HAPPY NEW YEAR

From golf and racquets to food and beverage to the boathouse and beyond, our entire team is hard at work making plans and improvements that we hope will make the 2023 season our best one yet.

With optimism, 2023 will see a full return to all Club activities for all to enjoy Dining services will resume Friday, February 10th at the Main Clubhouse, and we are poised to resume outdoor sporting activities as soon as Mother Nature allows. The Golf Clubhouse will re-open for the season beginning Tuesday, April 4th, and will see a gradual increase in hours as the weeks progress

For many of us, the new year brings thoughts of renewal, resolutions or just a “reset” For me, it is a time to ponder all of the new ways we can create special memories for our members and their guests. We look forward to seeing you often in the coming year and doing our best to bring smiles to you…and in turn ourselves!

HOLIDAY 2022

With 2022 behind us, we can’t help but to look back and smile at all of the wonderful memories created this past holiday season

A special thank you to all of the members who joined us for ‘Calling All Elves’, helping us to decorate the Club for this special time of year.

We had an increase in attendance for both the Brunch with Santa (and his special guest, the Grinch!) and the Holiday Brunch. It was so special for us to see so many of you enjoying the Club with your family and friends

Speaking of enjoying the Club with family and friends, if you are interested in booking a private event this year please reach out to me at mlennon@thetuxedoclub.org. I would be delighted to work closely with you to put something special together

BAKING INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit Spray the bottom sides of an 8-inch round cakepan with cooking spray. Next, line the bottom of the pan with waxed paper then coat the paper with cooking spray

In a bowl fitted with an electric mixer, on medium speed, beat the butter, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt until well combined and light in texture Next add in the honey and rum Finally, add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition To complete the batter, stir in the chocolate and almonds and mix an additional 3 minutes.

Scrape the chocolate almond batter into the pan and tap slightly to ensure there are no air gaps

Bake for 25 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached The torta should be slightly fudgy in the center Allow to cool in the pan elevated on a wire rack When cool, run a metal cake spatula around the sides of the cake and invert. Pull off the paper and set the Torta right side up on a platter.

To Make the Chocolate Glaze:

In a small saucepan combine the Water, Honey and Orange Blossom Water and bring to a simmer. Add the sugar and Chocolate Stir until the chocolate has just melted Remove from the heat and transfer the glaze to a mixing bowl and mix in the cold butter, whisking frequently until the glaze has a spreadable consistency, about 20 minutes Spoon the glaze over the Torta allowing some to drip down the sides. Let stand until set.

JUNIOR HIGHLIGHTS

It’s been a busy and successful run for many of our younger members.

First, a big congratulations to Tuxedo’s Carlton Capella who along with Madison Ho (both pictured left), became the first American co-champions at the prestigious British Junior Open (Squash) in the BU13 and GU17 divisions, respectively, capping off what was a record-setting tournament for Team USA, January 4th – 8th, in Birmingham, England.

The British Junior Open is considered to be akin to the World Junior Championships with the world’s top players competing in all age divisions, while the World Juniors fields just the U19 division

Carlton, a two-time U S Junior Champion, is Team USA’s first ever boys champion, having entered the BU13 as the division’s top seed

Capella and Ho are now the fourth and fifth American British Junior Open champions, joining the likes of Michelle Quibell (GU17), Olivia Blatchford Clyne (GU15) and Marina Stefanoni (GU17) who won in 2001, 2007 and 2019, respectively Bravo, Carlton, from all of us at the Club!

In other (good!) news, the top four juniors at the 2023 USCTA Junior Handicap Championships at The Chicago Racquet Club were all Tuxedo Club members: Calliope Yannuzzi – Champion; Paul van Nieuwerburgh – Finalist; and Hazel Christensen and Kurt Mueller (Semi-Finalists) and Tuxedo Club member Theo Yannuzzi was the 2023 Champion of the USCTA Burke Cup at The Tuxedo Club this month

THE TUXEDO CLUB 2023 GOLF CALENDAR

A PRODUCTIVE OFF-SEASON

I am happy to report that we are taking full advantage of the aboveaverage temperatures and have begun work on a number of in-house projects including walk paths, cart paths and tree plantings

We have installed new walk paths through the fescue on the #8 green to the #9 green tee, the #9 green to the #10 forward tee, the #9 green to the #10 forward tee, the #10 green to the #11 yellow tee, the #12 green to the #13 tee, and the #16 forward tee

Additionally, a cart path extension was completed to the left of the #9 green with our asphalt millings material

We have also begun strategically planting trees on hole #11. These tree locations were presented by Rees Jones, Inc. as a way to protect the #14 tee and the #13 green from errant shots from the #11 tee.

If the current weather pattern continues, these trees will be planted this month, which is weeks ahead of schedule The trees to be planted are maple, oak, and elm, and were hand selected from a large tree nursery in New Jersey The specimens range from 30-40 feet and will have an immediate impact on hole #11

From our entire staff, Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you on the course.
