THE AQUA TOWER

The Development Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, principal and founder of Studio Gang, is a practitioner and thinker at the forefront of her field. Gang uses words such as rhythm and flow in the fullness of their meanings to suggest a number of careful inflections linked to the concepts of repetition and movement, espacially the towers.

The Aqua Tower’s floor plates were shaped to give residents sight lines to specific Chicago landmarks as well as to provide solar shading and help break up the wind. The cantilevered, curvilinear slabs produce an elevation with variegated light and shadow as well as the appearance of undulating movement when seen from below.

Gang describes how the rhythm of the facade and its balconies enables visual and social interactions between the occupants of the building, somewhat like the interior of a theatre where the balconies allow the audience the pleasures of watching each other as much as the action on the stage.

MIRASTUDIO

The Development MIRA is an urban residential development in the heart of San Francisco. Just blocks from the Bay Bridge, Embarcadero, and Rincon Park, the 400-foot-tall tower creates a welcoming new community in the evolving Transbay district and accommodates a wide range of units, with 40 percent designated below market rate.

Twisting incrementally over the height of the tower, the bays offer ample views, natural light throughout the day, and fresh air, and also inform the building’s distinctive form and texture—the result of special attention to the building’s energy performance and how it is experienced.

Extending the habitable spaces within and offering platforms from which to view the city at all angles, the bays make every residence a corner unit.

CITY HYDE PARK

The Development City Hyde Park reimagines the urban apartment building, bringing new options for living, recreation, and leisure to its full-block site—formerly a strip mall and underused parking lot. At street level, wider, improved sidewalks complement the building’s retail arcade and lobbies, contributing to a dynamic, walkable community scene.

The building’s balcony “stems” act as columns that take gravity loads to the ground. Platforms extend from the stems in phyllotactic patterns that allow oblique sight lines between neighbors, encouraging social connectivity through architecture.

Featuring indoor and outdoor amenities, the residential tower rises from the plinth, which supports an expansive green roof and is anchored by a grocery store.

The tower’s facade emphasizes its structure with a playful array of stacked concrete panels forming columns, bays, sunshades, and balconies, offering multiple opportunities for residents to socialize, enjoy the outdoors, and connect to the surrounding neighborhood and city.
