General Managers Report The Board of Directors has approved to continue “Men’s Day” on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. from the first tee only on a permanent basis. This trial policy of starting everyone off the first tee only was well received by the membership this spring. It was found that the men have plenty of time to find a tee-time during “Men’s Day” and more men and women are enjoying the course before the restrictions of “men only” beginning at 11:30 a.m. Good job by everyone in making our golf course more accessible to all members! The Club’s “Membership Drive” was an outstanding success as the Club accepted 97 new and/ or transferring members in a short four month time period!! Of those 97 members, 57 are Regulars, 18 are Specials (under 36 years of age), 4 are Non-Resident G. & T. and 18 are Social Members. The Club now has 460 Regular Members…5 more than the old limit of 455 as the Board of Directors approved to raise our limit to 465. The Club’s big “Outdoor Family and New Member Appreciation Party” is right around the corner…it’s scheduled for Wednesday evening, August 5 th alongside the swimming pool! Beginning at 5:00 p.m. and running till dusk, all members and their children are welcomed to attend this fun family-party complete with a barbecue picnic of burgers, hot dogs and German Sausages plus all the trimmings along with sodas and beer all hosted by the Club…wine and spirits will be offered for purchase. We’ll be using the pool, a giant “Slip n’ Slide” and a high pressure water hose to keep everyone cool plus we’ll have Bocce Ball, Bean-Bag Toss, miniature golf, a chipping area and a large “sand box” for all the children to enjoy. The “dress code” for this evening will be “Beach Attire”…meaning a swimming suit, tee-shirt and flip-flops are perfect. Also this night, we will draw three lucky members from all the members who sponsored the 84 brand new members from the Club’s highly successful “Membership Drive”. Please call for reservations to help Chef Mike in planning his menu for this fun -filled party!! Chef Mike’s second “Chef’s Table” of the year will take place on Friday, August 7th. We still have a few openings at this time, so call early as Chef Mike limits this wonderful dinner to the first 24 reservations. Chef Mike never prints a menu for the “Chef’s Table”, it’s always left in his hands! The next “Chef’s Table” isn’t until November 6th, so make your reservations early as these dinners always fill. For all you competitive golfers, the All City Tournament is played at the Club on Saturday, August 8 th followed by the second round at Veterans Memorial on Sunday, August 9 th. Call the Pro Shop now as entries are now available. The Club’s final two major tournaments of the year are quickly approaching. On Friday, August 21 st and Saturday, August 22nd the “Men’s Member-Guest” will be played to determine its champions for 2015. This tournament begins on Thursday evening with a “live team auction” with hosted hors d’oervres followed by the first round on Friday morning with the competition counting both balls on the odd holes and the best-ball on the even holes – modified Stableford Points. After Friday’s lunch, all teams eligible will participate in the “Horse Race”. During the second round on Saturday, the two-person teams reverse Friday’s scoring by counting both balls on the even holes and the best-ball on the odd holes – again with modified Stableford Points. The champions will be crowned Saturday evening following the hosted “Pasta Bar” dinner. All wives of players are encouraged to attend Thursday and Saturday evening functions. There is still time to pick your guest and fill out your entry form. Your entry must be received by the Pro Shop or the Club Office by Friday, August 14 th to participate, so don’t wait too long. The final major golf tournament of the year…the “Couples’ Fall Classic” Tournament takes place over the weekend of September 12 & 13. This is always a popular golfing event with many of our members rekindling friendships with the nonmember couples who always return for the fun and festivities…and “yes”, even the golf! This event usually fills to its capacity quickly, so don’t dally on sending in your entry form! Please remember the Club’s “dress code” both inside the Clubhouse and on the golf course and practice areas while visiting the Club. The main dress code problems seen when visiting the Clubhouse are usually tee-shirts and/or tank-tops being worn by males. Just remember that all males – both youngsters and adults – need to have a collar on their shirt at all times in the Clubhouse. On the golf course side, the main issues are again tee-shirts on males and ladies’ tops that are sleeve-less but without a collar. Remember, women’s tops must have sleeves if no collar is present, or tops without sleeves must have a collar. On the length of shorts, skirts/skorts, the Golf Committee and Board revised the length to no shorter than 6” above the top of the knee…it was previously set at no shorter than 4 ½” above the top of the knee. Following the Club’s dress code will make everyone’s experience more enjoyable when visiting the Club! Jeffrey C. Thomas General Manager

Employee of the Month Christopher Mares has been an employee of the Club for seven years. Starting out as a dishwasher, Chris quickly elevated to prep cook and is now a line cook. You may recognize him at any of our Club functions as he is always manning an action station involving salads, carving, or pasta bar. Chris has a great attitude and a strong desire to please the membership. It’s a privilege to have Christopher as a team member of the Walla Walla Country Club! “Thank you” Chris for all your dedicated work!

News from the Golf Shop Update on Golf Tournaments and special events: Couples’ Chapman This year the tournament had an unexpected heat wave with temperatures well above 100 degrees. Fortunately no one ended up with heat stroke or unable to finish the rounds. Our members Ronnie Smith and Dona Dunovant tied for third place with a two day total of 152 in flight one. Joanne Dunham and Robb Dale took 2nd net for flight two and Phil and Maggie Stalcup finished tied for third net in flight three. Thank you to all those who played and endured the heat. Fourth of July Tournament Once again we had a full field for the 4th of July Couple Tournament. First gross was a tie between Larry & Kathy Mauer who teamed with Curtis Kuhlman & Mindy Stonebraker, and Jim & Pam Hayner with Mike & Liz Mitchell, both shooting 60. First Net with a score of 43 went to Bruce & Tina Dumser and Brian & Alison Bruggeman. Best Cart and Best Dressed Ronnie Smith and Paige Blackburn. Special Games included BEST DRESSED and CART DECORATIONS.

Special thanks to the committee for all their hard work. Gerard & Joan Schille and Mike & Tracey Eytchison.

Early Morning Tee times The golf course has been in demand early in the morning before official tee times begin at 7:00 a.m. If you are playing early, please be aware that no carts will be available before 7:00 a.m. Also the maintenance crew will continue to get the golf course ready so please try to work around them. If you need to skip a hole or pick up a putt that would be great. They are working as fast as they can to get the course ready for the day. Thank you! One more thing to keep in mind most of those playing early are doing so before they head to work so please be considerate of them and if you are playing at a slower pace please let them play through. Finally, if you are a late evening player going out to play, we are asking that golf carts be returned a little after sunset. The board outside the golf shop will indicate what time carts need to be back and this will change daily. If you want to continue to play after that time, you may do so but you will have to walk. Driving range A new area has been created on the driving range that will affect all members and guest using the driving range. To prevent the golf balls from going over the net, the use of irons only will be allowed on the grass area in front of the yellow rope. Drivers and fairway woods must be hit from the back tee area on the mat. Use the opposite side of where irons are being hit. Range balls will be place in the area’s for you to use. IF YOU CAN HIT IT OVER THE NET, PLEASE DON’T! The hours of the driving range are from 7:30 a.m. each morning except on Monday which will be 11:00 a.m. This change will allow the range tee to be mowed set each day. The range will close each evening at a set time which is posted on the driving range. Please refrain from hitting balls after posted time, we have to allow the staff time to pick up range balls. If you arrive at closing or 5 to 10 minutes before, do not plan on hitting balls. Dress Code: Update and change on the dress code in regards to shorts, skorts, or skirts length. The length is now 6” or equivalent of a dollar bill. This applies directly to both men, women and juniors. Before coming out to play or use the driving range or to chip and putt, take a moment to measure your short length if you think it may be too short. Thank you for helping us with the dress code.

Bocce Ball and Bean-Bag Toss “Bocce Ball” and “Bean-Bag-Toss”… anyone interested?! It would be great to start a Couples’ League of both Bocce Ball and Bean-Bag-Toss! These games can easily be played on the Blue Tee on #10, making it very convenient to enjoy an hors d’oeuvre and a glass of wine! And if these catch on, multiple sets can be ordered and played by members on an evening basis. Another great area for playing these games would be around the “chipping green” by the pool. Maybe we can warp this into a season ending “tournament”... just think…the “Bocce Ball” and “Bean-Bag-Toss” Champions of the Year are ???!!!

Hole-in-One July 15th, 2015 Rob Olson had a hole-in-one on the 17th hole, 197 yards using his 5 iron. This was has 1st Hole-in-one. It was witnessed by his playing partner Glyn Marsh, Gerald Larson and Glyn Marsh Jr.

From the Golf Course Having broken temperature records in June and July, I am really not sure what August has in store for us! Extreme daytime and warm nighttime temperatures made late June and early July a tough time keeping the course healthy. Obviously, extreme summers really show how much better our irrigation system is and as we continue to fine tune the individual stations we actually water less but much more efficiently. When watering the golf course, I take many things into account, but the main goal is consistency throughout the golf course. That is why when we do irrigate we water the entire course that night. That way, one nine isn’t drier or wetter than the other. There can be a problem programming the irrigation system like this as I am unable to put a large amount of water out because the water window is not long enough. Prolonged warm temperatures can cause problems because it slowly wears down the turf plant and the high nighttime temperatures does not allow the plant to rest and recover enough for the next day. The course is closed, Mondays until noon and is used as a maintenance day, usually on greens. That may Watering greens at Chamber Bay! consist of spraying, verticutting, topdressing, aeration, etc. Please keep in mind that on that day we are doing a cultural practice that might not make for good putting that day, but is of the utmost importance in the wellbeing of the putting greens for the golf season. Greens are mowed at least 5 days per week and sometimes 7 depending on what cultural practice we are performing or if the course is open all day Monday. Without the opportunity to complete these tasks on Monday’s, I would not be able to give the membership a consistent putting surface. Thank you! Early sunlight means early golfers! We will do our best to work “around” and “through” you but remember we need to complete our work and any help you give us will be greatly appreciated. Also remember, a sprinkler or two may come on while you are playing! The Board has approved the removal of the ½ dead willow on the right side of #12 and the black locust on the left side of #15. Any questions please contact the Board of Directors. With the help of Brady Sharp, we are making short etiquette videos available to view covering varying topics like raking bunkers, ball repair, and using the new ball pickers on the practice greens. Hopefully they will be helpful and fun! Jeff Blanc, CGCS

1) The Club added an OFF-PREMISES WINE SALES endor sement to its Liquor License. This OFF-PREMISES WINE SALES endorsement allows the sale of wine by the unopened bottle for off-premises consumption. 2) ‘To-Go’ orders are now available any time!

The new minimum cycles will end on the day of the month the “main’ member was born… example: Jim Abajian was born on the 11th day of his birthday month so his and Rhonda’s minimum cycle will run from the 12th of every month through the 11th of the following month. It’s very simple, just remember to have spent your minimum of $45 no later than the day of the month of your birthday! Those who have birthdays later than the end of the month, will fall on the last day of the month. So if you were born on the 31st and there are only 30 days in the current month, your cycle would end on the 30th. Board of Directors
