I LOVE WEDDING INVITATIONS. Arriving often in daisy pink envelopes in China, wedding invitations conjure up a modern ritual of ever-lasting love. Wedding banquets are a kaleidoscope of all aspects of Chinese society—a complex web of family, relatives, social hierarchy and human interactions. Ang Lee’s movie Wedding Banquet amply illustrated that. As much as we would like to think of marriage as between two people, wedding remains a business of two families and, in some parts of China, of two villages. Long before actress Yao Chen and supermodel Shu Pei ordered and tried on their wedding gowns in New York, the City held the promise of the most stylish outfits in which to walk down the aisle. I don’t want you to think of a New York Wedding as only a destination wedding. 2013年2月8日,一场暴风雪 NEMO奏响了纽约市农历蛇年的新春序 章。当夜,许多宴会纷纷取消,银妆素裹的曼哈顿城人烟稀少, 但42街的 Cipriani 宴会厅内却是一片喜庆,350 多位纽约名流 镶金缀红出席参加华美协进社第九届中国新年庆祝晚宴。 冒着暴风雪的来宾们应是受到了“瑞雪兆丰年”这句中国 古语的启发。晚宴筹办委员徐芝韵、盛华苏蕙,华美协进社主席 甘维珍,副主席贝建中,社长江芷若,董事郑安澜,陈国庆, James Chin, Nellie Chi, Ted Wang, 薛华成,长期支持者曹其峰,田浩 江,Francine LeFrak,副总领事董晓军和《约》出版人刘裘蒂博 士均出席晚宴并支持晚会的慈善主题——通过红包和无声拍卖 等形式为华美协进社的教育项目募款。

ON FEB 8TH 2013, snowstorm Nemo heralded the arrival of the Year of the Snake in New York City. While the blanketed streets of Manhattan saw many a canceled f ê te , over 350 guests livened the halls of Cipriani’s 42nd Street in a sea of red and gold, the dress code du jour for China Institute’s 9th annual Chinese New Year Celebration. Attendees who braved the blizzard were likely inspired by a Chinese proverb “plentiful year of winter snow trillion” (ruixue zhao fengnian), which holds an early snowfall as the auspicious omen for a year of harvest. Gala co-chairs Carolyn Hsu-Balcer, Sophia Sheng, Chair Virginia A. Kamsky, Vice-chair Chien Chung Pei, President Sara Judge McCalpin, Trustees Anla Cheng, Chen Guoqing, James Chin, Nellie Chi, Ted Wang, Washington SyCip, and long-time supporters Silas Chou, Hao Jiang Tian, Francine LeFrak, , Deputy Consul General Xiaojun Dong and YUE publisher Chiu-Ti Jansen all turned out in support of the gala. A red envelope collection and silent auction raised funds for China Institute’s education programs.

“Try the dumplings!” Trustee Chen Guoqing whispered to YUE, pointing at an elaborate spread offered in bamboo baskets, “Sophia [Sheng] spent hours teaching the chefs how to make these.” Indeed guests all across the hall were delighting in the Cipriani kitchen’s ability to churn out more than 30 tables worth of authentic Chinese food, including the crucial New Year’s staple, Longevity Noodles. At the next table over, Silas Chou became distracted from his Buddha’s Delight as a gaggle of children decked out in their Lunar New Year finest marched on stage to perform Chinese folk song Finding Flowers In The Snow (Ta Xue Xun Mei), led by choir master Albert Lei and the authoritative 7-year-old soloist Melanie Chou. Camera flashes went off as parents and grandparents clapped in adoration for the young performers singing in crisp Mandarin diction , an admirable feat for children who do not count Chinese as a mother tongue. The evening at Avery Fisher Hall raised nearly $850,000 for the orchestra’s programming. “I think what’s very significant is that this is the second year we had a chance to be able to share Chinese culture Uptown, up here with all the people who love culture and our wonderful culture in America and for them to see the best of Chinese culture and not have it just be in the local community like in Chinatown,” Gala co-chair Shirley Young told YUE. “It’s wonderful to have a statement that we’re all a part of the same world now.” Attendees at the elegan fête ranged from board member and special events committee chairman for the Philharmonic Karen LeFrak, chairman and gala co-chair Gary Parr, H.E. Ambassador Sun Guoxiang and Madame Wang Min, to YUE’s Chiu-Ti Jansen, Ghislaine Maxwell, Angela Chen, and billionaire Wilbur Ross. During the cocktail, as some 300 guests enjoyed hors d’œuvre, there was a marvelous enactment of “The Legend of Madame White Snake” by The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company. Then guests moved into the concert hall where conductor Long Yu, led stupendous performances by jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, Sopiano Ying Wang, and Tibetan folk ensemble Snow Lotus Trio. “Chinese people have started getting more involved with the world,” said gala cochair Angela Chen before the gala dinner. “The New York Philharmonic is the best place to be!” And, indeed, she was quite right.

Huge Success: “I SING BEIJING” American Debut 歌剧歌手们,不论国籍或母语,都已习惯用不同语言演唱:意大利语、德语、法语、及英文。若 是如此,那为何不能用中文演唱呢?2月16日,《我唱北京》音乐会的美国首演在林肯中心满座 的 Alice Tully Hall 举行,当晚20多位来自超过7个国家(包括美国,意大利,加拿大等)的歌 剧歌手们以标准的汉语发音演唱了多首著名中西歌剧片段。 著名艺术大师保罗·纳德勒率领的纽约城市歌剧院管弦乐团,著名歌剧男低音演唱家田 浩江担任艺术指导,歌唱者们生动地演绎了许多中国现代歌剧选段和中国艺术歌曲。其中包括 《白毛女》、 《黄河大合唱》、 《我爱你,中国》和一些西方古典曲目如《蝴蝶夫人》、 《寒冷的 旅程》和《浮士德》。 “这是一个属于未来歌剧的夜晚,我想把这个舞台留给这些年轻人们,”田浩江对《约》 解释他不选择在首演登台时说道, “在10或20年后他们将改变世界”——这个将会用普通话 来演绎有难度的艺术歌曲的世界。和许多项目参与者一样,田十分肯定地认为,未来中国将会 是西方歌剧的重要市场。 Opera singers, regardless of their nationalities and language proficiency, are accustomed to singing in languages other than their mother tongue: Italian, German, French and English. So why can’t they sing in Mandarin? On 16 February, I SING BEIJING, a groundbreaking initiative that brought more than twenty opera singers from seven countries, including the United States, Italy and Canada, to sing in Mandarin, held its American debut to a full house at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.. Renowned maestro Paul Nadler led the New York City Opera Orchestra with art direction by acclaimed Met Opera bass Hao Jiang Tian. Singers vividly interpreted many Chinese modern opera excerpts and China’s art songs. These included “ White-Haired Girl”, “Yellow River Cantata”, “I Love You, China”, and some western classical repertoire such as “Madame Butterfly”, “the Cold Journey”, and “Faust”. “It’s a night belonging to the future of opera and I wanted to give the stage to these young fellows,” Tian explained to YUE regarding his choice to not take the stage during the premiere. “In 10 or 20 years they will change the world”—a world that is ready for singing difficult artistic songs in Mandarin. Tian definitely felt, as many of the program participants have articulated, China would be a great future market for Western opera.

IT IS ELEVEN ON THE MORNING of Good Friday. The YUE team is sitting in a glass-walled conference room, the transparency only slightly obscured by piles of fashion magazines. On a day that most modeling agencies might be closed, the agents at Mix Model Management are buzzing in anticipation of the arrival of the new girl from China. “She always arrives promptly on time,” they assure us. We were skeptical, but Zilin—all 1.82 meters of her—swooped in at the appointed time and proved all our tardy model stereotypes wrong. Everyone wants a piece of Zilin these days. On the first episode of The Face, supermodel Naomi Campbell practically squealed, “I’ve got to have her.” Coco Rocha, mesmerized, said, “She walks like a gazelle.” For all those not savvy about the modeling industry, or with obscure animal references, those comments carry a lot of weight. Out of a billion people came Zilin. Zilin was crowned Miss Universe China 2011. She went on to Brazil to compete in the Miss Universe pageant there and was fourth runner up. She is still only twenty-five, but she has already worked for Gucci and Chanel, mingled with the Prince of Monaco and Rupert Murdoch, and nearly won the first season of the new, star-studded modeling competition reality show The Face (Oxygen). “I want to be the Chinese Naomi Campbell,” she giggles. As the one of the few Asian models who have been able to break through to the American markets, she brings a lot to the table for high end fashion labels. With a billion adoring eyes in China, she might even surpass her supermodel mentor Naomi Campbell. SPRING 2013 | 33

It all began one afternoon when she received an unexpected call from Yue-Sai Kan, arguably the most famous television host in China, that nation’s equivalent of Oprah. Yue-Sai requested Zilin’s presence in Beijing to be a contestant on the Miss China Universe pageant. “I was so nervous,” she admitted; she was unsure if she would even go. “The fl ight was at 7:00 am to Beijing. I decided to go at 1:00 am, six hours before my plane took off.” That turned out to be a fortuitous decision. When Zilin won the competition, she became in that instant the face of China and a sort of scion to Yue-Sai Kan. Her transition from part time modeling to Miss Universe China was not easy. We spoke with Yue Sai Kan about Zilin’s transformation. “When we started training she was unable to express her opinion and could not smile because as a model she was told not to. We had to train her hard to smile, it was tough.” Speaking with Zilin is easy now. She is extremely humble about her striking beauty. What explains Zilin’s modest nature may be the discrimination that Zilin faced growing up. People in China thought she was strange because of her height. “My childhood was a nightmare, friends teased me and told me to stop growing,” she admits. Her dark skin and large lips did not help either. Billboards and advertisements promoted milky skin and delicate features. Zilin cried to her mom for cursing her with “sausage lips.” (“Well, stay in America! Those features are jackpot here!” Our editors yell over.) As China has grown increasingly Westernized, Zilin’s features, once a hindrance, now give her a cross-over appeal. Her dark skin and full lips fit nicely into the American conception of sex appeal, in the vein of someone like Angelina Jolie or Naomi Campbell. To date, Zilin has done work for Bvlgari, Armani, Cartier, and Chanel. She is one of the spokespersons for the Brazil World Cup in 2014.

In addition to her work, Zilin supports various charities. During the filming of Miss Universe in Brazil, she partnered with Operation Smile to publicize the problem of cleft palates and other facial deformities. “A forty five minute surgery can totally change a child’s life,” Zilin explains. She recalls the way children who formerly bowed their heads in shame suddenly had the confidence to look people in the eye after their surgeries. The contestants were given the option of watching the operations, but it was not for the faint of heart. “Not many girls did it, but I wanted to be there for the child,” Zilin divulges. “Afterwards, I got to hold her in my arms, she was only 6 months old! Can you imagine? It was so special for me” In China, she has helped raise money for the Soong Ching Ling Foundation, an organization that builds maternal and infant health clinics in poor areas in Western China. spring 2013  |  35

Zilin’s latest project proved to be her most challenging. With the help of Yue-Sai Kan, Zilin secured a spot on the fi rst season of the Oxygen reality show The Face, a modeling competition hosted by supermodels Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova, and Coco Rocha. In one of the season’s most dramatic moments, Coco accused Zilin of lying about her name’s meaning in Chinese. Naomi fiercely defended Zilin, as did an army of commenters who took up Zilin’s cause through social media, garnering her new fans on weibo annd twitter (@zilin_luo). On the incident, Zilin stated, “You can laugh at anything about me, but not my name and not my country.” Never sounding more like Miss China, “I am so thankful for Naomi, who was on the phone throughout the night with China to confi rm that my name really does mean ‘purple jade’.” New Yorkers now recognize her; fans approach her on the subway and on the streets of SoHo. It is not uncommon to see Zilin on the arm of Wendi Murdoch, another one of her mentors. She moves with ease through a crowd. “No longer a little girl in Shanghai,” Yue Sai Kan perhaps understated. “She attended London Olympics as a VIP, attended the Rose Ball with Prince Albert of Monaco and gave an award to President Clinton.” “I think it was the people here!” Zilin says when asked for what she missed most from New York City in her travels for work. We fished for details about a potential American boyfriend, but she laughed it off, admitting that the best thing about being in New York is that she doesn’t feel any pressure to get married. “No one talks about getting married here,” she says. In her native Shanghai, professional women over 27 are christened “leftover girl” (sheng nu). “My grandparents and even friends would always be nagging me about marriage plans,” she says.

Only after getting her in an actual wedding dress for our cover shoots did she let slip a few details about her future plans for marriage. “I would love to get my gown and looks done in New York City, and the ceremony… on a beach? One of my ceremonies would have to be in Shanghai, where my family are,” she told us. At the moment, Zilin is focused on her career. She studies acting for approximately eight hours a day at New York Film Academy. When she is not gliding through NYC soirees, Zilin finds time to trek to Chinatown for ingredients to make chicken stew like she used to have at home in Shanghai. “It makes me homesick. It’s my mom’s smell,” she smiles. “This girl has got great potential and could go all the way,” Naomi Campbell said of Zilin. Trust us, she is not exaggerating. spring 2013  |  37

SOME MAY SAY MEN HAVE IT EASY when it comes to weddings. That may be, but keeping things interesting and engaging while respecting traditional etiquette can be difficult. For bridegrooms looking to make a splash on their special day, nothing evokes more dashing glamour than a smoking jacket or tuxedo. The most impressive ones on the luxury market for spring 2013 are the madeto-measure options in silk or brocade detailing like the ones Canali showed at the end of its show. A more traditional black-tie ensemble can be found at Ermenegildo Zegna, Giorgio Armani or Calvin Klein Collection. These looks boasted great, contemporary finishes. And a wide lapel still seems to be the most onpoint choice today. Another smart option is the double-breasted suit, which continued to be featured on the runways in Milan. For dapper men in attendance at their friends’ and families’ celebration, this season is all about a youthful fit and color. This was most memorably achieved at Gucci, where Frida Giannini’s slender tailoring and saturated tones shined strong. Same for Jason Basmajian’s collection at Brioni, shown at Milan’s La Triennale. Salvatore Ferragamo’s Massimiliano Giornetti went daringly bright in his spring 2013 efforts, but the effect was electric and debonair—ideal for a warm-weather fiesta. No matter if you’re going to a formal wedding in Shanghai or a beachy occasion on Nantucket, there are chic ways to channel your fashion creativity in a manner that communicates sophistication, elan, and allure.

More intrepid dressers can let it all go and rock as many colorful patterns as can muster. Those gents should check out Dries van Noten’s audacious camo suiting. menswear can be a bit warm in the summer; Emporio Armani did a fantastic short-suit in black-tie that was stylish and cosmopolitan. WEDDINGS AND CELEBRATIONS OF CIVIL UNIONS are not too dissimilar from brilliant fashion: both rejoice in creativity, beauty, romance and artifice. In many parts of the world, spring is the beginning of a gruelling wedding calendar that, for most, continues into late October. Recently in Boston, while I was assisting a dear friend and bride-to-be rummage through boxes of Dior, Prada, Jimmy Choo, and Saint Laurent nude pumps, it struck me that both weddings and fashion require attention to the details and collaboration. But don’t fret! Planning what to wear at even the most magnificent wedding should foremost be rewarding and fun. Naturally, today, designers and luxury fashion brands continue to produce smart and sophisticated bridal gowns, dresses, and suits for such special occasions. The possibilities are excitingly endless and increasingly progressive. Shopping for the right outfit for your wedding should be an indulgent pleasure—one that is unhurried. I recall helping a bride discover her dream J.Crew bridal gown at their Madison Avenue outpost for her Coastal New England wedding. Much Champagne was consumed as she perused her options. Another friend, who got married in a lavish Montecito, California affair, had her gown custom designed—a painstaking œuvre that was simply stunning. At her rehearsal dinner, she went less fussy in a dazzling Lela Rose frock. Weddings are about bliss and in this issue we investigate some of this season’s most wondrous spring and summer couture ideal for unions of love. ROYAL BRIDAL The world’s most opulent and affluent brides know that the only choice for their wedding day is a haute couture gown. Pricing out usually around $100,000, each haute couture ensemble made in Paris incorporates the designer’s vision for a dream. These often ornate gowns reflect not only sophistication, but excess—with flowing, costly fabrics and hand-sewn detailing that blossoms from the waist. They are fairytale dresses come to life and require confidence to wear. Elie Saab seems to be a wise choice these days for celebrities and the exceedingly wealthy. For spring 2013, he presented a series of elegant dresses with intricate beadwork and lace appliqué. A red gown might just be a perfect harmony between Chinese tradition and modern Parisian glamour. Christian Dior’s Raf Simons also embellished with crystal beadwork. Karl Lagerfeld concluded his Mediterranean garden-themed haute couture show with a progressive two-bride finale that boasted marvelous snowy plumage on slender silhouettes. Valentino’s head designers, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, served up dollops of decadence in lace and gilded silk hems with a fitted bodice that blossomed into layered skirting. When I took in Zuhair Murad’s show at Hôtel Westin, her bridal options were equally dreamy and had an abundance of rich fabrics that evoked 1940s Hollywood. Famed bridal designer du jour, Monique L’huillier, offers her élite clients customfinished dresses through her Collection label. Reem Acra’s spring Royal Collection features exactly the craftsmanship and refinement that any bride looking to make a grand entrance should investigate. VALENTINO HAUTE COUTURE

BLOSSOMING EMBELLISHMENTS Floral detailing is a fantastic way to work your bridal magic, with just as much romance, but perhaps less dramatically than an overthe-top, royal aesthetic. Look resplendent in a body-hugging sheath gown with shimmering detailing or let things flow a bit more with subtle layers of tulle and lace. Giambattista Valli’s spring haute couture collection suggested a more contemporary shape and length, but added delicate, hand-crafted floral appliqué. A structured, dusty rose gown by Oscar de la Renta that flared into a bell-shaped skirt with flowery appliqué, would be a suitable choice for a bride craving something more classic. A frothy piece from Son Jung Wan’s spring offerings is decidedly more bohemian and playful. SPRING 2013 | 63

A FEW YEARS AGO, it was fashionable for Chinese executives to do their MBA studies abroad in the US. Recently, having an EMBA degree has overtaken the trend. According to The Chinese Luxury Consumer White Paper 2012 issued by Hurun Report Research Institute, almost 30% of China's high net worth individuals have taken part in EMBA programs or further education classes for CEOs. Jorge Choy, Director of Business Development, Americas from Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business told YUE Magazine that the enrollment at China’s top EMBA programs in 2012 has reached 600 in average. At the same time, many US EMBA programs have loosened the quotas for international students. As a result, more Chinese executives choose to study their EMBA in the US. This article discusses the trend of studying for an EMBA in the US.

What is EMBA?

EMBA直译为高级管理人员工商管理硕士,它由芝加哥大学管 理学院于1943年首创。据 Jorge Choy 介绍,EMBA 主要学员为企 业高管,至少有5年以上的管理经验。在美国,学员的平均入学年 龄为38岁,年收入为 78000 美元。它主要为企业高管提供互相交 流学习的机会,通过在不同国家文化学习优秀的管理模式,增加 学员的全球化视野。

EMBA (Executive Masters of Business Administration) was first developed by Chicago University Kellogg School of Management in 1943. According to Jorge Choy, most EMBA students are company executives who have more than five years of management experience. In the US, EMBA students have an average age of 38 and an average annual salary of $78,000. The aim of the program is to provide advanced management methods, global vision, and learning through studying in different countries and cultures.

Soft power is the key in application Most EMBA program admissions do not emphasize the applicants’ GPA or GMAT. Some top programs such as those at Cornell, Duke and UCLA don’t even require GMAT scores to be included in the application process. Compared to test scores, soft power is the key determinant to be considered. This includes work experience, track record, and recommendation letters. For example, The Duke Fuqua Executive MBA students generally have 15 years of experience. Apart from the difference in application, the US EMBA program tuition fee is much higher than that in China. The top ten EMBA programs have an average tuition fee of $160,000 or so. For example, the Wharton Business School has a tuition fee of $17,500 USD (¥1,100,000 RMB), while the most expensive EMBA program in China has only ¥700,000 RMB.

High ROI Regarding the EMBA as an investment however, the investors should focus on the return on investment (ROI) in terms of the amounts invested. Take the Kellogg–HKUST EMBA program for instance; it ranked NO.1 in Financial Times 2012 EMBA ranking for the alumni’s average annual salary of $465,774 with 42% growth rate three years after graduation. This has truly become one of the key reasons for executives to study in US schools. According to The Chinese Luxury Consumer White Paper 2012 issued by Hurun Report Research Institute, among those who take part in EMBAs and CEO further education classes, more than 75% feel that the biggest benefit they get from this is in helping to expand their social networks. US EMBA programs have long histories, with many of their alumni going on to take top government posts and manage Fortune 500 companies. The huge high-end alumni community is definitely a fringe-benefit. For example, The Booth School has 47,000 alumni in 116 countries. Many schools will invite their famous alumni back to school to share their experiences. Luis Vega from Duke EMBA class of 2011 said he had an SPRING 2013 | 73

At the same time, many students within the US desire having classmates with international experience “because China has captured the world’s attention with its strong economy and its rapidly changing business environment, having Chinese students in the classroom greatly enhances the non-Chinese students’ knowledge of China, gives them the opportunity to learn the Chinese way of doing business and how the East and West differ in their approach to opportunities and challenges” said Carla Hayn.

More students paying for their tuitions John Gallagher, the Associate Dean for Fuqua’s Executive MBA Programs said: “most EMBA students were fully sponsored by their companies in the past and given the time from work to attend classes. These days, the majority of Executive MBA students are paying their full tuition. Many are seeking new positions in their industries, and even seeking to change industries.” The data from University of California - Berkeley Haas School of Business shows that only 10% of the students in their EMBA program were fully sponsored by their companies with the majority being self-sponsored. In China, the EMBA students are also paying their own tuition fees in recent years. Jorge Choy said that the CKGSB students are mostly business owners themselves and CEOs. “HAIPAI IS LIKE A MODERN WOMAN,” journalist and writer Cao Juren famously declared in 1934. As Juren’s remark indicates, haipai, or the particular brand of art, literature, and culture that swept through Shanghai in the first half of the 20th century, had a distinctly feminine flair. Shanghai Glamour: New Women, 1910s to 1940s, an exhibition guest-curated by scholar Mei Mei Rado at the Museum of Chinese in America, explores how Shanghai women and their glamorous dress in many ways embodied the modernization of this Far Eastern metropolis. Along with the display of 15 outfits from the 1910s to the 1940s—12 of which are on loan from the China National Silk Museum in Hangzhou and on view in America for the first time—Shanghai Glamour tells a rich and refreshing history of this time period through an exquisite collection of over 50 accessories, posters, lifestyle magazines, and other material culture. Established as a treaty port in 1843, Shanghai (which literally translates as “on the sea”) rapidly adopted the title “Paris of the East” in the ensuing decades. In addition to the import of goods, Shanghai embraced Western ideas and influences, still visible today in the modern architecture and design that characterizes the city. Large boulevards and public spaces such as movie theaters and department stores offered new arenas for people to see and be seen. In the midst of this wave

of cultural experimentation, women found a new foothold for themselves. These ‘new women’ of the exhibition’s title were “females with new education, new social roles, new outlooks, and above all, new cosmopolitan appearance,” curator Rado remarks. “As demi-mondaines, intellectual women, or society ladies, new women embraced modern material culture, mastered urban lifestyle, explored female subjectivity, and enjoyed their independence and public visibility.” Shanghai Glamour presents the many faces of the new Shanghai woman—from student to socialite, courtesan to housewife, dancer to movie star—and explores how different women constructed their identities in relation to the rapidly changing urban landscape. In addition to the evocative visual displays (from an intricately embroidered ink black qipao to a mesh purse from the 1920s, the objects readily impart the energy and spirit of the streets of historic Shanghai), what is particularly intriguing about MOCA’s exhibition is the exploration of a not-always-glamorous history through the medium of fashion. In fact, as one can surmise, not far behind the glamour lay themes of social anxiety and unrest that accompany the phenomenon of shifting gender roles. Though Shanghai Glamour celebrates a liberated spirit articulated through bold fashions that overturned traditional notions of behavior and dress, it is also noteworthy to point out the reliance on tradition that characterized the organization of such an exhibition. Helen Koh, MOCA’s Executive Director, details the search for accessories and other objects that led Rado to private collections throughout New York, where she “found exceptional qipao, handbags, and photographs passed down from a Shanghai-born grandmother, mother, mother-in-law, or aunt to their descendents in the United States.” Without the careful preservation of what was perhaps once considered provocative ephemera, today’s viewers would be hard-pressed to fully appreciate and understand the unique role women played in the dynamic culture and modernity of 20th-century Shanghai. Asian American designers in the 21st century. Featuring signature looks by these and ten other notable designers, the exhibition showcases each individual’s unique sartorial vision, while also paying homage to the cultural influences that bind them together. Along with the rich materiality of the fashion displays (get up close to the hand-rolled floral detail of Vera Wang’s radiant cardinal red ballgown or the seamless construction of Derek Lam’s structured caramel leather dress), Front Row offers a unique window into the minds of the people behind the runway. Through video interviews, the designers share personal reflections ranging from the importance of family tradition (“My family was involved with textiles,” fourth-generation Chinese American Derek Lam says, “So, just like how doctors give birth to doctors, I think it’s just, continuing the family pursuit”) to the influence of childhood memories (“I’ll never forget my Aunt Juliana had the most dazzling qipaos,” Anna Sui remarks. “She used to always go to the New York Garment Center and shop for fabrics. One of her absolute favorites was burn-out velvet chiffon. When I did my own collection, I used that sort of fabric as a tribute to her”). SPRING 2013 | 79

In addition to drawing upon personal experiences, the designers in Front Row explore larger questions about the oftentimes complex and changing nature of Asian American identity as it relates to fashion. “I think a long time ago, it was much more about the Asian consumer, but [now] it’s about the Asian creator, and I think that’s really interesting and significant,” acknowledges Jason Wu. “You know, the first time I went to Paris, they dropped me off at the Louis Vuitton store,” he adds. Wu identifies an important demographic shift in today’s fashion world—not merely that of consumer, or even supplier, Asian Americans have become leading figures in the artistic and creative articulation of fashion design. (A look at MOCA’s own history reveals the marked shift in the participation of Asian Americans in the fashion industry: Just 30 years earlier, in 1984, MOCA’s first fashion-related exhibition examined the history of Chinese American laundry workers. Today’s designers, as the current exhibition acknowledges, have come a long way from the washing and manufacturing of clothing.) Despite using Chinese American identity as its organizing principle, Front Row is cognizant not to force these designers into a particular mold or attribute a certain aesthetic to their clothing. Melinda Eng notes, “I know I’m Chinese, but all of us designers consider ourselves designers first—we all have different ways of pursuing our passions.” Valerie Steele, Director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, echoes this sentiment: “Fashion is a global business, but

designers are individuals, and any attempt to fit them into narrow categories can be problematic.” Rather than attempting to characterize the Chinese American experience as singular, the exhibition succeeds in celebrating the variety of paths that have led to the designers’ collective accomplishments. FIT Museum Director Steele notes, “For many years, Seventh Avenue has benefited from the talents of many designers of Jewish heritage, including influential figures such as Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, and Ralph Lauren. Now many designers in New York are of Asian heritage.” Just as Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren became synonymous with classic American style in the late 20th century, these Chinese American designers have redefined what it means to be American in the 21st century. Perhaps Front Row’s most powerful take-away, then, is that it does the exact opposite of what it ostensibly sets out to do. Though indeed a tribute to the dedication and commitment of the Asian American design community, just as the First Lady’s decision to don yet another Jason Wu creation to the 2013 inauguration balls seemed to state, Front Row’s message is loud and clear: a new generation of not Asian American designers, but simply American designers, has arrived and is here to stay. This is particularly true in the dining scene. Restaurants eye competition with curious admiration, while striving to produce the most representative flavors of their culture. surroundings resonate fully with the menu, the visual experience fully primes diners for the impending immersive experience. You can start your meal in a variety of ways, but a signature dish worth noting is MEGU’s original crispy asparagus. The asparagus is blanketed not with the run-of-the-mill Panko, but a spicy Japanese kakinotane rice cracker crust. The result is an unexpected crunch with refined heat, joined by yuzu-shichimi salt that adds just a bit more citrus to the lemon spritz. No dish here is complete without a back story. The ceramic block on which the asparagus is skewered represents the earth, from which the asparagus have grown tall and fantastically tasty. One could go another route and open with an eye pleasing hamachi carpaccio. This piece is a symphony of ingredients that elevate an otherwise commonplace dish. The key is the “kanzuri” soy sauce which is a demurely spicy version of this well loved condiment. The component chili peppers are tempered by snow, calming the capsaicin to suit a Japanese sensibility, the familiar jalapeno, and a light touch of sansho peppercorn challenge the flavor of the hamachi. Another gem of a carpaccio stars kobe beef. A feather thin bed of this delicacy (American born and raised in Japanese tradition) rests upon a wispy and flavorful layer of white sesame paste. To push your taste buds even further into wondrous complexity is the micro basil scattered on the beef. The incredible load carried by such a delicate piece of beef seems impossible until your second bite and is truly confirmed by the third. As you are experimenting with the edge of the possible, you find that you are uncovering a delicate beauty of a different sort. Each slice of beef consumed reveals the akae plate below, another piece of cultural heritage. The originals of these plates drawn freehand are creations of Japanese National Treasure, craftsman Buzan Fukushima. One can only say that the disappearing scene of marbled beef is less heartbreaking when replaced with equally artistic splendor.

Just as the emptied plate appetizers leave you with a lingering rush of appetite, a glow of sizzle greets you with the Kagero steak. Starting from the bottom layer is a hot river stone, formed from Mt. Fuji lava. To shield the meat from the formidable bedrock is elephant garlic, a big-boned cousin of the everyday herb. Finally, a welcome portion of Kobe, which runs the spectrum of rare to well-done depending on when eager chopsticks steal away the morsels. In case you still found that short of decadent, the presentation is finished with a Hennessey Flambé. Despite the prelude of delicacies, there is almost always a longing ache for sushi of some kind. Of course, MEGU would not fall short in this arena either. Health benefits aside (proteins, fatty acids, DHA), the Hon Maguro Collection is a wonderful way to assuage your yen for sushi. Paired with freshly ground wasabi, each bite is enriched with a cutting freshness—which leaves the fat well-enjoyed, but with no cloying aftertaste. Dessert is a bit more of a culturally fused affair. Wasabi finds an unlikely mate with cheesecake, giving the sweet yet savory pastry a sinus clearing kick that can only be described as … delicious. Some more Western elements, including soufflé and ganache, are also available for the sweet-tooth in all of us. Finally, MEGU’s signiture green tea crepe cake, layer following layer, each bite is a reminder of the disciplined approach that underlies the entire meal—whether in the selection of the ingredients or the execution of its presentation. The essence of Japanese culture that has captivated the world and, entranced the global microcosm of New York—is its relentless pursuit of refinement. THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC, founded in 1843, is one of the world’s oldest symphony orchestras. Alan Gilbert, a handsome half-Asian, distinguished conductor, is a laureate of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a winner of the Grammy Awards. The New York Philharmonic has maintained its classic and elegant taste while it gained its pioneering spirit, commissioning or premiering many splendid traditional works throughout the years. The works of contemporary composers regularly scheduled for performance have included John Adam’s Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award-winning work On the Transmigration of Souls. Wang Liang, the principal oboist from China, has fi lled the blank that Chinese musicians broke out of woodwind, brass and percussion sections. Chair and soloist of the oboe section, Wang is equipped with all characters that mould a successful musician: ambition, confidence, and hard work. “Damn, what talent!” was veteran English horn player Thomas Stacy’s comment on Wang Liang. The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, renowned as ‘No.1 of the Far East’, first explored the ‘romance’ with the New York Philharmonic in 2010 by joining in the Philharmonic’s Concerts in the Parks programs on Central Park’s Great lawn. Long Yu, an exceptional Chinese conductor who is well admired and respected all over the world, led this cooperative debut performance. This summer show raised the interests of the New York Philharmonic towards collaborations with China in the future. Since then, the romance has evolved to become a Chinese sensation. Consecutively in 2012 and 2013, the New York Philharmonic, together with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, performed impressive concerts in celebrating the Chinese New Year by playing traditional music. The masterpiece performance, with Chinese artists including pianist Lang Lang, principal oboe Wang Liang, and Dizi player Junqiao Tang,impressed Chinese audiences with the combination of tradition and creativity. It enabled the music to speak, to feel, and to influence people regardless of differences in languages and backgrounds. The Chinese audiences got a perfect chance to experience the upscale concert and to gain a brand new perspective on the world. The New York Philharmonic intends to cooperate with China for future programs, such as the establishment of an Orchestral Academy in Shanghai, as well as Philharmonic performance residencies in Shanghai throughout the 2017-2018 season. We are looking forward to seeing these events unfold.

How may it affect the power distribution and standing of New York’s real estate companies? What is TOWN Residential’s approach to the uptick in Chinese buyer interest and demand? MAITLAND: The New York City real estate scene is evolving every day, becoming ever more international in flavor. The influx of Chinese buyers comes amidst a tremendous flow of purchasers from many countries, including Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Latin America and Indonesia, among others. My perspective of this growing interest from global investors is that the US, and New York City in particular (along with cities such as San Francisco and Miami), is perceived as “high ground”—a place to park cash and keep it safe, especially among the “1 percent”-ers of the world. YUE: Your philanthropic commitments include having adopted a village in Rwanda and you actively are engaged in humanitarian work—all while juggling motherhood. How do you find balance in all the aspects of your life, and how do your personal endeavors translate to your work (especially in a place as bustling as New York City)? MAITLAND: Balance is not easy, yet I realize it is essential. Besides the fact that I integrate my work into my life and my life into my work as much as possible, I also subscribe to the theory that “you can do it all, but not all at once.” I was lucky to have had much more free time when my children were babies and toddlers, and I was able to lay a strong foundation for my philanthropic life then as well. My children attend Friends Seminary, a Quaker school with a curriculum that includes community service as a requisite, so my children are service-minded and have a strong work ethic. We spend a lot of time together when I’m not at work. My son, Matthew, is an athlete and we all attend his games as a family. It’s not always easy, but we are a very closely-knit family and we make it work. YUE: Where would you send your Chinese clients to give them the defining NYC experience, or to sell NY, so to speak? MAITLAND: Wake up early and head to the “Top of the Rock” to watch the yellows and pinks of the sunrise light up the city. Stop by Magnolia’s Bakery on Bleecker Street for banana pudding with Nilla wafers. CHINESE REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS in the United States have been booming in recent years. The National Association of Realtors reported that over $7 billion dollars of the $82 billion foreign purchases came from Chinese buyers, only second to Canadians. Chinese purchases are across the United States from Los Angeles to New York. “There is new leadership coming into place this month,” said Robert Sun, the president of the American-Chinese CEO Society. “The Chinese are going through changes and reform and the real estate in China has some issues. The government is trying in many ways to bring down the prices but it is not successful.” The Chinese government is undergoing their third generational power transfer and its sixth term of office change in Chinese leadership with President Xi Jinping taking charge of the country. The new government plans to reduce bureaucracy, waste, and corruption that have become present in recent years. “Most Chinese think that the country will be more open,” said Lily Liang of Sotheby’s International Realty in response to the upcoming change in power in China. “Like people everywhere, they do not like new tax laws which will take profit from them, but they realize that changes in taxes are coming and [are] not avoidable.”

“For the new policy, I think starting this month, the Chinese government is putting restrictions on the second home ownership,” said Mr. Sun. “Chinese will have limited ability to purchase a second home. They want to impose a 20 percent tax on the second home and even higher on the third. They are trying to reduce multiple home ownership.” “The Chinese government has imposed these restrictions in order to potentially avoid a housing bubble,” said Kellee Buhler, Senior Vice President of TOWN Residential. “At the same time loosening the processes and policies which allow Chinese citizens to make investments abroad.” The Chinese, in response, are seeking to purchase properties outside of the country for their second or investment homes, especially in the United States where property is thought to be both cheap and plentiful. “There is a strong Chinese tradition to invest in real estate and modern Chinese also believe in real estate as an investment,” explained Ms. Liang. “Most Chinese investors are looking for long term appreciation as well as the safety of their investment.” “There is a general feeling that the United States real estate is generally underpriced and that the United States real estate market is a relatively safe investment.” Chinese buyers have also invested in Europe, but the market has been “less stable of late, leading many foreign buyers back to investing in the United States real estate [market],” said Ms. Buhler.

Investments in New York Chinese buyers are taking New York by storm and are purchasing some of the most luxurious properties in the city at prominent projects like Extell’s One57, 135 East 79th Street, and the Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York. Real estate projects with at least 40 percent of the purchases coming from Chinese buyers is a sign of success. “Interest among Asian buyers has risen dramatically in recent years, particularly in the new development market,” said Gordon Hoppe, the senior vice president and director of sales of Corcoran Sunshine. The deals are typically fi nanced by cash transactions with the exception of a few loans in which Mr. Hoppe notes that Corcoran Sunshine has a strong partnership with Wells Fargo and HSBC, fi nancial fi rms that have made strong strides in fi nancing foreigners.

Many middle class Chinese have purchased homes in the United States as investments or even to house their children as they attend universities in the United States. “A home for Asians in the United States is a status symbol,” said Mr. Gold. “It’s the equivalent to Americans belonging to a country club. They want it as a part of their story. It’s a real luxury.”

For buyers that are inclined to wanting more space, the option to purchase multiple units and combine them is available. “We have seen very large deals at 135 East 79, Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York, and Extell Development Company’s One57,” he noted about recent purchases. It has come to light that Extell specifically designed One57 with some of the most luxurious full floor spaces between the 80 and 88th floor as a nod to Chinese buyers and their belief that eight is the luckiest number. Apartment 88 is under contract for around $50 million to a Chinese buyer.
