W here You Can Escape the Modern World by Suzanne Daub Nantucket Island has many areas of natural beauty, but none have the breathtaking drama of the untamed stretch of land known as the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The two peninsulas that join at Coskata and continue in a thin finger of land out to Great Point is treasured by many and considered sacred by some. It’s a place where the panoramic views are unmatched and where the canopy of stars sparkles from horizon to horizon—where Nantucket Sound meets the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a place where birds fill the air, fish the sea, and the harsh windswept land habitat nurtures innumerable small creatures. People go there to experience the wonder of nature. It is a place where the great generosity of a few benefit the many.

some cacti. The distinctive scalloped shape of the six cuspate spits or “points” of Coatue’s shoreline were formed and are maintained by wind, wave, and tidal action. Strong winds buffet the area and storm tides occasionally wash over the narrowest portions, making this portion of the refuge a dynamic beach. Reprinted courtesy of The Trustees of Reservations

Known internationally as a premier fishing location, this refuge has a stunning and diverse assemblage of habitats: coastal, intertidal, wetland, and marine, along with a red cedar savanna and woodland and a mature oak forest with diverse shrubs, vines, herbs, and grasses. Deer, rodents, other small mammals, and insects live and feed there. Grey and harbor seals frequent the tip of Great Point, and harp and hooded seals have also been seen there. And a wide variety of birds use these habitats for finding food and for breeding, including barn swallows, tree swallows, red-tailed hawks, kestrels, osprey, gannets, terns, gulls, northern harrier, and even passerine birds such as summer tanager. Piping Plovers are an indicator species that thrive and are protected in the refuge. Even during the winter months, the shores of CoskataCoatue are home to large numbers of sea birds. This remote 1,117-acre swath of land takes up the northeastern tip of our island. As fragile as it is wild, the refuge includes property owned by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF), The Trustees of Reservations (TTOR), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A few cottages and lots within the refuge are still privately owned and inhabited seasonally. The NCF’s Coatue Shorebird Monitor/Ranger lives in a cottage at Bass Point on Coatue from June through early September and monitors and protects rare beach-nesting shorebirds, patrols the properties, and interacts with visitors. The Coatue portion of the refuge includes more than 390 acres of barrier beach and is home to many rare plants and birds, dwarf cedars, and 10 nantucket HOME

Not difficult to access by boat across Nantucket Harbor, Coatue has long been a favored spot for swimming, fishing, and clambakes. In 1883, the two-story Cedar Beach House opened on Coatue, with the steamer Coskata offering a seasonal water taxi service once an hour between Steamboat Wharf and Coatue for summer fun. In 1890, they advertised “the best bathing on the shores of continued on page 90...

Nantucket” with “new suits, new bath-rooms, new toboggans, new swings.” Several years after it closed, it burned down in August of 1908. Land on Coatue was donated to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation by the heirs of Marie M. Abbott, Mrs. W.B.H. Sawyer, Mr. & Mrs. Alexander M. Craig, Jr. and Amy Ann C. Doran, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Moore, Sheron Lowe, Mrs. Hayden Hurley, Laurence Marshall, Bernard and Grace Grossman, Denny Doran and Mrs. J. Cleary, Elizabeth Sharp de Sieyes, and Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Kozar. To complete the holdings, the NCF purchased some land on Coatue. Also under the stewardship of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation is the barrier beach between Wauwinet and Coskata known as The Haulover. This is the place where fishermen traditionally pulled their dories across the sand from the waters of the inner harbor. This saved them from having to travel clear around the point (which they called Nauma) to get to the fishing grounds. During a storm in 1896, the sea broke through and temporarily converted the peninsula of Coatue and Great Point into an island.

The bulk of the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge— from just beyond Bass Point on Coatue, up toward Great Point Lighthouse and down to The Haulover—is owned and in the care of The Trustees of Reservations (TTOR), a private statewide conservation organization. TTOR was established in 1891 “for the purposes of acquiring, holding, maintaining and opening to the public…beautiful and historic places…within the Commonwealth.” It was that mission that inspired the families who donated their land: Mrs. J. Allen Backus, Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Sziklas, and Christopher K. Lohmann and Pamela Fezandie Lohmann, and the Backus Trust.

Landward of Coskata Beach and the Head of the Harbor lies Coskata Woods, a mature maritime oak forest with gnarled, windblown trees. Below the forest canopy are freshwater and saltwater swales teeming with hidden wildlife. Coskata Pond serves as a nursery for fish, softshell clams, and quahogs. The ridges and valleys of The Glades are separated by a few vertical feet, and they support plants characteristic of both a salt marsh and a maritime shrubland. Just before The Galls is New England’s largest red cedar savanna and woodland, known simply as “The Cedars,” and beyond The Galls is Great Point Lagoon, whose fluctuating water levels support changing plant life. In 1883, Coskata Lifesaving Station was built on Coskata Beach, just over 2 miles south of Great Point Lighthouse. It was the surfmen of this Coskata Station, led by Keeper Walter N. Chase, who rescued the crew of seven aboard the Canadian schooner H.P. Kirkham caught in a heavy gale on January 21, 1892. This tale of fearlessness and perseverance that occurred fifteen miles off of Great Point on the Rose and Crown Shoal is told at the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum on Polpis Road. The surfmen were awarded silver medals to acknowledge that the crew of the Kirkham “were saved only by the utmost skill and bravery and were brought to land after battling for twenty-three hours against wind and sea.” The Coskata Station was abandoned in 1953. Great Point Light was built in 1785, to help mariners navigate the passage between Great Point on Nantucket Island and Monomoy Island at Cape Cod. When the lighthouse was first built, there was not a keeper’s house built with it until 1825. The early keepers had to either walk or ride on horseback the seven miles to their post. They had to use a boat to get food and supplies. The original wooden tower was destroyed by fire in 1816, and a new stone tower was built in 1818. This lighthouse stood for 166 years. Between 1863 and 1890 there were 43 wrecks near Great Point Light. In 1955, the lighthouse was automated, ending the continued on page 110...

need for the solitary watch. During a severe storm in March of 1984, the stone lighthouse collapsed, and a few years later, in 1986, federal money was set aside for the building of a new Great Point Lighthouse, 300 yards west of the site of the old tower. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is responsible for the land around Great Point Lighthouse, which they call the Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge. According to their Vision Statement: Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), though diminutive in size, is an important part of a larger area aptly named Great Point...It will continue to be managed as a special place for breeding, wintering, and migratory wildlife. We will continue to provide opportunities for quality, compatible, wildlife dependent experiences for the public... Through strong partnerships, we will promote ecologically responsible use of the property, and continue to promote public awareness about the intrinsic value of dynamic coastal ecosystems.

Lang, getting a vehicle stuck while driving through the refuge “will change your entire schedule: there is no easy way to get unstuck.” It’s best to set aside a full day to explore this wild and beautiful section of Nantucket Island, but if time is limited, Lang recommends that a visit to the beach just beyond The Haulover is worthwhile, “Simply driving onto the beach at marker 1 is a breathtaking experience...something not to be missed...we do it on a regular basis, and it is still thrilling.” Another option is hiking. According to Lang, more people are visiting the refuge on foot. “This year we want them to sign in and sign out at the Gatehouse for safety: we want to make sure no one gets lost...a five-mile walk on the sand can be more of a challenge than people realize...they don’t always think ahead to bring sunscreen, bug spray, water...and it is difficult to get cell service.” The Gatehouse is open daily from 9am to 5pm during June and from September to Columbus Day. Hours in July and August are daily from 8am to 6pm. The beach is closed from 10pm to 5am. The easiest way to see the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, and the best option for your first visit, is to take a guided tour. The Trustees of Reservations offers 2.5-hour tours frequently through the summer season. The experienced

Access to the refuge is limited to narrow, soft sand roads that can only be traversed by four-wheel drive vehicles. A valid Oversand Vehicle Permit is required and can be purchased at the Wauwinet Gatehouse on the Wauwinet Road between May and October. Portions of the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge are closed to vehicles between May and August to protect rare and endangered nesting shorebirds. The properties are patrolled daily by the NCF Ranger, staff members of The Trustees of Reservations, and the Massachusetts Environmental Police. Visitors to the refuge who have little experience driving in sand would be better off taking one of the tours offered by The Trustees of Reservations. According to TTOR Stewardship Manager Diane 110 nantucket HOME

TTOR guide drives a 4x4 over-sand vehicle on the trails and will point out and explain the flora and fauna and different habitats. Occasionally the tours may include a climb of Great Point Lighthouse. “TTOR has a license with the Coast Guard: we maintain the lighthouse and are granted access,” Lang explained. At certain times,“if there are volunteers available, we may open the lighthouse for an hour and permit visitors to climb.” Look for notification at The Gatehouse to see if lighthouse access is available the day of your visit. Tours cover large portions of the refuge, but much of the 1100-plus acres are not accessible. “We stay on the trail system: we do not go into the Glades,” Lang explained. “We drive through the cedars continued on page 136...

Diane Lang, who has worked with the Trustees since 2005 and guided TTOR tours before she was made TTOR stewardship manager, explained that every tour is different. “The property is unique and things change so often...One of my favorite parts is watching a sophisticated businessperson become awestruck and ask question after question. The overall experience of being able to leave everything behind and see a part of the world that is fairly untouched is the best part of taking the tour... I used to end my tours with ‘Welcome back to civilization.’” The TTOR tour schedule is available at t h e t r u s t e e s . o r g /p l a c e s - t o - v i s i t /c a p e - c o d islands/coskata-coatue.html, where you can also purchase tour tickets. All ages are welcome, but dogs are not permitted on the property from April 1 through September 16, not even if they are kept in the car. “It is a privilege to visit this property: we appreciate everyone who understands that and follows the rules and regulations to help it stay in its very special state.”
