1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds’
Tuition Assistance Programs As part of the 1199SEIU/League Training and Employment Funds, the Training and Upgrading Fund offers 1199SEIU members a variety of education, training and counseling support services, providing the opportunity to pursue college degrees, vocational training and continuing education enhancements. You are eligible to receive these benefits after one year of service with a contributing employer.
Tuition Assistance Degree Programs Tuition Assistance Degree Programs allow you to earn college credits at the undergraduate or graduate level in programs approved by the Fund. Tuition assistance is provided in the form of a voucher or reimbursement of tuition cost, depending on the school you attend. Separate rules and procedures apply to the voucher and reimbursement programs. Tuition Voucher Program The Tuition Voucher Program provides an opportunity for you to take courses at colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY), select colleges of the State University of New York (SUNY) and Touro College without paying upfront tuition costs. A voucher covers a maximum of six credits per semester for required courses leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree. Tuition Reimbursement This program is similar to the Tuition Voucher Program but instead of paying the college, the program reimburses you for the preapproved tuition costs you incurred for a maximum of six credits per term, after you have successfully completed the accredited course. The courses reimbursed must be required for the major and degree, and they must be related to current employment or enable your career advancement in a healthcare-related field. You must obtain pre-approval from a Fund counselor before you begin degree programs, as some restrictions may apply.
Vocational Certification Programs Reimbursement is available to assist you with tuition costs for vocational certification programs in such fields as Licensed Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology, Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC), EMTs and Paramedics (Emergency Medical Services), Heating,Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Medical Coding. The benefit amounts vary based upon the program.
You must obtain pre-approval from a Fund counselor before you begin any of these certification programs.
Continuing Education Enhancements You can access up to $750 per calendar year, based on eligibility, for registration costs for conferences, workshops, seminars and other continuing education activities. These activities must be specifically related to continuing education in technical, professional and other healthcare- or job-related skills required for employment. Reimbursement applications must be submitted within 90 days of continuing education activity completion. You can participate in continuing education symposiums and seminars through the Training Fund’s Institute for Continuing Education at no out-of-pocket cost (www.1199SEIUBenefits. org/Institute), and/or take eligible continuing education activities externally and apply for reimbursement.
Getting Started You are required to speak with a counselor prior to starting any college program or vocational certification program. The counselor will help you explore options, offer valuable guidance based on your academic history and career goals, and let you know whether your program is approved for Tuition Assistance, as some restrictions may apply. Generally, the Fund will approve programs leading to a degree or vocational certification that is directly related to your current employment or that enables your career advancement in a healthcare-related field. Our counselors are available to help serve your training and education needs, whether you are eligible for Training and Upgrading Fund benefits or other programs offered by the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds (TEF).
