Take the Time to Self-care

Too many of us think practicing “self-care” is being selfish or self-indulgent. It’s actually the opposite. Practicing self-care – doing things to safeguard your physical and mental health – allows you to be at your best for others as well as yourself. Here are a few simple ways to get started.

Exercise:

Ride a bike, take a walk around your neighborhood, log on to the Benefits Channel (www.1199SEIUBenefits.org/videos) for a rejuvenating yoga workout.

Eat healthy meals:

Replace canned ingredients in recipes with fresh, practice “Meatless Mondays,” swap out sweetened drinks for seltzer with a splash of lemon or lime juice.

Schedule “me” time:

Set aside time to get lost in a magazine or book, soak in a hot bath, plug in your headphones and listen to your favorite music.

Connect with others:

Schedule lunch with a friend, Zoom with a distant relative, actually play in the playground with your kids.

Do at least one thing you love every day:

Work the daily crossword, light a scented candle, watch your favorite show. This is not one-size-fits-all, so find what makes you smile – and just do it!
