Ring! We got the call that we had been waiting for after 24 hours, everyone in my house had tested positive for COVID-19

It did not come as a surprise since my dad had not stopped working during the pandemic and we were all quarantining together As soon as one person had the virus, everyone in my house had a greater chance of getting it too. This was the reality

Abigail Steiner, an epidemiologist who works for the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment and Denver Public Health, shares with us that one of the main reasons why Latino populations in Denver are more susceptible to contracting the virus is because they have a strong tradition of getting together as a community. Most of the time, it is seen as a celebration of culture, but during this pandemic, it is the sad reason why there are so many deaths Not only that, but Ms Steiner also explains that Latino families tend to have larger households, and little room to isolate one person per room For example, a family can contain 2-5 children, grandparents and parents. Living with all your family is never a bad thing, but when people’s health is involved, it makes it even harder to keep everyone safe

As an epidemiologist, Ms Steiner’s job is to study and measure community health for the City and County of Denver During pandemic times, her team is focusing on understanding information where positive cases have come from, processing data into databases, seeing trends and sharing them publicly to inform residents. She informs us that the Latino population is not the only population greatly impacted by COVID-19 The homeless population in Denver has been heavily impacted as well Unfortunately, people experiencing homelessness have higher positive cases because the conditions of where they live are not compatible with CDC recommendations and the ability to access healthcare.

Disparities in Southwest

Where can we start ? How do we grow? Here we show you some facts and solutions

Neighborhoods in the Southwest community are at great disparity compared to other communities in Denver The definition of disparity; "a great difference, economic disparities between different regions of the country imbalance, inequality, disproportion, inconsistency, difference ” Disparities in our community means lack of healthcare access, unequal access to education, low rate of unemployment, eviction, low incomes and many more. According to the Social Correlates of Crime Reports created by Police District 4, at least 40% of Southwest Denver residents do not complete an annual check-up Adults consider themselves to be healthy and use that as an excuse to not get an annual check up There is the belief that the less you go to the hospital, the more money you will save. But in reality, 10% to 16% of residents don't have health care. This is a huge impediment as to why they do not get their annual check up It is important to receive your annual check up because as you grow older, there are more diseases, cancer, mental health disorders or other abnormalities that you might not be aware of

An additional health concern in Southwest Denver is mental health, because during this pandemic, we had to quarantine and be socially isolated from other people. People learned how to work, study, and have fun all while not leaving their home For others who consider themselves to be extroverts, social interaction was not practiced for their own safety which caused a huge change in the way they were able to socialize. Most of these problems already existed before the virus came, but COVID helped bring a greater awareness to the health disparities between the communities

Environment

Just like health, the environment is also different for neighborhoods because there are more green spaces in some communities than others By environment we don't only mean parks, trails and trees, but also lights on the streets for safety, more access to bike lanes and bus stops for those who don’t own cars. The Social Determinants of Crime Report states that the Harvey Park South neighborhood has very little street lighting and few trees Lack of trees and inadequate lighting demotivates families from going outside and getting exercise.

Mental Health Resources

Many of us in our community are facing struggles within our lives due to the pandemic, and many teens and childrens are struggling with online learning. Much of this strain on our lives creates stress and anxiety within us. A larger number of students aren’t receiving any mental health resources because they aren’t in schools with trusted teachers and adults who can send referrals to the health team. Elizabeth Milhaupt from Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy and Rachel Hirsch from Lincoln, both reported that there was a serious decrease in referrals from teacher and staff this year presumably, because students aren’t in an environment where they see teachers everyday

All students in Denver Public Schools have access to School Based Health Centers (SBHC) where they can receive physical and mental health support without having to stress about copayments There are 18 schools in DPS that have School Based Health Centers (see list on right for locations). SBHCs offer numerous services including but not limited to; Individual, group, and family mental health counseling, consultations on physical health visits, dental and oral health screenings, care for asthma and other chronic conditions like depression, prescriptions for medications, routine lab tests, consultations for medication refills, immunizations, assisting in accessing insurance, reproductive health services (only students grades 6-12 can access reproductive care services) like pregnancy testing, birth control evaluation and dispensing, testing and treatments for STIs During the pandemic Denver Health has adapted new ways for patients to be seen Patients can now see doctors and health providers through telephone visits, or a new system called doximity where doctors can video chat with patients To use these services parents must sign the consent form, then any student in grades K-12 may use these services at any point during the school year Some clinics will also accept students' siblings. The Difficulties of E-Learning

Coming back to school has been a difficult challenge for the almost 90,000 Denver Public Schools students spanning kindergarten to 12th grade Some of these students or their families may have lost their jobs or even loved ones, especially in Southwest Denver, one of the hardest-hit regions in all of Denver. In the Westwood neighborhood, for example, the COVID-19 case rate is nearly 5x that of the Washington Park neighborhood according to Denver Public Health

The introduction of synchronous sessions, lectures and course lessons that occur live through video conferencing software, is a serious drawback to both mental and physical health because students sit on zoom calls 4-6 hours a day As the pandemic drags on and stress levels rise, students are less engaged and attendance rates are down because there is no motivation to stay on the computer for so long.

Personally, I have felt less engaged in my learning, and after talking to a number of students throughout DPS, many agree Online school has made learning to any extent more difficult; it’s simply less occupying and seems like more of an option than a requirement With the entirety of the internet at the fingertips of most students, it’s always tempting to play a game, call a friend, or leave class altogether.

But even during these times of a pandemic, youth should stay motivated and focused on their education while reaching out for help whenever they need it I recommend being adaptable to change and staying positive throughout this time period while finding ways to stay active during the day Some ways can include, taking a walk around your house or stepping outside to get some sunshine. As a teacher, a parent, or a friend, giving youth support, checking in on them, and making plans to tackle schoolwork can be some of the most effective ways to support them.

One of the traditions celebrated is Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead It is a tradition celebrated by people of Mexican heritage It combines the ancient tradition of the Aztec by honoring the dead and also celebrating All Saints Day. This holiday is not a day of sadness, but rather a way to celebrate and remember the ones that passed away This is shown by making offerings in their ofrendas, which includes an altar with photos, food, drinks, and their favorite items to aid their spirits on the way back home

y Flessner and I’ve lived in the Harvey Park neighborhood in er for my entire life. I’m 17 years old and I’m currently going to ive Arts Academy. Once I graduate I’m planning on going to te University and getting my degree in arts. I’ve always cared community and making an impact but I wasn’t sure how I could t. In January of 2017, I took the first step and attended the in support of all the women in my life, especially my mom. hs I unfortunately couldn’t make it to any BLM protests, so my support by donating my extra money and signing every e my way. In the past 3 elections besides this 2020 presidential the polls, collecting ballots and making sure every ballot that de it into the city's possession. I wanted to make more of an munity so I sought out ways to help and found an opportunity Public Health to give my help to the community directly This d the coalition Communities That Care (CTC) I’m also working Safety Micro Grant from the Denver Department of Safety that erspectives in southwest Denver I think our perspectives are e not only are we living with everyone in this community, but

also the next upcoming generation holding the future in our hands. In CTC all of the adults have made us feel welcome and wanted and they sought out our perspectives because they value them. Through these projects, I’ve been able to help others in my area find resources and learn about issues that affect not only them but youths as well.
