News from the President… The course is in great condition thanks to Jeff Blanc and crew. Tell them what a great job they are doing when the opportunity arises! The membership committee under the direction of Jim Abajian continues to ring up new members to the Club. New Regular 38, new Special 13, and new Social 10. Thanks to all the members who have recommended membership to their friends. We have an outstanding facility to share. The Club Board continues to work on the recommendations of the LRPC. The current areas that are being addressed are: -To update Club By-Laws where necessary; -To add an assistant manager to oversee the restaurant and bar, plus to assist Jeff in other club management duties as needed. -To revise the employee handbook in order to reflect how employees can process and report issues that should be brought to the attention of upper management. Like all businesses, our club must review how we do business and tweak policies and procedures as necessary. We continue to maintain excellent financial strength through increased membership and good management. I hope you are enjoying your club now that good weather is here. Enjoy getting together for fine dining, golfing, tennis and at the pool! Don Harwood President

General Managers’ Report The Membership Drive of 2015 is still working its magic as 65 new and/or transferring members have been accepted into the Club since March 1st and it’s only May 20th today! Of those 65 members, 38 are Regulars, 13 are Specials, 4 are Non-Resident G. & T. and 10 are Social Members. We began the year with 410 Regular Members…45 short of our limit of 455. Today we have reached 444, or only 11 short of full with nearly 6 weeks before the reduced initiation fee offer ends. Our Membership Drive runs through the end of June at which time the $2,000 initiation fee for Regular Membership will revert back to its previous level of $5,000. So keep up the great job of spreading the word of the Club’s Membership Drive and make sure your friends, relatives and business associates apply for membership before the first of July or they will miss this great incentive for joining early! The swimming pool officially opened on Saturday, May 23 rd for the 3 day Memorial Day weekend. The pool is then open weekends until Friday, June 12th when it opens daily through September 7th. Natalie Fink is returning this summer as the head lifeguard and happily reports the return of 3 other Club experienced and certified lifeguards to insure safety and law-and-order at the pool this summer! These experienced guards are invaluable as Natalie will be training “rookie” guards this summer to fill the substitute needs at the pool. The pool hours are 12:00 noon till 6:30 p.m. weekdays and 10:30 a.m. till 8:30 p.m. on the weekends after June 12 th. All members must register at the pool daily and sign-in their guests…$5.00 per day for a relative-guest and $10.00 per day for non-relative guests. Cash is not accepted…all guest fees must be charged to the member’s account. Washington State Golf Association just recently raised the cost of providing a GHIN handicap to $35 this year. The Club had charged all participating members $30 early this year. The additional charge of $5 will be added to all members’ accounts who subscribe to the GHIN handicap system in June. Notice to all our “golfing members”…help protect yourself when lightning strikes…and it will…and you score a Hole-in-One! Join the Club’s “Hole-in-One Club” to insure yourself when the greatest feeling in golf happens to you! Here is how it works…you make an ace and you collect a dollar from everyone in the “Hole-in-One Club”…now at 145. When an ace is scored here at the Club by a member of the “Hole-in-One Club”, everyone in this “Club” is charged $5 and another number on their “Hole-in-One Card” is good for a call-drink of your choice at the bar! Just stop by the office to sign-up…it’s that easy to protect yourself when lightning does strike!! Entries in the Club’s Senior Amateur Tournament on June 4, 5 and 6 has surpassed last year’s numbers. We can still take more entries so simply call the office or Pro Shop if you are wanting to enter this great tournament complete with a “Pasta Bar Buffet” Thursday evening, then a “Seafood Buffet” Friday night followed by the “Prime Rib Buffet” for the awards dinner on Saturday evening! Any member who is “not” playing in the tournament but who wishes to partake in these 3 evening buffets, please call the office early for reservations as we will have some limited seating available each evening…plus Gary Winston’s Band will be providing dance music all three nights!! Jeff Thomas, General Manager PLEASE “DO NOT” leave CIGAR BUTTS on the golf course! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Volunteers needed for a very worthy cause! On Friday, July 24, Providence St. Mary Golf Tournament will be held at Walla Walla Country Club. Generous donations to Providence St. Mary Foundation support programs and capital projects that enrich the lives of our friends, family and neighbors living the Walla Walla region. All proceeds from this event stay local, enhancing care at Providence St. Mary. Many volunteers are needed to ensure this fun filled afternoon runs smoothly. Assistance is needed in many areas, including:     

helping participants with clubs upon arrival supervising the putting contest driving the shuttle carts on the course “hole-in-one” witnesses Providing a general knowledge of the golf course and country club.

This year’s theme is “Luau on the Green”, so put on your favorite Hawaiian shirt, grass skirt or fresh flowers and come out and support a great cause for the community! Interested in volunteering? There are sign-up sheets in both locker rooms. You can also call or text Jan Johnson at 509-540-5316. Or, just stop by the front office and let someone know you want to help, and you will be called. Thank you in advance for your time and support!

Bocce Ball and Bean-Bag Toss “Bocce Ball” and “Bean-Bag-Toss”… anyone interested?! It would be great to start a Couples’ League of both Bocce Ball and Bean-Bag-Toss! These games can easily be played on the Blue Tee on #10, making it very convenient to enjoy an hors d’oeuvre and a glass of wine! And if these catch on, multiple sets can be ordered and played by members on an evening basis. Another great area for playing these games would be around the “chipping green” by the pool. Maybe we can warp this into a season ending “tournament”... just think…the “Bocce Ball” and “Bean-Bag-Toss” Champions of the Year are ???!!!

Employee of the Month Jesus Martinez has worked at the Walla Walla Country Club for 3 years. In his three years he has been an outstanding employee and co-worker as a busser on the wait staff. His hard work and dedication makes him an easy choice as employee of the month. His smile is contagious and his positive personality is admired by fellow employees and members as well. Jesus is always willing to work on his days off when needed for different projects. Congratulations Jesus!

We are excited to start our seventh year here at the Country Club. The weather has been great and tennis may be able to start a little sooner this year. I have had several inquiries about lessons and men’s night starting before summer and we will accommodate anyone who would like to play or take a lesson. We will see if the weather holds. Please call or email Ann about times. We welcome Wa-Hi tennis to the courts. If you would like to play and they are practicing, please feel free to let Coach Peck (girls coach) or Coach Eggers (boys coach) know you would like to play. Members always have preference. If it is a school match, then courts will be available after the match completes. The dates for the school matches will be posted on the pro shop door. Wa-Hi thanks the Country Club for this privilege. We are gearing up for a busy summer with several new activities in the works. We have been discussing with the pros in the Tri-Cities about having a social with players from there, both men and women. We will keep you posted. Also, we are starting a pre-tournament group that will participate in several Pacific Northwest USTA events. Times and costs for lessons are on the following page. We have a drop-in policy with a pre-pay of four classes and you may pick days that you attend class. This means we do not have structured sessions. If you have any questions, please call Ann at 509-845-6236 or e:10scoachann@gmail.com.

From the Golf Course Boy, we sure have had some great weather! I hope everyone has been able to enjoy the nice days and their beautiful golf course! What a great time of year. The black locusts have already been in bloom and are dropping their white blossoms throughout the course. The fragrances of the various trees are very noticeable during this time of year. The driving range is once again set up to use half of the tee surface at a time and move the rope back daily. Once it reaches the back, we will start on the front of the other side. This allows for the regrowth of the hitting surface resulting in a much better practice facility. Thanks for your help. Over time a build-up of sand is accumulated on the faces of the bunkers, especially the practices bunkers. This layer not only changes the shape of the bunker but can also cause the faces to collapse from mowers or golfers stepping onto these edges. The coarse sand also makes it difficult to keep these areas healthy with turf. As in years past, the maintenance staff removes the sod and sand and brings the bunker back to its original shape and slope. We use steel landscape edging to establish the bunker edge. Once the sod has rooted, we will remove all edging and stakes. Please use caution when exiting these bunkers with new sod as it can pull away pretty easily. If your ball is near the steel, please drop your golf ball away from edging. Keeping it in the bunker. The course is in very good condition and like most springs the roughs can be very treacherous. However, this year we have dropped our rough height-of-cut from 2 to 1.5 inches. The roughs still penalize an errant shot, but balls are much easier to spot and find. I have received a lot of positive feedback by doing this. We have been able to get through the roughs 2 times per week and we usually will see a reduction in growth in the next couple weeks. With most of our spring maintenance work finished, the crew is trying to prepare the course for another summer in Walla Walla. Having the course healthy in June makes July, August and September much easier months to maintain good playing conditions throughout this critical time. Please remember to use course etiquette by keeping your carts away from tees and greens, and using the cart paths whenever possible. Please keep carts outside of the “white lines” painted on each approach. Sand and seed containers are on all carts. Walkers can pick up containers on the 1st and 10th tee to repair divots. When finishing a shot from a bunker, please remember to rake area and place the bunker rake back in the bunker. One of the most important things is to repair any ball marks that are left on the greens. Properly repaired ball marks recover very quickly and have little effect on the putting surface. If you are not sure the proper way to repair a ball mark, please contact Pro Shop staff or myself and we would love to give a demonstration on proper ball mark repair. I am sure if you practice chipping you have seen the new ball pickers. They look like a “bingo wheel” and pick up balls very easily. To empty the balls there are two ears that fold over and hold open the wires so that the balls fall out. I once again have the privilege to volunteer at this year’s U.S. Open being played at Chambers Bay! I will try and send pics and updates when possible. See you on the course! Jeff Blanc,CGCS

PLEASE “DO NOT” leave CIGAR BUTTS on the golf course! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Women’s 18 Hole Golf Association Congratulations to all 18 Hole Association members who played in the first tournament of the 2015 season. The Best Ball Tournament is not only a fun competition and great way to socialize, but an opportunity to become familiar with the rules of match play. We get few opportunities to practice this format, and appreciate the chance to expand our knowledge of the game of golf in all it’s iterations. A big thank you to the chair, Claire Knipe, and her committee members, Helen Adams, Sam Long, Lois Ping and Jan Johnson. Another big “thank you” goes to the monthly committees who make sure that the notebooks used by members to record chip-ins, birdies and pars are in the 19th Hole every Thursday, then put safely away after the last group has gone through. They also select the special game we play on the last Thursday of the month. Having two responsible people taking care of these details helps our association run smoothly and adds to the enjoyment of our competitions. Some committees choose to go above and beyond, with tasty treats, which we certainly appreciate!

Our next tournament of the season is our Handicap Tournament. This tournament is individual stroke play, played on 3 consecutive Thursdays; this year on June 11th, 18th and 25th. The best 2 out of 3 scores are tallied to determine the winners. What a deal; how many times do we get to throw out a score from a “not so good” round? We look forward to having a good turn-out for this popular tournament. I look forward to seeing you all on the course! Janey McKern, President

2) ‘To-Go’ orders are now available any time!

The new minimum cycles will end on the day of the month the “main’ member was born… example: Jim Abajian was born on the 11th day of his birthday month so his and Rhonda’s minimum cycle will run from the 12th of every month through the 11th of the following month. It’s very simple, just remember to have spent your minimum of $45 no later than the day of the month of your birthday! Those who have birthdays later than the end of the month, will fall on the last day of the month. So if you were born on the 31st and there are only 30 days in the current month, your cycle would end on the 30th. Board of Directors
