Pan Am Brand Description

History

Pan American World Airways, or Pan Am, was principal international air carrier of the United States for most of its lifetime—first flying mail between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba, in 1927. By the 1950s, Pan Am offered "around the world" service and its brand was as familiar abroad as Coca-Cola.

In the Jet Age, Pan Am faced growing challenges as international travel grew and U.S. airlines deregulated in the late 1970s. Pan Am increasingly competed with airlines expanding into foreign markets from extensive domestic routes. Attempting to quickly create a domestic system, Pan Am acquired Miami-based National Airlines in 1980. After selling most of its international routes to raise operating funds, Pan Am ended in bankruptcy in December 1991.

Throughout the 1950s, Pan Am became experts in setting up aviation infrastructure in other countries, both for the airline itself and by providing technical expertise to local airlines.

To reduce costs after September 11, 2001 Guilford transferred the fleet of 727s to subsidiary "Clipper Connection" and added "Clipper Connection".

The airline ceased operations at the end of February 2008.

Pan Am

The Original Logo

The redesign of 1957 moved the lettering to the center of the circle. The typeface remained untouched, but the color was changed from black to white, and the size of the letters got a bit smaller. As for the globe itself, it got its colors elevated too, with the new shade of blue replacing the bright sky shade. The white meridians became thinner and cleaner, and that gave a more elegant mood to the badge, adding professionalism and confidence.

The concept was changed in 1971, but it didn’t last long. The new badge was composed of the same elements, the globe, and the logotype, but placed and executed in different ways than the previous ones. The light blue contoured globe was now set on the left from the enlarged wordmark, written in the same shade of blue, using a very simple sansserif typeface for its title case letters. It was simple, it was solid, and it did evoke a sense of reliability and trustworthiness.
