富二代的 新传家宝 2010年9月末,比尔·盖茨和沃伦·巴菲特前 往中国向中国50大商界富豪宣传社会责任与慈善理 念,而许多受邀的亿万富翁并未出席。当时我在西 安,对中美媒体先后掀起的争议而感到吃惊:中国 人能够理解慈善的理念吗?作为世界上百万、亿万 富翁人数增幅最大的国家,中国是否对乐善好施的 慈善精神感到陌生?中国的比尔·盖茨和巴菲特们 在哪里?关于这一话题,许多评论者揣测中国传统 文化似乎缺乏“慷慨”的承传,这好像是说中国人 缺乏人道主义基因。 让我们不要忘了:盖茨在40岁左右因受妻子影 响,开始积极地从事慈善事业,在此之前曾经常被 批评一毛不拔。巴菲特在75岁时决定逐渐把他所 拥有的伯克希尔哈撒韦股票全部贡献于慈善基金组 织,并在2010年时做出承诺,宣称在离世之前将 把他个人财富的99%捐献给社会。在此之前据报 道他每年只捐献1800万美金,与他的巨额个人资 产相比甚微。鉴于中国的新富刚出现不久,国家尚 未建立起完善的税收和法律机制来系统的支持企业 或个人的慈善行为,中国富人依旧在学习施与的事 实,也就不那么令人吃惊了。 就文化上而言,当人们看看多次四川地震之后私 人募捐的数额,再看看中国历史上为数不少用于救 济学校和贫困的实例,就不难想象,作为一个有钱 的中国人,他无需是卡内基或洛克菲勒,便有同样 的问题:我是应该把财产留给我的后嗣,还是用于 慈善呢?

这种新理念,对于一向重视承传与遗绪的中国文 化有着重要意义。根据麦肯锡等机构的调查显示, 热衷购买名牌的中国买家特别愿意了解品牌历史 及传统。难怪很多国际品牌最近纷纷将旗下的传统 巡回展首先推向中国的博物馆。我们在此将向您推 荐10月20日至26日在麦迪逊大道举办的时尚承传 周,届时许多门店都将展示代表品牌传统和特色的 经典作品。让我们为纽约成为一座露天时尚博物馆 举杯致意!

NEW HEIRLOOM FOR TRUST FUND KIDS In late September 2010, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet took their philanthropy mission to China to lecture its 50 richest business leaders about the importance of being socially conscientious and benevolent. Several invited billionaires did not show up. I was in Xi’an and was amazed by the heated debates, which ensued in the American and Chinese media: Does China understand the concept of philanthropy? Are charitable mindsets alien to the richest in this country that has witnessed the fastest growth in the number of billionaires and millionaires? Where are the Chinese Gates and Buffet? Many commentators, postulating that the Chinese may be culturally pre-conditioned to be lacking in generosity, came close to suggesting that the Chinese lack the requisite genes to be humanitarian. Let’s not forget: Before Bill Gates (under the influence of his wife) seriously started charitable efforts in his 40s, he was often criticized for holding onto his money without giving back. Warren Buffet reportedly disbursed merely $18 million (a small fraction of his massive wealth) per annum to charitable causes before, at the age of 75, he made a commitment to gradually give all of his Berkshire Hathaway stock to philanthropic foundations. This was followed by a pledge in 2010 to give away 99% of his wealth. Given the short time span within which China discovered its new wealth and the lack of legal and tax structure to support systematic corporate and private sponsorships of philanthropic enterprises, it is not surprising that China’s rich are still learning the ropes of generosity. Culturally, if you look at how private wealth rallied to relieve the Sichuan earthquakes and how Chinese history was replete with examples of charitable funding of schools and poverty reliefs, you know a rich Chinese person does not have to be a Carnegie or a Rockefeller to ask the same question: Should I leave my estate to my trust fund kids or to philanthropic causes?

This is important for a culture that has historically placed premiums on heritage and cross-generational learning. According to many studies, including those conducted by McKenzie Consulting, Chinese buyers of branded products are particularly keen on learning about brand history and heritage. It is not surprising that recently many international brands commenced their curated heritage exhibition tour in a Chinese museum. We are privileged to give you a sneak preview of the Madison Avenue Fashion Heritage Week (October 20-26), when many stores will prominently display their heritage pieces in their windows. As the chairperson of the small yet highly efficient organization running on a limited budget, Young says the secrets to making things work are forming partnerships with the right organizations, making sure the partnership is mutually beneficial to all parties and striving for long-term impact in lieu of short-term fixes. 63

The interviews also get closed out quickly on a first to apply basis but this is just one factor in a holistic approach to decision making. Harvard's interviews last for forty-five minutes and are conducted by someone on the admission staff. Neither Harvard or Yale track informal visits nor do they penalize students who are unable to do so.

Rice is one of the few universities that track informal campus visits and admit it to your file; they like to see who has shown an interest in the university so be sure to register when you visit.
