Master Strokes Opens

This Thursday, June 20, Master Strokes: The 2024 Hale Juried Exhibition will open with a festive reception from 5 to 7 pm at the Artists Association of Nantucket Big Gallery, upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf.

“The theme for this year’s show is Preserving the Future. Artist members will explore themes of beaches and bluffs, wharves and harbors, marshes and moors, and the environment at risk of future climate warming and rising seas,” explained AAN Artistic Director Robert Frazier. “Our accomplished juror, Christie Scheele, will review members submissions and decide which art will be displayed.”

“I would like to thank Kaaren and Charles Hale for generously funding this five-year commitment to support the Hale Juried Exhibition and Hale Award for Excellence,” said Tracey Sears, AAN’s executive director. These awards will be offered to AAN’s artist membership with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place prizes, and the Hale Award for Excellence. “We are most grateful for this opportunity the Hales have provided,” she added.

“Christie Scheele is from the Woodstock, NY area, and has taught at the Woodstock School of Art as well as at AAN over the years. She has an upcoming June solo show at the Louise Gould Gallery on Martha's Vineyard,” added Frazier, “It will be wonderful to see her process and have her share her input and thoughts as she chooses pieces.” At the opening on Thursday, June 20, Christie will offer a special presentation about her selection process for this exhibition and discuss her own art techniques and styles.

In addition to the Artists Association of Nantucket, the Hales have given to many island organizations, including the Nantucket Historical Association, Nantucket Preservation Trust, Nantucket Atheneum, and Nantucket Cottage Hospital. AAN’s Hale Master of Fine Arts Residency program was established in the winter of 2019, through generous funding from Charles and Kaaren Hale.

Concurrently with Master Strokes, AAN is featuring the Summer Small Works exhibition in the award-winning Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street from June 21 to July 15.

The Master Strokes: The 2024 Hale Juried Exhibition will be on display through Monday, July 8 at Big Gallery, upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf, the former home of AAN’s Kenneth Taylor Galleries from 1945 to 1988. The Big Gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

Risking Lives to Save Lives

For several months, Egan Maritime has explored island responses to the many sailing ship-era shipwrecks near Nantucket. Virtually all these disasters happened during one of New England’s infamous nor’easters or other seasonal storms. Even the US Lifesaving Service (USLSS) on Nantucket took the summer off: they only worked from September 1 until the end of April. We, too, can pause now and reflect on why Nantucketers successfully rescued mariners facing the dangers of the sea.

Geschke Series Inspires Discussion & Thought

The Nantucket Atheneum has a long history of bringing distinguished people to Nantucket Island to speak. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Horace Greeley, Lucretia Mott, and Frederick Douglass are among those who lectured in the Great Hall of the Atheneum during years long past.

Around the turn of this century (the early 2000s), several Atheneum Board Members began to brainstorm and to plan how they could revive that tradition. To address issues of budget, they applied to the National Endowment for the Humanities for a grant and were awarded one. “We were one of only two public libraries in the U.S. to receive a grant that year,” Nan Geschke explained in a previous interview. “It was a matching grant, so we had to go out and find funding to bring up the total to about $1.2 million” to start an endowment for the series. The Geschke Foundation, founded by Charles and Nan Geschke, was the largest donor to the matching grant, hence the name of the lecture series.

For nearly 20 years, starting in the summer of 2005, the Geschke Lecture Series has brought speakers to Nantucket to inform and challenge island audiences with current critical ideas and issues. Stimulating thought and bringing substantive issues before the community has long been part of the purpose and tradition of the Nantucket Atheneum.

The 2024 Geschke Lecture Series will include six speakers with a variety of perspectives who will share their expertise in the environment, education, journalism, writing, politics, AI, and more. Tickets for each lecture cost $52 and are available now at nantucketatheneum.org. All lectures begin at 6 pm and will be held in a variety of island venues.

The series begins on Saturday, June 29 with war correspondent and writer Mitzi Perdue. She was a syndicated columnist for 22 years and currently writes for the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents and for Psychology Today Her work has appeared in publications including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Examiner, the Epoch Times, and USA Today. As a war correspondent, Perdue has visited Ukraine three times; many of her interviews were conducted in bomb shelters while the cities she was visiting were under active attack. This lecture will be held in the Great Hall of the Atheneum, 1 India Street.

On Thursday, July 25, Max Holmes, president and CEO of Woodwell Climate Research Center, takes on environmental issues with journalist Kitty Pilgrim as moderator. Holmes is a sought-after speaker and is quoted by top news outlets including The Washington Post, New York Times, and The Boston Globe. He previously served as director of the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Arctic Systems Science Program. This lecture will be held in the Great Harbor Yacht Club.

Geschke Lecture Series speakers during August 2024 are Dr. Jonathan Koppell, who will speak about equal access to education on August 1; best-selling author Bianca Bosker, who will discuss her latest book Get the Picture on August 8; and journalist and author Clara Bingham on her new book The Movement on August 16. On August 22, Piera Riccio will live stream from Spain to explore the cultural, social, and artistic possibilities of AI.

British Invasion

Now don’t let the history books fool you: the real British Invasion happened in the early 1960s, and there was nary a Redcoat to be found. The American music scene had been floating along with mediocre pop music for quite long enough, thank you. Exactly how much Fabian and Bobby Vinton can one nation stand, right? So the stars were aligned for a quantum shift. And here came the Beatles, just in time to fill that vacuum which nature abhors. The flood gates opened, the American population went gaga for everything British, and things were never the same.

I’m a tad too young to have been swept up in this particular British invasion when it happened, preoccupied with potty training when the Beatles first wanted to hold our hands. I got swept along in the second wave of English invaders. The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Eric Clapton, and The Who—this is the music that opened up my little pea of a brain. I listened to the rock opera “Tommy,” and my world looked different forever.

The British Invasion happened in the world of Nantucket beach fishing as well, starting in the year 2000. That’s when a young man named James Hatton made the journey to our little island from his hometown of Melbourne in the UK. Now James may not have the crazy pop appeal of the Beatles, the swagger of Mick Jagger, or the bombast of The Who. No, James is much more of the Mark Knopfler variety: quiet and somewhat under the radar, but an absolute master of his craft and a stone-cold killer when in the spotlight. James uses his fishing gear like Mr. Knopfler fingerpicks a guitar.

“Just by chance, my dad had brought home a newspaper that he had picked up while on a work trip to Leicester. The Nantucket Bike Shop had put an advertisement in that paper, looking for employees. I was doing a lot of mountain bike riding at the time, so I figured I’d take a chance. I had no idea what I was getting into!”

Bill and Kay Cameron, owners of this bike shop, helped James secure a work visa and, poof, he was off, storming the shores of our little island. James lived in an apartment over the top of Steamboat Pizza. His mind was boggled by the

She had come down to open the house for the summer, again.

When the boys were younger, they had all come down over spring break to take the shrouds off of the chairs, stock the pantry, and restart the water and the electricity. Her husband, Benjamin, was a marvelous Professor of Economics and a force to be dealt with in the Faculty Senate, but he was not particularly handy. A degree in economics and a hand full of thumbs meant that he tried to turn the water on himself, broke something, and she always called a plumber to make sure it was done right.

She heard him upstairs, today.

The school year continued, of course, and he would return to the college for finals and for grades and for defenses and all sorts of fussy things that kept the papers stacked and the door shut. The boys had school and lacrosse every Wednesday and Saturday all spring. And she would sit on the wet aluminum benches, with all of the other mothers, wearing that godawful lanyard and laminated card and cheer as the boys rode the pine. Then, after the season expired, they would come down to the house, in that chilly June fog, and zip the ball among them in the yard, never letting it into the bushes, never bouncing it off the house and she couldn’t believe they couldn’t see the field.

Jonathon, Alexander, and Tim barked at each other while the ball clucked into the nets on their stick and then, in an owlish silence, darted to another stick. The quiet staccato muttered under the wind, today.

She stood in the kitchen. She had left it clean. And Roberta came in, thanks to Theodore, and had cleaned it again a week before Memorial Day. She hated it. It had been redone entirely white, with an air fryer than might burn the whole place down and a Cuisinart. She hated the Cuisinart. What did she make that required that much chopping?

When they were younger, the Professor would contact Isky and make sure nothing had happened to the house in the winter. Later, he got off his wallet and paid the nice man for his trouble. Clearly, Isky had been by because that low hanging branch was gone and the flower beds bloomed without weeds or leaves. In addition, someone had put cream in the refrigerator and fresh coffee on the shelf. There was probably beer and Seagram’s nearby as well, she suspected.

Isky would be coming by, today, to meet with Benjamin and talk.

When the boys had gone to college, and Benjamin was amid his school papers, she decided that she would come down early. All she was doing was rattling around the big house, making messes that she had to clean later. She could do that down here. And in a fateful May, when the hedge had started to green and the forsythia glowed, she moved in weeks earlier.

She learned so much about the house. Not much of it good, so she wouldn’t share with the Professor of Economics. He had clear, rationale, economic answers for the drafts on the second floor, the dusty smell of the electric heat, and the sighs and mutters of the rooms. Never mind the mice. He had explained, patiently and carefully, that old houses had not been built as tight as the ones off island because they had to expand and contract in the fog. It was very ingenious of the builders.

When I was a kid, the first movie I ever saw in 3D was The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The movie was from 1954, but in the 1980s the VHS tape was released, and we all had the special glasses. It was fun in the watching and seemed sort of ridiculous. However, as a 7-year-old, it instilled a fear of freshwater in me that was hard to shake. I wouldn’t go into a pool or lake for the rest of the summer without thinking about the swamp man.

While I eventually got over my fear of the creature, there is now another green, slimy, and menacing thing in some of our ponds and waterways wreaking havoc on Nantucket. They may be small, but they can cause more harm than a person in a swamp man costume. I’m talking about Harmful Algal Blooms.

What is a harmful algal bloom?

First, let’s start with algae. Algae colonies are simple plants that live in the sea and freshwater. These photosynthetic organisms are a beneficial part of natural environments—only a few are harmful. They are at the bottom of the food chain in all natural environments and are an important food resource in our ponds and other waterways.

An algal bloom is a rapid increase in the density of algae in an aquatic system. Algal blooms sometimes are natural phenomena, but their frequency, duration, and intensity are increased by a rise in nutrients as well as temperature and sunlight. Algae can multiply quickly in waterways with an overabundance of nitrogen and phosphorus, particularly when the water is warm and the weather is calm. This proliferation causes blooms of algae that turn the water noticeably green, although other colors can occur. Some species of algae grow in clumps covered in a gelatinous coating and have the capability to float, allowing cells to stick together into large surface scums in calm weather. Other algae form thick mats that float on or just below the surface along a shoreline. A perfect recipe for a swamp monster!

There are many kinds of harmful algal blooms (HABs), caused by a variety of algal groups with different toxins. Different species thrive and bloom in fresh vs marine environments. The CDC defines harmful algal blooms, or HABs, as "the

British Invasion

craziness of the Broad Street strip in the Nantucket summertime. Yet something was missing and young James was determined to fix that.

“My whole life has revolved around fishing. It’s in my blood, it’s genetic. There’s lots of people who grew up on-island who probably take it for granted. I stumbled into it, they were born into it and never even thought about it. When I came here and caught my first four-pound bluefish, I thought this couldn’t be happening!”

James started at the bottom with the Nantucket fishing scene, literally. He connected with Barry Thurston, owner of Barry Thurston Tackle. He spent a lot of time in Barry’s downtown shop. “Barry gave me a lot of the information I needed to get started. I bought my first surfcasting combo from him—it was an old Penn rod and reel setup. I still have it!” James coupled this beginner setup with a bottom-fishing tandem scup rig, a pyramid weight and some squid for bait. He headed to Brant Point.

“My first striped bass was caught completely by accident. I had hooked two scup on my tandem rig and a 29-inch striper came and ate one of them. I ended up catching three fish at once!” James still laughs as he remembers carrying his keeper-sized fish up Easton and South Beach Street. “I was walking past Lola and the Yacht Club—got a lot of funny looks from horrified tourists, but I fed my housemates!”

James started fishing when he was 8-years-old, cutting his teeth on a lake located very near his home. “I began by fishing for carp and tench (a bottom feeder fish similar to a catfish). Tench are strong and hard to catch—my boyhood fishing romance was with tench!” James read every fishing magazine that he could get his hands on. Many of the articles in the British magazines were about ocean fishing. “Melbourne is dead center in the middle of England, as far away from the coast as you could get.” James would convince his dad, Brian, once each year to book a charter on the ocean. “We went to Cornwall, on southwest corner (of England). We’d catch dogfish—I thought it was the greatest thing ever. It’s hard to reconcile. The allure of the ocean had me, I guess.”

The fishing obsession grew stronger as James got older. “I was about 14.

Peter Blackmore was my best friend, and we had the most epic fishing adventures ever! I lived near a lake, he lived near the river. We’d walk miles to fish—whatever it took. We carried all our gear. Thick as thieves! He’s my fishing boy! Everything we did revolved around fishing. Our parents were very supportive. We went on multiple fishing holidays together. I’ve known him forever. Peter was my dive partner at age 10. Buddy breathing is the ultimate test of trust. We learned to dive in a quarry in England in January!”

James taught me a new term: skiving. Skiving means to skip school. To use this in a sentence: “Peter and I skived out every year on March 14 and June 16, the opening day for lake fishing and river fishing. Peter would sleep over my house on March 13 to fish the lake, and I would stay with him on June 15 and fish the river. Our parents thought we were at school. We were fishing for chub and barbel. Barbel are fun, strong fish to catch. It was the best day of the year for us! There were only a few of us kids that would do it.”

James spoke fondly of his forever friend, Peter. “I hope he’s coming to visit this year. Peter lives in Belgium now with his wife and kids. He’s an offshore geologist. I get fun messages from him like, ‘Hey, I saw these huge fish while scouting a work project’.”

James met Dennis Dias, a fantastic Nantucket beach fisher, and learned a lot from him. “Denny showed me the locations and where exactly to fish when I got there. And lures: what to use and when. I was very unfamiliar with the various lures. I remember that he was always telling me to fish SLOW! I love that guy!”

James is well-known in the Nantucket fishing circles as a big fish master. He has won almost all of the local beach fishing tournaments. I asked him for some advice for beginning striped bass anglers. James said

this: “First, the tide has to be moving. Next, you have to look for the white water—fish the suds! And the big thing is to remember that the nighttime is the right time!” James is a longstanding member of The Night Crew, those hardcore cats who chase striped bass when the sane people are snoozing. “Raf, Tammy, Parker, Cody, Victor—that’s my fishing crew. Chuck Duce, John Colton. A lot of people lie to you about fishing but these guys don’t! I respect all of these guys as fishermen and friends. They put the time in. All the people who are at the top of the leaderboard—they’re out there working hard.”

Of all the things he has to look forward to, James was most excited at the thought of his parents, Brian and Chris, coming to visit this summer. “My dad is finally retired and enjoying life. He’s the man! He had progressed from not knowing how to cast to absolutely owning it! He’s a legend—that’s what all my friends call him. He had caught some fish with me along the way. One day he sheepishly asked if he could borrow my truck. I set him up with the rods and gear. They drove to Great Point. My mom sat there on the beach and did her crosswords while my dad fished. He ended up catching five albies!”

James may well be the happiest guy on Nantucket. He loves his home in ‘Sconset. He loves his wife, Liza, and their 14 year old dog, Layla. He loves his job. And James loves putting big fish on the beach. Yeah, this Brit has been a very successful invader.

Danger in the Blooms

rapid growth of algae or cyanobacteria in water that can produce toxins or otherwise harm people, animals, or the environment."

Swimming in water with HABs, and incidentally ingesting it, can lead to stomach trouble, headaches, fever, and fatigue. HABs have been associated with human health impacts, including skin rashes, gastrointestinal and respiratory disease, and liver damage. Animals, including dogs, can also be impacted by HABs, with more pronounced effects that can potentially be fatal.

A few years ago I ran into a fellow dog-walker on a familiar trail near Miacomet Pond. Our dogs (both labradors) were leashed, so it was easy to keep them out of the water. However, she told me that her dog had gotten severely sick the year prior when he played with and chewed a tennis ball that had been in the pond soaking up pond water. Even the relatively small amount of water from a soaked tennis ball caused the labrador to need medical attention. After a round of strong antibiotics, he was OK, but it served as a warning: keep dogs away from HABs and that includes other things (balls, toys, leashes) that have also been in polluted pond water.

So what causes these blooms and how can we avoid them in the future?

The increase in HABs in the past several years is due to a couple of factors. One is increase in awareness: more people know about them, monitor for them, and there is an active outreach campaign to inform the public. The primary reason, however, is an increase in nutrients into Nantucket ponds. An overabundance of the essential plant nutrients—nitrogen and phosphorus—are the primary reason for blooms, and this influx of nutrients occurs form various pollution sources. On Nantucket, the primary sources attributed to HABs are fertilizer runoff and leaching septic systems. Though nitrogen and phosphorus occur naturally and are essential plant nutrients, an overabundance of these nutrients can cause significant imbalances in the water body’s ecology, and blooms are one symptom. Increase in water temperatures of pond water contributes to the algal growth. For our ponds, which have little to no outflow, coupled with warmer temperatures, it is a perfect set of conditions to breed HABs.

What is Nantucket doing about HABs?

The Nantucket Land and Water Council have been leaders in sampling our Nantucket water bodies and identifying HABs over the years. Their pond sampling

program includes the identification and enumeration of species found within the water column. Determining the species present is the first step in determining whether or not a HAB could be dangerous.

Led by Water Resource Specialist Emma Morgan, the Town of Nantucket now works collaboratively with the Nantucket Land & Water Council, Linda Loring Nature Foundation, Nantucket Conservation Foundation, UMASS Boston, Mass Audubon, and Nantucket Islands Land Bank to monitor a number of island ponds for HABs on a weekly basis from June to October. According to the Town’s website: “The Nantucket HAB monitoring team collects samples and conducts visual inspections…to determine the presence or absence of potentially toxic algae. The duration of a HAB occurrence is dependent on several factors, including physical and biological conditions, and therefore is not possible to predict in advance.”

Those monitoring for HABs look for visual clues in the waterbody. Generally, there is a green and sometimes slimy mass on the surface of the water. They can be dense mats and may look like green paint or scum; they can also cause foul odors. If a HAB is detected, as a first step, a red sign indicating that a HAB is present is posted. The signs are in English and Spanish and alert people to the potential danger. If you see this sign, do not recreate in that pond.

That observation is then reported to the Town via an online reporting form. Every week, the Town puts out a list of waterways with known HABs. The organizations that participate also often share that info, which comes out on Friday mornings. New for 2024, the collaborative team also takes samples of the water every other week to learn more about the algae and cyanobacteria in the ponds.

There are opportunities to “adopt a pond” as well for areas you may frequent, and to report a potential HAB, use the online form found at townofnantucket.typeform.com/to/ylf5CGky?typeform-source=nantucket-ma.civilspace.io.

Even though there is an active sampling and monitoring program for HABs, it is important to remember that the best way to “cure” a HAB is to prevent it in the first place. Some of the best things we can do as a community is to reduce or eliminate fertilizer applications, especially in areas that abut our waterways, and make sure you have properly sized septic for the size of the dwelling or hook up to sewer where possible.

What should you do if you think you see a HAB in a pond? Well, first step is to use caution and not recreate in the pond. Keep pets out as well. It’s a good rule of thumb that if the water is green and smells weird, stay out! It may not look like a creature from the black lagoon, but it might just be more dangerous to your health.

This is the 18th year that Jeff and Susan have worked together to make The Chanticleer Nantucket’s fine dining destination. The two of them started in the Nantucket restaurant scene more than 30 years ago and are the geniuses behind the original Black-Eyed Susan’s, now under different ownership.

The wine list at The Chanticleer truly is impressive. The 22-page selection has a French focus—White and Red Burgundy, Sancerre, top notch Bordeaux, Meursault, and more—and includes very fine choices from Italy and other regions. Oeneophiles will enjoy discovering hard-to-find wines here, and guests who appreciate suggestions can call on Sommelier Davide Fabbian, who considers wine “a beautiful universe,” and offered the pairings included below.

We began our lunch with a special starter that filled our bellies and warmed our souls: Chef Worster’s sensational Wild Mushroom Soup. Rich, earthy flavors of

morels, portobellos, chanterelles, and porcini mushrooms merge and mingle with fresh chicken stock: the soup is creamy with no cream in the preparation, just a finish topper of chive cream. It takes a special sort of alchemy to transform simple ingredients into something this intoxicatingly good. The soup is served with a grilled wild boar sausage and a pair of delightfully crunchy onion rings. Suggested pairing: Comte Lafon Volnay ‘Santenots-du-Milieu’ 1er Cru 2016.

It’s salad season, and Chef Worster makes marvelous use of the abundant greens available. We sampled both his Seasonal Lettuce and his Caesar. The dewy-fresh lettuces showcased in the Seasonal Lettuce salad are given a whisper of sweetness from an orange blossom honey vinaigrette and generously topped with tangy goat cheese. Mix in the dots of champagne with herbs de Provence, and enjoy the crisp counterparts of golden grissini. This innovative chef puts his own spin on a classic Caesar. Mixing baby kate with crisp romaine, choosing asiago over parmesan, and including sweet piquillo pepper, he enhances the savory, tangy crunch that makes this salad so tasty. Suggested pairing: Vocoret Chablis ‘les Clos’ Grand Cru 2021.

Chef Worster’s lunch menu includes a variety of dishes, cool and warm, light and hearty, all in generous portions. We started with the New Zealand Lamb Bolognese, full of robust flavors that can only be achieved by a talented chef dedicated to putting hours into the preparation. Merquez sausage adds a piquant backdrop to the lamb, which is ground and in chunks, and cooked low and slow with 21 herbs and spices to develop deep taste and hearty texture. The curl of the cavatelli is perfect for capturing the bolognese, and the Grana Padano served alongside adds a subtle saltiness when folded in. Suggested pairing: Tenuta Argentiera Bolgheri Superiore, Toscana 2020. Today’s Fresh Catch is always an excellent choice, no matter which fish is featured. Salmon was the catch during our recent visit. Perfectly pan-seared, the fish came apart at a touch in large succulent flakes. Served atop satiny, buttery Potatoes Robuchon and surrounded by tender-crisp colorful carrots, yellow and green zucchini, cherry tomatoes, caperberries, and nicoise olives in a pool of tangy lemon-butter sauce, this is an exhuberant mix of flavors that dance across your tongue. Suggested pairing: Quintodecimo Greco di Tufo ‘Jaune d’Arles’, Campania 2022. Among the more traditional lunch offerings is the Lemon-Garlic Roast Chicken Salad. Don’t confuse “traditional” with “ordinary”—everything that comes out of Chef Worster’s kitchen is extraordinary, and this is no exception! Starting with moist

flavorful chicken in large pieces, the chef folds in a mayo enlivened with vivid French curry to add a touch of warm heat along with sliced red grapes for pops of fruity sweetness. The salad is served on toasted gluten-free whole wheat bread, with spinach and sliced tomatoes. Battered onion rings are a tasty treat balanced on top. Suggested pairing: Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Hospices de Beaune Saint-Romain 2014. Chef Worster’s Maine Lobster BLT Style is magically good—lush yet simple, elegant without being overly complicated. Thick, warm slices of applewood smoked bacon are folded across buttery toasted brioche to form a base. On top, chef piles large chunks of tender, sweet, and succulent lobster meat, in just enough lemon mayo to brighten the mix. Juicy red and yellow tomoatoes and fresh greens add the L and the T. Hot and cruncy sweet potato tots are scattered around the plate for a tasty, crisp contrast. Forget lobster rolls: THIS is what you want for your summer lunch! Suggested pairing: Trimbach Cuvee Fredrich Emile 2016.

Michael, our skilled server, helped us choose a sweet finale. It took just one spoonful of the Marco Pierre White’s Eton Mess to understand why this is a patron favorite. Strawberry gelato is topped with ripples of fresh strawberries and crushed meringue for a light, refreshing finish. Dig deep to get a bit of everything in each spoonful. The Mondo Bossa Tres Leche Cake is a very well-done jazzy version: the moist cake adorned with sweet guava puree and organic blueberries. And the dark, delicious Belgian Chocolate Mousse is fancied up with slices of rich peanut butter whoopie pie, toffee-peanuts, and peanut butter cookies.

forth in the face of exceptional risk to themselves! This year’s reinterpretation at the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum of the history of lifesaving on our island takes a hard look at the reasons for the success of the USLSS.

Visitors to the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum this season will find new displays and explanations of the selection, training, and heroic work of our island’s surfmen: the catch-all term for those who served in the USLSS. The recruits had to be fit, have maritime experience, and be willing to adhere to a strict regime of disciplined rescue procedures. These requirements, along with daily drills to hone their skills with well-maintained equipment, meant all the difference between life and death for survivors. Each surfman had to know not only his job but also that of his five mates. If a surfman ever faltered, another crew member would quickly step into his spot and carry on.

So, we accept that all the surfmen were well-trained, worked with good equipment, and knew what had to be done, but is that all it takes to be a hero? Of course not, and here is where we come to the defining qualities that make the difference. Character matters, and the new presentations in the Boathouse focus beautifully on why persistence, endurance, competence, and gallantry were shared and employed on every treacherous rescue faced by lifesavers.

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Make sure you don’t miss the fishing while you’re here on Nantucket! The HERBERT T sport fishing boat will take you to where the blues are biting. Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock. The HERBERT T is fully licensed and insured and is fully equipped electronically. While you’re on Nantucket, do as the islanders do - catch some blues! $150 per person (minimum of 2 people). Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.

One morning, when his three boys were up before dawn and they had gone off to the Sconset Playground, Benjamin had rolled over to her and said maybe they should see about converting the old chicken coop. Then, as usual, he went back to sleep and she had to get up and get things ready with the boys’ mother. The two of them did the rounds in the kitchen while the little ones were swinging in the early morning, or searching the sand, or getting donuts downtown. The mother, Amy, was a 90-pound lawyer; sharp, organized, and had everything her family needed in labeled zip-loc bags. In the wet grass, they had walked barefoot down to the coop, considered, weighed, and then parceled out the family’s future on-island. By the next spring, the Professor of Economics had built a guest house so that he could sleep and his kids could escape. Since then, there had always been one child or another bubbling with febrile noise from the edge of the property.

Opening the house was no longer a test of home making. Nobody needed her to bake and freeze cookies anymore, nor did she have to make all of the beds, or excavate last years beach toys, towels and chairs.

Her life had become very simple.

The neighbors were louder. They rented the property out by the week to cowboys who were up all night, slept most of the day, and parked on the yard. They used the house like a paper plate.

Alexander, who kept such good care, had also suggested renting the place by the week. She promised to think about it, but never did. She couldn’t.

Because everyone came to see her when she sat alone at her kitchen table. And what would they think if, one day, she just wasn’t there?
