The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan� under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act). As permitted by the Affordable Care Act, a grandfathered health plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted. Being a grandfathered health plan means that this plan may not include certain consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act that apply to other plans, for example, the requirement for an external review process for claims appeals. However, grandfathered health plans must comply with certain other consumer protections in the Affordable Care Act, for example, the elimination of lifetime limits on benefits. Questions regarding which protections apply and which protections do not apply to a grandfathered health plan and what might cause a plan to change from grandfathered health plan status can be directed to the plan administrator at (646) 473-9200. Message from the Executive Director Dear Members,

While providing access to quality healthcare is our top priority, we recognize that getting and staying healthy means taking care of ourselves – exercising, eating well and paying attention to our emotional well-being.

All across the country, more and more workers have been forced to pay for a larger share of their coverage as healthcare costs continue to increase. Not so with 1199SEIU members who enjoy comprehensive health coverage through the National Benefit Fund (NBF). In this issue of For Your Benefit, you will read about the new collective bargaining agreement reached between the Union and the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes of New York, which serves as a model for most contracts covering the NBF. The new agreement fully funds benefits at the current level while, as in the past, requiring the NBF to find more savings opportunities. Along with the agreement, you will also read about some of the programs that we have created – and that you make work – which will help continue to preserve your benefits with no out-of-pocket costs.

Making healthy changes is not easy, but it can be lifesaving. In this issue you will read about one member – Merle Warren, a Registered Nurse at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital – who changed the way she ate and started exercising to lower her blood pressure and lose 40 pounds. She admits that it was a struggle at times, but the reward of feeling healthy again has made it all worthwhile.

Benefits Update & News

Protects Benefits for Four More Years This summer, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes of New York reached a tentative four-year collective bargaining agreement – which takes effect October 1, 2014 – that preserves comprehensive health coverage and defined pension benefits for members who work at League institutions. As many of you know, this new agreement serves as a model for other contracts still to be negotiated that cover members who participate in the National Benefit Fund. For members at League institutions, the contract continues to protect against out-of-pocket costs – meaning no premiums or co-

payments for covered services. The agreement also maintains retirement security in pension benefits and even provides for two future retiree bonuses.

As always, you and your fellow members have played an important part in preserving your benefits by following the rules of your Benefit Fund’s prescription programs and prior authorization process, and by using our participating provider network. Going forward, we will continue to explore cost containment programs like these to help ensure that all 1199SEIU members can access the care they need when they need it.

Thanks to the cooperation of all our members with covered dependents, the National Benefit Fund (NBF) completed its Dependent Eligibility Verification Program in March 2014. Working with HMS Employer Solutions (HMS), a firm that specializes in healthcare eligibility verification, we updated our eligibility records so that we can continue to provide you and your eligible spouses and children with quality healthcare coverage while protecting benefit dollars. HMS contacted more than 77,000 NBF active members and retirees to update the eligibility information on record for their family members. The program allowed us to determine which dependents (children, spouses and young adults) were currently eligible for benefits and to dis-enroll those who were no longer eligible.

If You Suspect Fraud or Abuse, Report It to the Fund Most healthcare providers are trustworthy and committed to patient-centered care, but as in any large industry, there are some who try to take advantage of the system. To help protect yourself and the Fund against fraud and abuse, remember to read your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements carefully when you receive them in the mail (or use “My Account” to review your claims activity online), and make sure the care you received is billed correctly. If you notice anything unusual on your EOB statements or when you access “My Account,” such as charges for services you did not receive, or if you believe a provider is using the Fund’s benefits fraudulently for any reason, please email our tipline at BenefitFraud@1199Funds.org or call our Fraud and Abuse Hotline at (646) 473-6148. If you wish, you can report suspected fraud anonymously. With your help, we can preserve valuable healthcare dollars and protect all of our members’ benefits.

As you can see in the chart below, some dependents were initially dis-enrolled because our records indicated that they were no longer eligible for benefits and HMS did not receive the necessary documents to verify their eligibility. However, we extended the deadline for the program so that members who had not responded or who had not submitted sufficient documentation would have extra time to verify or update the status of their dependents; as a result, some of those dependents were re-enrolled.

Merle Warren

Changing her diet and exercising regularly has helped Merle Warren lose 40 pounds, get her blood pressure under control and feel great about life.

What a difference a year can make. When Registered Nurse Merle Warren visited her doctor in September 2013, her knees ached, she weighed 213 pounds and she learned that her blood pressure was high.These days, she walks and jogs four times a week on knees that feel great, her blood pressure is back to normal, her clothes fit better and her energy level is the best it’s ever been. She is also 40 pounds lighter. “I’ve gone from a size 14 to a size 8, which makes me feel good every day when I look in the mirror,� she said. “But it’s about even more than that – being healthy is helping me enjoy life.�

on fried foods, which she admits was a struggle early on. She began making a chicken or a fish recipe for dinner nearly every night, along with fresh vegetables, and replaced unhealthy snacks like chips or candy with nuts, yogurt and fruit. What’s more, she stopped drinking sugary drinks of any kind (she used to love “juice� drinks, which often contain as much sugar as a slice of chocolate cake) and switched to water. “It was very challenging at first, even more than sticking with the exercise,� Merle said, “but it has become easier over time.�

Her former weight meant she had to watch her grandchildren play, rather than play with them; yet today, it’s more often the young ones who have to keep up with her. “Like most kids, they love to run around,� Merle said. “We run, jog, walk together, you name it. And we always do jumping jacks� – something she said she wouldn’t have dreamed of even trying a few years ago.

Not only have the changes that were hard at the beginning turned into healthy habits, but the payoff has been even better than she had hoped. Whether she’s caring for patients at work or playing with her grandchildren at home, she now has a more positive outlook – and more energy. “Everyone in my life, my family, friends, co-workers, have been so supportive, even when I was struggling,� Merle said. “Sharing my success with them and being an example for others is probably the best reward of all.�

But last September, when her doctor told her she needed to lose weight and get her blood pressure down, Merle started doing a lot of things she never thought she’d do, like walking three or four times a week. She began slowly, walking for 15 minutes at a moderate pace, then added more time to build stamina; before long, the workouts got easier and she felt better. As she started losing weight and getting more fit, Merle began skipping the crosstown bus after work at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan and walking from Second Avenue to Eighth Avenue before taking the subway home to Queens. Now her regular workout includes three miles of cardio activity – half walking and half jogging – four times a week.

As much as she has come to love exercising, Merle stressed that she’d never have lost the weight – and kept it off – without also changing her diet. First, she said, she stopped eating fast food and cut way back

Sea cual sea el origen, todos podemos aprender a controlar la preocupación, la ira o la irritación que podemos llegar a sentir en esos momentos. Prevenir y reducir el estrés puede ayudarle a controlar su peso, dormir mejor e incluso mejorar sus relaciones. It’s a troubling statistic: healthcare workers suffer on-the-job injuries more often than workers in any other field.

In 2010, healthcare employers reported nearly 654,000 workplace injuries and illnesses, and Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that nursing aides, transporters and attendants have the highest rates of injuries affecting their bones, joints and muscles compared to all other workers.

Whether or not you’ve been injured at work, you need to know what you can do to protect your back.

A veces todos comemos como respuesta a nuestros estados de ánimo, pero si usted se encuentra eligiendo constantemente malas opciones de alimentos cuando se siente estresado, deprimido o ansioso, llegó el momento de romper ese hábito poco saludable. 1. Answer: B and C. Sleeping on your side or your back is better for your back than sleeping on your stomach, and supporting your knees with a pillow helps take stress off your back muscles.

Answer: D. For most people, back pain resolves itself.

Making healthy lifestyle changes – like exercising regularly and improving posture – helps the pain go away in most cases. Surgery is usually a last-choice option for when these treatments don’t bring relief. Of course, if your back pain is the result of a fall or other injury, is accompanied by abdominal pain or fever, or causes bowel or bladder problems, you should see your doctor right away.

Kick the Habit with These Tips If you find yourself going to the kitchen for a snack even though you’re not hungry or eating more when you’re feeling stressed, sad or just plain bored, you might be an emotional eater. All of us eat in response to our moods sometimes, but if you find yourself consistently making poor food choices when you’re feeling stressed, depressed or anxious, it’s time to break that unhealthy habit. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Track it To identify the pattern of when, where and why you eat in response to how you feel, it’s helpful to keep a food journal for one week (use your 1199SEIU Benefit Fund Food & Fitness Journal, which you can pick up from your Outreach Coordinator or by attending one of our Wellness Department’s health fairs). Do you eat more after work when you’re tired from the stress of the day or at night when you’re bored?

Recognizing which situations may be causing you to overeat is the first step to creating strategies that can help you change the behavior. Also, ask yourself what types of foods you’re most likely to eat during these times, so you can replace high-fat, high-calorie foods with healthier choices.

2. Find low-calorie substitutes Once you’ve identified which foods you typically grab, you can start trading high-calorie, low-nutrient foods for healthy alternatives. If you typically eat fried foods or snacks like chips, try substituting other crunchy foods like air-popped popcorn and veggies with a low-calorie dip like hummus. Prefer sweet, creamy foods like ice cream and peanut butter? Pair the peanut butter with crunchy apple slices, or try fat-free yogurt with fresh fruit.

3. Nip stress in the bud The American Psychological Association reports that 38 percent of adults say they have overeaten or eaten unhealthy foods in the past month because of stress – and almost half of these adults did so weekly or more. 4. Connect with others If you’re eating because you’re bored or lonely, it may help to connect, or reconnect, with family and friends. To broaden your circle of friends, consider taking a class to develop a new hobby or joining a community volunteer group in your neighborhood. Working with others for a common cause – and getting away from food triggers around the house – can improve your mood and make it less likely that you’ll turn to food to cope with your feelings.

The Best Stress-Busters for Your Busy Schedule Everyone feels stressed sometimes, whether it’s from balancing everyday responsibilities or adjusting to changes in our lives. Whatever the source, we can all learn to manage the worry, anger or irritation we may feel in these moments. Preventing and reducing stress can help you control your weight, sleep better and even improve your relationships. It can also lower your risk for heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure and other serious health issues. So follow these tips to help you relax, recharge and protect your health!

Plan Ahead: Make a to-do list, and focus on the tasks that are most urgent.You’ll still feel a sense of accomplishment even if you don’t get to the less important tasks.

Talk to Friends and Family: If you feel that telling a loved one what’s troubling you is a “burden,” you may be surprised by how willing people are to help – and how sharing your feelings can help you feel better. Besides giving you emotional support, your friends and family can be a valuable resource in other, more practical ways, like doing errands or other tasks to lighten your load – but they can only help if they know how you’re feeling.

Get Moving: Physical activity is a natural mood lifter that can relax your muscles and make it easier for you to fall asleep at night. Though you should aim to exercise at least three times a week for 30 minutes, even a 10-minute walk during your lunch break could give you the boost you need.

How Stress Affects Kids Stress isn’t just an “adult� problem. Kids can also feel overwhelmed, depressed or tired because of stress – especially teenagers.

A recent survey by the American Psychological Association found that 13- to 17-year olds reported stress levels similar to those of adults, and nearly one-third of them said they weren’t sure they were doing enough to manage their stress.

HMS contactó a más de 77,000 miembros activos y jubilados de NBF para actualizar la información de elegibilidad que figura en los registros para sus familiares.

Healthier Eating Can Lower Your Risk for Type 2 Diabetes You can reduce your risk for Type 2 diabetes by eating a better diet, according to a recent study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. The study found that people who ate more whole grains, fruits and vegetables – and less sugar – reduced their risk for the disease. Those who ate healthier and lost weight or increased their exercise levels reduced their risk even more. Start with small changes, like drinking water instead of soda, or having fruit with plain yogurt instead of ice cream.

Sit Less and Exercise to Protect Your Heart Exercise is not enough to keep your heart in good shape if you spend most of the day sitting, a Mayo Clinic study shows. Researchers found that two hours of sitting could be just as bad for your heart as 20 minutes of exercise is good for your heart.

But the study also showed that any movement to break up long periods of sitting could improve heart health. So try walking during your lunch break, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or both!

Quitting Smoking Can Keep Your Children from Lighting Up Quitting smoking is tough, but if you do, you could help your children live longer, healthier lives, according to a Georgetown University study.

Researchers found that teen children of heavy smokers are more likely to try cigarettes and become heavy smokers themselves.They also found that the more years children are exposed to their parents smoking, the greater the chance that they will experiment with smoking or pick up the habit themselves. Losing Weight – at Any Age – Can Boost Your Heart Health A recent study in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology suggests it’s never too late to lose weight and protect your heart. Researchers studied more than 1,000 men and women who were over 60 years old, and found that those who lost weight at any age reduced their risk for developing heart problems. They also found that the longer people were overweight or obese, the greater their chances were of having heart problems. So whether you’re 25 or 55, it’s the perfect time to begin – or step up – your fall fitness routine. It can help you shed pounds and add years to your life. If you’re just starting out, be sure to check with your doctor first.

Healthier Eating Can Lower Your Risk for Type 2 Diabetes You can reduce your risk for Type 2 diabetes by eating a better diet, according to a recent study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health. The study found that people who ate more whole grains, fruits and vegetables – and less sugar – reduced their risk for the disease. Those who ate healthier and lost weight or increased their exercise levels reduced their risk even more. Start with small changes, like drinking water instead of soda, or having fruit with plain yogurt instead of ice cream.

Sit Less and Exercise to Protect Your Heart Exercise is not enough to keep your heart in good shape if you spend most of the day sitting, a Mayo Clinic study shows. Researchers found that two hours of sitting could be just as bad for your heart as 20 minutes of exercise is good for your heart.

But the study also showed that any movement to break up long periods of sitting could improve heart health. So try walking during your lunch break, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or both!

Quitting Smoking Can Keep Your Children from Lighting Up Quitting smoking is tough, but if you do, you could help your children live longer, healthier lives, according to a Georgetown University study.

Researchers found that teen children of heavy smokers are more likely to try cigarettes and become heavy smokers themselves.They also found that the more years children are exposed to their parents smoking, the greater the chance that they will experiment with smoking or pick up the habit themselves. Losing Weight – at Any Age – Can Boost Your Heart Health A recent study in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology suggests it’s never too late to lose weight and protect your heart. Researchers studied more than 1,000 men and women who were over 60 years old, and found that those who lost weight at any age reduced their risk for developing heart problems. They also found that the longer people were overweight or obese, the greater their chances were of having heart problems. So whether you’re 25 or 55, it’s the perfect time to begin – or step up – your fall fitness routine. It can help you shed pounds and add years to your life. If you’re just starting out, be sure to check with your doctor first.

A recent survey by the American Psychological Association found that 13- to 17-year olds reported stress levels similar to those of adults, and nearly one-third of them said they weren’t sure they were doing enough to manage their stress.

The Best Stress-Busters for Your Busy Schedule Everyone feels stressed sometimes, whether it’s from balancing everyday responsibilities or adjusting to changes in our lives. Whatever the source, we can all learn to manage the worry, anger or irritation we may feel in these moments. Preventing and reducing stress can help you control your weight, sleep better and even improve your relationships. It can also lower your risk for heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure and other serious health issues. So follow these tips to help you relax, recharge and protect your health!

Plan Ahead: Make a to-do list, and focus on the tasks that are most urgent.You’ll still feel a sense of accomplishment even if you don’t get to the less important tasks.

Talk to Friends and Family: If you feel that telling a loved one what’s troubling you is a “burden,” you may be surprised by how willing people are to help – and how sharing your feelings can help you feel better. Besides giving you emotional support, your friends and family can be a valuable resource in other, more practical ways, like doing errands or other tasks to lighten your load – but they can only help if they know how you’re feeling.

Get Moving: Physical activity is a natural mood lifter that can relax your muscles and make it easier for you to fall asleep at night. Though you should aim to exercise at least three times a week for 30 minutes, even a 10-minute walk during your lunch break could give you the boost you need.

Eat Healthy Foods: To feel your best, your body needs to get enough vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. So even though you may crave chips or candy when you’re stressed, you’ll feel better if you have a healthy snack like almonds or an apple. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy will keep your energy levels up and could even improve your mood.

2. Find low-calorie substitutes Once you’ve identified which foods you typically grab, you can start trading high-calorie, low-nutrient foods for healthy alternatives. If you typically eat fried foods or snacks like chips, try substituting other crunchy foods like air-popped popcorn and veggies with a low-calorie dip like hummus. Prefer sweet, creamy foods like ice cream and peanut butter? Pair the peanut butter with crunchy apple slices, or try fat-free yogurt with fresh fruit.

3. Nip stress in the bud The American Psychological Association reports that 38 percent of adults say they have overeaten or eaten unhealthy foods in the past month because of stress – and almost half of these adults did so weekly or more. Exercise is a great stress-buster, so make sure to check our (EALTHY ,IVING SECTION ON PAGE for helpful tips on how to get active and reduce your stress level.

4. Connect with others If you’re eating because you’re bored or lonely, it may help to connect, or reconnect, with family and friends. To broaden your circle of friends, consider taking a class to develop a new hobby or joining a community volunteer group in your neighborhood. Working with others for a common cause – and getting away from food triggers around the house – can improve your mood and make it less likely that you’ll turn to food to cope with your feelings.

5. Talk to a professional If you’ve tried to control your emotional eating but still struggle with it and want to talk to a professional about how to cope with your feelings, you can take advantage of the services offered by the 1199SEIU Member Assistance Program (MAP). Kick the Habit with These Tips If you find yourself going to the kitchen for a snack even though you’re not hungry or eating more when you’re feeling stressed, sad or just plain bored, you might be an emotional eater. All of us eat in response to our moods sometimes, but if you find yourself consistently making poor food choices when you’re feeling stressed, depressed or anxious, it’s time to break that unhealthy habit. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Track it To identify the pattern of when, where and why you eat in response to how you feel, it’s helpful to keep a food journal for one week (use your 1199SEIU Benefit Fund Food & Fitness Journal, which you can pick up from your Outreach Coordinator or by attending one of our Wellness Department’s health fairs). Do you eat more after work when you’re tired from the stress of the day or at night when you’re bored?

Recognizing which situations may be causing you to overeat is the first step to creating strategies that can help you change the behavior. Also, ask yourself what types of foods you’re most likely to eat during these times, so you can replace high-fat, high-calorie foods with healthier choices.

A veces todos comemos como respuesta a nuestros estados de ánimo, pero si usted se encuentra eligiendo constantemente malas opciones de alimentos cuando se siente estresado, deprimido o ansioso, llegó el momento de romper ese hábito poco saludable. A continuación le presentamos algunos consejos para empezar.

1. Merle Warren

Changing her diet and exercising regularly has helped Merle Warren lose 40 pounds, get her blood pressure under control and feel great about life.

What a difference a year can make. When Registered Nurse Merle Warren visited her doctor in September 2013, her knees ached, she weighed 213 pounds and she learned that her blood pressure was high.These days, she walks and jogs four times a week on knees that feel great, her blood pressure is back to normal, her clothes fit better and her energy level is the best it’s ever been. She is also 40 pounds lighter. “I’ve gone from a size 14 to a size 8, which makes me feel good every day when I look in the mirror,” she said. “But it’s about even more than that – being healthy is helping me enjoy life.”

on fried foods, which she admits was a struggle early on. She began making a chicken or a fish recipe for dinner nearly every night, along with fresh vegetables, and replaced unhealthy snacks like chips or candy with nuts, yogurt and fruit. What’s more, she stopped drinking sugary drinks of any kind (she used to love “juice” drinks, which often contain as much sugar as a slice of chocolate cake) and switched to water. “It was very challenging at first, even more than sticking with the exercise,” Merle said, “but it has become easier over time.”

Her former weight meant she had to watch her grandchildren play, rather than play with them; yet today, it’s more often the young ones who have to keep up with her. “Like most kids, they love to run around,” Merle said. “We run, jog, walk together, you name it. And we always do jumping jacks” – something she said she wouldn’t have dreamed of even trying a few years ago.

Not only have the changes that were hard at the beginning turned into healthy habits, but the payoff has been even better than she had hoped. Whether she’s caring for patients at work or playing with her grandchildren at home, she now has a more positive outlook – and more energy. “Everyone in my life, my family, friends, co-workers, have been so supportive, even when I was struggling,” Merle said. “Sharing my success with them and being an example for others is probably the best reward of all.”

But last September, when her doctor told her she needed to lose weight and get her blood pressure down, Merle started doing a lot of things she never thought she’d do, like walking three or four times a week. She began slowly, walking for 15 minutes at a moderate pace, then added more time to build stamina; before long, the workouts got easier and she felt better. As she started losing weight and getting more fit, Merle began skipping the crosstown bus after work at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan and walking from Second Avenue to Eighth Avenue before taking the subway home to Queens. Now her regular workout includes three miles of cardio activity – half walking and half jogging – four times a week.

As much as she has come to love exercising, Merle stressed that she’d never have lost the weight – and kept it off – without also changing her diet. First, she said, she stopped eating fast food and cut way back

Thanks to the cooperation of all our members with covered dependents, the National Benefit Fund (NBF) completed its Dependent Eligibility Verification Program in March 2014. Working with HMS Employer Solutions (HMS), a firm that specializes in healthcare eligibility verification, we updated our eligibility records so that we can continue to provide you and your eligible spouses and children with quality healthcare coverage while protecting benefit dollars. HMS contacted more than 77,000 NBF active members and retirees to update the eligibility information on record for their family members. The program allowed us to determine which dependents (children, spouses and young adults) were currently eligible for benefits and to dis-enroll those who were no longer eligible.

If you notice anything unusual on your EOB statements or when you access “My Account,” such as charges for services you did not receive, or if you believe a provider is using the Fund’s benefits fraudulently for any reason, please email our tipline at BenefitFraud@1199Funds.org or call our Fraud and Abuse Hotline at (646) 473-6148. However, we extended the deadline for the program so that members who had not responded or who had not submitted sufficient documentation would have extra time to verify or update the status of their dependents; as a result, some of those dependents were re-enrolled.

Protects Benefits for Four More Years This summer, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes of New York reached a tentative four-year collective bargaining agreement – which takes effect October 1, 2014 – that preserves comprehensive health coverage and defined pension benefits for members who work at League institutions. As many of you know, this new agreement serves as a model for other contracts still to be negotiated that cover members who participate in the National Benefit Fund. For members at League institutions, the contract continues to protect against out-of-pocket costs – meaning no premiums or co-

payments for covered services. The agreement also maintains retirement security in pension benefits and even provides for two future retiree bonuses.

As always, you and your fellow members have played an important part in preserving your benefits by following the rules of your Benefit Fund’s prescription programs and prior authorization process, and by using our participating provider network. Going forward, we will continue to explore cost containment programs like these to help ensure that all 1199SEIU members can access the care they need when they need it.

While providing access to quality healthcare is our top priority, we recognize that getting and staying healthy means taking care of ourselves – exercising, eating well and paying attention to our emotional well-being.

All across the country, more and more workers have been forced to pay for a larger share of their coverage as healthcare costs continue to increase. Not so with 1199SEIU members who enjoy comprehensive health coverage through the National Benefit Fund (NBF). In this issue of For Your Benefit, you will read about the new collective bargaining agreement reached between the Union and the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes of New York, which serves as a model for most contracts covering the NBF. The new agreement fully funds benefits at the current level while, as in the past, requiring the NBF to find more savings opportunities. Along with the agreement, you will also read about some of the programs that we have created – and that you make work – which will help continue to preserve your benefits with no out-of-pocket costs.

The National Benefit Fund believes it is a “grandfathered health plan� under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the Affordable Care Act). As permitted by the Affordable Care Act, a grandfathered health plan can preserve certain basic health coverage that was already in effect when that law was enacted. Being a grandfathered health plan means that this plan may not include certain consumer protections of the Affordable Care Act that apply to other plans, for example, the requirement for an external review process for claims appeals. However, grandfathered health plans must comply with certain other consumer protections in the Affordable Care Act, for example, the elimination of lifetime limits on benefits. Questions regarding which protections apply and which protections do not apply to a grandfathered health plan and what might cause a plan to change from grandfathered health plan status can be directed to the plan administrator at (646) 473-9200.
