wearing hearing aids, the importance of regular maintenance to ensure the devices are working properly, the negative consequences of physical and social isolation, and the importance of using hearing protection.

As a result of that conversation, Blue Ribbon earing & Tinnitus Center wants to remind those who have parents, grandparents or other relatives who are isolated to make an increased e ort to visit, or otherwise communicate via telephone, writing letters, or video call. Also encourage them to be physically active to maintain their physical and mental health.

Healing Digestion Naturally

(Part 2 of 3) Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is an increasingly common illness in the United States, affecting around 14% of the population. The most common symptoms are alternating diarrhea and constipation, abdominal pain, gas and bloating. Since IBS is a syndrome, or aggregate of symptoms, there is no definitive test for diagnosis, and the term can sometimes be used for a wide range of unexplained digestive issues.

Stress is a contributing factor in many cases, and symptoms often worsen during periods of increased stress. With this in mind, finding healthy ways to manage stress are key to IBS treatment. Here are some additional tips on how to heal your digestive system, naturally: Healing Foods: From a Chinese medicine perspective, cold or overly sweet foods are difficult to digest. There is also a concept in Chinese medicine of “dampness” being hard on digestion. Foods that are damp include dairy, fried and greasy foods, coffee, alcohol, and even some fruits like bananas. Easy to digest foods include soups and stews, as well as fermented foods, like sauerkraut and miso.

Acupuncture: A number of acupuncture points directly treat the digestive system, and in addition, I usually add points for stress resiliency and immune system function, which may be compromised with IBS. Over time, people often notice that acupuncture helps them tolerate a wider variety of foods.

Herbs: In Chinese herbology, we select a formula for each individual based on that person’s specific pathology patterns, but there are a couple of important digestive herbs you can find in your grocery store, or maybe even your garden: mint and ginger.

Ginger is a warming herb, while mint is cooling, so you may prefer to consume mint tea in the summer, while saving your ginger root for wintertime.

Baseline Road Water Pipe Installation project complete Offered by: City of Brighton Communications Staff

A

fter about five months, the Baseline Road Water Pipe Installation project between 19th Street and Tower Road is substantially complete.

This pipeline is critical to the long-term serviceability of the water system and adds redundancy in the event of pipe failure.

According to the City’s Utilities Department, the project was difficult due to the size of the waterline (24-inch diameter) and the narrow street section for crews to work in. During utility projects, it’s the department’s goal to maintain traffic flow and access at all times as long as it can be achieved safely. The tighter the work space the harder this is to achieve.

Adding another challenge, this project started around the time when the COVID-19 pandemic hit Colorado, which caused its own set of challenges, like ensuring City and construction employees were safe and healthy at all times. Staff worked with the contractor to implement safety procedures that allowed the project to stay on-schedule throughout the pandemic.

“Working in the right-of-way is never something to be taken lightly,” said Brett Sherman, Utilities Director. “The City of Brighton appreciates the patience people showed during construction and roadway interruptions. While this was a difficult project, the benefit that will be seen by the addition of this line will serve the residents well into the future.”

hree years ago the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched a useful tool, on the www.medicare.gov/hospicecompare website, that can help anyone when choosing a hospice provider. The Hospice Compare website allows you to easily search for hospices by name or location and compare publicly reported data on hospice providers. The data is divided into five categories, including General Information/Level of Care, Conditions, Location of Care, Family Experience of Care and Quality of Care.

The first category, General Information/Level of Care, defines the four levels of care covered in the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Offering all levels of care, including Respite and Continuous care, are important in identifying how hospices can appropriately care for patients.

Data for the second and third categories — Conditions and Locations of Care — are extracted from Medicare claims to show general characteristics of hospice providers.

You can also see the breakdown of where a hospice agency provides most care, such as at home, in an assisted living facility, nursing facility, or inpatient hospice facility.

Finally, the last two categories are most important to consider. These show data on quality measures that hospice agencies are now required to submit. The Family Experience of Care data is a subjective measure of the experience of a patient’s primary caregiver. It comes from the Hospice Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) survey. The data shows what percentage of caregivers would rate their hospice a 9 or 10 (on a scale of 1-10) and what percentage would “definitely” recommend the hospice agency to friends and family.

The last category of data is Quality of Care. It shows the percentage of patients who received at least one visit from a registered nurse, a physician, a nurse practitioner, or a physician assistant in the last three days of life. Also under the Quality of Care tab, you will find scoring on how well hospices are doing when patients are first admitted.

You should expect a good hospice partner to receive high scores on this Quality of Care data. It is essentially a straight-forward measure of whether hospice agencies are completing essential care processes or not.

t Platte Valley Medical Center (PVMC), our top priority is ensuring we continue to create a safe environment of care for our patients, physicians, caregivers and employees. All of our hospitals have put extra precautions in place to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our patients.

Physically Separating our COVID-19 Patients from Other Patients From the beginning of the COVID-19 surge in our communities, we put into practice infection prevention strategies such as: • Grouping together COVID positive and suspected patients • Locating the care of COVID positive and suspected patients in one area to prevent contact with other patients • Dedicating healthcare personnel who only care for patients with COVID In the hospital, this may be a separate unit. In the ED, this may be a separate evaluation area. According to the CDC, this practice of “cohorting” COVID patients is among the most effective means for decreasing the chances of transmitting COVID within the hospital setting.

As a result, if you are going to the hospital for a procedure or emergency care, it’s likely that you will never see or be in contact with a COVID patient nor will the people caring for you.

Masks PVMC follows guidelines on masks from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and local health agencies. The CDC has suggested the use of masks to help limit the spread of COVID-19. All of our hospital staff will wear masks.

We will also require patients and any visitors to bring and wear a clean mask while in our hospitals.

COVID-19 Screening We continue to have a universal symptom screening process in place where everyone who enters our hospitals, which means all staff, patients and visitors, will be screened for symptoms of COVID-19, including recent history of fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, muscle aches and chills. additional guidelines, including testing and isolation, for any member of our staff exhibiting symptoms.

Limiting Visitors and Practicing Social Distancing PVMC has visitor restrictions in place to limit the number of people in our facilities. You may see new configurations of our waiting rooms to comply with social distancing.

Enhanced Cleaning and Disinfecting We have enhanced our already stringent guidelines on cleaning and disinfecting in our hospitals, following guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control, including deep cleaning and disinfecting all operating rooms, procedure rooms, exam rooms, and patient rooms between each use, as well as special cleaning procedures for our waiting rooms.

These guidelines help us choose the right cleaning supplies to use, the right cleaning processes to follow, the timeframes to circulate air in our rooms, and the proper use of ultraviolet (UV) lights to sterilize our rooms and equipment.

Partnering with Federal, State and Local Agencies We will continue to partner with federal, state and local agencies on guidance and support and ensure we are fully aligned with updated guidelines and have all the resources needed to safely provide high quality care for our COVID-19 patients and other patients who trust us with their healthcare needs, whether they are experiencing an emergency, need treatment for a chronic condition or have other serious illnesses.
