Spring is a time of fresh beginnings, and many of you are taking the season to heart with your renewed commitment to living healthier lives. In this issue of For Your Benefit, you will read about the growing number of wellness activities at 1199SEIU worksites, many headed by Wellness Champions – members just like you who have volunteered to help spread the word about health and fitness.Whether you decide to sign on as a Wellness Champion yourself, join your co-workers for lunchtime walks or come up with your own exercise and nutrition plan, you can choose what works best for you and start taking control of your health now. For one member, Pamela Young, forming a walking group with three of her co-workers at Good Samaritan Lutheran Healthcare Center and joining Weight Watchers helped her lose nearly 75 pounds and stop taking cholesterol and diabetes medications.You can read all of their success stories on pages 6 and 7.

Of course, your Benefit Fund will be with you every step of the way no matter which path you take. In this issue, you will read about tips, tools, workshops and more to make healthy changes in your life.You will also learn how our prenatal workshops can help members have a healthy pregnancy and give babies a healthy head-start.

You are a plan participant, or are being offered the opportunity to enroll as a plan participant, in an employment-based health plan that is certified for participation in the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program. The Early Retiree Reinsurance Program is a federal program that was established under the Affordable Care Act. Under the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program, the federal government reimburses a plan sponsor of an employment-based health plan for some of the costs of healthcare benefits paid on behalf of, or by, early retirees and certain family members of early retirees participating in the employment-based plan. By law, the program expires on January 1, 2014.

Under the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program, your plan sponsor may choose to use any reimbursements it receives from this program to reduce or offset increases in plan participants’ premium contributions, co-payments, deductibles, co-insurance or other out-of-pocket costs. If the plan sponsor chooses to use the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program reimbursements in this way, you, as a plan participant, may experience changes that may be advantageous to you in your health plan coverage terms and conditions, for so long as the reimbursements under this program are available and this plan sponsor chooses to use the reimbursements for this purpose.

A plan sponsor may also use the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program reimbursements to reduce or offset increases in its own costs for maintaining your health benefits coverage, which may increase the likelihood that it will continue to offer health benefits coverage to its retirees and employees and their families.

The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan” under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which means that this plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted, and may not include certain new consumer protections that apply to other plans. However, grandfathered health plans must comply with certain other consumer protections in the Act, for example, the elimination of lifetime limits on benefits. Questions regarding the Fund's status as a grandfathered health plan and which protections apply can be directed to the Fund at (646) 473-9200. Some have helped kick off “Biggest Loser” competitions, while others are spreading the word about our Health Coaching Service. And following the recent Greater New York Fund delegate training on our wellness programs, more than 500 nursing home members signed on as Wellness Champions to help build a culture of health at their worksites as well.

The Wellness Champion program is part of a larger initiative launched by the Union, the employers and the Fund to support worksite wellness activities, and there are lots of ways to get involved.

Members Helping Members Live Healthier Lives Pamela Young and her three co-workers get healthy – and off their medication – by eating better and walking.

After being diagnosed with diabetes eight years ago, Pamela Young knew she had to watch her health carefully but wasn’t always as committed as she could be. So in the spring of 2010 she set out once again to lose weight on her own. She was doing pretty well, too, dropping about 20 pounds over three months. But when Pam visited her doctor to ask why a dog scratch wasn’t going away, he said her body wasn’t healing properly because of her diabetes and that her pattern of losing weight, only to regain it, was leading her down a dangerous path. She had been taking medication for her diabetes as well as for high cholesterol, but her health was still deteriorating.Without some major changes, her doctor said both conditions would lead to more serious complications. “My Fund benefits allowed me to see my doctor regularly and get the medications I needed, but I had to do more,” Pam said. “Getting support was something I hadn’t tried, so I joined Weight Watchers.”

One of Pam’s co-workers was already enrolled in the program, and she got added support when two more of her fellow 1199ers joined.The four women, who work at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Healthcare Center in Delmar, New York, have each lost significant amounts of weight in the last 18 months or so. Pam has lost nearly 75 pounds, going from a size 32 to a size 8 in pants and from a size XX to a Small in the scrubs she wears for her job as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

“I used to wear clothes that would hide my weight, and I don’t have to do that anymore,” she said. “It feels awesome.” Even more important, Pam has lowered her cholesterol and blood sugar levels enough that last summer her doctor told her she no longer needed to take medication for either

condition.“Getting off the meds was one of my goals, so to hear those words made me incredibly happy,” she said. “I did a little jig in his office.”

Pam’s niece Angie Sprague, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Good Samaritan, joined Weight Watchers last January.The two also began walking every day around the grounds at Good Samaritan on their lunch break.Three times around the facility – about a mile and half – is their typical routine, and the exercise, combined with her new eating habits, has helped Angie lose 65 pounds in the last year. She has committed to the Weight Watchers program of eating healthy portions, rather than trying to completely eliminate certain foods. “I’ve learned that anything in moderation is okay, and I use a food diary to keep track of everything I eat, which always includes lots of fruits and vegetables,” Angie said. “Now I can keep up with my two young children; before I felt sluggish and usually watched instead of playing with them.”

Angie and Pam’s walking routine has also helped strengthen the culture of health at Good Samaritan, as the two women are sometimes joined by other co-workers who have found that a midday walk is a great way to fit exercise into their day. “People see us out there every day, getting healthier, and I think they realize that walking is a great preventive measure for everyone,” Pam said.

Debbie Schomaker, who works in the housekeeping department at Good Samaritan, started attending Weight Watchers with Pam and Angie last spring. Debbie has lost more than 20 pounds already and says her goal is to lose 65 pounds.

For Tammy Ryan, an LPN at Good Samaritan, attending Weight Watchers and walking two miles a day for the last two years helped her reach her goal of losing 50 pounds more than six months ago, and she has kept the weight off.

7 Steps to a Healthy Heart We’ve all seen the frightening headlines about heart disease – it’s the number-one killer of both men and women in the U.S., taking more than 616,000 lives each year – but what’s more frightening is that nearly 40 percent of 1199SEIU members have been diagnosed with or are at risk for the condition.

While it can seem as if the cards are stacked against us, there is plenty we can do to prevent it.

If you know you have any of the major risk factors – physical inactivity, poor diet, tobacco use, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight/obesity and diabetes – you need to take the following steps now. Don’t become a statistic.

1199SEIU member Luis Hernandez, a dental assistant at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, attended a prenatal workshop with his wife, Alexsa, as they were preparing to become parents for the first time – and they’re both glad they did.

In August, Alexsa gave birth to twins, a healthy boy and girl, and she said the workshop was a great supplement to her doctor’s care.While her doctor had already stressed the importance of maintaining good health during and after her pregnancy, the workshop gave her specifics on what to expect during labor and delivery, as well as the value of better nutrition. “I learned more about how what I ate would not only affect my health but the health of my baby, or in my case, babies,” Alexsa said. “The workshop also taught me how to listen to my body to know how much to eat. It was great, which was no surprise because we love all the health benefits the Fund offers.”

When choosing between two brands, don’t fall for a new grocery trend that is designed to get you to buy the latest “hot” product.Those little shelf tags that say “all-natural” are gimmicks, not nutrition guides based on FDA guidelines.The best way to make an informed choice is by reading the nutrition label and deciding for yourself.

MAP OUT YOUR SHOPPING TRIP Grocery stores place the healthiest foods – such as low-fat dairy, whole-grain breads, fresh vegetables and fruits and lean meats – around the sides of the store. That’s where you’ll find the foods recommended by the most-effective diets, such as the DASH diet and Weight Watchers (see page 15).

The inner aisles – which you have to pass to reach the healthier items – are where you’ll find processed foods, like cookies, crackers, soda and canned foods that are loaded with salt and other preservatives.

READ THE NUTRITION LABEL Here’s a rule of thumb: the longer the ingredient list, the less healthy the food. Some not-so-healthy things to look for on the label include: artificial flavorings such as MSG, artificial colorings like FD&C citrus red No. 2, trans fats like hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, and preservatives with names such as calcium propionate and disodium EDTA. Of course, you’ll also find plenty of things you want to see on the nutrition label, like the number of servings per package, calories, and high-fiber and vitamin counts.

Miembros que Ayudan a Otros Miembros a Vivir Vidas más Saludables Pamela Young y tres de sus compañeros de trabajo mejoran su salud, y no tienen que seguir tomando sus medicamentos, comiendo mejor y caminando.

Luego de ser diagnosticada con diabetes hace ocho años, Pamela Young sabía que tenía que cuidar rigurosamente de su salud pero no siempre lo hacía. Así que en la primavera de 2010 se decidió una vez más a perder peso por su propia cuenta.

Lo estaba haciendo bastante bien también, bajó cerca de 20 libras en un período de tres meses. Pero cuando Pam visitó a su médico para preguntarle por qué no desaparecía un arañazo que le hizo un perro, él le dijo que su cuerpo no se cicatrizaba bien por su diabetes y que su patrón de perder peso, para después recuperarlo, la estaba llevando por un sendero peligroso. Miembros que Ayudan a Otros Miembros a Vivir Vidas más Saludables Pamela Young y tres de sus compañeros de trabajo mejoran su salud, y no tienen que seguir tomando sus medicamentos, comiendo mejor y caminando.

Luego de ser diagnosticada con diabetes hace ocho años, Pamela Young sabía que tenía que cuidar rigurosamente de su salud pero no siempre lo hacía. Así que en la primavera de 2010 se decidió una vez más a perder peso por su propia cuenta.

Lo estaba haciendo bastante bien también, bajó cerca de 20 libras en un período de tres meses. Pero cuando Pam visitó a su médico para preguntarle por qué no desaparecía un arañazo que le hizo un perro, él le dijo que su cuerpo no se cicatrizaba bien por su diabetes y que su patrón de perder peso, para después recuperarlo, la estaba llevando por un sendero peligroso. That’s where you’ll find the foods recommended by the most-effective diets, such as the DASH diet and Weight Watchers (see page 15).

The inner aisles – which you have to pass to reach the healthier items – are where you’ll find processed foods, like cookies, crackers, soda and canned foods that are loaded with salt and other preservatives.

READ THE NUTRITION LABEL Here’s a rule of thumb: the longer the ingredient list, the less healthy the food. Some not-so-healthy things to look for on the label include: artificial flavorings such as MSG, artificial colorings like FD&C citrus red No. 2, trans fats like hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, and preservatives with names such as calcium propionate and disodium EDTA. Of course, you’ll also find plenty of things you want to see on the nutrition label, like the number of servings per package, calories, and high-fiber and vitamin counts.

You’ve heard it before, but one of the easiest, most affordable ways to add daily exercise to your life is to simply walk more. All you need is a pair of walking shoes.

If you don’t have a walking team at work, or you want to go solo, start out slowly. Begin with 10 to 15 minutes a day, walking at a comfortable pace. If after a few days, you feel up to more, add five minutes a day until you’re walking 30 to 60 minutes a day most days of the week.

Prenatal Care Helps Pregnant Moms and Their Babies Stay Healthy All parents want the best for their children, and a healthy pregnancy is a great way to start.The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that babies of mothers who do not get prenatal care are three times more likely to have low birth weights and more health complications than babies born to mothers who receive the care. 1199SEIU member Luis Hernandez, a dental assistant at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, attended a prenatal workshop with his wife, Alexsa, as they were preparing to become parents for the first time – and they’re both glad they did.

In August, Alexsa gave birth to twins, a healthy boy and girl, and she said the workshop was a great supplement to her doctor’s care.While her doctor had already stressed the importance of maintaining good health during and after her pregnancy, the workshop gave her specifics on what to expect during labor and delivery, as well as the value of better nutrition. “I learned more about how what I ate would not only affect my health but the health of my baby, or in my case, babies,” Alexsa said. “The workshop also taught me how to listen to my body to know how much to eat. It was great, which was no surprise because we love all the health benefits the Fund offers.”

7 Steps to a Healthy Heart We’ve all seen the frightening headlines about heart disease – it’s the number-one killer of both men and women in the U.S., taking more than 616,000 lives each year – but what’s more frightening is that nearly 40 percent of 1199SEIU members have been diagnosed with or are at risk for the condition.

While it can seem as if the cards are stacked against us, there is plenty we can do to prevent it.

If you know you have any of the major risk factors – physical inactivity, poor diet, tobacco use, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight/obesity and diabetes – you need to take the following steps now. Don’t become a statistic.

she tried to do it on her own, she said, being part of a group and having other members to ride the ups and downs with her has made a big difference.

For Tammy Ryan, an LPN at Good Samaritan, attending Weight Watchers and walking two miles a day for the last two years helped her reach her goal of losing 50 pounds more than six months ago, and she has kept the weight off.

For the better part of five years, she needed medication to control her high blood pressure.Tammy was able to manage her condition and monitor her blood pressure with regular visits to her doctor, who always reminded her to eat well and get more physical activity. Members Helping Members Live Healthier Lives Pamela Young and her three co-workers get healthy – and off their medication – by eating better and walking.

After being diagnosed with diabetes eight years ago, Pamela Young knew she had to watch her health carefully but wasn’t always as committed as she could be. So in the spring of 2010 she set out once again to lose weight on her own. She was doing pretty well, too, dropping about 20 pounds over three months. But when Pam visited her doctor to ask why a dog scratch wasn’t going away, he said her body wasn’t healing properly because of her diabetes and that her pattern of losing weight, only to regain it, was leading her down a dangerous path. She had been taking medication for her diabetes as well as for high cholesterol, but her health was still deteriorating.Without some major changes, her doctor said both conditions would lead to more serious complications. “My Fund benefits allowed me to see my doctor regularly and get the medications I needed, but I had to do more,” Pam said. “Getting support was something I hadn’t tried, so I joined Weight Watchers.”

One of Pam’s co-workers was already enrolled in the program, and she got added support when two more of her fellow 1199ers joined.The four women, who work at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Healthcare Center in Delmar, New York, have each lost significant amounts of weight in the last 18 months or so. Pam has lost nearly 75 pounds, going from a size 32 to a size 8 in pants and from a size XX to a Small in the scrubs she wears for her job as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

“I used to wear clothes that would hide my weight, and I don’t have to do that anymore,” she said. “It feels awesome.” Even more important, Pam has lowered her cholesterol and blood sugar levels enough that last summer her doctor told her she no longer needed to take medication for either

condition.“Getting off the meds was one of my goals, so to hear those words made me incredibly happy,” she said. “I did a little jig in his office.”

Pam’s niece Angie Sprague, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Good Samaritan, joined Weight Watchers last January.The two also began walking every day around the grounds at Good Samaritan on their lunch break.Three times around the facility – about a mile and half – is their typical routine, and the exercise, combined with her new eating habits, has helped Angie lose 65 pounds in the last year. She has committed to the Weight Watchers program of eating healthy portions, rather than trying to completely eliminate certain foods. “I’ve learned that anything in moderation is okay, and I use a food diary to keep track of everything I eat, which always includes lots of fruits and vegetables,” Angie said. “Now I can keep up with my two young children; before I felt sluggish and usually watched instead of playing with them.”

Angie and Pam’s walking routine has also helped strengthen the culture of health at Good Samaritan, as the two women are sometimes joined by other co-workers who have found that a midday walk is a great way to fit exercise into their day. “People see us out there every day, getting healthier, and I think they realize that walking is a great preventive measure for everyone,” Pam said.

Debbie Schomaker, who works in the housekeeping department at Good Samaritan, started attending Weight Watchers with Pam and Angie last spring. Debbie has lost more than 20 pounds already and says her goal is to lose 65 pounds.

Spring is a time of fresh beginnings, and many of you are taking the season to heart with your renewed commitment to living healthier lives. You are a plan participant, or are being offered the opportunity to enroll as a plan participant, in an employment-based health plan that is certified for participation in the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program. The Early Retiree Reinsurance Program is a federal program that was established under the Affordable Care Act. Under the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program, the federal government reimburses a plan sponsor of an employment-based health plan for some of the costs of healthcare benefits paid on behalf of, or by, early retirees and certain family members of early retirees participating in the employment-based plan. By law, the program expires on January 1, 2014.

Under the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program, your plan sponsor may choose to use any reimbursements it receives from this program to reduce or offset increases in plan participants’ premium contributions, co-payments, deductibles, co-insurance or other out-of-pocket costs. If the plan sponsor chooses to use the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program reimbursements in this way, you, as a plan participant, may experience changes that may be advantageous to you in your health plan coverage terms and conditions, for so long as the reimbursements under this program are available and this plan sponsor chooses to use the reimbursements for this purpose.

A plan sponsor may also use the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program reimbursements to reduce or offset increases in its own costs for maintaining your health benefits coverage, which may increase the likelihood that it will continue to offer health benefits coverage to its retirees and employees and their families.

The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan” under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which means that this plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted, and may not include certain new consumer protections that apply to other plans. However, grandfathered health plans must comply with certain other consumer protections in the Act, for example, the elimination of lifetime limits on benefits. Questions regarding the Fund's status as a grandfathered health plan and which protections apply can be directed to the Fund at (646) 473-9200. You may also contact the Employee Benefits Security Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, at (866) 444-3272 or www.dol.gov/ebsa/healthreform. This website has a table summarizing which protections do and do not apply to grandfathered health plans.
