The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan” under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act). As permitted by the Affordable Care Act, a grandfathered health plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted.

Being a grandfathered health plan means that this plan may not include certain consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act that apply to other plans, for example, the requirement for an external review process for claims appeals. However, grandfathered health plans must comply with certain other consumer protections in the Affordable Care Act, for example, the elimination of lifetime limits on benefits. Questions regarding which protections apply and which protections do not apply to a grandfathered health plan and what might cause a plan to change from grandfathered health plan status can be directed to the plan administrator at (646) 473-9200. Dear Members, For millions of Americans who do not have access to the kind of accessible, affordable health coverage that 1199SEIU members enjoy, the next few months will bring some exciting changes. Starting in October, people who do not receive health coverage through their jobs or public programs will be able to shop for a plan through government-run exchanges or “marketplaces.” And next year, even more people will be eligible for Medicaid, or for subsidies to help them pay for coverage.

Urges Everyone to Get Flu Shot New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. Nirav Shah says getting vaccinated is the surest way to avoid the flu.

As fall signals the beginning of another flu season, New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. Nirav Shah reminds us once again that the most reliable way to protect ourselves from getting sick is by getting a flu shot. Health officials update the components of the flu vaccination every year to keep pace with new strains of the virus, so getting vaccinated annually is essential. “The flu is actually one of the easiest things to prevent,” said Dr. Shah.

Anyone who works in an enclosed area with a large amount of people, such as teachers, day care providers and, of course, healthcare workers, is at greater risk for getting the flu, Dr. Shah said. But as a healthcare worker, you have the added risk of interacting with patients, many of whom are already sick. “Working in a healthcare institution makes getting a flu shot even more important,” he said, “because it’s the best way to protect yourself, your patients and your family.”

While many people avoid getting the flu shot because they believe it will actually make them sick,

Dr. Shah said there is absolutely no truth to that idea. The flu viruses contained in the vaccine are inactivated (killed), so they cannot cause infection, and the vaccine is tested for safety. Others may say they’re too busy to get vaccinated, but getting a flu shot has become far more convenient, pointed out Dr. Shah, with vaccinations readily available, especially for healthcare workers at their worksites.

Still, he said, there are a certain number of people each year who must learn the value of the flu shot through personal experience. “All it takes is one time, to be flat on your back for days feeling like you were run over by a truck, to realize how important it is to get a flu shot,” he said. “It’s easy, painless and most important, it’s effective.”

All Healthcare Workers Must Get a Flu Shot or Wear a Surgical Mask On July 31, 2013, New York State issued new regulations requiring all healthcare workers who have not been vaccinated against seasonal influenza to wear “a surgical or procedure mask while in areas where patients or residents may be present.” If you do not get a flu shot, you will be required to wear a mask from October through March, which your employer will provide to you at no cost.

Affordable Care Act Update:

What You Need to Know Key parts of the healthcare law – the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – will take effect in 2014. The law that 1199SEIU members fought so hard for will help make health coverage affordable to many who have not had any at all. Starting October 1, there will be a new way for millions of uninsured Americans to buy health insurance in their state through a Health Insurance Exchange. Keep an eye out for a letter from the Benefit Fund, on behalf of your employer, which the new law requires all employers to send to inform their employees about the opportunity to purchase health coverage on the insurance exchanges. Since you already receive a comprehensive package of health benefits through your 1199SEIU Benefit Fund – with little to no out-of-pocket cost to you – you don’t have to do anything when you receive the notice. You will continue to enjoy your health coverage through the Benefit Fund.

Cancer Treatment for the

“Whole Person”

When you or a family member is battling cancer, finding quality care is more important than ever. As an 1199SEIU member, your health benefits provide you with access to a number of excellent cancer centers or hospitals in our network. And did you know that you could access your cancer care at a free-standing site, like the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention? Founded in 2003 in partnership with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Ralph Lauren Center’s sole mission is to provide quality cancer care. Their approach is holistic and begins with prevention. The Ralph Lauren Center is committed to treating the whole person with preventive, comprehensive and coordinated care. “If a patient comes in for a colonoscopy and he is a smoker, for example, we make sure to offer him smoking cessation treatment and support, and address any other conditions or behaviors that affect his health,” said Dr. Gina Villani, the Center’s CEO and Medical Director.

The Center’s philosophy of treating the whole person begins at intake: When someone newly diagnosed with any type of cancer calls to make an appointment, he or she is seen within two days. Every new patient is assigned a “patient navigator,” who serves as an advocate and problem-solver, helping to track appointments, coordinate transportation to and from the Center, find financial resources and, as necessary, ensure care is provided in the patient’s preferred language. If a patient cancels an appointment, a staff member calls him or her to find out why and try to reschedule. “Establishing a relationship with our patients is very important,” Dr.Villani said. “Let’s face it, almost no one wants to get a colonoscopy or a mammogram, but when a patient feels comfortable as soon as they walk in the door, the chances are much better that they’ll undergo preventive screenings and get the care they need.”

Throughout treatment, patients and their families can take advantage of the Center’s cancer support groups and counseling services. The Center also offers classes in yoga and qigong, nutrition workshops and healthy-cooking demonstrations. Even after treatment, patients can take advantage of Cancer Transitions, a six-week series designed to help cancer survivors who have completed treatment within the past 24 months to make the transition

to post-treatment care. The weekly sessions focus on exercise and education, with guest experts who present information about fitness, nutrition, post-treatment medical management, and emotional health and well-being.

Denise Betterson

A Shared Experience Helps Strengthen Our Culture of Health Denise Betterson was motivated by a fellow member’s story to start a weight-loss contest and make healthy changes herself.

Denise Betterson has been a Licensed Practical Nurse for more than 10 years, and like many healthcare workers, she hasn’t always cared for herself as well as she cares for residents at Regeis Care Center in the Bronx. But as a breast cancer survivor, she was determined to take on her Type 2 diabetes with the same will and strength she used to fight her cancer.

In February, after her doctor had reminded her – again – that losing weight and eating healthier foods would help control her diabetes, she began making changes in her diet. When the spring issue of For Your Benefit arrived in her mailbox, reading about the weight-loss contest at Workmen’s Circle MultiCare Center* inspired Denise to suggest a similar “Biggest Loser” competition among her co-workers at Regeis.

“There was so much we had in common, it hit me as soon as I saw the photo on the cover,” she said. “I work in a similar setting and know co-workers who would like to get healthier, too.”

By the end of April, 10 1199SEIU members had entered the competition, and several members began walking around the perimeter of the facility on their lunch hour. At the group’s weekly weigh-in and support session, each participant contributed $5 per week toward prizes for first, second and third place, and after 10 weeks, the “Biggest Losers” were crowned. Nadine Moses lost 15 pounds and took home $500 for first place, Keereen Webb received $100 for second place and Angela Hastings won $50 as the third-place finisher.

Denise lost eight pounds during the competition and has dropped a total of 15 pounds since February, she said, pushing her closer to her goal of losing 25 pounds. She walks regularly, drinks water instead of soda or sugary drinks and eats a diet rich in fruits and vegetables – and low in sugars and unhealthy fats. And while her 15-year-old son has had to adjust to the lack of sweets or other snacks in the house, Denise said he was already a healthy eater and is

One of those friends is Marlene Abad, a nursing assistant at Regeis and an 1199SEIU member for nine years. Marlene’s 23-year-old daughter challenged her to lose weight several months ago, asking, “Don’t you want to see your grandchildren someday?” Marlene remembered. “It was soon after that talk when our ‘Biggest Loser’ contest began, so I was ready.” Her efforts have paid off, as Marlene lost nearly 10 pounds during the contest and is aiming to lose 20 more. She walks to Regeis and home each day – about a mile each way – and has traded typical meals of fried foods and white rice for grilled chicken or tuna on top of a fresh salad.

Marlene and Denise both said the support of their co-workers helped them stay motivated, and were encouraged when they started seeing results in a short time. “Losing weight and eating right have given me more energy, my clothes fit better and I feel good about myself,” Denise said. “But I’ve also learned I can still treat myself to a piece of pie once in a while, without the guilt!”

Don’t Let Stress or Depression Make You Sick Everyone gets stressed.You missed the train and you’re late to work.Your child is sick and you’re scrambling to find child care.

The human body reacts to stress by releasing hormones – adrenalin and cortisol – that boost your blood sugar and oxygen levels, increasing blood flow to the brain and to your muscles. In certain situations, this can be positive: It keeps you alert and helps you avoid danger. But stress without relief can affect not just your mental health but your physical health too.

Stress has been linked to obesity, depression and anxiety, and studies have found that prolonged stress can lead to serious cardiac problems, including heart attacks, and can worsen asthma symptoms. It’s one of the most common triggers for tension headaches, migraines and many gastrointestinal problems, like chronic heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome.

Similarly, if you’re suffering from depression, changes in your brain chemistry can lead to a wide range of physical problems, affecting everything from your heart to your immune system. But everyone gets “the blues” now and then. So how do you know whether you’re just feeling low or may be at risk for depression?

Don’t rely on the quick jolt you get from caffeine or high-sugar snacks.Your energy will wear off and you’ll wind up feeling more tired than you did before.

Get moving

Research shows physical activity can help relieve symptoms of stress and depression, especially rhythmic, repetitive exercises like walking, using an elliptical machine or swimming. Exercise lowers your stress hormone levels and releases endorphins – the brain’s feel-good chemical – so your muscles will get a good workout and you’ll feel relaxed and energized at the same time.

Meditate If you’re feeling stressed, taking a few slow, deep breaths can slow your heart rate and relax your muscles. And just a few minutes of meditation each day can help improve your mood and relieve stress and depression. A study published in the Annals of Family Medicine even found that people who meditate made it through the winter with fewer – and less severe – colds and bouts of the flu.

Five Steps to Healthy Sleep Getting a good night’s sleep is an important part of staying healthy, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. If you have trouble falling asleep, or staying asleep through the night, these tips can improve your sleep quality and help you wake up feeling refreshed.

Stick to a sleep schedule. Make an effort to go to bed and wake up at about the same time each day. “Catching up” by sleeping later on your days off won’t fully make up for a lack of sleep during the workweek – and will make it harder when you do have to get up for work.

Avoid caffeine. Try to avoid coffee, colas, certain teas and chocolate in the late afternoon or early evening. The caffeine in a cup of coffee can make it hard for you to fall asleep as long as eight hours after you drink it, so stick to decaf after dinner.

Relax before bed. To unwind after a busy day, try to set aside at least 15 minutes before going to bed just to relax.

Make reading, listening to music, taking a warm bath or some other calming activity part of your bedtime ritual.

Create a healthful sleeping environment. This often means cool, dark and quiet. If you have trouble falling asleep, think about using room-darkening shades, earplugs, or a fan or other device that creates “white noise” to create a sleep-friendly environment. Limit anything in your bedroom that might distract you, such as a TV, cell phone or computer.

See your healthcare provider if you continue to have trouble sleeping. If you have a hard time falling or staying asleep several days a week for more than a few weeks, visit your healthcare provider to find out whether there’s an underlying problem and what other treatments might help.

El cuerpo humano reacciona ante el estrés liberando hormonas, adrenalina y cortisol, que elevan sus niveles de azúcar y oxígeno en la sangre, incrementando el flujo sanguíneo al cerebro y a sus músculos. Pero el estrés sin alivio puede afectar no solo su salud mental sino también su salud física.

El estrés ha sido vinculado a la obesidad, la depresión y la ansiedad, y se ha descubierto en estudios que el estrés prolongado puede conducir a graves problemas cardíacos, inclusive ataques al corazón, y puede empeorar los síntomas del asma. The Big Health Benefits of Small Changes

It’s autumn, and the perfect time for a fresh start toward healthier eating habits.

Studies show that making one small change can improve your health and add up to more positive results. Small improvements work because they’re manageable.You’re more likely to stick with a change if it’s a small shift, not a major overhaul. Making the commitment to change your eating habits is the first step. Of course, we know it can be a challenge, so we’ve come up with some solutions for the most common obstacles people face when making changes to their diet.

Challenge #1: I just don’t know where to begin.

Solution: Think small.

Research shows that small, lasting changes in your diet – drinking water instead of soda or walking five minutes longer each day – help people lose about four times more weight than traditional calorie restriction and physical activity programs. Try adding two extra servings of fruits and vegetables to your diet, gradually working up to seven servings a day.

Challenge #2: How do I know what’s healthy?

Solution: Read your labels.

If you want to know if a food is healthy or not, read your food nutrition labels. Pay close attention to three sections of the label: the serving size and number of servings, the number of calories in a serving and the list of ingredients. A typical serving of pretzels may be one ounce, but some snack-size bags can contain one and a half ounces. Eat the

whole bag, and you’re getting more calories than you bargained for. When reading the ingredient list, remember: the first ingredients make up the largest part of the product. Look for foods that list healthy ingredients up front, like whole grains, and also look for heart-healthy monounsaturated fats like olive, canola or peanut oils. Steer clear of foods that have sugar and fats (especially partially hydrogenated oils) at the top of the list.

Challenge #3: I know what to eat – I just don’t know when to stop eating.

Solution: Learn portion control tips and take charge.

Research shows that as portions in restaurants and stores have gotten bigger, so have your portions at home, and people unintentionally eat more calories than they realize. So if you’re going out to eat with a friend or family member, split a dish, and take the phrase “supersize it” out of your vocabulary. Use visual cues to determine the right portion size. For proteins, like chicken or fish, a portion is about the

Denise Betterson

Una Experiencia Compartida Ayuda a Fortalecer Nuestra Cultura de la Salud Denise Betterson fue motivada por la historia de un compañero miembro para iniciar un concurso de bajar de peso y hacer cambios saludables en su propia vida.

Denise Betterson ha trabajado como enfermera auxiliar diplomada durante más de 10 años, y al igual que muchos trabajadores de la salud, ella misma no se ha cuidado tanto como cuida a los residentes del Regeis Care Center en el Bronx. Pero como sobreviviente del cáncer de mama, estaba decidida a combatir su diabetes de Tipo 2 con la misma voluntad y fortaleza que utilizó para combatir su cáncer. size of a deck of cards. Potatoes, rice, pasta or other carbohydrates should be the size of a rounded handful, and fats like peanut butter and salad dressings should be one tablespoon. Another way to rein in your eating is to avoid letting yourself get too hungry; eat regular snacks like fruit or a small salad before a meal to take the edge off your hunger. And use a smaller dish, so even if you do clean your plate, you’ll be eating less food overall.

Finally, take your time – it takes up to 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you’re full.

Cooking at home can be more manageable than you may think. One-dish meals like stir-frys and casseroles are perfect for getting food on the table in less than 30 minutes. You can even try preparing meals on the weekend – pasta sauce, chicken breasts or chopped vegetables for salad – and reheating (or throwing together a salad) on busy days. At lunchtime, skip the takeout and bring a brownbag lunch with you. Just remember these three ingredients – lots of vegetables, lean protein and whole grains – for a wholesome meal every time.

Challenge #5: Healthy food costs too much.

Solution: Preparing food at home with low-cost health options saves money and puts you in control.

Stretch your food budget by adding more beans and peas to your diet. Legumes like black beans, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), lima beans, blackeyed peas and lentils are protein powerhouses with nutrients like iron and zinc. (See the sidebar for a quick and delicious lima bean dip.) Legumes are a unique food – because of their high nutrient content, they can be considered a protein or a vegetable, counting toward your total number of vegetable servings per day. Beans cost a fraction of the price of meat and processed foods and can be bought in bulk – along with grains, nuts and rice – saving you money.

Low-Fat Lima Bean Spread with Cumin & Herbs Ingredients: 1 10-ounce package of frozen lima beans (you can also use frozen edamame beans) 4 cloves garlic, crushed and peeled 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 teaspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste Freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill

Preparation:

Bring a large saucepan of lightly salted water to a boil. Add lima beans, garlic and crushed red pepper; cook until the beans are tender (about 10 minutes).

Remove from heat and let cool in the liquid. Drain the beans and garlic.

Transfer to a food processor or blender (or mash by hand). Add oil, lemon juice, cumin, salt and pepper; process until smooth. Scrape into a bowl, stir in mint, cilantro and dill. Serve with whole-grain pita chips or cut-up vegetables.

Spending more of your food budget on beans can boost your health and save you money, especially if you buy beans in bulk.

Beans are nutritious no matter how they’re prepared – dried, canned or frozen – and provide an excellent source of protein and fiber, vitamin B and iron. While just as nutritious as frozen or dry beans, canned beans usually have added salt – some as much as 20 to 30 percent of your daily sodium requirement – so check the label and look for low- or no-salt brands. (You can also rinse your beans to remove up to 40 percent of the sodium.)

Preparing Dry Beans:

Thoroughly rinse and drain dry beans before soaking, getting rid of damaged beans. You can rehydrate beans using one of these methods: s 1UICK HOT SOAK Cover beans with water and boil for two minutes. Cover pot; soak for one to four hours. What’s the best exercise program for you?

The one that you’ll stick with! That’s what the latest research studies show. Over the long haul, it’s best to pick an exercise that you enjoy because boredom (and injury) can make most people give up on their exercise program. Beyond that, make sure your program has a good mix of aerobic (cardio) exercise and strength or resistance training, depending on your fitness goals. Girls and Boys Should Get the HPV Vaccine If you have a daughter or son, make sure your child is vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV), which is one of the primary causes of cervical and other cancers. The HPV vaccine has only been available since 2006, but U.S. health officials say it has already cut the infection rate in half among girls 14 to 19 years old, from 7.2 percent in 2006 to 3.6 percent in 2010. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at 11 or 12 years of age. The vaccine is given in three doses over a six-month period – and your Benefit Fund covers the shots – so make an appointment with your healthcare provider today and protect your child(ren) against HPV.

Being Heart Healthy Can Also Reduce Your Cancer Risk A two-decade study of more than 13,000 adults found people who follow six or seven of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) seven steps to reduce heart disease also lowered their risk of cancer by 51 percent, compared with those who followed none of the steps. The AHA’s “Life’s Simple 7” steps include being physically active, keeping a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, maintaining healthy cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and not smoking.

Over the long haul, it’s best to pick an exercise that you enjoy because boredom (and injury) can make most people give up on their exercise program. Denise Betterson

Una Experiencia Compartida Ayuda a Fortalecer Nuestra Cultura de la Salud Denise Betterson fue motivada por la historia de un compañero miembro para iniciar un concurso de bajar de peso y hacer cambios saludables en su propia vida.

Denise Betterson ha trabajado como enfermera auxiliar diplomada durante más de 10 años, y al igual que muchos trabajadores de la salud, ella misma no se ha cuidado tanto como cuida a los residentes del Regeis Care Center en el Bronx. Pero como sobreviviente del cáncer de mama, estaba decidida a combatir su diabetes de Tipo 2 con la misma voluntad y fortaleza que utilizó para combatir su cáncer. size of a deck of cards. Potatoes, rice, pasta or other carbohydrates should be the size of a rounded handful, and fats like peanut butter and salad dressings should be one tablespoon. Another way to rein in your eating is to avoid letting yourself get too hungry; eat regular snacks like fruit or a small salad before a meal to take the edge off your hunger. And use a smaller dish, so even if you do clean your plate, you’ll be eating less food overall.

Finally, take your time – it takes up to 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you’re full.

Cooking at home can be more manageable than you may think. One-dish meals like stir-frys and casseroles are perfect for getting food on the table in less than 30 minutes. You can even try preparing meals on the weekend – pasta sauce, chicken breasts or chopped vegetables for salad – and reheating (or throwing together a salad) on busy days. At lunchtime, skip the takeout and bring a brownbag lunch with you. Just remember these three ingredients – lots of vegetables, lean protein and whole grains – for a wholesome meal every time.

Challenge #5: Healthy food costs too much.

Solution: Preparing food at home with low-cost health options saves money and puts you in control.

Stretch your food budget by adding more beans and peas to your diet. Legumes like black beans, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), lima beans, blackeyed peas and lentils are protein powerhouses with nutrients like iron and zinc. (See the sidebar for a quick and delicious lima bean dip.) Legumes are a unique food – because of their high nutrient content, they can be considered a protein or a vegetable, counting toward your total number of vegetable servings per day. Beans cost a fraction of the price of meat and processed foods and can be bought in bulk – along with grains, nuts and rice – saving you money.

Low-Fat Lima Bean Spread with Cumin & Herbs Ingredients: 1 10-ounce package of frozen lima beans (you can also use frozen edamame beans) 4 cloves garlic, crushed and peeled 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 teaspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste Freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill

Preparation:

Bring a large saucepan of lightly salted water to a boil. Add lima beans, garlic and crushed red pepper; cook until the beans are tender (about 10 minutes).

Remove from heat and let cool in the liquid. Drain the beans and garlic.

Transfer to a food processor or blender (or mash by hand). Add oil, lemon juice, cumin, salt and pepper; process until smooth. Scrape into a bowl, stir in mint, cilantro and dill. Serve with whole-grain pita chips or cut-up vegetables.

Learn the Basics About Beans!

Spending more of your food budget on beans can boost your health and save you money, especially if you buy beans in bulk.

Beans are nutritious no matter how they’re prepared – dried, canned or frozen – and provide an excellent source of protein and fiber, vitamin B and iron. While just as nutritious as frozen or dry beans, canned beans usually have added salt – some as much as 20 to 30 percent of your daily sodium requirement – so check the label and look for low- or no-salt brands. (You can also rinse your beans to remove up to 40 percent of the sodium.)

Preparing Dry Beans:

Thoroughly rinse and drain dry beans before soaking, getting rid of damaged beans. You can rehydrate beans using one of these methods: s 1UICK HOT SOAK Cover beans with water and boil for two minutes. Cover pot; soak for one to four hours. It’s autumn, and the perfect time for a fresh start toward healthier eating habits.

Studies show that making one small change can improve your health and add up to more positive results. Small improvements work because they’re manageable.You’re more likely to stick with a change if it’s a small shift, not a major overhaul. Making the commitment to change your eating habits is the first step. Of course, we know it can be a challenge, so we’ve come up with some solutions for the most common obstacles people face when making changes to their diet.

Challenge #1: I just don’t know where to begin.

Solution: Think small.

Research shows that small, lasting changes in your diet – drinking water instead of soda or walking five minutes longer each day – help people lose about four times more weight than traditional calorie restriction and physical activity programs. Try adding two extra servings of fruits and vegetables to your diet, gradually working up to seven servings a day.

Challenge #2: How do I know what’s healthy?

Solution: Read your labels.

If you want to know if a food is healthy or not, read your food nutrition labels. Pay close attention to three sections of the label: the serving size and number of servings, the number of calories in a serving and the list of ingredients. A typical serving of pretzels may be one ounce, but some snack-size bags can contain one and a half ounces. Eat the

whole bag, and you’re getting more calories than you bargained for. When reading the ingredient list, remember: the first ingredients make up the largest part of the product. Look for foods that list healthy ingredients up front, like whole grains, and also look for heart-healthy monounsaturated fats like olive, canola or peanut oils. Steer clear of foods that have sugar and fats (especially partially hydrogenated oils) at the top of the list.

Challenge #3: I know what to eat – I just don’t know when to stop eating.

Solution: Learn portion control tips and take charge.

Research shows that as portions in restaurants and stores have gotten bigger, so have your portions at home, and people unintentionally eat more calories than they realize. So if you’re going out to eat with a friend or family member, split a dish, and take the phrase “supersize it” out of your vocabulary. Use visual cues to determine the right portion size. For proteins, like chicken or fish, a portion is about the

Depresión le Enfermen Todos sufrimos de estrés. Usted pierde el tren y se retrasa para llegar al trabajo. Su hijo/a está enfermo/a y está desesperado por encontrar a alguien que lo/la cuide. El cuerpo humano reacciona ante el estrés liberando hormonas, adrenalina y cortisol, que elevan sus niveles de azúcar y oxígeno en la sangre, incrementando el flujo sanguíneo al cerebro y a sus músculos. En determinadas situaciones esto puede ser positivo: Le mantiene alerta y le ayuda a evitar el peligro.

Pero el estrés sin alivio puede afectar no solo su salud mental sino también su salud física.

El estrés ha sido vinculado a la obesidad, la depresión y la ansiedad, y se ha descubierto en estudios que el estrés prolongado puede conducir a graves problemas cardíacos, inclusive ataques al corazón, y puede empeorar los síntomas del asma. Five Steps to Healthy Sleep Getting a good night’s sleep is an important part of staying healthy, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. If you have trouble falling asleep, or staying asleep through the night, these tips can improve your sleep quality and help you wake up feeling refreshed.

Stick to a sleep schedule. Make an effort to go to bed and wake up at about the same time each day. “Catching up” by sleeping later on your days off won’t fully make up for a lack of sleep during the workweek – and will make it harder when you do have to get up for work.

Avoid caffeine. Try to avoid coffee, colas, certain teas and chocolate in the late afternoon or early evening. The caffeine in a cup of coffee can make it hard for you to fall asleep as long as eight hours after you drink it, so stick to decaf after dinner.

Relax before bed. To unwind after a busy day, try to set aside at least 15 minutes before going to bed just to relax.

Make reading, listening to music, taking a warm bath or some other calming activity part of your bedtime ritual.

Create a healthful sleeping environment. This often means cool, dark and quiet. If you have trouble falling asleep, think about using room-darkening shades, earplugs, or a fan or other device that creates “white noise” to create a sleep-friendly environment. Limit anything in your bedroom that might distract you, such as a TV, cell phone or computer.

See your healthcare provider if you continue to have trouble sleeping. If you have a hard time falling or staying asleep several days a week for more than a few weeks, visit your healthcare provider to find out whether there’s an underlying problem and what other treatments might help.

Don’t rely on the quick jolt you get from caffeine or high-sugar snacks.Your energy will wear off and you’ll wind up feeling more tired than you did before.

Get moving

Don’t Let Stress or Depression Make You Sick Everyone gets stressed.You missed the train and you’re late to work.Your child is sick and you’re scrambling to find child care.

The human body reacts to stress by releasing hormones – adrenalin and cortisol – that boost your blood sugar and oxygen levels, increasing blood flow to the brain and to your muscles. In certain situations, this can be positive: It keeps you alert and helps you avoid danger. But stress without relief can affect not just your mental health but your physical health too.

Stress has been linked to obesity, depression and anxiety, and studies have found that prolonged stress can lead to serious cardiac problems, including heart attacks, and can worsen asthma symptoms. It’s one of the most common triggers for tension headaches, migraines and many gastrointestinal problems, like chronic heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome.

Similarly, if you’re suffering from depression, changes in your brain chemistry can lead to a wide range of physical problems, affecting everything from your heart to your immune system. But everyone gets “the blues” now and then. So how do you know whether you’re just feeling low or may be at risk for depression?

Denise Betterson

A Shared Experience Helps Strengthen Our Culture of Health Denise Betterson was motivated by a fellow member’s story to start a weight-loss contest and make healthy changes herself.

Denise Betterson has been a Licensed Practical Nurse for more than 10 years, and like many healthcare workers, she hasn’t always cared for herself as well as she cares for residents at Regeis Care Center in the Bronx. But as a breast cancer survivor, she was determined to take on her Type 2 diabetes with the same will and strength she used to fight her cancer.

In February, after her doctor had reminded her – again – that losing weight and eating healthier foods would help control her diabetes, she began making changes in her diet. When the spring issue of For Your Benefit arrived in her mailbox, reading about the weight-loss contest at Workmen’s Circle MultiCare Center* inspired Denise to suggest a similar “Biggest Loser” competition among her co-workers at Regeis.

“There was so much we had in common, it hit me as soon as I saw the photo on the cover,” she said. “I work in a similar setting and know co-workers who would like to get healthier, too.”

By the end of April, 10 1199SEIU members had entered the competition, and several members began walking around the perimeter of the facility on their lunch hour. At the group’s weekly weigh-in and support session, each participant contributed $5 per week toward prizes for first, second and third place, and after 10 weeks, the “Biggest Losers” were crowned. She walks to Regeis and home each day – about a mile each way – and has traded typical meals of fried foods and white rice for grilled chicken or tuna on top of a fresh salad.

Marlene and Denise both said the support of their co-workers helped them stay motivated, and were encouraged when they started seeing results in a short time. “Losing weight and eating right have given me more energy, my clothes fit better and I feel good about myself,” Denise said. “But I’ve also learned I can still treat myself to a piece of pie once in a while, without the guilt!”

And did you know that you could access your cancer care at a free-standing site, like the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention? Founded in 2003 in partnership with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Ralph Lauren Center’s sole mission is to provide quality cancer care. Their approach is holistic and begins with prevention. The Ralph Lauren Center is committed to treating the whole person with preventive, comprehensive and coordinated care. “If a patient comes in for a colonoscopy and he is a smoker, for example, we make sure to offer him smoking cessation treatment and support, and address any other conditions or behaviors that affect his health,” said Dr. Gina Villani, the Center’s CEO and Medical Director.

The Center’s philosophy of treating the whole person begins at intake: When someone newly diagnosed with any type of cancer calls to make an appointment, he or she is seen within two days. Every new patient is assigned a “patient navigator,” who serves as an advocate and problem-solver, helping to track appointments, coordinate transportation to and from the Center, find financial resources and, as necessary, ensure care is provided in the patient’s preferred language. If a patient cancels an appointment, a staff member calls him or her to find out why and try to reschedule. “Establishing a relationship with our patients is very important,” Dr.Villani said. “Let’s face it, almost no one wants to get a colonoscopy or a mammogram, but when a patient feels comfortable as soon as they walk in the door, the chances are much better that they’ll undergo preventive screenings and get the care they need.”

Throughout treatment, patients and their families can take advantage of the Center’s cancer support groups and counseling services. The Center also offers classes in yoga and qigong, nutrition workshops and healthy-cooking demonstrations. Urges Everyone to Get Flu Shot New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. Nirav Shah says getting vaccinated is the surest way to avoid the flu.

As fall signals the beginning of another flu season, New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. Nirav Shah reminds us once again that the most reliable way to protect ourselves from getting sick is by getting a flu shot. Health officials update the components of the flu vaccination every year to keep pace with new strains of the virus, so getting vaccinated annually is essential. “The flu is actually one of the easiest things to prevent,” said Dr. Shah.

Anyone who works in an enclosed area with a large amount of people, such as teachers, day care providers and, of course, healthcare workers, is at greater risk for getting the flu, Dr. Shah said. But as a healthcare worker, you have the added risk of interacting with patients, many of whom are already sick. “Working in a healthcare institution makes getting a flu shot even more important,” he said, “because it’s the best way to protect yourself, your patients and your family.”

While many people avoid getting the flu shot because they believe it will actually make them sick,

Dr. Shah said there is absolutely no truth to that idea. The flu viruses contained in the vaccine are inactivated (killed), so they cannot cause infection, and the vaccine is tested for safety. Others may say they’re too busy to get vaccinated, but getting a flu shot has become far more convenient, pointed out Dr. Shah, with vaccinations readily available, especially for healthcare workers at their worksites.

Still, he said, there are a certain number of people each year who must learn the value of the flu shot through personal experience. “All it takes is one time, to be flat on your back for days feeling like you were run over by a truck, to realize how important it is to get a flu shot,” he said. “It’s easy, painless and most important, it’s effective.”

Dear Members, For millions of Americans who do not have access to the kind of accessible, affordable health coverage that 1199SEIU members enjoy, the next few months will bring some exciting changes. Starting in October, people who do not receive health coverage through their jobs or public programs will be able to shop for a plan through government-run exchanges or “marketplaces.” And next year, even more people will be eligible for Medicaid, or for subsidies to help them pay for coverage.

In this issue of For Your Benefit, we highlight some of your benefits, like coverage for cancer treatment. And since protecting our mental and emotional health is just as important as keeping our bodies healthy, we have included information about how you can recognize symptoms of stress and anxiety, and get the care you need through your mental health coverage.

As flu season approaches, we also need to take extra precautions to protect our physical health. In this issue, New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. Nirav Shah stresses the importance of getting a flu shot to avoid contracting the virus. Covered by the Fund, the vaccine is the best way to protect yourself, your family and your patients.

a Garantizar un Embarazo Saludable El 7 de diciembre, únase a otros futuros padres en nuestro siguiente Taller Prenatal del Departamento de Bienestar, donde recibirá información importante sobre cómo mantenerse saludable durante el embarazo y después de que nazca su hijo/a, cómo prepararse para la fecha de parto y qué puede esperar durante la labor de parto y el alumbramiento. Tanto si es su primer hijo como si es el tercero, también aprenderá cómo tener un embarazo saludable con menos complicaciones.

El taller incluirá todo, desde cómo mantenerse saludable durante el embarazo hasta información sobre la labor de parto y el alumbramiento, lo que se debe saber sobre el embarazo y el nuevo bebé y mucho más. ¡Su pareja será bienvenida también!
