Guiding Lights of the Grey Lady by Catherine Macallister

Brant Point Lighthouse c. 1903 photo courtesy Nantucket Historical Association archives

Before the Cape Cod Canal was built, hundreds of ships passed through Nantucket’s waters, some beginning their transatlantic journey to far off countries and others headed to America for the first time. Lighthouses and lightships became beacons for seafarers who attempted to navigate the treacherous waters, particularly those around Nantucket, which proved perilous with its many shoals and rips. Lighthouses and their keepers helped improved the passage of many and helped Nantucket prosper during the whaling era and shipping era leading into the 19th century. There are three guiding lights on Nantucket Island: Brant Point Lighthouse, Great Point Lighthouse, and Sankaty Head Lighthouse. Each has special connections to the history of our island, sharing a common goal of providing a beacon for those journeying the rough island waters.

Navigating Dangerous Waters Nantucket’s position along the transatlantic shipping channels made it necessary to erect a lighthouse to provide safe passage. The island became a major seaport during the 1800s, and is still considered one of the best-preserved New England seaports, earning significance as a National Historic Landmark in 1966. While trade and travel routes often crossed through Nantucket waters, the surrounding water presented problems with its shoals and rips. Shoals are areas of sediment or rocks that are constant shifting, and rips are created from the meeting of ocean currents, marked by fast flowing and rough waters. The combination of the rips and shoals, made navigating Nantucket’s waters dangerous for mariners, especially at night. By developing lighthouses and lightships, many wrecks were 8 nantucket HOME

avoided and seafarers had better options to get to land safely if they ran into trouble with the currents. The Fresnel lens was a feat for lighthouses, focusing the beam that emanates from the lighthouse to reach further distances. This lens changed the way that light could be focused and was important in the development of lighthouses as beacons across the coast. It was developed by Frenchman Augustin Jean Fresnel (1788–1827), who created lenses using a central piece of glass called a bull’s eye surrounded by concentric rings of glass projecting beyond one another. This design allowed five times more light to be transmitted than with a traditional convex lens. All three Nantucket lighthouses were equipped with Fresnel lenses, and the original lenses for Brant Point and Great Point can be viewed at the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum on Polpis Road. The Fresnel lens from Sankaty Lighthouse is displayed in the lobby of the NHA’s Whaling Museum on Broad Street.

From Lighthouse to Life Saving Station The first lighthouse to light the way along Nantucket’s shore was Brant Point Lighthouse. This lighthouse is the second oldest in the United States and has been rebuilt nine times since its first structure was erected in 1746. Brant Point is also the shortest lighthouse in New England, with a height of about 26 feet. It is believed that Phebe Ann Hannaford, a well-known minister and feminist who used to visit Brant Point during her childhood in the early 1800s, used to practice reciting Byron and Shakespeare from atop the lighthouse, igniting her continued on page 43...

Summer Blooms for Your Nantucket Home by Greyson Keller

Nantucket is known for its roses, particularly in the town of ‘Sconset...such quaint, squinting faces, smiling as you stroll past. This season, we might be greeted by the roses more often than our usual annual visitors. As with people, roses can be a bit thorny, but give them a chance and you’ll see that the more attention you pay, the more sunsets you spend, a “New Dawn’ will rise. Roses can be a complicated and unforgiving challenge, but when done right, there is no better reward. Whether it be heirloom roses or hybrid tea, one thing holds true, you’ll need sunlight. A south-facing wall is ideal. If it’s a climber you had in mind, it would be nice to have a trellis, too. You will also want free-draining soil, with plenty of nutrients. Roses can be hungry. This week’s column will take you through the process of selecting, planting, pruning and, of course, enjoying your roses. Garden centers are some of my favorite places on Earth. I love the smell and the optimistic feeling as you walk through those automated doors. The scent of last year’s fertilizer and this year’s tropical hiatus waft ceremoniously in the air. There is inevitably a rose

section with displays of climbers who have just triumphantly completed their solo up the south face of an arbor, along with a hoity-toity section of David Austin’s best. When selecting your rose, think about what you want from it. Do you need to soften a wall with too many shingles? Are you looking for a hydrangea substitute for just under your first floor windows? Maybe there is an area of wild perimeter that could use an unabridged rambler? Whatever the circumstance might be, you’ll want to have a plan in mind. Let’s talk about prepping your planting site. Regardless of the type of soil you have, you’ll want to dig a hole at least twice the size of the rose you’re planting. Add your amendments, like cow manure, compost, bone meal, or Espoma’s Rose~Tone. I like to use compost and Rose~Tone. If I use bone meal, my dog will surely sniff it out and decide it’s best to dig up whatever I just planted. Chop and mix it all up like you’re prepping a cake batter. You don’t want this hole to be a haven of rich, decadent soil, surrounded by continued on page 11...

whatever the rest of your garden is composed of. You’ll want to mix in some lesser-quality soil so there is a gradual change as the roots move from the initial planting site. If you don’t take this step seriously, the roots of your roses will live a short and lavish life inside of the Rose bush ready to plant little amended bubble of nutrients you started it off with. It’ll be the princess rose who never found her prince. The roots will soon become bound, and the rose will suffer. You want the roots to travel to find more water, more food, sending them deep into the subsoil. Once your hole is dug and the site is prepped, it is time to plant your rose. • • • NANTUCKET by the Numbers April 13, 1918 - 2 hydroplanes arrived on Nantucket from Air Station Chatham unannounced. April 17, 1918 - Chatham Air Station sent a second group of seaplanes to Nantucket. Schools declared a holiday, and most of Nantucket congregated on Brant point to watch the arrival of 4 R-9s. May 17, 1927 - Seaplanes made the first roundtrip flight between Boston and Nantucket. July 2, 1927 - Boston-Nantucket passenger airplane service began. August 15, 1927 - Boston Airport Corporation opened the 1st airport on the island at Tom Nevers, northeast of the Navy Base. It had 2 1500-foot grass runways During the 1920s and 30s, many level grassy fields on the island were used by pilots with small planes that did not need long runways. Airstrips were used in Sconset, Muskeget Island, Hummock Pond Road, Miacomet, and Tom Nevers. In 1932, Leslie Holm, a farmer who lived in Nobadeer, plowed over and smoothed his cornfields with the assistance of former test pilot David Raub. Together they formed the Nobadeer Flying Service and bought 3 small planes for charter and instruction. Very soon, they decided to allow the Town of Nantucket to use fields on his property as an airfield. Up to this day, Holm's farmhouse is located at the intersection of Old South and Nobadeer Farm Roads. The Airport has been built around it. February of 1934 - a record was set: 31 minutes Boston to Nantucket October of 1934 - Island Airlines was established with 2 roundtrips daily between New Bedford and Nantucket In 1935 - Parker Gray built a small field & passenger lounge at Halfway Hill for his Mayflower Airlines In 1938 - Gray moved his airline to Nobadeer Field May 19, 1938 - 1st airmail flight to Nantucket August 6, 1939 - 1st air meet on Nantucket June of 1941 - Town of Nantucket purchased Nobadeer Airport 1942 - The Navy leased the airport and upgraded it with paved runways, taxiways, parking ramps, lights, and a control tower. The Naval Auxiliary Air Facility used the field mainly for weapons training. June 20, 1946 - The Navy turned the airport at Nobadeer back to the Town of Nantucket and Northeast Airlines started regular passenger service to Boston and New York. August 25, 1946 - The field was dedicated as Nantucket Memorial Airport to honor the 11 Nantucket men who gave their lives in WWII and all Nantucketers who had served in the war.

passion for speeches and orations. This lighthouse has stood through whaling days and war times, and today remains an important part of lifesaving and guiding efforts on Nantucket. The early builds of Brant Point were weak in design and the materials used. Gales and fires destroyed the first several structures of Brant Point Light. Responding to a petition by merchants and mariners of Nantucket, Congress appropriated $1,600 on March 3, 1825 for a new lighthouse at Brant Point. And in 1856, a more substantial amount of money was put into rebuilding the lighthouse. Despite the rebuild, Brant Point Lighthouse lacked a bright or sustaining light and so struggled to provide a strong enough light for mariners. It was important that sailors recognize the light given off by Brant Point to guide them safely into Nantucket Bay or the surrounding channels, so two additional beacons were installed at the “head of Brant Point, opposite to the best water on the bar.” Known as the Nantucket Cliff Range Beacons and called “Bug Lights” by locals, these served along with a pair of range lights on Brant Point and various buoys to guide vessels into Nantucket Harbor. Peleg Easton was hired as the first keeper of the Cliff Range Lights at an annual salary of $300, and a dwelling was provided for his convenience. Following the passing of Peleg Easton in 1852, his wife Mary took over the duties of keeper and remained at the station until 1856. In 1889, the front beacon

was rebuilt, and the height of the rear beacon was increased. The present wooden tower, the ninth light to grace Brant Point, was erected at the tip of the point in 1901, roughly six hundred feet east of the 1856 lighthouse. A brick oil house was added near this tower in 1904. In 1923, an apron of riprap was placed around the tower to protect it from erosion. In 1933, the light was changed from white to red so that it would not be mistaken for the increasing number of residential lights near the harbor. Brant Point Lighthouse was automated in 1965, and the tower was completely renovated in 1983 and again in 2000. Brant Point is equipped with an occulting red signal that flashes every 4 seconds, and is visible from 10 miles away. And the lighthouse is outfitted with a foghorn. In 1939, the United States Coast Guard took over Brant Point light, and it is still operated as a lighthouse and lifesaving station today.

“Great Point Is Alive and Well Again” Great Point Lighthouse, once called Sandy Point Lighthouse, is located on the northern tip of Nantucket. The land around it, now part of the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, is a windswept and wild protected area open for excursions to see our island’s natural beauty. The first Great Point Lighthouse was build out of wood in 1785. This island lighthouse has been rebuilt twice: once in 1818 and again in 1986. In 1816 a fire destroyed the original wooden tower. Though the actual cause of the fire was never proven, it was believed to have been arson. Until the new lighthouse could be completed, a temporary light comprised of a lantern hoisted on a triangle stood at Great continued on page 49...

Point. A sixty-foot-tall whitewashed stone tower was completed in 1818, with lamps and reflectors that were visible for up to twelve miles. A replacement for the keeper’s house was finished in 1825. In 1857, Great Point was equipped with a thirdorder Fresnel lens. Despite the new and more powerful light, 43 shipwrecks occurred here during the 27-years between 1863 and 1890. The Fresnel Lens is now on display at the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum. Great Point Lighthouse was automated in the 1950s. The first keeper of Great Point Lighthouse, Captain Paul Pinkham, helped to create a map of the shoals and rips around Nantucket. As the first lighthouse keeper at Great Point, he was expected to make the 7-mile trek by foot or by horse from Wauwinet every day until keeper’s quarters were installed. Great Point Lighthouse was automated during the 1950s, and the keeper’s house was boarded up and abandoned. In 1966, a fire completely destroyed the dwelling. A 190mm solar-powered modern optic replaced the tower’s Fresnel lens in 1971.

In March of 1984, Great Point Lighthouse crumbled and fell in hurricane-force winds. With the help of Senator Ted Kennedy, Nantucketers raised the funds necessary to construct an exact replica of the stone tower, built of reinforced concrete with a rubbleston exterior that includes some of the original 1818 tower. In September 1986, when the new lighthouse was lit, Senator Kennedy smashed a champagne bottle proclaiming “Great Point is alive and well again!” Great Point can still be visited today and can be viewed along with the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge and an abundance of seals that have found their spot along the northern coastline. The beacon of Great Point Light can be seen for 14 miles and emits a white flash every 5 seconds, with a red sector to reveal the rips and shoals.

“Fisherman Call It the Blazing Star” Looming high above the ocean on a bluff is Sankaty Head Lighthouse, a bright beacon that has guided ships through dangerous waters since 1850. The bright light of Sankaty Head reaches a range of 24 miles, and emits a flashing white light every 7.5 seconds. The Fresnel lens was installed in Sankaty Head in the original structure of the lighthouse, creating a bright beacon for those passing through. The location of Sankaty Lighthouse was crucial to mariners passing along the eastern coast of Nantucket, where treacherous waters led to many shipwrecks. A long list of keepers and assistants ran the lighthouse until its automation in 1900s, including Eugene Larsen who won the coveted Superintendent’s Pennant several times throughout his illustrious career continued on page 60...

as a lighthouse keeper. Sankaty Head was also made a popular destination for visitors and travelers who would frequently visit the lighthouse and the keepers. The lighthouse received many updates throughout the years, including the addition of a telegraph and telephone wire in 1886. It was constructed with a series of weights run by clockwork until 1933, when a small motor was installed. The lighthouse also was equipped with an “English wick” in 1875 that made trimming the wick less laborious for the keepers until it was electrified in 1933. The Fresnel lens was eventually removed from Sankaty in 1950 and replaced with two aerobeams. This Fresnel lens is now a part of the collections of the Nantucket Historical Association and is prominently displayed in the Whaling Museum. The greatest change for Sankaty came after it was determined the position of the lighthouse along the bluff would no longer be a stable place due to erosion. To avoid losing the lighthouse to the sea, ‘Sconset Trust took ownership of the historic property and succeeded in raising funds necessary to protect and maintain the lighthouse. In 2007, Sankaty Head Lighthouse was taken apart and moved 250 feet back from the bluff. This well-loved lighthouse can visited any day between sunrise and sunset, and twice a year the Trust permits people to climb to the top during “Open Days.” This year’s first Lighthouse Open Day, scheduled for June 20, was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions. The next one is currently planned for October 10, 2020. This winter the motor for the lens in Sankaty Lighthouse stopped working, and the light went out. Many residents of ‘Sconset and around the Nantucket missed the comforting beacon. The repair was completed in early June, and the rays of Sankaty Light are again shining over ‘Sconset and the Atlantic.

The Lightships In addition to the lighthouses, lightships were placed among the various shoals and rips to guide navigators through the dangerous waters. A lightship was essentially a floating lighthouse, manned by crews who would use beacons and, later, radio signals to let ships passing know their proximity to hazardous waters. Nantucket South Shoals extend 35 miles south of the island and were notoriously dangerous, with 100 or more shipwrecks occurring there during the early centuries of America. In 1843, it was proposed to Congress that a lightship be posted there. According to the report: “Many a gallant ship lie buried in one common grave.” Congress agreed, and the first lightship was stationed at Nantucket’s South Shoal on June 15, 1854. 60 nantucket HOME

The first lightship had 2 masts on which large lanterns were hoisted each night. Whale oil lamps within these lanterns supplied the light, and on a clear night could only be seen for a few miles. Lamps in the last lightship, which ended its service in 1973, had an intensity of 400,000 candle-power and could be seen for 23 miles. The lightships stationed at South Shoals were often blown off their posts. When the mooring on the first lightship failed, she was blown 50 miles and went aground on Montauk Point. The second lightship parted from her mooring more than 20 times: in 1878 a nor’easter blew the next lightship clear to Bermuda, some 800 miles south of Nantucket. Her crew had to bring her back to Nantucket rigged only with 2 small tri-sails. In March of 1892, it tooks weeks to locate the lightship after she parted her chain during a blizzard. In May of 1934, the lightship Nantucket was on her mooring just outside the Shoals, when the White Star Liner Olympic (sister ship of the Titanic) steamed through her in a heavy fog, breaking the lightship in two. The lightship sank rapidly. Four of the crew of eleven were rescued by the Olympic, seven perished. Over time, 11 different lightships were anchored off Nantucket. Crews were stationed at sea for three or four weeks at a time. This lonely existence led to the creation of Nantucket lightship baskets. With little to do during the day, the crew turned to weaving rattan baskets to pass the time on board. The wooden bases of the baskets were prepared on shore, while the weaving and assembly took place on the lightship. The crew found that the baskets had many utilitarian uses around the house and were becoming popular with visitors. While no longer made on lightships, they are still called Nantucket lightship baskets. The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum at 49 Union Street is dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of this Nantucket art form.

The Day to Day Life of a Lighthouse Keeper The keeping of lighthouses fell under the jurisdiction of early American leaders like Alexander Hamilton and the Department of Treasury before finding their place under the Lighthouse Service and eventually, the U.S Coastguard. Before the automation of lighthouses in the late 1900s, keepers of the lights and their assistants were responsible for maintaining the grounds and structures of the lighthouses and lighting of the lamps from dusk until dawn. The hours of sunset to sunrise were when the expected duties of the lighthouse operators were performed. Throughout the late night and early morning hours, keepers would be responsible for trimming the wicks 3 to 4 times per night as the oil burned and continued on page 74...

making sure that there was no smoke produced that would hinder the brightness of the light. During the day, the upkeep, polishing, and procuring of goods needed to keep the lighthouse operational were part of the requirements of the light keepers. Often times, light keepers would go above and beyond their call of duty, aiding in the saving of stranded crewmembers or shipwrecks. Once a better system of record keeping was created, the day-today of the lighthouse keepers was recorded and the life and conditions of the keepers and their families helped shape the personal history of the lighthouses.

A Few Words from a Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter Civilian lighthouse keeping ended in 1939 on Nantucket. Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum exhibits detail the everyday and heroic actions of lighthouse keepers and the effect they had on the community. One such keeper, Octave Ponsart, is kept alive through the details and memories of his daughter, Seamond Roberts. Ponsart was an assistant lighthouse keeper at Great Point Lighthouse from 1933-1936. In her book, Everyday Heroes: The True Story of a Lighthouse Family, Seamond writes that her father had “duty tattooed on his soul,” a true testament to the many years he served as a lighthouse keeper. Seamond says her parents: “were so in love with lighthouse way of life,” and shared their love for Great Point. Young Seamond was not born yet, but her mother and father enjoyed their time at Great Point alongside Keeper Greider and his wife. “Mom called it living in a desert,” says Seamond, “and glorified in finding dunes to sunbathe in.” She would also use her own spyglass to search out schooners and boats passing through the waters near Great Point. Many happy memories made up their short time on Nantucket, and Seamond recalls her parents’ initial disappointment when they were asked to move, “when dad got the orders to leave, I heard so many times, my mother cried for a week.” Luckily for Octave Ponsart and his family, they went on to occupy and guard many more lighthouses on Cuttyhunk and at West Chop. Seamond reflects on the sense of duty that came with guarding lighthouses, “I think any lighthouse kid, perhaps I should say all lighthouse kids, get duty drilled into them.” Seamond went on to serve in the Coast Guard and still shares the sense of adventure and commitment that came with being the daughter of a lighthouse keeper. Still with so much enthusiasm for life and her memories growing up along the sea in one of 74 nantucket HOME

the great lighthouses she says, “Did I love it? You bet I did.” The prosperous whaling era and Nantucket’s key location for transatlantic journeys, makes lighthouses and lightships an important part of history. The commendable actions of the lighthouse keepers, assistants, and eventually the US Coast Guard, helped to protect and provide safe passages for those exploring the waters around Nantucket and beyond. Lighthouse keeping provoked a sense of duty for those that agreed to keep a watchful eye over the lighthouses and surrounding waters and their families that joined them. Seamond Roberts shared one other tidbit that speaks to the resilience of Nantucket, and the place that her parents briefly called home while her father served, “ They always talked about the peace of the island there and of the special way “those” islanders handled life when it got hard down there.” Like the keepers and islanders, Nantucket’s beacons have stood the test of time, and continue to shine bright over the Atlantic Ocean. Details for this article were gleaned from archives of the Nantucket Historical Association, the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum, the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum, and Massachusetts Lighthouse Friends. To learn more about island lighthouses, their keepers, and the shipwrecks around Nantucket, visit the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum at 158 Polpis Road on Nantucket. You can also visit the grounds of all of the lighthouses. Helpful websites include eganmaritime.org, sconsettrust.org, nha.org, and nantucketlightshipbasketmuseum.org.

not planting too deep. You want the knuckle of the rose to be just above ground level. If you’re planting a bare root rose, it helps to start off too deep, then backfill, shimmy up, backfill, shimmy up, backfill until the desired height is reached. If you’re planting many roses in an area, be sure not to plant them too densely. There’s an old timer’s rule of thumb that your spacing should be two thirds the expected height your rose will grow. I find this to be true for shrub roses and most hybrid teas, but not as true for a climber. Before you plant, throw a 16-penny nail along with a handful of freshly caught scallop shells into the hole. Not only does that match the soul and grit of true Nantucketers, but the rose will appreciate the iron and calcium, too. On to pruning. There is really only one time per year that you should dive in and do a heavy-handed

102 nantucket HOME

prune on your roses, and that is in the spring, after the worst of the nor’easters but before too much growth is underway. You’ll want to remove any dead or diseased stalks and tie any unruly, but healthy canes as necessary. As with our children, the goal is to nudge them in the right direction. The second time we prune our roses is right after the fourth of July. THIS IS NOT LAW. In fact, none of this is law. We’re dealing with Mother Nature so you have to be flexible. This has been a particularly cold spring, things might be delayed. Ultimately, when your rose has completed it’s glorious and awe-inspiring show, you can deadhead. I’ve always been taught to prune to the closest five leaves. That works pretty well for shrub roses, hybrid teas, and even wild ramblers. But for climbers, I find it best to prune roughly six- to eight inches off the trellis, keeping in mind Roses climbing a trellis the five-leaf idea. Sometimes, climbers will send out these gorgeous, vibrant canes continued on page 103...

with no flowers on them. When you see one of these canes, look up to the sky, and do a little rose jig as thanks. Take this cane and train/tie into your trellis as horizontally as possible. The more horizontal a cane, the more potential for blooms in the following season. Once this midsummer deadheading is complete, it's prudent to feed your roses. I like to use either Neptune’s Harvest fish emulsion or the tried and true Rose~Tone from Espoma. Now, we wait. We wait until September, my personal favorite month on our little spit of sand. We will slowly, but surely see a second bloom. Not as Charlie Parker on a Saturday night in June type showing, but more of a Yo-Yo Ma String Quartet in the Atheneum park type of bloom. Both are beautiful and appreciated appropriately for the time of year. The final step of pruning roses comes right after Christmas for me. I always look forward to seeing family, enjoying the holidays, and giving a winter prune to my roses. This is a light prune. You’re really assessing and bracing for winter. Remove any diseased canes, tie any loose ends, and move on. This is also a good time to mound your roses. Mounding roses is really becoming more of an art as we’re having to deal with new pests like voles more frequently. If continued on page 108...

Summer Blooms continued from page 103

you’ve ever unmounded a rose in spring, just to find it loose in the ground with the tap root chewed to a pencil point, that is a vole. To prevent this, I’ve started adding some repellants. I’ll spray the base of the rose with hot pepper wax and then mound the rose with compost, followed by a light coating of mulch. This is when you want to cover the knuckle of the rose to protect it from the freeze and thaw that can happen throughout the winters on Nantucket. Finally, I’ll mark my territory with a motion censored, vibrating tube to scare any curious voles away. The solar powered “sonic spikes” are a good idea, but I find the battery-powered ones to be more reliable. In the spring, when you unmound the roses, all that compost and mulch can be spread around neighboring perennials and shrubs. This makes the garden as a whole more vibrant and amends the surrounding soil year in and year out.

The ultimate goal is for your roses to pay you a visit. There will come a day when you’ll be sitting in a second story room and you’ll hear a tapping at the window. You’ll think “that’s odd” and go to investigate, toss open the window, and see that your climbing roses have come to say “hello.” Welcome them with open arms. You can enjoy your roses and use them as cut flowers. You can sit on your patio and share a cup of tea (they prefer loose leaf as you’ll dump out the stewed leaves into the garden), or you can simply smile back as you stroll by. No matter how you enjoy your roses, I hope you truly enjoy your summer. Support the friends, family, and businesses that need you. Go to the beach, sleep in, and, above all, smell the roses. Despite all the terrible reasons we’re in this situation, we as Nantucket residents may never see another summer like this. Much like roses, if we want to enjoy the bloom of summer, we’ll have to endure the thorns of some difficult public restrictions. Let’s take it in stride as a community and live happy and healthy, day by day.
