First Sidewalk Art Show of 2024 on July 6

Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is pleased to invite the public to its annual Sidewalk Art Show, Saturday, July 6, 9 am to 2 pm in the dappled summer sun of the Nantucket Atheneum Garden on India Street. This is the first of three shows to be held this year. More than twenty AAN artist members will display their work, and the outdoor art show is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1930 by artist Maud Stumm, well-known for her portrait, figure and still life painting and her magazine illustrations, Nantucket’s Sidewalk Art Show is the oldest in the nation. These shows predate the Artists Association by fifteen years. Originally held for a few days in August, the art show was open to professionals and amateurs. “In 1960, AAN took the reins of the event, and it is now one of our signature offerings,” explained AAN Artistic Director Robert Frazier. “This summer we are hosting three Sidewalk Art Shows. They will take place July 6, August 17, and September 7 all in the Nantucket Atheneum Garden.”

In her book, From Clotheslines to Canopies: A History of Outdoor Art Fairs in America, Kathleen Eaton states that,“the earliest art fairs of record in America that are still in operation began during the start of the Great Depression. The first, founded in 1930, was the Nantucket Sidewalk Art Show—a small local event based on similar street fairs found in Europe.”

“With a ninety-four-year history, the sale has quite a following and is a great way to meet some of the island’s most popular artists, all of whom are excited to talk about their art and explain their techniques,” said Tracey Sears, AAN executive director.

We Could All Use a Lot More Laughter

The annual Nantucket Comedy Festival, which brings top comedic talent to Nantucket Island opens Thursday, July 11 at 7 pm with Ladies of Laughter, featuring nationally headlining female comedians, including Marina Franklin, Casey Balsham, Emma Willmann, and Jessica Casciano. This event is for both ladies and gentlemen, so make it a date night or bring your friends. Don’t miss this rousing night of comedy with these very funny women!

As a major fundraiser for Stand Up & Learn (SUL)—a year-round comedy education program for kids that teaches them life lessons through comedy—children are always a part of the Comedy Festival. This year, talented SUL Kids who have been working throughout the year to “find their funny,” will perform on the White Heron Theatre stage Friday, July 12 at 5 pm in a free show suitable for all ages.

Later that evening, at 7 pm in the Dreamland, a new event is coming to Nantucket: the World of Comedy. Star comics who hail from different countries and backgrounds will perform Friday night, each with their own funny quirks and idiosyncrasies. You won't want to miss this riotous comedy show that celebrates the hilarity of multiculturalism and the absurdities of cross-cultural interactions. This year’s Friday night all-stars include Simon Fraser, Tanael Joachim, Jocelyn Chia, Wil Sylvince, and more!

The festival concludes on Saturday, July 13, with comedians from Boston and New York facing off in the world-renowned “SmACKDown” event, the final show of the 2024 Nantucket Comedy Festival. Taking place at 7 pm in The Dreamland, Emmy Award Winner Bob Ley from ESPN will once again officiate and keep the game (relatively) clean as these comics swing for the fences. Beantown comics including the infamous Jim McMCue, Paul Nardizzi, and Emily Ruskowski up against Big Apple comedians Jourdain Fisher, Christian Finnegan, Cory Kahaney and more surprise stars you won’t want to miss.

Women+Wellness to Empower Women

In 2017 a trio of dynamic women on Nantucket—Meryl Bralower, Melanie Sablehaus, and Jeanine Borthwick—engaged with Nantucket Cottage Hospital to spearhead an effort to empower women on the island, visitors and residents, to take charge of their healthcare.

“Did you know that 80% of all healthcare decisions are made by women? Our goal is to empower women to make the right decisions...[we want them] to know what to ask for from doctors,” explained Bralower in a previous interview. “We want women to know they can take control of their health,” she added. “We want women to be their own advocates as well as advocates for their family members.”

Nantucket Island’s only summer event dedicated exclusively to women’s health returns this month when Nantucket Cottage Hospital presents the 7th annual Women+Wellness event on Monday, July 22, from 5 to 7 pm. General Admission tickets are free, but to attend, advance reservations must be made at eventbrite.com/e/2024-women-wellness-tickets-896553645087 — at press time, seats at this event were still available but are expected to fill quickly.

Lisa Clarey-Lawler and Heather O’Sullivan are the co-chairs for the 2024 Women+Wellness event, titled Myth-Busting Your Way through Menopause and Other Tips for Managing Women’s Reproductive Health.

Women’s bodies undergo numerous changes throughout their lives, and one of the most significant transitions is menopause. Understanding this natural phase and learning how to manage its effects can greatly improve quality of life.

Clarey-Lawler explained that at the end of each Women+Wellness event, attendees have been surveyed to discover topics of interest. “This has come up many times...and there’s been a lot of chat about menopause lately...it seems like a rich time to be talking about this.”

Fighting the Battle

Take a look at the young lady in blue pictured holding the striped bass. I saved this picture in my favorites album because I truly believe it’s the best photo I’ve ever taken. Everything about it is perfect: blue bucket hat, blue tie dyed shirt, blue sky in the background, and the windswept beach of Coatue arcing behind her. Her bemused expression—is she really happy that she caught this fish? Is she trying to find her place in this family or maybe even this world? There’s so much going on here! Even though I’m mad at myself still for not remembering this young lady’s name, I consider her picture to be on par with the Mona

She was part of a wonderful family whom I took fishing a couple of years ago. They were a blast. Although I may not recall this young lady’s name, I remember everything about her catching that beautiful little striped bass. She was rather short in stature, so I had set her up with an 8-foot long St. Croix Inshore fishing rod, pale green in color, with a Shimano Stradic 4000 reel. Missing Mammals

A theme of many of my articles is how special and unique Nantucket’s flora and fauna are. Often I highlight rare species that call the island home: endangered plants, rare butterflies, insects, threatened birds... life on-island that makes Nantucket’s ecology unique. Today, however, I am going to discuss the absence of a group of species which gives the island species character: mammals.

Mammals are fur-covered warm blooded creatures. Nantucket is actually known for its lack of mammals more than any particular species. Today, the island is home to more than 25 species of mammals, including seals, but I’m not including whales and dolphins which spend their entire life in the water. That is compared to the 77 or so state-wide land mammals.

People are often surprised that we lack many of the mammals commonly seen just a boat ride away. The ones that I think surprise people most are skunks (not too sad about that), foxes, and maybe raccoons. We don’t even have chipmunks!

So why doesn’t Nantucket have more mammals? Thousands of years ago, after the last glaciation, the sea level was much lower and the distance to the next land mass wasn’t that far. After rising sea levels separated Nantucket from the mainland, isolated populations of mammals like white-tailed deer were likely driven to extinction by indigenous hunters. When English settlers arrived in 1659, there were no deer on the island, and no moose, bears, wolves, foxes, coyotes, skunks, or squirrels either, all of which were still found on the mainland. Currently, 28 miles out to sea, few mammals can recruit to the island unless introduced via humans either accidentally (like raccoons or squirrels in lumber shipments) or on purpose (feral cats).

Today, Nantucket Sound is like a moat, functionally keeping the large mammalian predators from the island. That’s right, there are no foxes, coyotes, mink, fishers, and certainly no bears! Even on Cape Cod, there are coyotes. Looking at the list for Massachusetts, there are multiple creatures labeled “state-wide except for Nantucket County.”

America: a Promise, a Hope, & a Dream

America can be hard to see.

Oh, we can see the flags. On the Fourth of July, we have the red, white, and blue on every bicycle, tricycle, and baby carriage. The bunting hangs off of buildings and wharves. We celebrate the country in a rollicking, rolling carnival of hot dogs, ice cream, and beer. Somebody will host a firecracker fun run, somebody else will win a pie-eating contest, and then, in the evening, fireworks will guide us through the night with the light from above.

All of that is easy to see.

But there’s more to America then the one they sell at Walmart and Amazon. The other one works the squid boats on the horizon. Our nation is as tangible, and as visible, as gravity. For those of us who have lived here long enough to assume our inalienable rights without a word or a thought, it can be hard to identify all the blessings of our nation. We get tied up in tribal grievances and golf handicaps. The freedoms we enjoy are so obvious, so inalienable, so universal to us that we cannot easily isolate or name them. For many of us in line for hot dogs and beer, we live our lives in the invisible spell of American gravity; we can’t see it, but we feel it.

I have only recently left the classroom. Many of my students can tell you exactly what America means: to them, the idea that “all men are created equal” is as refreshing as firm ground under their feet. To claim the rights of “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” cannot be over-valued.

One young man crossed the Rio Grande with his father and his three siblings. Two years later, his father is gone, and the young man works and cares for his brothers. He can see America quite clearly.

lure to this rig. That lure, the smallest of the Hellfire series, can’t be fished wrong. It splashes and pops like its bigger brothers, the 180 or 200 series. But it seems that when my younger or shorter guests fish it, the 120 becomes a tantalizing swimming bait that zig-zags its way back to shore. Stripers can’t resist it, even on a bluebird August afternoon

I feel like I’m the luckiest guy in the world most days. I get hired to take people out and show them how Nantucket beach fishing works. I see families at their absolute best: relaxed and happy together, their real-world worries left back wherever they came from. I get to glean little insights about who they are during our three or four hours together, something that appeals to the retired detective in me. Some days I see someone overcome a fear or limitation that may have haunted them. Sharing in such a triumph, every tiny victory, is one of the greatest parts of my gig as a beach fishing guide.

"Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always." This quote is often attributed to Robin Williams, the phenomenally talented actor and comedian who left the stage far too soon. There’s a lot of debate about if the former Mork from Ork truly said this or not. There is no doubt, however, about the truth contained in that quote. The older I get, the better I understand this.

Fishing is therapy for me, plain and simple. I know, some of you out there are thinking that maybe I should fish more. And I agree with you! Fishing brings a spiritual joy, connecting the fisher with so much more than a rod, reel, and lure. There’s no better place to clear your mind than standing with the surf splashing over your feet, washing away the worries of the day. Just relax and let the steady sound of the waves replace the endless cacophony of this world and you’ll feel better in no time!

Fishing is the ultimate metaphor. Jesus used it, telling his two soon-to-be disciples, brothers Simon (Peter) and Andrew, to follow Him and He would make them fishers of men. Jesus was also solid with fishing tips, such as, Hey guys –don’t give up yet. Toss those nets on the opposite side of the boat and let’s see what happens. Now some would see that as a test of faith, but I look at it as Jesus

loving to see us put fish on the beach. We win both ways, right? Yes, indeed we do.

On a much lesser scale, Ernest Hemingway knew a thing or two about fishing as well. His book, Hemingway on Fishing is an absolute classic. But his masterpiece was The Old Man and the Sea. This one paragraph from that amazing work is everything:

“Then he began to pity the great fish that he had hooked. He is wonderful and strange and who knows how old he is, he thought. Never have I had such a strong fish nor one who acted so strangely. Perhaps he is too wise to jump. He could ruin me by jumping or by a wild rush. But perhaps he has been hooked many times before and he knows that this is how he should make his fight. Wow. There’s so very much to unpack in that one amazing paragraph. Is the fish just as desperate as I am—I will ponder this when I’m hanging on to a big striped bass on a dark night this fall during the Inshore Classic tournament!

I received a phone call a couple of weeks ago that made me cry. Tammy King was asked by the crew present at the awards ceremony for the Spring Sea Run Opener fishing tournament to find out what local charity has provided help for my wife, Beth, as she fights cancer once again. The answer was simple: The Marla Ceely Lamb fund, administered by the fan-

tastic PASCON organization. Here’s what tournament organizer Rafael Osona subsequently posted on the Spring Sea Run Opener Facebook page:

“The Spring Sea Run Opener is a lot of things, but more than anything it is a community...a family event. It's all those in the island's inner circle of fishing coming together to celebrate the start of the salt water season. This event only works because of the generosity of its community members through sponsorship and participation, and when one of our own is in need we answer the call. Stephen Toffey was officially selected to pick the local not for profit organization to receive the monies raised during the tournament but after a quick group consensus the choice was made. We will be sending $3,000 to PASCON @pasconack— we are all here for you, healing vibes and tight lines.”

I love our fishing community here on Nantucket. This group is absolutely amazing. We help each other out on the beach, far beyond the basic, “Hey, where are the fish” questions. We care about each other and we look out for each other. We compete hard in the various tournaments but in the end this is a very solid group. And the cool thing? We’re always accepting new members.

So to you, the mysterious Mona Lisa in blue, I say please feel free to join us on the beaches of Nantucket. You’re awesome in your mystery and your fish-catching abilities, and we’d welcome you. Missing Mammals

Usually, the more diverse a system is, the better. A higher biodiversity makes a more resilient habitat, for example. However, this lack of diversity of mammals has some consequences to other island flora and fauna which creates a unique set of ecological circumstances. A primary example is with ground-nesting birds. Whether in saltmarshes (sharp-tailed sparrow) or grasslands (northern harriers, killdeer, for example) or on the beaches (piping plovers, various terns, oystercatchers), Nantucket’s lack of mammalian predators makes breeding success for these species much higher. Our island is an important breeding ground for these species.

The absence of predators also means that what we lack for in large mammals we make up for in small mammals. Our populations of various vole, moles, and mouse species are healthy, to say the least. They are well-adapted to our sandy soils and, with so much open space, there is plenty of habitat for them to occupy.

I don’t have the data to show this, but I actually think that the most ubiquitous mammals on island is the eastern cottontail. These are the rabbits that we see everywhere, eating our gardens, crossing roads unexpectedly, and feeding our hawk population. They were actually introduced from the mid-west sometime in the 1940s. The eastern cottontail outcompeted the native New England cottontail, which has now become a rare species. The Nantucket Conservation Foundation did genetic work on our rabbits in 2015 and found that Nantucket is one of the few counties with New England cottontail populations still extant.

pressure to hide from predators, combined with more food available than they need, these small animals can grow in size as well as numbers. There is more research to be done on this for Nantucket, but in other island communities, many small mammal species are larger than their mainland counterparts, primarily due to lack of predatory pressure. On our island, however, our healthy birds of prey like red-tails hawks, harriers, and others may be keeping the smaller mammals in check.

The most unique of the Nantucket mammals isn’t on Nantucket, but on the much smaller island of Muskeget (part of Nantucket County). The Muskeget Vole is actually a subspecies of the meadow vole and isn’t found anywhere else: it is endemic to Muskeget Island. Also known as “beach voles,” the Muskeget voles are known to be much larger than the more common meadow vole.

In addition to the mammals that are currently onisland, several were previously listed which have since been extirpated.

Prairie dogs called Nantucket home for ten years with multiple active prairie dog towns before being eradicated in 1900. There was also that one (possibly two) raccoon that was seen for some time in 2015 and again in 2017, but not in recent years. The raccoon doesn’t actually count since an individual doesn’t make a breeding population. Other species, like our white-tailed deer, were re-introduced to the island after being hunted out some time ago.

Because of its presence on Martha’s Vineyard, there was speculation about the presence of river otter on Nantucket. In 2008, otter tracks were photographed at Miacomet pond, and the photo was verified by state biologists, confirming at least one curious otter visitor. A systematic survey was conducted for otters in 2014 with a total of 26 potential sites surveyed for otter activity. The survey team did not locate any otter sign (latrines, scat, tracks, or trails). However, it was determined that there is ample habitat here to support an otter population should they become established. I, for one, would love to see an otter on-island!

Other introduced species have established breeding populations on-island and are now part of the fauna. Norway rats were brought over with ships as they have throughout the world. It was almost inevitable with Nantucket’s central role in the whaling industry. Gray squirrels were introduced around 40 years ago and have small populations in multiple areas of the island, but not everywhere.

I mentioned the lack of predators earlier, but one predator has been introduced: feral cats. These aren’t just outdoor house cats. There are known populations of feral cats that have multi-generational groups living in the wilds around the island. Introducing a predator like a feral cat to an island fauna unaccustomed to such predators can have serious consequences. Feral cats are known to be a primary predator for shore bird nests such as piping plovers, oyster catchers, and terns. They are also known to feed on small mammals, on birds at bird feeders, and to cause harm to other wildlife. It’s a huge problem on island, and I encourage people to keep their house cats indoors, don’t feed stray cats, and never release pets into the wild.

We do have one other mammalian predator which is technically on-island: a fisher. In truth, it is a specimen at the Maria Mitchell Association as part of their scientific collection. It had been found on Nantucket, dead and washed up on the beach. Still, a fun fact for trivia night!

Mass General, she cares for many women with advanced maternal age pregnancy, and has expertise in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, perimenopause, and the gynecologic care of breast cancer patients. “Dr. York-Best was selected [to present] because she has a specialty in menopause, and she has handled many difficult cases,” Clarey-Lawler commented.

After Dr. York-Best speaks on July 22, there will be a short panel discussion with local medical professionals to discuss local options and make sure women know they don’t have to go off-island for different treatments. There is a level of service that many people do not realize. A Q&A follows for audience members to bring up concerns. The 2024 Women+Wellness event ends with a fun gathering where women can share experiences and chat casually with professionals.

“It is so nice to be able to bring this to the community for free,” said ClareyLawler. Check-in begins at 4:45 pm at the Great Harbor Yacht Club, and attendees are urged to allow time for summer traffic. Free valet parking will be provided.

Another student escaped their country in the trunk of a Toyota Corolla, with bullets firing overhead. The right to liberty became clear, constant, and steady when she landed in this country. These are children of people whipped, scourged by poverty and class, who left family and friends in Chinese farmlands, in Brazilian favelas, or in Ecuadoran jungles and came here.

Freedom is counted sweetest by those who have never been free.

If you look in the vans, pick-ups, and busses on this island, America is working hard and sweating. They mow the lawns all day then pick up a night shift at the Stop and Shop stocking dog food. They live a family to a room.

After a season, they buy a truck and a trailer.

After a few years, they get together and buy a house.

Just like my grandparents did.

The economic dream of the country hasn’t changed, nor, if we are being honest, has the reality. If “all men are created equal,” they better get a paycheck. The sacrifice required has not changed over the years, just the numbers on the paychecks and the bills. For some, this life will grind them down; for others, it will raise them up.

There are those who were dragged here in chains, watched their children get sold off, and had their dreams redlined out of existence, whose descendents still see the promise of this country as distant and bitter. An evening spent lifting 40 pound bags of Alpo may eventually lead to a truck and a house, or it might lead to a lifetime of herniated disks, minimum wage, and “Thanks for applying…” notices.

To Douglass, to King, to my Italian grandfather, and to the migrant on the mower, America is the promise “that all men are created equal.” That promise is neither a right nor a guarantee. But as a promise, it can be written down, placed on banners, and recited on pulpits and soapboxes. It can be challenged, attacked, and supported.

But as a promise, as a hope, and as a dream, it exists. It powers the mowers, it paints the walls, it builds the roofs. It preps the

meals, it washes the dishes, and it carries out the trash. In the dark of night, when the rest of us are pulled to sleep, it works in the hospital, in the grocery stores, and on the fishing boats. Like any other dream, it exists as a hope that “we will run faster, stretch out our arms further… And one fine morning—” it will appear in our driveway with a big red bow.

It takes a lot of time to arrive, if at all. The dreamers don’t take the Fourth of July off. Work is the finest praise this nation knows. Every hour on the clock, or under the table, is the slow downpayment on a promise that it can be better, it can be brighter, it can be easier.

For those of us fortunate to live a life that is better, brighter, and easier, we should look at all those working and see our ancestors. A hundred years ago, one of my grandfathers was prepping the meats and sauces at Anthony’s Pier Four while his future wife was working as a maid. My other grandfather was working two eight hour shifts for H.P. Hood. The slow blessings of their labor brought me to this glorious beach, with a chair, a family, and the prospect of a sunset in Madaket.

America can be hard to see. From Madaket, you can see it as it crawls the horizon on a fishing boat.

NANTUCKET ISLAND BEACHES

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock. The HERBERT T is fully licensed and insured and is fully equipped electronically. While you’re on Nantucket, do as the islanders do - catch some blues! $150 per person (minimum of 2 people). The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.
